- 0:00That's where there's an opportunity for growth when there's that change, which is a challenge, and you say, okay, I'm going to tackle this. Day one, fail. Day 10, fail. Day 100, you may fail at it. But when you continually be consistent at that, all of a sudden you're going to start to achieve the things that you want to do.
- 0:01And that's, that's, that's what it is. Because a lot of people just give up. Welcome to the Refrigeration Mentor Podcast. This podcast is for busy refrigeration professionals who want to learn faster and achieve more. I'm your refrigeration coach, Trevor Matthews. Here we cover everything from technical skills and industry trends to personal development.
- 0:02That is key to your success. And why do we talk about personal development? Because being a great refrigeration professional is Isn't just about your technical skills. It's also about your emotional intelligence, your communication skills, your leadership skills, and lifelong learning. Each episode helps refrigeration professionals enhance their skills, boost their resilience, and achieve a better work life.
- 0:03Whether you're a seasoned pro or you're just starting out, this podcast is your guide to being the best version of yourself and unlock your full potential. Thanks for tuning in. Let's grow together. Let's learn together. Now, let's get a conversation going. We talked about a couple days ago about setting goals and, and some of the steps in setting goals and then taking action to those goals.
- 0:04So it's easy to talk about that stuff and it's easy to give advice for someone else. To get something done. Um, but when you have to do it, it's harder. It's like going to your, uh, your friend's house and helping them with a project that you have the same project at home and you're struggling to get it done.
- 0:05And one of the big things that is from is the mindset you're in. And I want to really talk about that today and get you kind of prepared. On what you can do to help yourself. And that's the big thing. It's really developing your mindset. Because your friends, your family, or people around you can do the same thing as you.
- 0:06And out of the three of you or four of you, one of you might be more confident at it. And you're just confident at it because you believe you can do it, even if none of you've done the same thing before, but you're like, man, I can do this. I've done something similar to this. I can get it done and getting into the right mindset.
- 0:07Is going to help you achieve those goals and even take action to those goals over the last two two sessions that we talked about. Over the years I've been developing my mindset and how I've been doing that is really listen to experts over the years, people that have been talking about this for a hundred years, not even, not even, it's not even new.
- 0:08They've been talking for decades and centuries. No, if you go back thousands of years ago, people have been talking about this. And a lot of the stuff that we, the habits we get into, the things that we do is what we tell ourselves in our head and in our mind. So when you continue to develop your mindset, especially to a positive mindset.
- 0:09A lot of the challenges aren't as hard, and I'm noticing, and I tried this in my life, and it has worked, but it wasn't easy. It was not easy, because when you're down in yourself, and you're telling yourself you're bad at something, and you continue to tell yourself, you believe it. It's like, I've told a story many times, I might have even told in the last few days, I was telling myself I was bad at reading.
- 0:10And I kept telling myself, telling myself, telling myself, over the years, decades, I probably told myself that. So I never really read. I never took up on it. I never challenged myself with it because I kept telling myself that. So I put myself in this fixed mindset. I'm telling myself I wasn't good at reading.
- 0:11So I was not good at reading until I started telling myself, I'm going to get better at reading. I'm going to try this and I'm going to push at it. And I just pushed myself harder. And I read and I read every day and every day, even last night, every day I try to read. And a lot of this has to do with podcasts.
- 0:12Listen to the things that make you kind of feel uncomfortable. And you think, oh man, that's, that's dumb. That's not real affirmations. Or you tell yourself you're going to get good at something. You're going to get good at it. If you just tell yourself you're going to get good at it and you don't take actions to work, you're just going to, you're just telling that's like dreaming.
- 0:13You know, I'm going to win the lotto, like buying lotto, I'm going to win the lotto. You're, you're dreaming that if you want to become rich, it's not buying the lotto. It's working hard, coming up with ideas and really working towards it. So getting yourself into the mindset to achieve those goals and taking those actions, there's some of the things that you need to do to yourself.
- 0:14There's change that you need to make. That's it. There's a book that I read by, uh, Carol Dweck. It's called Mindset. She talks about fixed mindset versus growth mindset. And there's ways to. The change, is it hard? 100%. A lot of the things that we do in our life is hard. The biggest, the hardest thing is change.
- 0:15And this is what I've seen even for myself and people around me, people in my courses change. But when you start to see the change, you're like, man, that does work because I didn't believe in, you know, a lot of this mindset stuff affirmations. I didn't believe in, um, a lot of things that. Was outside my realm, getting coaching, getting mentors.
- 0:16I didn't, I didn't believe in a lot of that. So paying for people to, to fast track me, I didn't think that was it. I was like, Oh, why would I pay 10, 000 for that? Like, that doesn't make sense. Then I started doing this stuff and stuff started working. It's like I started, you know, practicing gratitude, which is still, I need to, you need to continue to practice.
- 0:17It's not like you just do it once and you do it one week or one month. You got to do it consistently for the rest of your life. That's, that's the thing. If you want to get into that right mindset, you got to do it. And one of the biggest things is embrace some of the challenges. You know, it's going to be hard.
- 0:18It's going to be difficult, difficult. So you take on a new task. It's going to be super hard. So you go from, just say you work in the field and you're doing a lot of just construction or you're doing install and you try to move the service. It is hard. I've done it. It's not easy, even though you could be one of the greatest construction technicians, install a technician, moving over to service is not easy.
- 0:19Starting to take on calls, you know, you're out on your own all the time. Cause when you're an installer, you're in construction, usually with a team working with people. Now you're by yourself in your van, driving lots of hours. Construction usually drive to a site. You stay at that site. The big thing is, is that.
- 0:20It's a change and that's the, that's the big thing is to change. If you get in the mindset, okay, these are the steps. These are the goals I need to take. I need to start learning how to work on the E2s and E3s, micro thermals, corrals, Danfoss, all these different things, controllers, for an example, or VFDs, you got to embrace those challenges.
- 0:21And a lot of them come from the change. And that's where there's an opportunity for growth, really, when there's that change, which is a challenge and you say, okay, I'm going to tackle this. Day 1, fail. Day 10, fail. Day 100, you may fail at it, but when you continually be consistent at that, all of a sudden, you're going to start to achieve the things that you want to do, and that's, that's, that's what it is.
- 0:22Because a lot of people just give up because they're getting the mindset. Okay. I didn't do it. Didn't work. I am done. And I've done it before, because while I'm talking from experience, I've gave up on things in the past because it didn't work right away. I think that's embracing change would be one thing that will help you in your mindset growth for sure.
- 0:23Another one is, I said it just a minute ago is practicing gratitude. There, we have to be grateful for so many things. In our lives in our career, but we don't think about because days go by and it's like all the same thing happens all The time I get up and I see my kids in the morning and then I have to head to work You should be grateful that you get up and see them because there's some people that don't they can't get up and see their Kids, you know, that's just one example or you get up and you get a job to go to Because there's lots of people that don't have that opportunity.
- 0:24You get up and you live in a certain place in the world and like, man, I'm happy to be here because other people don't have this opportunity to have what I have. But we don't think of that because there's so much going on in the world. So when you start to practice gratitude, and this is something I'm still working on.
- 0:25Like, I'm super grateful that you are all here today, hanging out with me. I am grateful for that, because you're taking time out of your life, wherever you're at in the world, to come here. I'm super grateful for that, and I appreciate all of you. And it's something that we don't think about, and if you don't practice it all the time, it's difficult.
- 0:26And I've read books on it. And I still have to work on it. And one of the biggest things, I was working with one of my students. They did a lot of jobs all week. And they did one job that didn't go really well. It actually failed real bad. And there was a lot of issues with it. And they dwelled on that the whole time, even a week later, two weeks later, dwelling on that one job that they made a mistake in it.
- 0:27Like I said, how many jobs did you do? All the rest of them I crushed. But that one job I, I failed at. Well, you want to be really grateful that you were able to fix all those other problems for all those other customers. And you're dwelling on this one that you made a mistake. How, what do you learn from that?
- 0:28That's the big thing. What did you learn from that? And how do you move on? And that, that. That's really hard. That's just developing the mindset. Okay. I made this mistake. I understand that okay My team lead had to go back and fix it Or I had to go back and fix it with some support and I got it done You got to be grateful that I was able to be notified.
- 0:29Someone let me know that there was a mistake now I understand the Mistake that I made we repaired it. We fix it. Yes. It was uncomfortable for the customer Maybe it cost them some money. Maybe it cost the business some money But what did you learn from that and then how can you grow from that and this comes back to being?
- 0:30Grateful that you had the opportunity that somebody at your company knew how to fix that and was able to support you And help you through that time and time again the more I practice gratitude. I see it helping me In my growth, another one would be continuous learning. When you're in the mindset that you're always going to learn that you need to learn, that you think you're, if you start to think that you know it all, that's, that's when you start to run into some issues, because especially in refrigeration, things are changing consistently.
- 0:31If you take someone that was a technician back in the 1950s or 60s and all of a sudden they come you drop them into 2024 now to work on their their equipment they're going to be like what how did you learn all this stuff like how long did it take you it must have took you decades to get here and we're learning it today.
- 0:32In months and years, not decades. This is a journey. We're all on a journey. You're here. Now, this career you're in the life here is a journey. And you've got to think of that. You've got to think that this is a journey. How do I make this journey the best for everybody around me? How do, how can I make this journey the best for me?
- 0:33Bring the most amount of value to everybody that is around me. Because when you start to think that way and get into the mindset is how I, how do I bring more value to other people? Stop thinking less about me, me, me, me, me. And think about how I can help more people. That's how it's going to help you.
- 0:34This is why I do stuff like this. And I'm talking to you here is what's in it for you. I am a hoping that I can help inspire you to make that, make that next step. And if I can be a part of that, man, I'm crushing it. Now, that's a, that's a huge goal for me to help millions of people make that next step.
- 0:35That's what excites me. That's a, it's kind of a, it comes from a Dale Carnegie book, how to win friends and is influenced people. I took a core Dale, Dale Carnegie once again, another game changing course. I know I talked about it a lot, but that course really got me, it really changed my mindset and outlook on how I communicate with people.
- 0:36How I talk to people and inside there's a there's a golden book. I highly recommend looking it up So when you get off your look up, uh, dale carney's golden, uh rules Another one for helping that mindset to achieve those goals to take action is positive self talk You, you have to start talking to yourself positively, really monitor what you're saying about yourself.
- 0:37Even if you're joking around, this is the thing, I see a lot of people doing it, I've even done it, joking around talking about, um, either talking about how they're not smart, or, or joking about how they messed up, or, or joking about their looks, whatever it is. That is negative self talk. Criticizing yourself is terrible.
- 0:38It's really bad. You have to stop doing that. If you do, monitor what you say. You gotta be like, man, I'm good at this. Or, I'm getting better at this. Because you don't see how you start to develop yourself. Because it's a long journey. Think about the last time you set up a system. You installed and set up a system.
- 0:39Versus the very first time. You did that. So it's really important to take a look at where you've come from. Positive self talk affects you, the way you think about yourself, as well as the people around you. One of the other things that really help, uh, that helps a lot of people, even helps me, is reflecting and meditating.
- 0:40So one of the things that I work on a lot is that I'm starting to reflect on what I've done. And you, this is what you should do, reflect on the last week. Some of the top legends in success that I've read is that a lot of them have a lot of self reflection. And reflections on their life and on their career and they do it on a constant, consistent basis.
- 0:41Daily, weekly, monthly. What went well, what didn't go well, how can I make things better for myself, for my family, for my team? And this is something that, once again, we're not taught a lot. Well, you should be reflecting on what you, you do. Maybe you have people around you that talk like that, but most people don't talk about that.
- 0:42It's just on to the next thing, on to the next thing, on to the next thing. And not going back and say, okay, how did I get to this point? What worked and how can I achieve that next step? Uh, meditation is another one, something that I've tried many times. I read lots of books on it and I keep consistently try to work on it now.
- 0:43Most of the meditation I do now is I call it breathing techniques or breathing meditation. And so this is where you take a minute, you, you reflect, you take a breather, you calm down, and this is where that breathing technique, that breathing meditation works for me, you take, you could take for two minutes, do box breathing, you, uh, breathe in for four seconds, hold it for four seconds, blow out for four seconds, and then hold it for four seconds, do that for two minutes.
- 0:44It's called box breathing. Especially if you're in a stressful situation, say with a customer. Go to your vehicle and do some box breathing. Yeah, once again, this may never did it. Maybe this feels weird for you and sounds weird for you. Because the first time I've done it, it sounded weird. It felt weird.
- 0:45That doesn't work. It works. Maybe it takes you months and months to get to it, but it works. You know, you'll feel your, your, that stress drop off you after a few minutes, not all of it, definitely not all of it, but it'll take you a level down. It'll take you a level down. There are so much more to, to the mindset.
- 0:46Physical activity is another huge one that really helps me. And another thing is try to find people who are positive. Like if you're at a company and there's a lot of negative people, don't, don't. Talk with them, just do your job, figure out ways that figure out people that are in your company that are, that are more positive.
- 0:47Talk with them, find people who are on that positive side, who have more positive self talk and you, maybe you are the one to influence the other ones. I said, maybe you do have a lot of people that are negative at your company and that comes from their friends and their family, but maybe you can influence them to be more positive, be more better at their.
- 0:48Own self-talk. Once again, I wanna thank you for taking the time to hang out with me. Uh, peace out everyone.
