Speaker 3: taking over the campus of the University of Charleston. Here
• 2:17
Speaker 3: to talk about it, West Virginia music icon Bob Thompson
• 2:21
Speaker 3: and Sarah Wright also an icon. Sarah here, you can
• 2:24
Speaker 3: also be an icon.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, but don't hold a candle to Thomas.
• 2:28
Speaker 3: Everybody's an icon. Mob. Welcome to the show. Thanks for
• 2:31
Speaker 3: great to be here. I think this is my fifth
• 2:34
Speaker 3: anniversary actually earlier this week of doing the show. I
• 2:36
Speaker 3: think this may be the first time you've ever been
• 2:38
Speaker 3: on my show. Pop it took you so long. I
• 2:42
Speaker 3: know I'm late getting here. All right, let's talk about
• 2:46
Speaker 3: this big event. It is the Charlie West Music Festival,
• 2:48
Speaker 3: and again it is happening this Saturday on the campus
• 2:51
Speaker 3: of the University of Charleston. Sarah want to I want
• 2:54
Speaker 3: to start with you talk about the folks putting this
• 2:57
Speaker 3: this music fest on.
• 2:58
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 2:58
Speaker 5: So, this music fest is hosted by Fund for the
• 3:01
Speaker 5: Arts and it is our main fund raiser and it's
• 3:05
Speaker 5: going to be an amazing day full of live music,
• 3:08
Speaker 5: great selection of drinks including craft beer and wine, and
• 3:12
Speaker 5: amazing views there by the capital overlooking the river. It's
• 3:15
Speaker 5: going to be awesome.
• 3:16
Speaker 3: Talk about the organization, the Fun for the Arts, what
• 3:18
  Speaker 3: exactly is that?
• 3:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, So Fun for the Arts is a nonprofit that
• 3:21
Speaker 5: raises money for eleven local art groups. And you know,
• 3:25
Speaker 5: we take great pride in our mission, so we put
• 3:27
Speaker 5: on amazing events that raise money, and then we take
• 3:31
Speaker 5: that money and distribute it to our art groups, who
• 3:34
Speaker 5: then put on great events. So it's a beautiful cycle
• 3:37
Speaker 5: of sharing where we're just creating all this culture, enrichment
• 3:40
Speaker 5: and beauty in our community.
• 3:42
Speaker 3: But Bob, you know, when it's kind of a cliche,
• 3:45
Speaker 3: I guess and promotions when you talk about music to
• 3:47
Speaker 3: say there is something for everyone, But there literally is
• 3:50
Speaker 3: something for everyone at this music festival.
• 3:52
Speaker 7: Absolutely, yes, And that's one of the things that's going
• 3:56
Speaker 7: to be different about this festival that there is a
• 3:59
Speaker 7: variety of of music styles but all going to be
• 4:02
  Speaker 7: great music.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, And nothing brings people together like great music, you know.
• 4:07
Speaker 3: And I always say about these events or something about
• 4:10
Speaker 3: live music, whether I particularly care for a certain genre,
• 4:12
Speaker 3: and I'm a guy that likes pretty much every genre
• 4:15
Speaker 3: of music, but whether you like it or not, you
• 4:17
Speaker 3: get out there and you're fellowshipping and you're having you know,
• 4:21
Speaker 3: having some beat or having something to drink out there.
• 4:23
Speaker 3: It's just everything kind of comes together makes for a
• 4:25
Speaker 3: big old happy day.
• 4:26
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 4:26
Speaker 7: That's that's what we feel is our mission as musicians
• 4:31
Speaker 7: and really as artists, you know, to bring this to people,
• 4:34
Speaker 7: to bring people together, and that's something and we can
• 4:37
Speaker 7: all just celebrate life and celebrate being together. And I
• 4:41
Speaker 7: think that's that's something that we need today especially. Yeah,
• 4:44
Speaker 7: you're right about that.
• 4:45
  Speaker 4: Again.
• 4:45
Speaker 3: We're talking Bob Thompson and Sarah right about the Charlie
• 4:47
Speaker 3: West Music Festival, and I've got the entire lineup posted
• 4:51
Speaker 3: on my social media if you'd like to see, and
• 4:53
Speaker 3: just go over to Dave Alan Radio and you can
• 4:54
Speaker 3: see the people that are going to be performing there.
• 4:56
  Speaker 8: Now.
• 4:56
Speaker 3: Gates open around two thirty and you're doing happy hour
• 5:00
Speaker 3: drinks for five bucks from two thirty to four thirty, right, Sarah.
• 5:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a fantastic price. And during that time you're
• 5:08
Speaker 5: gonna get to listen to Bob Thompson. He kicks off
• 5:11
Speaker 5: our live music at three o'clock, so you get to
• 5:13
Speaker 5: take advantage of those five dollars happy hour drinks and
• 5:16
Speaker 5: listen to Bob. It's an awesome deal.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: Indeed it is, and I'll tell you what we're gonna
• 5:20
Speaker 3: do right now. We'll continue our conversation, but we just
• 5:22
Speaker 3: happen to have four passes to give to somebody to
• 5:27
Speaker 3: go to this music festival we're talking about absolutely free
• 5:31
Speaker 3: Anthony Harmon the A train is standing by, so I'll
• 5:33
Speaker 3: just say it. If you want to be If you
• 5:34
Speaker 3: want to go, be Caller four right now at three
• 5:37
Speaker 3: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Three
• 5:40
Speaker 3: zero four, three four five fifty eight fifty eight Caller
• 5:42
Speaker 3: four right now, I have got a actually I got
• 5:45
Speaker 3: four passes for you to take into Charlie West Music Festival,
• 5:50
Speaker 3: which is happening this Saturday on the campus of the
• 5:52
Speaker 3: University of Charleston. Caller four right now three zero four,
• 5:54
Speaker 3: three four five fifty eight fifty eight. We'll hook you
• 5:57
Speaker 3: up with four free passes. And that's quite a bargain, Sarah.
• 5:59
Speaker 5: Yes, it is, because you're getting an amazing lineup of artists.
• 6:03
Speaker 5: We have Bob, we have Jocelyn and the Sweet Compression,
• 6:06
Speaker 5: we have of good Nature, and our headliner is Shwazy.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: So it's going to be an amazing day.
• 6:12
Speaker 3: Talk about the individual artists and the type of music that.
• 6:15
Speaker 5: They do, right, So, Jocelyn and the Sweet Compression is
• 6:19
Speaker 5: like a funk soul band. They have like this beautiful
• 6:23
Speaker 5: energy to them. And then of Good Nature. They're out
• 6:26
Speaker 5: of North Carolina and they're really upbeat, kind of indie alternative.
• 6:33
Speaker 5: They're going to be a nice transition into our party
• 6:36
Speaker 5: in the evening. And then of course our headliner is
• 6:38
Speaker 5: Shwazy and you'll recognize him from hits like Buzzin and
• 6:42
Speaker 5: Corona and Lime, and he calls himself the King of Summer. So,
• 6:46
Speaker 5: I mean, what better way to kickstart your summer?
• 6:49
Speaker 3: You had me at Corona in Lime, I know, the
• 6:53
Speaker 3: King of Summer. How does one get the title of
• 6:55
Speaker 3: the King of Summer?
• 6:56
Speaker 5: You know, I don't know, but it sounds like one
• 6:58
Speaker 5: heck of a title.
• 7:00
Speaker 3: I don't want to talk about you. You're somebody. I mean,
• 7:03
Speaker 3: as I said, I called you a West Virginia music icon.
• 7:06
Speaker 3: I mean, who doesn't know Bob Thompson. I've seen you
• 7:09
Speaker 3: perform numerous times in various different different settings and whatever,
• 7:13
Speaker 3: what's in this for you? Why? Why do you still
• 7:15
Speaker 3: want to do this? Well?
• 7:17
Speaker 7: We just love performing for people, and especially in a
• 7:21
Speaker 7: live setting. There's nothing like it. And we have as
• 7:24
Speaker 7: much fun as we hope the audience does, because for us,
• 7:27
Speaker 7: it's always a party. And I'm just, you know, blessed
• 7:32
Speaker 7: to have such great musicians playing in the band. Tim
• 7:35
Speaker 7: Kurtz beyond drums, Ryan Kennedy you on guitar, and John
• 7:39
Speaker 7: Ingram on bass. So we have a party all the time,
• 7:43
Speaker 7: and in a live setting like this over by the River's,
• 7:46
Speaker 7: it's it's great for us and we love just bringing
• 7:50
Speaker 7: people together. Our goal is to make people feel better
• 7:55
Speaker 7: when they leave than they did when they came in.
• 7:58
Speaker 7: That's our that's our goal, and.
• 7:59
Speaker 3: We all need more of that these days. I relaxed
• 8:02
Speaker 3: a little bit and put the put the political stuff
• 8:04
Speaker 3: behind us and all the strife and the fighting, and
• 8:07
  Speaker 3: just say let's just come out. Let's let's have a
• 8:09
Speaker 3: good time and enjoy some.
• 8:10
Speaker 7: Muni, right, And that's something we all have in common.
• 8:12
  Speaker 9: Now.
• 8:13
  Speaker 3: You're a guy, uh and and I know a little
• 8:15
Speaker 3: about your career. You're a guy who has as I said,
• 8:19
Speaker 3: you're West Virginia musical icon. What is it that about
• 8:22
Speaker 3: West Virginia that appealed so much to you when you
• 8:24
Speaker 3: came here. Well, when I came here.
• 8:26
Speaker 7: Uh. Most people think that I learned to play jazz
• 8:29
Speaker 7: in New York, which was my hometown, But I learned
• 8:32
Speaker 7: to play jazz here. There was when I was in college.
• 8:36
Speaker 7: There was a great music scene here in Charleston, a
• 8:38
Speaker 7: great jazz scene, especially on the West side of Charleston,
• 8:41
Speaker 7: places like the Crazy Horse Cafe and there was another
• 8:46
Speaker 7: place called the Palm Gardens. But a lot of those
• 8:49
Speaker 7: guys helped me along. They passed the music down to me,
• 8:54
Speaker 7: and uh, I learned a lot about how music should
• 8:57
Speaker 7: feel and uh uh. So it was a great opportunity
• 9:00
Speaker 7: because everybody was very generous with the time, taking young
• 9:04
Speaker 7: players like myself at that time under the dead wing
• 9:08
Speaker 7: and being sure that we could carry this tradition on.
• 9:10
Speaker 7: So that's a tradition that I've tried to keep going,
• 9:13
Speaker 7: you know, bringing younger musicians in and helping them to
• 9:17
  Speaker 7: grow again.
• 9:18
Speaker 3: We're talking with Bob Thompson Sarah right about the Charlie
• 9:21
Speaker 3: West Music Fest, which is happening this Saturday on the
• 9:24
Speaker 3: campus of the University of Charles of Dave aland show
• 9:27
Speaker 3: on five Any Live brought to you in part by
• 9:29
Speaker 3: Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans to
• 9:33
Speaker 3: outline strategies for controlling to minimizing as best as exposure.
• 9:36
Speaker 3: Perfect for commercial property owners and managers. There's a Pinnacle
• 9:39
Speaker 3: Court dot net because what you don't know can hurt you.
• 9:41
Speaker 3: I do believe we have a winner of our tickets,
• 9:43
Speaker 3: so we'll get that name out for you here. Chris,
• 9:47
Speaker 3: Chris Withrow was our winner. So congratulations Chris Withrow, you
• 9:51
Speaker 3: won yourself four passes to the Charlie West Music Festival.
• 9:54
Speaker 3: I'm sure he and three others will certainly be enjoying
• 9:58
Speaker 3: the Charlie West Music Festival, which is happening this Saturday. Sarah,
• 10:01
Speaker 3: talk about some of the other events. This is your
• 10:04
Speaker 3: big event, your signature event, but talk about some of
• 10:06
Speaker 3: the other big events that you guys do.
• 10:08
Speaker 5: Fun for the arts. We host two main fundraisers, one
• 10:11
Speaker 5: being Charlie West Music Fest in the summer and the
• 10:13
Speaker 5: other is the Capitol Cocktail Classic and the Fall. And
• 10:16
Speaker 5: the Capitol Cocktail Classic is a lot of fun and
• 10:20
Speaker 5: much easier to put on. So, for instance, the Cocktail
• 10:23
Speaker 5: Classic only requires twelve volunteers. When Charlie West Music Fest
• 10:28
Speaker 5: takes one hundred and forty so but nonetheless, the Capitol
• 10:32
Speaker 5: Cocktail Classic is a lot of fun. It's a cocktail
• 10:34
Speaker 5: competition between four restaurants downtown and you go from restaurant
• 10:39
Speaker 5: to restaurant sampling a food and signature cocktail, then you
• 10:44
Speaker 5: vote for your favorite at the end of the night.
• 10:46
Speaker 5: Is a very fun.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: Event and quite a bit I mean, I know you
• 10:48
Speaker 3: put a lot of work into that, but this is
• 10:49
Speaker 3: a little bit different when you're talking about all these
• 10:52
Speaker 3: musicians and you're dealing with That's why you got somebody
• 10:55
Speaker 3: like Bob Thompson to be able to help you, help
• 10:57
Speaker 3: you pull that off, because it takes a lot of
• 10:59
Speaker 3: people to put on a music Festivoid. Really, I've done it.
• 11:01
Speaker 3: It takes a lot of people involved.
• 11:03
Speaker 5: Yes, it does. And we are very grateful to Bob
• 11:05
Speaker 5: because not only does he play at our event, but
• 11:08
Speaker 5: he is also a board member and committee member at
• 11:11
Speaker 5: Fund for the Arts, So we are very grateful to
• 11:13
Speaker 5: him and all that he does. He is a instrumental
• 11:16
Speaker 5: part in putting this day together. Thank you, Bob.
• 11:20
Speaker 3: What's the best way for people to get tickets or
• 11:22
Speaker 3: to listen to us? Right now?
• 11:23
Speaker 5: So you can get on our website at fund for
• 11:26
Speaker 5: the Arts wv dot org or our Facebook page Fund
• 11:30
Speaker 5: for the Arts West Virginia, or you can buy them
• 11:32
Speaker 5: at the gate. We make it easy.
• 11:34
Speaker 3: And I know there's nothing you can do about the weather,
• 11:37
Speaker 3: but here's what I saw this morning, and a lot
• 11:39
Speaker 3: can change. It looked like there was going to be
• 11:41
Speaker 3: rain early in the morning, but it's going to clear
• 11:44
Speaker 3: out by afternoon. Now a lot can change with that.
• 11:46
Speaker 3: But this thing, unless you got like a lightning storm,
• 11:48
Speaker 3: you guys are going to go right.
• 11:50
Speaker 5: That's right, We're on. But I am manifesting beautiful weather.
• 11:53
Speaker 5: It's going to beautiful Sonny.
• 11:55
Speaker 3: Were you at Brian Hughes, all right, do your job.
• 11:57
Speaker 3: Brian Spencer and all those guys over there house did
• 12:00
Speaker 3: your job. Hey, guys, I appreciate you taking time out
• 12:02
Speaker 3: of your schedule to be here, and we're looking forward

Speaker 3: to it. Our stations are gonna be there and we're
• 12:07
Speaker 3: gonna be very involved in it. And I know you've been.

Speaker 3: All right, and we'll see you there again. Gates are
• 12:29
Speaker 3: gonna open it thirty on Saturday afternoon and mister Thompson
• 12:32
Speaker 3: and the folks will start off about three o'clock. You've
• 12:35
Speaker 3: got music of all kinds going till what time ten o'clock.
• 12:38
Speaker 5: We're gonna be rocking all day.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: You can go beyond ten.
• 12:40
Speaker 5: Come on, you know, let's turn it up. Parties just
• 12:43
  Speaker 5: getting started.
• 12:44
Speaker 3: Right, exactly right, Sarah and Bob. I appreciate you both
• 12:47
Speaker 3: being here. Thanks a lot. We'll take a break.
• 12:49

Speaker 6: Show, Good morning, thanks for having me.
• 15:47
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. We were talking about having
• 15:49
Speaker 3: a Sarah and also Bob Thompson on of course Charlie
• 15:52
Speaker 3: West Music Festival this Saturday on the campus the University
• 15:55
Speaker 3: of Charleston. Might we see you out there performing?
• 15:58
Speaker 6: You will not see me performing. That is, Singing is
• 16:01
Speaker 6: not my thing. I would only be invited once and
• 16:03
Speaker 6: I would be run off very quickly.
• 16:05
Speaker 3: Well, you know we were talking. I was talking about
• 16:08
Speaker 3: my dad with you during the break. My father was
• 16:09
Speaker 3: a Sunday school superintendent. He would book people to come
• 16:13
Speaker 3: to the church, different gospel groups and whatever, and about
• 16:16
Speaker 3: some of the people he'd say, well, you know what
• 16:17
Speaker 3: the Lord needs clappers too.
• 16:20
  Speaker 6: I am definitely a clapper.
• 16:21
  Speaker 8: You know.
• 16:22
Speaker 6: I have an eleven year old Robert, and a couple
• 16:24
Speaker 6: of years ago, we were out somewhere in the summer,
• 16:27
Speaker 6: and I like to always ask people when I see them, Hey,
• 16:29
Speaker 6: where are you from? Is this your first time to
• 16:30
Speaker 6: West Virginia? And he was telling somebody, my mom's job
• 16:33
Speaker 6: is to sing country roads. So we do have a
• 16:37
Speaker 6: lot of country roads coming out of the State Tourism Office,
• 16:39
Speaker 6: but I am never the one singing it.
• 16:41
Speaker 3: Well, that's probably a good thing, based on what you've
• 16:43
Speaker 3: told me. Me too, kid, me too, all right, So
• 16:45
Speaker 3: let's talk about summer in West Virginia. I mean, are
• 16:49
Speaker 3: we talked about some events here in Charleston with Charlie
• 16:51
Speaker 3: West Music Festival, but also festival kicks off today in Charleston,
• 16:56
Speaker 3: and I'm actually going to have some folks from festival
• 16:58
Speaker 3: in studio on the show coming up tomorrow. But there's
• 17:02
Speaker 3: a whole lot going on.
• 17:03
Speaker 6: There's a lot going on, So if you think about
• 17:05
Speaker 6: West Virginia, there's always a lot going on. So we've
• 17:08
Speaker 6: got this incredible natural beauty, We've got all kinds of
• 17:11
Speaker 6: outdoor recreation, these great mountain towns, where we've got great music,
• 17:17
Speaker 6: we've got great restaurants, etc. But right now is the
• 17:19
Speaker 6: time of the year where we also get to add
• 17:21
Speaker 6: on all those festivals. So we're just wrapping up here
• 17:24
Speaker 6: the bike races in Charleston, which were incredible. Hats off
• 17:27
Speaker 6: to the mayor and the Charleston CBB. We're going into festival,
• 17:30
Speaker 6: the Charlie West Music Fest. Then soon it'll be Regattas.
• 17:33
  Speaker 6: So it's a great time of year. And I don't
• 17:35
Speaker 6: want to hear anyone around here saying there's nothing to do,
• 17:37
Speaker 6: because in addition to the natural stuff we've got in
• 17:40
Speaker 6: this area, it is festival after festival this summer.
• 17:43
Speaker 3: I mean, and you think about it too, Like last weekend,
• 17:46
Speaker 3: for example, we had the Vandalia event going on to
• 17:49
Speaker 3: the Capitol. We had the state track meet that was
• 17:52
Speaker 3: going on in Charleston, and I know, I'm going to
• 17:54
Speaker 3: leave something out. We had the pro road bike races
• 17:57
Speaker 3: that were going on. There were so many things going
• 17:59
Speaker 3: on just in Charleston last weekend. Graduations, you know, I
• 18:03
Speaker 3: mean that's not really tourism per se, but I mean
• 18:05
Speaker 3: graduations were going and so many things going on, And
• 18:08
Speaker 3: that's the way it is. Pretty much all summer here,
• 18:10
Speaker 3: not only in Charleston, but all over West Virginia.
• 18:12
Speaker 6: Yeah, and what was really cool this weekend. So I
• 18:14
Speaker 6: was over at the Capitol and then I was also
• 18:16
Speaker 6: up at Bridge Road where they were having the watch
• 18:18
Speaker 6: party on Monday. But the really cool thing is that
• 18:21
Speaker 6: you were seeing people in different spots around town. So
• 18:23
Speaker 6: they were going down to the Capital for Vandelia, they
• 18:26
Speaker 6: were going downtown, then they were up on the hill.
• 18:28
Speaker 6: You know, people were moving around and really enjoying all
• 18:30
  Speaker 6: the different things. And I think that's that's a look
• 18:33
Speaker 6: into what the rest of the summer is going to be.
• 18:35
  Speaker 7: Like.
• 18:35
Speaker 6: We've got a bunch of incredible groups who continue to
• 18:38
Speaker 6: put on these different festivals and events, and it really
• 18:42
Speaker 6: opens up a lot of opportunities for folks who live here,
• 18:44
Speaker 6: but also for folks who are coming in. Imagine being
• 18:47
Speaker 6: a tourist, like you said, someone who was in town
• 18:49
Speaker 6: for graduation and thinking, Wow, this city has a lot
• 18:52
Speaker 6: going on this last Weekend's that's one of the reasons
• 18:56
Speaker 6: why this is just a great place to live.
• 18:58
Speaker 3: Talking again with State Tourism Secretary Chill See Ruby, the
• 19:00
Speaker 3: Dave Allen Show on five eighty Live is brought to
• 19:02
Speaker 3: you apart by Jute Joot Security Systems. Visit protected by
• 19:06
Speaker 3: Jute dot com or follow them on Facebook. You were
• 19:09
Speaker 3: on the Midday Show with Amanda and I last week
• 19:11
Speaker 3: and we talked a little bit about people choosing to
• 19:14
Speaker 3: check out things in West Virginia. You're the state Tourism secretary,
• 19:18
Speaker 3: you have been for some time, and you say that
• 19:21
Speaker 3: you learn things daily that are going out of state,
• 19:23
Speaker 3: but even you didn't even know.
• 19:24
Speaker 6: Yeah, there's always new things that I find here or there.
• 19:28
Speaker 6: You know, there's things that we have that are growing
• 19:31
Speaker 6: and expanding for folks in Kanawk County. I get that
• 19:34
Speaker 6: all the time. What's new? What have I not checked out?
• 19:36
Speaker 6: So I'll give you you all one kind of tidbit.
• 19:39
Speaker 6: Just right outside, just up the interstate a little bit,
• 19:41
Speaker 6: are the Elk River on the Elk River rail trail
• 19:45
Speaker 6: is rail Explorers. Rail Explorers opened about a year ago.
• 19:48
Speaker 6: There the mountain or they're the rail bikes on the
• 19:51
Speaker 6: railroad train. Have you done them, Dave, No, I have not.
• 19:54
Speaker 6: Very very cool. We need to get you there, but
• 19:56
Speaker 6: it's very cool. They're pedal assist. You don't have to
• 19:59
Speaker 6: peddle too hard. That's a question, I get all the same.
• 20:01
Speaker 3: Now you're speaking my language.
• 20:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, so they actually are kind of battery power, so
• 20:05
Speaker 6: you have to keep a little motion going. But it's incredible.
• 20:07
Speaker 6: There's a waterfall up there, so if you're somebody who
• 20:09
Speaker 6: does the West Virginia Waterfall Trail, you can check off
• 20:12
Speaker 6: one more waterfall. But a great thing about forty five
• 20:14
Speaker 6: minutes from here. I will tell folks do not drive
• 20:17
Speaker 6: there without buying tickets in advance, because it's very, very popular,
• 20:21
Speaker 6: and a lot of times the different trips throughout the
• 20:23
Speaker 6: day sell out. But rail exports cool thing right here,
• 20:26
Speaker 6: not too far from home, that I think folks don't
• 20:28
  Speaker 6: know about.
• 20:29
Speaker 3: I mean, and again we were focusing primarily on things
• 20:34
Speaker 3: I wanted to hear in the area. But I mean
• 20:38
Speaker 3: all over West Virginia I learn I just like you,
• 20:40
Speaker 3: I learned new things. But here in the Kanawh Valley.
• 20:42
  Speaker 3: I mean, I think a gym that a lot of
• 20:45
Speaker 3: people from out of state know about and people are
• 20:48
Speaker 3: just learning about is the Meek's Mountain Trails. Over in
• 20:51
Speaker 3: Putnam County where I live. I mean, they're killing it
• 20:53
Speaker 3: over there with it, they are killing it.
• 20:54
Speaker 6: That's another place where they continue to grow. And the
• 20:56
Speaker 6: thing that's so phenomenal about that is it is driven
• 20:59
Speaker 6: by a group of volunteers, super super passionate volunteers who
• 21:02
Speaker 6: have worked for years and years to make those trails
• 21:05
Speaker 6: what they are and they are outstanding.
• 21:06
Speaker 3: Indeed they are. Again we're talking with Chelsea Ruby, the
• 21:09
Speaker 3: state Tourism Secretary, and speaking of places to go to
• 21:12
Speaker 3: Dave Allen Show and Fine Viti Live is brought to you,
• 21:13
Speaker 3: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: Another Grand Slam school day at the ballpark with first
• 21:19
Speaker 3: pitch schedule for ten thirty five this morning. Just go
• 21:22
Speaker 3: ahead and take off work the rest of the day, Chelsea,
• 21:23
Speaker 3: Let's just go over to the ballpark ten thirty five
• 21:25
Speaker 3: first pitch. For more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com
• 21:28
Speaker 3: or check out their social media pages. What else is
• 21:31
Speaker 3: on your radar for around the state of West Virginia.
• 21:33
Speaker 6: So another cool thing just to open the Great American Bunge.
• 21:36
Speaker 6: So it's up in Harper's Ferry. You actually you're tied
• 21:38
Speaker 6: into a bungee, you jump into a rock cory. So
• 21:41
Speaker 6: they have these in Canada. They just opened in West Virginia.
• 21:43
Speaker 6: Brand new has opened in the last couple of weeks.
• 21:46
Speaker 6: We're excited about that one. I have not been there,
• 21:49
Speaker 6: but I hear it's pretty cool.
• 21:51
Speaker 3: It sounds like it. I mean again, and West Virginia
• 21:54
Speaker 3: is becoming a tourist destination. But I think we probably
• 21:59
Speaker 3: need to do a little bit. No, I don't mean
• 22:00
Speaker 3: you personally, your office, but I mean I think we
• 22:02
Speaker 3: as West Virginians need to do more to celebrate our
• 22:05
Speaker 3: own state. Because the rest of the country is already
• 22:09
Speaker 3: catching on to West Virginia and the things we have.
• 22:12
Speaker 3: We probably need to do a little bit better job
• 22:14
Speaker 3: as West Virginians to appreciate the things we have in
• 22:17
  Speaker 3: our own state.
• 22:18
Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll tell you. Just this weekend, the BBC put
• 22:21
Speaker 6: out an article of top places to visit in twenty
• 22:23
Speaker 6: twenty five. West Virginia was the only state to make
• 22:25
Speaker 6: the list. Super excited to see that. There were a
• 22:28
Speaker 6: bunch of destinations, but we were the only state to
• 22:30
Speaker 6: get our whole state on the list. But I'll tell you,
• 22:33
Speaker 6: when we look at the research of who's coming to
• 22:34
Speaker 6: West Virginia, what we see is that seventy five percent
• 22:37
Speaker 6: of people who book a trip book it because of
• 22:40
Speaker 6: something they saw on a friend or family members social media.
• 22:44
Speaker 6: So if you think about that for a second, people
• 22:45
Speaker 6: are making their decision plans. Three fourths of them are
• 22:48
Speaker 6: making them based on what they see on Facebook or Instagram.
• 22:51
Speaker 6: So I would encourage all West Virginians not only to
• 22:54
Speaker 6: get out this summer, go explore your home state, but
• 22:56
Speaker 6: post a picture inspire somebody you know that lives in
• 22:59
Speaker 6: a different place, or somebody in a different corner of
• 23:01
Speaker 6: West Virginia to get out and do something great as well.
• 23:03
Speaker 3: Now, you were talking when we had you on Metro
• 23:05
Speaker 3: News Midday with Amanda Baron and I last week. You
• 23:08
Speaker 3: were talking about some things that are going on for
• 23:11
Speaker 3: young people in West Virginia. Kids in schools talk about that.
• 23:14
Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, when we're looking at tourism as a whole,
• 23:17
Speaker 6: we see that the visitation is growing really, really quickly.
• 23:20
Speaker 6: But what we see is that the employment in the
• 23:22
Speaker 6: industry is not growing quite as quick So we're starting
• 23:25
Speaker 6: a number of campaigns to really get people involved in
• 23:28
Speaker 6: the industry and to get kids at a young age
• 23:30
Speaker 6: interested in it and say these are jobs I want
• 23:32
Speaker 6: to stay home in West Virginia for. So in addition
• 23:35
Speaker 6: to the Governor's School for tourism, which we'll start here
• 23:37
Speaker 6: on June twentieth, in about a month or so. We've
• 23:40
Speaker 6: also got a number of things going on. We've got
• 23:42
Speaker 6: money available for teachers who want to take their students
• 23:45
Speaker 6: on field trips. We find that West Virginia kids a
• 23:47
Speaker 6: lot of times they haven't been to places all around
• 23:49
Speaker 6: the state, and sometimes they haven't even been to places
• 23:52
Speaker 6: in their own county. So we've got that field trip funding.
• 23:55
Speaker 6: We've got an online program that's free. It's called Tourism Works.
• 23:58
Speaker 6: Anybody in West Virginia can take it and get a
• 24:00
Speaker 6: free hour of college credit just by getting online and
• 24:04
Speaker 6: taking this class about hospitality. So we've got all kinds
• 24:06
Speaker 6: of stuff, and I'm hoping that kids across the state
• 24:09
Speaker 6: are starting to perk up. Their ears are starting to
• 24:11
Speaker 6: perk up and say, I want to be in tourism
• 24:13
Speaker 6: when I grow up, and I can do that here
• 24:15
Speaker 6: at home. There's no reason for me to leave the state.
• 24:18
Speaker 6: There are good paying jobs in this industry right here
• 24:20
  Speaker 6: at home.
• 24:21
Speaker 3: I mean, when you think about you have a kid
• 24:23
Speaker 3: that has an interest in the outdoors, you know, whether
• 24:26
Speaker 3: it's ATV trails or any of the things that you mentioned.
• 24:31
Speaker 3: I mean are you really going to be working if
• 24:34
Speaker 3: you're having that kind of a job and you're having
• 24:36
Speaker 3: fun doing it. The old saying is is that if
• 24:38
Speaker 3: you find a job you like, you'll never work a
• 24:40
Speaker 3: day in your life. I mean, as you said, a
• 24:42
Speaker 3: lot of young people may not know these opportunities are available.
• 24:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, they are very much available. So over the next
• 24:48
Speaker 6: five years, it's projected over twenty thousand annual job openings
• 24:51
Speaker 6: in the hospitality and tourism sector in West Virginia, So
• 24:54
Speaker 6: twenty thousand each year for the next five years. So
• 24:57
Speaker 6: there's a lot of these jobs. Like you said, they
• 24:59
Speaker 6: are fun jobs. There's a lot of these jobs where
• 25:01
Speaker 6: you're interacting with the public, you're getting to be outside,
• 25:04
Speaker 6: you're doing what you love. And the other thing I'll
• 25:06
Speaker 6: say about the hospitality industry is there's great upward mobility.
• 25:09
Speaker 6: If you think about somebody who starts as a as
• 25:11
  Speaker 6: a front desk clerk at a hotel, there's a great
• 25:14
Speaker 6: possibility if you stick to it and you work really hard,
• 25:17
Speaker 6: that you can work your way all the way up
• 25:18
Speaker 6: to the hotel manager position. So it's a great industry.
• 25:21
Speaker 3: The reason why you couldn't talk about the marketing of
• 25:24
Speaker 3: West Virginia to other states. We spent some time talking
• 25:26
Speaker 3: about marketing it to our own state. But what do
• 25:29
Speaker 3: you do to market this? I mean, you talked about
• 25:32
Speaker 3: that BBC report, which I want to get into that
• 25:34
Speaker 3: a little bit in depth, but talk about the marketing
• 25:37
Speaker 3: that you do elsewhere, because the statistics have shown that,
• 25:44
Speaker 3: like I know what the regatta folks in the CVB said,
• 25:46
Speaker 3: I mean about how many people that came to the
• 25:48
Speaker 3: regatta from d C and from Pittsburgh. I mean almost
• 25:51
Speaker 3: as many as came from West Virginia, which is amazing.
• 25:54
Speaker 3: What about the marketing aspect of here?
• 25:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, so you hit the nail on the head right there.
• 25:58
Speaker 6: So are two biggest markets and are too fast growing
• 26:00
Speaker 6: markets are DC and Pittsburgh. We market in about a
• 26:04
Speaker 6: four to five hour driving distance to the state, so
• 26:08
Speaker 6: anywhere you can drive in four to five hours, we're
• 26:10
Speaker 6: marketing heavily there. So our marketing strategy, if you're in
• 26:13
Speaker 6: any of those cities, you're going to see TV, you're
• 26:16
Speaker 6: going to see radio, digital ads, social print, You're going
• 26:19
Speaker 6: to see a bunch of different touchpoints. We never want
• 26:21
Speaker 6: somebody just to see one ad. So if you think about, well,
• 26:23
Speaker 6: McDonald's puts out a new breakfast sandwich, like their goal
• 26:26
Speaker 6: is for you to see thirty or forty ads about
• 26:28
Speaker 6: that breakfast sandwich. Same thing with West Virginia tourism. So
• 26:31
Speaker 6: we want folks to see our ads over and over
• 26:33
Speaker 6: and over again. So in those markets, we are marketing
• 26:38
Speaker 6: the natural beauty of West Virginia. We're marketing the great towns,
• 26:41
Speaker 6: the fairs, the festivals, the arts, all these different things
• 26:45
Speaker 6: in those towns, and they see them layered over. So
• 26:47
Speaker 6: right now, good example is we just took over Metro
• 26:50
Speaker 6: Center station on the DC metro line. So right there
• 26:54
Speaker 6: downtown twelfth in g that entire station, every billboard, every wrap,
• 26:59
Speaker 6: every wall, well everything in there is wrapped in pictures
• 27:03
Speaker 6: of West Virginia. So it's all information about the Eastern
• 27:06
Speaker 6: panhandles that what that specific ones about everything says just
• 27:09
Speaker 6: one hour away. So we do a lot of these takeovers.
• 27:12
Speaker 6: We've also got buses wrapped buses going in DC. Similar
• 27:15
Speaker 6: things in Pittsburgh. That we try to make sure that
• 27:18
Speaker 6: when we go into a market we make a really
• 27:20
Speaker 6: big splash, that we make sure that everyone who lives
• 27:22
Speaker 6: there is seeing our ads over and over again.
• 27:25
Speaker 3: Can we talk with Chelsea Ruby, the State Tourism Secretary
• 27:27
Speaker 3: of the Dave Island Show, on five eighty Live is
• 27:29
Speaker 3: brought to you in part by Bridge Valley offering custom
• 27:31
Speaker 3: tailored trainings to supply skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
• 27:34
Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley dot edu. And I want to go
• 27:37
Speaker 3: back to West Virginia for a moment talk about the
• 27:38
Speaker 3: small towns. Every town in West Virginia's got something going on.
• 27:43
Speaker 3: It's seemingly. I mean, I know of every town I'm in.
• 27:46
Speaker 3: At the Boone County they have the Coal Festival going on.
• 27:50
Speaker 3: In my home area where I'm originally from, Logan, they
• 27:52
Speaker 3: have the Freedom Festival, and they've got like country music
• 27:55
Speaker 3: superstar Trace Adkins is going to be performing live on
• 27:58
Speaker 3: the streets. And for every one one of those there,
• 28:01
Speaker 3: every town in West Virginia has got something. There's an
• 28:03
Speaker 3: article in the zet mail this morning. I think that
• 28:06
Speaker 3: was done by the food guy, Stephen Keith about some
• 28:10
Speaker 3: things going on a Bucan and every town's got something
• 28:12
  Speaker 3: going on.
• 28:12
Speaker 6: Yeah, there are fares and festivals throughout West Virginia, especially
• 28:17
Speaker 6: over the summer months and into the fall. I could
• 28:20
Speaker 6: go on and on about each and every one of them.
• 28:22
Speaker 6: What I like is that they're all different, that each
• 28:25
Speaker 6: one of these really has a local flare on them.
• 28:27
Speaker 6: It's really unique to the area that they're in. So
• 28:29
Speaker 6: but Cannon just ad their strawberry festival. We've got all
• 28:32
Speaker 6: these different groups who do things. We've got the apple
• 28:35
Speaker 6: Harvest festival that'll go up in the northern part of
• 28:37
Speaker 6: the state when we get into the fall. You can
• 28:39
Speaker 6: find all these farsom festivals on our website wvtourism dot com.
• 28:43
Speaker 6: And I'll tell you that if you go to our
• 28:44
Speaker 6: website and go to that event's calendar, it's the fourth
• 28:47
Speaker 6: or fifth most visited page on our website every month.
• 28:50
Speaker 6: So what we see is that West Virginians go there
• 28:52
Speaker 6: to get their information. But a lot of people when
• 28:54
Speaker 6: they're in town visiting, they're looking for something to do,
• 28:57
Speaker 6: they want to go to a local event, and they
• 28:59
Speaker 6: go in these. So we still find in all of
• 29:01
Speaker 6: our survey research each year that local events, like becoming
• 29:04
Speaker 6: a local, living like a local for a weekend is
• 29:07
Speaker 6: what people want to do. So these fares and festivals,
• 29:09
Speaker 6: I always tell them when I meet with folks who
• 29:11
Speaker 6: are organizing, not only are you doing something really great
• 29:14
Speaker 6: for your community, but you're also providing something really great
• 29:17
Speaker 6: for guests who are in town on the weekend with
• 29:19
  Speaker 6: your festival.
• 29:20
Speaker 3: Go back to that BBC article you reference a little bit. Oh,
• 29:23
  Speaker 3: that's that's pretty good stuff.
• 29:24
Speaker 6: Good stuff. Yeah, you know, it used to be that
• 29:26
Speaker 6: we never made these lists. And when I first got here,
• 29:29
Speaker 6: I kind of banged my head on the wall eight
• 29:31
Speaker 6: years ago saying like, why do these lists come out
• 29:33
Speaker 6: every day and West Virginia is never on them? Every
• 29:35
Speaker 6: travel publication does one, and we changed strategies. What we
• 29:39
Speaker 6: started doing is we invite editors, travel editors and writers
• 29:42
Speaker 6: to West Virginia. So we just had eight of them
• 29:45
Speaker 6: who left here about a week ago. We're constantly bringing
• 29:48
Speaker 6: in more and more of them. And what we found
• 29:50
Speaker 6: is when we bring these travel writers and editors to
• 29:52
Speaker 6: West Virginia and host them for a weekend, let them
• 29:55
Speaker 6: really explore West Virginia, they leave with a completely different impression.
• 30:00
Speaker 6: The last four or five years, we've gotten all the
• 30:01
Speaker 6: big lists, We've gotten Lonely, Planet, Conde, NAS, Travel and
• 30:04
Speaker 6: Leisure USA. Today all these groups are starting to put
• 30:07
Speaker 6: West Virginia on their list of top places to visit
• 30:10
Speaker 6: and this weekend, we got to add one more with
• 30:12
  Speaker 6: the BBC.
• 30:12
Speaker 3: And we were the only state.
• 30:14
Speaker 6: We were the only state.
• 30:15
  Speaker 13: Yeah.
• 30:15
Speaker 6: The other ones were city destinations, and they gave us
• 30:17
Speaker 6: the whole state. And last two years ago we got
• 30:20
Speaker 6: a similar one with Lonely Planet, which is a big
• 30:22
Speaker 6: international publication. They did the World's Greatest Places, and they
• 30:26
Speaker 6: did the same thing. They gave us the whole state.
• 30:29
Speaker 3: I mean, that's pretty good. I mean when you think
• 30:31
Speaker 3: about it, because West Virginia, although it is a smaller state,
• 30:34
Speaker 3: we got a lot going on in every corner of
• 30:37
Speaker 3: the state. There is something. Quickly and then actually have
• 30:40
Speaker 3: a couple of texts for you people with questions, but
• 30:43
Speaker 3: then we'll let you go because I know you got
• 30:44
Speaker 3: a busy day planned for today. Talk about West Virginia
• 30:48
Speaker 3: as a food destination because I know here in the
• 30:51
Speaker 3: Charleston area. Of course we all know about Chef Paul,
• 30:53
Speaker 3: but there's so many other people in addition to him.
• 30:55
Speaker 3: He'd be the first to tell you that are doing
• 30:57
Speaker 3: great things. Huntington is an incredible food town right now,
• 31:00
Speaker 3: the Morgantown area, Martinsburg. We just had the Mayor of
• 31:02
Speaker 3: Martinsburg on the midday show what's Tradeon's becoming a food
• 31:05
Speaker 3: destination as well. And it's not just biscuits and gravy,
• 31:08
Speaker 3: although there's nothing wrong with biscuits and gravy.
• 31:10
Speaker 6: Hey, I love biscuits and gravy as much as anyone else.
• 31:12
Speaker 6: But you're right. So when you look at vacation planning trends,
• 31:15
Speaker 6: foody culture, foody destinations certainly becoming a trend. We're seeing
• 31:20
Speaker 6: that as many as fifty percent of people who plan
• 31:22
Speaker 6: vacations in the US last year planned it specifically to
• 31:25
Speaker 6: go to a restaurant.
• 31:26
Speaker 3: That sounds like me.
• 31:27
Speaker 6: Yeah, so we when we travel, we plan out all
• 31:30
Speaker 6: of our meals, we look at all the restaurants. So
• 31:31
Speaker 6: it's something I can certainly relate to. But what's really
• 31:33
Speaker 6: cool is that we're seeing that trend e merge at
• 31:36
Speaker 6: the same time that we're really seeing an emergence of
• 31:38
Speaker 6: food in West Virginia with all these different restaurants. Last year,
• 31:42
Speaker 6: of course, we had another James Beard nomination over at
• 31:46
Speaker 6: restaurant a Breusy here in town. We had chef Paul
• 31:48
Speaker 6: Wynnet the year before Jim's, and Huntington has gotten a
• 31:51
Speaker 6: lot of recognition. We've got all these places but then
• 31:54
Speaker 6: we've got cool other places that maybe aren't the more
• 31:57
Speaker 6: elevated food we've got, you know, hillbilly hot dogs and
• 32:00
Speaker 6: places like that. I love Dixie's Dairy things like that,
• 32:03
Speaker 6: and so we're seeing that those are becoming increasingly more
• 32:05
  Speaker 6: important popular.
• 32:07
Speaker 3: All I head a text here says ask the Tourism
• 32:09
Speaker 3: Secretary to take a look at Greenbrier straight from the
• 32:11
Speaker 3: airport to the Capitol. Need to spend some money making
• 32:13
Speaker 3: this area shine, as it's the first look to welcome
• 32:16
Speaker 3: you into West Virginia. And I don't know if it's
• 32:19
Speaker 3: something that necessarily you can handle, but I think it's
• 32:21
  Speaker 3: a good point.
• 32:21
  Speaker 6: I think it's a good point. You know, I talked
• 32:23
Speaker 6: to Dominique. I've actually already talked to her today. At
• 32:25
Speaker 6: the airport. We do a lot of work with them,
• 32:27
Speaker 6: certainly something that is important. I know they put that
• 32:30
Speaker 6: new welcome sign in year before last, but I agree
• 32:33
Speaker 6: beautification up there matters. And I'll all send a text
• 32:36
Speaker 6: over to the Highways Commissioner and see if we can
• 32:38
Speaker 6: get something going there.
• 32:38
Speaker 3: All right, final text, and we'll let you go. A
• 32:40
Speaker 3: lot of us says a texture like amusement parks, why
• 32:43
Speaker 3: not bring back the Kenawha County Fair. Hold it at
• 32:45
Speaker 3: the Shawnee Sports Complex or the empty lots at South Reach.
• 32:48
Speaker 6: You know that's an idea I haven't heard it. Sounds
• 32:50
Speaker 6: like a pretty good idea. We can look into it.
• 32:52
Speaker 3: We'll look into it. Hey, Chelsea, I appreciate you being
• 32:54
  Speaker 3: here as always.
• 32:55
Speaker 6: Thank you appreciate it on.

• 36:05
Speaker 3: we'll get into some other things as well. Let's check

Speaker 3: in out with Morgan Tenny. She is the Putnam County
• 36:12
Speaker 3: Development Authority Director and she joins us. Now, welcome to
• 36:15
Speaker 3: the show. Morgan Morgan, are you there? All right? We
• 36:23
Speaker 3: have no Morgan, the A train is working as we speak.
• 36:34
Speaker 3: All right, I guess we have no phone. That's what
• 36:37
Speaker 3: I'm hearing. All I'm not hearing anything. Well, Morgan, we apologize.
• 36:41
Speaker 3: We don't know what the problem is. Well, are you there, Morgan?
• 36:44
Speaker 13: Can you hear me? Yeah?
• 36:45
Speaker 3: There you are there, You are all right.
• 36:47
Speaker 13: Welcome morning. I don't know what happened.
• 36:50
Speaker 3: We got you now, that's all that matters. Welcome to
• 36:52
  Speaker 3: the show.
• 36:53
Speaker 7: Thanks to Dave. Good morning.
• 36:55
Speaker 3: So the Putnam County Development Authority has purchased a this
• 37:00
Speaker 3: this big old tract of land, and actually it's it's
• 37:03
Speaker 3: more than just land, it's a whole dang complex. Tell
• 37:06
  Speaker 3: us about this.
• 37:08
Speaker 13: Yeah, Putnam County Development Authority closed on an industrial building
• 37:12
Speaker 13: in Putnam County. It's a little bit more than eighty
• 37:15
Speaker 13: four thousand square feet. This has been many months in
• 37:18
Speaker 13: the making, and we're just so excited that we are
• 37:20
Speaker 13: going to have property available for industry. It's it's going
• 37:25
Speaker 13: to be right in front of the new I sixty
• 37:28
Speaker 13: four Cologne and Exit Dave. So it's going to be
• 37:31
Speaker 13: prime for any type of distribution or logistics.
• 37:35
Speaker 3: So who would be the ideal tenant for this morning?
• 37:38
Speaker 13: So really, anybody who is going to be distributing goods?
• 37:41
Speaker 13: I mean, we you cannot get any closer. I mean
• 37:44
Speaker 13: I can honestly throw a rock to the interstate from
• 37:46
Speaker 13: the building. But you're going to be right on I
• 37:48
Speaker 13: sixty four. And then how close we are to the
• 37:51
Speaker 13: I seventy seven I seventy nine interchange into Ohio. You know,
• 37:54
Speaker 13: we can be within half of the US population within
• 37:58
Speaker 13: a day's drive. Any type of good that somebody would
• 38:01
Speaker 13: be distributing would really be ideal for this location.
• 38:04
Speaker 3: And again, the area is really growing and it's about
• 38:08
Speaker 3: to grow even more, and you alluded to it with
• 38:10
Speaker 3: that I sixty four colloding interchange right.
• 38:13
Speaker 13: Yes, so it's set to be complete in follows twenty
• 38:16
Speaker 13: twenty six. It's under construction right now and this building,
• 38:21
Speaker 13: you know, is going to be right in front of
• 38:23
Speaker 13: that exit. So our board of directors felt like it
• 38:25
Speaker 13: was a really good move for PCDA to purchase it.
• 38:28
Speaker 13: And you know, David, it's great to tell businesses about
• 38:32
Speaker 13: why they should come to West Virginia, why they should
• 38:34
Speaker 13: come to Putdham County. But if you don't have anywhere
• 38:36
Speaker 13: to put them, you don't really have You're kind of
• 38:38
Speaker 13: a salesman without any product to sell. So we're excited
• 38:42
Speaker 13: to actually have available inventory to solicit new investment in
• 38:46
  Speaker 13: West Virginia.
• 38:47
Speaker 3: So how do you go about marketing this place?
• 38:49
  Speaker 2: Morgan?
• 38:50
Speaker 13: Well, you're helping, so thank you.
• 38:52
  Speaker 6: There's one, there's one, there's one down.
• 38:55
Speaker 13: But you know what, we've we've actually been working behind
• 38:58
Speaker 13: the scenes some already at trade before we even closed.
• 39:02
Speaker 13: We have a lot of folks that are interested in
• 39:04
Speaker 13: the area. With all of the residential homes that we
• 39:06
Speaker 13: have coming on the market, but also following the new
• 39:09
Speaker 13: core project in Apple Growth. But we've also been sharing
• 39:14
Speaker 13: it with our news channels, so you might see it
• 39:17
Speaker 13: in the news in the next day or two. But
• 39:19
Speaker 13: also we've been behind the scenes reaching out to businesses,
• 39:23
Speaker 13: site consultants in different companies that we think would have interest,
• 39:27
Speaker 13: and we have some that are already interested, which is
• 39:29
  Speaker 13: really great.
• 39:30
  Speaker 3: I mean, I know you can't tell us a whole
• 39:31
Speaker 3: lot about it right now, but can you are you
• 39:35
Speaker 3: at liberty to give us a HNT on any of
• 39:36
Speaker 3: those it might be interested or not?
• 39:38
Speaker 13: Well, honestly, honestly, Dave, like I would hate to share
• 39:41
Speaker 13: anything that wouldn't come to fruition, but I mean I will,
• 39:44
Speaker 13: I will stand by. It was utilized as a distribution
• 39:47
Speaker 13: facility before we closed, and that's really it's really what
• 39:52
Speaker 13: the dirt tells you. It's eighty four thousand square feet,
• 39:55
Speaker 13: it's got twelve doc doors, it's enough space for late down.
• 40:01
Speaker 13: You know, it's already remote gated. So if the building
• 40:05
Speaker 13: just tells you anything, it tells you that it would
• 40:08
Speaker 13: be ideal for distributions.
• 40:09
Speaker 3: And what was there before Morgan, what operated out there, so.
• 40:15
Speaker 13: There was a US Food. They were the owner of
• 40:18
Speaker 13: the building. They're maintaining their other location on Virginia Avenue.
• 40:22
Speaker 13: But actually it was built for Continental Cam Company back
• 40:26
Speaker 13: back in the day, so it was actually a manufacturing
• 40:28
Speaker 13: plant when it was originally built.
• 40:30
Speaker 3: So do we have I mean, is it ready to
• 40:33
Speaker 3: go now? Is it a turnkey type deal or what?
• 40:37
Speaker 13: So the distribution space is turnkey, somebody could move their
• 40:40
Speaker 13: goods in tomorrow. The office space is going to be
• 40:42
Speaker 13: built out according to what the tenant is wanting. But
• 40:46
Speaker 13: the distribution space is.
• 40:47
Speaker 3: Ready to go, and you're looking at least in this
• 40:49
Speaker 3: out I understand. And again I love the fact that
• 40:53
Speaker 3: you talked about being I think sometimes in West Virginia
• 40:57
Speaker 3: we forget how close we are to the mate And
• 41:00
Speaker 3: I just talked about it with the Tourism secretary. How
• 41:02
Speaker 3: close we are to d C. How close we are
• 41:05
Speaker 3: to Pittsburgh and Charlotte, in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and I
• 41:09
Speaker 3: mean a day's drive with as you said, a large
• 41:12
Speaker 3: percentage of the US population. And we got rails, we
• 41:15
Speaker 3: got water, we got a lot going for us here
• 41:18
  Speaker 3: in West Virginia.
• 41:19
Speaker 13: Absolutely, this building is actually just adjacent to a CSX
• 41:23
Speaker 13: rail line. So it could even be rail served. But
• 41:25
Speaker 13: you know, sometimes I like to turn challenges into opportunities.
• 41:29
Speaker 13: States Did you ever travel and you talk to someone,
• 41:31
Speaker 13: You're like, I'm from West Virginia. Have you ever been there?
• 41:34
Speaker 13: And their answer is no, But I've driven through it
• 41:36
Speaker 13: and it's like, oh man, you've got a visit, right.
• 41:38
Speaker 13: But if people are driving through it, that points to
• 41:41
Speaker 13: the fact that we are close to everything around us.
• 41:43
Speaker 13: We are logistically we are perfectly located for companies who
• 41:49
Speaker 13: want to be on the East Coast.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: I mean, and I'm not going to be the one
• 41:54
Speaker 3: to say West Virginia doesn't have its problems, because West Virginia,
• 41:57
Speaker 3: like all states and all communities and all cities, we
• 41:59
Speaker 3: do have problems. But we've also got a lot of
• 42:01
Speaker 3: positive things going on as well. And I really I
• 42:04
Speaker 3: think it just goes to show you how much potential
• 42:08
Speaker 3: that there is in this area, and specifically in Putnham County.
• 42:12
  Speaker 3: I'm a little bit biased because that's where I live,
• 42:14
Speaker 3: you know, and I'm the unofficial mayor of Tayes Valley.
• 42:18
Speaker 3: They tell me that's what TJ. Meadow's coused me. But
• 42:20
Speaker 3: people talk about the growth of the area that it
• 42:24
Speaker 3: saw back in the nineteen nineties. I wasn't living there then,
• 42:27
Speaker 3: but you reference new Core with New Core coming in,
• 42:29
Speaker 3: and many of those families are choosing to live in
• 42:34
Speaker 3: the Putnam County area because we have some of the
• 42:37
Speaker 3: best schools in the state. We have an insanely low
• 42:40
Speaker 3: crime rate compared to other areas, great places to dine,
• 42:43
Speaker 3: great places to shop, locally owned businesses and things of that.
• 42:46
Speaker 3: Plus you got this right down the road from where
• 42:48
Speaker 3: I live. You've got this massive housing complex going in
• 42:51
Speaker 3: that's pretty much going to double or triple the amount
• 42:54
Speaker 3: of traffic on Taes Valley Road. And people that have
• 42:57
Speaker 3: heard me say on this show many many times, you
• 43:00
Speaker 3: never hear me complain about a traffic problem. I may
• 43:02
Speaker 3: complain about the drivers and the stupid decisions they make,
• 43:05
Speaker 3: but as far as traffic products, because that's a sign
• 43:07
Speaker 3: of growth, and that's just another another feather in the
• 43:10
Speaker 3: proverbial cap of what's going on in the Putnam County
• 43:12
Speaker 3: and really, for that matter, the entire Advantage Corridor area.
• 43:16
Speaker 13: We have so much going on, David. Honestly, I'm really
• 43:19
Speaker 13: proud of my team and my board for being proactive.
• 43:22
Speaker 13: You know, we've been proactive on housing. I've been on
• 43:24
Speaker 13: the show talking about that before. So we want to
• 43:26
Speaker 13: see holistic development in Putnam County. We have over a
• 43:30
Speaker 13: thousand units being built over the next three years in
• 43:33
Speaker 13: Putnam County. For housing, we're working on workforce development with
• 43:36
Speaker 13: starting apprenticeships and we have this Hometown Advantage campaign talking
• 43:40
Speaker 13: about skilled trades in West Virginia. But then we're also
• 43:43
Speaker 13: working on site development, like purchasing this property and trying
• 43:47
Speaker 13: to get new businesses or even help a local business
• 43:50
Speaker 13: who needs to grow by retaining them with this piece
• 43:52
Speaker 13: of property. So we see economic development as basically one
• 43:57
Speaker 13: big pie, right, You've got to focus on all these
• 44:00
Speaker 13: different areas. And I'm really proud that we have such
• 44:02
Speaker 13: a small team, but we're really working in all these
• 44:04
Speaker 13: different avenues to try to increase the tax space and
• 44:08
Speaker 13: also create jobs. And I'm going to pause for a
• 44:11
Speaker 13: second too and say I'm increasing the tax space. We
• 44:14
Speaker 13: don't want all of the tax burden to be on
• 44:17
Speaker 13: our residents. We know our bedroom community, so that means
• 44:21
Speaker 13: that we've got to have more private investment in the area.
• 44:24
Speaker 13: And you know that's one of the reasons that we
• 44:26
Speaker 13: want to in this building. We want to leave the building.
• 44:28
Speaker 13: We want to make sure that we're supporting the business community,
• 44:31
Speaker 13: but also that we're supporting our residents of Pudham County
• 44:33
  Speaker 13: as well.
• 44:34
Speaker 3: We have a text to the show here. Somebody ask
• 44:36
Speaker 3: any updates on a business in Fraser's Bottom at Putnam County.
• 44:38
Speaker 3: Anything new on that front. I know they've been to
• 44:40
Speaker 3: talk about about a business possibly going over there. You
• 44:42
Speaker 3: don't have to get into specifics, but is there anything
• 44:44
Speaker 3: new to report? There?
• 44:46
Speaker 13: Nothing new to report, There has been nothing solidified at
• 44:49
  Speaker 13: this time.
• 44:50
Speaker 3: All right, very good? All right. So somebody is interested
• 44:53
Speaker 3: Morgan in looking at this property, moving their location their
• 44:57

• 48:54
Speaker 3: D's Tony Haslett says the victim, forty two year old
• 48:56
Speaker 3: Tiffany Adkins of Marmette, was shot as she was walking
• 49:00
Speaker 3: into the Sheets on a corcl in Kanas City, and
• 49:02
Speaker 3: according to Hazlett, she simply was walking into the store
• 49:07
Speaker 3: and passed in front of a vehicle. Near the vehicle
• 49:09
Speaker 3: standing was eighteen year old Jacob Fields of Charleston. He
• 49:13
Speaker 3: allegedly wiping down the barrel of a gun when it discharged.
• 49:16
Speaker 3: She's been charged with wanton endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. It
• 49:20
Speaker 3: was a legal gun. He is being held in the
• 49:23
Speaker 3: South Central Regional Jail on fifty thousand dollars bailed. Just
• 49:27
Speaker 3: a horrible story there. The other story about the GreenPower layoffs,
• 49:30
Speaker 3: and by the way, mister Meadows did an excellent commentary
• 49:33
Speaker 3: about the layoffs available on social media and also at
• 49:35
Speaker 3: the website. The company in part is at least blaming tariffs,
• 49:40
Speaker 3: but TJ does a deep dive to the business practices
• 49:42
Speaker 3: have said company, and this company, I'm put in it mildly,
• 49:47
Speaker 3: has had a lot of issues. I actually had a
• 49:51
Speaker 3: comment on Dave Alan Radio and Facebook on an article
• 49:54
Speaker 3: that I shared from our website, and an actual employee commented,
• 50:01
Speaker 3: in his words, not mine, the worst company I've ever
• 50:04
Speaker 3: worked for. Again his words, not mine. He was one
• 50:06
Speaker 3: of the ones that was laid off, and of course
• 50:08
Speaker 3: that's his story. I would be glad to have others,
• 50:11
Speaker 3: you know, from the countail to the company side as
• 50:13
Speaker 3: well anytime on the show, and time will tell what
• 50:16
Speaker 3: actually does come from all this, But it doesn't look
• 50:18
Speaker 3: good on the surface. Tjan and Wilson. We'll have more
• 50:21
Speaker 3: than the story coming up on talk line. Older adults
• 50:24
Speaker 3: should protect themselves against severe respiratory disease. Talk to your
• 50:27

Speaker 3: the US Department of Health and Human Services. Text says
• 50:37
Speaker 3: the Tays Valley and Hurricane area need roundabouts. Please bring
• 50:41
Speaker 3: the roundabouts and eliminate future plans for additional stoplights. Stoplights
• 50:45
Speaker 3: caused congestion. Roundabouts do not, and I don't disagree with
• 50:49
Speaker 3: what the text is saying. This person as texted and
• 50:52
Speaker 3: others have texted the show before about roundabouts. My only
• 50:55
Speaker 3: thing with roundabouts says you heard me say it before.
• 50:57
Speaker 3: West Virginians can't handle a three way stop, how are
• 51:00
Speaker 3: we going to handle roundabouts? So but not a bad
• 51:03
Speaker 3: idea in theory. Tex says, if you read the story
• 51:05
Speaker 3: of Elon's rocket ship blowing up all that government money
• 51:08
Speaker 3: up in flames, kind of some bolic consider an Elon
• 51:10
Speaker 3: slashing and burning the government. But we got to go
• 51:13
Speaker 3: to Mars or at least build new missiles, and the
• 51:15
Speaker 3: guys of going to Mars heaven is real. Jesus is
• 51:18
Speaker 3: going to be asking a lot of Americans. So you
• 51:20
Speaker 3: chose building missiles over food, housing and healthcare for the poor,
• 51:24
Speaker 3: then he's going to open up the trap door in
• 51:26
Speaker 3: the cloud floor, cloud floor. I don't know how you
• 51:29
Speaker 3: follow up with that. TJ. Meadows, bail me, man, bail me.
• 51:32
Speaker 15: Go read your Bible. Okay, I do it every day.
• 51:35
Speaker 15: Go read your Bible. Okay, Love God, love people. There
• 51:38
Speaker 15: you go, There you go.
• 51:39
Speaker 3: It's that easy. So you guys are going to get
• 51:41
Speaker 3: into the green power story a little bit more on
• 51:43
Speaker 3: talk On today, right, Yeah, we're going to.
• 51:44
Speaker 15: Dive into it a little bit. Mitch Carmichael is going
• 51:46
Speaker 15: to join us at ten oh six. You know, he's
• 51:49
Speaker 15: been an architect of economic development in this state for
• 51:52
Speaker 15: some time. And I think that one of the larger
• 51:55
Speaker 15: narratives in this story is to say, do we have
• 51:58
Speaker 15: the stomach for this in West Virginia. So, you know,
• 52:01
Speaker 15: venture capital, private equity place ten bets one or two
• 52:04
Speaker 15: may pan, right, So it's not really that surprising when
• 52:08
Speaker 15: you look at it that we've had a failure here
• 52:10
Speaker 15: with green power, But does the state have the stomach
• 52:13
Speaker 15: for that? I don't know that we necessarily bail out
• 52:16
Speaker 15: of what folks like the Economic Development Authority, and those
• 52:19
Speaker 15: folks do I think, you know, we have some winners.
• 52:22
Speaker 3: Do we have some losers? Sure, But that's the game.
• 52:24
Speaker 3: That's the way it works. I mean, it's all based
• 52:26
  Speaker 3: on speculation anyway. I mean, I mean, obviously there's a
• 52:28
Speaker 3: lot of data that goes into it, but it can
• 52:31
Speaker 3: sometimes be a crapshoot and it can be that's business. Yeah,
• 52:35
Speaker 3: that's business. That's the way it works.
• 52:36
Speaker 15: Now, this particular company, as you said, a lot of issues.
• 52:41
  Speaker 3: I don't think tariffs.
• 52:42
Speaker 15: Maybe tariffs was the nail on the coffin, It's not
• 52:44
Speaker 15: what started this deal, all right.
• 52:46
Speaker 3: Those guys will be coming up with talk Line ten
