Transcript
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hey, everyone. Emily Abadi here.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You are listening to another episode of 5-Minute Friday from Hurdle,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and I am coming to you live from Sydney, Australia. What?
- 0:28Speaker 1: What?
- 0:29Speaker 2: What a wild sentence that is. I.
- 0:35Speaker 2: This makes me think of when I went to Japan
- 0:38Speaker 2: for the first time for context. It's not that I
- 0:40Speaker 2: never wanted to go to Japan.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It just wasn't on the top of my list.
- 0:44Speaker 2: But when I got there, I was absolutely blown away
- 0:48Speaker 2: and couldn't wait to get back and spend more time.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And I feel as though I may end up feeling
- 0:55Speaker 2: that way about Australia. The thing is, and I've been
- 0:59Speaker 2: here for, I don't know, 36 hours now. The thing is,
- 1:03Speaker 2: is that there's so much... to see.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It is huge. I have gone nowhere yet, basically.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Aside from some of the local streets to Sydney, I'm
- 1:13Speaker 2: staying near where the Sydney Marathon finish line is at
- 1:17Speaker 2: the Opera House. And also, I went to Manly Beach
- 1:21Speaker 2: earlier today. But there's just so much I want to see.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So I am really happy that I'm going to be
- 1:27Speaker 2: spending a good chunk of time here over the next month.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Let me tell you... about the travel. The travel was wild.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So as many of you know, travel from New York
- 1:38Speaker 2: to Sydney, Australia is basically about a 24-hour commitment. I
- 1:42Speaker 2: boarded my first flight at JFK, which was at 5.30pm
- 1:48Speaker 2: on Monday evening. I landed at LAX around 8 something,
- 1:53Speaker 2: maybe 8.15pm. And my next flight, my connection was at
- 1:56Speaker 2: 11pm out of LAX to Sydney. Sydney and that flight
- 2:04Speaker 2: was just shy of 14 hours. Now, I got to
- 2:08Speaker 2: go to the Delta One Lounge at LAX.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Mind blown.
- 2:14Speaker 2: There was a sushi bar and it was absolutely exquisite.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And so it was great because I got to eat
- 2:23Speaker 2: dinner at LAX. I boarded the flight and I tell you,
- 2:26Speaker 2: I was sleeping within, gosh, 15 minutes maybe.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I passed out in.
- 2:33Speaker 2: basically two different blocks, one for about four and a
- 2:36Speaker 2: half hours, and then again for two hours, and then
- 2:38Speaker 2: one more time for an hour. So to get seven
- 2:43Speaker 2: plus eight almost hours of sleep, I don't think that
- 2:46Speaker 2: math maths, but on the flight was, I was very
- 2:50Speaker 2: satisfied with that. But let me tell you what happened
- 2:53Speaker 2: when I got into my room. So we got to
- 2:56Speaker 2: the hotel at around eight a.m.
- 3:00Speaker 1: In the morning.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Room wasn't ready yet, so went to Bill's for pancakes.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Can't recommend enough. And then got a manicure, which was
- 3:07Speaker 2: on the to-do list. Got back to the hotel. Room
- 3:10Speaker 2: was ready. Showered and went to take a nap for
- 3:13Speaker 2: 90 minutes.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Nope.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Woke up five hours later. Woke up five hours later.
- 3:22Speaker 2: which was not the goal. I had an alarm set
- 3:26Speaker 2: and had dinner plans. And basically my phone was connected
- 3:31Speaker 2: to a pair of headphones that were in my tote bag.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And so the alarm went off and it played in
- 3:38Speaker 2: my headphones and I never heard it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I digress.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I woke up, I was so frazzled and so worried
- 3:44Speaker 2: because I was just so scared that I really messed
- 3:47Speaker 2: with my sleep situation, trying to navigate the not have
- 3:53Speaker 2: the headache of the jet lag. And lucky for me,
- 3:57Speaker 2: I was awake for two hours. I really had to
- 3:58Speaker 2: do some breathing exercises to let go of the thing
- 4:01Speaker 2: that I could no longer change.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And then grabbed.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Dinner, came back, was sleeping by 9.30, slept until about
- 4:07Speaker 2: 3 a.m., was up for about an hour and a half,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and then got another hour and a half of sleep.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So all things considered, the fact that my aura ring
- 4:14Speaker 2: is telling me right now that I don't have any
- 4:16Speaker 2: sleep debt is absolutely wild.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Absolutely wild. I'm so excited to be here.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I'm feeling both excited and a bit anxious over the
- 4:27Speaker 2: race on Sunday. This is going to be my 16th
- 4:31Speaker 2: marathon and that within itself is the craziest sentence. I
- 4:37Speaker 2: almost miss the days where marathoning felt less complicated.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I miss the.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Almost level of innocence that I had at my first marathon.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I still feel the same butterflies and nervousness getting to
- 4:53Speaker 2: that start line that I did back in, I believe
- 4:55Speaker 2: it was 2013. But now I know so much and
- 5:00Speaker 2: I feel as though I know enough that.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Everything should go right. And that's relatable, right? It's like I...
- 5:08Speaker 1: have the answers.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And I know the important things like that I need
- 5:15Speaker 2: to consume a certain amount of carbs in the days
- 5:17Speaker 2: leading up to the race.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And I need to eat a certain amount on the
- 5:20Speaker 1: race course.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And I need to wear clothes that I've worn before.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And I need to just go to bed early and hydrate.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I know everything. I could list through them here for
- 5:31Speaker 1: you right now.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And that doesn't mean that things aren't going to be
- 5:36Speaker 2: happening that I have not planned for. I'm not saying
- 5:42Speaker 2: this appropriately. There are going to still be things that
- 5:45Speaker 2: I cannot change. There are still going to be things
- 5:47Speaker 2: that come up that maybe aren't ideal. And it becomes
- 5:50Speaker 2: up to me to then navigate those things in real time.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And that's the relatable thing.
- 5:55Speaker 2: The relatable thing is, how can I do the best
- 5:57Speaker 2: I can with what I have, knowing what I know?
- 6:01Speaker 2: So similarly to the other day, when I woke up
- 6:03Speaker 2: after that five-hour nap and that wasn't what I wanted,
- 6:05Speaker 2: it was like, well.
- 6:07Speaker 1: this is how it is now.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And the only thing that I can do, the best
- 6:12Speaker 2: thing that I can do in my best interest is
- 6:15Speaker 2: accept this circumstance and move forward in the best way possible.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And so yeah, I was a little bit cranky after
- 6:22Speaker 1: that nap.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And yeah, I would be a little bit cranky if
- 6:24Speaker 2: something goes awry on Sunday, come restay. But all I
- 6:29Speaker 2: can do is the best I can with what I have.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And so yeah, I.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Miss the days where I didn't know so much. But
- 6:37Speaker 2: I am very thankful for the mindset that I have now.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I'm thankful for the work that I've done that empowers
- 6:43Speaker 2: and enables me to get to this place where I
- 6:45Speaker 2: can respond instead of react in real time.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I can make informed decisions.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And so the next time I check in for 5-Minute Friday,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I will have... I'll be coming to you from Fiji,
- 7:00Speaker 2: which is wild.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And I will have run my 16th marathon. And that
- 7:04Speaker 1: is pretty special.
- 7:07Speaker 2: With that, my question for you this week, I want
- 7:11Speaker 2: to know what you're excited about, okay?
- 7:14Speaker 1: Can you tell me?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Can you message me on Instagram? Can you comment in
- 7:17Speaker 2: the YouTube comments? Can you send me a DM, like
- 7:21Speaker 2: email hello at hurdle.us? What are you excited about right now?
- 7:25Speaker 2: How can I rally behind you? And now let's get
- 7:29Speaker 2: to this week's listener question. Hey, Emily, I'm looking to
- 7:34Speaker 2: find a good run coach in my area of Las Vegas,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and I'm not really sure what to look for in
- 7:39Speaker 2: a coach. I know that you are a certified run
- 7:42Speaker 2: coach and would love to hear your thoughts on the
- 7:43Speaker 2: best ways to find and vet a coach.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Thanks for all you do. Anthony. Hey, Anthony. A rare
- 7:50Speaker 1: male hurdler listener question. I appreciate you.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Run coaches, a great run coach is a diamond in
- 7:57Speaker 2: that someone that you feel comfortable with talking to, someone
- 8:01Speaker 2: that you really trust with not only putting things together
- 8:06Speaker 2: for you in a responsible way, but your heart. For
- 8:10Speaker 2: so many of us, running is something that we really
- 8:13Speaker 2: invest a lot of time in. So you want to
- 8:15Speaker 2: make sure that you're working with someone that understands that investment. Now,
- 8:19Speaker 2: when it comes to choosing a run coach, the most
- 8:22Speaker 2: important thing is that you are working with someone that
- 8:26Speaker 2: has a relevant certification. Now, there are tons of Instagram
- 8:29Speaker 2: coaches out there, tons of people that are.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Sharing their knowledge with the world on that platform.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Now, the thing is, is that oftentimes we need to
- 8:37Speaker 2: take that knowledge with a grain of salt. And so
- 8:39Speaker 2: you need to know where they garnered their education from.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You want to put your training in someone responsible's hands.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Just because someone.
- 8:49Speaker 2: has run a dozen marathons doesn't mean they know the
- 8:54Speaker 2: why behind the work. So there are a slew of
- 8:59Speaker 2: different certification courses and programs that you can get a
- 9:02Speaker 2: run coach certification through. The one that mine is through
- 9:07Speaker 2: is UESCA, which is the United Endurance Sports Coaching Association.
- 9:13Speaker 1: There is the Roadrunners Club of America, RRCA.
- 9:16Speaker 2: There's USATF, USA Track and Field. There's ISSA, I-S-S-A, Run Coaching.
- 9:24Speaker 2: So many options, so many abbreviations. You just want to
- 9:27Speaker 2: make sure that when someone has letters next to their
- 9:30Speaker 2: name or they're telling you what acronym they got their
- 9:34Speaker 2: certification through, that it is one that is vetted and
- 9:40Speaker 2: approved and reliable.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 2: The other thing that I really want to say is, again,
- 9:46Speaker 2: that comfortability is everything. So just like you may talk
- 9:51Speaker 2: to a few therapists to find the right therapist, you
- 9:54Speaker 2: might chat with and vet a few run coaches to
- 9:58Speaker 2: find the right run coach. Again, so much opportunity cost
- 10:02Speaker 2: involved in the work that you put in on the run.
- 10:06Speaker 2: You are working to become a better you. And I'm
- 10:08Speaker 2: not just talking about pacing here. I'm talking about your heart.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm talking about your mind. And so you want to
- 10:15Speaker 2: work with someone that makes you feel seen.
- 10:17Speaker 1: The....
- 10:20Speaker 2: Last thing I will say on this is finding them
- 10:23Speaker 2: could be as easy as going on Instagram and searching
- 10:26Speaker 2: for running coaches and then looking into relevant certifications once
- 10:30Speaker 2: information comes up. Also, going onto Google and simply searching
- 10:35Speaker 2: run coach New York City or run coach Boston or
- 10:37Speaker 2: run coach San Diego or wherever you might be, you'll
- 10:41Speaker 2: be pretty impressed with the different search results that come up.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But again, in that search.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Always check to see where their certifications are coming from.
- 10:52Speaker 2: You could not be more careful with your body. It
- 10:55Speaker 2: is so important. So please, please, please look into where
- 11:00Speaker 2: their knowledge comes from.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I hope that helps.
- 11:03Speaker 2: If you need any more tips, if there's anything else
- 11:05Speaker 2: I can answer for you, you can always DM me
- 11:07Speaker 2: over at Hurdle Podcast over at Emily Abadi. And of course,
- 11:10Speaker 2: email us. Again, that email is hello at hurdle.us. I
- 11:15Speaker 2: want to hear your listener questions. So send them in.
- 11:18Speaker 2: And if you're watching this on YouTube, comment and like below.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
