Transcript
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Dang.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It is time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do where we taste and rank some beer.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: That's what a real beer sounds like.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Damon, how's it going over there?
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Good thing I'm here.
- 0:32SPEAKER_04: Strong pole ran down his knuckles.
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: It was so good.
- 0:37SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Joining the ranks of your little worthy to take the opening crack.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Damon.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: You guys, you're fired.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: Tired.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: I even waited for the signal.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I love it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: I love it, ma'am.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: After I had to mute all of you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Uh so Phil, what are we drinking tonight?
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Tonight, we are drinking a true DD beer, The Griffin, brewed by Grim Brothers Brewing from Loveland, Colorado.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Shout out to our follower in Loveland.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Uh this except he's in Longmont.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Same Colorado different guy.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: They're like what, 30 minutes apart-ish.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Phil was thinking about somebody else.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: The other listener.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: I have a family that lived in Loveland once.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Shout out to them.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: They don't live there anymore, but they used to.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: So let me go to our analytics and see how many long Loveland Loveland followers.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: See?
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Stephen Ross is messing it up.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: It's right.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Uh so uh this can, because I'm just gonna steal this ball out here for a little bit because the can is in my hand, is glorious.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Uh Griffin right on the front of the can, wings outstretched, perched upon what maybe he looks like I don't even know.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Uh rooftop?
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Is that kind of what that is?
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Treescape in the back, possibly setting sun in the background.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Um their logo at the top, too, kind of looks almost like I don't know, a phoenix-ish holding two beer steins.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: If Wizards of the Coast made a beer, I feel like it would look like this.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: That's a very like German symbol.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: It is, I agree.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Holding two two frothy beers.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: And then there's almost some like filigree around the edges, too, as well, that have filigree.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: Just makes me want to start singing roll out the barrel.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Well that's what the word is.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: We're making up words tonight.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: That's a real word you asked.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: Is the can feel a little matte and not as silky smooth as a big thing?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Is it very matte finish on this can as well?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: That's a lot bigger word than the that what was that?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: We just used ire the other night.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: Okay, wow.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Uh anyway, we're getting sidetracked.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: There's a filigree.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Beautiful.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I think this might be a dragon, but it kind of looks like it has legs.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: You see that in the filigree?
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: No, because I'm the only one that cares about the filigree.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: We've all moved on.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I see that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: This is a blood orange hefevisor.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So, first thoughts.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Take a sip.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: What are we thinking?
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: I feel as though we're spending so much time talking about the can.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, there's a beer inside of there.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: In part because we don't really have a lot to say about the beer.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: I so for being a blood orange beer, I don't taste a whole lot of orange.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: I I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with the flavor profile of a blood orange to really rule it out.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: I feel like I can smell a little bit of citrus.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Like I the smell is there.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: I don't necessarily identify the flavor, and that could just be my palate.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Um I think there's a difference between this Bavarian style Hefeweizen versus maybe what we in America think of as like a normal Hefeweizen.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Not normal, but non-Bavarian style Hefeweizen.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: This I could tell.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Like there is a difference.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: There's a distinct taste, I feel like that that carries.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's um it's probably yeast, maybe it's the is that it is that what I'm picking up.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: I feel as though a lot of times the yeast is the really sort of defining characteristic for Hefeweizens.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: Um they give it that sort of really particular flavor.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: I think Ross, you were saying that you felt as though you noticed some banana sorts of flavors.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: I get the more that I let it sit on my tongue after I've um swallowed it, I get more pepper.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: I get like a little bit of a peppery sort of aftertaste to it, which would be from the most likely from the east as well.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: I almost feel like it so a while back we had a half where they leaned into saying that it was banana flavor, right?
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: And so this one I feel is almost more banana-y.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: I I agree with you, Phil.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: I when you when you swirl it around, you give it like a a nice big whiff, like you do get some citrus notes in there, but it doesn't come through on the taste, which is interesting to me.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: So it's really weird.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I so I just had the last taste of of this can in front of me, right?
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: And at the very, very end, very back of my palate, I taste citrus.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Last drink.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: And I don't know.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: You win.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't like I almost don't trust it, right?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Like I've had a glass at this point, I'm like, I didn't really taste it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: But right there at the end, I'm like, oh, there it is.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: And that's the only one I got.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think you might be right.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: I I do get the the peppery cloveness.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: It's like it's like slightly banana y, then the peppery, and then you're right, tail in right before you lose the flavor.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Yes, like citrus.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: Interesting.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Lead oranges are supposed to be generally sweeter and less acidic than like a regular orange.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So it's a little bit more mellow and smooth than the citrusy bite that orange would give it.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Makes sense probably why we can smell it, but you don't necessarily like it doesn't hit you.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that taste doesn't hit you.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: It's just kind of interesting because I've had some like other blood orange beers that that definitely lean into like being citrus forward.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: But but some of those weren't Hefeweizens either.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: So I think that might be part of this is like the the the subtle blood orange flavor competing with that that yeastiness that's giving that banana clovey style peppery palate taste.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: So I don't know, it's just very interesting.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Ross, you picked this one up for us.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Why why did you pick up this can for our last time?
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Excuse me.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: As you talk about.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: That's my first time drinking.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: Um well, you're doing very well.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: I appreciate that.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Um so honestly we should be encouraged, honestly, by your form.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: I'm downing beers.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: I appreciate that.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: You should start a podcast.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: Oh gosh.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: You know, if I ever had time.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: I think you might really grow into it.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: You the podcast and the beer drinking.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: The beer drinking.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: You've shown a natural talent.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: I think I have the right figure for it.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: For that being here.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: I don't have the right figure for many things, but beer drinking may be one.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: Um okay, why did I pick this up?
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: I I think primarily because of the can.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: So it's like I I was recently out in Colorado.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: If you've noticed this season, we've had quite a few Colorado beers.
- 7:24SPEAKER_04: Um so when we had stopped, you know, you're just you look at it, it's kind of like picking a wine, right?
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: When you go down that aisle where there's like just shelves and shelves of wine, you start looking at labels and what has the cool wine label, right?
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: These are all cabernets, and which one looks the coolest, right?
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: So it's like when I'm looking at at shelves of beer, I start looking at labels, and this one like I was drawn to because it felt like DD to me.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: So it's like the Grim Brothers, like that name, just cool, like the fairy tales, and then the Griffin being mythical creature.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: I I loved it, the whole thing.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Did you talk about the little story on the can?
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: So that was the other thing, and I actually didn't know this until after I had got the beer.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: Um, but this can goes a long way, a lot further than most beers, um, where they talk about the style that it's a bavarian fi bavarian style Hefeweizen.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: Um, they talk about the characters in this beer, like the hops being Magnum and Hurskbrucher.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Is that the correct pronunciation?
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: How would you pronounce it?
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Hersbrucker.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: That is what Hersbrucker, Hirschbrucher, we're going with whatever.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then the malt being Pilsner, Vienna, and White Wheat.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: But the coolest part was at the bottom when it had like this little story.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I'll read you this first paragraph because it's what's on the can.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: It says, Once upon a time, many years later, the king had a problem for actually a brokenhearted teenage daughter, a lazy and chubby adolescent son, a sad and frustrated wife, and a tree that wouldn't die.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: And then there's a QR code that leads to a story on their website that is like three more pages long.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: And I just love the fact that you know you're already picked it up because it feels DD.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: And then here's this lovely story that somebody made up, and it's it's it's great.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: It's like this is perfect for me.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So that is one place you can find this beer.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna switch into where we think you could find this beer in Fey Rune.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: So going across the Sword Coast, where would you be finding this one?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Damon, do you have somewhere for us?
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: I got some, but I got I got a place.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: You okay over there?
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Would you like me to share it?
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Damon's place.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, where are we going?
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: We're going to Musty Misties.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Uh for a taste of Sunrise Delayed is the name of it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: Okay, I like that.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like you want you want it to get better.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: I was thinking we're like we're waiting for the blood orange to rise, you know, like that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Ross, where are you headed?
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, we are headed to the Gilded Goblet, uh, which is in the heart of Waterdeep.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, this place is known for its exquisite and macabre drink selection.
- 10:14unknown: Okay.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: I was gonna say some of the new words.
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: Good words.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: Their macabre drink selection because this one may have actual blood in it, and it is called the Blood Moon Mead.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe goblin.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I feel like we have might have some like rabies issues here.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: It's Fey Rune.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: There are way worse things happening.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Let's be real.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: Faye Pos.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: You don't want to get rabies.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Where's the health inspector?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Good question.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Hey, there's a character idea.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: You are the health inspector of Feyrune.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, you guys just wait.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Can we have a club?
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: What class would that be?
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Cleric.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, totally.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Or paladin.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Or paladin's spiding people.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: You will clean up your act.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gotta be pure.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: All right, Phil, where are you taking this?
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Well, if you would like to find this elusive beer, you're gonna have to track down Burke.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Because Burke brews this in his cave and he only serves it to his friends and family who begrudgingly drink it and tell him that he does a good job of homing.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: And he likes to call this troll tracks.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I am gonna go uh kind of based off of the story that was on the can.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm gonna change it a little bit.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So you are gonna find this, or you're not gonna find this actually.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: You're gonna stumble across it in the woods.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Uh if you venture off of the well-traveled roads, you might stumble across uh Glinda's little witch hut off deep in the woods.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: And Glinda is kind of a judgmental little witch.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: Oh wow.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: And she had another traveler come through that sampled some of their beers that they had along with them, uh, and they were terrible.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And so she made up her own just to prove them wrong.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: And so it is uh Glinda's specialty beer known as it's better than Willie's.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna say it's called Karen.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: That's also what she said.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's better than Willie's.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: So bonus crack.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, we got a bonus crack.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, so where on the challenge rating are we gonna put this one?
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: So we're going from challenge rating one all the way up to challenge rating 20 or beyond.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and so the challenge rating one is like a cream ale, really easy to drink.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Welcome to beer.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Uh challenge rating 20, kind of the opposite end, a double IPA, a beer drinker's beer.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: You gotta have kind of some experience in the game to drink it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Where are we placing this one?
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: I think that I went first, so I'll go first again.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: I think that there is.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Did I go first before?
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're fine.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: Take it, Damon.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Take it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: I'm taking it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Hey, there's the coupe shake.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna take it all.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Dungeon Dog! Dungeon dog is saying hello.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Puppy puppy.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: I think that there is a reason why half of his ans are not the most popular beer style around.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Um they're they can they're just I don't know, they're less approachable.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like if you don't know what you're getting into, they they just they taste kind of stale in some ways, I I find.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Um so but at the same time that I don't find it overly challenging uh to drink, so I'm gonna go with an eleven.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's fair.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: I was actually leaning higher, I think, myself.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Um mainly I feel like you have to you almost have to like this style of beer to drink it.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: I feel like if you don't necessarily love that kind of yeasty flavor that lives in half a weizen, this might turn you off.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: So I was thinking initially I was thinking like an 18, but Damon's 11 makes me think I was too high, so we'll drop that to a 15.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: But I would say if you don't like a yeasty flavor in a beer, you're probably not gonna like this.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Um personally, I'd probably put it at a twelve myself.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: It's not my favorite style of beer either.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: I would drink it, but it's not something that I gravitate towards.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: But this would be like an Oktoberfest style beer for me.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: I would drink it seasonally because it's appropriate.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sure.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: Ross, where are you putting it?
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: I uh gosh, I'm very torn on this one.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: I I think the thing for me is blood orange is gonna pull a lot of people in because they're gonna think, oh, a citrusy flavored beer, and it's gonna be easy to drink and it's gonna be bright and fresh.
- 15:05SPEAKER_04: And they're gonna get this one and they're not it's not a super forward-tasting citrus.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: The the the yeast gives you those banana flavors, which is not what you're expecting at all, plus the fact that it's it it is a little bitter.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: It's not like I agree.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: It it's not off-putting in any way, uh, which makes me think this is probably like a 17 to me.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'll put mine back at an 18.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh, I'm gonna go 14, kind of along the same lines.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: This is you kind of gotta be ready for it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, I will say though, switching up to saying yay or nay, would you drink this one again?
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: At first I was kind of like, eh, maybe not, but I think I would under the right circumstances.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Like if we're gonna be playing DD, this is a good beer for playing DD because it's like one that you can let sit for a little while.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: It's not like you want to finish it kind of quickly.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: This is a zipper.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: I agree with that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: Yay or an A, Ross?
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, I would say yay.
- 16:15SPEAKER_04: I I I I do like it.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: It's I wish it had more citrus flavor.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: At the end of the day, that's what I really want out of that beer, and I'm not getting, but it's good enough that I would definitely have another can of it.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: You need that orange slice that I have to do.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: And so that's that maybe is what's missing here is we don't have an orange slice in this, so yeah.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Uh this is a nay for me.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't need to have another another one of these.

- 17:12SPEAKER_00: No, not really.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Not at all.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: But I thought it'd be very smart ass-ish of me.
