- 0:01Speaker 1: We don't have extra protections. You've got to be very
- 0:04Speaker 1: aware and conscious. I take steps to make sure that
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm safe. If I'm doing a big trip and I'm
- 0:14Speaker 1: by myself, I won't post about it until after the
- 0:16Speaker 1: trip's done. I won't give live updates of where I am.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I got taught that early days from the police who
- 0:22Speaker 1: were like, you need to be really careful and not
- 0:25Speaker 1: give live updates because stalkers could happen. and I'm going
- 0:29Speaker 1: to really remote spots with no phone reception. Just be
- 0:34Speaker 1: aware of where you park. I try to park under
- 0:37Speaker 1: lights to make sure that I'm seen. It's interesting because
- 0:41Speaker 1: my partner and my friends are men, and when I
- 0:46Speaker 1: express a few things, like say we're doing a trip
- 0:48Speaker 1: together or whatever, and I'm like, oh, can we not
- 0:50Speaker 1: park here? I want to park up the road. This
- 0:53Speaker 1: is the reason why. They're like, oh, I've never even
- 0:54Speaker 1: thought of that. So there's things that definitely I just–
- 0:57Speaker 1: as women, we're just taught, right? Like if you're walking
- 1:01Speaker 1: at nighttime and you're by yourself, you carry your keys
- 1:03Speaker 1: and you have a key sticking through your finger, right?
- 1:06Speaker 1: In case someone actually can stab them. So I think
- 1:09Speaker 1: there's things as a woman in existence, we've just been
- 1:12Speaker 1: raised as little girls to have all of these tools
- 1:15Speaker 1: in our belt that when I talk to men about that,
- 1:17Speaker 1: like I've never even thought about. I did a post
- 1:19Speaker 1: once where I was like, if you know, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and it was me walking at nighttime through a truck
- 1:23Speaker 1: stop with my keys through my fingers. And the amount
- 1:25Speaker 1: of women who jumped in and a lot of men
- 1:27Speaker 1: were like, I don't understand. What are you doing?
- 1:29Speaker 2: What is that?
- 1:30Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, they actually had no idea
- 1:33Speaker 1: that this is something that our parents taught us as
- 1:35Speaker 1: little girls. So, yeah, just be really– we're just really
- 1:41Speaker 1: more aware. I think I've never really felt unsafe and
- 1:45Speaker 1: if I did, I just kept driving. And I don't–
- 1:50Speaker 1: there's evil out in the world everywhere but I don't
- 1:52Speaker 1: see it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Well, that's really good. I just, I wondered, cause I
- 1:57Speaker 2: know like at nighttime, if you have to sleep or
- 1:59Speaker 2: whatever it is, I wonder if that's just like a
- 2:03Speaker 2: little more daunting if you know you're by yourself and like,
- 2:06Speaker 2: you know, some guy might just try to get into
- 2:08Speaker 2: your truck.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah. You just like, I just, a lot of men
- 2:12Speaker 1: will try and park up the road where there's no
- 2:14Speaker 1: trucks or there's no noise. Um, because you know, but
- 2:18Speaker 1: for me, I don't feel that that's a safe option
- 2:21Speaker 1: for me. So I'll park in the busy truck stop
- 2:23Speaker 1: under the lights right next to the building and um,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I'll put my, I'll make sure that all my doors
- 2:31Speaker 1: are locked. I will put my seatbelt through the door.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So it's just like a second thing so that, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 1: there's definitely things like that, but I just think that
- 2:39Speaker 1: that's more like, I'm just trying to eliminate risk.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Um, because, and like, also when you're walking back to
- 2:48Speaker 1: your truck late at night, just look around you. Is
- 2:51Speaker 1: anyone following you? Is, has anyone noticed you don't draw
- 2:53Speaker 1: too much attention to yourself? Um, things like that. Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah. No. And it's, yeah. I mean, it's a sad
- 3:02Speaker 2: reality with women in general. I mean, I was just,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know, I've had some weird instances myself, but I
- 3:10Speaker 2: remember just being in Boston with my husband on vacation
- 3:12Speaker 2: and these girls just ran up to us and they said,
- 3:15Speaker 2: can you just surround us? Cause this guy's following us
- 3:18Speaker 2: and we can't go anywhere. And so this whole group
- 3:20Speaker 2: of people just huddled around them so that he couldn't
- 3:24Speaker 2: find them. And then when he did, and he was–
- 3:27Speaker 2: I mean, he was mentally unwell too, you could tell. But, like,
- 3:30Speaker 2: he wouldn't go away. He stood there. But this whole
- 3:31Speaker 2: community just came around and were, like, protecting these girls because,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you know, most of the time it's a guy who's
- 3:38Speaker 2: going after a girl.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's– that society, though, I don't think it's
- 3:46Speaker 1: necessarily a truck thing.
- 3:48Speaker 2: No, yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I think that that's just a, like– the sad reality
- 3:54Speaker 1: of where we're at. But, you know, just if you
- 3:58Speaker 1: can create community, especially out in the road, you always
- 4:01Speaker 1: feel protected because you've got, like, all your brothers out
- 4:03Speaker 1: there who kind of have your back.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know and you have your phone and
- 4:10Speaker 2: you also are trained and you know, so that's really helpful.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, like, you know, go into bathrooms and have
- 4:17Speaker 1: a look around. Can you see if there's any hidden cameras?
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's something that's always on my mind. Like, is there
- 4:22Speaker 1: hidden cameras in here? Not that I've ever seen it. No,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I don't think so. But I think that that's also
- 4:28Speaker 1: just been a thought. Back when I was like 17
- 4:32Speaker 1: at my first job, there was a shower. My girlfriend
- 4:36Speaker 1: and I, we'd go to boxing, then we'd go to
- 4:38Speaker 1: work and we'd have a shower. And one day she
- 4:41Speaker 1: comes and she's rattled. She's like, I think someone was
- 4:42Speaker 1: watching me. And I was like, really? And so I
- 4:47Speaker 1: went into the shower with her the next time and
- 4:49Speaker 1: we stood guard watching the dog. sure enough one of
- 4:53Speaker 1: the mechanics was watching us showering yeah peeping tom yeah
- 4:58Speaker 1: so um crazy that story just came to my mind
- 5:04Speaker 1: um but there's like when you were a girl this
- 5:07Speaker 1: is we we grow up with all these experiences and
- 5:11Speaker 1: it's just normal so then you're just like putting it
- 5:13Speaker 1: into your arsenal of like okay well make sure that
- 5:15Speaker 1: there's no cracks like make sure that like I'm going
- 5:18Speaker 1: to like if there's a shower and there's no screen,
- 5:21Speaker 1: put like a towel over it so in case someone
- 5:23Speaker 1: looks through or they can get through, there's another level
- 5:26Speaker 1: of hidden. I've gone to truck stops where I didn't
- 5:30Speaker 1: feel safe going to that bathroom so I didn't shower
- 5:33Speaker 1: at all and I just used wet wipes. But that's
- 5:37Speaker 1: just existence as a woman really. I don't feel, and like,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you know, if you're going to, sometimes I'd be going
- 5:45Speaker 1: to the quarry late at night and I know that
- 5:46Speaker 1: no one's there and I know that it's a one-way
- 5:48Speaker 1: road so if anyone's going to follow you up there
- 5:50Speaker 1: so I'd call my dad and I'd be like hey
- 5:52Speaker 1: dad can you meet me at the quarry just so
- 5:53Speaker 1: that I've got a second person with me um because
- 5:57Speaker 1: I didn't feel safe going in there by myself but
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think a man would also feel the same like
- 6:01Speaker 1: when I talk to my mates they'd be like yeah
- 6:02Speaker 1: I don't feel safe going in there either um but
- 6:05Speaker 1: we just had to do it so just calling a
- 6:06Speaker 1: buddy um or if you're doing night shift just um
- 6:10Speaker 1: do it in convoy. Just tell that person not, or
- 6:13Speaker 1: you wait for the next truck and then you just
- 6:14Speaker 1: drive in convoy. So you're not ever by yourself.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I think for me, it's just so hard,
- 6:21Speaker 2: particularly if women, and this is not to do with trucking,
- 6:23Speaker 2: but just, you know, if a man is going to
- 6:25Speaker 2: get hurt most of the time, it's just directly, he's
- 6:28Speaker 2: going to get hurt. You know what I'm saying? But
- 6:30Speaker 2: for a woman, there's like a process. There's like one
- 6:33Speaker 2: thing they want to do first and then you're dead
- 6:36Speaker 2: or you're taken or whatever. And like that, you know,
- 6:39Speaker 2: That for a woman, I feel like is so hard
- 6:41Speaker 2: that there's that. I don't know. It makes me sad
- 6:45Speaker 2: when I think about it. Cause it's just like a
- 6:46Speaker 2: woman has the things that a woman has that are
- 6:50Speaker 2: beautiful and like compliment her being a woman and differentiate
- 6:53Speaker 2: her from man are the things that can become targets.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah. It's yeah.
- 6:59Speaker 2: It's crazy. And sometimes it's just. Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Like there's definitely, I worked on a mine site when
- 7:05Speaker 1: I was younger and I was assaulted there. in my
- 7:10Speaker 1: room by someone who like followed me in there and
- 7:13Speaker 1: that was really like an awful experience and then I
- 7:15Speaker 1: felt that I couldn't say anything because I thought that
- 7:18Speaker 1: if I told anyone it would give them reason to
- 7:22Speaker 1: not have me there because I was a liability risk
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know and it took me a long time to
- 7:26Speaker 1: finally tell my manager and try and but then like
- 7:29Speaker 1: I didn't want like it was just a It was just, yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 1: like in mind science, make sure that no guys follow
- 7:35Speaker 1: you back to your room because they could break in,
- 7:39Speaker 1: stuff like that. But, like, honestly, like that is just
- 7:41Speaker 1: such a tiny little minute thing. Like typically it's just
- 7:44Speaker 1: been awesome. But I think America's got a lot higher
- 7:50Speaker 1: crime rate towards women than what Australia does. It's not
- 7:52Speaker 1: really something that's in the media much. I think here
- 7:55Speaker 1: it's more so women are actually like it's more so–
- 8:01Speaker 1: domestic abuse um is a huge more of a thing
- 8:05Speaker 1: but like I think random attacks isn't necessarily such a
- 8:08Speaker 1: huge thing in Australia I think it's a lot worse over.
- 8:10Speaker 2: There yeah no you're right maybe I should move to
- 8:14Speaker 2: Australia I don't know America we're America's getting we're having
- 8:18Speaker 2: a lot of issues right now things are really piping
- 8:22Speaker 2: hot over here um lots of conflict um But I
- 8:28Speaker 2: want to just wrap up because I want to be
- 8:30Speaker 2: respectful of your time. I do want to ask you
- 8:32Speaker 2: one last question that I've wondered is, what's the worst
- 8:36Speaker 2: thing someone has said to you because you're a trucker?
- 8:41Speaker 2: And then just to tie it in, what is something
- 8:43Speaker 2: that was really encouraging to you that someone said that
- 8:46Speaker 2: you remembered?
- 8:49Speaker 1: What's the worst thing?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Like what's maybe most hurtful?
- 8:54Speaker 1: The worst thing would just be like trolls online. really
- 8:58Speaker 1: like that would be just the main thing like that
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm attention seeking or that I'm a liability risk on
- 9:04Speaker 1: the road because I'm short or like you're too short
- 9:09Speaker 1: to be a truck driver I hope your work seizes
- 9:11Speaker 1: and you get fired wow.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And you're like are you texting while you're driving question.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Mark yeah it's like people that take bingo's while driving
- 9:19Speaker 1: of someone else's accident um yeah like to my face
- 9:23Speaker 1: I really can't even think of one thing that people
- 9:26Speaker 1: like said that. If I tell people I'm a truck driver,
- 9:27Speaker 1: they're like more so like, what? That's wicked. And they
- 9:30Speaker 1: want to know more. Like, you don't look like a
- 9:32Speaker 1: truck driver. And you're like, yeah, but I am. So,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, and positive is that I've made a difference
- 9:41Speaker 1: and that I have shown people what's possible or that
- 9:46Speaker 1: I've inspired them or opened their eyes to what's possible
- 9:50Speaker 1: or the fact that I love it when people comment
- 9:53Speaker 1: that they aren't interested in trucks or being a truck driver,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but my videos have opened their eyes. eyes to understand
- 10:01Speaker 1: the industry more. Because, like, it's an industry that's, like,
- 10:06Speaker 1: an essential part of– it's an essential trade, like, essential industry. Yeah. Yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 1: I– I think it's more so that I've, like, helped
- 10:18Speaker 1: make a difference. And, like, I love that my book has, like,
- 10:22Speaker 1: is showing kids that they are welcome.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I know. I saw that, which I think it's called,
- 10:26Speaker 2: is that Auntie?
- 10:30Speaker 1: Is that my auntie?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yes. Where they're trying to find their auntie's truck.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, like aunties coming to visit. And so it's all
- 10:38Speaker 1: about celebrating all the different truck drivers they see during
- 10:41Speaker 1: the day and explaining what the trucks do and the
- 10:44Speaker 1: essential roles they play. Yeah, so it's actually based on
- 10:47Speaker 1: my real-life niece and nephew. Wow. And I love when
- 10:50Speaker 1: they ring me about it. So hopefully that's the first
- 10:54Speaker 1: of many and we can just keep inspiring the next
- 10:57Speaker 1: generation and show them that it's a safe and welcoming
- 11:00Speaker 1: and fun industry and that if they want to join,
- 11:04Speaker 1: they can too.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Well, I am so grateful for you. Thank you for
- 11:09Speaker 2: taking this time to do this. And also you've helped
- 11:11Speaker 2: me learn a little bit more about trucking. I'm glad
- 11:14Speaker 2: I asked you some of these questions because I was
- 11:16Speaker 2: kind of coming in blind.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You asked me some really thought-provoking questions that I've never
- 11:22Speaker 1: publicly spoken about. And, yeah, it's nice to get asked
- 11:27Speaker 1: questions that make you think. So thank you for that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And I hope that I didn't make anything seem too
- 11:34Speaker 1: negative because really like my– I'm really positive and I
- 11:38Speaker 1: love my life and what this industry has given me.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And I hope that other people might, even if they
- 11:44Speaker 1: don't want to be truck drivers, maybe open their eyes
- 11:46Speaker 1: to think about who they're sharing the road with as well.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I will. I will totally. You've helped me now.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I hope to be less upset and be like, why
- 11:58Speaker 2: did he do that? And more of like, well, he's
- 12:00Speaker 2: trying to get in and he did give me like
- 12:02Speaker 2: a minute warning, but I just was kind of dawdling.
- 12:05Speaker 2: yeah just hold back because they're slowing you can just
- 12:07Speaker 2: go around once he's in.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Just go like is that traffic lights it's like oh
- 12:11Speaker 1: this truck it's like yeah but you can get around
- 12:14Speaker 1: in two seconds you're not going to save anything by
- 12:15Speaker 1: pulling in front just like this person is on the
- 12:18Speaker 1: road doing a job they've got somewhere to be and
- 12:21Speaker 1: they have a time slot they have to get there
- 12:23Speaker 1: um they're missing their friends they're missing their family they're
- 12:26Speaker 1: sacrificing to get your food on the shelves they're getting
- 12:29Speaker 1: your clothes to the store um you know like The
- 12:33Speaker 1: building supplies to build a house, you know, like everything
- 12:36Speaker 1: in your room right now has got there because of
- 12:38Speaker 1: a chop. So if you can just like, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 1: you just say thank you.
- 12:42Speaker 2: You know, they're not.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Going to hold you up too much.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much. I'm so grateful. Thank you. Bye.
