- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey everybody, Sam Van Ryder with Cyber Set Community here, enjoying a beautiful ride in the mountains of Switzerland.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I come back here every year, place where I grew up and spent a lot of time on a workation.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: So I'm thinking about a lot of things at work.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: I'm doing some work as well, but also taking some time for me.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: One of the things is I ride around these areas that I, you know, when I go through this process of trying to turn myself off a little bit, that's not easy.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We have a tough job inside where there's a lot going on all the time.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And the message I kind of want to give out with this one is the whole aspect of work-life balance, and for a lot, that's a term of cool misnomer, BS, whatever you want to call it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: A lot of employers will talk tell you about work-life balance and this and that.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, it lies on you to do what you need to do to shut down.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We have a tough job.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Even as I try to shut down, I have one eye kind of on the news, seeing what's happened in cyber.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And it's hard.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And I know there are there are the first line responders, if you will, that are in the SOC, incident responders, things like that that are being taxed more than ever.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So and myself being in OT, it's even worse because we just don't have enough practitioners.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So what do you do?
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You load more work onto them so you can get the workload done.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So message to employers, take it seriously.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Make sure you're if you're a leader, if you've got teammates that are on the front lines of cyber, make sure that they get some downtime.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Make sure that they can actually turn off us and don't bother.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: You know, so let them go off and do your own thing.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And if they try to log in, tell them to pound sand and get back to swimming or biking or whatever the heck they're doing, laying on the beach.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Because it's really important that we keep as many people in this practice as we possibly can.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Because the as defenders, there's a lot on our shoulders, and the bad guys aren't giving up.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: They're counting on us to quit.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: They're counting on us to get weak, because that's when they have the opportunity to pop that box or do whatever they need to do to create chaos and make our lives worse.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I'm just begging you all pay.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Take a moment, take some downtime, and make sure that you're ready for the year ahead when you can as much as you can take that downtime throughout the year.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: It's not just a one time thing, not just one two week vacation or whatever, but take those weekends, make sure you do get the time off and spend time with friends, family, and look after yourself.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: So hope to see you out there and thanks for your time.
