- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the IM team series and your daily influence and today we are going to be talking about leveraging technology for intergenerational team collaboration and this is often a pain point in our clients organizations it is that point where older generations.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: be less than the younger generations, because they don't know the technology that younger generations do.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: And how can we leverage that?
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: How can we leverage that difference of one and a half to two generations now growing up in a technological world?
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the rest of us is having to catch up all the time.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the first thing is is bridging the communication gap through that technology and it can enhance that by providing opportunities for different generations to collaborate on learning mentoring it can humble some of us in different generations.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: as we allow people younger than us to teach us how they are integrating technology in their lives and using it to their advantage.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we might not see those advantages because of the ways that we are wired or that our experience is driven us.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: We might even push back against it.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: But when we bridge that communication gap and we work with them,
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then the younger team members will gravitate towards helping us because they use tools like instant messaging collaboration tools like slack and teams and project management tools where we like email face to face keep in a physical calendar so when we do this and we use each other to help see the value that bridges that.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: communication gap using the technology as the bridge.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: And as we lean into our strengths, those of us that can manage a manual schedule, a manual process, and bring that level of detail understanding to the technology side, we can learn how to integrate better.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: Also adapting the tools for the diverse skill sets we have in the skill levels.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: Understanding our shortcomings, understanding the things that we don't know, because we don't know what we don't know.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: But when we identify our ignorant as we work through technology gaps, as we work with people who know things that we don't know, we can learn how to adapt better.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: We can use that literacy, that digital literacy of younger generations to help up skill us.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, again, it forces us to be humble and it forces them to also when you identify how you can apply your knowledge to solving problems that technology may not be doing a good job at.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: And as you work together and get that training together, your relationships will build.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: more strongly.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: If we approach this also from smart, and we're honest and transparent with each other, we become specific with each other.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: We can apply measurement to the things we're doing with technology and outside of technology.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: We can feel more attainable at learning new technologies, and it becomes more realistic when we align ourselves and we attach ourselves to those people that we might not know very well, we might not drive
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: We might not get along with in our minds because we're so separated by generation gaps.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: But we have this connection.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: We have this common bond.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: We work in the same organization.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: We use the same tools.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: We fall back on the same policies and procedures.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, we have the same mission.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: This helps us to collectively work together.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: And we begin to nurture each other from our experience in the business and our experience with these new technologies.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: As leaders, if we encourage this knowledge sharing,
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: reverse mentorship, looking down at people, not down is and down on, but down to people who are new in our organizations and leveraging their skill set, leveraging the things that they know that they are better at.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: And reconciling that to the things that we know we have to share with them, then that knowledge share using the technology we have available to us.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: The lessons we learn from that technology will build.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: amazingly strong and cohesive intergenerational team.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: More seasoned employees bring experience, experience and strategy, experience and leadership, experience and problem solving.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Younger employees bring fresh perspectives, these digital skills, these new ideas, almost this unafraidiveness to jump into things.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: especially if they feel supported by those of us that have work experience and when we leverage technology, project management software, communication software, organizational software, and we can share that knowledge and we can share that with each other, then we create this opportunity for continuous improvement.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: Continuous learning, and we begin to have a positive influence on each other.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: And that environment will grow and grow.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: It will become individual to the team member, but it also become individual collectively to the team.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: And as we recognize that as leaders, and as our teams recognize that and the leaders within them, you'll notice that it just grows exponentially.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: And it actually will be a culture shift for your organization.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: And you will see positive and
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: I hope that any of you who are struggling with leveraging technology or dealing with intergenerational team collaboration can have a valuable takeaway from today.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: Find a place to get a foothold to bring those generations together to mentor each other to support each other to move towards that common mission that common goal that you have as an organization that supports the individual goals of each of them.
