- 0:12Hello and welcome to Nick and Kristen in the podcast.
- 0:14I'm Nick. That's Kristen.
- 0:15This is the podcast that is still going on.
- 0:17We are former radio people that are now current podcast people.
- 0:23Chris is a therapist and I am looking for work.
- 0:28What are you Nick? Yeah, I lost struggling and.
- 0:31Confused and I'm a stay at home dad.
- 0:35That's what I am. And then, you know, that's a
- 0:36hard job. It is a hard job and and I get
- 0:39it now, although I feel like we want to switch places, but on on
- 0:44some level, like I would love to just be working all the time and
- 0:48you would probably like to not be.
- 0:49Working. I would love to not work.
- 0:51However, you probably don't want to be home all day either.
- 0:54Yeah, but I mean, I don't know, like I could find stuff to do at
- 0:56home. Like.
- 0:58I yeah, I was talking to my mom about this the other day.
- 1:01It's like I, I feel like everybody has a work battery,
- 1:05like a certain amount of work quota hours.
- 1:08I started working when I was 15 years old at a lifeguard.
- 1:12I worked at a, a wild rivers in life, a wild like a water park.
- 1:18And then I also worked at like a rec center.
- 1:19Like I feel like I've always had like two things going on always
- 1:22at once. And I hit my mid 40s and now all
- 1:27of a sudden I'm like, it's done. The battery's almost empty.
- 1:30I've reached the amount of hours I was willing to work.
- 1:33That's all you had in the chamber.
- 1:34That's all I had. It makes sense.
- 1:35Unfortunately, you're going to have to push past that gas.
- 1:38I got 20 more years. Keep it on going.
- 1:40Yeah. But on the other hand, we have a
- 1:438th birthday to celebrate in about 6 months, so I thought I'd
- 1:46give you an idea for a cake. This showed up recently on the
- 1:50Internet and I was like, this is perfect for our daughter.
- 1:53Who? Yeah.
- 1:54Who's? Going to be 8.
- 1:54Soon and yeah the it's an 8th birthday cake which the
- 2:01intention was to fully be an 8. Yeah.
- 2:04However, I don't know how this is possibly the worst eight I've
- 2:08ever seen. It's definitely an 8.
- 2:11Well, it's not though, and I'm going to tell you why it's not
- 2:14an 8. So in the center the circles are
- 2:17supposed to be pushed together. Like I understand the double
- 2:20edge tundra like it's she took 2.
- 2:23Push them together, push them together, push them together.
- 2:26No, like she took two circles and she placed them on top of
- 2:29each other. That's what she thought would
- 2:30work. There like the when you make an
- 2:338 like this, they're not perfect circles.
- 2:36Yes, some people draw their eights like that and that's
- 2:39fine. I I would have, I would have
- 2:41emphasized, would have emphasized the outline, yes.
- 2:46They let a darker outline. They let it fade and then the
- 2:48two color choices were horrible. I imagine if this was like blue
- 2:54and red, you wouldn't have noticed.
- 2:56You know what I mean? Like if they were blue eight, it
- 2:58was a blue eight with a red Topper.
- 3:02I don't know if you would have noticed.
- 3:04That's how you. Yeah.
- 3:04See. Like I don't draw my eights that
- 3:06way. What do you mean?
- 3:06I draw the circle, then the circle.
- 3:08So that's. How I draw my eights?
- 3:09That looks weird. Hold on, let me try.
- 3:11That, but if you had outlined these, yes, these beautiful
- 3:16rotund, plump circles, then I think that it would have been
- 3:22all. Right, you make an 8 like this.
- 3:24Yeah, that doesn't look like an 8 to you.
- 3:27Looks pretty hatish to me. I mean, which is really.
- 3:32An 8 here I mean. You make it look like this.
- 3:36I'm I don't know if I do perfect.
- 3:37Take them off the screen. No, I can't.
- 3:39They're drilled in my brain. Here.
- 3:41Let me draw. Give me a piece of paper.
- 3:43I don't have a piece of paper, this was my only.
- 3:45Waste in the paper? Yeah, I'm more.
- 3:47I mean, OK, this is kind of like it was done.
- 3:49Quickly, it's a quicker draw to do a circle circle and move on.
- 3:52I don't think anybody this. Is my like this is a better 8?
- 3:55That's still it's a good eight. I'm nothing wrong?
- 3:57Not too perfect circles. You're good.
- 3:59Weird, I've never look. It looks alien, like an alien
- 4:03code. Your 8 doesn't alienate my 8 all
- 4:05right? Like it doesn't make my 8 less
- 4:07of an. Eight.
- 4:08I just, I just sort of feel like if we were to ask a kindergarten
- 4:12teacher, hey, how are we making our eights?
- 4:15It's not 2 perfect circles on top of each other.
- 4:18As long as the 8 is the the communication is communicated.
- 4:22Basically if no one looks that great at my number, like if I'm
- 4:25drawing 877 this takes longer. No one's walking through and
- 4:29going wait a second is that is that 2 circles on top of each
- 4:31other? Yes, I.
- 4:32Know I and yes, if you look really quickly and I go what
- 4:34number is this you're going to say 8 obviously, right but.
- 4:37Like you break down the method if.
- 4:38You look at what is a correct looking 8, it's not too look at
- 4:43how weird that that. Doesn't look weird, it looks
- 4:44like an 8. When you push the the 8th floor
- 4:47on the elevator, are you pushing this sometimes or are you
- 4:50pushing? This it's all about your font
- 4:51preference. I prefer a font where the 8 is
- 4:55equal. I think we.
- 4:55Have to put them inside. And I think that like Impact
- 5:00font is a good eight, you know what I mean?
- 5:02Like you're 8's more Times New Roman, and that's fine.
- 5:07They're both eights. It's a It's a snowman without a
- 5:10top hat. You.
- 5:12Can't it's, it's an 8. I don't know what time I mean
- 5:15fine. I mean to each so.
- 5:17I'm not turn it sideways. They're both Infinity symbols,
- 5:19so it's like. I know, but like.
- 5:21I mean, yours is more of an yeah, it's an Infinity symbol,
- 5:23but not 8. It's an 8A.
- 5:26Comment below which ones more of an. 8 How do you draw your
- 5:28eights? Are you one stroke?
- 5:298 or are you like you double circling like comment below,
- 5:34which is a weird comment. However, this 8 is the most
- 5:37beautiful eight I've ever seen. I would like this on my my
- 5:40birthday when you're I know I'm not turning, I'm not turning
- 5:44anywhere 8 at all, but I would like an. 8 and you turn 48, I'll
- 5:47be sure to take two round circles and push them together.
- 5:50Yeah, you're gonna hate how I draw fours and G's if you don't
- 5:53like the way you draw eights. So what's wrong with your fours?
- 5:56I draw fours like, I don't know, like there's two different
- 5:59fours. Now.
- 6:00If you're going to bring it up, draw a four.
- 6:02Let's see how you draw your fours.
- 6:03Well, do you connect the tops? No.
- 6:05OK. There's this kind of a four and
- 6:08there's this kind of a four. Yes, which 4 I'm the.
- 6:11I'm doing this 4. OK.
- 6:13That's the four I'm doing. OK, yeah.
- 6:14And then write your GS, your capital GS.
- 6:16Capital G. Capital G Oh boy.
- 6:22OK, that's not how I draw it. So my G's are AC and A7.
- 6:26OK, this is fascinating stuff, people.
- 6:31I know, I'm sure you're enthralled.
- 6:33That's my GC and A7. I don't know why I just can't.
- 6:36I don't like the curve. It always looks weird to me like
- 6:39if you couldn't keep it connected.
- 6:40Like my GS just come out weird. So this is more of AG.
- 6:44Do you do an AZ with a line through it?
- 6:46No, I never understood that. I don't know what the line
- 6:48means. Do you do AZ with a line I?
- 6:50Do AZ with a line through it. Why?
- 6:51Because so you show. It's not a 2.
- 6:53Because at one point my mother said she hated when people did
- 6:58that and I started doing it just to be rebellious because that
- 7:01was like my 1 actor rebellious. I'm.
- 7:03Going to be. Known as the Z line putter.
- 7:06Yeah, do you put lines in your sevens?
- 7:08It's. The same kind of thing.
- 7:09No, I don't, I don't think I do put lines in my sevens and the
- 7:12other day I was like why am I still doing the line through the
- 7:15Z it's. A little F you to mom every time
- 7:17he's like. No, I mean, mom, I know you
- 7:19listen to this podcast. It was just one of those things
- 7:21where I was like, this is where I'm going to get it back.
- 7:24This is where I'm going to exert my independence.
- 7:26Nothing rebellious, just like yeah, take that and.
- 7:31Every time she told you, every time she wrote you a note that
- 7:33she wanted pizza, it was a small rebellion on the note.
- 7:37I'll have some pizza. Yeah, it's now it's stuck with
- 7:40me and I was writing something with for Lily and I was like,
- 7:44why am I still doing this? Yeah, I'll that.
- 7:49I mean, it's a font style, you know?
- 7:51I guess, but I'm like, this is who I am now.
- 7:54That's the font you chose. Born out of rebellion.
- 7:56Through the Hells of fire, here comes Kristen.
- 7:59Ever tiny little rebellion and Kristen's.
- 8:01Right. Yeah, take it.
- 8:02I'll take this time to tell you about the the Vancouver, the
- 8:06Clark County trash bandits. I don't know.
- 8:08They're in Vancouver, so it's Clark County.
- 8:10Clark County trash. We're getting our shirts
- 8:12tomorrow, by the way. What?
- 8:14He's going to drop them off in our house?
- 8:15No, Wednesday. We're gonna get the shirts this
- 8:17week, OK? Or I ordered you an XL just
- 8:21because I know it's probably gonna be more comfortable for
- 8:23you since you're very small. And when it shrinks, if it
- 8:27shrinks, it'll shrink down to a large.
- 8:28I am not an XL. You're not an XL, but I, I.
- 8:31It's fine. I don't know what the cut of the
- 8:33shirt is, so it's probably. A good call.
- 8:34It's a men's shirt, so it's like for the love of God.
- 8:37Then you should have ordered me a medium.
- 8:39Don't worry, it'll shrink down. So most of them drink, but yeah.
- 8:42So we get the shirts in a couple days, Mike.
- 8:44He says. You can buy the shirt, but the
- 8:47shipping's gonna be about 2000. Mike, Why is Mike entering?
- 8:50Well, Mike Bissett wanted it in Mike Abu Dhabi.
- 8:52I said he's like, did someone say in the chat that they
- 8:55wanted? I said, yeah, he's in Abu Dhabi.
- 8:56He's like, oh, that's $2000 for. Shipping.
- 8:58I'm not sending a shirt to Abu Dhabi.
- 9:01Yeah, when I go to the opening of the new Disney World out
- 9:04there in 90,000 years, I'll bring a shirt.
- 9:08But by the way, season tickets go on sale in October.
- 9:10You can follow them on Facebook. For more updates, go to
- 9:12clarkcountytrashpandas.com. The Clark County trash ban is
- 9:15where community, passion and professional basketball come
- 9:17together. That's right, the Basketball
- 9:19League is coming to Portland. Don't say the basketball.
- 9:21To Clark County the I didn't say that, though you.
- 9:24Can't say that. The Basketball League is coming.
- 9:27TBL is coming. TBL is.
- 9:29Coming basketball league. Get on board, it's gonna be a
- 9:32good show. Become a trash panda.
- 9:34That should be the slogan of TBL Get on board, TBL the basketball
- 9:39league, get on board, get on board, get on board.
- 9:41It's happening whether you like. It or not.
- 9:42And it works because the boards of the basketball to feel like
- 9:45court like, yeah, get on boards. Just writing, writing wins
- 9:50around winners out here. So I thought I saw this story
- 9:52and I thought of you immediately.
- 9:54And it's something. No, it's actually it's you're
- 9:57going to get super nerdy about this because I know you're super
- 9:59fascinated about this. There's an 80 year old woman who
- 10:01had severe dementia or Alzheimer's and she couldn't
- 10:08talk, couldn't stand, couldn't walk.
- 10:10Nice. And sad.
- 10:11I'm glad you thought. Of me, she couldn't do anything.
- 10:13She was like on her last leg. So they're like, why not
- 10:16experiment? So they gave her a insane dose
- 10:21of psilocybin. OK, I'm on board.
- 10:24Which is mushrooms or the magic? The thing in magic mushrooms
- 10:28that make them magic gave her a insane they say like.
- 10:32What do you mean an insane amount?
- 10:34Why would they do that? Well, because they're like,
- 10:36well, they call it a heroic dose.
- 10:38They gave her a heroic dose. 19 hours later she started talking.
- 10:44A month later she started walking.
- 10:46She's now walking and talking. And remember after 19 hours, she
- 10:49was recalling her life. She was reflecting back on all
- 10:52her memories. She was she's now basically the
- 10:55same person. She's like back to life after
- 10:58this. Yeah, it's it's wild.
- 11:00It's absolutely wild. Psilocybin is like it's
- 11:04unlocking so much stuff for people and it's kind of insane.
- 11:09It's the reason I got into the mental health like world.
- 11:13We we watched a documentary about how magic mushrooms were
- 11:17being used in therapy. And I remember being like, I
- 11:19want to do that. Yeah.
- 11:20And your. Goal was to be like in the
- 11:22research. My goal was to be part of the
- 11:24research team that because it's in Oregon.
- 11:26That's right, the research team's in Oregon.
- 11:28And I was like, Oh my God, I want to do that so bad.
- 11:30And then I got sidetracked and I was like, everything's
- 11:32relational. So I became a marriage and
- 11:34family therapist. And you found out the research
- 11:36is hard. Well, research is hard and it's,
- 11:40and I'm going to try to be really kind like I'm going to
- 11:42try to be PC when I say this, but the ebb and flow of that
- 11:47research really depends on the administration.
- 11:50And, and so like one minute you could have a really thriving
- 11:55research team and then the next minute everything's gone.
- 11:57And so it's like that's just sort of no way to live it for
- 12:01anybody. I, I think that if you're
- 12:03funding a research study, it should be through completion,
- 12:06whether whoever takes office or not or whatever.
- 12:09But but it is fascinating. It is amazing what it can do.
- 12:15And it's a shame that it kind of got Co opted in the 60s and 70s
- 12:19as like, because that's when we started researching it and
- 12:21really and really seeing that LSD and these kind of like high
- 12:27hallucinogenics can have such a therapeutic problem, like
- 12:31properties to it. And like Dennis Leary and stuff
- 12:35like got all like for everybody put it in the water.
- 12:38And it's like, no, no, no, that's not what we wanted.
- 12:41We wanted to like study it and research it.
- 12:43And then all of a sudden, like, you know, Nixon was like, we
- 12:45can't have this. It was like, and so like, it was
- 12:49a shame because it was, it was on the track to being just like
- 12:53an amazing tool. Yeah, that we don't have any
- 12:56more. And I think that it's a long, I
- 12:57mean, it's, it's along the lines of marijuana and stuff like that
- 13:00where I, I think in a couple years we'll be more open to the
- 13:05research part of. It I hope.
- 13:06So because if stories like this keep coming out like I thought
- 13:09it was, I was like 80, could only say 2 words at a time and
- 13:12is now having full blown conversations about her life.
- 13:14They say it. It reignites the memory part
- 13:17portions of your brain like. It connects the neural pathways,
- 13:20the reason you're. Seeing things, yeah, the way
- 13:22you're seeing things is because it's reconnecting and
- 13:24reinvigorating these neural pathways, which is like,
- 13:27amazing. Science is awesome.
- 13:28It's way cool and in this documentary that we watched,
- 13:32they they gave it to like a 70 something year old nun.
- 13:37I don't know if you remember this highly religious.
- 13:39Obviously she spent her whole life serving God and everything.
- 13:42And this is not somebody that would ever mess around with
- 13:44marijuana but or with hallucinogenics.
- 13:47But she was terminal cancer. And so she took it as kind of
- 13:51like a come to grips with the end of her life.
- 13:54And when she she did it and she was kind of experiencing this
- 13:58hallucinogenic, she saw mother Mary and mother Mary was like,
- 14:02hey, it's going to be OK. And like talk to her.
- 14:04She had a conversation whether this is a real thing or not a
- 14:08real thing. But she said she woke up the
- 14:10next, woke up from the trip essentially and was like, I have
- 14:130 fear of dying. Like it completely changed my
- 14:17life. It completely changed my
- 14:18outlook. I'm looking forward to seeing
- 14:20what the afterlife brings for me and all this kind of stuff.
- 14:22And it's like how wonderful it took away the.
- 14:25And they showed that it like guides through trauma, like like
- 14:28severe debilitating trauma, like they go in, they give you this
- 14:32dose and then there's a professional there to kind of
- 14:33walk you through what's happening and you deal with it
- 14:37and you come out the end you go. Cured, like fixed, right?
- 14:42And that's the key is like having a therapist and like a
- 14:45team in there. Don't just take it this.
- 14:47Isn't like something you do in your apartment and you're like,
- 14:49oh, I want to see God like it's like it's a guided.
- 14:52Everything was guided by a team of therapists and.
- 14:56Also to pull you out if they need to.
- 14:57Yeah, like there's at least three people in the room with
- 14:59you. You're in a medical facility.
- 15:01And also there's a one way, we're one way mirror and there's
- 15:04a whole team of clinical staff behind it documenting it,
- 15:08feeding things to the therapist. Like, I mean, it's a fabulous
- 15:12tool. It's something that you want to
- 15:14do. Right, I would love to try it.
- 15:16I've never I've never had a hallucinogenic in any kind of
- 15:20capacity and I've always been scared because the the stories
- 15:24is like you're going to jump off a roof because you think you can
- 15:26fly and it's like a no, that's. Don't take that much.
- 15:28No, like normally that's like a comorbidity with somebody that's
- 15:32like going through like a bipolar or manic episode while
- 15:35they're also taking this thing, right?
- 15:37That's not the usual experience for somebody, but I don't want
- 15:40to take it at the house. Like I would want the team of
- 15:44therapists. And again, like, I don't have
- 15:46like, significant trauma in my history, so it's not like they
- 15:49could guide me through something.
- 15:50I just want to experience what it would be like to be on it and
- 15:53just sort of see, I mean, a lot of people are saying, like, I
- 15:57know I'm waxing poetic on this. I'm sorry, but that's why I
- 15:59brought it up. Yeah.
- 16:00It's this idea of like, it unlocks creativity that you are
- 16:05that you're suppressing. And I, and I always feel, and
- 16:09this is very personal, but like I always feel like I'm very,
- 16:11very creative person, but that my logical brain is putting a
- 16:14stopper in the creative bottle. And I don't know how to stop
- 16:19myself from doing that. I want to take the, the stopper
- 16:21out of the bottle and just see what comes out creativity like
- 16:24creatively. And I can't, I can't reconcile
- 16:28these two parts of my brain, the logical and the creative.
- 16:31But I've heard that it takes the stopper out and it allows you to
- 16:34experience full creativity. And so it's like, what would
- 16:37that look like? You know, the same thing because
- 16:39like, I wonder if I don't know if I would do it.
- 16:42I kind of want to know what it is, but I I don't I don't know
- 16:47if I want to dive too deep. Well, like I'm.
- 16:49Good mentally the. Issue with you is you might have
- 16:53significant trauma that you have buried and you do not want it to
- 16:57come back up and you do not want to deal with it.
- 16:59If I if I don't know, it can't hurt me, right?
- 17:02So that's fine. This.
- 17:03Is a great. There are occasional commercials
- 17:05that come on that I start crying at that I go, what the hell?
- 17:07That. Was weird.
- 17:08Where did that come? I'm from so that's only once I'm
- 17:11older. It's starting starting to breach
- 17:13now. So I'm like, wait a second.
- 17:14I have to like, sit and analyze. Like, so maybe you're not an
- 17:17ideal candidate because maybe I don't want to be because it's
- 17:19just like I don't have anything that's going to come up where
- 17:21I'm going to be like, oh, I have never dealt with that in 20.
- 17:23Years maybe I should like maybe I should deal with it and then
- 17:27but I'd be a whole different person.
- 17:28Like I feel like it would change me like to the core, yeah,
- 17:31because the reason like I'm fighting it off and if I'm not
- 17:33fighting it, then I'm having free to like be a normal person.
- 17:36I know, but look at that be. Like I.
- 17:38Mean it would be so, so interesting.
- 17:40Well, yeah, I mean, I'm glad you brought it up because this is
- 17:43one of my favorite topics to talk about.
