Latest / The 405 Payroll / Oklahoma’s Low-Hire Job Market and How to Break In
Transcript
- 0:13If you have spent the last few weeks throwing your resume into online job boards and
- 0:18hearing absolutely nothing back, you are not crazy.
- 0:22It turns out the job market in Oklahoma is playing a very specific,
- 0:26almost invisible trick on us right now.
- 0:30Yeah, it feels like sending your resume into a literal black hole,
- 0:35right?
- 0:36You press submit, you wait, and er...
- 0:40radio silence.
- 0:42But wait, why is that happening if everyone keeps saying unemployment is still super
- 0:47low?
- 0:48That is the exact mystery.
- 0:50Cortney Cowley and Chase Farha over at the Kansas City Fed just put out this
- 0:55incredible economic study on Oklahoma.
- 0:58They found that our state unemployment rate is sitting at a really low 3.6 percent,
- 1:04but at the same time, the monthly hires rate in Oklahoma fell sharply to 3.1
- 1:09percent.
- 1:10Hold on.
- 1:11Say those numbers again?
- 1:13Unemployment is low at 3.6 percent, but hiring dropped to 3.1 percent?
- 1:20How do those two things live in the same universe?
- 1:23Economists are calling it a low hire, low fire market.
- 1:27The survey shows about 71 percent of local businesses did not reduce their overall
- 1:32headcount recently.
- 1:34But instead of hiring new people or filling open seats, 27 percent of firms are just
- 1:40cutting back employee hours or quietly closing job postings without backfilling
- 1:44them.
- 1:45Ah, okay, let me see if I got this right.
- 1:48Companies are holding onto the staff they already have because they are worried
- 1:52about economic uncertainty, but they are absolutely freezing new openings.
- 1:58So nobody is getting fired, but nobody is getting hired either.
- 2:02Spot on.
- 2:04It creates reduced labor churn.
- 2:06And here is another plot twist from that Kansas City Fed data,
- 2:11everyone assumes artificial intelligence is swallowing all the jobs,
- 2:15right?
- 2:16Oh, totally.
- 2:17You hear people talk like algorithms took over every corporate office overnight.
- 2:22Well, in Oklahoma, only 5 percent of employers surveyed reported using AI as a
- 2:28direct substitute for hiring human workers.
- 2:31Meanwhile, 38 percent said they use AI as a tool to boost the productivity of the
- 2:36staff they already have.
- 2:38So robots are not replacing you, but employers do want people who know how to use
- 2:44those efficiency tools.
- 2:46Man, that is such a huge relief to hear, but it still leaves job seekers in a tough
- 2:52spot.
- 2:53If online portals are frozen over, how on earth do you actually get a job right now?
- 3:00You completely bypass the online algorithm trap.
- 3:04You have to go where the active, direct hire recruiters are standing in person.
- 3:10Events hosted by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission or regional hiring
- 3:15fairs like Oklahoma Works.
- 3:17Like physical walk in events?
- 3:20People still do those?
- 3:22Yes, absolutely.
- 3:24Right now in the metro area, recruiters at those live events are hiring on the spot
- 3:29for entry level warehouse operations, logistics, and assembly roles paying anywhere
- 3:35from 17 dollars and 50 cents to 19 dollars and 25 cents an hour.
- 3:40You know, back when I was radio hosting, I remember talking to so many listeners who
- 3:45were just mentally exhausted from screaming into the digital void.
- 3:50Sending out fifty resumes a week without a single human response just destroys your
- 3:55spirit.
- 3:56But walking into a room, shaking a recruiter hand, and pitching your work ethic face
- 4:02to face?
- 4:03That changes your whole mindset instantly.
- 4:06It really does.
- 4:08It puts you back in control instead of waiting on an automated email system.
- 4:13Okay, so if someone is currently making around 17 or 18 bucks an hour and wants to
- 4:19bump that up to say, 22 to 25 dollars an hour, what is the fastest track that does
- 4:25not require going into mountain high student debt?
- 4:28You look at targeted short term credentials.
- 4:31Metro Tech at 1900 Springlake Drive runs the EMPOWER program,
- 4:36and there are tuition grants through the Central Oklahoma Workforce Innovation
- 4:40Board.
- 4:41We are talking 6 to 12 week certificate tracks.
- 4:44Wait, 6 to 12 weeks?
- 4:47What kind of jobs are we talking about in that timeframe?
- 4:50Commercial driver licenses, clinical medical assistants, precision manufacturing
- 4:56assembly.
- 4:57Roles that move your floor straight up to 25 dollars an hour because local employers
- 5:02are actively looking for those specific technical skillsets.
- 5:06That is huge.
- 5:08But er, what about the immediate gap?
- 5:10Like, say you need an extra 200 bucks this weekend just to cover an unexpected
- 5:15expense while you are retraining or job hunting?
- 5:19Right, cash flow gaps are real.
- 5:22Look at short term, realistic local levers.
- 5:25Taking on a weekend fulfillment shift, running peer to peer delivery apps during
- 5:30peak dinner hours, or doing a fast purge of unused household goods on local
- 5:35marketplaces.
- 5:36You can pull in 150 to 250 dollars in quick cash to keep your head above water.
- 5:42Okay, so you get the quick cash, you get the short term certificate,
- 5:46you bump your pay.
- 5:47But how do you stop that extra income from just getting wiped out by electricity
- 5:52bills or higher rent?
- 5:54That is where utility anchors come in.
- 5:57Organizations like the Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City offer LIHEAP utility
- 6:03assistance and free financial coaching.
- 6:06If you lock down energy assistance while your income is lower,
- 6:10any new raise you get actually stays in your bank account as real savings instead of
- 6:15disappearing into electric bill spikes.
- 6:18Man, that makes so much sense.
- 6:20Protect your household baseline while building your earning power.
- 6:25Exactly.
- 6:26So here is your daily action step before 5 PM today.
- 6:30Do not submit another random online application into the void.
- 6:35Instead, look up the Metro Tech EMPOWER program or register online for an upcoming
- 6:40OESC direct hiring event.
- 6:43Take one concrete action that puts you face to face with real opportunity.
- 6:49Stop fighting the algorithms, go meet the actual human beings hiring right now.
- 6:54Love it.
- 6:55Alright, good chatting, talk soon!
