- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite

- 0:50- This is Laura Dirdo with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:52- podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:54- Eduardo O'Conrado, president and chief executive officer of
- 0:57- Ascension. Eduardo, it was a pleasure to have
- 0:58- you on the podcast today. Thanks for the
- 1:00- invite, Laura. Absolutely. Now I'm excited to have
- 1:02- you on the podcast because I know, you
- 1:04- know, Ascension is doing some really amazing things,
- 1:06- and you've been a great leader there. But
- 1:08- before we dive in, can you just tell
- 1:09- us a little bit more about yourself and
- 1:11- the health system? Perfect. So I've been with
- 1:13- Ascension for ten years, initially on the board,
- 1:16- seven years in the management team. I was
- 1:18- the the president for three years.
- 1:21- And, today, I think, is my hundred and
- 1:23- third day as CEO.
- 1:26- Amazing. So,
- 1:28- let's jump right in here. Could you tell
- 1:30- us a little bit about your first hundred
- 1:31- days? What has stood out to you as
- 1:32- president and CEO of Ascension? One of the
- 1:34- nice things of being the president first for
- 1:36- three years and then kind of transitioning to
- 1:38- CEO is just
- 1:40- a continuation of the strategies that we've been
- 1:42- working on. And we've been focusing around patient
- 1:44- experience,
- 1:46- associate engagement, diversification of our portfolio,
- 1:49- you know, quality and safety in terms of
- 1:52- just the foundation of what we do. And
- 1:53- then as we kind of look at how
- 1:55- we serve the communities,
- 1:56- how do we
- 1:58- shift our portfolio to be more ambulatory? So
- 2:00- you've been seeing a lot of the movements
- 2:03- in either divestitures, but lately on the acquisition
- 2:06- front.
- 2:06- That's amazing to hear. And, you know, I
- 2:08- think that ambulatory strategy is something that so
- 2:10- many health systems right now are trying to
- 2:12- figure out and dig deeper into, and you've
- 2:14- made a huge investment in ambulatory. And,
- 2:16- I'm curious, when you think about that strategy,
- 2:19- what about,
- 2:20- making that leap in becoming more of an,
- 2:23- health system with more ambulatory
- 2:26- facilities and put footprint is exciting to you,
- 2:28- and what makes you nervous? Well, so we
- 2:30- started this four years ago when we started
- 2:31- looking at all the segments in health care
- 2:35- and the growth.
- 2:36- And then so we thought that the inpatient
- 2:38- side was kinda having flat growth,
- 2:41- and our strategy was to make sure that
- 2:43- we increase the acuity in the hospital.
- 2:45- But we saw also a migration towards ambulatory,
- 2:48- at home settings,
- 2:50- ASCs,
- 2:52- imaging,
- 2:53- outpatient PT, you name it.
- 2:55- Then COVID happened, and that even accelerated even
- 2:57- more. And then so here we are now,
- 3:00- you know, four years later when we started
- 3:02- kind of looking at, at the strategy.
- 3:04- We are seeing probably, like, a 20%
- 3:07- CAGR
- 3:08- on the ambulatory,
- 3:09- settings that we've put put in place.
- 3:11- And then last year, we even stepped further
- 3:13- back, and we said, hey. We're not growing
- 3:15- fast enough on the ambulatory,
- 3:17- surgery center space, and then we did the
- 3:19- definitive agreement to, acquire Amsearch.
- 3:22- And that's gonna transform us. It's gonna make
- 3:25- us, probably, the third largest ASC platform in
- 3:28- The US,
- 3:29- which will enable to accelerate our 10 markets
- 3:31- that we're in, but but also in the
- 3:32- other 25 states that Amsearch has presence, you
- 3:35- know, serve as a growth engine for independent,
- 3:38- physicians and also for other nonprofits.
- 3:40- That's amazing to hear. And, you know, what
- 3:42- a a huge and transformational time for the
- 3:44- health system.
- 3:45- I'm curious. What are some of the operational
- 3:47- decisions and strategic investments that are driving the
- 3:50- momentum around Ascension's
- 3:52- strong financial results from the first half of
- 3:54- the year in 2026. Can you talk a
- 3:55- little bit about that and how it really
- 3:57- dovetails into your overall strategy? Sure. So we
- 4:00- we looked at the operating model. Just, you
- 4:02- know, how do we run efficiently? How do
- 4:04- we drive out into a proper site of
- 4:05- care? And then how do we manage a
- 4:07- revenue cycle? That to me, that was just
- 4:08- the basics in terms of how do we
- 4:10- have a consistent way to operate across all
- 4:12- the ministries that we're in. Then we said,
- 4:15- you know, we wanna be able to be
- 4:16- high quality.
- 4:17- So we focus on on that space, continue
- 4:19- focus. We We wanna be able to be
- 4:21- the preferred side of work,
- 4:23- for associates.
- 4:24- So we focus on retention and engagement,
- 4:27- and then we wanna be the frictionless system,
- 4:30- in all our communities. So we focus around
- 4:32- consumer and patient experience. And then so we've
- 4:34- been seeing pretty much all our scores set
- 4:36- in the right direction.
- 4:37- That eventually, if you get all that right,
- 4:39- it translates into financial performance. Right? And then
- 4:43- we looked at the portfolio itself,
- 4:45- and that's what we've been kind of doing
- 4:47- a lot of our investment is transforming that
- 4:49- portfolio.
- 4:50- I think it matches payer preference, but it
- 4:53- also matches,
- 4:54- patient preference. And then so we've probably done
- 4:57- over $2,000,000,000 turnaround,
- 4:59- over the last few years, and the momentum
- 5:01- continues into this year. Oh, that's significant. And,
- 5:04- you know, I can imagine exciting to be
- 5:05- leading an organization,
- 5:07- with that type of momentum in growing,
- 5:09- overall. Now how is Ascension redesigning care to
- 5:12- better serve Medicaid and uninsured patients and expand
- 5:15- across the continuum of care? Perfect. That's a
- 5:18- great question. We serve 1,100,000
- 5:22- lives in our communities that are either medic
- 5:24- Medicaid or uninsured.
- 5:26- And then so we've been looking at, you
- 5:28- know, utilization,
- 5:29- high utilization of ED.
- 5:32- That means that we have to step back
- 5:33- and look at the data and, you know,
- 5:34- what's the main cause for that. Part of
- 5:35- it is access to primary care in the
- 5:37- community,
- 5:38- solving some of the trans transportation needs that
- 5:41- they have.
- 5:42- There's some,
- 5:43- access to pharmaceuticals.
- 5:46- And then so, you know, Addison had a
- 5:48- quote that he didn't invent the light bulb
- 5:49- by optimizing the candle, and that's the approach
- 5:52- that we're taking. We step back and said,
- 5:53- okay. You know, we need to do it
- 5:55- differently. So we're looking at how do we
- 5:57- partner with HQACs,
- 6:00- in a tighter manner in the community, complementing
- 6:02- our community clinics. We got Dispensary of Hope,
- 6:05- which is,
- 6:06- access for the uninsured patients for pharmaceuticals.
- 6:09- How do we expand the presence of Dispensary
- 6:11- of Hope across all the markets that make
- 6:13- it easy to have access for for all
- 6:15- of our patients.
- 6:17- The need for using the ED should only
- 6:18- be for, you know, high level emergencies,
- 6:22- moving to have ASCs in the community also
- 6:24- to serve their needs. Eventually, when you think
- 6:27- about two years down the road, which you
- 6:29- see better attachment to primary care, better attachment
- 6:32- to access to,
- 6:34- Dispensary Hope, which you see a decrease in
- 6:36- utilization of the ED,
- 6:38- which should actually all the clinical KPIs, which
- 6:41- we should see a healthier community.
- 6:43- And over the long term, lower cost to
- 6:45- serve the patient, which I think matches the
- 6:48- community need, but also what the government wants
- 6:50- us to do.
- 6:51- That is really amazing to hear. And, you
- 6:52- know, it's so important to have that right
- 6:54- side of service and that type of care
- 6:56- available and accessible to patients, especially those who
- 6:59- are Medicaid beneficiaries and uninsured patients who sometimes
- 7:02- have trouble accessing care.
- 7:04- And when you think about that whole,
- 7:06- continuum and and everything that's,
- 7:09- involved in that, it also includes,
- 7:11- changing patient behavior of how, like you said,
- 7:13- not going to the ED for everything unless
- 7:15- it's appropriate. So how do you help communicate
- 7:18- that out to the community and just make
- 7:20- sure that people are understanding what's all available
- 7:22- to them now that you've got so many
- 7:24- options and opportunities?
- 7:25- Perfect. That's a great question. So, you know,
- 7:27- part of it is navigation. I think as
- 7:29- patient come in through the the system, how
- 7:31- do we navigate into the purpose etiquette and
- 7:33- then communicate that? I think with the digital
- 7:36- tools, we also are able to kind of
- 7:38- get an amplifying voice.
- 7:40- But a good example in terms of how
- 7:41- do we get out to the community, we're
- 7:43- about to ramp up our
- 7:44- mission at home,
- 7:46- which,
- 7:47- we did three of them last year. We're
- 7:49- gonna do 16 in May. So I'm super
- 7:51- excited that as we go into next month,
- 7:53- we're gonna be in every one of our
- 7:55- our markets,
- 7:56- same month. And the reason we wanted to
- 7:57- do it in the same month is to
- 7:58- be able to kinda have a bigger impact.
- 8:01- We have almost 4,000 volunteers signed up,
- 8:05- for the mission at home. And it's basic
- 8:07- services. Right? So we communicate to the community.
- 8:09- We have primary care, mammography.
- 8:12- We do
- 8:13- shoes,
- 8:14- food, dentistry, which is a huge need. And
- 8:18- then so depending on the needs of the
- 8:19- community, we kind of set it up for
- 8:21- that one day on the weekend. But part
- 8:23- of that is also
- 8:24- making sure that if during the intake, if
- 8:26- they don't have a primary care doctor, we
- 8:28- can assign them either to one of our
- 8:30- community clinics or one to the HQACs available
- 8:32- in the in the community. So that is
- 8:34- not a one and done event. It's just
- 8:37- an entry point to give them access to
- 8:39- the needs.
- 8:41- That's amazing to hear. Thank you so much
- 8:42- for sharing a bit with us about that.
- 8:44- Now before we wrap up, I'm curious. How
- 8:46- is Ascension preparing for the future of health
- 8:48- care more broadly?
- 8:50- Well, in part, it's our portfolio changes. You
- 8:52- know, as we see the migration towards ambulatory
- 8:55- settings,
- 8:56- we also see changes in CMS as more
- 8:58- codes come out of the hospital.
- 9:00- We're invested in our existing hospitals,
- 9:03- just to refresh the plan, refresh the medical
- 9:05- equipment. It should be a pristine place to
- 9:07- get care, but we think the acuity is
- 9:09- gonna increase.
- 9:11- Our footprint on the ambulatory side
- 9:14- is gonna quadruple,
- 9:15- in the next year.
- 9:17- That that kind of sets us up for
- 9:18- the future as more and more procedures move
- 9:20- into ambulatory setting. You know, we have the
- 9:22- portfolio to be able to kinda match that.
- 9:25- That's amazing to hear. Well, Eduardo, thank you
- 9:27- so much for joining us on the podcast
- 9:28- today. This has been an amazing discussion. I'm
- 9:30- excited for the growth of Ascension and look
- 9:32- forward to connecting with you again soon. Thanks,
- 9:34- Laura. Appreciate the invite.
