• 1:24
Speaker 1: Thank you for very much for joining us today.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: Okay, uh, let's see.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: Us News announces the 2024 best cars for Families.
• 1:34
Speaker 1: Before we get to that, let's go over the criteria for your report and what you kind of went by to judge these cars.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: So for best cars for Families, we look at not only a car's overall scores in our rankings and reviews system, but we also look at things like cargo space technology that's, family-friendly team driver systems that can let you monitor your team driver behind the wheel, even things like a hand-free liftgate that you know make things easier for families.
• 2:10
Speaker 4: So we look at that kind of stuff.
• 2:12
  Speaker 4: It's all data-driven.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: We don't just throw darts at a dartboard and pick out the best cars for Families.
• 2:17
Speaker 4: We actually look at what the data tells us.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Now are all of these 2024 models.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: These are all 2024 models.
• 2:24
  Speaker 1: Very nice, Okay.
• 2:25
Speaker 1: How long did it take you guys to compile this?
• 2:29
Speaker 4: I worked with a bunch of really smart researchers and a few months to put all this stuff together.
• 2:35
  Speaker 1: A few months.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, so I understand that you evaluated 90 vehicles.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that's a lot.
• 2:42
Speaker 1: I would be like, at the end of the day, I'm going my God, I don't know what to deliver turn here.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: I can only imagine what you went through.
• 2:55
Speaker 4: They work very hard at this to get it.
• 2:58
  Speaker 1: Okay, so let's.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: How do you want to start?
• 3:01
Speaker 1: You want to start with brands or vehicles.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Specifically, how do you want to work this?
• 3:06
Speaker 4: Let's just work our way down the list.
• 3:08
Speaker 4: Let's start with the best two-row mid-size SUVs for families, all right, and that's the Honda Passport.
• 3:14
  Speaker 1: The Honda Passport.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: Is that a minivan?
• 3:20
Speaker 4: No, the Honda Passport is essentially a two-row version of the Honda Pilot.
• 3:24
  Speaker 4: It's slightly lifted.
• 3:26
Speaker 4: You know, the the Passport's just a vehicle that might not stand out in any one area but does everything well.
• 3:35
Speaker 1: Well, honda's usually do, don't you agree?
• 3:38
Speaker 2: Exactly Kind of bulletproof.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they're kind of pricey.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: Well, I say pricey, they're usually priced over and above their competitors by $2,000, $3,000.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: You agree A little bit, yeah.
• 3:52
  Speaker 4: They're.
• 3:53
Speaker 4: They're a little bit of a premium mark out there.
• 3:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, let's see, so let's do the best.
• 3:59
Speaker 4: Three-row mid-size SUV for families, and that's the Kia Telluride.
• 4:04
Speaker 4: You know, the Kia Telluride wins a lot of awards and it wins them because it's that good, it does everything.
• 4:12
Speaker 4: Well, it's in its kind of 1.5, version, 1.5 generation.
• 4:18
Speaker 4: They just refreshed it and they made a great SUV even better.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: Before we move on, I didn't want to mention that.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: I see here that you also have hybrids, you also have electrics, you've got full-size SUVs, body on frame style, and you also got some cars here.
• 4:40
Speaker 1: Okay, so let me just continue on Best compact SUV for families and that's a very crowded segment that has a lot of great vehicles in it, and for this award, we picked the 2020 400 Tucson.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: And you know, let me just interject this To me, a compact is really.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: It's really not a compact the way I think of a compact.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: I know that I'm old, but back in the day a compact car was the smallest car the manufacturer made.
• 5:10
Speaker 1: It's not the case anymore.
• 5:14
Speaker 4: That's across the board.
• 5:15
Speaker 4: I mean, try and put a compact Chevy Colorado pickup truck in your garage.
• 5:19
Speaker 4: It's not compact anymore.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly so the Hyundai Tucson.
• 5:24
Speaker 1: So Hyundai and Kia, they're right up there at the top, number two and number three.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: That's basically the same company, just different brands, correct?
• 5:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, I kind of like to think of Kia as the Pontiac and Hyundai as the Buick.
• 5:42
  Speaker 1: Interesting.
• 5:42
  Speaker 1: That's an interesting.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, I get you All right.
• 5:45
Speaker 1: Best hybrid car for families, and this is no surprise Camry hybrid, the Camry hybrid.
• 5:54
Speaker 4: In its last year of the current generation, it still was able to win.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: Well, that doesn't surprise me, because you know they're hybrid.
• 6:02
Speaker 1: They have been working on a hybrid system since the beginning of the Prius, and that dates back to what?
• 6:09
  Speaker 1: 2010?
• 6:12
  Speaker 1: , oh, 2000.
• 6:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, about 2000, I think is somewhere in there when they started the Prius, and it's basically the same type of system that they use today.
• 6:26
  Speaker 4: At its heart.
• 6:26
Speaker 4: It's the same type of system.
• 6:28
Speaker 4: I mean, it's been changed dramatically.
• 6:30
Speaker 4: Well, of course, the new Prius is an amazing car compared to the original Prius, but the Camry, you know, uses that drivetrain and gives you 40 plus MPG out of a sedan, which is fantastic, A nice sedan.
• 6:46
Speaker 3: Yeah it is A nice sedan.
• 6:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, that Camry has come a long way, like the hybrid system, no doubt about it.
• 6:51
Speaker 1: Okay, best hybrid SUV for families and this really draws my attention because this is a recently updated or brand new Highlander- Yep, that's the Highlander hybrid, the car behind me on the screen here.
• 7:09
Speaker 4: It kind of defines what a three row SUV is and it gives you fantastic mileage.
• 7:14
Speaker 4: I mean, you look at the Telluride, Telluride's great, but its one weakness is fuel economy, and Toyota fixes that with the Highlander hybrid, which you need to save money for those theme park admissions and the Highlander hybrid will let you do that.
• 7:31
Speaker 1: What's your favorite theme park?
• 7:33
  Speaker 1: Disney World?
• 7:35
  Speaker 3: Is it?
• 7:37
Speaker 1: I would say I'd agree with you Best electric vehicle for families.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: Now, does this include both cars and SUVs in the category?
• 7:51
  Speaker 1: This one does?
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Okay, so this is, across the board, best electric vehicle for families, and that is.
• 7:58
Speaker 4: Yes, that is the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
• 8:01
Speaker 4: Another Hyundai, another Hyundai.
• 8:04
Speaker 4: So Hyundai and Kia.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: They do something interesting in the way that they design their electric cars.
• 8:10
Speaker 4: A lot of electric vehicles like the Ford F-150 Lightning have a huge front trunk.
• 8:16
Speaker 4: With the Hyundai and Kia's, instead of doing that, they put their drive electronics up front, where the engine would be, and use that extra space for a larger cabin.
• 8:28
Speaker 4: So the Ioniq 5 has a huge cabin.
• 8:33
Speaker 4: You know it's an electric, so there's no drive line hump.
• 8:37
Speaker 4: So even the middle seat in the second row is usable for normal people.
• 8:42
Speaker 4: They package it right for families.
• 8:47
Speaker 1: Is it an SUV or is it a car?
• 8:52
Speaker 4: It's called an SUV, but it's a car.
• 8:57
Speaker 1: Well, that's why I asked you, because I've seen them and I think that I've had one in the press fleet and it's kind of like a tweener, it's not one, it kind of crosses the lines, and I think that there's a value for that.
• 9:11
Speaker 1: Okay, let's talk about the best large SUV.
• 9:14
Speaker 1: Now this is body on frame, I assume.
• 9:17
Speaker 4: This is the big guy.
• 9:18
Speaker 4: This is Chevy Suburban.
• 9:20
Speaker 4: Wow yeah, longest running continuous nameplate in the US, I believe at this point Wow.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: And it has no resemblance to Suburbans of the past.
• 9:30
Speaker 1: No, not at all yeah.
• 9:31
Speaker 1: Every time that they come out with a new version of it and you go really, this is a Suburban.
• 9:39
Speaker 1: I mean, it's almost like a Cadillacs of old now.
• 9:43
Speaker 4: Especially at the top end of their lineup, the end of the high country Suburban, and it's a, it's lux.
• 9:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's pushing $100,000 or more.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: That is true, yeah.
• 9:54
Speaker 4: But there you know, there's a reason why it's nicknamed the Chevy Subdivision.
• 9:59
Speaker 2: Oh, I never heard that before it's the biggest family you have in here.
• 10:02
Speaker 1: Oh, that's beautiful Full three row family sub.
• 10:05
Speaker 1: I'm so glad that they have finally perfected that third row where you don't have to actually take the third row out of the vehicle to open up the cargo space, and you know exactly what I'm talking about.
• 10:18
Speaker 4: And you also don't need to be a gymnast to get to that third row.
• 10:21
Speaker 2: That's why don't they turn the seat around?
• 10:23
  Speaker 1: Yeah, that's.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: The only thing we're lacking is an option to turn the seat around.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: Turn the seat around and you don't have that problem.
• 10:30
  Speaker 4: Yeah, he's laughing.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: I don't think any any parent wants that again.
• 10:34
Speaker 4: No, I guess not.
• 10:35
  Speaker 4: Come on.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, especially now with the, with all the shootings and everything, they can't have the kids in the back seat flipping off the car that's behind them, you know.
• 10:45
Speaker 1: All right, so let's talk about best mid-sized car for families.
• 10:49
Speaker 1: And again, mid-size is?
• 10:52
Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of confusing because to me, a mid-size today is a full-size car.
• 10:59
Speaker 4: Right, and that is the 2024 Toyota Camry.
• 11:01
Speaker 4: Again, it's last year of its current product cycle.
• 11:05
Speaker 4: Still a great car.
• 11:07
Speaker 1: So it's won two awards it's best, the best hybrid and the straight I assume gasoline engine.
• 11:15
Speaker 2: Why wouldn't the Lexus ESP be ahead of that?
• 11:19
Speaker 4: Because we'd have to include luxury cars in the, in our best cars In the van All right.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the van list.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: I got your family here, all right.
• 11:26
Speaker 1: So let's talk about best many van for families, and I you know is I want to say there aren't as many mini vans as there once was, but there is competition still out there.
• 11:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, there aren't as many mini vans, but there are.
• 11:43
Speaker 4: You know the competition is still strong because you know it's hard to beat a mini van.
• 11:49
Speaker 4: Once you've had a mini van you don't want to go to anything else.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: You know it's somebody somebody asked me, don, why?
• 11:55
Speaker 1: What is it about you and the mini van?
• 11:57
Speaker 1: I like them too.
• 11:58
Speaker 1: Would I buy one personally?
• 12:00
Speaker 1: Probably not now with the advent and the proliferation of SUVs everywhere, but as far as vehicle dynamics, how it drives, how it rides and all of the things that it's capable of doing, it's it's a big box on wheels that has luxury throughout, and I would have to say that it would probably be as far as an actual transportation mode for my family, it would have to be a mini van.
• 12:33
Speaker 2: I'm thinking the Toyota probably, but I want to go with the Toyota over the Pacifica.
• 12:37
  Speaker 2: My opinion yeah.
• 12:38
Speaker 4: The Pacifica one, the Toyota.
• 12:41
Speaker 4: It gets up there in price and that's that's one issue with it.
• 12:45
Speaker 4: Well, it does have some great features.
• 12:47
Speaker 4: I mean all wheel drive, hybrid powertrain, so great mileage.
• 12:51
Speaker 4: But when looking at the overall numbers, the Pacifica wins and the Pacifica has some features that nobody else has.
• 12:57
Speaker 1: You know, it's funny.
• 12:58
Speaker 1: You should say that, because the first thing, the first thing that comes to my mind, is the the stow and go system, because if you, if you want to use the seats, great, and then that little cubby that's underneath the floor works great for luggage, everything that you could possibly throw underneath there and still keep it inside the vehicle and go for weeks on a vacation and still have plenty of room for family and all of the luggage and stuff that's in it.
• 13:29
Speaker 4: Yep, and if you look at a lot of the newer minivans, you can't remove the center row at all and the Chrysler makes it easy.
• 13:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's put it into the floor.
• 13:38
Speaker 1: I think that it's the ultimate.
• 13:39
Speaker 1: Uh, I don't know about reliability.
• 13:41
Speaker 1: Um, I would assume that now that it's getting a little bit long in the tooth, although it's still very attractive vehicle, I would imagine that, uh, now that they've worked out all of the bugs that they had originally, because, let's face it, it has a lot of technology in it and it's got all all the plugs, you know, the cell phone stuff, the, the, the screens for the kids in the back seat to play their video game, whatever, whatever you want, that's in that van.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: Well, the, the Chrysler minivan years ago, was a leader in that group to begin with, and it started and it's got a vacuum cleaner in it and it's got a vacuum.
• 14:16
Speaker 3: You gotta have that.
• 14:17
  Speaker 4: And the uh.
• 14:18
Speaker 4: The entertainment screens in back are linked to the navigation system so the kids can see how, how long it is to get there.
• 14:24
Speaker 3: They can follow along.
• 14:25
Speaker 2: Keep asking, yeah, stop.
• 14:27
Speaker 1: Are we there yet?
• 14:28
  Speaker 2: Well, Don's a new grandfather.
• 14:29
Speaker 2: He should get a minivan to take his grandson around.
• 14:32
Speaker 1: Well, he's only one, so I've got a few years on, the leash and I'll get one at the meekum auction, I'm sure there you go yeah.
• 14:38
Speaker 1: Well, uh, john, how fun Uh this is a.
• 14:42
Speaker 1: This is great fun uh for everybody to uh look at see all of the the award winners at us news and um hey.
• 14:51
  Speaker 3: John, I have a question.
• 14:53
Speaker 3: Yep, you said that was a Highlander behind you.
• 14:56
Speaker 3: Yep, is it 25?
• 14:58
  Speaker 3: 24.
• 14:59
  Speaker 3: ?
• 14:59
  Speaker 3: That's a 24.
• 15:00
Speaker 3: Yep, I liked the way that looks.
• 15:02
Speaker 3: I keep looking at it over your shoulder there and it just doesn't look like any of the Highlanders I've seen.
• 15:07
Speaker 1: Well, you're not getting one, so you just sit.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: Still no, but uh, sooner or later I'm going to have to buy the wife something.
• 15:13
Speaker 3: There you go Well there you have it.
• 15:15
Speaker 4: Well, I'm a minivan owner and I love my minivan.
• 15:18
Speaker 4: There you go, I'm with you, buddy.
• 15:19
Speaker 3: When I had one, we were doing a lot of freelance work and it was great to put the photo gear in the back.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: You lift up the back of it.
• 15:25
Speaker 3: The girlfriend or wife could sit under there in the shade while I was out there shooting pictures of her husbands, and my wife would keep her entertained.
• 15:33
Speaker 3: It was perfect Her husband's and his wife, yeah, or his girlfriend, whoever you happen to have at the show.
• 15:39
  Speaker 1: And his girlfriend.
• 15:39
Speaker 1: My God, you know it's turning a little sick here now, john, so we appreciate you Let you go buddy, yeah, hey thanks so much for joining us.
