Ep. 188. Who is Pete Wisdom in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hello Marvel fans, Marvel geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:14
My name is Megan with vigilante vibes where I talk all things
• 0:18
Marvel, all the Marvel Comics, MCU, Marvel Studios, all that
• 0:22
amazing stuff. So today I want to talk about
• 0:25
another mutant that I feel like just does not get the credit
• 0:29
they deserve for who they are is the character.
• 0:31
I didn't know where to end that sentence.
• 0:33
But today I want to talk about Pete Wisdom.
• 0:36
Pete showed up in Excalibur #86 and was created by Warren Ellis
• 0:41
and Ken Lashley. Something interesting to know
• 0:44
about Peter Wisdom is that it's said that he's a self insert of
• 0:48
Warren Ellis. So basically Warren wrote
• 0:50
himself as Pete. It's said that.
• 0:54
So, I mean, I haven't seen anyone say it's not true.
• 0:58
So take, take that for what it is.
• 1:02
Peter Wisdom grew up in London, England, and is the son of DCI
• 1:05
Harold Wisdom of the New Scotland Yard.
• 1:09
His mom was murdered by the serial killer Michael Ryan while
• 1:13
she was waiting for Pete, who didn't show because they'd had
• 1:17
an argument. Ever since he's carried the
• 1:20
guilt of her death. I would too.
• 1:22
I I would blame him. So when he was younger and
• 1:28
basically MI 6's rising star Pete was in love with a girl
• 1:33
named Sorry. He was shooting up the ranks and
• 1:36
promised her he wouldn't let the job get in the way of their
• 1:39
relationship, which is always famous last words.
• 1:42
You never say that because that's exactly what's going to
• 1:44
happen. He ended up joining Black Air
• 1:47
even though Sorry could not stand them.
• 1:49
Later on, Sorry who'd become an assassin, got hired to kill the
• 1:53
Queen, and when she failed, Pete shocked her by turning her over
• 1:58
to Black Air. He actually did it because he
• 2:00
cared about her and hoped she'd get the help in rehab.
• 2:03
During this time with Black Air, Pete saw and did some truly
• 2:06
horrific things. At one point they sent him to
• 2:10
New York to steal the still beating heart of an immortal
• 2:14
worshipped by a doomsday cult. He expected to find the place
• 2:19
empty but instead walked into a whole cult, animals included,
• 2:23
dead from poisoning themselves days earlier.
• 2:26
Which I feel like Colts tend to do.
• 2:28
It's normal cult behavior. When terrorists took over the
• 2:32
medieval looking fortress on British territory in Antarctica
• 2:36
called Cold Grey, Pete was dispatched and he wiped out the
• 2:40
entire group even though he knew they were family men.
• 2:44
So Pete eventually crossed paths with Excalibur thanks to Black
• 2:49
Air, which had become interested because of the connection
• 2:52
between Brian Braddock's father and his special type of ammo
• 2:56
made from a genotion Mutates skin.
• 3:00
After that, he ended up fighting against Black Air, including his
• 3:05
old rival Scratch. Around the same time, he started
• 3:08
dating Shadow Cat, which is Kitty Pride or Kate Pride or
• 3:12
whatever she goes by now. I don't which Lockheed
• 3:16
definitely did not approve of Lockheed.
• 3:19
If you don't know Lockheed is the Kitty pride's dragon that I
• 3:23
think I actually have one here one second I do if you're if
• 3:34
you're watching on YouTube, you actually see Lockheed if you're
• 3:39
listening to the audio. This is really awkward, sorry.
• 3:44
Some of the team worried Kitty was going to get hurt by him.
• 3:48
Then her ex Colossus, who just left the Acolytes, showed up on
• 3:51
Muir Island to find her. He happened to see her with Pete
• 3:54
and not being in a great headspace, attacked him out of
• 3:58
nowhere. They fought and Colossus nearly
• 4:01
beat Pete to death, leaving him in a wheelchair for a while.
• 4:05
Even though Pete was drunk and caught off guard, he fought back
• 4:08
hard enough that Colossus ended up in critical critical
• 4:11
condition too. Which is, that's OK.
• 4:14
Well, at least you stood your ground.
• 4:17
After his time with Kitty, Pete ran into X Force in Genosha.
• 4:21
Not long after, he set up his own independent spy network
• 4:25
meant to keep the world's intelligence agencies in check
• 4:28
  regarding how they treated mutants.
• 4:30
He met with Alastair Stewart to talk about Black Airs human
• 4:34
rights abuses, especially against mutants, and revealed
• 4:38
he'd blown up a Secret Service lab that had been dissecting
• 4:42
warpies, blaming Stewart for not shutting it down when he had
• 4:46
been in charge. Pete eventually became the new
• 4:49
leader and mentor of X Force, now wearing an eye patch just
• 4:53
for the aesthetic, like he just wanted the vibe.
• 4:58
At one point he even seemed to be killed by the genetic
• 5:01
terrorist Doctor Niles Roman, though it later turned out to be
• 5:04
a Fake out. He later went back to work for
• 5:09
British Intelligence. When Alastair Stewart learned a
• 5:12
Martian invasion was coming, he decided to shut down the
• 5:15
department and fold it into an MI 6 for access for more
• 5:19
  resources. Because the Intel was
• 5:21
classified, he didn't warn Pete ahead of time.
• 5:24
Pete took it personally and went straight to Parliament and the
• 5:28
Ministry of Defense to argue that he should be given
• 5:30
authority over all the weird happenings in Britain.
• 5:34
He managed to convince them, and that's how he ended up running
• 5:37
his own agency in my 13, because of secrecy and interdepartment
• 5:44
mental drama, Alistair wasn't allowed to explain why he'd
• 5:48
left. So the agency with the knowledge
• 5:50
of the invasion was suddenly completely separate from the
• 5:54
agency with the power to act on it.
• 5:56
Which that's unfortunate. Pete was one of the mutants who
• 6:02
kept their powers after M Day. Soon after, he teamed up with
• 6:07
Captain Britain, Sage, Juggernaut, Nocturne, Dazzler,
• 6:11
and others to fight Shadow X evil versions of the original
• 6:16
X-Men and their mentor from an alternate reality.
• 6:19
After that, Pete pushed to bring Excalibur back together with
• 6:23
that same lineup, even getting the Home Secretary to formally
• 6:27
clear Juggernaut of any crimes on UK soil so he could
• 6:30
officially be part of the team. From there, Pete became MI 13's
• 6:35
field commander. Early on, he ended up in an
• 6:39
arranged marriage with a rogue fairy named Tink to seal a truce
• 6:43
and stop a fairy invasion of Earth.
• 6:46
That did not last long since he quickly started sleeping with
• 6:50
another MI 13 operative, Maureen Raven.
• 6:54
Their relationship also fell apart, and after Maureen dumped
• 6:57
him, Pete was forced to kill her in order to close a portal the
• 7:01
Martian Masters had used for her her to open.
• 7:05
Pete fought during the scrolls of Secret Invasion, trying to
• 7:09
stop them from destroying the Siege Perilous and invading
• 7:12
Avalon alongside the rest of MI 13.
• 7:15
Later, during Norman Osborne's Dark Reign, Dracula launched an
• 7:21
invasion on Britain using a vampire army from a base on the
• 7:24
  moon. Pete ultimately outplayed
• 7:27
Dracula and wiped out his forces.
• 7:29
How many people can say that they took out Dracula?
• 7:34
Like that's Like, Pete's kind of a scumbag, but that's pretty
• 7:37
cool. He also got tangled up with
• 7:39
Gambit in a heist involving Excalibur.
• 7:42
It turned out to be a setup by Boria Sitch, who had Gambit on
• 7:46
an explosive leash to break into MI 13's massive weapons storage.
• 7:52
Gambit outsmarted Sich and helped Pete get the arsenal back
• 7:55
  and arrests Sich's people. Later.
• 7:58
Gambit cashed in that favor during a prison raid, which
• 8:02
ended with Gambit getting killed by Sich for a short time.
• 8:05
No one's ever dead ever, except like Karen Page, Uncle Ben,
• 8:12
  Marvel. This isn't about them.
• 8:16
In retaliation, Pete executed Sich on the spot.
• 8:20
Eventually, Pete became wrapped up with Coven Aqaba as part of
• 8:26
the MI 13 duties, especially as the Coven grew in influence
• 8:30
After Betsy Braddock became the new Captain Britain, a final act
• 8:34
of free will before Morgan Lafay took control of her brother.
• 8:38
Pete found himself torn between loyalty to Britain and loyalty
• 8:42
to mutant kind, and he seemed to choose Britain, leaving the
• 8:46
Hellfire Gala with Coven Aqaba. But the Coven betrayed him and
• 8:52
sacrificed him to free Morgan Lafay from Jamie Braddock, the
• 8:56
new mutant King of Avalon. Pete was brought back on Krakoa
• 9:01
by the Five. Which like I'm going to, I have
• 9:04
to make a video about the five because it's so interesting and
• 9:08
I would love to see a comic book run of the Five.
• 9:12
But I also feel like a lot of past writers have used the 5:00
• 9:16
to just kind of like a Band-Aid, I'd say.
• 9:22
But that's fine. And now that Britain no longer
• 9:26
recognized the island as a nation of Krakoa, he realized
• 9:31
going home or returning to MI 13 was not an option.
• 9:34
So he had the Five resurrect the old Strike PSI Division and help
• 9:40
him defend Krakoa. Now that you know all about good
• 9:46
old Pete's story, what exactly is his powers?
• 9:51
Peter is a mutant, so what's his mutant ability?
• 9:56
Pete can soak up heat from the environment as well as sunlight
• 9:59
and then fire that stored energy from his fingertips as the semi
• 10:04
solid blast he calls hot knives. They're basically pure thermal
• 10:11
energy, supposedly as hot as the surface of the sun.
• 10:14
He can also shape them into Shields that burn up incoming
• 10:18
missiles or use the heat to create lift underneath him so
• 10:24
when he's falling he doesn't hit the ground as hard.
• 10:27
Pete can launch his hot Pete can launch his hot knives like
• 10:32
projectiles and keep them extended from his fingers like
• 10:35
claws. When he's fighting up close.
• 10:38
He's got really precise control over them too, able to either
• 10:42
cause massive damage or just knock someone out.
• 10:45
He can change the size of how and how many knives he's
• 10:49
producing at once, and if he focuses, he can make one of
• 10:53
those knives stick around longer than the others.
• 10:56
So that's Pete Wisdom. I don't know, he's hot knives
• 11:03
gets me every time. So let's talk about some comics
• 11:08
that you can check out to get to know Pete Wisdom even better.
• 11:11
Obviously you have to read pride and wisdom number one through 3,
• 11:15
which is Kitty pride and Pete wisdom, Excalibur 86 through 114
• 11:21
and wisdom one through 6. So with that being said, I hope
• 11:25
you learned something in today. I hope you check out those
• 11:27
  comics because he's a he's a he's a cool character and I hope
• 11:32
you'll like and subscribe. With that being said, have a
• 11:34
  marvelous day.
