- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:14It's Thursday, it's the 5th of June.
- 0:17And how are you going? I hope you're going well.
- 0:19I hope this week's treated you well and I hope our beginning of
- 0:22our journey through Deuteronomy is treating you well.
- 0:26It can be a little bit confronting as we encounter
- 0:29these writings written at a different time and a different
- 0:32place where the norms of writing were quite different.
- 0:36And one thing that I've mentioned in the past, but it's
- 0:38worth mentioning again, is that these historical narratives
- 0:43captured in the ancient Near East have a certain way that
- 0:47they go about describing A comprehensive victory.
- 0:51And that is to say that the victorious army slaughtered all
- 0:55of the people, men, women and children.
- 0:58And we've already heard that a number of Times.
- 1:00Now, this does not literally mean that they went around
- 1:04stabbing babies, killing toddlers and murdering pregnant
- 1:07women and old women in their beds.
- 1:09Now, this is simply the way that authors at the time wrote a
- 1:14comprehensive victory that left no resistance.
- 1:18And that's why at other times in the Old Testament, you will hear
- 1:21stories about the original inhabitants of those lands, even
- 1:26after, quote unquote, every man, woman and child had been killed.
- 1:30So that is simply the way that things were written.
- 1:33And at the time, that would have been well understood as not
- 1:35literal, but a literary device to describe comprehensive
- 1:40victory and power. And you will see that God is a
- 1:44God of grace even in this Old Testament space through today's
- 1:48reading, as he creates these cities of refuge for people who
- 1:51would otherwise have faced the sword for sure.
- 1:55So let's continue this journey as we read together Deuteronomy
- 1:58chapter 4. And now, Israel, listen
- 2:11carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to
- 2:15teach you. Obey them so that you may live,
- 2:19so that you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God
- 2:23of your ancestors, is giving you.
- 2:25Do not add to or subtract from these commands I'm giving you.
- 2:30Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I'm giving
- 2:34you. You saw for yourself what the
- 2:36Lord did to you at Baal Payo. There the Lord your God
- 2:40destroyed everyone who had worshipped Baal, the God of
- 2:43Paio. But all of you who were faithful
- 2:46to the Lord your God are still alive to day, everyone of you.
- 2:51Look, I now teach you these decrees and regulations, just as
- 2:56the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may obey them in the
- 3:00land you are about to enter and occupy.
- 3:03Obey them completely, and you will display your wisdom and
- 3:07intelligence among the surrounding nations.
- 3:10When they hear all these decrees, they will exclaim how
- 3:14wise and prudent are the people of this great nation.
- 3:18For what great nation has a God as near to them as the Lord?
- 3:23Your God is near to us whenever we call on Him, and what great
- 3:28nation has decrees and regulations as righteous and
- 3:32fair as this body of instructions that I'm giving you
- 3:35today? But watch out.
- 3:38Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen.
- 3:43Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you
- 3:46live, and be sure to pass them on to your children and
- 3:50grandchildren. Never forget the day when you
- 3:53stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, where He told
- 3:58me, Summon the people before me, and I will personally instruct
- 4:03them. Then they will learn to fear me
- 4:06as long as they live, and they will teach their children to
- 4:09fear me also. You came near and stood at the
- 4:12foot of the mountain while flames from the mountain shot
- 4:15into the sky. The mountain was shrouded in
- 4:18black clouds and deep darkness, and the Lord spoke to you from
- 4:23the heart of the fire. You heard the sound of His
- 4:27words, but didn't see his form. There was only a voice.
- 4:31He proclaimed His Covenant, the 10 commandments which He
- 4:35commanded you to keep and which He wrote on 2 stone tablets.
- 4:40It was at that time that the Lord commanded me to teach you
- 4:43His decrees and regulations so you would obey them in the land
- 4:48you are about to enter and occupy.
- 4:52But be very careful, you did not see the Lord's form on that day.
- 4:56He spoke to you from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai.
- 5:00Do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form,
- 5:05whether of a man or a woman, an animal on the ground, a bird in
- 5:09the sky, a small animal that scurries along the ground, or a
- 5:13fish in the deepest sea. And when you look up into the
- 5:17sky and see the sun, moon and stars, all the forces of heaven,
- 5:22don't be seduced into worshipping them.
- 5:25The Lord your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth.
- 5:29Remember that the Lord rescued you from the iron smelting
- 5:33furnace of Egypt in order to make you his very own people and
- 5:38His special possession, which is what you are to day.
- 5:42But the Lord was angry with me because of you.
- 5:45He vowed that I would not cross the Jordan River into the good
- 5:49land the Lord your God is giving you as your special possession.
- 5:54You will cross the Jordan to occupy the land, but I will not.
- 5:59Instead, I will die here on the east side of the river.
- 6:04So be careful not to break the covenant the Lord your God has
- 6:08made with you. Do not make idols of any shape
- 6:11or form, for the Lord your God has forbidden this.
- 6:15The Lord your God is a devouring fire.
- 6:18He is a jealous God. In the future, when you have
- 6:22children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long
- 6:25time, do not corrupt yourselves by making idols of any kind.
- 6:31This is evil in the sight of the Lord your God and will arouse
- 6:35His anger. To day.
- 6:37I call on heaven and earth as witnesses against you.
- 6:42If you break My covenant, you will quickly disappear from the
- 6:45land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
- 6:49You will live there only a short time.
- 6:51Then you will be utterly destroyed, for the Lord will
- 6:55scatter you among the nations there.
- 6:57Only a few of you will survive there in a foreign land.
- 7:01You will worship idols made from wood and stone, gods that
- 7:05neither see nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
- 7:09But from there you will search again for the Lord your God.
- 7:13If you search for Him with all your heart and soul, you will
- 7:17find Him in the distant future. When you are suffering all these
- 7:22things, you will finally return to the Lord your God and listen
- 7:26to what He tells you. For the Lord your God is a
- 7:29merciful God. He will not abandon you or
- 7:32destroy you, or forget the solemn covenant He made with
- 7:36your ancestors. Now search all of history from
- 7:40the time God created people on the earth until now, and search
- 7:45from one end of the heavens to the other.
- 7:48Has anything as great as this ever been seen or heard before?
- 7:53Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire
- 7:58as you did and survived? Has any other God dared to take
- 8:03a nation for himself out of another nation by means of
- 8:06trials, miraculous signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, a
- 8:12powerful arm, and terrifying acts?
- 8:16Yet that is what the Lord your God did for you in Egypt right
- 8:20before your eyes. He showed you these things so
- 8:23you would know that the Lord is God and there is no other.
- 8:29He let you hear His voice from heaven so He could instruct you.
- 8:33He let you see His great fire here on earth so He could speak
- 8:38to you from it. Because He loved your ancestors,
- 8:42He chose to bless their descendants, and He personally
- 8:46brought you out of Egypt with a great display of power.
- 8:50He drove out nations far greater than you so He could bring you
- 8:54in and give you their land as your special possession as it is
- 8:59today. So remember this and keep it
- 9:02firmly in mind. The Lord is God both in heaven
- 9:07and on earth, and there is no other.
- 9:11If you obey all the decrees and commands I'm giving you today,
- 9:15all will be well with you and your children.
- 9:18I'm giving you these instructions so you will enjoy a
- 9:21long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you for all
- 9:26time. Then Moses set apart three
- 9:30cities of refuge east of the Jordan River.
- 9:33Anyone who killed another person unintentionally, without
- 9:37previous hostility could flee there to live in safety.
- 9:42These were the cities Bazaar on the wilderness plateau for the
- 9:47tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead for the tribe of Gad.
- 9:51Golan in Bashan for the tribe of Manasseh.
- 9:56This is the body of instruction that Moses presented to the
- 9:59Israelites. These are the laws, decrees, and
- 10:03regulations that Moses gave to the people of Israel when they
- 10:06left Egypt as they camped in the valley near Beth Payor, east of
- 10:10the Jordan River. This land was formerly occupied
- 10:14by the Amorites under King Scion, who ruled from Heshbon,
- 10:19but Moses and the Israelites destroyed him and his people
- 10:22when they came out of Egypt. Israel took possession of this
- 10:25land and that of King Og of Bashan, the two Amorite kings
- 10:30east of the Jordan. So Israel conquered the entire
- 10:34area from Arroa at the edge of the Arnon Gorge, all the way to
- 10:38Mount Syrian, also called Mount Hermon, and they conquered the
- 10:44eastern Bank of the Jordan River as far South as the Dead Sea
- 10:48below the slopes of Pisgah. Our Lord, you make it so simple.
- 11:03You make this covenant with your people, and all you ask of them
- 11:08is to trust you and to never worship another.
- 11:13And Lord, as history would tell us, that was too much of an ask
- 11:16for them. And so, Lord, you have made a
- 11:19new covenant. You have sent your son, You have
- 11:23given up something of great value, something so precious to
- 11:27yourself because you just want more than anything else, a way
- 11:33for your chosen possession, your special people.
- 11:36That's us, to be able to be close to you.
- 11:41We don't understand this good and complete love that you have
- 11:45for us, but there it is, and here's the evidence.
- 11:50And so we thank you for your love for us.
- 11:53We thank you for making a way to bring us back into your arms.
- 11:58Let me thank you for Jesus and we pray all this in his saving
- 12:04and holy name. Amen.
