Latest / Foul Territory / Jeff Francoeur on ATL signing Suarez & Yaz, New manager Walt Weiss
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: The Braves signed two big names, mikeel Streemsky Robert Suarez.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Talk to me about what you think about what these
- 0:08Speaker 1: two can bring to the table.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I love both of these pickups.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I think it's a very good sign that the Braves
- 0:14Speaker 1: are trying again to get back to where they need
- 0:16Speaker 1: to be. We talked about it earlier, but you know,
- 0:19Speaker 1: what's been the consensus around where you're at and all
- 0:21Speaker 1: these pickups that they got, well, I.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Think the pieces are starting to take shape. And the
- 0:26Speaker 2: fact that now all of a.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Sudden you've got a Glacias and Suarez in the eight nine,
- 0:29Speaker 3: you feel phenomenal about that. I mean, people forget this,
- 0:33Speaker 3: they've called Lazias last first two to three months.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Guys, the last three months his numbers were.
- 0:38Speaker 3: As good as any closer in baseball, Like he figured
- 0:41Speaker 3: it out and getting out a rough patch. So I
- 0:43Speaker 3: love that, and I think also with that, you're able
- 0:45Speaker 3: to keep Ranaldo Lopez in the rotation. It fills another
- 0:48Speaker 3: rotation slot for you. You know, I thought, do they
- 0:51Speaker 3: move them to the pen, But now that they have these,
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think with the Stripsky, what you're seeing now is
- 0:57Speaker 3: you're going to.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Have in the outfield for outfielders, right, So you're.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Gonna have Acuna, you're gonna have Profar, you're gonna have
- 1:03Speaker 3: Michael Harris and you're gonna have him.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So I think you're gonna see a rotating DH.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Right, if Drake Baldwin doesn't play one day catching, you
- 1:11Speaker 3: have the ability to DH com right. So I don't
- 1:14Speaker 3: think you're gonna see like a marcel A Zuna sign
- 1:16Speaker 3: where they're just gonna get a guy to come in DH.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think look to keep Ron McCune. You're fully healthy.
- 1:21Speaker 3: It's probably not about idea to DH of thirty games
- 1:24Speaker 3: a year, right, keep him off his feet, give him
- 1:26Speaker 3: the ability to rest on Sunday Day games.
- 1:29Speaker 2: My big thing still is.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I like the way this has played out. We gotta
- 1:34Speaker 3: get a short stop, right, Like I'm just like, you
- 1:37Speaker 3: have to.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Have that guy up the middle.
- 1:39Speaker 3: You think back to when the Braves have always been
- 1:41Speaker 3: good rockfield for call, you know, Andrelton Simmons, Dansby Swanson, Right,
- 1:47Speaker 3: there's always been an elite shortstop.
- 1:49Speaker 2: There's always been a guy there that you trust.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And so I think the last piece more than anything is, look,
- 1:54Speaker 3: you're gonna have Strider.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You're gonna have Stale swelling Box coming back. You have
- 1:58Speaker 2: Lopez some.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Arms, would you would I like to see him out
- 2:01Speaker 3: another arm, Yes, but I think you got to give
- 2:04Speaker 3: a good solid shorge stop and if you do that
- 2:07Speaker 3: with Austin Riley coming back this year, Maddals and Akune
- 2:11Speaker 3: is gonna be healthy. Ozzy, I think had a better
- 2:13Speaker 3: second half. Like you, You've got a team very capable
- 2:17Speaker 3: of winning the out you.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Want to put.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Sue. I think they have a team of superstar players
- 2:22Speaker 4: and maybe some people would be like, well, twenty three
- 2:25Speaker 4: was just a aberration and all that, or twenty two,
- 2:28Speaker 4: I'm sorry it was an aberration and where they all
- 2:30Speaker 4: just did incredible and everything. I think they're elite level players.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Are you okay with building a team that says, Hey,
- 2:40Speaker 4: Matt Olsen, you always play one hundred and sixty two
- 2:43Speaker 4: games at first base, Albie's when he's healthy, He's playing
- 2:47Speaker 4: every single game at second base. Riley every single game.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Acuna wants to play every single game. Hey, we're gonna
- 2:53Speaker 4: switch it up. Walt Weiss came in and he's gonna
- 2:55Speaker 4: rotate the DH. Do you think the guys will be
- 2:57Speaker 4: fine with that? And if they are fine with it,
- 3:00Speaker 4: are they gonna be able to make that adjustment, because
- 3:03Speaker 4: you know it's hard you play the outfield and then
- 3:06Speaker 4: you go, oh, dh, okay, well what do I do
- 3:07Speaker 4: all day? Do I hold my bat? Do I have
- 3:09Speaker 4: my batting gloves on? Do I hit in the cage?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:14Speaker 3: Look, first off, I'll tell you this, I love Walt Whise.
- 3:16Speaker 3: He's a lot like in the fact that he's a
- 3:18Speaker 3: players manager.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But don't know why.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Walt.
- 3:21Speaker 3: He's gonna be a little more outspoken. He's gonna say
- 3:23Speaker 3: some things to the players, and I think that's okay.
- 3:25Speaker 3: It's okay to hold players accountable. It's to okayto ruffles
- 3:27Speaker 3: some feathers sometimes. And I think when I look at
- 3:30Speaker 3: Wall having those conversations at the starter spring training, right, guys,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you can both agree like you've been told tough things
- 3:37Speaker 3: by managers sometimes, whether it's hey, you're not gonna play
- 3:40Speaker 3: against today because I don't like the matchup right, or
- 3:43Speaker 3: you don't do But if you communicate these things, the
- 3:46Speaker 3: players might not like it at first, but they're gonna
- 3:48Speaker 3: respect it.
- 3:49Speaker 2: And I think Walt can come from a good place
- 3:51Speaker 2: to that.
- 3:51Speaker 3: He's got experience, he's done it, and you know, I
- 3:55Speaker 3: said this from in the beginning, Like I think we
- 3:57Speaker 3: can all agree. I probably the brains were looking at
- 4:00Speaker 3: other managers first and wanting them and as until Walt, like,
- 4:03Speaker 3: you don't have to be the first, second, third choice,
- 4:06Speaker 3: you got the job.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Just show him you're the right choice at the right time.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And I think this team's going to rally around wall
- 4:12Speaker 2: I really do.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing is going to be keeping
- 4:16Speaker 3: those guys on the field and keeping them healthy, because
- 4:19Speaker 3: the Braves have something that not a lot of teams do.
- 4:21Speaker 3: We've seen the Dodgers do it more. You're seeing less
- 4:24Speaker 3: and less of the platoon and give me the guys
- 4:26Speaker 3: that can go out there day in and day out
- 4:28Speaker 3: and play. And I think that's good. And that's why
- 4:30Speaker 3: I think you're gonna see the DH rotated. I think
- 4:33Speaker 3: that's why they did that, Like unless you can get
- 4:35Speaker 3: a shoreber or someone that's like a slam dunk DH
- 4:39Speaker 3: keeping a Kunya off his feet for thirty games, while
- 4:42Speaker 3: he might not like it at times, I think towards.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The end of the season is going to pay huge dividends.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I want to go to Walt White's position, shortstop. When
- 4:51Speaker 4: you have a manager that played a certain position. You
- 4:53Speaker 4: feel like he's gonna look for a certain type of shortstop.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Do you think it's gonna be a wall Wei's type
- 5:00Speaker 4: of shortstop. Because they tried to fill in with Orlando
- 5:04Speaker 4: Arcia and I know, Oh had a great All Star year. Defensively,
- 5:08Speaker 4: he was awesome. They gave him that little two year extension.
- 5:11Speaker 4: It didn't work out. Since Dansby sponson, it's been Orlando
- 5:14Speaker 4: Arcia Kim for a few games. Last year they had
- 5:20Speaker 4: Nick Allen Mahew Nick. I was trying to think of
- 5:23Speaker 4: his last name. All I could think of was who
- 5:25Speaker 4: he's a son in law of. What type of shortstop
- 5:28Speaker 4: are they going to go after? Do you think they're
- 5:30Speaker 4: gonna get a Should they push for a bow who
- 5:33Speaker 4: maybe is a little below defensive or should they get
- 5:37Speaker 4: just a solid piece that they know is going to
- 5:40Speaker 4: be consistent there defensively and a little bit offense.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You know, I'll be honest with my answer that is,
- 5:46Speaker 3: if you can go out another big time pitcher, I
- 5:49Speaker 3: would rather have a little bit more of a defensive
- 5:52Speaker 3: shortstop and get a top arm. If you look at it,
- 5:54Speaker 3: it's like we have one move left right, like we
- 5:57Speaker 3: got twenty five a year to depend on one dude.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Then go get me that mishef.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Go get me a winning player, a guy that can hit,
- 6:03Speaker 3: a guy that's got swag, a guy that can handle
- 6:06Speaker 3: the locker room. And I've said it like talking to
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know, counsel in those guys last two years, like Dansby,
- 6:13Speaker 3: they say, the one thing we love is he has
- 6:16Speaker 3: taught these guys like, if you're a healthy post play
- 6:18Speaker 3: every day. You know, if to hat to these guys
- 6:22Speaker 3: like Bush and even Kyle Tucker until it got to
- 6:24Speaker 3: the point he couldn't do it last year, but like, hey,
- 6:26Speaker 3: if you're healthy, play every day, and you know that
- 6:29Speaker 3: can infuse a lineup, It can infuse the team.
- 6:31Speaker 2: So you know, again for.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Me, if you're not going to get that extra starter,
- 6:36Speaker 3: you know, whatever it is for ten, twelve, fifteen million,
- 6:38Speaker 3: even for a year, like go get me a top
- 6:40Speaker 3: short stop, give me, give me a chef, and maybe defensively, look,
- 6:45Speaker 3: when you have Harrison center, you Stremski and Profar with
- 6:49Speaker 3: a counya, you have an elite outfield, You have Olten
- 6:52Speaker 3: and Riley on the corners who are outstanding, So you
- 6:56Speaker 3: can get away to me with having a little less
- 6:58Speaker 3: defense to shore. If you get someone that was the
- 7:01Speaker 3: difference last year guys. Nick Allen was incredible. I mean
- 7:04Speaker 3: I watched this guy to make every plate anywhere. The
- 7:06Speaker 3: problem was that he wasn't hitting, and so all of
- 7:09Speaker 3: a sudden you needed offense from there and you didn't
- 7:11Speaker 3: have it.
- 7:12Speaker 2: So if you if.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Nick Allen's on the twenty three Braves instead all those records, sure,
- 7:16Speaker 3: bat ninth and whatever I get offensively is great, but
- 7:20Speaker 3: when you don't have that, you have to have some offense.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I'd like to see the Braves get some offense from
- 7:24Speaker 2: that short stop. Yeah, agreed.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And Nick Allen, I, you know, not the toot his horned,
- 7:30Speaker 1: but I played with him and USA ball and the
- 7:32Speaker 1: dude fundamental defensive wise, absolutely one of the best I've
- 7:36Speaker 1: ever seen at this young man, absolutely incredibly. I want
- 7:43Speaker 1: to go along the lines that out a little bit,
- 7:44Speaker 1: like we talk about all these guys, you know, who
- 7:47Speaker 1: they have, what they're bringing in, Who is the ultimate
- 7:50Speaker 1: leader on this team, Who is the guy that that's
- 7:52Speaker 1: gonna take all these new guys and be like, hey,
- 7:54Speaker 1: this is the Braves way, you know, nicely in the
- 7:57Speaker 1: right fashion, But who's that guy everybody's kind of gonna
- 7:59Speaker 1: lean on now knowing, Hey, listen, you know we got
- 8:01Speaker 1: this ship here, Let's let's do it our way.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Who's that guy?
- 8:05Speaker 3: I'd like to see the Austin Riley right, like you're
- 8:08Speaker 3: from backwoods Mississippi, like your tough knows you play the
- 8:13Speaker 3: game the right way. I don't know that necessarily that's his.
- 8:17Speaker 3: You know, Forte and what he does. You know, Chris
- 8:20Speaker 3: Sale on the pitch and side, of course, is as
- 8:21Speaker 3: fire as anybody. I think he's been outstanding. But I
- 8:25Speaker 3: think that's the thing. Last year you might have saw
- 8:27Speaker 3: a lack of that in that clubhouse at times. You know,
- 8:30Speaker 3: Dansby and Freddie Freeman or two of those guys that
- 8:34Speaker 3: were able to command that respect, command the thing. And
- 8:37Speaker 3: I don't think anybody's really stepped up to do that.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And we talk about a lot right on my podcast.
- 8:43Speaker 3: You all know when you were in locker rooms, culture
- 8:46Speaker 3: is a big thing. My biggest thing is when you
- 8:49Speaker 3: look at it from a standpoint, you have to have
- 8:51Speaker 3: somebody to lead in that clubhouse when things go wrong,
- 8:54Speaker 3: when you have the injuries you did last year, when
- 8:57Speaker 3: you had some of this stuff happen.
- 8:58Speaker 2: If you remember the Acuna incident earlier. Someone that can
- 9:01Speaker 2: come and say.
- 9:01Speaker 3: We're not letting this terrorists apart, and so I think
- 9:04Speaker 3: that's something that's going to be interesting. I think, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 3: the Stremsky, I've heard great things in the clubhouse about him,
- 9:08Speaker 3: and so I think.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Alex might be a little more aware of what you're hearing.
- 9:12Speaker 3: We're seeing it with the Mets, right I think we're
- 9:14Speaker 3: seeing David Searns trying to change the culture of what
- 9:18Speaker 3: that is. I know in New York right now we
- 9:20Speaker 3: can all agree. You know, Look, you play there too,
- 9:23Speaker 3: you know what it's all about. Like the world's ending
- 9:25Speaker 3: up there right now. But at the same time, give
- 9:28Speaker 3: him a chance to see who he brings in and
- 9:31Speaker 3: who if all of a sudden tomorrow, if I could
- 9:34Speaker 3: have told you you give up Pete, Alonzo and Diaz
- 9:37Speaker 3: would go somewhere, but you're gonna get treks Kougel, would y'all.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Sign on the dotted line for that?
- 9:43Speaker 4: For sure?
- 9:44Speaker 2: I I would give me that guy. So you have
- 9:48Speaker 2: to let this stuff play out. As much as the
- 9:50Speaker 2: Winter meetings, I mean a lot.
- 9:51Speaker 3: It still is the second week of December and we're
- 9:54Speaker 3: three weeks away or three months away from spring training,
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know, so I think you got to let this
- 9:59Speaker 3: play out a little bit. But I do think you're
- 10:02Speaker 3: gonna see Alex try to bring a couple guys in.
- 10:04Speaker 2: They're gonna blue guys.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I just want to go along those terms, like you
- 10:08Speaker 1: talk about the Mets and all what's going on. I
- 10:10Speaker 1: said it before, the free agent still gotta want they
- 10:14Speaker 1: want to They have to want to go there, you
- 10:15Speaker 1: know what I mean, after they see everything they did
- 10:18Speaker 1: with Pete guys leaving, they're moving this guy and that guy. Like,
- 10:22Speaker 1: unless you're paying me the tippy topst dollar more than
- 10:25Speaker 1: everybody else, I don't know. I would be like, ah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I'd rather go somewhere else.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think if you're dating films as good
- 10:33Speaker 3: as Pine Alonso is, I think we all agree he
- 10:35Speaker 3: has been incredible, But if you keep doing the same
- 10:38Speaker 3: thing and it's not working, you can't get over the hump.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I just think you have to find ways to improve
- 10:42Speaker 3: your team. And that might not be what every fan
- 10:45Speaker 3: wants to hear. Hey, why are we giving up him
- 10:48Speaker 3: for this? But I think you have to get creatives.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And that's what I think with the Braves maybe is
- 10:53Speaker 3: we've seen them add some of these guys sometimes and
- 10:56Speaker 3: it's like when you go back Gratcy. You mentioned it
- 10:59Speaker 3: in twenty too, it was the guys that no one
- 11:02Speaker 3: expected at the trade deadline or in twenty one, Eddie Rosario, right,
- 11:06Speaker 3: Horace Selaire, you know, guys that ended up making the
- 11:10Speaker 3: difference for the Braves to win the World Series.
- 11:12Speaker 2: So it's not always.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And if you remember that year in twenty one, who
- 11:16Speaker 3: was the big splash, it was a Dodgers. They got
- 11:18Speaker 3: Trade Turner and they got Max Jersey, but it didn't work.
- 11:23Speaker 3: And so my point is sometimes you have to change
- 11:25Speaker 3: things a little bit and change the culture.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And the way it's played.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And I think you're seeing some of these teams maybe say,
- 11:31Speaker 3: you know what, it hasn't worked, so we got to
- 11:33Speaker 3: do something different. When to me, some of the best
- 11:35Speaker 3: teams that we've seen in the playoffs, what do they
- 11:37Speaker 3: have dominant back in bullpens where it is lockdown over
- 11:42Speaker 3: I go to the Royals back in the day. You know,
- 11:44Speaker 3: you look at some of these teams, the Cubs like,
- 11:47Speaker 3: that's what they did, And so I think you're seeing, aw,
- 11:49Speaker 3: let's take a little bit of a different approach.
- 11:50Speaker 4: In Atlanta, all right, last question. Your platform is called
- 11:55Speaker 4: pureathlete dot Com. I have a serious question for you. Yeah,
- 12:00Speaker 4: do you wish you were more athletic before? Like, do
- 12:03Speaker 4: you wish that you were more athletic?
- 12:06Speaker 2: Hey?
- 12:07Speaker 3: All I know is I can send you highlight films
- 12:09Speaker 3: from high school and we can we can finish this
- 12:11Speaker 3: debate off.
- 12:12Speaker 2: That's I mean, I'm not gonna have the mark.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I'm not gonna have the Mark de Rozga like, hey,
- 12:19Speaker 3: streets name after me and Penn University. Okay, not going
- 12:23Speaker 3: down the rows road here, like you don't watch for me.
- 12:27Speaker 3: But uh, you know, I will say this, and I'm
- 12:30Speaker 3: just saying, hey, Cratsey first ballot Georgia High School Football
- 12:33Speaker 3: Hall of Famer with Herscha Wanger, Uh you know, Charlie Ward, Champ,
- 12:38Speaker 3: Bailey Boss, Bailey Pill.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm just saying that, I'll just throw that out there
- 12:41Speaker 2: for it.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Got it, you just got you just got you just
- 12:46Speaker 4: gotta put on Instagram as whatever. The whole trend is
- 12:49Speaker 4: you got to ask somebody if they're if they're if
- 12:51Speaker 4: they're athletics.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Hey, so I thought you would be like I'm.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Joking around if you want to, why don't feel athletic.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I got a hip replacement three weeks ago. Legitimately yesterday,
- 13:01Speaker 3: I got a stop hip replacement on my left stop
- 13:05Speaker 3: my left him.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You're too young, crutch. Can you walk through you? How
- 13:12Speaker 2: bad was front? It's showing you? How about a front
- 13:15Speaker 2: foot hitre I was.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I'm like Jesus, all those sliders, just chasing them and
- 13:18Speaker 3: chasing them.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Finally my hip just gave out. I'm going to need
- 13:22Speaker 2: that too pretty soon, I promise. Friendship hip forty one
- 13:28Speaker 2: years old. Hey, you blaming me.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Alex Gordon got it two day, two weeks before I did.
- 13:33Speaker 3: We went to Pinehurst in September and Gordo couldn't even
- 13:36Speaker 3: finish playing the last round.
- 13:38Speaker 2: He had a ride in the cart for the last
- 13:39Speaker 2: nine holes.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Gordo Gordeo got a hip replacement.
- 13:44Speaker 2: That guy's like, he's like a Donis. Oh dude, That's
- 13:48Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 13:49Speaker 3: And then he had a tougher time, And my wife said, well,
- 13:51Speaker 3: the good news is you're not as strong and muscular
- 13:54Speaker 3: as Alex, so it's probably gonna go easier for you.
- 13:57Speaker 2: They're not gonna have to work through all that muscle
- 13:59Speaker 2: like they did with him. Yeah, your wife is not wrong.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Alex definitely stronger and has a much nicer body than
- 14:07Speaker 4: you do.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But if you ever do get a hip replacement, I
- 14:10Speaker 2: tell you get it. During Thanksgiving.
- 14:11Speaker 3: My God did because everybody came to us and I
- 14:13Speaker 3: stay on the counch and watch college and pro football
- 14:16Speaker 3: for ten days NonStop.
- 14:18Speaker 2: That's the time. That's the time.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Anyway out, Oh you got something, Todd.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I was saying, He's definitely sitting on a nice soft,
- 14:26Speaker 1: cushioned seat or something. You got something underneath there, don't you.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Oh you carry you bring it with you to your
- 14:32Speaker 1: kids games and stuff. You gotta PLoP up.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Let me tell you, man, my softball girl, before I
- 14:38Speaker 3: got it done, I was limping out to the mound,
- 14:40Speaker 3: and my softball girl, the coach twelve you travel to
- 14:42Speaker 3: you and they're like.
- 14:43Speaker 2: And you used to be a professional athlete.
- 14:45Speaker 5: I'm like, oh right, I heard he's got like a
- 14:49Speaker 5: heated seat button. He's got it all.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:53Speaker 5: So they just launched PA plus baseball membership platform with
- 14:56Speaker 5: hundreds of micro lessons from some of the baseball's best
- 14:58Speaker 5: minds to help players and coaches go further faster. Give
- 15:03Speaker 5: us the goods on that first Runchie and then we
- 15:05Speaker 5: of course knew that the Braids were going to make
- 15:07Speaker 5: all these moves in the past twelve hours, so we
- 15:09Speaker 5: line this up days ago and it just happened to
- 15:11Speaker 5: fall into our lap. But anyway, how you doing, man,
- 15:13Speaker 5: and yeah, give us the goods on the new platform.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you this.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Do you want to talk about subscribing and value not
- 15:20Speaker 3: having a J on this show today? This show just
- 15:23Speaker 3: got way up, Like the value of this show just
- 15:26Speaker 3: went through the roof without AJ on it.
- 15:28Speaker 2: So let's just like it is.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I'm gonna see.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It's good to be with y'all. Know.
- 15:36Speaker 3: You know, I've been doing this podcast Career Athlete for
- 15:38Speaker 3: three years and we've done all sorts of sports, different things,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and it's like, you know, what's my bread and butter.
- 15:43Speaker 2: What do we all know the most?
- 15:45Speaker 4: Right?
- 15:45Speaker 2: And it's baseball?
- 15:47Speaker 3: And so you know, coaching all my kids now, seeing
- 15:50Speaker 3: my older brother travel teams, it's like, how can you
- 15:53Speaker 3: come beside help these kids, help these parents navigate whether
- 15:57Speaker 3: your kids gonna be a first round pick right, or
- 16:00Speaker 3: where your kid wants to play D three in college
- 16:02Speaker 3: or just playing high school ball. Like we've talked to
- 16:05Speaker 3: some great guys, some great coaches in college, you know,
- 16:08Speaker 3: different different big time travel programs, and just trying to
- 16:13Speaker 3: help parents right figure out and navigate this crazy journey
- 16:17Speaker 3: that gets crazy and crazier every year with.
- 16:19Speaker 2: More teams, more players. And I'll be honest, it's been
- 16:23Speaker 2: a lot of fun and it's been a huge help
- 16:24Speaker 2: to me.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I want to ask you something about this platform because
- 16:28Speaker 1: I try and tell guys all the time, like, listen,
- 16:31Speaker 1: travel ball it's fun and all, but at the same time,
- 16:34Speaker 1: it's not the end all be all for eight year
- 16:36Speaker 1: old eight to twelve, eight or thirteen year old players.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You see a lot of these kids playing for four, five,
- 16:42Speaker 1: six different teams. I'm sure you guys hit up on
- 16:45Speaker 1: that a lot. Can you just go and just, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: talk a little bit about the whole situation and how
- 16:50Speaker 1: travel ball.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's taken over.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, there's really good parts of it,
- 16:53Speaker 1: but also it's it's a little difficult the same time.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Sometimes I kind of feel in my heart and I'm like,
- 16:58Speaker 1: I wish you would just literally and then a little
- 17:00Speaker 1: aau ball at the end, and that's it.
- 17:03Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I mean, they're trying to make these specials collect teams
- 17:05Speaker 3: Todd at eight, and I'm like, for what, who are
- 17:07Speaker 3: you impressing? Like there's no scouts, there's no And I
- 17:11Speaker 3: get the fun and you want to compete, you want
- 17:13Speaker 3: to teach these kids, but at the same time, like
- 17:15Speaker 3: it's promoting baseball year round, guys, and like you know, y'
- 17:19Speaker 3: all know as well as I do. You only have
- 17:21Speaker 3: so many bullets in your arms. And I think the
- 17:23Speaker 3: biggest thing that I've learned from this whole thing is
- 17:25Speaker 3: the specialization at an early age is causing massive injuries
- 17:30Speaker 3: as kids get older, Right, they're using the same body parts.
- 17:33Speaker 2: They're never getting a break. And you know, we were lucky.
- 17:36Speaker 3: We grew up where it was like you played football
- 17:38Speaker 3: in the fall, you played basketball the way you played
- 17:40Speaker 3: baseball in the spring, and into the summer a little bit,
- 17:43Speaker 3: and then you took a break and now it is
- 17:46Speaker 3: But I get the parents part, right, Like if your
- 17:49Speaker 3: kids playing football and all of a sudden you have a.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Guy playing fallball the whole fall.
- 17:53Speaker 3: You step back out on that field in February, your
- 17:56Speaker 3: kids behind, or at least that's how parents feel, right,
- 17:59Speaker 3: Like Johnny's doing better than Jimmy because he didn't play football.
- 18:04Speaker 3: But I think we can all agree, right, we've all
- 18:06Speaker 3: played at the highest level.
- 18:07Speaker 2: You played with great players.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Eventually the best you're going to show out somehow.
- 18:14Speaker 2: But that's not a twelve years old, right.
- 18:15Speaker 3: That's as you get older and as you start to
- 18:19Speaker 3: think about that. And I just think we're trying to
- 18:21Speaker 3: find ways to get kids playing all these sports.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Figure out what you like. You don't have to play
- 18:26Speaker 2: fall baseball at eight years old, year round.
- 18:29Speaker 3: And I think that's my biggest argument to these parents
- 18:32Speaker 3: is continue to let your kids play other sports until
- 18:36Speaker 3: it just can't happen.
- 18:38Speaker 4: What's your favorite part of the Pure Athlete platform because
- 18:41Speaker 4: on it it has x big league guys ex college
- 18:46Speaker 4: or college coaches talking about college stuff, nutritionists. What's your
- 18:50Speaker 4: favorite part of the platform that you think is going
- 18:52Speaker 4: to get the most the most used for all levels
- 18:57Speaker 4: of people who subscribe from literally all the way up
- 19:01Speaker 4: to college kids.
- 19:03Speaker 3: You know, we did one with David Wright today, and
- 19:05Speaker 3: you know, he's one of my favorite teammates I've played,
- 19:07Speaker 3: and I just love the narrative that he's going to
- 19:11Speaker 3: get where we got. Guys, you have to love the game,
- 19:14Speaker 3: you have to be obsessed with the game. You have
- 19:16Speaker 3: to wake up and think about the game. I got
- 19:19Speaker 3: four kids. All my kids aren't going to think the
- 19:21Speaker 3: same way I thought, right and be like, hey, I
- 19:24Speaker 3: want to miss the pool party during the summer to
- 19:27Speaker 3: go play in two baseball games. And I think the
- 19:30Speaker 3: biggest thing I want to tell these parents is Okay,
- 19:32Speaker 3: if your kid doesn't want to do that.
- 19:34Speaker 2: It's okay. If your kid wants to just.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Be a good high school player and then go to
- 19:38Speaker 3: college and drink beer and you know, just live the
- 19:41Speaker 3: college life. There's nothing wrong with that too. And so
- 19:44Speaker 3: I think it's trying to tell these parents and even
- 19:46Speaker 3: if you do go all in and you play on
- 19:48Speaker 3: the highest level travel team, you're not guaranteed to play
- 19:51Speaker 3: in college. You're not guaranteed to get drafted and be
- 19:54Speaker 3: a first pick. And as David said, eventually comes down
- 19:56Speaker 3: to how bad does my kid want it? And I
- 19:59Speaker 3: think too many times us as parents think our kids
- 20:02Speaker 3: might want it more than they do.
- 20:03Speaker 2: But it's like, are you really seeing the fruits of it?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Are you seeing your kid come home hitting off the
- 20:08Speaker 3: tea for thirty minutes by themselves like we probably did,
- 20:12Speaker 3: you know, Like, if they're not doing that, chances are
- 20:16Speaker 3: they don't love it as much as.
- 20:17Speaker 2: You think you do.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Pure Athlete, Instagram, YouTube app, Pure Athlete Inc. You can
- 20:22Speaker 5: listen to this show that Frenchi's on two on Apple, Spotify,
- 20:26Speaker 5: wherever you get your POD's plenty of big guests on there.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Like you said, good combo with David Wright as well.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Good stuff Frenchie, good catching up with you man.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Hey, anytime AJ's not on, y'all give me a ring, man,
- 20:36Speaker 2: I love to join.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Y'all done every time we get Frenchie again.
- 20:40Speaker 2: From now on we know when to get him.
