Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to a special edition of Inside the Tape
- 0:12Speaker 1: with Greg Cosell. I'm Jeff Mosher alongside Adam Kaplan, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: of course to break down tape is Greg Cosell. Now,
- 0:19Speaker 1: it's usually we do a pregame show, but obviously the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Eagles are on the by, so we bring in Greg
- 0:25Speaker 1: because the Eagles made a big move to bring in
- 0:28Speaker 1: a defensive back, Michael Carter the Second from the Jets
- 0:31Speaker 1: in a trade, and we've covered it on a lot
- 0:34Speaker 1: of angles, but we haven't gotten yet Greg a tape
- 0:37Speaker 1: breakdown of Michael Carter the Second's skills. So let's take
- 0:42Speaker 1: it away. What do you see Michael Carter the Second from.
- 0:44Speaker 2: The It's funny. I went back and I looked at
- 0:47Speaker 2: my evaluation. He came out in the twenty twenty one draft, yes,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and I liked him. You know, I knew that he
- 0:54Speaker 2: would be a slot corner in the league due to
- 0:56Speaker 2: his size five nine four ran really well. You know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: I thought he played uh man coverage really well in college.
- 1:09Speaker 2: He's got he had a really strong athletic profile, speed twitch.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I said he transitions as a as a slot corner.
- 1:17Speaker 2: He did play outside in college, but he hasn't in
- 1:20Speaker 2: the NFL. But it's interesting. I I in the NFL.
- 1:24Speaker 2: What really stands out, because I've liked him in the
- 1:26Speaker 2: league too, is he's become a really, really good zone corner.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And I would say that that's probably become his strength.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And it wouldn't surprise me if the Eagles made that move,
- 1:37Speaker 2: because that's what he is. He's a zone corner. Now,
- 1:40Speaker 2: keep one thing in mind, Joe Casper, who's the safety's
- 1:43Speaker 2: coach for the Eagles. Yeah, he coached him at Duke.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Oh, that's right, that's right. I forgot about that.
- 1:51Speaker 2: He obviously knows him well, Douglas. But yeah, well yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: So you know, it raises question clearly because right now
- 2:03Speaker 2: everybody knows this is not a profound statement. Guys, everybody
- 2:06Speaker 2: knows that they don't know what Bennett is at corner.
- 2:09Speaker 2: They do know what Jackson and Ringo are, and they're
- 2:11Speaker 2: not good enough to be NFL starters at this point.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So will they give Bennett a shot? Possibly? Is he off?
- 2:19Speaker 2: I r not yet, He's still in the practice for
- 2:23Speaker 2: the buye right, Okay, so let's assume they give him
- 2:26Speaker 2: a shot. But the interesting fact is is Carter is
- 2:30Speaker 2: purely a slot, but he's a very good one and
- 2:33Speaker 2: he's his own corner. I can tell you one reason
- 2:37Speaker 2: that they're playing a lot more man this year momentarily
- 2:39Speaker 2: and while they're playing a lot more single high this year.
- 2:42Speaker 2: But but it'll be interesting to see because Carter is
- 2:46Speaker 2: a good player if he becomes a slot corner and
- 2:48Speaker 2: they feel the need to play Degene outside more because
- 2:52Speaker 2: Dejeene's is a good football player. Now, he may not
- 2:54Speaker 2: be the best outside corner in the league, you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: he's not that guy, but more than likely he be
- 3:00Speaker 2: better than what they're putting out there now.
- 3:03Speaker 3: It seemed Greg that, you know, you have the scheme change,
- 3:05Speaker 3: coaching change with the Jets this year and it just
- 3:07Speaker 3: didn't fit because that they draft traded for Jarvis Brownlee
- 3:11Speaker 3: and Carter's before he had his concussion, his snaps were cut.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, because they want to play because Aaron Glenn wants
- 3:16Speaker 2: to play more man and out more of his own corner,
- 3:19Speaker 2: because the Eagles ultimately want to play more zone. Now
- 3:23Speaker 2: think of it this way, and this it all starts
- 3:28Speaker 2: really up front. You know, we've talked numerous times while
- 3:31Speaker 2: they're playing a lot of cover one this year. Yes,
- 3:34Speaker 2: you got to think of it this way, and I
- 3:35Speaker 2: thought about this, you know, quite a bit. And you
- 3:39Speaker 2: have to remember that Milton Williams is gone. Milton Williams
- 3:43Speaker 2: was a physical player, a more physical player than a Joemo.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So Milton Williams could execute sort of that two gap
- 3:51Speaker 2: gap and a half scheme up front, okay, which fits
- 3:55Speaker 2: way better with Zach Bond. Zach Bond is not necessarily
- 4:00Speaker 2: a downhill take on player. He's a rangey player. That's
- 4:03Speaker 2: his game. He's really good at it. He's a rangy
- 4:06Speaker 2: athletic player, and he's a great coverage player. But he's
- 4:10Speaker 2: not a physical player in a strict sense. So what
- 4:13Speaker 2: happens now when you have a Jomo playing, because he's
- 4:15Speaker 2: much more of a one gap penetrator, is now you
- 4:18Speaker 2: need to get somebody else involved in the run game.
- 4:21Speaker 2: So now you need a safety to play down. And
- 4:24Speaker 2: that's one reason why they're playing more single high this year,
- 4:28Speaker 2: because they need a safety involved to stop in the
- 4:31Speaker 2: run game. And it doesn't play to what Bonn's strengths are.
- 4:35Speaker 2: So and Bonn's a terrific player, but every player has
- 4:38Speaker 2: clear strengths and you know, clear limitations. So it also
- 4:42Speaker 2: really starts up front as to why they're playing more
- 4:46Speaker 2: single high and more man when in fact, you know
- 4:49Speaker 2: the normal response would be it's just on the back end,
- 4:52Speaker 2: but it's not. It all works together with a domino effect.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So Greg, going back to college, Michael Carter a duke,
- 5:01Speaker 1: He played safety there, and we know Vic likes guys
- 5:05Speaker 1: who can play safety and nickel, So do you see
- 5:09Speaker 1: this as a really good scheme fit? And I also
- 5:12Speaker 1: wonder I want to ask you has Vic played dime
- 5:16Speaker 1: much as a coordinator in his career, because I feel
- 5:18Speaker 1: like he has an opportunity or to either play a
- 5:20Speaker 1: yeah role or dime whether you call Carter a safety
- 5:24Speaker 1: or a corn.
- 5:24Speaker 2: He definitely played dime when he was in Denver because
- 5:27Speaker 2: I can remember the dying player and now I just
- 5:30Speaker 2: can't remember his name, but he was came from Texas
- 5:35Speaker 2: and he was a big time recruited Texas and never
- 5:37Speaker 2: became a great college player. But then he played dime
- 5:41Speaker 2: for a couple of years in Denver and now, god,
- 5:45Speaker 2: it's making me crazy, but he did play. He was
- 5:47Speaker 2: their dimes essentially their dime safety because I can see
- 5:51Speaker 2: him making a great interception against Dak Prescott, a play
- 5:55Speaker 2: that I broke down in the matchup show. I just now,
- 5:57Speaker 2: for the life of me, I can't remember his name.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I'm sure what well, if I pull up Denver's de.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, while you look at that, Adam. It's really something
- 6:06Speaker 1: we talked about optionality, but never really. It just hit
- 6:08Speaker 1: me last night just thinking about the twenty seventeen team
- 6:12Speaker 1: and when they when they brought in Corey Graham, it
- 6:15Speaker 1: was for depth, but then he played well and they
- 6:17Speaker 1: started to play that big nickel slash dime because Graham
- 6:20Speaker 1: was a safety or a corner because he played both.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But that package really became a big part of their
- 6:25Speaker 1: defense that year, and they really went with one linebacker
- 6:29Speaker 1: a lot. I forget I think it was it was
- 6:32Speaker 1: Kendricks right after a Hicks got hurt. They felt like
- 6:35Speaker 1: they had more depth in the secondary than a linebacker
- 6:37Speaker 1: because at that point they were down to Kendricks and
- 6:39Speaker 1: and remember they were pulling Donn l l LB out
- 6:42Speaker 1: for the playoffs. So I don't the Eagles are not
- 6:45Speaker 1: that thin. They have good linebackers, but it certainly if
- 6:47Speaker 1: you want to match up against the Cowboys, against the Packers,
- 6:50Speaker 1: against the Lions, who could spread you out it's nice
- 6:52Speaker 1: to have a dime package like that.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Which versatility was it? Was it Caden Sterns Gregg.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yes, yes, here's what happened.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yes, the Eagles brought him in last Remember he was
- 7:07Speaker 3: the one who tore the a c l and he
- 7:08Speaker 3: is They loved him. And then what happened is because
- 7:12Speaker 3: vic was here. It was here last year. Obviously they
- 7:15Speaker 3: brought him in. Was he on and off the practice squad?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Jeff?
- 7:18Speaker 3: They kept cutting him?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Bring him back.
- 7:19Speaker 3: He's got a football. It's awful to shame.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I know.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, he's the player. He was a big
- 7:24Speaker 2: time recruits, big time five star played at Texas had
- 7:27Speaker 2: you know it was a solid college player, but not
- 7:29Speaker 2: a superstar, not a high draft pick. But he was
- 7:32Speaker 2: the dying player for Vic in Denver, I think for
- 7:35Speaker 2: two years, if memory serves me correctly.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So if you Will Parks, well I remember Will Parks. Yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you're right. So, so he has a history of dime
- 7:45Speaker 1: and the Eagles are very predominantly nickel and they're successful
- 7:49Speaker 1: in it. But yes, if they just want to get
- 7:51Speaker 1: a good defensive back on the field, Let's say they're
- 7:54Speaker 1: getting good play from Jacorey and Bennett and they're fine,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and Cooper still the nickel, then you still we can
- 8:00Speaker 1: go to a dime package getting Carter on the field
- 8:03Speaker 1: if you want to match up against a five wide
- 8:05Speaker 1: look or even you know, a couple of tight ends
- 8:08Speaker 1: who might you know, be Tuck Tucker Craft against the Packers. Right,
- 8:11Speaker 1: they've got Watson back, they've got Craft, they've got Dumbs,
- 8:14Speaker 1: they've got somebody else around for Matthew Golden, so they
- 8:17Speaker 1: can they can put a lot of receivers on the field.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he did play meaningful snaps at safety
- 8:24Speaker 2: at Duke, no question. I just don't think. I mean, look,
- 8:28Speaker 2: if you play dime, you can certainly play dime with
- 8:32Speaker 2: you know, four corners, two safeties, three safeties, three corners.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I mean there's multiple ways you can play dime.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Obviously, I would just see him as an interior slot.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He'd be an interior player, right, not necessarily a deep
- 8:44Speaker 1: safety or a box just a coverage guy.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, we all know, and I know this for a
- 8:49Speaker 2: fact that they do not want to move to Gene.
- 8:51Speaker 2: But at some point you've got to put your best
- 8:54Speaker 2: people out there exactly if they feel like they can't
- 8:57Speaker 2: handle the corner position, particularly if they continue to feel which,
- 9:00Speaker 2: by the way, will lead us into Dean. We'll get
- 9:02Speaker 2: to the reason Dean's going to play more in a
- 9:04Speaker 2: minute as he did last week. But if they just
- 9:07Speaker 2: feel like they can't handle the outside, you know, have
- 9:09Speaker 2: to continue to play more man, more single high, then
- 9:13Speaker 2: it's very possible that move could be made.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Fascinating man, fascinating. So you know, look, the Eagles didn't
- 9:20Speaker 3: have to give much for him because you just didn't
- 9:21Speaker 3: fit with the Jets. But but Jeff, there's an opportunity
- 9:25Speaker 3: here to and the guys, you know, Carter signed for
- 9:27Speaker 3: future season, so it's not like who doesn't work or
- 9:31Speaker 3: it works, they have to pocision to make They have
- 9:33Speaker 3: them on a contract so they don't have to use
- 9:36Speaker 3: them right now. But they got him for very little,
- 9:37Speaker 3: and there's just to me, this trade is all about upside.
- 9:39Speaker 3: They gave up nothing, literally nothing to get them. Right.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Do you have a coach on your staff that coached
- 9:44Speaker 2: him and knows the kid, you know, then then you
- 9:47Speaker 2: feel pretty comfortable. And I'm sure Joe Casper had much
- 9:51Speaker 2: to say about it as well, obviously, and I'm sure
- 9:54Speaker 2: they feel very very comfortable with bringing him in.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And so do the guy who drafts him, Je Douglas,
- 9:58Speaker 3: who works for Howie and I'm told he works with
- 10:00Speaker 3: the coaches a lot.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So there you go.
- 10:03Speaker 3: You put this the counter stuff that it wasn't aware of.
- 10:05Speaker 2: That's great, And this happens a lot, by the way,
- 10:07Speaker 2: you know, and you guys know this that there there's
- 10:11Speaker 2: often when guys get into the league, okay, because don't forget,
- 10:13Speaker 2: all these guys are evaluated by teams and then you know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: teams don't draft everybody that they like that there's not
- 10:20Speaker 2: enough draft picks to do that. So a lot of
- 10:22Speaker 2: times if a player gets cut from another team or
- 10:25Speaker 2: they see that he's available, if someone in the front
- 10:28Speaker 2: office says, hey, you know, we really like this guy.
- 10:31Speaker 2: You know, if he's available, let's go get him. That
- 10:34Speaker 2: happens a lot. And then guys, because it's based on fit,
- 10:37Speaker 2: you know, guys can become good players. We talk Hey
- 10:40Speaker 2: we talked about that with Josh Joe. But it's just
- 10:42Speaker 2: I find this very very interesting how that plays out.
- 10:45Speaker 2: There's no real rhyme or reason for it, and sometimes
- 10:47Speaker 2: it just works out. Sometimes it fits better. Sometimes the
- 10:50Speaker 2: guy matures as a person, so you know, whatever the reason.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You know, maybe the room is just better for him
- 10:56Speaker 2: and he you know, he has better relationships with the
- 10:59Speaker 2: other players in the room, you know. I mean there's
- 11:02Speaker 2: probably ten different reasons.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, at very least at very least, right, the
- 11:07Speaker 1: Eagles did not have somebody. I'm sure Vic Fangil is
- 11:09Speaker 1: not comfortable with any of his options in the slot
- 11:12Speaker 1: if Cooper de Gen were to get hurt, forget moving outside.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, the other issue, right, No, I mean clearly
- 11:21Speaker 1: mc McWilliams is not that guy yet. I we'll see.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And Parry Nickerson is a nice guy for a game
- 11:26Speaker 1: if you need some backup depth. But you know, if
- 11:29Speaker 1: you need someone to play like a starter, you have
- 11:31Speaker 1: Michael Carter.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I think his mother probably resembles that remark.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah that's good. Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 11:43Speaker 1: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 11:46Speaker 1: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is

- 12:34Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 12:37Speaker 1: one and up. All right, so let's shift gears and
- 12:40Speaker 1: talk about Nakobe Dean. He's been back for three games,
- 12:43Speaker 1: but he's really only played two on defense, the Vikings
- 12:46Speaker 1: and the Giants, and he played more against the Giants
- 12:49Speaker 1: and the Vikings, so we saw an uptick in his usage.
- 12:52Speaker 1: What did you see on tape from Nikobe specifically?
- 12:57Speaker 2: There's a lot that goes into this as well. By
- 12:59Speaker 2: the way, I think Dean played well last week. You know,
- 13:02Speaker 2: I think Dean Dean has a great feel for playing
- 13:06Speaker 2: in the run game. He shoots gaps really effectively. He's
- 13:09Speaker 2: got a very quick trigger. He sees it, well, there's
- 13:13Speaker 2: an aggressive nature to him. But now let's put this
- 13:18Speaker 2: in perspective in an ideal world. In an ideal world,
- 13:22Speaker 2: what the Eagles want to do is start out almost
- 13:25Speaker 2: every play in a quarter structure. Okay, that doesn't mean
- 13:28Speaker 2: they're going to play quarters on every play obviously, So
- 13:31Speaker 2: in the Eagles defense, safeties are absolutely critical. One could
- 13:36Speaker 2: argue that red blanket Chip is the quarterback of the defense.
- 13:40Speaker 2: He's the critical piece because they want to make adjustments
- 13:43Speaker 2: on almost every play based on what the formation is,
- 13:47Speaker 2: based on any number of factors that the offense shows you.
- 13:50Speaker 2: They want to be able to make adjustments on literally
- 13:52Speaker 2: every play. Okay. That's why you often hear in a
- 13:56Speaker 2: Vic Fangio defense that it's so intellectually intensive and safeties
- 14:01Speaker 2: are the critical piece because they they they're like the quarterback.
- 14:04Speaker 2: They see the whole picture. Okay, So now what's happened
- 14:07Speaker 2: this year? And just so people understand, you know, I
- 14:11Speaker 2: did speak to someone because I was trying to get
- 14:13Speaker 2: a feel for, Okay, why Dean is going to play
- 14:16Speaker 2: and you know why because Campbell, you know, is clearly
- 14:19Speaker 2: a better athlete that's not even in question. Right, The
- 14:22Speaker 2: issue has become that the Blankenship has had to do
- 14:27Speaker 2: too much work in basically positioning Campbell. So you know,
- 14:33Speaker 2: as good an athlete as Campbell is, it just has
- 14:35Speaker 2: become too much and it you know, and Blankenship is
- 14:41Speaker 2: so good at this, but it's taken away from from
- 14:44Speaker 2: you know him. So whereas with Dean, he doesn't have
- 14:47Speaker 2: to do that. Dean knows the defense backwards and forwards
- 14:50Speaker 2: and doesn't have to you know, he knows what to do.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You don't have to. You don't have to deal with
- 14:55Speaker 2: Dean as far as that's concerned. So they know that
- 14:58Speaker 2: Campbell is a far better a athlete and he's definitely
- 15:02Speaker 2: gonna play and you know, down the road he may
- 15:05Speaker 2: well be the guy. But they just, you know, right now,
- 15:08Speaker 2: Dean just gives them so much more in terms of
- 15:11Speaker 2: the execution of the vic Fan Joe defense.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Greg going back to Dean's college tape, because now you
- 15:18Speaker 3: look last year, he was terrific early on in his career,
- 15:21Speaker 3: was still learning.
- 15:22Speaker 2: What did you think of it coming out of Georgia,
- 15:26Speaker 2: Like everybody concerned about his size, but he was a
- 15:28Speaker 2: terrific blitzer. What year did he come out this.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Will be year four now, so the yeah twenty two.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Alurright, I'm gonna pull it out. I don't remember, you know,
- 15:39Speaker 2: I don't have that right and you know, yeah, on
- 15:41Speaker 2: top of my head.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You don't have the twenty twenty two draft, every single
- 15:45Speaker 1: person right in on top of your head.
- 15:46Speaker 2: You know what I didn't. I wasn't studying that last
- 15:48Speaker 2: night when I went home.
- 15:51Speaker 1: He was probably on the two thousand and sixth fourth
- 15:54Speaker 1: round going through all those guys.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I said. Dean is a short and smaller than desired,
- 16:01Speaker 2: stacked linebacker with high level run and chase qualities, whose
- 16:05Speaker 2: most effector as a run defender when he can be
- 16:07Speaker 2: cleaned to the football. Although there were snaps in which
- 16:10Speaker 2: he proactively played through contact to make tackles, he played
- 16:14Speaker 2: in a Georgia defense that asked him to shoot gaps
- 16:16Speaker 2: and blitz a good percentage and featured multiple stunt concepts
- 16:20Speaker 2: that accentuated his downhill explosiveness. He showed excellent short area
- 16:23Speaker 2: of quickness and explosiveness in the box. Blah blah blah.
- 16:27Speaker 2: But I ended up saying that given the similarities in size,
- 16:31Speaker 2: Dean reminded me of Nick Bolton coming out of Missouri.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Wow, very good one. He's a good linebacker.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And by the way, you talk to anybody at
- 16:41Speaker 2: the Eagles and they'll tell you that the last seven
- 16:43Speaker 2: eight games last year he was phenomenal, not just good,
- 16:45Speaker 2: but phenomenal.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yep, yep. I mean they got the best linebacker out.
- 16:49Speaker 1: They got the best stacked linebacker play they've had in
- 16:51Speaker 1: you know, maybe since the seventies. I don't know, they've
- 16:54Speaker 1: been grout.
- 16:56Speaker 2: And I also think they realized, and it's probably a
- 16:58Speaker 2: function of Vic fanjo that linebacker plays really important in
- 17:03Speaker 2: his defense. That was always the case. I remember talking
- 17:05Speaker 2: to people when Vick was in Chicago and people said
- 17:08Speaker 2: to me, linebackers are critical in his defense. So, Jeff,
- 17:12Speaker 2: I'm sure he's made it clear to Howie Roseman, because
- 17:15Speaker 2: you know, all through the years, you know, a lot
- 17:17Speaker 2: of people made sarcastic jokes about the fact and how
- 17:20Speaker 2: he wasn't interested in linebackers. And now I'm sure Vic
- 17:24Speaker 2: because Vic' you know, he's not the kind of guy
- 17:26Speaker 2: that pulls a lot of punches. So I'm sure he
- 17:28Speaker 2: made it pretty clear that linebackers matter.
- 17:31Speaker 3: I mean, Jeff, but we started this thing in the
- 17:33Speaker 3: spring of twenty eighteen.
- 17:34Speaker 1: It just was.
- 17:36Speaker 3: It was a carrier over which Greg's talking about disposable linebackers.
- 17:41Speaker 3: They're in, they're out, They're in, they're out. And now
- 17:45Speaker 3: Campbell and Dean and Bond together this might be the best.
- 17:49Speaker 3: It's got to be right up there in the NFL
- 17:50Speaker 3: right now. It's talented inside backer.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty sure I can remember a starting nickel
- 17:56Speaker 1: tandem of Nate Gerry and Duke Riley, which ye don't talk, Yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 1: cut it right, I mean, I just does not cut.
- 18:02Speaker 2: It, by the way, just just so people understand, because
- 18:05Speaker 2: I really like Dean. Here here was my last line
- 18:08Speaker 2: before I made the Nick Bolton comparison, and I said, overall,
- 18:11Speaker 2: there was an explosive feel to Dean's game and that
- 18:13Speaker 2: will likely translate a factory effectively to the next level.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Despite his less than ideal size. There are not many
- 18:19Speaker 2: inside linebackers with his combination of play speed, slash range
- 18:23Speaker 2: and short area explosiveness and feel for working in confined
- 18:27Speaker 2: space with burst in velocity. So I really liked him
- 18:30Speaker 2: coming out. Obviously, you know, I couldn't remember all that
- 18:33Speaker 2: that was, you know, four years, three years ago, but
- 18:35Speaker 2: right I.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Really remember Jeff. He dropped the third round. We we'd
- 18:39Speaker 3: heard it was strictly there, so we'd never missed a game.
- 18:42Speaker 3: His body type. Greg, we talked to enough people. Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 3: you're concerned, and you mentioned it. You were concerned. Would
- 18:48Speaker 3: he hold up now?
- 18:49Speaker 2: Five eleven and a half to twenty nine?
- 18:52Speaker 3: Now he's put yeah?
- 18:56Speaker 2: Wait, so people understand how much I watch guys, Here's
- 18:58Speaker 2: what I did. I watched Clemson, Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, both
- 19:02Speaker 2: Alabama games, the Michigan game, and all his tackles, tackles
- 19:06Speaker 2: for losses and quarterback sacks. So I saw a lot
- 19:09Speaker 2: of plays of Nakobe Dean when he came out of Georgia.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Wow. Interesting, it's tough.
- 19:15Speaker 1: So I'm wondering this, Greg, based on what you what
- 19:18Speaker 1: we know you shared with us there. Did you observe
- 19:21Speaker 1: on tape that it seemed like read blanket Ship was
- 19:25Speaker 1: not playing at his best. I mean, obviously you don't
- 19:27Speaker 1: know what a guy's going through his head if he's
- 19:29Speaker 1: mentally overloaded, but you can tell if he's slower or
- 19:32Speaker 1: not as instinctive as he used to be. We haven't
- 19:34Speaker 1: really talked about.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Here's what I was told because you know, I'm not
- 19:38Speaker 2: charting Reid Blankenship on every play right obviously, and if
- 19:42Speaker 2: a guy's not making tackles all the time, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 2: I don't know exactly what his you know, should he
- 19:47Speaker 2: be lining up two yards inside the numbers? Should he
- 19:49Speaker 2: be aligning? You know, that's all that's really You got
- 19:52Speaker 2: to be in their meetings to know that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I was told that Read Blankenship is having an
- 19:57Speaker 2: unbelievable season and that people who are just looking at
- 20:01Speaker 2: tackle numbers or interceptions are totally missing the point that
- 20:05Speaker 2: he's had to do more mentally this year than he
- 20:08Speaker 2: did a year ago, just you know, even because of Macuba,
- 20:12Speaker 2: because Maccuba is not at the level of Gardner Johnson
- 20:15Speaker 2: in terms of his understanding of the whole game, and
- 20:18Speaker 2: that he's doing more this year and playing at such
- 20:21Speaker 2: an incredibly high mental level, and that the people like
- 20:25Speaker 2: like PFF that just look at his tackles and give
- 20:27Speaker 2: him a bad grade, that they have no idea what
- 20:30Speaker 2: he's being asked to do.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That's interesting, Adam, because you know, as we're talking about here,
- 20:36Speaker 1: they have a no I don't think anybody in the
- 20:39Speaker 1: coaching staff would say Campbell is doing a bad job
- 20:41Speaker 1: of warning the defense. He's athletic, he's explosive. That first
- 20:45Speaker 1: game against the Cowboys, he's defending tight ends down the
- 20:47Speaker 1: alley and you know, breaking up passes. He has a
- 20:50Speaker 1: fumble recovery. So they've got to find.
- 20:52Speaker 3: This balance, right, Well, that's why they're not giving him
- 20:55Speaker 3: the true edge rusher snaps in terms of rush by
- 20:58Speaker 3: passer because they're trying not to put too much on
- 21:00Speaker 3: his plate. And Ni Kobe is so advanced metal standpoint,
- 21:04Speaker 3: he is so far ahead of Nollie Campbell of understanding
- 21:10Speaker 3: the defense. But you talk about his ascension, really, Jeff
- 21:15Speaker 3: it started a training camp last year after that bad
- 21:18Speaker 3: night practice, something happened and the light went on and
- 21:22Speaker 3: he just kept rising and rising. Greg said he had
- 21:24Speaker 3: heard down the final stretch before he got hurt. It
- 21:28Speaker 3: was incredible. He might have been their best defensive player,
- 21:30Speaker 3: certainly one of the best. That's and he's healthy. He's healthy.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I know the defensive staff loves him. And just so
- 21:38Speaker 3: people understand too about Campbell because I know we get
- 21:40Speaker 3: asked this.
- 21:41Speaker 2: We've discussed it. The Patreon guys have asked me this
- 21:43Speaker 2: as well. Is they don't feel he has the strength
- 21:46Speaker 2: to play on the edge, you know, in a four
- 21:49Speaker 2: man line. They just don't feel he's strong enough at
- 21:52Speaker 2: this moment in time. Don't forget he's a rookie. You know,
- 21:56Speaker 2: who knows what's going to happen with another offseason. You know,
- 21:58Speaker 2: you just don't know. But they just don't feel like, yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 2: that he has the strength to do that.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Makes sense, makes sense. Give him an off season in
- 22:08Speaker 1: the weight room and maybe you got something there.
- 22:09Speaker 3: But again, they've given him a lot to do, you know, yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 3: they've give him a lot different roles to do. And
- 22:15Speaker 3: it's remember what is this his fourth years inside BACKERMA,
- 22:22Speaker 3: we were talking about as a freshman? Was he inside?
- 22:26Speaker 3: Did they switch from edge to backer as a freshman.
- 22:28Speaker 2: As a freshman, I can't remember. I do remember. I
- 22:33Speaker 2: think he got switched pretty early on.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it might be his fifth or sixth. But the
- 22:37Speaker 3: bottom line, his majority of his football career he was
- 22:40Speaker 3: an edge rusher. I know he has to learn how
- 22:42Speaker 3: he has a learned it, not only the Alabama system,
- 22:45Speaker 3: but the way that they teach it here in.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Phill And by the way, the people that think, oh
- 22:48Speaker 2: we played in the SEC, it's like the NFL. You
- 22:51Speaker 2: got to disregard the other people who think things like that, Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 2: college to the NFL, college football.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Hey, I still a good night out, but I'm not

- 24:30Speaker 1: and you can understand it. You know, the next time
- 24:32Speaker 1: the Eagles play is going to be Monday night in
- 24:34Speaker 1: lambeau Field against a very good Packers team against a
- 24:37Speaker 1: very smart, offensive minded head coach who very good field
- 24:42Speaker 1: for play calling and how to exploit weaknesses. So you
- 24:45Speaker 1: you can understand wanting sacrificing a leticism to get the
- 24:49Speaker 1: knowledge and the wisdom and being in the right spot
- 24:51Speaker 1: and lining up the defense correctly if the Kobe Diane continues.
- 24:55Speaker 2: To not look, not every code coach really wants to
- 25:00Speaker 2: make adjustments on almost every play, you know, And that's
- 25:04Speaker 2: you know, that's a vic Fangio thing, I mean, you know,
- 25:06Speaker 2: and not every coach does that. And because you have
- 25:08Speaker 2: to feel really good about your players because if one
- 25:10Speaker 2: guy does something wrong, you know how, that screws up
- 25:12Speaker 2: the whole defense. Right. So, and by the way, that game,
- 25:16Speaker 2: assuming Green Bay does not stub its toe versus Carolina,
- 25:19Speaker 2: that'll be six to one and one versus six and two.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I mean that's a huge, huge game.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no doubt about it, all right, Gret, great stuff. Greg,
- 25:29Speaker 1: thank you very much for your tape breakdown on both
- 25:32Speaker 1: Michael Carter and n Kobe Dean and even your Intel.
