- 0:55Speaker: Welcome to episode 10.
- 0:57Speaker: Tonight's episode, we're going
- 0:58Speaker: to be talking about something I
- 0:59Speaker: don't hear a whole lot about
- 1:01Speaker: Phantom trains.
- 1:04Speaker: I came across a strange article dated March six, twenty twenty
- 1:09Speaker: three, that reminded me of a situation my sister Barbie had
- 1:13Speaker: back in the nineties and had completely forgotten about it.
- 1:16Speaker: According to the Staffordshire
- 1:18Speaker: Live news site, there's a report
- 1:21Speaker: that terrifying Ghost Train
- 1:23Speaker: reported in Swadlincote by two
- 1:25Speaker: police officers.
- 1:27Speaker: The article goes on to say that
- 1:28Speaker: the eerie sound of a ghost train
- 1:30Speaker: running on a rail line that no
- 1:31Speaker: longer exists in Swadlincote has
- 1:33Speaker: been reported by two police
- 1:35Speaker: officers.
- 1:36Speaker: Police Constable Jo Stafford and Whitney Holmes Small were left
- 1:40Speaker: spooked after suddenly hearing the loud rumble of a train as
- 1:44Speaker: they were getting ready to go out on patrol at Swadlincote
- 1:47Speaker: police station in Civic Way.
- 1:49Speaker: They said they heard the sound of a locomotive getting closer
- 1:51Speaker: to them as the leaves on the nearby trees started to blow.
- 1:55Speaker: Then they heard the sound of a
- 1:56Speaker: train's horn, even though there
- 1:58Speaker: are no rail lines for miles
- 1:59Speaker: around.
- 2:03Speaker: Putting on their best detective hats.
- 2:05Speaker: They decided to make some inquiries and were shocked and
- 2:08Speaker: bemused by what they found.
- 2:10Speaker: It turns out that a railway did
- 2:12Speaker: indeed used to run to the back
- 2:13Speaker: of the police station with the
- 2:14Speaker: old Swadlincote railway station
- 2:16Speaker: existing, where the fire station
- 2:17Speaker: now sits.
- 2:19Speaker: The officers discovered that the
- 2:20Speaker: Midland Road bridge used to be
- 2:22Speaker: the crossing over the tracks,
- 2:24Speaker: with a tunnel long since blocked
- 2:25Speaker: up and lower Midland Road was
- 2:27Speaker: the walkway down to the
- 2:28Speaker: platforms.
- 2:29Speaker: The police spokesman said we would love to hear if anyone
- 2:32Speaker: else has any spooky experiences on this phantom train, or know
- 2:37Speaker: more about the long lost station, and would welcome
- 2:40Speaker: pictures or stories from those who may have been alive when it
- 2:42Speaker: was regularly used.
- 2:44Speaker: Passenger trains stopped running
- 2:46Speaker: through Swadlincote more than
- 2:48Speaker: seventy years ago in nineteen
- 2:49Speaker: forty seven.
- 2:51Speaker: Now this story, like I said,
- 2:53Speaker: reminded me of something that my
- 2:55Speaker: sister Barbie had told me back
- 2:56Speaker: in the nineties, and I've
- 2:59Speaker: interviewed her to talk about
- 3:01Speaker: what she experienced during a,
- 3:03Speaker: some sort of a revival that she
- 3:06Speaker: was attending at, I believe it
- 3:09Speaker: was triple T, I think that was
- 3:10Speaker: the organization.
- 3:12Speaker: And I believe that was located at Boonville, new Harmony and,
- 3:16Speaker: um, highway forty one.
- 3:18Speaker: So there's that railroad crossing right there by the
- 3:20Speaker: where Bi-Lo used to be.
- 3:21Speaker: And this is my interview with Barbie.
- 3:24Speaker: Uh, she's standing outside, so you hear some crickets and bugs
- 3:27Speaker: chirping in the background.
- 3:29Speaker: And as far as the timeline, I
- 3:30Speaker: believe this would have happened
- 3:32Speaker: around nineteen eighty nine,
- 3:33Speaker: nineteen ninety.
- 3:34Speaker: We're not completely sure on that.
- 3:36Speaker: But that's when she I think she
- 3:38Speaker: thinks she was about eleven
- 3:39Speaker: years old.
- 3:39Speaker: So that would put that around about that time frame.
- 3:43Speaker: So this is my interview with Barbie.
- 3:46Speaker: Because I went to that triple A thing, the triple A meeting out
- 3:50Speaker: on forty one that I'm pretty sure is where you turn at the
- 3:55Speaker: forty one, you know, at the, um, you know, where they built the
- 3:59Speaker: Bi-Lo and all that.
- 4:00Speaker: It's not there anymore.
- 4:02Speaker: But that railroad track behind
- 4:03Speaker: there is whenever the when the
- 4:06Speaker: preacher said, anyone who wants
- 4:08Speaker: to get saved, come up here, bow
- 4:10Speaker: your heads.
- 4:11Speaker: And as soon as he did this, no train.
- 4:14Speaker: There was nothing went by blowing a whistle and wind blew.
- 4:18Speaker: You couldn't hear the pastor and
- 4:21Speaker: there was thousands of people
- 4:22Speaker: there.
- 4:23Speaker: So I wish we could find the article that was in the paper,
- 4:26Speaker: because I remember coming home and telling dad.
- 4:28Speaker: And then I think it was like in that Sunday paper.
- 4:31Speaker: So which was neat because, I mean, there was just so many
- 4:33Speaker: people who witnessed nothing, you know what I mean?
- 4:35Speaker: There was no train to where it was like, what in the world?
- 4:41Speaker: Everybody heard wind was blowing, chairs blew over
- 4:43Speaker: because people were standing and everybody was on that field.
- 4:47Speaker: So it was across from Bi-Lo.
- 4:49Speaker: I'm pretty sure that's where it was.
- 4:50Speaker: If not, it was the outside.
- 4:53Speaker: It was like outside revival almost.
- 4:56Speaker: So it was like Bethel Temple
- 4:57Speaker: Crossroads, like all these big
- 4:59Speaker: churches.
- 4:59Speaker: So for me, I was, I think fifth grade maybe.
- 5:03Speaker: And so it was tons of kids and, um, like youth pastors and a
- 5:08Speaker: bunch of just different.
- 5:10Speaker: I mean, people came from out of town.
- 5:11Speaker: So as soon as the pastor started talking about getting saved and
- 5:15Speaker: asking God in your life is when and telling people to come up
- 5:19Speaker: front, people will pray for you, or you can stay where you're at
- 5:21Speaker: and say this prayer.
- 5:25Speaker: Choo choo and literally win.
- 5:28Speaker: And I mean everybody's mouth.
- 5:29Speaker: I mean, I mean, it wasn't, it was terrifying because it was
- 5:33Speaker: like our there were so many people to where it was like, are
- 5:36Speaker: we all seeing this?
- 5:38Speaker: Like, I mean, are like hearing it because there's no train.
- 5:41Speaker: There was no train like the, the stoplight didn't across the
- 5:46Speaker: road, you know, like, obviously there's the stoplight to where
- 5:49Speaker: the, the bar comes down.
- 5:50Speaker: It didn't come down.
- 5:53Speaker: It was crazy, crazy.
- 5:55Speaker: I was probably maybe eleven.
- 5:59Speaker: And I mean, it was so exciting being that young.
- 6:01Speaker: And then like, if, if, if it would have just been us, no one
- 6:05Speaker: would have believed it.
- 6:06Speaker: But I mean, with so many people,
- 6:08Speaker: you just couldn't deny what just
- 6:09Speaker: happened.
- 6:10Speaker: Do you know what I mean?
- 6:11Speaker: Like it was just shock and awe and it was and it and it really
- 6:16Speaker: teetered the whole night because after that, I mean, obviously it
- 6:20Speaker: lasted as long as the treatment lasts maybe two, three minutes.
- 6:24Speaker: And, and everyone after that, the excitement, it was like,
- 6:29Speaker: what just happened?
- 6:30Speaker: You know, you can't calm kids, kids down after that, you know,
- 6:34Speaker: I mean, we, we shortly left.
- 6:35Speaker: So I necessarily don't think
- 6:37Speaker: anyone ever went up or they ever
- 6:39Speaker: finished that prayer, which I
- 6:41Speaker: mean, if that was the goal of,
- 6:43Speaker: you know, the devil, I mean, it
- 6:45Speaker: worked because I mean, it just I
- 6:48Speaker: mean, it they they didn't
- 6:50Speaker: finish.
- 6:51Speaker: I mean, it was just I remember the pastor was talking about I
- 6:53Speaker: mean, the kid, I mean, people were just so astounded by it.
- 6:58Speaker: I mean, like, I remember I was
- 6:59Speaker: talking like our, we over the
- 7:01Speaker: youth pastor was I was in fifth
- 7:03Speaker: grade.
- 7:03Speaker: I was with April and, uh, and, or my friend April.
- 7:07Speaker: And I remember like he kept telling everybody, be quiet.
- 7:10Speaker: It was like, come on.
- 7:11Speaker: I remember like laughing like,
- 7:13Speaker: dude, imaginary train just went
- 7:15Speaker: by.
- 7:15Speaker: You'd be quiet, you know what I mean?
- 7:17Speaker: Like, kind of joking around
- 7:18Speaker: about like, come on, like, like
- 7:20Speaker: we're not going to talk about
- 7:21Speaker: it.
- 7:21Speaker: Like, and everybody just kept checking like, even like on the
- 7:24Speaker: way I got picked up and I remember just being that
- 7:28Speaker: excited, even talking about on the way home like it still was.
- 7:32Speaker: It definitely like people picked the chairs up, everyone like who
- 7:36Speaker: was closer to the front, like they moved back.
- 7:38Speaker: So I mean, it was just like this
- 7:39Speaker: chaos for the whole time it was
- 7:42Speaker: going on.
- 7:43Speaker: So it was almost like there were so many people that to where in
- 7:47Speaker: youth to where people were just trying to find the kids if they
- 7:50Speaker: walked away or some people, some people ran up to the front to
- 7:53Speaker: see, you know, I mean, we, I was in the back and I still felt the
- 7:58Speaker: wind and it was just as loud as it would have been a train.
- 8:01Speaker: And us sitting in a field next to it.
- 8:05Speaker: I've never had any experiences with a phantom train or anything
- 8:09Speaker: along those lines, and I haven't really heard a whole lot about
- 8:11Speaker: that whole phenomenon.
- 8:14Speaker: I did a little research and
- 8:15Speaker: found that there are some famous
- 8:17Speaker: instances of phantom trains, for
- 8:20Speaker: instance, the Lincoln's Funeral
- 8:22Speaker: Train.
- 8:24Speaker: Apparently it's said to run regularly from Washington, D.C.
- 8:27Speaker: to Springfield, Illinois, around the time of the anniversary of
- 8:30Speaker: Abraham Lincoln's death.
- 8:32Speaker: And apparently it stops, watches, and clocks in
- 8:35Speaker: surrounding areas as it passes.
- 8:37Speaker: And there are apparently other various stories across the, the
- 8:41Speaker: world actually, um, regarding these phantom trains.
- 8:44Speaker: So I don't know what to think of this.
- 8:46Speaker: Um, have you ever had any experience with a phantom train?
- 8:52Speaker: If you have, or if you actually attended that revival back in
- 8:56Speaker: the early nineties.
- 8:58Speaker: Feel free to jump on, um, my discord at RiverCityMystery.com/Discord
- 9:03Speaker: and feel free to share your story.
- 9:08Speaker: Thank you for joining me for
- 9:09Speaker: this episode of River City

- 9:11Speaker: Until next time, take care.
