- 0:00Speaker 1: Man cannot live on bread alone. Some butter would be nice.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's one more thing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm before we get there. Joe has a cold. I've
- 0:10Speaker 2: got a question, yes for everyone, because the cold is
- 0:13Speaker 2: sweeping through my house. I bravely have not caught it yet.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Superior character, obviously, I try hard, made of stronger stuff.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Must be that healthy diet of yours.
- 0:25Speaker 1: What deed?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I've got a pretty good immune system
- 0:28Speaker 2: for stuff like normal diseases that go around. I usually
- 0:31Speaker 2: don't get them. What would it be like if I
- 0:34Speaker 2: ate better? I might be impenetrable.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You could be well, you're you're just at the tail
- 0:41Speaker 1: end of raising little kids. Now you have teenagers. So
- 0:44Speaker 1: you have been enrolled in the marine boot camp of
- 0:49Speaker 1: immune systems raising children.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So I've got a number of people in my orbit
- 0:55Speaker 2: who take nothing when they get a cold. They don't
- 0:57Speaker 2: they believe it's all bs, and they don't take anything.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I take a few things. Do you take anything? Do
- 1:03Speaker 2: you think anything works? Katie's nodding her head. We'll start
- 1:05Speaker 2: with you.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I take theraflu.
- 1:07Speaker 2: You take theraflu. I have found that to work. I
- 1:10Speaker 2: don't care if it's placebia, if I suffer from Placebia.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Doesn't matter to me. It's as I feel better. I
- 1:17Speaker 2: don't need anybody to tell me it doesn't. Actually, I
- 1:19Speaker 2: don't care. I feel better.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Don't take anything like tile and all or I view profen.
- 1:23Speaker 1: At one point I was down with the zinc. Yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 1: but I couldn't figure out what form. And I just
- 1:28Speaker 1: kind of remember when nobody got a cold during COVID. Yeah,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I've fallen out of I don't remember what to do anymore.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I got a bottle of uh, it's immuno something or
- 1:39Speaker 2: other they say take when a cold first, you first
- 1:41Speaker 2: start to get the symptoms of a cold, and it's
- 1:43Speaker 2: zinc and a couple other things. And I don't know
- 1:45Speaker 2: if they do anything, but I feel like if I
- 1:47Speaker 2: take that, if I do get the cold, it's much milder. Again,
- 1:51Speaker 2: might be in my head, I don't care. I also
- 1:53Speaker 2: use zycham, yeah, which is awesome.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I've heard people recommend sinuses and stuff.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I tend not to trust my own experience
- 2:01Speaker 1: because the data set isn't big enough. But I don't
- 2:03Speaker 1: I don't know. I have no information that there's anything
- 2:06Speaker 1: wrong with taking that stuff, And what the hell it worst?
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's harmless but you're not a take nothing guy, or no,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I am pretty much, although I'm thinking now that you
- 2:16Speaker 1: mentioned it, maybe I'll take some tile and all or something.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I actually, my symptoms aren't that bad other than just
- 2:20Speaker 1: overwhelming fatigue at this point.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Now, do you guys take Nike will? And that's what
- 2:24Speaker 4: I do, and I go to sleep afraid of it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: You're afraid of nighttime nikewill?
- 2:29Speaker 5: Yeah, well, with our hours, I don't. If I wake
- 2:32Speaker 5: up groggy or over sleep, that's not good.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't. Alcoholics are not supposed to take nyquill
- 2:39Speaker 2: because it's basically taking a shot.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Alcohol to help yougin sleep. Yeah, I don't for the
- 2:44Speaker 1: reason Katie cided. I just it's hard enough to get
- 2:46Speaker 1: up in the morning and be semi sharp, yeah, listeners
- 2:49Speaker 1: of the first hour of the radio show or not
- 2:51Speaker 1: very sharp.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Well, one thing with giving your kids stuff, you kind
- 2:57Speaker 2: of have a better gauge of whether it's actually doing
- 2:59Speaker 2: anything or especially when they're little, they're too young to
- 3:02Speaker 2: like and uh, most stuff I don't think does much.
- 3:07Speaker 1: A right. Oh yeah, absolutely, Remember when that one thing
- 3:10Speaker 1: that was ubiquitous on the still it drug store shelves
- 3:13Speaker 1: of America.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's still in every freaking drug I buy, Every cold
- 3:18Speaker 2: medicine you buy still has that fenel en ryn or
- 3:20Speaker 2: whatever it's called in it, and the government announced it
- 3:23Speaker 2: does nothing.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Were completely different.
- 3:26Speaker 2: The FDA said it does zero zero, it's a nothing
- 3:32Speaker 2: and it's a cold medicine. Still, you're wasting your time
- 3:36Speaker 2: on the fenyl helamelo melow Hill fell. Hell, well, how
- 3:40Speaker 2: do you say it, Katie? You're looking at it, but
- 3:45Speaker 2: so it's on yours. What are you looking at right there?
- 3:47Speaker 3: This is daquil.
- 3:48Speaker 5: When I had this flu last time around, I took
- 3:52Speaker 5: everything under the sun that I could get my hands
- 3:54Speaker 5: on because I was trying to get rid of that crap.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Uh yeah, it's in here too.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Every cold medicine in every aisle of every store that
- 4:03Speaker 2: sells cold medicine has drugs full of that, and the
- 4:06Speaker 2: government announced it doesn't do anything. I just think that's weird,
- 4:13Speaker 2: just counting on that people don't know.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It because it's funny, yes, say, oh yeah, yeah, Well
- 4:20Speaker 1: the percentage of people you know. Honestly, we've posed this
- 4:24Speaker 1: question in many contexts in recent days and through the years.
- 4:28Speaker 1: What percentage of Americans? One of us will ask the other,
- 4:31Speaker 1: do you think knows that any story or anything. Yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and in this case, what percentage do you think could
- 4:37Speaker 1: tell you? Oh? Yeah, fenel elephant here is it was worthless?
- 4:42Speaker 1: I remember that in a story, be a very very
- 4:44Speaker 1: small number.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I suppose you're right.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Okay, this says fedenah left freen FENI la freene.
- 4:50Speaker 1: That's the way he got Okay, fenelefrene, fenelefrine, I like
- 4:53Speaker 1: your guys, is better than elephant.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Well, since it doesn't do anything, I'll call whatever I
- 4:57Speaker 2: want to call it. It's a bunch of sh wow, unnecessary, just.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Hilarious.
- 5:09Speaker 2: What you got too much blood in your body is
- 5:11Speaker 2: your problem?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Right? You got to bleed your feet. You don't have
- 5:15Speaker 1: the uh stomach to actually slice open your own feet.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Isn't that what killed George Washington?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah? Well it hastened his death certainly. Yeah, I don't
- 5:25Speaker 1: know why. Well, I'm a bit of a history freak
- 5:29Speaker 1: and a bit of a medical history hobbyist, and a
- 5:34Speaker 1: great admirer of George Washington. That was I listened with
- 5:38Speaker 1: rapt attention and like committed it all the memory there
- 5:41Speaker 1: in his bedroom where he died, as you're there by
- 5:45Speaker 1: his bedside, probably a recreation. But and they explained that, yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 1: he had what do they think he had? I can't
- 5:52Speaker 1: remember the disease. I didn't memorize it that effectively obviously,
- 5:55Speaker 1: but the doctors in he probably did not have a uh.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He was an honorable and elderly man anyway that the
- 6:05Speaker 1: doctors in treating him for what was probably whatever the hell,
- 6:08Speaker 1: just kept saying, yeah, we got to bleed the feet
- 6:10Speaker 1: and let out the bad humors. And he'd like rally
- 6:13Speaker 1: a little bit, and they'd think, yeah, we probably ought
- 6:15Speaker 1: to bleed his feet more. He what if you don't
- 6:19Speaker 1: have enough red blood cells? Anemia?
- 6:22Speaker 2: He pretty much.
- 6:25Speaker 5: And it was all that for a throat infection. Is
- 6:28Speaker 5: what the interwebs say, too much blood is your problem? Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 5: streptococcal infection or something. He should have taken some phenahell
- 6:35Speaker 5: element a little bit elephant.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Uh. So I started out the podcast. I figured I
- 6:42Speaker 1: might as well pay it off. Uh. And this is
- 6:43Speaker 1: this is pleasant and delightful. A bread making craze has
- 6:47Speaker 1: begun in my extended family. Oh cool, Yeah, I remember
- 6:51Speaker 1: during the pandemic when people started doing that, and so,
- 6:54Speaker 1: uh yeah, oddly enough, it began with a relative who
- 6:58Speaker 1: has some sensory issues, Jack, something you know about, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: certainly I do, having raised an autistic daughter. But anyway, uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: a certain homemade bread seemed to be great, and it
- 7:11Speaker 1: happens to be unfreaking believably delicious. I'm going to keep
- 7:16Speaker 1: things vague to protect the innocent, but say my it
- 7:19Speaker 1: was my uncle Morty, and we would make reference to
- 7:23Speaker 1: Morty bread and how good it was. And Morty when
- 7:27Speaker 1: he would come for a visit would always leave a loaf.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And when I was through with Morty bread, I was very,
- 7:33Speaker 1: very sad because it was so good.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I leave work today.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Oh God, Jesus boy. You know Jack, you know what, Katie,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I just do you want to go off into our
- 7:44Speaker 1: own thing?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Would you tell me?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Wouldn't ever? Yeah, Michael, you're hired.
- 7:50Speaker 3: And he can watch Jack. We're out of here.
- 7:53Speaker 1: This is going to be like in this this is
- 7:55Speaker 1: this happened to me at least once in my youth.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It was explained to me, Hey, the band has got breakup.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We just we can't do this and it's too much
- 8:02Speaker 1: trouble to do that, And so we're breaking up. And
- 8:04Speaker 1: then a week later here, yeah, they're playing. They just
- 8:07Speaker 1: got a different dude, play your instrument. Oh my god. Yeah. Wow,
- 8:12Speaker 1: So that's what we're doing to Jack right now. Yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 1: we I'm really not gonna do it radio anymore.
- 8:17Speaker 2: That's like they break up with you because I just
- 8:19Speaker 2: I just don't think I should be in a relationship
- 8:21Speaker 2: right now. And then you see him walking down the
- 8:22Speaker 2: street holding hands with somebody next weekend.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Oh okay, Well I'm going into bread making. You guys
- 8:28Speaker 5: have fun. Okay, the bread making, I am. That's something
- 8:32Speaker 5: I would like to actually learn how to do one
- 8:34Speaker 5: because I love homemade bread and it just seems like
- 8:36Speaker 5: it could be a cool craft.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And I pronounced, having enjoyed some Morti bread and then
- 8:42Speaker 1: switched back to the regular stuff. Oh my god, it's
- 8:44Speaker 1: just so much better. And so Judy got a new
- 8:47Speaker 1: mixer because our old mixer's motor was kind of funky,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and so now she's got this big, like industry looking mixer.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And she made a couple of loafs of what's known
- 8:57Speaker 1: as the mort He bred. And my lost student daughter
- 9:01Speaker 1: made herself some bread, although one of her two cats
- 9:04Speaker 1: stepped on the bread as it was proofing, which I
- 9:07Speaker 1: guess means rising or something. Yeah, and so one of
- 9:10Speaker 1: the loaves is robust and very healthy looking, and the
- 9:13Speaker 1: other loaf is really just excuse me loaf because I
- 9:16Speaker 1: can't ruined it. Damn cats.
- 9:18Speaker 2: The cat stepped on the bread. But you're gonna go
- 9:20Speaker 2: ahead and make it anyway, doesn't that mean?
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I mean you put it in the oven
- 9:25Speaker 1: at three hundred and fifty degrees for a half an
- 9:27Speaker 1: hour or whatever. It is fine.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I don't know that I want letter box bread.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah. This tastes a little like whatever a cat walks through.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Well, now, I will tell you this. Having baby sat
- 9:37Speaker 1: my daughter's cats for three weeks over Christmas, she does
- 9:40Speaker 1: occasionally get ready to bleeper. She does occasionally refer to
- 9:44Speaker 1: their shit mittens because they, you know, they pooh out,
- 9:50Speaker 1: they pooh in the box, then they walk out of
- 9:53Speaker 1: the box.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Sure, that's see, that's not a tasty term, like they dip.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Their taws and some paus and some sort of disinfectant
- 10:05Speaker 1: on their way out. Must clean the paws after one booze,
- 10:08Speaker 1: You though, they don't do that shit.
- 10:12Speaker 2: That's a great term. It is, and discuss we've got
- 10:16Speaker 2: cats and Michael, I'm going to use that term patting
- 10:19Speaker 2: around in ship mittens over your house.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I'm gonna start calling people ship mittens. This is great.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, this is charming, folks. I apologize.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I work with this guy and working with the ship
- 10:29Speaker 2: mitten told me the other day.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But a bunch of ship mittens around here? Why do
- 10:36Speaker 1: I put up with it?
- 10:37Speaker 2: I know?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Anyway? Where was I? Oh? I was going to talk
- 10:41Speaker 1: about the various things that are so far superior in
- 10:47Speaker 1: their homemade version, right, but we've kind of drifted so
- 10:50Speaker 1: far away from it. Like I brewed beer for a while.
- 10:53Speaker 1: My brother bruise beer and it's so good. He's actually
- 10:57Speaker 1: got the cooler with two taps, and anytime we visit
- 11:01Speaker 1: his house he has home brewed beer in kegs on tap. Wow,
- 11:07Speaker 1: icy cold on his patio. It's ridiculous. Oh, it's although.
- 11:11Speaker 1: If I lived like that, I would be a flaming
- 11:13Speaker 1: alcoholic in three hundred and seventy five pounds, And what
- 11:15Speaker 1: if there's a downside, But I'd be happy and I
- 11:18Speaker 1: wouldn't be thinking about my problems, and people would be
- 11:20Speaker 1: more interesting. But bread might be at the top of
- 11:24Speaker 1: the list. Beer is close, I say, cookies. And I'm
- 11:29Speaker 1: a bit of a purest, maybe a bit of a
- 11:32Speaker 1: pain in the ass. I know that's hard to imagine.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I will not eat store bought cookies. I just I
- 11:38Speaker 1: won't because the calories and the taste. No.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Yeah, oh those cookies that I sent you guys, the
- 11:44Speaker 5: picture of of her break that I made. They were
- 11:46Speaker 5: so I know homemade cookie is it's it's just it's
- 11:51Speaker 5: like sex, it's so good.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I grew up in Wisconsin with a lot of homemade butter,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and homemade butter is just so much better than in
- 11:58Speaker 2: the store. It's like a different thing.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You put each brother. I wouldn't know if you.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Put homemade, and I had forgotten how good it was.
- 12:04Speaker 2: So this field trip my son went on to a
- 12:07Speaker 2: couple of years ago, they churn buttered. They I spent
- 12:10Speaker 2: more time churning than the kids did, but as I
- 12:13Speaker 2: was one of the chaperones, but I churned up exactly
- 12:16Speaker 2: their weedy little arms. I turned up the butter, and
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'd forgotten how good it is. You put homemade butter
- 12:21Speaker 2: on homemade bread and you have a flip and treat
- 12:24Speaker 2: right there.
- 12:25Speaker 3: That sounds wonderful.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm guessing.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Oh no, I'm just I'm in the process of trying
- 12:31Speaker 5: to make sour dough bread because that's my favorite, oh
- 12:35Speaker 5: of life, and I haven't I haven't gotten it down
- 12:37Speaker 5: yet because it's complicated.
- 12:38Speaker 1: But yeah, we missed the whole but getting a starter
- 12:41Speaker 1: going during COVID thing I wish we had. Yeah, Jack,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'm sure there are semi overpriced like electric butter schurns
- 12:50Speaker 1: you can get from you know, Sharper.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Pilot. We did it the old timey away with a
- 12:56Speaker 2: look like the thing you've seen in old timey movies
- 12:58Speaker 2: with a stick in a cylinder with a hole on
- 13:01Speaker 2: the top. It kind of looks a little sexual. But
- 13:04Speaker 2: I mean, you're you're doing this thing.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
- 13:10Speaker 2: But yeah, homemade butter, that's that's what you gotta add.
- 13:12Speaker 2: You have homemade bread with homemade butter. Oh, got to
- 13:15Speaker 2: do it.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I'm looking at how to make homemade butter and it
- 13:18Speaker 5: doesn't look that difficult, it's at all.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I'm gonna try it today.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Do it, yeah, and then report back.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Oh so good, get me a tub.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Not that sort of stuff. The ship mittens sell over
- 13:29Speaker 2: there at the store.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Oh, I know it, I know it.
- 13:34Speaker 4: My mom breaks My mom bakes bread and she's the
- 13:36Speaker 4: sweetest woman ever, but when her yeast doesn't rise, f
- 13:39Speaker 4: bombs there.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Stay out of the kitchen. Man danger danger.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Well, I guess that's it.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Ship mintens is my new favorite thing.
- 13:50Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 13:51Speaker 3: The world.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Get your ship mittens off my bread, she said,
