- 1:16Speaker 2: the Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:18Speaker 3: It is Thursday at three o'clock here at Jillette Stadium,
- 1:23Speaker 3: kind of special Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:25Speaker 2: We're wrapping up Mini camp.
- 1:27Speaker 3: We just got off the practice field a hot day
- 1:30Speaker 3: here at Jeelette Stadium to end mini camp.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And that's it.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I mean, other than the rookies, this is it for them.
- 1:36Speaker 3: They're checking out and going their separate ways. The next
- 1:40Speaker 3: time we see them, it'll be training camp and summer
- 1:44Speaker 3: will be for all intents.
- 1:46Speaker 2: And purposes over for us, which sucks.
- 1:49Speaker 4: But anyway, forth, let's start of summer right now though,
- 1:51Speaker 4: So let's celebrate anyway.
- 1:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So it's Evan, it's Paul, it's me, it's Deuce, it's
- 1:56Speaker 3: Matt and Nabooth, and we're going to talk about everything
- 1:58Speaker 3: that we saw over the last three days and what
- 2:01Speaker 3: that means going forward. Right yeah, yeah, So eight five
- 2:05Speaker 3: to five Pats five hundred is the way to call
- 2:07Speaker 3: podcast at Pages dot com is the email address. So
- 2:11Speaker 3: let's start it right off. You know, the first day
- 2:15Speaker 3: on Tuesday was more of a normal practice. Yesterday was
- 2:18Speaker 3: a little bit lighter, slower pace, more of a walkthrough
- 2:21Speaker 3: and today a lot of red zone work. As we
- 2:24Speaker 3: saw on Tuesday, a lot of red zone work.
- 2:27Speaker 2: What do you make of that?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Well, we always talk about they start in the red zone.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I mean it's the hardest place to score. It's important
- 2:32Speaker 4: part of the field. Everything's compressed, you know. Yesterday they
- 2:36Speaker 4: kind of walked through I think what they were going
- 2:38Speaker 4: to do today, and the defense I thought kind of
- 2:42Speaker 4: held the day. I mean, a couple of touchdowns to
- 2:44Speaker 4: AJ Brown were nice. I mean, an amazing acrobatic catch.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I'm sure we'll talk plenty about that. I was right
- 2:49Speaker 4: next to that was crazy to watch. But I would
- 2:52Speaker 4: just say coming out of this, my biggest thing is
- 2:54Speaker 4: just Drake May year two. It's something I've talked about
- 2:56Speaker 4: on the show. Love what we heard from from Josh
- 2:59Speaker 4: McDaniels yesterday, you know about sending Drake to the line
- 3:02Speaker 4: with no play call. I just that to me is
- 3:05Speaker 4: everything to help him get to the point where he's
- 3:08Speaker 4: the conductor. You know he can and as Josh said,
- 3:11Speaker 4: you know, it's get us out of bad place, you know, being.
- 3:13Speaker 5: Able to give the quarterback the tools he.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Needs to make decisions so that they're not you know,
- 3:17Speaker 4: all right, this isn't gonna work, but this is the place,
- 3:19Speaker 4: so we're gonna run it. I'm just really excited about
- 3:21Speaker 4: Drake and your two and I think that they're taking
- 3:24Speaker 4: smart steps to try to accelerate that growth process of
- 3:27Speaker 4: him under control in this offense.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Rabel said something the other day about he wants
- 3:33Speaker 3: to go fast. In fact, I want to go too
- 3:36Speaker 3: fast so that when you get into the game it
- 3:39Speaker 3: doesn't seem that fast.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Do you feel like that was the case today or no?
- 3:43Speaker 6: No, I mean Evan and I talked a little bit
- 3:45Speaker 6: about that because it was pretty intense today, and I
- 3:47Speaker 6: think they were trying to hype up, especially the coaching
- 3:51Speaker 6: staffs and Rabel were trying to get some intensity to
- 3:53Speaker 6: practice and get some speed to practice. He was talking.
- 3:56Speaker 6: I think the quote you're referencing was about Eli Reridan
- 3:59Speaker 6: and just at this point in his career, it is
- 4:01Speaker 6: miss making mistakes fast instead of trying to go slower,
- 4:05Speaker 6: to try to get the right mental rep down to
- 4:08Speaker 6: go fast and then they'll correct the mistakes that they
- 4:11Speaker 6: you know, he makes in terms of the mental stuff.
- 4:13Speaker 6: But I thought today it was pretty intense. I think
- 4:15Speaker 6: the red zone build up you know, we saw two
- 4:18Speaker 6: OTA's they were working more in the middle of the
- 4:20Speaker 6: field and on first and second down, so I think
- 4:23Speaker 6: that they, you know, had already done the installation of
- 4:26Speaker 6: you know, between the twenties base offense, and now they
- 4:29Speaker 6: were installing the red zone stuff. So I don't really,
- 4:32Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't really care for red zone
- 4:34Speaker 6: work personally, it's not my thing, but I hope, yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 6: I just I don't know. It's just I feel like
- 4:42Speaker 6: it doesn't really show you much, but it was fun.
- 4:45Speaker 7: So I would say the red you know, the drawbacks
- 4:48Speaker 7: of red zone practice, especially everything's a touchdown well, especially
- 4:52Speaker 7: in mini camp, is you can't run the ball. So like,
- 4:57Speaker 7: to me, that's part of what makes a really good
- 5:00Speaker 7: red zone team is the physicality, and you don't see
- 5:02Speaker 7: that really in practice, even when they do have pads
- 5:05Speaker 7: on in training camp very rare. Do you see them
- 5:07Speaker 7: go on blocking, running, tackling to the ground and you know,
- 5:12Speaker 7: things like that. So I understand what Evan's talking about.
- 5:14Speaker 7: I do think Fred to answer you know, your question
- 5:18Speaker 7: just about tempo. You know, I thought on Tuesday especially,
- 5:22Speaker 7: they were running very crisp. I thought the players were
- 5:25Speaker 7: coming in and out efficiently. Not surprisingly, as Mike mentioned,
- 5:30Speaker 7: I think Drake May was kind of covered them up
- 5:32Speaker 7: a little bit today. I thought the defense pushed back
- 5:34Speaker 7: a little bit more. They were having a harder time
- 5:37Speaker 7: I thought uncovering. But the one thing that really stood
- 5:41Speaker 7: out to me overall today especially was just how competitive
- 5:45Speaker 7: it was in that setting. You know, shorts, t shirt,
- 5:47Speaker 7: you know, and I thought both sides were treating it seriously.
- 5:50Speaker 7: They wanted to score, they wanted to stop you from scoring,
- 5:53Speaker 7: and there was a lot of talk about it.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, knowing it's the last practice
- 5:58Speaker 3: and that's it. I think you want to end then
- 6:00Speaker 3: a you know, high note for both sides of the ball.
- 6:03Speaker 5: A little scary there at the end.
- 6:06Speaker 7: Last play was a little scary. Why is that Drake
- 6:09Speaker 7: May ended up on the ground. Yeah, I mean he
- 6:11Speaker 7: threw a touchdown to a J.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Brown to kind of ended and I was watching AJ
- 6:14Speaker 4: Brown because AJ Brown is trotting over to the defense
- 6:17Speaker 4: to spin the ball in their face because they've been
- 6:18Speaker 4: going back and forth. But then the boys in for me,
- 6:21Speaker 4: they like know, Drake you know, got ran into and.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Was on the ground. So it was a little bit scary.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Evans Evan's ready to start getting kids off the teams.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Yeah he's no, he's throwing. He's throwing passes after practice
- 6:32Speaker 4: and everything seems fine.
- 6:33Speaker 5: But I don't know he was fine.
- 6:35Speaker 6: They did, but they ended practice with about three minutes
- 6:37Speaker 6: on the clock, and I think they were Tommy DeVito
- 6:40Speaker 6: was supposed to get another another turn added and Drake
- 6:43Speaker 6: was on the ground and Rabel said.
- 6:44Speaker 2: That's it.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Called everybody up.
- 6:47Speaker 7: Yeah, that was that. Yeah, but I do think they
- 6:49Speaker 7: got some good work done.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I mean describe the Brown touchdown now to
- 6:53Speaker 4: me was the highlightscribe It was like he's going it was.
- 6:57Speaker 7: A back shoulder play, but I think he intentionally and
- 7:00Speaker 7: listening to him talk about it after practice, I think
- 7:04Speaker 7: he sort of intentionally turned the wrong way to try
- 7:07Speaker 7: to deceive the defensive back. He didn't say that he
- 7:09Speaker 7: tried to. He did it to try to deceive the
- 7:11Speaker 7: defensive back, but that's how I saw it. He spun around,
- 7:16Speaker 7: you know, track the ball over the other shoulder, made
- 7:18Speaker 7: the catch.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I mean, he has like incredibly soft hands.
- 7:23Speaker 7: And then he said he was really happy that he
- 7:26Speaker 7: was able to get his feet in bounds. But it
- 7:27Speaker 7: was a really athletic play and it was an impressive touchdown.
- 7:32Speaker 7: About four or five plays later, there was a similar
- 7:35Speaker 7: kind of an attempt toward Hunter Henry in the end
- 7:38Speaker 7: zone where he's looking the wrong shoulder, spinning around and
- 7:43Speaker 7: he didn't even get a hand on it. Like this
- 7:45Speaker 7: just shows you how athletic the play was, because it's
- 7:48Speaker 7: not like Hunter Henry is not a good athlete, no,
- 7:50Speaker 7: but it's a you know, different levels, different levels.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I know you're gonna laugh at me, but early in
- 7:56Speaker 3: practice today they were going against air, you know, Coach
- 7:59Speaker 3: was just kind of directing them out there. Booty made
- 8:02Speaker 3: a catch in the back of the end zone one
- 8:05Speaker 3: hand because the ball was high and he was reaching
- 8:07Speaker 3: out of bounce in like got both feet in and
- 8:11Speaker 3: just made it look easy. And I'm just thinking to myself,
- 8:13Speaker 3: this guy is really talented. He's really gifted. I mean
- 8:18Speaker 3: that's why I say I think that there's more out
- 8:21Speaker 3: of him that if we're not going to get it
- 8:23Speaker 3: out of him, some team is going to get out
- 8:24Speaker 3: of him.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I think he's.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Got more to show than we've seen already.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I think he can be.
- 8:31Speaker 3: A consistent producer for you know, for somebody, because he's
- 8:35Speaker 3: got the talent.
- 8:36Speaker 6: But it's a caseh on booty question, Like we keep
- 8:38Speaker 6: talking about this topic and like does he is he
- 8:43Speaker 6: going to be happy with the opportunities that he's going
- 8:45Speaker 6: to get here, no pay somebody, But like I think
- 8:49Speaker 6: that that's what you know. People are just looking at
- 8:52Speaker 6: it purely from let's put the most talented players on
- 8:55Speaker 6: the roster and not thinking about the fact that if
- 8:57Speaker 6: a guy goes from being a regular starter at seventy
- 9:00Speaker 6: five percent of the snaps to thirty percent of the
- 9:02Speaker 6: snaps in a contract year, like what that does for
- 9:05Speaker 6: the player, right, and what that does for the psyche
- 9:07Speaker 6: of the player? And I think that's where you know
- 9:09Speaker 6: we're coming I'm coming from with it. Is it's less
- 9:12Speaker 6: so about is he the one of the more talented
- 9:15Speaker 6: receivers on the team. He's a top five talent at
- 9:18Speaker 6: that position easily on this team. But is if he's
- 9:21Speaker 6: the backup to aj Brown at that position, is is
- 9:25Speaker 6: he going to be on the program. Well, as we
- 9:28Speaker 6: like to.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Say, chances are wherever he goes, he might be a
- 9:31Speaker 3: backup to somebody because I don't think he's a number
- 9:34Speaker 3: one receiver.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Now, not every team has.
- 9:36Speaker 3: A true WR one but I think in a lot
- 9:40Speaker 3: of places they do and they're trying to fill you know,
- 9:45Speaker 3: their depth, and he might have to have that situation
- 9:48Speaker 3: anywhere he goes.
- 9:50Speaker 5: So, but he's not in the top three here. No,
- 9:53Speaker 5: that's different.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so it is different.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but I'm just I'm just saying that, like put
- 9:59Speaker 3: on your offensive coordinator, cap Evan, is there a way
- 10:03Speaker 3: that in a perfect world he could be happy here
- 10:07Speaker 3: with the type of opportunities he would get.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, moving Aj Brown inside would be the way,
- 10:14Speaker 6: you know, I think you know, with AJ Brown, Romeo
- 10:16Speaker 6: Dobbs playing primarily, you know, more inside the formation, then
- 10:20Speaker 6: Booty gets to play keep his spot outside. And I
- 10:23Speaker 6: think you could do that and you know, talented group.
- 10:26Speaker 6: But I would have some question marks about the some
- 10:29Speaker 6: of the things.
- 10:30Speaker 2: You don't think Booty has what it takes to go inside.
- 10:33Speaker 6: I haven't seen it. Like maybe maybe he he does.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I haven't seen he was asked about that on Tuesday
- 10:39Speaker 5: and he thinks he does.
- 10:40Speaker 8: I just.
- 10:44Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 10:44Speaker 7: I would argue to your point. If I were you,
- 10:49Speaker 7: I would hope you're wrong, because if this is all
- 10:52Speaker 7: this untapped potential with Kayshawan Boody. Then that was a
- 10:55Speaker 7: bad trade because they should have just had this guy
- 10:57Speaker 7: be the guy who's going to blossom into whatever body thinks.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I see what you're saying, but I think a brown.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't think he has anywhere near that kind
- 11:08Speaker 7: of a builds, but I don't think he needs to
- 11:11Speaker 7: have that now. I well, I mean, I listen to
- 11:13Speaker 7: you describe it, fred I almost had. The team that
- 11:14Speaker 7: came to mind was Buffalo. You know, a team that
- 11:16Speaker 7: has a.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Lot of guys that you know, complete like Kishan Budi
- 11:19Speaker 4: could do Kishan Boody things playing you know, you know,
- 11:25Speaker 4: like he's probably a better player than those guys. But
- 11:27Speaker 4: that's a skill set, you know, that's a complimentary place
- 11:29Speaker 4: where he could go in.
- 11:31Speaker 5: He might not get.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Extend play getting downfield.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Buffalo, Kansas City, the Giants have thirteen wide receivers because
- 11:39Speaker 6: they have no idea what's going like. There's plenty of
- 11:41Speaker 6: teams where he would.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Be one of the one of the options.
- 11:43Speaker 6: He would have more opportunity to be a starter or
- 11:46Speaker 6: be a top three guy than here.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I know all the gms from the other teams watch
- 11:50Speaker 3: the show, so he'd be worth a get them worth
- 11:54Speaker 3: the first round, first round pick.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Yeah, you know you want to one back.
- 12:01Speaker 7: Yeah, oh yeah, I replace that's just okay.
- 12:06Speaker 2: So that's my little case for case for Booty. All right.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But I think what you guys were saying about today
- 12:15Speaker 3: versus Tuesday is right. I think defense definitely pushed back
- 12:18Speaker 3: more today.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:20Speaker 3: You see that a lot in practices, where one day
- 12:22Speaker 3: it's the offense, the next day it's the defense.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Very vocal though today.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I mean I was reminded of the Detroit Lions hard
- 12:29Speaker 4: knocks when they you know, there was like a whole
- 12:31Speaker 4: like segment where Staley going back and forth at it,
- 12:35Speaker 4: and that was, you know, kind of Scott Booker justin Hamilton,
- 12:38Speaker 4: the cornerbacks coach Kevin Byern was in there to chirpin
- 12:41Speaker 4: and hard for me to see who in the offense
- 12:43Speaker 4: was really yelling back. I know Matt Collins was in
- 12:45Speaker 4: the middle of it, but I think Raybel was getting it,
- 12:48Speaker 4: was doing a lot of I think that's it was great.
- 12:51Speaker 4: I thought it was very entertaining.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I called for it on Tuesday.
- 12:54Speaker 3: You know, competitive practice back in the day where everybody
- 12:58Speaker 3: was going at each other throughout the practice. It was
- 13:01Speaker 3: a you know, a real badge of honor to win
- 13:05Speaker 3: the practice, and Rabel was trying to get that toy.
- 13:08Speaker 7: That was pretty competitive for non padded practice. That's great,
- 13:11Speaker 7: I would agree with you, Fred, Yeah, yeah, no, I
- 13:14Speaker 7: enjoyed the last few days.
- 13:15Speaker 4: I mean it's you know, you have to realize what
- 13:16Speaker 4: you're watching because it's not a ton of real like
- 13:19Speaker 4: you know Devan's point. You're watching at the red zone
- 13:20Speaker 4: and it's very specific. But it's also fun for me
- 13:24Speaker 4: staring at my stupid depth chart that I put together.
- 13:26Speaker 4: You know it really it's like kind of get a
- 13:27Speaker 4: sense of all right, these are the guys who are
- 13:29Speaker 4: kind of in the mix to play, and then this
- 13:32Speaker 4: is the group of guys that are down the depth
- 13:34Speaker 4: chart and they're gonna have to, you know, prove themselves.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I thought it was interesting today with Jack west Over
- 13:39Speaker 4: out that you start to see some of the other
- 13:40Speaker 4: tight ends get some opportunities. And that's a spot that
- 13:43Speaker 4: Brabel said yesterday they might add to but chance today
- 13:46Speaker 4: for Eli Eridan and c.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Jgpree and those kinds banking back to it now.
- 13:50Speaker 7: And I mean it's not surprising, but I agree with
- 13:52Speaker 7: you one hundred percent Mike. It was pretty clear that
- 13:55Speaker 7: Mike is looking to add to that depth chart, and
- 13:57Speaker 7: I could see why today. You know, you have Hunter
- 14:00Speaker 7: Henry and he's really the only guy that looks sort
- 14:04Speaker 7: of natural playing the position. The other guys are either young.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Or you know, kind of blockers work you know, works
- 14:11Speaker 5: in progress.
- 14:12Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, So I can't understand why Mike feels that
- 14:15Speaker 7: way after losing Julian Hill, and that would be surprised
- 14:17Speaker 7: if he didn't see a guy come in before training camp.
- 14:19Speaker 7: He's good to see Reridon grab a couple of balls,
- 14:21Speaker 7: you know, just I mean, it's opportunity kind of thing.
- 14:24Speaker 7: I mean, I like, I just I like the cut
- 14:25Speaker 7: of his jib. I think, you know, I said before this,
- 14:27Speaker 7: I want to see what he looks like. I just
- 14:29Speaker 7: think he's well filled out, well proportioned. He looks the
- 14:32Speaker 7: part of Mauily that you know, he can handle blocking.
- 14:34Speaker 7: He looks like he's got some size to.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Him, he can move, he's an athlete.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the question is just do you feel
- 14:39Speaker 6: comfortable with him being you know, the second tight end
- 14:42Speaker 6: behind Hunter Henry year one right out of the gate.
- 14:46Speaker 6: And also is that you know, totally fair to him
- 14:49Speaker 6: in terms of his development. To ask him to be
- 14:52Speaker 6: a guy that's going to play forty forty five percent
- 14:54Speaker 6: of the snaps, probably, I would say, you know, that's
- 14:58Speaker 6: a position that normally that's asking a lot, you know,
- 15:01Speaker 6: I think that right now with Raridan probably a past
- 15:04Speaker 6: game player early on in his career, a guy that
- 15:06Speaker 6: goes in certain packages, third down, red zone, that kind
- 15:09Speaker 6: of stuff. I don't know if he's ready to be
- 15:11Speaker 6: first and ten from the twenty five and you got
- 15:13Speaker 6: your hand in the dirt and you're blocking a two
- 15:15Speaker 6: hundred and sixty pound defensive end or outside linebacker. I'm
- 15:18Speaker 6: not sure if that's in the cards yet. So do
- 15:20Speaker 6: you go out and add a tight end that has
- 15:23Speaker 6: some experience and maybe a name that we all kind
- 15:25Speaker 6: of recognize to replace Julian Hill? Or are you really
- 15:28Speaker 6: just looking for bodies because you don't have you know,
- 15:31Speaker 6: you lost a layer of depth. I kind of leaned
- 15:34Speaker 6: towards the first one, But yesterday we were talking about
- 15:37Speaker 6: it on Cash twenty two and bar said he kind
- 15:39Speaker 6: of took it as he just meant camp bodies, like
- 15:41Speaker 6: they don't have the numbers at at tight end right now,
- 15:44Speaker 6: and I sort of feel like they need somebody to
- 15:47Speaker 6: truly replace Julian Hill.
- 15:48Speaker 5: I took him out. Yeah, but I'm always team Evo
- 15:52Speaker 5: everyone he talked about it.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I didn't mean to like make it about me versus him.
- 15:56Speaker 6: I don't what you guys.
- 15:59Speaker 5: The same way.
- 16:00Speaker 7: Yes, I agree with Bart they need more numbers, but
- 16:02Speaker 7: I think he needs someone moregant on the depth chart too.
- 16:06Speaker 3: James Pettigrew wants to know Zone Paul might be watching
- 16:09Speaker 3: the World Cup in the background.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Score So I did. I just want to know.
- 16:14Speaker 6: That's hilarious because he's been pooping on the World Cup
- 16:17Speaker 6: for weeks, so now now he's watching it.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Well, it just shows you that I'm a monkey because
- 16:22Speaker 7: usually it's the Finance channel there c NBC is on
- 16:25Speaker 7: and I'm watching.
- 16:26Speaker 5: You're trying to get with yourself.
- 16:28Speaker 7: I have a bad attention span, but I will say
- 16:31Speaker 7: two forty two into the World Cup was the first
- 16:33Speaker 7: fake injury credit Mexican.
- 16:38Speaker 5: I thought you were going to say, like eight minutes
- 16:39Speaker 5: was the first goal? The first goal, so you guys
- 16:42Speaker 5: say they never score.
- 16:43Speaker 6: They already saw direct.
- 16:44Speaker 7: This to mister World Cup, mister mister international soccer. Is
- 16:47Speaker 7: South Africa terrible because they've allowed like three point blank
- 16:50Speaker 7: shots already in the first eight minutes of the game.
- 16:52Speaker 7: The Balie just gave up a goal to himself.
- 16:54Speaker 5: They're not he gave the part, he gave the pocket
- 16:56Speaker 5: South Africa, he gave the ball right to Mexico and
- 16:58Speaker 5: the guy.
- 16:59Speaker 6: They're not. They're not a powerhouse by any means. And
- 17:02Speaker 6: Mexico is is kind of like the US where they're
- 17:05Speaker 6: not they're not really going to win it, but they're capable.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah, soccer, I love it.
- 17:10Speaker 2: That's that's enough for soccer.
- 17:11Speaker 6: But is the problem that you made the tournament forty
- 17:14Speaker 6: eight teams is that you get teams in there that.
- 17:17Speaker 7: I will say, judging on the first ten minutes, this
- 17:18Speaker 7: game could end six nothing.
- 17:20Speaker 6: That probably won't, but maybe two or three nothing.
- 17:23Speaker 3: All Right, we mentioned we didn't really do attendance in
- 17:28Speaker 3: depth yet today. Uh but you know, Gonzo was there,
- 17:31Speaker 3: didn't really participate much. Booty was there once they got
- 17:36Speaker 3: into seven and seven eleven eleven, he didn't really participate.
- 17:39Speaker 3: He did interesting he did some of the against air drills,
- 17:42Speaker 3: but none of the anywhere whether there might be.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Content he did a little bit of He did that
- 17:46Speaker 5: stuff on Tuesday. Yeah, yeah, it didn't today interesting evolution.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Maybe he's sure, yeah, because he probably Morgan Moses.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Yeah, we spotted him watching though, so good, he's you know,
- 17:56Speaker 4: still upright.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:58Speaker 4: But Jack Westover was the new the new absence and
- 18:00Speaker 4: gay accus. That's, you know, a big piece of the
- 18:03Speaker 4: last couple of days of I mean, I just I
- 18:05Speaker 4: think anybody you talked to is in the same position.
- 18:07Speaker 5: This is a guy at a position you wanted.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And you were on one of your shows this morning, Duce.
- 18:13Speaker 5: And they was talking about Steven Spielberg.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And they asked you about you know, are these really
- 18:18Speaker 3: important in terms of getting.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Behind and everything like that? And I think they are
- 18:22Speaker 2: especially for the young guys.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I do, because they're going to go into training camp
- 18:26Speaker 3: assuming that they know certain things that they learned this spring.
- 18:30Speaker 2: And if you weren't there, and it's and it's you're behind.
- 18:34Speaker 4: But and we know, I mean, I don't know, I
- 18:35Speaker 4: mean guessing he's in the building. I'm guessing I don't
- 18:38Speaker 4: know if that's I mean, I don't know, all right,
- 18:40Speaker 4: So but either way, we know he wasn't on the
- 18:42Speaker 4: field at all. So I mean there's one thing to say, like,
- 18:45Speaker 4: oh a guy got hurt and he's not really participating,
- 18:48Speaker 4: but he's in the meetings and all that kind of stuff,
- 18:49Speaker 4: Like we don't know if he's even in that I believe.
- 18:54Speaker 7: I would just say, like, so, same position Harold Landry
- 18:58Speaker 7: and Gay Bacchus, not the same absence, you know, in
- 19:01Speaker 7: terms of impact of missing this time, it's obviously close
- 19:05Speaker 7: to meaningless for Harold Landry, provided that he's healthy when
- 19:09Speaker 7: he needs to be when the season starts, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 7: in training camp starts and all that. He doesn't need
- 19:14Speaker 7: to learn a system. He understands. He's been in different
- 19:16Speaker 7: systems in the league and had success. Not the case
- 19:19Speaker 7: for a rookie. You know, he has a lot to learn.
- 19:22Speaker 7: This is valuable time for him. I don't know to
- 19:25Speaker 7: answer your question, Mike, I don't know where he is.
- 19:27Speaker 7: I don't know if he is here physically, But this
- 19:32Speaker 7: is I think, you know, Parcells used to say in
- 19:35Speaker 7: Belichick used to say the same thing, like when you're
- 19:38Speaker 7: like a rookie in that stage and you miss days,
- 19:40Speaker 7: they they're almost like every day is almost like a week,
- 19:44Speaker 7: you know, and it just couns on you.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Fans, get fresh, Let the young kid play, and the
- 19:48Speaker 3: coaches he's not read hat. We can't just put him
- 19:51Speaker 3: out there. He doesn't know what's going on and he'll
- 19:54Speaker 3: here be a liability.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what my you know, Mike Smith said. I mean,
- 19:57Speaker 4: it's you can't sugarcoat it. He's not here, he's not
- 19:59Speaker 4: you know, he's get behind. I do think there's an
- 20:01Speaker 4: element of seaball get ball with him on third down,
- 20:04Speaker 4: like hey, like see what you got Like you know,
- 20:06Speaker 4: maybe you can ease him in a little bit easier, yeap.
- 20:08Speaker 4: But it's just it's a glaring position when you look
- 20:10Speaker 4: at this roster and the overall have said it a
- 20:12Speaker 4: couple times in the last week. The top depth chart.
- 20:15Speaker 4: If you roll into the season with the top of
- 20:16Speaker 4: the depth chart across, I think it's a really good team.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I think it's a good team. It's going to compete
- 20:20Speaker 4: in the playoffs and get compete for division titles and
- 20:22Speaker 4: all that stuff. But it's hard not to see, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 4: maybe they believe, I mean, they really seem to believe
- 20:27Speaker 4: in Elijah Ponder. I mean they're pumping him up left
- 20:29Speaker 4: and right, and you know, I thought he was fine
- 20:32Speaker 4: last year and then you know, I think he got
- 20:34Speaker 4: some mop up reps. But that's his place without Landry,
- 20:37Speaker 4: without Acus there right now, that's the glaring spot that
- 20:39Speaker 4: we're all going to be looking at when we get
- 20:41Speaker 4: the training camp.
- 20:41Speaker 6: I think it's a bigger story with the team. I
- 20:43Speaker 6: know a lot of people would say Gonzalez's contract extension
- 20:46Speaker 6: probably is bigger, but I have I'm cautiously optimistic that
- 20:50Speaker 6: that's headed in the right direction just by his presence
- 20:53Speaker 6: here this week, and he hasn't done any of the
- 20:55Speaker 6: live team stuff, but I think being here participating in
- 20:59Speaker 6: some portion of practice. If that contract negotiation was going south,
- 21:03Speaker 6: I don't think that he would be doing all of that.
- 21:06Speaker 6: And with Achis, I mean, the way Rabel talked on
- 21:09Speaker 6: Tuesday about it was not good. You know, the body language,
- 21:12Speaker 6: all of it was not good. I did contract and
- 21:15Speaker 6: injury was like kind of like a two pronged one
- 21:18Speaker 6: where you know, we're talking a lot about him being
- 21:21Speaker 6: in the building, and Rabel said, everybody that's under contract
- 21:24Speaker 6: is here. Well, tried to slide one, Yeah, he's not
- 21:27Speaker 6: under contract, so he can read between the lines there
- 21:30Speaker 6: that he's not here. And an injury wise, you just
- 21:33Speaker 6: worry about what it is. First of all, we don't
- 21:35Speaker 6: really know how did it happen?
- 21:37Speaker 9: How?
- 21:37Speaker 6: Yeah, and second of all, like is this a long
- 21:39Speaker 6: term concern?
- 21:41Speaker 5: And did they know about it? There's a lot of
- 21:43Speaker 5: a lot of unanswered A.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Second frustra.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, like I was thinking about some of
- 21:50Speaker 4: the details of it, like of course, I mean he
- 21:51Speaker 4: played the Senior Bowl. I mean he was at the
- 21:53Speaker 4: combine when everybody gets tested. I know they spent they
- 21:55Speaker 4: said they spent a lot of time with him. It
- 21:57Speaker 4: just gets my brain wondering, like what would I even
- 22:00Speaker 4: speculate of, you know, did he go off on his
- 22:03Speaker 4: own and do something after the fact to.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Participate a combine and then he he had a private
- 22:09Speaker 6: workout for teams closer to the draft in early April
- 22:11Speaker 6: because he didn't do the combine or the pro day
- 22:13Speaker 6: because he had a hamstring issue. And I don't know
- 22:15Speaker 6: if it's the same injury, you know, it could be
- 22:17Speaker 6: something different. But unfortunately, like my mind immediately goes to
- 22:21Speaker 6: some of the guys that had, you know, serious injuries
- 22:25Speaker 6: coming in. You know, you guys always bring up a
- 22:26Speaker 6: guy like Dominique Easley or you know, Sony Michelle with
- 22:29Speaker 6: his knees or whatever the case may be. I have
- 22:31Speaker 6: no idea this is at all like that, but you
- 22:34Speaker 6: just hope it isn't, you know, because this is a
- 22:35Speaker 6: guy that they drafted to kind of be the sweetener
- 22:39Speaker 6: in that room, like you signed Raymond Jones, let calebon
- 22:43Speaker 6: Chase on walk Landry's back, ponders back, and this Actus
- 22:47Speaker 6: was supposed to be the addition. He was supposed to
- 22:49Speaker 6: be the add on to the guys you were bringing back.
- 22:52Speaker 6: So if he's not, you know, as involved as you
- 22:54Speaker 6: hope he was going to be, then you know, that's
- 22:56Speaker 6: a big loss.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I wonder if Rabel is one of those you know
- 23:02Speaker 3: coaches that whole grudges a little bit and puts the
- 23:05Speaker 3: guy in a dog like let's say, training camp. Whatever
- 23:08Speaker 3: this procedure was, it's done, it's over, he comes in,
- 23:11Speaker 3: he signs his contract. Does this get held against him
- 23:15Speaker 3: a little bit? And is he held back or is
- 23:17Speaker 3: it okay now you're out there? Yeah, everything forgiven?
- 23:20Speaker 6: Yeah, And you know, I don't know. I mean I
- 23:22Speaker 6: look at him as a guy that's more like rugged,
- 23:24Speaker 6: like more of a play strained power kind of player.
- 23:28Speaker 6: So I thought early on that first and second down
- 23:31Speaker 6: was actually going to be where he was going to
- 23:32Speaker 6: be at and then third down, you know, if they
- 23:34Speaker 6: don't feel like he quite has the pass rush moves
- 23:38Speaker 6: and the juice and all that stuff yet to be
- 23:40Speaker 6: an impact player in the passing game. Maybe in Elijah
- 23:42Speaker 6: Ponder is the guy that comes on in those situations
- 23:46Speaker 6: and they split it that way. But you know, I
- 23:48Speaker 6: don't know, like early down, like we talked about it
- 23:51Speaker 6: last year, due how they trained up their front mechanics
- 23:53Speaker 6: and sometimes they're spilling, and sometimes they're boxing the edges,
- 23:56Speaker 6: and sometimes guys are dropping and like doing all these
- 23:59Speaker 6: different things. If you don't know you know what what
- 24:02Speaker 6: you're doing, then that's going to be a problem.
- 24:04Speaker 4: I think Acis has the play style and the temperament
- 24:06Speaker 4: that he can get out of the doghouse quickly if
- 24:08Speaker 4: he starts putting it together and he's healthy. I don't
- 24:11Speaker 4: think Abile loves soft tissue injuries, so if we're going
- 24:13Speaker 4: down that hamstring route, that might not.
- 24:14Speaker 6: I mean, that's just the only injury. I hate to speculate,
- 24:17Speaker 6: but that's the only known injury with Achis that we
- 24:20Speaker 6: know about, and nobody's reported anything about what.
- 24:23Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 24:23Speaker 2: You have a hamstring, do you then have a procedure
- 24:26Speaker 2: I guess.
- 24:26Speaker 6: There are some could be. I guess there are some
- 24:29Speaker 6: like strengthening procedures that they have nowadays.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Okay, what's the what's the like the plasma thing?
- 24:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know.
- 24:38Speaker 5: PRP. Yeah, not bunt oread.
- 24:41Speaker 2: He's not to do that.
- 24:43Speaker 5: He's not well, you know, I mean, he is learning
- 24:44Speaker 5: nutrition at the NFL level.
- 24:46Speaker 7: No, what I would the questions that I would have
- 24:49Speaker 7: about Rabel's sort of mentality on Tuesday, because I definitely
- 24:54Speaker 7: agree with you guys that he was annoyed. He definitely
- 24:57Speaker 7: had some level of frustration. Is the frustration maybe not
- 25:02Speaker 7: necessarily with Actus. Is he frustrated at our medical team?
- 25:06Speaker 5: Do we miss something?
- 25:07Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 25:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:09Speaker 7: Did he have a pre existing injury that we missed
- 25:11Speaker 7: or we didn't recognize as being as significant as it
- 25:14Speaker 7: was could be? I mean, again to Fred's point, did
- 25:19Speaker 7: he go from the combine and when he got drafted
- 25:22Speaker 7: and everything and then working out on his own, did
- 25:25Speaker 7: something didn't maybe didn't reveal it right, and then all
- 25:27Speaker 7: of a sudden he shows up and he's like, you
- 25:29Speaker 7: got this, this and this. You can't we can't get
- 25:32Speaker 7: you on the field. You know, you're not ready to
- 25:34Speaker 7: be on the field. So I think there's a lot
- 25:35Speaker 7: of different reasons why Rabel would be frustrated.
- 25:38Speaker 5: We just don't know what.
- 25:39Speaker 2: We just don't know.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Now he's got like fifty days to figure it out,
- 25:43Speaker 5: and we walk in training camp.
- 25:44Speaker 4: This is what everyone's going to be wondering. Is this
- 25:46Speaker 4: guy in the building. I mean, we'll get some heads
- 25:48Speaker 4: up when he hopefully signs a contract. I mean that's
- 25:51Speaker 4: probably something. The second round pick that hasn't signed.
- 25:53Speaker 5: Yeah, Bengals guy, the Bengals guy signed the.
- 25:56Speaker 6: House signed the other day. So he's now the Patriots
- 25:59Speaker 6: lone draft pick on sign and he's the only second
- 26:01Speaker 6: round pick in the league WHO'SUNSOTND.
- 26:02Speaker 7: And I'm going to go on a limb and say
- 26:04Speaker 7: the reason he is unsigned is related to whatever this is. Yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 7: I think it's something like some kind of it.
- 26:11Speaker 5: Could be like did this happen while you were drafted
- 26:13Speaker 5: with the team? Is this what? What is it? And
- 26:14Speaker 5: and non football injury n f I thing where you
- 26:17Speaker 5: can guess the language that they want to include.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I just I think that it's more to like,
- 26:25Speaker 6: you know, Vrabel this morning said he seemed pretty bullish
- 26:28Speaker 6: on the edge group and maybe he knows that this
- 26:31Speaker 6: is a big story right now, so he's trying to
- 26:33Speaker 6: pour cold water on it. But he was hyping up
- 26:36Speaker 6: Ponder and Swinson and you know, uh, you know a
- 26:39Speaker 6: couple of these other guys, uh uh, Draymond Jones, Landry.
- 26:44Speaker 6: I think he made it kind of seem like, no,
- 26:45Speaker 6: this is just veteran management in the spring, like Harold
- 26:48Speaker 6: Anders played a lot of football. He doesn't need to
- 26:50Speaker 6: play right now, you know, that sort of stuff. But
- 26:53Speaker 6: it brings up the question, if you're Elliott Wolf, are
- 26:55Speaker 6: you sitting there saying we need to make some calls,
- 26:57Speaker 6: like we need to bring in another guy, you know,
- 26:59Speaker 6: whether it's a free agent or calling the Giants about
- 27:02Speaker 6: Cavon Thibadeaux or whatever the case may be. Are we
- 27:04Speaker 6: at the point where they need to add a significant piece,
- 27:08Speaker 6: not someone that's just a depth body.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's a it's an odd situation because
- 27:14Speaker 3: every indication, you know, when he was drafted was Wow,
- 27:17Speaker 3: this guy wants to go. You know, he's like, give
- 27:20Speaker 3: me the playbook, I'll give you one hundred percent. I
- 27:22Speaker 3: am let's you know, it seemed like he was just
- 27:25Speaker 3: ready to get out there. So this is an odd
- 27:28Speaker 3: situation and kind of you feel like this must have
- 27:32Speaker 3: been something that happened after the fact, but we don't know.
- 27:35Speaker 3: We have no idea, and Rabel knows and whatever it is,
- 27:39Speaker 3: he's not happy. Like to Paul's point, who he's not
- 27:42Speaker 3: happy with, we don't know that either. No, we don't
- 27:45Speaker 3: know that either.
- 27:46Speaker 4: You hope that at some point we hear the contract
- 27:48Speaker 4: has been signed and then he's out there at least
- 27:51Speaker 4: watching you know, tiny camp. I mean, well, that's something
- 27:54Speaker 4: about the contract is that you know, based off of
- 27:56Speaker 4: Rabel's comments, is that he hasn't signed the contract either,
- 27:59Speaker 4: So he's not even here even in the meetings or
- 28:02Speaker 4: observing or doing any of those types of things out
- 28:04Speaker 4: of practice. So if he was doing all those things,
- 28:06Speaker 4: and I'd feel a lot better about it, like if
- 28:08Speaker 4: he was still watching film in the meeting rooms.
- 28:10Speaker 7: That's why I think it has something to do with
- 28:13Speaker 7: the injury, is why the contract isn't signed, because I
- 28:15Speaker 7: think he'd be here. Yeah, if it was just like negotiating,
- 28:18Speaker 7: like you know, I'm a second round pick. I want
- 28:21Speaker 7: all four years guaranteed. Well, no, we won't offset language.
- 28:24Speaker 7: He's here and he's in meetings, just like everybody else
- 28:26Speaker 7: that's unsigned around the league, you know, leading up to
- 28:29Speaker 7: this point. The fact that he's not here, if he's
- 28:32Speaker 7: not here again, if he's not here, tells me that
- 28:36Speaker 7: it's something like what Mike talked about, like you know,
- 28:39Speaker 7: the Patriots sort of feeling when.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Did it happen? It's not like we should have some
- 28:44Speaker 5: protection against this if this is a thing, which, well,
- 28:46Speaker 5: we're due time.
- 28:47Speaker 7: It's July twenty fifth, is the first day of practice, right, Yeah,
- 28:50Speaker 7: so in those in those days leading up to that,
- 28:53Speaker 7: generally the lists start getting formed, poup and if I
- 28:58Speaker 7: you know who's got what. And my guess is we'll
- 29:02Speaker 7: find out what the state of gay backer. Hopefully we'll
- 29:04Speaker 7: find out before then. Someone will do some reporting for us.
- 29:07Speaker 7: Be nice, get on, get on the Capitol j journalists
- 29:11Speaker 7: will do do our work for us. But yeah, that's
- 29:15Speaker 7: definitely something to monitor.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And so that's our second round pick. Our first round
- 29:20Speaker 3: pick has been active. He's there, full participant.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Playing both both tackles, playing guard all over the place.
- 29:26Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, cross training them all over the place. Today
- 29:29Speaker 6: we saw him repping out left guard next to Campbell
- 29:32Speaker 6: a little bit uh right tackle left Uh, So you know,
- 29:36Speaker 6: all all over the line and clearly trying to maybe
- 29:39Speaker 6: cross train him to be like the sixth guy. You know,
- 29:42Speaker 6: if any if someone goes down, then we're putting you in,
- 29:45Speaker 6: you know, whether besides probably center, I would say, but
- 29:48Speaker 6: everywhere else, like you know, even if it's a guard,
- 29:51Speaker 6: especially left guard. Uh you know you he would play.
- 29:54Speaker 6: So it's been interesting to see how they've been doing that.
- 29:57Speaker 5: He looks athletic to me, like I did.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I don't think his size is overwhelming and he's well proportioned,
- 30:01Speaker 4: but I just I think he moves out of his
- 30:02Speaker 4: stands pretty well. I mean, hard to tell at this
- 30:04Speaker 4: stage of the game, but physically kind of came as advertising.
- 30:08Speaker 7: Definitely more athlete than road grader, no question. He is
- 30:11Speaker 7: a kind of a Will Campbell built, I mean a
- 30:13Speaker 7: little different, but yeah, he's athletic.
- 30:15Speaker 5: You know, It's one funny thing I couldn't help but
- 30:17Speaker 5: kind of rag on the Jets, but with a V.
- 30:20Speaker 2: T R.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Tucker was they were talking and yesterday're interviewing him and
- 30:23Speaker 4: they're asking him about the sled pushing that he did,
- 30:25Speaker 4: and he was talking a little bit about the spring.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Vabels had them all in families and you know, you're
- 30:29Speaker 4: getting to know a small group of players, and he
- 30:31Speaker 4: was just like, you know, there aren't a lot of
- 30:32Speaker 4: teams around the league that are doing this kind of
- 30:34Speaker 4: thing right now, really, and I just couldn't help but think.
- 30:37Speaker 5: I gotta take a shot at the Jets.
- 30:39Speaker 2: You gotta take a shot at.
- 30:40Speaker 6: The Jets, I think he said somewhere. He also said
- 30:42Speaker 6: something about it's good to be at a place with expectations,
- 30:46Speaker 6: like you.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Know, everything, you know, like positive expectations in terms of Jets,
- 30:52Speaker 3: of expectations, they just don't expect to do it.
- 30:54Speaker 6: But he was talking about in terms of practice habits
- 30:57Speaker 6: like that there's like a standard, you know, of practice habits.
- 31:00Speaker 6: And I think we have Patriots way in the spring.
- 31:03Speaker 6: I mean today was just as like as his tents
- 31:05Speaker 6: of a practice as it gets per Yeah, sure, June, Yeah,
- 31:09Speaker 6: it was. They were getting after.
- 31:10Speaker 5: It real quick.
- 31:11Speaker 4: To just a shout out to our photographer Eric Adler,
- 31:14Speaker 4: who got a great shot we just posted on Twitter
- 31:16Speaker 4: of the a J. Brown catch. Got a great four
- 31:19Speaker 4: parter of him going up and getting the ball. Doesn't
- 31:20Speaker 4: really capture the spirit of the thing because you're you're
- 31:22Speaker 4: getting him because I guess he.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Would have been over his left shoulder. Still shots, and
- 31:26Speaker 5: then he turned to his right, give me still shot.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Show me. That's as close as we're gonna get approved
- 31:31Speaker 5: by me.
- 31:32Speaker 2: By the way, Hell yeah, all right. Eight five past
- 31:34Speaker 2: five hundred is the hot line.
- 31:37Speaker 3: You see that on the bottom of your screen. Podcast
- 31:39Speaker 3: at Patriots dot com is the email address.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Let's go to the phones.
- 31:43Speaker 3: We got people at this weird hour of the day
- 31:46Speaker 3: for Patriots Unfiltered still tuning in live appreciate that.
- 31:50Speaker 2: We'll go to Herman d C.
- 31:51Speaker 6: What's up, herm Hey, what's going on?
- 31:54Speaker 9: And then.
- 31:58Speaker 11: I'm thinking, jokingly, you guys should probably following seasons assist
- 32:02Speaker 11: against the stillers, because that was a short thing called
- 32:05Speaker 11: Forged and.
- 32:06Speaker 9: Steel on YouTube.
- 32:07Speaker 11: But anyway, my ask your question is this, when did
- 32:13Speaker 11: Robert Kraft developed this reputation for quote unquote being cheap right?
- 32:19Speaker 11: Because I think when you listen to you know, the
- 32:23Speaker 11: broader Boston sports media, you would think that he'd be,
- 32:25Speaker 11: you know, the owner of the Cincinnati Bengals, because I mean,
- 32:29Speaker 11: I was fairly young at that time when I was
- 32:31Speaker 11: when when he paid Drew Bledsoe cully that was you know,
- 32:36Speaker 11: partly I think the biggest contract at that time. But
- 32:39Speaker 11: then Bill Belichick came in, and I'm assuming he told
- 32:42Speaker 11: Robert Craft because let's do things differently. So Robert Kraft
- 32:46Speaker 11: adjusted to his head coaches. I guess decision making process
- 32:50Speaker 11: in terms of contracts, and now it seems that he's
- 32:54Speaker 11: made reverting back to pre Belichick. So my question again
- 32:59Speaker 11: to go back to was initially asking my question to
- 33:01Speaker 11: you was, I guess when and how they rub a
- 33:05Speaker 11: Kraft develop excuse me the repetition will being cheap not
- 33:10Speaker 11: taking up.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I don't really understand the question.
- 33:16Speaker 7: Well, I I do plan so so was the highest
- 33:19Speaker 7: paid player and you know, the highest paid quarterback for
- 33:22Speaker 7: like ten minutes, just like Tom Brady was periodically. Like
- 33:26Speaker 7: I don't really quarterbacks are different. Like when they're up
- 33:30Speaker 7: and you have one, they become the highest paid guy.
- 33:34Speaker 7: Now Brady certainly could have gotten more than he did
- 33:37Speaker 7: throughout his career, but he was very highly paid throughout
- 33:40Speaker 7: his career. But that's the quarterback. The rest of it,
- 33:43Speaker 7: I don't think is all that different. I don't I
- 33:46Speaker 7: don't really see these ebbs and flows. I think they've
- 33:48Speaker 7: been a very consistent ownership group, and you know they've
- 33:53Speaker 7: they've given out some big contracts, most of which have
- 33:55Speaker 7: been okay, some of which have come back to haunt them.
- 33:58Speaker 7: But I think that they've been pretty consistent.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Well, I think there's two things. A he's a local
- 34:04Speaker 3: guy and he's not a guy known for like owning
- 34:08Speaker 3: Walmart or owning oil fields or things like that. So
- 34:12Speaker 3: I think he came into the league as a former
- 34:14Speaker 3: season ticket holder and not having the deep pockets that
- 34:18Speaker 3: some owners have.
- 34:19Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 34:21Speaker 3: Then then the second thing is the way he and
- 34:23Speaker 3: Belichick ran the team. You know, they're always looking for value,
- 34:28Speaker 3: and I think partly it's you know, Robert Kraft leaning
- 34:32Speaker 3: on him, saying I'm paying you the highest amount of
- 34:36Speaker 3: any coach in sports. You know, sometimes you're gonna have
- 34:40Speaker 3: to do more with less. And the other thing is
- 34:43Speaker 3: Belichick the way he would structure his locker room. I
- 34:46Speaker 3: think the hierarchy of salaries, believing or not, was very
- 34:49Speaker 3: important to Belichick.
- 34:51Speaker 2: He always made sure.
- 34:52Speaker 3: That certain guys didn't make more than other guys and
- 34:55Speaker 3: always structured it that way.
- 34:57Speaker 2: And then he rewarded guys you.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Know, like, uh, who was uh, you know, James Sanders, James.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Sanders heverwored guys like that that were, you know, his guys,
- 35:10Speaker 3: but who made what on his team.
- 35:12Speaker 2: He paid attention to that.
- 35:14Speaker 5: So yeah, it was important to Bill.
- 35:16Speaker 7: I mean Tom set the bar and no one, no
- 35:19Speaker 7: one was going to no one was going to approach him,
- 35:22Speaker 7: but he would he would think not like I used
- 35:26Speaker 7: to get frustrated because I felt like they would waste
- 35:29Speaker 7: money that was considered like Nichols and Dimes with no
- 35:35Speaker 7: concern whatsoever. But I mean, guys just got contracts that
- 35:38Speaker 7: they didn't have to get. They were like minimum like
- 35:41Speaker 7: kind of players, and then they would sign them early,
- 35:45Speaker 7: extend them and get them out. But then you know,
- 35:47Speaker 7: the big money guys like Seymour are getting dragged through
- 35:50Speaker 7: in the mud, Logan Mankins, you know, get you know,
- 35:53Speaker 7: these guys end up getting traded because they wanted to
- 35:55Speaker 7: get paid market value. That's what I used to get frustrated,
- 35:58Speaker 7: And I do think that was to Herm's point. I
- 36:00Speaker 7: think that was as much Belichick's philosophy as Robert krafts
- 36:04Speaker 7: oh and Belichick strongly believed in that.
- 36:06Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, but the real cash spending stuff is
- 36:08Speaker 6: coming from your shows, Paul. I mean they beat the
- 36:11Speaker 6: drum on that. Every time I'm listening to them, they're
- 36:14Speaker 6: talking about that.
- 36:15Speaker 7: And it's not just the page. I think that's been
- 36:17Speaker 7: very consistent. At my point, I don't think there's been
- 36:19Speaker 7: these ebbs and flows now. I think they're very consistent.
- 36:21Speaker 6: And to be fair, like they give it to the
- 36:23Speaker 6: Red Sox plenty about it as well and all, and
- 36:25Speaker 6: you know, their equal opportunity when it comes to that topic.
- 36:28Speaker 6: But over the last couple of off seasons, I've been
- 36:30Speaker 6: pleasantly surprised by the spending and how much they're going
- 36:34Speaker 6: for it. You know, two off seasons in a row
- 36:36Speaker 6: they've they've been spenders, you know, trading for aj Brown
- 36:39Speaker 6: and paying Romeo Dobbs and yep. Making some big moves
- 36:42Speaker 6: this offseason. After the big haul that they had in
- 36:44Speaker 6: free agency last year where they paid Milton Williams the
- 36:47Speaker 6: biggest free agent contract of the entire offseason, I wasn't
- 36:51Speaker 6: fully expecting back to back big expenditures because in twenty
- 36:56Speaker 6: one they didn't do that. They spent big in twenty
- 36:58Speaker 6: one and they pulled back two. Maybe that was Bill,
- 37:01Speaker 6: you know, that was some the.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Consistent pursuit of high, big name wide receivers over the
- 37:07Speaker 4: last two years, I think has been to me the
- 37:08Speaker 4: biggest shift post Bill. It's the Calvin Ridley's, it's the
- 37:12Speaker 4: Brandon Ayux, it's the AJ Browns. It's there in on
- 37:16Speaker 4: those guys and you know Bill like that those No, I.
- 37:20Speaker 5: Don't know if he wanted those guys.
- 37:21Speaker 4: And it seems to me like Elliott Wolf and Bryan
- 37:24Speaker 4: Cowden in this group now understand especially at this point.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I think, you know what's frustrating for me was just
- 37:29Speaker 4: when you heard them talk about having Mac Jones and
- 37:31Speaker 4: being like, you know, we've got him in this this
- 37:33Speaker 4: now is the time to do it, and they never
- 37:35Speaker 4: really did it.
- 37:35Speaker 5: You know, they never really gave him any of these
- 37:37Speaker 5: kind of guys.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Now, they've missed out on Ayuk and probably for the best,
- 37:41Speaker 4: you know, they missed out on you know, Calvin Ridley,
- 37:43Speaker 4: but they got AJ Brown And you know, I just
- 37:45Speaker 4: think that that dedication showing that they value what we've
- 37:48Speaker 4: talked about so.
- 37:49Speaker 7: Much and those those things that we've been talking about
- 37:51Speaker 7: the whole offseason about like the commitment and the resources
- 37:53Speaker 7: they're devoting to the offense, and to like there was
- 37:56Speaker 7: a an excitement in Drake's voice yesterday.
- 38:00Speaker 5: I don't know if Fred if you know what, I
- 38:02Speaker 5: got a chance to talk to Drake Man. I've got
- 38:03Speaker 5: a picture of it.
- 38:04Speaker 7: No, but there was like I asked him that question
- 38:06Speaker 7: about it and it's not his profile pick he was
- 38:12Speaker 7: there was I just said, you know how we were like,
- 38:14Speaker 7: you have two first round tackles, you go in two
- 38:16Speaker 7: big name, high, you know, high priced wide receivers. That's
- 38:20Speaker 7: a lot of confidence in you that there's like they're
- 38:23Speaker 7: gonna get that they they're worth investing because.
- 38:26Speaker 5: They have you.
- 38:27Speaker 7: And he was like, it's impossible not to get excited
- 38:30Speaker 7: about playing with those kinds of players, and you could
- 38:33Speaker 7: hear it in his voice, you could see it.
- 38:35Speaker 5: In his face. And that's been so cool a lot.
- 38:36Speaker 5: I mean, Diggs last year and then Brown.
- 38:38Speaker 4: I mean my first few year is not a lot
- 38:40Speaker 4: of like elite talented wide receivers on the field, and
- 38:43Speaker 4: when you see these guys in which special athletes there
- 38:46Speaker 4: and you know, it was like last year with Diggs,
- 38:47Speaker 4: it was just something I didn't really anticipate. Was just
- 38:51Speaker 4: the way he runs routes and the way he kind
- 38:53Speaker 4: of tempos things and he's really hard to get a
- 38:55Speaker 4: beat on that's not a J.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Brown.
- 38:57Speaker 4: AJ Brown wins his own way, but he's another one
- 39:00Speaker 4: who's a special athlete.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Different, But I say, watch.
- 39:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I would say a J. Brown is more specimen.
- 39:05Speaker 6: Yeah Diggs was more crafty.
- 39:07Speaker 7: Yeah that's but to me, it's the value of having
- 39:11Speaker 7: an elite receiver. And you know, I just want to
- 39:13Speaker 7: speak on behalf of Evan and I. We want to
- 39:16Speaker 7: welcome Mike to the town, to the talent portion of
- 39:19Speaker 7: the show because that's the kind of stuff that we've
- 39:22Speaker 7: been talking about.
- 39:23Speaker 6: I said to Pauli after he made the catch today,
- 39:25Speaker 6: I was like, I think it was Jalen Hurts's fault.
- 39:29Speaker 5: He goes, I'm not sure, but I think it may
- 39:31Speaker 5: have been Jalen.
- 39:31Speaker 4: H Well, that's you know, one more thing just along
- 39:34Speaker 4: those lines that talking to some people, you know, along
- 39:36Speaker 4: the sideline. It's just what stands out to me about
- 39:38Speaker 4: this twenty twenty six Patriots team right now is the
- 39:41Speaker 4: size and the physicality that there. It's going to be
- 39:43Speaker 4: a different team this year. Like you know, I bring
- 39:46Speaker 4: up Gilliam first, but A J. Brown is a big player.
- 39:48Speaker 4: We know Mac Collins is a big physical player. Dobbs
- 39:51Speaker 4: is a pretty big player. They just they're going to
- 39:54Speaker 4: be harder to play against with some of these the
- 39:56Speaker 4: physicality that they have, you know, not just at the
- 39:59Speaker 4: receiver position, but now now you know, having a legit
- 40:01Speaker 4: proven fullback, that's another option for them to go to Romandre.
- 40:05Speaker 5: We know he's a big, physical guy.
- 40:07Speaker 4: I just I'm excited to see this evolution because I
- 40:09Speaker 4: think they're going to be much harder to play against
- 40:11Speaker 4: on offense this year.
- 40:12Speaker 6: That was an emphasis. So when we go we're at
- 40:14Speaker 6: the combine, he said that to us that they needed
- 40:16Speaker 6: to get stronger and get bigger, and be more physical
- 40:19Speaker 6: and win the line of scrimmage more because I think
- 40:21Speaker 6: they felt in the playoffs that they kind of got dominated,
- 40:24Speaker 6: especially offensively on the line of scrimmage. So I think
- 40:26Speaker 6: they really went out and tried to seek players and
- 40:29Speaker 6: unfortunately one of them got hurt with Julian Hill, but
- 40:32Speaker 6: they tried to seek players that were going to make
- 40:34Speaker 6: them a more physical, you know, January style football team
- 40:37Speaker 6: and less so reliant maybe on you know, the deep
- 40:40Speaker 6: passing and stuff like that that doesn't always travel. So
- 40:43Speaker 6: we're we're seeing it. And those receivers are huge, like
- 40:46Speaker 6: like AJ Brown, and Romeo Dobbs are just flat out
- 40:48Speaker 6: big dudes. And Eli Raarden is a big guy too,
- 40:51Speaker 6: So they've definitely added a lot of big bodies.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Anthony's and Seattle. What's up, Anthony?
- 40:57Speaker 12: It was a bread Paul deuce Evan doing all right?
- 41:01Speaker 2: YO know Alex today? I know Alex today.
- 41:04Speaker 5: He's busy.
- 41:05Speaker 12: All right, I've been when I want to catch catch
- 41:07Speaker 12: you guys later. And then when we get into the
- 41:09Speaker 12: off season shows. Her and Paul talked a little bit
- 41:11Speaker 12: about the show My Friends and Neighbors with John Hamm
- 41:14Speaker 12: and uh, I wanted to get into that. Uh hey, uh,
- 41:18Speaker 12: I gotta tell you. Uh Herm is a he's a
- 41:21Speaker 12: He's a hell of a conversation starter man. He always
- 41:23Speaker 12: asks good questions. And uh, Fred, you took the words
- 41:26Speaker 12: out of my mouth. I think crapp let Bill run
- 41:28Speaker 12: the show and.
- 41:29Speaker 6: Bill was cheap.
- 41:31Speaker 12: But uh, the reason for my call is, uh so,
- 41:34Speaker 12: you guys have gotten me a little bit giddy today.
- 41:36Speaker 12: I'm gonna play the role of Wilhelman film today. You know,
- 41:40Speaker 12: I've seen read multiple reports of you know Drake May
- 41:43Speaker 12: you know his comfort in the ear or two and
- 41:45Speaker 12: in the system, and you know I take more.
- 41:48Speaker 13: I take h.
- 41:49Speaker 12: It means more to me when when I hear from
- 41:51Speaker 12: you guys directly. So I did see the video, the
- 41:55Speaker 12: Camp Update video that uh Paul inducedd and you know
- 42:00Speaker 12: you said that, like, you know Drake May's comfort and
- 42:02Speaker 12: command of the system, and he said he's primed for
- 42:04Speaker 12: a leap, and I'm thinking, like, what what leaf could
- 42:07Speaker 12: he possibly take? I mean, if he takes the leaf,
- 42:09Speaker 12: he's gonna he's gonna be the best quarterback in football.
- 42:11Speaker 12: And then Evan talking about him yesterday on Catch twenty
- 42:15Speaker 12: two said kind of similar things, you know of his
- 42:17Speaker 12: command and control of the system. And I got two
- 42:20Speaker 12: questions and and I'll get off the air. One is
- 42:23Speaker 12: for Paul. Is h you often said that, you know,
- 42:26Speaker 12: during this h during this time of year, and I
- 42:29Speaker 12: get a subsama party and everything. During the Brady era,
- 42:32Speaker 12: the ball never touched the ground, So would you say
- 42:35Speaker 12: that this has been Brady esque? And then my other
- 42:38Speaker 12: question is now and this is just not a This
- 42:41Speaker 12: is not a what do you call it a prediction?
- 42:45Speaker 12: This is more of just kind of what you see.
- 42:47Speaker 12: And I'll tell you what I think, but I want
- 42:49Speaker 12: to know what you guys think. Trend wise, do you
- 42:51Speaker 12: would you say that Drake May is trending toward greatness
- 42:55Speaker 12: because I believe he is. Now it's only two years
- 42:58Speaker 12: in and he's going into the year three, very in
- 43:00Speaker 12: his career, very very early. We're talking about training camp
- 43:03Speaker 12: right now too. But I play through two years. I
- 43:05Speaker 12: think he's trending toward greatness, and I'd be interested in knowing.
- 43:08Speaker 12: Do you guys feel the same way?
- 43:10Speaker 2: I thank you?
- 43:12Speaker 3: So two things there, I would say in terms of
- 43:16Speaker 3: the ball not touching Tuesday was like that, not today, it.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Was not Brady like yeah, not today either day.
- 43:23Speaker 2: And I think trending toward greatness, I wouldn't say that yet.
- 43:27Speaker 2: I see that he has the tools to be great, But.
- 43:30Speaker 3: The one thing that I think is needed in the
- 43:33Speaker 3: leap for that leap is upstairs when it comes to
- 43:36Speaker 3: the better defenses. And we saw it during the playoffs
- 43:40Speaker 3: that that still is something that we need to see
- 43:44Speaker 3: before we can say he's he's great.
- 43:47Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think the idea of him being
- 43:50Speaker 6: in the in the second year in the system is
- 43:53Speaker 6: hopefully having more tools at his disposal to play against
- 43:56Speaker 6: those better defenses. It's one thing that you know when
- 43:59Speaker 6: you're playing some of the the bottom ten teams in
- 44:01Speaker 6: the league. If you're better, you're better, right, you know,
- 44:03Speaker 6: But get to play Seattle and Houston and those great defenses.
- 44:08Speaker 6: Hopefully there's some more things at his disposal, especially at
- 44:12Speaker 6: the line of scrimmage. You know, they've talked a little
- 44:14Speaker 6: bit about it. Maybe it's more us talking about it,
- 44:16Speaker 6: but it's a league wide conversation about offenses trying to
- 44:20Speaker 6: play faster and using more tempo and getting to the
- 44:23Speaker 6: line of scrimmage quicker and out of the huddle quicker,
- 44:25Speaker 6: and all those different types of things. And the Patriots
- 44:28Speaker 6: last year were twenty eighth in the NFL in terms
- 44:31Speaker 6: of time between plays, so they took a lot of
- 44:34Speaker 6: time in between plays. They were dead last in the
- 44:37Speaker 6: league in no huddle usage. Now that could have been
- 44:40Speaker 6: because they were winning a lot, but they also just
- 44:42Speaker 6: didn't use a lot of no huddle. So, can you
- 44:45Speaker 6: get some tempo to your offense and maybe that helps
- 44:48Speaker 6: you slow down some of those defenses that are coming
- 44:51Speaker 6: after him. There's just something to throw him off balance,
- 44:54Speaker 6: you know, little things like that that I think, because
- 44:57Speaker 6: he has such a grasp of the language of the system,
- 45:00Speaker 6: can go ahead and now use some of these tricks.
- 45:01Speaker 5: I just think they've done everything. I mean, all the
- 45:04Speaker 5: tools are there.
- 45:05Speaker 4: I mean, the protection they're trying to build, that they're
- 45:07Speaker 4: bringing in, the quality wide receivers. You've got Josh McDaniels,
- 45:11Speaker 4: who you know is probably gonna end up in the
- 45:12Speaker 4: Patriots All Fame before it's all said and done.
- 45:14Speaker 5: I mean, the guy's seen and done at all.
- 45:16Speaker 4: I just think it's all on Drake and it's probably
- 45:18Speaker 4: a little bit of pressure, and I think it's gonna
- 45:19Speaker 4: be harder this year. And I think in some ways
- 45:21Speaker 4: last year we'll hang over his head a little bit
- 45:23Speaker 4: when he's not completing a large percentage and an unreal
- 45:26Speaker 4: percentage of his passes. But you know, I'm just hopeful that,
- 45:30Speaker 4: like Evan said, he's gonna have the tools to get
- 45:31Speaker 4: through this year.
- 45:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:32Speaker 6: Like I remember when Brady would like, go to that
- 45:34Speaker 6: NASCAR package and you just have one word, and I
- 45:38Speaker 6: would tell all eleven guys what they were doing on
- 45:40Speaker 6: the field, and it ammed a lot of their plays
- 45:42Speaker 6: after actually, like NBA legends, so like Jordan, Charles Barkley,
- 45:47Speaker 6: things like that, and they would just be able to
- 45:50Speaker 6: stay in the same personnel grouping and run all the
- 45:52Speaker 6: whole gamut of the playbook out of that one personnel grouping,
- 45:56Speaker 6: and you just get the defense. You catch them in
- 45:58Speaker 6: a certain defensive grouping, and now all of a sudden,
- 46:01Speaker 6: you just hit you spam a certain button and they
- 46:03Speaker 6: just can't stop it, and they can't substitute, they can't
- 46:06Speaker 6: call plays from the sideline. So they're kind of basic
- 46:09Speaker 6: and what they're running, and like, those are the types
- 46:11Speaker 6: of things that when you get a mastery of a system,
- 46:13Speaker 6: you're able to do a lot more.
- 46:15Speaker 2: You're dictating.
- 46:16Speaker 4: I mean, wouldn't be so interesting just to hear Tom
- 46:18Speaker 4: Brady and Drake may kind of have a conversation just
- 46:20Speaker 4: about the development as quarterback and you know, the things
- 46:23Speaker 4: you learn, and just every time I hear Brady going
- 46:26Speaker 4: on these shows and talk about his development of quarterback
- 46:30Speaker 4: and how they teams don't develop quarterbacks anymore, I'm sure
- 46:33Speaker 4: he looks at what Josh is doing with Drake and saying,
- 46:34Speaker 4: this is how it should be.
- 46:36Speaker 5: They're going to try to develop this game.
- 46:40Speaker 6: There was one there was one clip of Brady. It
- 46:43Speaker 6: was when Gronk was here last year, and he's walking
- 46:45Speaker 6: on the field with Drake and they facetimed Tom Brady
- 46:49Speaker 6: and Gronk said to Brady, you know, we actually we
- 46:52Speaker 6: threw some passes. I caught some balls from him and
- 46:54Speaker 6: Brady was like, oh yeah, and He's like, yeah, we
- 46:56Speaker 6: ran Charles Barkley. And Brady loved it. He absolutely loved it.
- 46:59Speaker 6: And I was like, isn't that the type of stuff
- 47:02Speaker 6: that Deuce is talking about? That, Like, it would be
- 47:04Speaker 6: great to hear the two of them talk about the
- 47:06Speaker 6: same system in the same language that they're both speaking, and.
- 47:09Speaker 5: Like the learning curve and what's what's hard?
- 47:12Speaker 4: You know, what are the hard things to really you know,
- 47:14Speaker 4: nail down and you know, I mean they go back
- 47:17Speaker 4: to Bill saying, you know, Brady midway through two thousand
- 47:19Speaker 4: and three was when he really felt like he was
- 47:21Speaker 4: cooking with gas.
- 47:23Speaker 5: You know, is it going to take that long for Drake?
- 47:24Speaker 5: Is it going to take longer? Is it going to happen?
- 47:26Speaker 2: You know, Brady?
- 47:27Speaker 5: They don't know, you don't know?
- 47:29Speaker 2: Yeh, nateson Connecticut? What's up? Nate?
- 47:32Speaker 14: Hey, can you guys here?
- 47:33Speaker 2: We will yeah, we can.
- 47:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 14: So this is going to be a little redundant for
- 47:39Speaker 14: some of you guys. But AJ Brown, I've got two questions.
- 47:43Speaker 14: First off, and him was initially signed. Looking at a
- 47:47Speaker 14: whole bunch of social media posts, a lot of the
- 47:50Speaker 14: comics said, can't wait for the week out for the
- 47:53Speaker 14: week eight crash out, and you know, so long with
- 47:56Speaker 14: him crashing out? Do you think that is going to
- 47:58Speaker 14: happen at all this year?
- 48:00Speaker 10: And uh?
- 48:00Speaker 14: Second off, him wearing number one, I think doesn't really
- 48:05Speaker 14: fit him, considering that number one isn't very a good
- 48:08Speaker 14: number here in New England.
- 48:09Speaker 12: You know, Jalen Polk and.
- 48:11Speaker 14: Kill Harry has just had a bad history Smith. Uh so, yeah,
- 48:14Speaker 14: I just want you guys thoughts on that it's in
- 48:16Speaker 14: a while.
- 48:16Speaker 5: They called him, Okay, I'll leave the number for Paul,
- 48:20Speaker 5: But I love Nate. I couldn't care less what number
- 48:24Speaker 5: they were.
- 48:25Speaker 3: I figured you'd be all in on this one. His
- 48:28Speaker 3: numbers in uniform right up your ballet.
- 48:30Speaker 6: So he's going back to his college number. Yeah, so
- 48:33Speaker 6: you were you weren't one in college? And he said
- 48:35Speaker 6: that he always wanted to wear one in the pros,
- 48:37Speaker 6: but in Tennessee and Philadelphia one was already taken when
- 48:40Speaker 6: he got there, so he wasn't able to do it.
- 48:43Speaker 6: And then he also kind of, you know, paid respects
- 48:46Speaker 6: to Julian Edelman and said that he didn't want to
- 48:48Speaker 6: take eleven because Edelman, and so then we got the one.
- 48:52Speaker 4: In regards to the crash out, I just feel like
- 48:54Speaker 4: we're in the honeymoon phase right now and it's impossible
- 48:56Speaker 4: to be He seems like he's so happy, like I
- 48:58Speaker 4: can't even imagine.
- 48:59Speaker 7: How know something like like I'm sure that they didn't
- 49:02Speaker 7: see it coming in Philly either, but it happened all
- 49:05Speaker 7: the quarterbacks.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Let's hope. Let's hope that they don't. He doesn't ever
- 49:09Speaker 5: like a falling out with Drake May.
- 49:12Speaker 2: You know, I can't imagine that's impossible, at least.
- 49:16Speaker 6: Smiling a couple of years in Philly before it went sour.
- 49:20Speaker 5: But they were like best friends, I know.
- 49:23Speaker 6: But I'm just saying this is like the godfather of
- 49:25Speaker 6: his child. The first two years in Philly, he was
- 49:27Speaker 6: a first team All Pro receiver. But I'm saying a
- 49:30Speaker 6: couple of years. But but I also don't think that
- 49:33Speaker 6: he's as close to May as he was with her.
- 49:36Speaker 6: And there was a falling out, that's all I'm saying.
- 49:38Speaker 6: There was There's no way, there's no way of knowing like.
- 49:43Speaker 4: The unknowable, you just can't try to figure it out
- 49:46Speaker 4: right now when it seems like the vibes you're asking me, now,
- 49:48Speaker 4: I think something's going to happen this year. Nope, I
- 49:51Speaker 4: think I think it's at least one year. It will
- 49:53Speaker 4: be like a honeymoon.
- 49:54Speaker 6: Comes with the territory, like if you want this kind
- 49:56Speaker 6: of talent at that position, they're all like this, like
- 49:59Speaker 6: did was like it, A J. Brown's going to be
- 50:02Speaker 6: like it.
- 50:02Speaker 4: But from what we've seen here too, like Mini can'tes,
- 50:05Speaker 4: it's like they're going to do everything they can to
- 50:06Speaker 4: get this guy involved.
- 50:07Speaker 5: So you know, it's.
- 50:09Speaker 2: It's been a lot like yeah, you know, put him
- 50:11Speaker 2: on many times.
- 50:12Speaker 5: You think you'll be targeted this year at least one twentieth,
- 50:15Speaker 5: not more so what he did last year.
- 50:18Speaker 7: But the damage had been done, That's all I'm saying.
- 50:21Speaker 7: But they had a personal following out right exactly.
- 50:25Speaker 5: That's exactly what I'm saying. There's no way of not
- 50:27Speaker 5: like you can't predict personal fallouts.
- 50:29Speaker 2: How could you possibly know.
- 50:30Speaker 7: What somebody's gonna assault his mother and he's you and
- 50:33Speaker 7: you and I are going to get a fighter two
- 50:35Speaker 7: years are ball?
- 50:39Speaker 2: I could how do you know? Could Colleen's in Houston?
- 50:43Speaker 5: Hey Colleen, Hey guys, Uh, thank you for taking my cow.
- 50:48Speaker 15: So first of all, uh, last time I called him,
- 50:54Speaker 15: I was saying before it's Super Bowl that Marty mob
- 50:57Speaker 15: Who was gonna make a great play in the Super Bowl.
- 51:01Speaker 15: So I am wrong about things, but I am upset
- 51:09Speaker 15: about Gabe Akis. I really think that he could be
- 51:13Speaker 15: a good player, but he's focusing on not the.
- 51:17Speaker 10: Game and not how do you know that?
- 51:21Speaker 2: I don't know?
- 51:22Speaker 15: Tell me I'm wrong.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 5: We have not injured and had surgery on something. We
- 51:26Speaker 5: just don't know what it was.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't know what the situation is. So this
- 51:30Speaker 3: could be completely out of his control. It could be
- 51:32Speaker 3: just an unfortunate thing that happened. We really don't know
- 51:36Speaker 3: what's going on.
- 51:37Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, you guys know enough that it has
- 51:42Speaker 15: nothing to.
- 51:42Speaker 5: Do with the surgery, right like, no, oh, no, no, no,
- 51:46Speaker 5: it's exactly the opposite. It's exactly the opposite. He had
- 51:50Speaker 5: surgery on an injury.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Yeah, the coach came right out and said he had
- 51:53Speaker 3: a procedure. Yeah, so he wouldn't say that if it
- 51:56Speaker 3: wasn't true.
- 51:58Speaker 15: No, No, I'm I'm not saying they're lying. I I
- 52:03Speaker 15: guarantee he had a surgery. I know that that's true.
- 52:07Speaker 15: But is it why he's not around?
- 52:11Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know.
- 52:13Speaker 5: I don't know either, why he's not around. I don't know.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. So I'm hoping
- 52:19Speaker 2: for the best, Colleen, hoping for the best. Yeah, thank you,
- 52:23Speaker 2: all right, thanks? Thanks? Yeah, I mean I like that call.
- 52:27Speaker 5: Yeah, controversy, Sure, it's my kind of call.
- 52:30Speaker 6: I mean, as she implying that it's the contract.
- 52:33Speaker 7: Yeah, I think she's implying that he's his head's not
- 52:36Speaker 7: where it should be because he's worried about other things.
- 52:39Speaker 3: I mean maybe, but it's kind of slotted in. There's
- 52:42Speaker 3: only some particulars second.
- 52:44Speaker 6: Round point all thirty one other second round picks have
- 52:46Speaker 6: signed now. So like if you look at he was
- 52:49Speaker 6: drafted fifty five, you look at fifty four, and you
- 52:51Speaker 6: look at fifty six, and it's like, this is what
- 52:53Speaker 6: everybody's getting. Dude, Like, I don't know why.
- 52:55Speaker 7: I think Mike is onto something when he says I
- 52:57Speaker 7: wonder if it's like an NFI situation, something they didn't
- 53:00Speaker 7: know about, something happened to wait for.
- 53:01Speaker 5: Football, trying to get protection on it.
- 53:03Speaker 7: But it's kind of silly to just keep speculating when
- 53:05Speaker 7: we really don't have any idea.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Yea, Eddie's in New York.
- 53:08Speaker 10: Hey, Eddie, Hey, how's it going, guys?
- 53:11Speaker 5: Okay, okay?
- 53:13Speaker 2: Good?
- 53:14Speaker 10: Love to show love you guys. Look forward to it
- 53:16Speaker 10: every week. Two part question here, number one one. I
- 53:20Speaker 10: don't know there's two parts because they kind of correlated.
- 53:23Speaker 10: I know it's early in training camp and it's hard
- 53:26Speaker 10: to even read what Rabel's mentality is, but I'm pretty
- 53:31Speaker 10: much set at aj Brown one Dobs being number two.
- 53:35Speaker 10: My question is, do you guys think that if you
- 53:38Speaker 10: put in Mac Collins at three as an effort to
- 53:41Speaker 10: go bigger instead of going faster, do you think that's
- 53:44Speaker 10: the best way to go for success or do you
- 53:47Speaker 10: plug against somebody faster. You know, we're more technique at three,
- 53:52Speaker 10: and you know, for more success because again, Drake May
- 53:55Speaker 10: is a six.
- 53:56Speaker 5: Or four guy.
- 53:56Speaker 10: The wide receivers are big, and he made an effort
- 53:59Speaker 10: to go bigger. Bigger doesn't always equal to faster. Obviously,
- 54:04Speaker 10: I'm trying to lean towards what's more successful, and me
- 54:08Speaker 10: being a viewer and and you know, constant tato. You
- 54:11Speaker 10: guys have more insight than I do. Which one you
- 54:14Speaker 10: think they should go with Collins at three in essence
- 54:18Speaker 10: to go bigger or plug in a smaller, shiftier guy
- 54:22Speaker 10: at three. Thanks for taking call.
- 54:23Speaker 2: I think it's a it's a fair question.
- 54:25Speaker 5: It's an excellent question.
- 54:26Speaker 6: Yeah, it'd be a very situational Exactly they going up against?
- 54:31Speaker 3: What kind of defense do they play? Where the matchups,
- 54:34Speaker 3: what's the situation in the game. But I heard the
- 54:37Speaker 3: at about it though.
- 54:38Speaker 9: You know, like a J.
- 54:39Speaker 6: Brown and Romeo Dobbs are bigger, sturdier, power oriented players. Ideally,
- 54:45Speaker 6: like a Kyle Williams or Pop Douglas in passing situations,
- 54:48Speaker 6: is the third guy to give you some speed in
- 54:51Speaker 6: some separation, Like if you put Brown Dobbs and Booty
- 54:54Speaker 6: or Brown Dobs in Hollins, it's it's got great size
- 54:58Speaker 6: and they have their own strengths, but it's not a
- 55:00Speaker 6: very fast group. But if you have one guy like
- 55:03Speaker 6: Booty or Kyle Williams or excuse me, Popping Kyle and
- 55:07Speaker 6: Kyle Williams, then you have a little bit of burst
- 55:09Speaker 6: there with one of the guys.
- 55:13Speaker 5: Pop Douglas Williams you have a.
- 55:16Speaker 6: Little bit of burst there.
- 55:17Speaker 5: I thought Pop's had a good day for you. Pop's
- 55:20Speaker 5: had a good couple of days. I just think he's
- 55:21Speaker 5: been active.
- 55:22Speaker 4: And Drake was praising I remember last year they asked
- 55:24Speaker 4: him about Pop and he was like, he's got to
- 55:26Speaker 4: know the right place to be. I think the last
- 55:28Speaker 4: year was you know, he hinted that Pop Douglas wasn't
- 55:31Speaker 4: always where he needs to be. Ask him this year
- 55:33Speaker 4: about him and he says he's where he needs to be.
- 55:34Speaker 4: So that's why I consistently showing up Eddie.
- 55:38Speaker 7: You know, Like it's a great question, and there are
- 55:40Speaker 7: those two scenarios that you guys just unfolded. If it's
- 55:45Speaker 7: a question between Mac Collins and Kyle Williams, I'll take
- 55:48Speaker 7: Mac Collins. If it's you know, you know, Mac Collins
- 55:51Speaker 7: in to Mario Douglas, I'll take Mac Collins. But like,
- 55:55Speaker 7: if you had a fast guy that was a little
- 55:59Speaker 7: bit more polished or whatever, you know, if Booty was faster,
- 56:03Speaker 7: you know what I mean. In other words, if Booty
- 56:05Speaker 7: was one of these these speed guys that we're talking about,
- 56:08Speaker 7: then I would say Booty. I'll take Booty over Mac Collins.
- 56:12Speaker 7: But I first of all, I think mac Collins has
- 56:14Speaker 7: decent speed. I know he's definitely a sized guy. He's
- 56:17Speaker 7: more of a physical guy. He's he kind of contested catch,
- 56:21Speaker 7: but he can run too. It's not like he's a turtle.
- 56:23Speaker 7: It's not like Mohammed Sanu at the end, who was
- 56:27Speaker 7: a bigger, angular kind of receiver like that. I think
- 56:30Speaker 7: Collins moves better than that. But I just don't I
- 56:34Speaker 7: don't think that the fast options to me right now,
- 56:37Speaker 7: the speed options the Patriots have a more, as Evan said,
- 56:40Speaker 7: situational kind of not I don't want to call it gimmicky,
- 56:43Speaker 7: but like one you know, we're going to take shot place.
- 56:47Speaker 7: It's not a gimmick, but it's it's just not something
- 56:50Speaker 7: I want to run with consistently because I don't think
- 56:52Speaker 7: they're there consistently to earn that.
- 56:55Speaker 6: I just wonder where if because obviously Henry is going
- 56:57Speaker 6: to be on the field in these situations too. So
- 57:00Speaker 6: if it's Henry, and then if we you know, maybe
- 57:02Speaker 6: Henderson takes that next step in the passing game, but
- 57:04Speaker 6: it could be Remandre a lot of the time too.
- 57:07Speaker 6: So if you're five guys on third and eight are
- 57:10Speaker 6: brown Dobbs, Hollins, Henry Vermandre. Is there enough of a
- 57:15Speaker 6: stretch element, enough of a speed element on the field
- 57:19Speaker 6: to get, you know, the defense to get off the
- 57:21Speaker 6: line of scrimmage? And that would be the question. I
- 57:23Speaker 6: don't know if there would be, but I think they
- 57:26Speaker 6: would probably say they'd rather play the better player at
- 57:28Speaker 6: the end of the day. But you know, you just
- 57:30Speaker 6: like to have different types.
- 57:31Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think but I think Josh wants to
- 57:33Speaker 5: use four five receivers.
- 57:35Speaker 4: You know, I just think it's it's not going to
- 57:36Speaker 4: be that these are the three guys and this is
- 57:38Speaker 4: I mean, there's just an I know we're mini camp,
- 57:40Speaker 4: there's rotation anyway, but I think he wants to have
- 57:42Speaker 4: those options. All right, we're inside the high red zone.
- 57:44Speaker 4: This is a mac Collins area. You know, we're inside
- 57:46Speaker 4: our own place. Let's try to take a shot.
- 57:48Speaker 3: You want to have different packages for different matchups and
- 57:51Speaker 3: different scenarios, and.
- 57:55Speaker 2: You know, you don't want to be easy to defend.
- 57:56Speaker 5: That's I think they're getting there, Fred, I really do
- 57:59Speaker 5: getting there.
- 57:59Speaker 2: All right.
- 58:00Speaker 3: We're also getting halfway through the show, so time for break.

- 1:00:33Speaker 10: And A. J.
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: Brown looks like you're starting to connect fairly easily.
- 1:00:40Speaker 13: It's hard enough to get excited.
- 1:00:42Speaker 17: You know, what a player he is and just you know,
- 1:00:44Speaker 17: sorr off the battle, what a great teammates so far,
- 1:00:47Speaker 17: he's eager to learn. He's great with the guys in
- 1:00:49Speaker 17: the locker room, and we just look forward to playing
- 1:00:51Speaker 17: with the guy that caliber. And I know he's been
- 1:00:53Speaker 17: a great player in this league. He's gone everywhere he's gone.
- 1:00:56Speaker 17: He's been you know, guy that you see him on
- 1:00:59Speaker 17: Sports Center the next day, you know, making plays and scoring.
- 1:01:01Speaker 13: And you know the best thing about him, he's he's
- 1:01:03Speaker 13: been a winner.
- 1:01:04Speaker 17: You know, he's no what's like to win, and he's
- 1:01:06Speaker 17: had something in that room that you really, you know,
- 1:01:07Speaker 17: kind of we were we're kind of you know, kind
- 1:01:10Speaker 17: of looking for. And I think that's the best thing,
- 1:01:12Speaker 17: you know, I think Steph provided for us last year.
- 1:01:14Speaker 17: And there's been guys that are growing in the roles,
- 1:01:15Speaker 17: but just coming in with that stature and his ability
- 1:01:18Speaker 17: and his size and just the respect that you walk
- 1:01:20Speaker 17: in there with that kind of stuff. Had AJ's got
- 1:01:23Speaker 17: it to drink.
- 1:01:23Speaker 12: Where are you this year than he have wise now
- 1:01:27Speaker 12: with Josh As far as feeling comfortable.
- 1:01:30Speaker 17: And with the offense and doing what you do, I
- 1:01:32Speaker 17: think it's just naturally night and day from from last year.
- 1:01:35Speaker 17: At this time, you know, I was trying to you know,
- 1:01:36Speaker 17: get things right, trying to get guys you know know
- 1:01:38Speaker 17: where I was, you know, making making calls and getting
- 1:01:41Speaker 17: guys lined up. And now we're just you know, kind
- 1:01:43Speaker 17: of taking the next steps. And that's the best thing
- 1:01:45Speaker 17: about this time. You get to you know, work on
- 1:01:46Speaker 17: those things and also work on kind of executing.
- 1:01:49Speaker 13: And that's the best thing.
- 1:01:49Speaker 17: Coach mcgam's is pushing me hard and he's challenging me
- 1:01:51Speaker 17: and you know, trying not to get comfortable to your know,
- 1:01:54Speaker 17: the a's and getting comfortable of just doing things and
- 1:01:56Speaker 17: being out here and just making throws.
- 1:01:57Speaker 13: You know, there's a reason and there's a there's a
- 1:01:59Speaker 13: why to it.
- 1:01:59Speaker 17: And the best thing about Colas mc danielsy is so
- 1:02:01Speaker 17: good about explaining that why and helping me get to
- 1:02:03Speaker 17: know that why.
- 1:02:04Speaker 13: So I can play faster. It's a group of receivers.
- 1:02:06Speaker 17: All What does it do for you as a quarterback
- 1:02:08Speaker 17: to potentially look across the line and have a whole
- 1:02:10Speaker 17: group of bigger targets.
- 1:02:12Speaker 13: Yeah, it's it's comforting, you know, no doubt.
- 1:02:13Speaker 17: We've got guys up there that are you know, a
- 1:02:15Speaker 17: lot stronger than me in the late room when I'm
- 1:02:17Speaker 17: dumbellt benching with them. So you know, I think it's
- 1:02:19Speaker 17: It's also something that has in the run game, you know,
- 1:02:21Speaker 17: its it brings kind of physicality to to us to
- 1:02:24Speaker 17: down here in the red zone, you know, makes it
- 1:02:25Speaker 17: easier contested catches, you know, really are you know they
- 1:02:28Speaker 17: always say fifty to fifty.
- 1:02:29Speaker 13: We're trying to make them that way. And that's when
- 1:02:30Speaker 13: you've got guys that can make plays like that.
- 1:02:32Speaker 17: So you know, I grew up throwing them my brothers
- 1:02:33Speaker 17: my whole life that are six seven and and tall
- 1:02:35Speaker 17: and big across the middle, So I'm used to throwing
- 1:02:38Speaker 17: guys at that side.
- 1:02:38Speaker 13: It's awesome about you know.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Fifty ball and all that.
- 1:02:42Speaker 18: That's something A. J. Brown is known for us being
- 1:02:44Speaker 18: able to get those contested catches.
- 1:02:46Speaker 13: What about his game?
- 1:02:48Speaker 18: Have you seen them not kind of asked that they
- 1:02:50Speaker 18: are you excited about having a receiver that you know,
- 1:02:53Speaker 18: if you've there that ball, he's going to do everything
- 1:02:55Speaker 18: you tend to make that.
- 1:02:56Speaker 17: Yeah, this is really just all me to give him
- 1:02:58Speaker 17: a chance to touch it, because more times than you
- 1:02:59Speaker 17: he's gonna bring it in.
- 1:03:00Speaker 13: So that's exciting.
- 1:03:01Speaker 17: And just knowing that you know a slant or something,
- 1:03:04Speaker 17: you know, quick out, you know something that you can
- 1:03:06Speaker 17: just give him the ball. He can go and break
- 1:03:08Speaker 17: some tackles and he's tough to tackle and guys don't
- 1:03:09Speaker 17: want to tackle, so you know, Romeo brings that, Mac
- 1:03:12Speaker 17: brings that, you know, have some guys that are tougher
- 1:03:14Speaker 17: to tackle than you think. And then when you get
- 1:03:15Speaker 17: up there in your garden and you're like, man, you
- 1:03:17Speaker 17: know he can catch a slant and take it the distance.
- 1:03:18Speaker 17: So that's kind of more of my mindset to you know,
- 1:03:21Speaker 17: be on time, you know, make good throws and let
- 1:03:22Speaker 17: them run with it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 18: There's a lot of focus on Mario Douglas has also
- 1:03:27Speaker 18: been a favorite target of yours in these early practices.
- 1:03:29Speaker 12: What are you see it from him?
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: And how is that kind of shut between you?
- 1:03:32Speaker 17: So as I got here as a rookie. He always
- 1:03:33Speaker 17: just does the right thing. He does the right thing,
- 1:03:35Speaker 17: makes the right place, makes catches. He's hard to cover.
- 1:03:38Speaker 17: Like I said, you can't guard him in a phone booth,
- 1:03:40Speaker 17: and he's so good at breaking off a man coverage.
- 1:03:43Speaker 17: He's a mismatch, you know, he's so hard to you know,
- 1:03:45Speaker 17: to to stay in front of. And you know, looking
- 1:03:46Speaker 17: forward to kind of seeing his role kind of you know,
- 1:03:48Speaker 17: grow bigger.
- 1:03:49Speaker 13: Improve the most. I think that's what you're out here doing.
- 1:03:54Speaker 13: You're still trying to improve.
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:03:55Speaker 13: It's hard for me to gauge.
- 1:03:56Speaker 17: You know, I'm just kind of just you know, focused
- 1:03:57Speaker 17: day to day and you really not, you know, trying
- 1:03:59Speaker 17: to pimple area, trying to get better in all areas,
- 1:04:01Speaker 17: and I think it's hard to pinpoint data. I think
- 1:04:03Speaker 17: one thing is making the right decision, you know, when
- 1:04:05Speaker 17: you know in the first you know, a few seconds
- 1:04:07Speaker 17: I have the ball in my hand, making the right decision.
- 1:04:09Speaker 17: Knowing said sometimes incompletions are kind of the best plays
- 1:04:12Speaker 17: and not trying to hold the ball too long and
- 1:04:14Speaker 17: kind of get out of the habit of really trying
- 1:04:15Speaker 17: to extend plays just because I feel like I haven't
- 1:04:17Speaker 17: extended to play.
- 1:04:18Speaker 12: In a while earlier, but you have a wear ability
- 1:04:22Speaker 12: to think ahead, to be ahead.
- 1:04:24Speaker 13: A couple of plays.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: When did you develop this ability to be able to.
- 1:04:28Speaker 12: Do that and what does it mean to you to
- 1:04:29Speaker 12: be able to do that.
- 1:04:30Speaker 17: I think it's just running plays or being in a
- 1:04:32Speaker 17: formation and just kind of the love for you know, hey,
- 1:04:35Speaker 17: next time we're in that formation and maybe we can
- 1:04:37Speaker 17: do this. I think whether it's playing Madden or getting
- 1:04:40Speaker 17: out there at a young age with my dad and
- 1:04:42Speaker 17: being in the formation and throwing a hitch out and
- 1:04:43Speaker 17: you thought the corner jumped in middle school, so next
- 1:04:45Speaker 17: time you run.
- 1:04:45Speaker 13: A hitch and go.
- 1:04:46Speaker 17: You know a little things like that where you just
- 1:04:48Speaker 17: pick up on little things and hey, maybe try this.
- 1:04:49Speaker 17: And because mcdams is the best in business at it,
- 1:04:51Speaker 17: so just trying to learn as much as he can
- 1:04:53Speaker 17: from there.
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: This year, like just talking about being maybe a little
- 1:04:57Speaker 10: bit more delivered than the last, seeking more ownership.
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: I don't want to mis represent what he was saying,
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: but just operating at the line that's going to help you.
- 1:05:05Speaker 13: Tried to do that, Nicole was wondering too.
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: Just spit it out.
- 1:05:10Speaker 19: Passion and Josh, we're just talking about how they challenged
- 1:05:13Speaker 19: you at the line and you've gone up to the
- 1:05:15Speaker 19: line that maybe no play call, and then it's on
- 1:05:17Speaker 19: you just sort of diagnose what's happening, how's that process
- 1:05:20Speaker 19: been going, and how do you feel like the feedback.
- 1:05:23Speaker 17: It's kind of trying to be a play caller, you know,
- 1:05:25Speaker 17: it's tough and this environment when they got eighteen seconds
- 1:05:28Speaker 17: on the clock and practice and I'm trying to you know,
- 1:05:30Speaker 17: do a do a hard count and try and get
- 1:05:31Speaker 17: us in a in a play that we like. So,
- 1:05:33Speaker 17: you know, I think it's awesome for to challenge me
- 1:05:35Speaker 17: and to you know, push my limits of knowing the
- 1:05:36Speaker 17: offense normal play looks good against what the defense is up.
- 1:05:39Speaker 17: And you know, the best thing that we kind of
- 1:05:41Speaker 17: been trying to focus on is kind of limited negative plays.
- 1:05:43Speaker 17: You know, negative plays in this league put you behind
- 1:05:45Speaker 17: the chains, but it was in the red zone, you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 17: and base downs and just trying to stay ahead of
- 1:05:48Speaker 17: chains and knowing that it's really on me to put
- 1:05:50Speaker 17: us in good plays, get us out of bad plays,
- 1:05:52Speaker 17: and keep the chains, you know, stay ahead of the chains.
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: Talk a little bit about.
- 1:05:55Speaker 18: What this last activity was that you guys were doing
- 1:05:57Speaker 18: on the field of those slides look like thing like
- 1:06:00Speaker 18: kind of talk.
- 1:06:01Speaker 17: Through we split up in the teams, you know, split
- 1:06:04Speaker 17: up in the families. At the beginning of the off season,
- 1:06:06Speaker 17: kind of had about you know, thirteen teams. You know,
- 1:06:08Speaker 17: have some captains in these team and some some different
- 1:06:10Speaker 17: guys and has about seven players in each. So we've
- 1:06:13Speaker 17: kind of been keeping a point tally, you know, kind
- 1:06:16Speaker 17: of how we've been doing with the families. You know,
- 1:06:17Speaker 17: I think my family is maybe in the second so
- 1:06:20Speaker 17: we've got some more to do to get that you know,
- 1:06:21Speaker 17: kind of final first first place push. But yeah, the
- 1:06:24Speaker 17: lowest time to come out here and push the sleds
- 1:06:26Speaker 17: and try to compete against each other and just another
- 1:06:28Speaker 17: way of team building and you know, competing and having
- 1:06:31Speaker 17: to strategize and you know kind of have something that
- 1:06:33Speaker 17: may not go right and try to fix it. Say
- 1:06:38Speaker 17: that one time, Yeah, we asked that, We asked that
- 1:06:40Speaker 17: leadership group coach. I think Vrabel's kind of coming up
- 1:06:43Speaker 17: with something, so hopefully something pretty good.
- 1:06:47Speaker 13: Your career going up against the guy like time, what
- 1:06:50Speaker 13: had been to you over the course of the last
- 1:06:52Speaker 13: year plus, gowing up against the guy like man CD
- 1:06:55Speaker 13: has been awesome. He's awesome.
- 1:06:56Speaker 17: In the locker room we got out there before practice,
- 1:06:58Speaker 17: he's saying, hey, through throw what at me and and
- 1:07:00Speaker 17: come challenge me today. So you know he wants work
- 1:07:03Speaker 17: and he's proven in this league as a guy to
- 1:07:05Speaker 17: make plays in the football. You know, he's one of
- 1:07:07Speaker 17: the best at you know, being physical, being honest, man
- 1:07:09Speaker 17: and man coverage, and you know he's a winner. You know,
- 1:07:11Speaker 17: he's won it and he knows what it's like to
- 1:07:13Speaker 17: win and obviously done a lot of things right in
- 1:07:15Speaker 17: his career. So it's awesome for have you know him
- 1:07:16Speaker 17: and Gonzo and you know, even some more corners and
- 1:07:18Speaker 17: DB's you know that backing group that they got over there.
- 1:07:21Speaker 17: It was a real tough challenge for us and you
- 1:07:23Speaker 17: know us receivers. So it's it's been awesome. And CD's
- 1:07:25Speaker 17: just he's always in a great mood and he's he's
- 1:07:27Speaker 17: fun to be here with.
- 1:07:29Speaker 13: So he always is.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: And now great moments in.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: History.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: I have an excellent mattress.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Kind of mattress you don't know.
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: You don't know this a regular war or a memory phone.
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: I don't know what it is that you don't know, No, Beth, Bet,
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: that's everything important in my house sleeping on.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Well, how did she know it was a good mattress?
- 1:07:52Speaker 16: For you?
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: It was a great mattress.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: How did she know that?
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: Because I was on it before we bowed, so you'd know.
- 1:07:57Speaker 10: So what was?
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: What kind it was? I don't really to test.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Why are you being like Eric and not giving me information?
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: This is what Eric would do. It's a mattress. I don't.
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: First of all, that's exactly the opposite of what Eric
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: would do.
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: Eric would tell you the name of the mattress and
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: it would absolutely be the most expensive that.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: You've ever heard.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: No, only if only if he really, like.
- 1:08:16Speaker 7: I ever think, maybe I don't want to tell you
- 1:08:18Speaker 7: that I spent way more money on a mattress than
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: should be humanly.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: Possible with that, because it's embarrassing.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Mattress stuff that you do, Alex Marises are important, are
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: they not?
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: They are?
- 1:08:27Speaker 9: But I'm saying that as someone whose mattress came from
- 1:08:29Speaker 9: a box at Costco and I just pulled it out,
- 1:08:31Speaker 9: and well, you're.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Right, I mean I think, no, I think if you
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: don't weigh a lot at it, I think the mattress,
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: the mattress doesn't matter that much. It's only when you're heavy,
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: you know. Is it a temperped it it's a temp
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: repeedi because hey, hey, sweete, what kind of bed is
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: it that we have, Paul, It's a temp repeedic right?
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: Probably?
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: Does it go up and down to the have like
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: controls on it?
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: And so the old person adjusts a little.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: Bet No, but he can change the TV channels with
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: his butt cheese, so it doesn't have to move his arms.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Yes, jos is on. That's another great moment.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: Back here in Patriots Unfiltered eight five to five Pass
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: five hundred is the hotline podcast at Patriots dot com
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: is the email address. We're talking a little bit World
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Cup during the break, and the US has chances. Of course,
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: we always have an expert no matter what the topic is.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: In this case it's the same as always.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: Barton Poland.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: He was talking about the US's chances and this one
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: he says, I agree that advancing from their group should
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: be the expectation for the US. That said, I wouldn't
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: consider a group stage exit some huge shock being the host.
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Uh you know, you get the the automatic bid. It
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: helped them avoid the strongest teams. But I actually think
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: This is one of the more balanced groups in the tournament,
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: the one that the US is in. In my opinion,
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: Turkey is the group favorite. Paraguay, who they're going to
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: play tomorrow, is also very underrated. They conceded the fewest
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: goals in South American qualifying finish level on points with
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Brazil and beat Argentina. Australia is probably the weakest team
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: in the group, but even there the US could have
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: drawn a much easier opponent. The US should advance, but
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: I don't think this group is nearly as straightforward as
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: some people are making it out. To be a third
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: place finish and counting points eight out of twelve third
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: place teams advance is very possible.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: So there's some expert opinion from Barton poland the.
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: Betting odds would agree with him. The betting odds are
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: very flat in terms of all four teams actually having
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: at least a chance to get out of the group.
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: My point wasn't that it would be surprising the US
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: soccer team failing miserably on home turf would be the
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: least surprising thing that ever happened. My point was is
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: how disappointed I would be if that happened. Yeah, I
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: think that that would be It would be so good.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: If they made a run just to make it interesting Domestically.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: It would be a major failure for them to knock
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: get out of the group.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: Okay, that's it, all right, that's our World Cup today.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Back to my roster breakdown there, we already got that.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: Let's go to the phones. Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:11:19Speaker 9: Hey, so I would blow the blow the horn, but
- 1:11:21Speaker 9: I'm in the in the dock.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Okay, don't do that. People get pissed.
- 1:11:25Speaker 9: That's I think you're wrong about AJ. I think either
- 1:11:29Speaker 9: the place where you want to be, even though it's speculations,
- 1:11:32Speaker 9: but I don't think he blow up this year or
- 1:11:35Speaker 9: next year.
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: I didn't say he was going to blow up.
- 1:11:38Speaker 13: No, you said, you know I have no idea.
- 1:11:42Speaker 9: Well I don't. I don't think. I almost feel like
- 1:11:44Speaker 9: I said when we had mouse, Well back then, I
- 1:11:47Speaker 9: said most I said super Bowl.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just saying I don't do it. I did
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: not say that A. J. Brown is gonna blow up.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: I just want to repeat that thing.
- 1:11:54Speaker 7: You don't know, I have no I have no idea
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: how to predict something that hasn't happened, that's all.
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: Okay, But that's all I want to say too. But
- 1:12:02Speaker 9: I think, well, I being out of camp, I knew
- 1:12:04Speaker 9: it was just a passing camp. I can't wait to
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: see the paths and see how y'all report then and
- 1:12:10Speaker 9: see how we go from there. That's all I gotta say.
- 1:12:12Speaker 9: And y'all have a good one, all right, thanks?
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Aldred.
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's when you'll see the physicality of Brown,
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: like just trying to defend him. I mean, you can
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: see he's just wait for games. Handful of he's practices.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: That's when practices will be because.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Even when they have pad, it's not full right, you know,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: to the ground, you know.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: Sauce Gardner, I mean, I mean a J. Brown going
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: against the Eagles. I mean, that's that's awesome. Just must see,
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: must see TV studying Thudding and that wouldn't be surprised, isn't.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: Didn't Gardener get hurt?
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: Johnson?
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Yeah, he's to recover, Sauce Gardner.
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: Sauce Gardner, Well, he's coming off an injury.
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: So I wouldn't be surprised. Don't see him.
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: I think he's okay.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: So he didn't tear his a co A c L.
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: No thought he did.
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: No, he had like no, you would have heard about
- 1:12:57Speaker 7: that last year. Last No, I believe that I thought
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: he's I thought he ended the year on I R
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: and was out calf and he's been participating in O
- 1:13:07Speaker 7: T A. I believe he set out the last four games,
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: five games with a strange I.
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: Think I thought he had a significant injury, half injury
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: that leads to the Achilles, like pemptive capin injury.
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: Maybe that's maybe that's why I thought he had a
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: big injury. But I mean Daniel Jones Rupture's Achilles. He's
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: taking part in O T S two, remarkably without the
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: the accompanying documentary series.
- 1:13:29Speaker 20: Okay, shot five the shots fired at the soccer at
- 1:13:34Speaker 20: the Celtics for just today.
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: He might not see those, U, Alex Pierce, What what
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: market could you hurt?
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: An ankle injury? Injury?
- 1:13:44Speaker 11: What?
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: What serious?
- 1:13:46Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I have a very No, he has a serious injury.
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: Nice off season surgery for it and they're.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: Still rehaving from off season surgery. Oh like an old injury?
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: Oh okay, never mind.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: Well, what sports market could you live in that you
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: would actually like? The home teams oh Boston, But you don't,
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: I do you hate them all.
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: I get frustrated with my teams because I'm a good fan.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: I don't just blindly, you know, let them like the
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: Red Sox right now are not doing everything that they
- 1:14:13Speaker 7: can to put a winning product on the field. That
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: frustrates me as a fan. I could go live in
- 1:14:18Speaker 7: Polukaville and just say yay.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: But everything was good. But even in years that they
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: were good.
- 1:14:25Speaker 7: Two thousand and four was one of the greatest sports
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: moments in my life, coming back from three to zero down.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Well, I think that's back when you still had some innocence.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: I'm talking about.
- 1:14:34Speaker 20: Ron, I don't know we were talking about Everyone asked, man,
- 1:14:37Speaker 20: we are talking about this or out at practice.
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: Unfortunately, the game went the way it went because we
- 1:14:43Speaker 6: had Paul at the super Bowl. Paul was in at
- 1:14:47Speaker 6: the super Bowl, like we a great story. That was
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: easily the happiest I've seen Paul in the four years
- 1:14:53Speaker 6: that we've worked together, and he was he We had
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: him pregame, he was ready to go.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: Do we ever tell that we all we got all
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: we need sweatshirts story here on.
- 1:15:03Speaker 16: That?
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, in fairness to me, I would wrote,
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: I don't know, but I would. I think Evan's nailing it. Like,
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: first of all, last year was a great story, Like
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Like just go four and thirteen back to
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: back years and all of a sudden you're in the
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: super Bowl.
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: That's a terrific story. It's hard to not get caught
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: up and something like that. But I would separate.
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: I know you're being snarky and making fun of me,
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: which is fine because that's what we do. I would
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: separate the Patriots, like there's probably no Boston sports team
- 1:15:37Speaker 7: that is more like just like visceral rooting for than
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: the Patriots out of the full Boston sports and men,
- 1:15:43Speaker 7: I was a season ticket holder's the only local team
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: I've ever been a season ticket holder of is the Patriots,
- 1:15:50Speaker 7: So that's it. But when you work for a team,
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: it does become a little different. In Fred's right, like
- 1:15:55Speaker 7: I don't have the same sort of on a bashed
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: joy that I wanted it like in two thousand one
- 1:16:00Speaker 7: will never happen again for me, Like just that reaction
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: that we had when Adam kicked a field goal against Oakland,
- 1:16:06Speaker 7: When me, Brian and Fred are like kind of celebrating
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: in the end zone like that will probably never happen again,
- 1:16:12Speaker 7: because it's just a little different when you work for
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: the teams. But the other three, I get frustrated, you know,
- 1:16:19Speaker 7: with the Red Sox for sure, because of ownership. Evan
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: says the same thing in his situation about the Celtics
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: because Billy Banners did the same thing. Prove it is
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: he not doing everything he can to put a winning team,
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: So that's frustrating. The Bruins are the one team that
- 1:16:34Speaker 7: still gets me every year. They're certainly rebuilding. It's not
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: a great team, but I love hockey and I still
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: get swept up in the playoffs and very now that
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: very yeah, but I mean it's it's not the same
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: when you're fifty eight as it is when you're eighteen.
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: Sure, it's not even the same for me anymore, like
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: maybe with the Celtics.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: But with the other teams, it's not Mike my teams,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Mike writes in A lot has been made about the
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Patriots schedule last year and it being harder this upcoming season.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: This is partly due to them having a last play
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: schedule last year and moving to a first place schedule
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: this year. Yes, we know that.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: This got me wondering how often teams have gone worse
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: to first in their division and how they've done the
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: following season. Since six there have been seventeen teams who
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: went from worse to first in their division. Here's some
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: stats on how those seventeen teams fared the following season.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: Only two improved their record the following year, twenty the
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: twenty twelve Broncos in the twenty twenty two Bengals. Eleven
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: of seventeen teams had winning records. Six teams won ten
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: plus games. On average, teams won two less games than
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: their prior season. Twenty four percent won their division again,
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: seventeen percent finished in last. Of the four teams who
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: won twelve plus games, they averaged three less wins the
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: next year. The most comparable team in terms of strength
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: of schedule to w our Patriots last year was the
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: eleven Chiefs, who went ten and six. The following year,
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: they finished seven to nine and last in their division again.
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: So do you have any stats about the worst schedules
- 1:18:13Speaker 7: or you're just talking about last place teams the following year?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Teams that went worse the first how do they do then?
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: So you're not telling me about the schedule is what
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: you're talent, is my point.
- 1:18:24Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:18:24Speaker 7: The Patriots schedule last year wasn't weak because it was
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: a last place schedule. Those are only three games. It
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: was weak because of the two divisions they also had
- 1:18:33Speaker 7: to play in addition to the last place teams from
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: the other three divisions yep, which is why it was
- 1:18:38Speaker 7: statistically the weakest schedule in the history of the sixteen game,
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: Like the sixteen game is expanded schedule in nineteen seventy eight,
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: going back at least that far. So not every last
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: play schedule is created equal, Like right now, the Patriots
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: have the first place schedule. Buffalo's three other games are
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: actually harder than the Patriots on paper, Like you don't
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: know how those are going to play out, But Buffalo
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: plays Baltimore. The Patriots played Pittsburgh. Baltimore is the hotter team,
- 1:19:15Speaker 7: like they're the more talented team. But that's why I'm saying, like,
- 1:19:19Speaker 7: not all last place schedules are created equal.
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I think the obviously the most
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: important thing when you're building the schedule is your own
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: division and and how good the teams are in your
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: own division. But then also the the division. Rotation of
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: the NFC division I think is way more important than
- 1:19:36Speaker 6: the last.
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: That's why Buffalo had an easy schedule last year. Yeah,
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: just like the Patriots, right right.
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: So now that with the Patriots playing the North, the
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: NFC North, that that's a tough division. You know, it's
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: all good teams pretty.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Much Gary from Harvard, the town, not the university.
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: Clarification.
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: Paul showed one of his little appreciated talents a few
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: shows ago with a thorough analysis of the targets various
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: reivers had last year. In the implications I wasn't able
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: to watch in real time, I want to point out
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: that the total number of targets per game will be
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: greater as Drake and Josh use a shorter, quicker pass
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: plays when battling better teams. If every scoring possession takes
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: sixteen plays instead of eight, that's twice the targets per score.
- 1:20:18Speaker 7: So I agree with your premise, not the way you
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: got there. I think they will throw more passes because
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: I don't think they're going to have, you know, three
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: score leads every game in the second half, and they
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: won't be able to throw the ball twenty two times
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: every game like they did. Last year, not because like
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: you have to throw sixteen play scoring drives together instead
- 1:20:35Speaker 7: of eight play scoring drives. I think they'll have to
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: throw the ball more often this year because they won't
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: always be ahead in the second half of every game, right,
- 1:20:43Speaker 7: Like it just stands to reason.
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: You know, you played every game last year on your.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: Turn, and it was like hard like half the games,
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: half their wins, were games in which he threw the
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: ball like low twe.
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: Twenty five or fewer times, like an insane amount of time.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: Go back to one of the callers we had earlier
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: in the show, said, like you know that, I said, oh,
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: he could be better this year, make strides. I mean,
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: this is what we're talking about. Like it was very
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: favorable for him last year. It's going to be harder
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: this year. It doesn't mean that I don't think that
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: he can still perform at you know, at a high level,
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: but it's it's gonna be tough.
- 1:21:12Speaker 7: But I agree with him his premise, And this is
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: why I wouldn't necessarily I'm not attacking the email because
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: I agree one hundred percent with the pre There will
- 1:21:18Speaker 7: be more targets this year because I think they'll attempt
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: more passes than they did last year.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, Matt in Wichita, I mean emailed in after the
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: Saints game in awe at how fast Drake may improve
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: his ability to step up and move around in the pocket. Unfortunately,
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: from a casual viewer's perspective, it seemed that Drake fell
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: back into his bad habits during the tougher games. Some
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: games you could tell in the first quarter that he
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: was not going to have a good feel for the rush.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: Why did it seem like some games Drake had eyes
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: in the back of his head, and then during the
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: tougher games he was loose with the.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Ball and didn't see the rushers.
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: Is that purely on Drake improving on ball security and
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: timing or will having better wide receivers help him be
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: in a better rhythm. I know he was MVP runner up,
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: so I may be overplaying this a bit, but the
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: bad games were very bad.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: Last year for Drake.
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: I would love to see Drake cut down on the
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: fumbles during his bad games next year.
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: I mean playing better pass rushers. Like it's one thing
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: to move around the pocket and get away from guys
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: on the Jets and the Titans, It's another thing to
- 1:22:23Speaker 6: get away from Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter in the
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: playoffs to that point, what.
- 1:22:26Speaker 7: Was one of the games that he didn't look like
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: he scrambled around very well in against a bad team
- 1:22:31Speaker 7: Cleveland who sacked him five times. Because there's different no,
- 1:22:36Speaker 7: I mean, Miles Garrett, it's a difference between just running
- 1:22:38Speaker 7: away from guys that you're better than. As Evan said earlier,
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: sometimes you're just better than the opponent. Yeah, sometimes you're not.
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: So I think, you know, I think wide receivers will help,
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: and I think better defensive line.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: Will improvement, and Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, which Mike
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: Verbele highlighted today. But I just, you know, it just
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: needs to be the sense of calm and you know,
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: a sense of experience and know that maturity of the position.
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: I think some of the times last year when he
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: got caught up, it's because I think he gets out
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: over his skis a little bit, you know, and he's
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: there going fast and he you know, doesn't have the
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: experience to slow down hit the reset button. That's something
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: I would have loved to see him be able to
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: do in the Super Bowl. You know, we just we
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: saw it so many times with Brady, and I hate
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: comparing Brady, but you know, no matter how the game
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: was going, you knew at some point he was going
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: to start to probably play with right, you know, and
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: that I'd love to feel that way about Drake because
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: right now we've said it a couple of times when
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: he's off. You can kind of tell he's off, when
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: he's feeling it. You can see it right away. Remember
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: one of the before one of the the might have
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: been before the Texans. It's either Chargers of the Texans
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: playoff game. Remember one of their defenders thing like he's
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: almost too comfortable in the pocket, And like I understood
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: what he was saying, because there were times last year
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: when Drake was like guys all around and I'm like, man,
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: he's just staying locked in.
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: It was great. Got to get him there and help
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: him stay there, you know, more consistently.
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I just keep coming. Like I feel
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: like people are searching for like some mechanical thing or
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: some like football nuanced thing, and I just think it's experience.
- 1:24:02Speaker 6: Like I think we have to remind ourselves that that
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: was his first playoff run. Those were his first playoff games,
- 1:24:07Speaker 6: you know, against really good defenses. You know, not to
- 1:24:11Speaker 6: make it about basketball, but you know, watching the NBA Finals,
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: and I feel the same thing about watching the Spurs,
- 1:24:16Speaker 6: Like the Spurs look like a better team than the
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: Knicks a lot of the time. But for Wenby and
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: all those guys, it's the first time and sometimes you
- 1:24:23Speaker 6: gotta like taste your own blood first before you you know,
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: really start to learn and you know, grow from those experiences.
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: It's it's the Brady's and the mahomes Is that come
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: in and are automatically in the winning Super Bowls. It's
- 1:24:34Speaker 6: it's not usually the way that these things go in sports.
- 1:24:37Speaker 6: So with a lot of these things, I think he
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: just needs to play more like it. Just it's not
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: going to be something like, you know, fancy that he
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: does to fix it or something like that. He just
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: needs to experience that speed more often, like playoff speed,
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: especially against good defenses. There's a different speed to it
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: than the regular season.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: No doubt. Darius and Louisville wondering what did you get.
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: I think about the snap count last year and he's
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: talking about like the actual cadence. I thought it was
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: a little predictable at times. I don't grind the tape
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: or nothing, but like that, but maybe one thing that
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: could help Drake is changing cadences or going on too
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: just my thought.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: Did you notice quite a bit?
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Did you notice any predictability about it?
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: No, not any like you know Denver twenty fifteen when
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: they you know, stork headbobs. Yeah, so they've actually experimented
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: with a couple of different silent counts. I'm sure Josh
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: McDaniels has learned his lesson with the head bobs. So
- 1:25:40Speaker 6: they have a couple of different ways, you know, to
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: get the offense in motion and the cadence, and then
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: they have a couple of different versions of the silent count.
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: So I won't give them away, but you know, they
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: do a bunch of different things with snap counts and
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: things like that. But I think you know, in a
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: lot of those situations that he's probably talking about, when
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: you get into obvious passing situations with any good defense
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: on the other side, those guys are pinning their ears
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: back and they're getting off the ball. So if you're
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: in third and eight thirty nine against the defense like Seattle,
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: it's you know, that's tough. That's a tough way to live.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Well, in d C writes in we talked a lot
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: about Drake improving his pre snap reads for passing game
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: adjustments in year two. I wonder how that might also
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: help the run game, where he checks to a run
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: when there's an opportunity. Do you think Drake's experience in
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: the system can help.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: The running backs?
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think. I mean, I think, well, we
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: talked at the.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: Top of the show about giving letting him go to
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: the line without a play.
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I think. I think one of the plays he
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: ran was a run play. So yeah, it's all you know,
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: it's all that maturity, and that's why I love that drill.
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: It speaks to what you know, Evan's talking about, of
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: giving him experience, putting you know, putting his brain to
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: the test. The kid has all the physical talent in
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: the world. His arm is great, his legs are great,
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: he's got good size. But it's just going to be
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: the mental part of the game that's going to continue
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: to evolve. And as they face new challenges and new
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: defenses and you keep adding to that bucket, it should
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: continue to go up.
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: You don't normally change run plays too much, like you're
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: not gonna kill kill you're not gonna have like, no,
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: you're not going to have like oh, we're gonna run,
- 1:27:19Speaker 6: We're gonna run outside zone and now I see this.
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: Now we're gonna just we're gonna go ahead and we're
- 1:27:23Speaker 6: gonna run power like you know, we're gonna run gap
- 1:27:25Speaker 6: Like that's more normally to Fred's kill kill kill over there,
- 1:27:29Speaker 6: you have a can system where you have a run
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: play in a pass play based off the safety shell.
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: Then you make an indication of which way you want
- 1:27:35Speaker 6: to go if you want to throw the ball, you
- 1:27:37Speaker 6: want to run it. Uh, you know, in terms of
- 1:27:39Speaker 6: like audibleing out of like we're gonna go from a
- 1:27:41Speaker 6: completely one scheme to a completely new run scheme. I
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: don't think a lot of teams do a whole lot
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: of that.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: So like, you know, it's weird though, because we just
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: you know, not to make light of it, but like
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: when a quarterback does say kill kill kill, Okay, now
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: is that indicating to the defense Okay, now we can
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: off of that.
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: Well that's why, well that's why they have dummy versions. Yeah,
- 1:28:06Speaker 6: so that they don't you know, get caught like that.
- 1:28:09Speaker 6: You know, some teams call it kill. Some teams you
- 1:28:11Speaker 6: can you know, whatever the case may be. But a
- 1:28:14Speaker 6: lot of teams do that. They call two plays in
- 1:28:16Speaker 6: the huddle. Usually it's pass run, but sometimes it could
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: be pass pass or run run, depending on the situation.
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: And then the quarterback comes to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: he looks at the defense and decides to put the
- 1:28:28Speaker 6: team in the best play that they could run into
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: that defense. So there's a lot of that that does
- 1:28:33Speaker 6: go on, and a lot of teams do it. One
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: team that does a lot of it is the Jaguars,
- 1:28:37Speaker 6: and it was actually a big problem for them. They
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: had more delay game penalties than like anybody in the league,
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: as Trevor Lawrence couldn't get them into the right play
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: quick enough. So, like some it has its pros and cons.
- 1:28:47Speaker 6: Is my point is that you know, you really do
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: tend to run the play clock down pretty close to
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: zero when you're getting into that whole minutia of having
- 1:28:56Speaker 6: different play calls.
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: Jake and Melbourne, Australia.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: He says, I appreciate it's some mini camp review focus show,
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: but could we get a sixty second summary of Evans's
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: thoughts of the Knicks come back last night?
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's appropriate before.
- 1:29:10Speaker 6: Sixty seconds is unnecessary thirty funny story. So they were up.
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: The Spurs were up seventeen with eight minutes to go.
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: So I called it a night. I was like, all right,
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: like they if once they didn't make a run to
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: start the fourth quarter, I was like, all right, I
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: think that the Spurs will have this. I woke up
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: at around like twelve twelve thirty for some reason, I
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: don't know, and I looked at my phone and my
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: whole my like I'm blowing up with notifications from either
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: people or Twitter or whatever. And I didn't even look
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: at the score. And I knew the Knicks came back
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: because that's the reaction that was going on. And I
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: was just like, you have got to be kidding me.
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: But the one text message that I got with my
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: name in all capital letters was from one Bradley and
- 1:29:54Speaker 6: he just was rubbing the mistakes all day long, and
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: I just I went up him today. I shook his
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: hand and I said congratulations, and that was it.
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: I lasted through the third quarter and it was fifteen.
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: At that point, I knew they were going to come back.
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: I just knew it.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: I just knew it, Like the way the Spurs just
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: tightened up as they choke. They choked.
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: Usually when those comebacks happened though, the first couple of
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: minutes of the fourth quarter, they start to make the.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Run, right, and then they got it back up right
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: twenty right, and.
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: So they get it down from like twenty to ten,
- 1:30:29Speaker 6: and then they'll go and then the last five minutes
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: will be just be a war, right to get it
- 1:30:33Speaker 6: from ten to a lead. So when the Spurs held
- 1:30:36Speaker 6: the lead for the first three or four minutes of
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: the fourth quarter, I was like, all right, I feel
- 1:30:40Speaker 6: pretty confident in this, and then of course what happened happened.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: The best thing to me is they got a twenty
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: eight to three scoreboard from Adam Schefter putting out both
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: the twenty to three.
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: This choke, Yeah, I think I don't know about that, Fred.
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: That was a Super Bowl that was a winner goes home,
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: loser goes home.
- 1:30:59Speaker 7: Okay, so this is the end finals, next game, you
- 1:31:03Speaker 7: go home, I know, but still it's not the same
- 1:31:05Speaker 7: as frett I would just say that the Falcons they
- 1:31:08Speaker 7: absolutely choked. I'm not saying that, but like mentally they
- 1:31:13Speaker 7: did some dumb like you get that. Pastor Julio Jones.
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: Just run the ball three times, kick a field goal,
- 1:31:18Speaker 7: but they didn't, and they got sacked, They got pushed
- 1:31:19Speaker 7: out a field goal range.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: The equivalent of what the Spurs did would have.
- 1:31:23Speaker 7: Been at the Falcons missed like a twenty five yard
- 1:31:26Speaker 7: field goal that would have iced the game. Wemby going
- 1:31:28Speaker 7: to the line and missing two free throws in the
- 1:31:30Speaker 7: last minute of the game is unlike anything the Falcons
- 1:31:33Speaker 7: did that night. I darn Fox, like missing.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Allowing that layer.
- 1:31:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I think you should have absolutely just gone right
- 1:31:41Speaker 7: to the basket and taken the layup. You cannot let
- 1:31:44Speaker 7: that get blocked. That's an unbelievable choke. I mean, in fairness,
- 1:31:49Speaker 7: it wasn't as big as this Josh Hart choke on
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: the previous possession that he missed that layup that would
- 1:31:53Speaker 7: have given the Knicks the lead originally.
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: But I just thought.
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: It's very similar. The stakes are very similar. I'm sorry,
- 1:32:02Speaker 7: Like it's a championship series. It's you put you down
- 1:32:04Speaker 7: three to one. Now you've got to pull a miracle.
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: Off to come back.
- 1:32:08Speaker 7: I can't believe how bad the Spurs choked, how they
- 1:32:12Speaker 7: couldn't even like execute simple inbound passes like the just
- 1:32:18Speaker 7: passing it around. They're like kicking it around and the
- 1:32:21Speaker 7: balls at guy's feet. Even the last play they had
- 1:32:23Speaker 7: one point seven seconds left or whatever it was on
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: the clock.
- 1:32:26Speaker 5: Then they couldn't even really get the ball in bounds,
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: like to get a shot off actually done.
- 1:32:33Speaker 6: Well, it's one, but they they had to play. They
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: had an ally up to Castle and Cat tip the
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: pass that the pass didn't make it to him.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: But I think.
- 1:32:43Speaker 6: Like getting me pass tipped, I guess, but like Cat's
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: seven feet tall.
- 1:32:47Speaker 7: I will say if they don't come back, and I
- 1:32:48Speaker 7: don't eliminate the possibility. I mean they've had like a
- 1:32:50Speaker 7: fifteen point lead in every game, right, Like they're clearly
- 1:32:53Speaker 7: a better team. They're just as Evans said, they're not right.
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: I think Silver wants them to win this one so
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: the next can win it. Yeah, oh yeah, pretty cool.
- 1:33:02Speaker 6: I just I keep like, obviously I think a lot
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: about the twenty twenty two Celtics when I've watched the Spurs,
- 1:33:08Speaker 6: But I also think a lot about the Patriots when
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: I watched the Spurs, where it's like, you know, you
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: have this young talent on your team that you have
- 1:33:16Speaker 6: a window, Like the Spurs are going to be a
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: very good basketball team for a long time. The Knicks
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: have a much much shorter runway here, but there, the
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: Spurs just aren't ready. They aren't ready for this kind
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: of for the finals and for this limelight and for
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: this attention and for this pressure. And so a lot
- 1:33:34Speaker 6: of times in sports, especially basketball, you have to lose
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: before you win. I mean, Michael Jordan didn't went until
- 1:33:39Speaker 6: seven eight years into the league. Same with Lebron, So
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: like you have to do that. And you know, for
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: the Patriots and Drake May, you just hope that last
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: year was the twenty twenty two Celtics and then maybe
- 1:33:48Speaker 6: it's not right away, but two years later this Celtics
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: won a championship.
- 1:33:51Speaker 7: You know, I do think if the Spurs do not
- 1:33:53Speaker 7: come back losing like that, yeah, could cause some significant
- 1:33:59Speaker 7: damage moving forward. Like what's not just like all the
- 1:34:02Speaker 7: young they'll be like that kind of loss can stick?
- 1:34:05Speaker 5: Did Atlanta? What did Atlanta do after nothing?
- 1:34:08Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: That was it?
- 1:34:09Speaker 11: Right?
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: Yeah, the twenty twenty two Celtics didn't have a twenty
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: nine point lead that they choked away, but they choked
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: away a couple of those games against Golden State in
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: that finals in one game and you know, they had
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: a lead in the fourth quarter. They had to lead
- 1:34:22Speaker 6: in the fourth quarter of Game four to go up
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: three to one, and they lost it. But every other
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: game the Warriors had a double digit lead in in
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: that series, so they they they had similar you know,
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: growing paints and you're just young teams. That's what happens.
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: And I think a lot of people just expect it,
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: you know, happen right away like it did for Brady,
- 1:34:39Speaker 6: or it just doesn't work that way most of the time.
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: All Right, that's your nixt minute, Matt Morrell.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: We're going to end the show, special edition of Patriots
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: Unfiltered post mini camp.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: I hope everyone has a good weekend. We'll be back
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: next week.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: And now before we go, yeah, we got some business
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: to do for next week's schedule, Matt Morel. Do you
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: have it in front of you, because I know I
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: will screw it up if I attend.
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: I can't hear you if I'm not mistaken. We Wednesday
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: and Thursday? Correct?
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: Yes, So Tuesday is Scotland Haiti. No, No, Scotland Haiti
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: is Saturday. There's a game on Tuesday. I don't know
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: who it is. World Cup match so we're not going
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: to do a show. I'm not going we're not going
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: to attempt to do a show on that day because
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: this is all FIFA run next Tuesday.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: But we're gonna have a show on Wednesday and Thursday next.
- 1:35:36Speaker 7: Week at our normal times, correct, Yes, and then catch
- 1:35:41Speaker 7: on Wednesday. Yes, So what's that two to four on
- 1:35:44Speaker 7: Wednesday for Catch right after?
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: Okay, so Patrison filtered on Wednesday at twelve, Catch twenty
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: two at two on Wednesday, and then Patriots unfiltered at
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: noon on Thursday. So we'll be on Wednesday and Thursday
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: at our normal time at noon next week.
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: I believe that to the cadences for the next couple
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: of weeks after that, unless I have something because of
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: World Cup. Yeah, so I think we're like that for
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: like the next three weeks, maybe.
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, all right, so just for your
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: so you can plan for next week. All right, have
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: a good weekend. We'll talk to you on Wednesday.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: Hey, this is deuced. Thanks for tuning into the show.
