Transcript
- 0:00Oh, there it is.
- 0:12Hello.
- 0:15Wow.
- 0:18That was exciting, huh?
- 0:22This is episode 48 of onefjef.
- 0:2648 is best known as the number of the lower 48 US states, but it also
- 0:30quietly dominates everyday life because it divides so cleanly, which
- 0:35is why manufacturers love using it in packaging, shipping, and bulk quantities.
- 0:40In numerology, 48 is often associated with discipline, material success, and
- 0:45building stability through persistence, though, depending on who you ask,
- 0:48it That either sounds profound or exactly like something printed on the
- 0:53wall of a mid level corporate office.
- 0:56I was planning to start season two with this episode but I'm two
- 0:59episodes away from episode 50.
- 1:0250 feels like a better delineator than 48 or 49.
- 1:07So season two of one F Jeff will officially begin with the 50th episode
- 1:13in two weeks, and my guest for that 50th episode will be my dear friend Chris
- 1:18Casey, who you might remember from episode two or episode 25, or other episodes.
- 1:26Which will go unmentioned at this point.
- 1:29He was also the winner of the email, the podcast contest last
- 1:32year, which was an exciting moment for this podcast and for him.
- 1:36And he's still reveling in that joy and the glory from that victory.
- 1:41I think it's safe to say that his life.
- 1:43Has been forever changed by this podcast and he's coming on the podcast
- 1:50for the 50th episode to talk about the ways in which it's changed his
- 1:53life and about the new season and so forth, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:58If you were expecting an interview this week, I apologize.
- 2:01I apologize if you were expecting this episode to come out on Wednesday.
- 2:05You know, the thing about starting a new life in a different
- 2:18country is that it's hard.
- 2:22Starting a new life anywhere is hard.
- 2:25Starting a new life in a different country where you don't really
- 2:28speak the language is hard.
- 2:31It's still hard to eat, you know, and it's frustrating because like I
- 2:35can play the dumb gringo in a lot of situations But going into like a market
- 2:39and like haggling about food prices and stuff that to me feels like that's
- 2:46out of my comfort zone way out and which again I should do it, but It's
- 2:51been difficult and like even figuring out What I can really cook in the tiny
- 2:55kitchen or what kind of foods I can eat.
- 2:58It's just been hard.
- 2:59And I've been spending a lot of money on food because I haven't
- 3:01made food in the apartment.
- 3:03I've made some, I make breakfast and lunch, but dinners are hard
- 3:06and it's just the awkward feeling.
- 3:08You know, I don't like it.
- 3:09If I had somebody here with me, I often think like if I came, I moved here with
- 3:13a partner or something or with a friend, I think it'd be a totally different
- 3:16experience because having somebody like a partner in crime makes it a lot easier.
- 3:21They deflect, right?
- 3:24A little bit.
- 3:26But doing it on your own, you know, it's a whole different level of, uh, of couraging
- 3:31and getting out of your comfort zone.
- 3:32And, uh, I mean, I'm doing it, but I'm just saying, fucking hard.
- 3:38Speaking of hard, I guess, um, there was an earthquake this
- 3:43week, and that was exciting.
- 3:45A lot of earthquakes come in here through the Mexico City area, Mexico area, so
- 3:50much so that they have an alert system that's pretty advanced, it seems like.
- 3:54Because they usually come in from the west coast near, like, Oaxaca
- 3:57is where a lot of the earthquakes.
- 3:59And it takes like, 30 or 45 seconds for the earthquake to get from Oaxaca to here.
- 4:04So they have a leeway, there's a lead time.
- 4:07So these alarms will go off whenever there's an earthquake on the west
- 4:09coast, just in case it comes here.
- 4:11But, it didn't.
- 4:13There was no earthquake.
- 4:14I didn't feel anything anyway, but the alarms were terrifying.
- 4:18My phone alarms started going crazy, and then outside the alarms went crazy,
- 4:23and I was like, should I go outside now?
- 4:24I didn't, I didn't say this.
- 4:26I kind of said it in my head to myself, and then I saw everybody out
- 4:29there, so I was like, oh, I should probably go out there just in case.
- 4:33But in this neighborhood, there's no dots with arrows pointed at them, which
- 4:37is a very uniquely Mexico City thing.
- 4:41I've never seen this anywhere else.
- 4:43You know, they've had their share of earthquakes here, of course, and it's
- 4:46no joke, but you're walking around a lot of the neighborhoods and you'll see
- 4:50this, like, a big dot with four arrows pointed at it, and that's where you're
- 4:54supposed to go if there's an earthquake.
- 4:58But, I mean, the dot's only big enough for a handful of people, so
- 5:01you're gonna need overflow dots.
- 5:05Right?
- 5:06Do people think that the dot is really the safe place to be?
- 5:08Because I've seen some of these dots with four arrows around them in places
- 5:13that I would think wouldn't possibly be safe in an earthquake, like practically
- 5:17underneath overhangs and so forth.
- 5:19Like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 5:21Uh, but we have none in this neighborhood, so nobody knew where
- 5:24to go, so I walked out there.
- 5:26People were looking at the sky for some reason, and I thought,
- 5:29is this a different alarm?
- 5:30Is there an alien coming?
- 5:32Because why is everybody looking?
- 5:32I looked at the sky at a certain point.
- 5:34You know, you hate when they do that.
- 5:35You stare at something and then you look, too.
- 5:38There was nothing to see.
- 5:39It was just the sky.
- 5:40Perhaps a cloud or two.
- 5:43Anyway, I'm alive.
- 5:44The earthquake didn't come.
- 5:46At least, I didn't feel it.
- 5:47And, uh, all is well.
- 5:49Now I know what the phone sounds when there's an earthquake.
- 5:52And I heard it twice this week, because two days after the earthquake actual,
- 5:57they'd had an earthquake test at 11 a. m., which sounds I don't know.
- 6:01Seems like overkill.
- 6:02Nobody went outside.
- 6:04It wasn't I didn't know if I was supposed to, but I'm not saying
- 6:08I want there to be an earthquake.
- 6:09I really am not, for the record.
- 6:12I am saying, though, that a small earthquake, with no loss
- 6:16of life, would be exciting.
- 6:21That's all.
- 6:22Maybe I'll play the sound of the siren.
- 6:23I've got it recorded.
- 6:24I'll play that for you.
- 6:26Right here.
- 6:27So there's supposed to be a fire alarm test in a few minutes here.
- 6:33It's now 1059?
- 6:341058? And I'm just recording to see if I can capture the magical moment on audio.
- 6:411059. All right, very exciting.
- 6:43Edge of my seat.
- 6:44Edge of your seat?
- 6:45Edge of my seat for sure.
- 6:47Actually, I'm kind of slouched in my couch right now, so I'm
- 6:49not really at the edge of it.
- 6:52Oh, there it is.
- 6:58Hello.
- 6:59Alerta sismica.
- 7:02Alerta sismica.
- 7:05Alerta sismica.
- 7:08Alright, alright, shut up.
- 7:15That was exciting, huh?
- 7:16The big article for this week for the mainstream media, mostly in the
- 7:20United States, but all over the world, really, about Mexico is that Mexico
- 7:25City is sinking into the ground so quickly it can be seen from space.
- 7:32I saw this article so many places.
- 7:34My mother sent me this article.
- 7:36And again, it's truly surprising because honestly the only news and
- 7:41believe me I've tried to find news about Mexico City in the Western media,
- 7:45but the only stories they seem to really like to report on are I mean
- 7:50cartels, of course Any kind of violence in general like the shooting at the
- 7:54pyramids recently immigrants, of course immigrants immigrants immigrants and then
- 8:02Sinking into the ground, Mexico City.
- 8:04Or water shortages, Mexico City.
- 8:06It's always negative, which good, because it's true.
- 8:09It's not good here.
- 8:10Nobody likes it.
- 8:12Everybody's here against their will.
- 8:14So, do not come.
- 8:17Haha, it's a joke everybody makes here.
- 8:19Says, tells people, don't say it's good.
- 8:25Anyway, what else?
- 8:27As this is the wrapping up of season one, this episode, and the next,
- 8:30the next episode, and I'm saying it here so that I will do it, right?
- 8:35I am going to, uh, have like a season one A look back, you know, like I will
- 8:41remember you, you know, I mean that kind of thing I won't be able to use
- 8:45that song because I will get taken down from Spotify or something, but it'll be
- 8:50in my mind And hopefully your mind too But I'll be playing some highlights of
- 8:56the first 46 7 episodes of this podcast and no tears, no tears at all from
- 9:03anybody because we are OneFjefPodcast.
- 9:04com We're now going into season two.
- 9:08And if there were tears, you know, save them for like a phone call, call
- 9:14the podcast and cry on the phone.
- 9:17That phone number is in the show notes.
- 9:18I cannot remember it to save my life.
- 9:20669 241 5882. I think that's it.
- 9:24669 241 5882. Somebody call 669 241 5882, country code one, and let
- 9:33me know if it, if it's the number.
- 9:34Just leave a message, because if I get it right, I don't need it anymore.
- 9:37669 241 5882. How about that, brain?
- 9:42Good job.
- 9:43When you least expect it, that old brain just
- 9:48Anyway, so yeah, compilation of season 1 highlights coming, and then
- 9:52Chris Casey episode 50, beginning of season 2, and then puppies and
- 9:56rainbows, and lollipops, and gumdrops.
- 10:01So many gumdrops.
- 10:03So many gumdrops.
- 10:06Uh, several people messaged me, Oh, is Cinco de Mayo fun there?
- 10:13Do they do things?
- 10:14Do they have No, no, no.
- 10:16They don't really do that.
- 10:18Boo, boo, boo, boo, boo.
- 10:20Uh, what an episode.
- 10:23I'm glad there's another episode after this one in Season 1, because I don't
- 10:27want Season 1 to go out with this episode.
- 10:30Nobody does.
- 10:31Although maybe it's the perfect way for it to go out.
- 10:33But it doesn't matter, because it's not going out that way.
- 10:37What if episode 49 disappears, Jef?
- 10:41What?
- 10:42What if episode 49 disappears?
- 10:46What do you mean disappears?
- 10:48Like what if it, you know, just like goes missing?
- 10:52I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 10:55Okay, um, I think that's all for me for now.
- 10:59I'll try to throw some other stuff in here to make this a little
- 11:02bit more of a chunky episode.
- 11:04If you know what I mean, not chunky as in like, Poop chunks.
- 11:07Chunky isn't like content, right?
- 11:09You understood.
- 11:10You didn't need me to say poop, but I did anyway.
- 11:13And more meaty episodes, or more smooth, non chunky episodes will be coming out
- 11:19in the next week, two, three, four.
- 11:21I've got interviews already recorded, so don't you go a worryin about that thing,
- 11:28because everything's gonna be all right.
- 11:31Patreon subscribers, I love you.
- 11:33If you're not a Patreon subscriber, I love you anyway.
- 11:36But I will love you more if you do go to patreon.
- 11:39com slash onefjef and sign up for as little as five dollars a month.
- 11:43Extra content, early episodes sometimes, other stuff yet to be
- 11:47determined, but absolutely it's going to be the place to be.
- 11:52You don't want to be one of the proletariat, you want
- 11:55to be one of the tariots.
- 11:57Or the anti proletariats.
- 12:00Patreon.
- 12:01com slash onefjef.
- 12:03Go there now.
- 12:04Do that thing.
- 12:04Do it all.
- 12:05Do it.
- 12:06Bing.
- 12:08Oh, no, I was about to ask you something, but I decided against it because it
- 12:12would go down a whole nother rabbit hole and I don't feel like that's necessary.
- 12:17Mexico City is sinking into the ground, although I haven't
- 12:21I wish you could see it visibly, because it's about a foot a year in some places,
- 12:25I think, which is a significant amount for any area of land to drop in one year.
- 12:33Like, a foot?
- 12:35It might even be more than that, I don't know.
- 12:38Everybody says Mexico City is this like remarkable walking
- 12:42city and I think it's true.
- 12:43I think it is.
- 12:44I've said this many times myself It's a great walking city many parts of it are
- 12:48anyway, but it's also not a great walking city It's also a dangerous walking city
- 12:53combined with the fact that you don't need to get there You know, prove that
- 12:56you can drive to get a driver's license.
- 12:59There's also not really many crosswalks.
- 13:03I mean there's some but not very many, and the ones that there are are kind of
- 13:05confusing and you're always having to like look for where the crosswalk is.
- 13:09But usually the crosswalk is just you looking at the traffic light
- 13:12to see if it's green or red.
- 13:13So you know whether to cross or not.
- 13:15And sometimes that's not easy.
- 13:16It's, it's sketchy.
- 13:17And there's some intersections here that are truly like unhinged, several
- 13:22lanes of traffic merging into one while people are trying to cross the street.
- 13:26It's, it's nuts.
- 13:28And then the sidewalks are legitimate, like, but I understand.
- 13:32I'm not judging because it's very hard to maintain sidewalk
- 13:35smoothness when your city is sinking at rates of up to a foot a year.
- 13:42Like your sidewalks are going to get messed up, just the way it is.
- 13:45But they are perilous, and I'm still impressed with myself.
- 13:47Knock on wood that I have not tripped or fallen on the sidewalk yet.
- 13:53Not yet.
- 13:53I never will.
- 13:54I never will.
- 13:56Almost.
- 13:57Very close.
- 13:58Many times.
- 13:59But, uh, using my highly attuned balance, thanks to years of yoga
- 14:05practice, I was able to right myself.
- 14:09And not.
- 14:10I have a tumble under the Mexico City streets.
- 14:15Not today, my friends.
- 14:18No tumble today.
- 14:20Tumble tomorrow, maybe, but not tumble today.
- 14:23No tumble today.
- 14:27All right, like, subscribe, rate, and review the podcast.
- 14:30Thank you all for listening.
- 14:31I, I don't know.
- 14:33I'm convinced there's something interesting about the way
- 14:36that I talk about this crap.
- 14:38Like that's what the podcast is really is me just like being like,
- 14:41oh, I know that I'm good at that that I can talk and into a microphone
- 14:46or interview people or whatever.
- 14:48I know that I'm good at that.
- 14:50But, I mean, am I?
- 14:51I don't even know.
- 14:52I'm not asking you for praise.
- 14:53Yes, I am.
- 14:54I'm asking you for praise.
- 14:55I'm absolutely asking for praise.
- 14:56669 241 5882. Ah, I remember the phone number.
- 15:02I hope that's the right one.
- 15:03I really do.
- 15:04If it's not, it's going to be bad for, you know, Farmer John.
- 15:07God damn it, this isn't onefjef the podcast.
- 15:09I told you, hooligans.
- 15:12Getting my shotgun.
- 15:14All right, uh, enough of this tomfoolery.
- 15:17Episode 48.
- 15:19Wow, how about that?
- 15:22Good job, Jef Taylor.
- 15:23Good job, buddy.
- 15:24I hope you're all doing extremely well, and if you're not doing well, that
- 15:27you're at least accepting that part of life is not doing well sometimes,
- 15:32but you'll do well again soon enough.
- 15:35I promise.
- 15:37And I'll leave you With a quote from Ovid, big fan of Ovid, I think
- 15:45his first name was Bob, Bob Ovid, Jim, Jim Ovid, Jimmy, Jimmy Ovid.
- 15:51Everything changes, nothing is lost.
- 15:56I'll see you next week.
- 15:57Very good, Jeffrey.
