Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / No. 6, Ep. 1- Drowned Rat
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person? Michelle, I'm back, I guess. I
- 0:04Speaker 1: don't really know, but I think I'm back. And I
- 0:06Speaker 1: think you'll probably hear me, but if you can't hear
- 0:08Speaker 1: me because, you know, I'm dead and I'm not actually
- 0:11Speaker 1: recording this, I'm sorry. But at least I'm talking to myself.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And at least death isn't as scary as I thought
- 0:16Speaker 1: it was going to be. Anyway, like I said, I guess,
- 0:20Speaker 1: when I, like, came back and I said it, we're
- 0:22Speaker 1: going to talk about number six today. The anime, number six.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Which is... An anime that unfortunately isn't available anywhere in
- 0:34Speaker 1: the US legally. Which I'm really sorry about. I considered
- 0:38Speaker 1: very heavily not doing it because it doesn't have a
- 0:41Speaker 1: legal streaming source. But I'm going to do it anyway
- 0:44Speaker 1: because I kind of want to. And I'm sure that
- 0:47Speaker 1: you can find it if you look for it. It's
- 0:50Speaker 1: not like it doesn't exist on the internet. You just
- 0:53Speaker 1: can't pay for it. So... That's unfortunately what happens when
- 0:59Speaker 1: an anime isn't very popular, and most people don't know
- 1:02Speaker 1: about it. In the West, I believe it was on Funimation, maybe? Eventually,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the license runs out and it doesn't get renewed, which
- 1:10Speaker 1: happened to a couple of shows recently. We were lucky
- 1:13Speaker 1: that did get renewed, but looked kind of scary for
- 1:15Speaker 1: a minute, including Banana Fish, which you know about. But also,
- 1:19Speaker 1: 86 had a weird month period or so, or maybe less,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm not sure, and Hunter x Hunter as well. where
- 1:27Speaker 1: they dropped off of Crunchyroll due to just the licenses
- 1:31Speaker 1: expiring and I guess having to renegotiate contracts or whatever.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But a lot of times when that happens, the anime
- 1:37Speaker 1: just doesn't come back. It would never happen to Hunter
- 1:40Speaker 1: x Hunter or probably 86. I mean, I think there's
- 1:44Speaker 1: enough crazy rabid 86 fans that 86 will probably be okay.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And I mean, Hunter x Hunter, if Crunchyroll didn't want it,
- 1:51Speaker 1: somebody else would. It's a big deal. But yeah, if
- 1:54Speaker 1: something isn't just as well-known... or doesn't appeal to such
- 1:58Speaker 1: a wide audience, it's just not going to stick around
- 2:01Speaker 1: as much. And unfortunately, that is the case with number six,
- 2:04Speaker 1: like I just said. And to be fair, it's not
- 2:09Speaker 1: totally unfounded that this isn't something that, you know, people
- 2:13Speaker 1: are like, oh my god, I love this, and this is,
- 2:15Speaker 1: you know, a defining thing in my life, and I
- 2:18Speaker 1: need to have access to it. It's a weird show
- 2:21Speaker 1: that has problems. And I remember watching it for the
- 2:25Speaker 1: first time and being really enamored with it. And then
- 2:28Speaker 1: watching it again maybe two years ago. It was two
- 2:31Speaker 1: years ago. And going like, wow, they really fucked this up.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So I'm actually really excited to watch this again and
- 2:38Speaker 1: see if I can reach a middle ground because my
- 2:41Speaker 1: views were so different. And I know that there's things
- 2:43Speaker 1: in here that I find really frustrating. And I really
- 2:47Speaker 1: want to talk about them. Especially in the context of
- 2:50Speaker 1: the author's influences, which I know now. And I'll tell
- 2:54Speaker 1: you about in a minute. And then you'll go, oh, okay. So, yeah. So,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I hope that you enjoy this anime. And that you
- 3:01Speaker 1: get something out of it. And if you don't, I
- 3:03Speaker 1: hope you at least enjoy me talking about it. Which
- 3:06Speaker 1: sounds like that's probably not going to happen. But I'd
- 3:09Speaker 1: still like it to. So, I hope this works out.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You know, it's only 11 episodes. Which is... It really
- 3:16Speaker 1: should have been more. But that's what we got. So...
- 3:19Speaker 1: even if you don't like it, that's 11 weeks to
- 3:21Speaker 1: put up with and then I'll leave you alone about
- 3:23Speaker 1: it forever or something. So yeah, so let's just kind
- 3:27Speaker 1: of talk about it as an entity and then we'll
- 3:31Speaker 1: get into it. So number six, the anime is based on,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I guess they're light novels. They're definitely novels. I couldn't
- 3:37Speaker 1: find anywhere that said light novels specifically, and I can't
- 3:40Speaker 1: actually see if there are pictures in them, because like
- 3:43Speaker 1: the anime, there is no legal way to buy the
- 3:47Speaker 1: novels in English, actually. There's no English translation. I have
- 3:52Speaker 1: been reading it because there's a fan translation, which is really, really,
- 3:56Speaker 1: really good. The translation is, the actual story is pretty
- 4:00Speaker 1: fucking good too so far. So I think a lot
- 4:04Speaker 1: of the issues I had come from the anime adaptation
- 4:09Speaker 1: and not the source material, but I'm not sure yet
- 4:11Speaker 1: because I'm still in the middle of reading all of
- 4:13Speaker 1: the light novels. Anyway, there are nine volumes of them.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think I'm in like volume five or something right now.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But anyway, they were released from 2006 to 2011. And
- 4:22Speaker 1: the author, Atsuko Asano, is actually 71. She didn't publish
- 4:25Speaker 1: her first novel until 1991. So she was in her
- 4:34Speaker 1: 30s is that how time works let's find out 54
- 4:36Speaker 1: 64 74 84 94 yeah she was in her 30s
- 4:40Speaker 1: towards the end of her 30s when she started getting
- 4:42Speaker 1: published which is fucking awesome by the way it's always
- 4:45Speaker 1: nice when you run into a you know an author
- 4:49Speaker 1: that it took a while for them to get going
- 4:51Speaker 1: but anyway she started with like writing children's novels and
- 4:54Speaker 1: she worked as like an elementary school teacher for a
- 4:56Speaker 1: while when she was just out of college that's really
- 5:00Speaker 1: all i know about her But anyway, number six ended
- 5:04Speaker 1: in 2011. And then she also wrote a couple of other,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I guess, light novel series about number six. There's number
- 5:12Speaker 1: six beyond, which is nine volumes. And I guess that
- 5:15Speaker 1: was released in like 2012 or something. Or after that,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm not really sure. And that is mostly about what
- 5:22Speaker 1: happened to the characters before the events of number six,
- 5:26Speaker 1: which I have not read, obviously, because I haven't finished
- 5:28Speaker 1: number six. But I'm kind of excited to. And then
- 5:31Speaker 1: very recently, as in, I think, beginning in 2025, she
- 5:35Speaker 1: started releasing Number 6 Reunion, which is about what happens
- 5:40Speaker 1: after Number 6 Reunion. I think there were two volumes
- 5:43Speaker 1: out so far. And just from random people on the
- 5:46Speaker 1: internet talking, I've heard a little bit about them. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: they kind of make me really excited about the end
- 5:54Speaker 1: of the anime and the story because it gives me
- 5:57Speaker 1: some context into what happens. And when we get there,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about it because I think it
- 6:02Speaker 1: fixes something that I was frustrated about at the end.
- 6:07Speaker 1: But we'll get there when we get there. Anyway, based
- 6:10Speaker 1: on the Wikipedia article, There are two things that inspired
- 6:14Speaker 1: number six, basically, and they are weird. One of them
- 6:18Speaker 1: is the thing that I was going to tell you
- 6:21Speaker 1: about and I said you're going to know in a second.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It was Banana Fish. The manga, obviously, because the anime
- 6:26Speaker 1: was not out yet when she started writing this. She
- 6:28Speaker 1: basically said she was influenced by specifically the action elements,
- 6:33Speaker 1: love between two boys, and the relationship between a country
- 6:36Speaker 1: and an individual character. Okay, I'm not sure I get
- 6:39Speaker 1: that last one, but that's fine. But I just wanted
- 6:42Speaker 1: to say, like, I was reading this Wikipedia page when
- 6:45Speaker 1: I was trying to decide if I was going to
- 6:46Speaker 1: do this or not. And I saw that and I
- 6:48Speaker 1: was like, fuck, I kind of knew that. The first
- 6:52Speaker 1: time I watched number six was maybe, I don't know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: like 10 years ago or something. When the hell did
- 6:58Speaker 1: it come out? Yeah, maybe 10 years ago. And when
- 7:03Speaker 1: I watched Banana Fish, which was like two years ago,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I was like, oh, my God, this reminds me of
- 7:08Speaker 1: number six. And then, of course, immediately I was like, oh,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I guess number six reminds me of banana fish. So
- 7:14Speaker 1: when I saw that that was one of her influences,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I was just like, yeah, I know, actually, because there
- 7:20Speaker 1: were a lot of times where I was like, huh,
- 7:23Speaker 1: that's like this. So I'm going to try not to
- 7:26Speaker 1: be super annoying with the parts where I'm like, oh,
- 7:29Speaker 1: this is a banana fish reference. But I am going
- 7:31Speaker 1: to talk about it sometimes because there are areas where
- 7:35Speaker 1: this being influenced by banana fish made me angry. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: it's probably not going to make you angry. And you're
- 7:42Speaker 1: just going to be like, what the fuck, Michelle? But
- 7:44Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about it anyway. But moving on
- 7:46Speaker 1: from banana fish, sorry. The other thing she was inspired by,
- 7:50Speaker 1: which is real fucking weird, was the 9-11 attack. terrorist
- 7:55Speaker 1: attacks that took place in 2001. She apparently was watching
- 7:59Speaker 1: the attacks on television and it caused her to ponder
- 8:01Speaker 1: the nature of conflicts between an individual and the state.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And she wrote number six around those themes. Yeah, I
- 8:08Speaker 1: guess as we go, we'll talk about that and see
- 8:10Speaker 1: if we can understand where she's coming from. Because when
- 8:14Speaker 1: I originally read that, I was like, what the fuck, dude?
- 8:17Speaker 1: So maybe we'll kind of figure that out as we go.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So those are the influences. Banana Fish in September 11th. Yeah. Anyway,
- 8:25Speaker 1: moving on from that, this, of course, I just said
- 8:29Speaker 1: is based on a light novel, but there is a manga.
- 8:33Speaker 1: The interesting thing about this manga is that it was
- 8:36Speaker 1: being released at the same time as the anime was
- 8:39Speaker 1: being released. The manga was drawn by Hinoki Kino, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was also written by Atsuko Asano, which is good
- 8:48Speaker 1: because I don't feel as horrible about the changes in
- 8:51Speaker 1: it because I know that she was okay with them. Because,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you know, a lot of it is stripped out. But
- 8:58Speaker 1: it's still her work. It ran in Aria magazine, which
- 9:02Speaker 1: was a Shoujo slash Jose. It was both manga magazine
- 9:07Speaker 1: from 2011 to 2013. So it picked up right after
- 9:12Speaker 1: the ninth volume was released, I guess, in 2011. It
- 9:16Speaker 1: was released in nine volumes. You can buy those in
- 9:20Speaker 1: the U.S. Right now, I believe they've done it so
- 9:23Speaker 1: they've condensed it into three really big volumes. And I
- 9:26Speaker 1: went to like Barnes & Noble yesterday and they didn't
- 9:29Speaker 1: have the first one and I was really angry. But
- 9:33Speaker 1: that's not anyone's fault except for mine. But I don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: know how. It doesn't matter. Anyway. So we got that.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And then, like I said, the anime was coming out
- 9:42Speaker 1: in tandem with the manga. I believe the manga started
- 9:46Speaker 1: being released in the beginning of 2011 and the anime
- 9:49Speaker 1: was in the middle of 2011. Yes, it was in
- 9:51Speaker 1: the summer season of 2011. So the 11 episodes ran
- 9:52Speaker 1: from July 8th to September 16th. It was produced by
- 10:03Speaker 1: Studio Bones, which is actually one of my favorite studios.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I don't know if we've done anything from them. I'm
- 10:11Speaker 1: trying to think. That wasn't Studio Bones. Maybe we did.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Maybe we did like one thing a while back. But, uh,
- 10:19Speaker 1: There was a time, I think, closer to the earlier
- 10:22Speaker 1: part of the 2000s where Studio Bones was just doing
- 10:25Speaker 1: weird shit with anime. Like they were like diverging from
- 10:28Speaker 1: stories a lot. And I was just like, what are
- 10:30Speaker 1: you guys doing over there? So this is kind of
- 10:33Speaker 1: in that time period. Anyway, I think of them as
- 10:36Speaker 1: a high quality studio, but not everything that they put
- 10:38Speaker 1: out is high quality. Anyway, the anime was directed by
- 10:42Speaker 1: Kenji Nagasaki, who actually is the director of My Hero Academia.
- 10:49Speaker 1: which I thought was really interesting. I had no idea.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And he also did some storyboards and episode directions for
- 10:54Speaker 1: some episodes of Monster, which we obviously haven't watched here
- 10:59Speaker 1: because it's many, many, many episodes. But it is fucking awesome.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I will say, though, that I think both Monster and
- 11:06Speaker 1: especially My Hero Academia have serious pacing issues. And I
- 11:11Speaker 1: think number six does as well. So first I was like, really? Really?
- 11:16Speaker 1: That's weird. And then I thought about it and I
- 11:17Speaker 1: was like, yeah, no, he is trouble with pacing, doesn't he?
- 11:21Speaker 1: So moving on from director, series composition was Seishi Minakami.
- 11:28Speaker 1: They did the script and screenplay for Paprika, which is
- 11:32Speaker 1: super cool. And then also the script for certain episodes
- 11:36Speaker 1: of various shows like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Paranoia Agent,
- 11:41Speaker 1: A Certain Magical Index, and A Certain Scientific Railgun. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: haven't seen those last two, but Paranoia Agent is what?
- 11:49Speaker 1: And people love Full Metal Alchemist, even though I don't.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's still a good show. So cool. As for character designer,
- 11:57Speaker 1: we have Satoshi Ishino, and they are the character designer
- 12:00Speaker 1: from Gachi Akuda, which is really fucking cool. So basically,
- 12:05Speaker 1: this looks like a pretty decent group of individuals working together.
- 12:09Speaker 1: As for the voice actors, I'm willing to talk about
- 12:12Speaker 1: the two main characters' voice actors because they're just talking
- 12:16Speaker 1: all the time and no one else talks that much.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I mean, they do, just not as much. So Nezumi
- 12:21Speaker 1: is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya, who we have heard several times.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He was Shin and Dorohedoro, yay. And he was also
- 12:33Speaker 1: Arthur in Banana Fish. He's got kind of a range
- 12:36Speaker 1: of mean people and not as mean people who are
- 12:39Speaker 1: also kind of mean. That's kind of his thing. He
- 12:41Speaker 1: was also Wolfwood in Trigun, Stargaze, and Stampede, Onigawara Tenga
- 12:47Speaker 1: in Mob Psycho 100, and Tanigaki in Golden Kamui. So
- 12:52Speaker 1: he knows what he's doing. As for Shion, the other
- 12:55Speaker 1: main character, he was voiced by Yuki Kaji. who is
- 13:00Speaker 1: Clef in the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth remake, which is
- 13:03Speaker 1: actually probably airing right now, even though I'm doing this
- 13:06Speaker 1: like a month ago, so I don't know. But weird.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And then Todoroki in My Hero Academia. And more importantly,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Eren Yegar in Attack on Titan. So these are two
- 13:17Speaker 1: pretty decent voice actors. Oh, and then also 13 in
- 13:21Speaker 1: Dorohedoro and Yukine in Noragami, if you've seen that, which
- 13:25Speaker 1: is very good. So yeah, these are two pretty accomplished
- 13:29Speaker 1: VAs that we're dealing with as the main characters. Aside
- 13:32Speaker 1: from that, I think I got everything that I wanted
- 13:35Speaker 1: to tell you, except that in addition to being an
- 13:38Speaker 1: anime and a light novel series and manga, it was
- 13:42Speaker 1: also a musical that ran in Tokyo from November 8th
- 13:45Speaker 1: to the 17th in 2024, and in Osaka from November
- 13:46Speaker 1: 22nd to 24th, also in 2024. Yay, musicals, I guess.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So let's get to this. Because I am driving myself
- 13:58Speaker 1: crazy already. And unlike last season of the show when
- 14:02Speaker 1: we did Serial Experiments Lane and I was doing about
- 14:05Speaker 1: 14 pages per episode of notes. And I thought, well,
- 14:09Speaker 1: maybe something has changed with me and I suddenly know
- 14:12Speaker 1: how to write notes really efficiently. Nope. This first episode
- 14:16Speaker 1: was 23 pages of notes. When I was writing it,
- 14:19Speaker 1: I mean, I'm doing this so early that I wasn't
- 14:21Speaker 1: like under a time crunch or anything. But I was
- 14:24Speaker 1: writing it and I just kept working on it for
- 14:25Speaker 1: a little bit at a time and going like, why
- 14:27Speaker 1: is this taking me so long? So yeah, that's the
- 14:30Speaker 1: reason I wrote a lot of notes. I'm hoping maybe
- 14:32Speaker 1: I get to write less notes in the next couple episodes.
- 14:35Speaker 1: But I did notice that when I do light novel adaptations,
- 14:38Speaker 1: this is what happens. So whatever. Because people talk a
- 14:41Speaker 1: lot because that's how you do things in prose. Anyway,
- 14:45Speaker 1: let's do it before I decide that this is a
- 14:48Speaker 1: terrible idea. The first episode of number six... is called
- 14:52Speaker 1: Drowned Rat. Yay! I like rats. We start the episode
- 14:58Speaker 1: with just a black screen, and we're hearing, like, really
- 15:01Speaker 1: labored breathing, and then kind of the sound of, like,
- 15:03Speaker 1: a metal door squeaking open. We get a close-up of
- 15:07Speaker 1: eyes as a person turns to look to the side,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and then they gasp. Things are very dimly lit, by
- 15:14Speaker 1: the way. A laser target is on their forehead from, like,
- 15:18Speaker 1: a gun. Their eyes twitch. We now see men in
- 15:22Speaker 1: suits with sunglasses shoot at what I assume is a
- 15:26Speaker 1: small-ish boy. And we see blood splatter against like a
- 15:30Speaker 1: concrete wall that's got like those control joints and shit.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And this person, who again, I'm pretty sure is like
- 15:37Speaker 1: a young-ish boy, slams back against the wall, clutching their
- 15:41Speaker 1: kind of like shoulder, upper left arm area, which is bleeding.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And because of the dim lighting, really all we can
- 15:47Speaker 1: see is that this person is has like dark shoulder
- 15:50Speaker 1: length hair. Two more shots hit the wall next to him,
- 15:53Speaker 1: just like barely missing him. And he moves out of frame.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And there are two more shots that hit the wall
- 15:58Speaker 1: right after he does. We hear a bunch more gunfire.
- 16:02Speaker 1: We get a wide shot of like a long, dark
- 16:05Speaker 1: tunnel with like lots of arched entryways into it. And
- 16:09Speaker 1: all the entryways are up a little bit. And then
- 16:11Speaker 1: they kind of go down just maybe like a foot
- 16:14Speaker 1: into this main tunnel and And it looks like it's
- 16:17Speaker 1: a sewer. So I hope that it's a sewer. God
- 16:19Speaker 1: damn it. That kid comes out of one of these
- 16:23Speaker 1: arched entryways and he kind of falls over, you know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: like the small drop down into the main tunnel and
- 16:30Speaker 1: like lands face down in what is absolutely water. So yes,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure this is a sewer. Yay. I'm glad
- 16:38Speaker 1: that we're starting in a sewer. He gets up and
- 16:41Speaker 1: he starts to run as you do. And like four
- 16:44Speaker 1: guys with sunglasses are like chasing him. It's weird that
- 16:47Speaker 1: they have sunglasses on, but whatever. He runs through the
- 16:51Speaker 1: water and some other guys like meet up with these guys.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So there's like a lot of guys chasing him with
- 16:56Speaker 1: sunglasses on and he's running and we see that he's barefoot,
- 17:00Speaker 1: which sucks. And he probably has tetanus now. And he
- 17:05Speaker 1: is now running towards like a light at the end
- 17:07Speaker 1: of a tunnel as you bite, holding his arm. He stumbles,
- 17:12Speaker 1: but like he doesn't actually fall. He just kind of
- 17:14Speaker 1: trips and then recovers. And we have a close-up of
- 17:17Speaker 1: his face now, and we can see that he has, like,
- 17:19Speaker 1: really dark blue hair and gray eyes. I also want
- 17:23Speaker 1: to point out here that I really, really don't like
- 17:25Speaker 1: the music. It's like a three-note, some sort of string
- 17:31Speaker 1: instrument-based thing that I'm pretty sure is just a synth,
- 17:33Speaker 1: and it's going like dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun. I really don't
- 17:38Speaker 1: like it. I get that this is an intense moment,
- 17:41Speaker 1: but it didn't work for me. Sorry, guys. Anyway, he's running.
- 17:45Speaker 1: And then he gasps because up ahead of him is
- 17:48Speaker 1: the end of the tunnel, but it's secured by bars.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Past it is a body of water, but he obviously
- 17:55Speaker 1: can't get there. He grabs these bars and he like
- 17:59Speaker 1: tries to pull them open or something, which is super
- 18:01Speaker 1: weird because it's not a door. It's just bars. I
- 18:03Speaker 1: don't know what he thinks he's going to do. Also,
- 18:05Speaker 1: he's pretty small. He's just kind of frantically pulling on
- 18:08Speaker 1: the bars for the bit and there's kind of a
- 18:09Speaker 1: noticeable animation cycle here, which is a little weird. But anyway,
- 18:13Speaker 1: he calms down and he just kind of holds them tightly,
- 18:17Speaker 1: slumps forward against them and clenches his teeth. We cut
- 18:20Speaker 1: to the exterior of a city for some reason and
- 18:22Speaker 1: the camera pans up on a building as we hear
- 18:25Speaker 1: him scream in frustration. It's a pretty good scream. The
- 18:30Speaker 1: sky is gray and clouds are moving quickly overhead and
- 18:34Speaker 1: the wind is blowing through the trees. We get a
- 18:37Speaker 1: close-up on a boy with brown hair and brown eyes.
- 18:40Speaker 1: He suddenly looks to the side and we're looking at
- 18:43Speaker 1: him from outside like these really large windows where he's
- 18:46Speaker 1: sitting in a desk in a classroom, I guess, looking out.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And the wind is blowing through the trees here too.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And we hear a voice say, the brain is a
- 18:57Speaker 1: complex system composed of 10 billion nerve cells. A girl
- 19:02Speaker 1: with chin-length brown hair wearing a purple... Charlie Brown sweater,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you know, the kind that Charlie Brown wears. It looks
- 19:10Speaker 1: like that. Is standing at like a podium at the
- 19:13Speaker 1: front of the room. Behind her on a screen is
- 19:16Speaker 1: being projected like parts of the brain in like different colors.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And I see like the frontal lobe, temporal lobe. I
- 19:23Speaker 1: can't read what I wrote. Brainstem, cerebellum, and occipital lobe. Sorry, guys.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I can't read my own handwriting. The girl continues. Even
- 19:35Speaker 1: the thing we usually refer to as the soul can
- 19:38Speaker 1: be explained. She flips to a new slide that says
- 19:42Speaker 1: neurons and their functions. What a fun class. She continues
- 19:48Speaker 1: as a simple electrical exchange. governed by a scientific process.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We are kind of pulling in from behind on that
- 19:55Speaker 1: boy who's looking out the window. The girl continues. Neurons
- 19:59Speaker 1: and synapses communicating through neurotransmitters. We see his back and
- 20:04Speaker 1: the tree branches moving out the window in front of him.
- 20:07Speaker 1: And he's just staring at it. totally transfixed we get
- 20:11Speaker 1: like a weird maybe cgi movement thing going on with
- 20:17Speaker 1: the tree branches that honestly looks like ai but remember
- 20:20Speaker 1: this came out in 2011 so it's not so i'm
- 20:23Speaker 1: assuming it's computer animated but it just there's like a
- 20:26Speaker 1: very uncanniness to it the girl continues however as was
- 20:30Speaker 1: proved in the aforementioned experiment with the rat this processes
- 20:35Speaker 1: she just kind of fades out The boy gasps. Large, dark,
- 20:39Speaker 1: cumulonimbus clouds are rolling in over the city, and we
- 20:43Speaker 1: see lightning go off in them twice. He stares at
- 20:47Speaker 1: them and smiles. We cut to those weird trees again,
- 20:50Speaker 1: and then we have a close-up on his eye as
- 20:53Speaker 1: his hair starts to blow in the wind, which is
- 20:55Speaker 1: weird because he's inside. Leaves pass by him. Okay, we
- 21:00Speaker 1: see he is just sitting in the air now, high
- 21:03Speaker 1: above the city. I assume just daydreaming. He stands on nothing.
- 21:09Speaker 1: As the clouds roll in over his head, he closes
- 21:12Speaker 1: his eyes and smiles and then falls backwards. His hands,
- 21:16Speaker 1: then arms and legs disintegrate into leaves as he slowly
- 21:20Speaker 1: drifts down back towards Earth. We get a close-up of
- 21:23Speaker 1: the girl. Hey, what are you talking about during my presentation?
- 21:27Speaker 1: Everyone looks up, including the kid who was just daydreaming
- 21:31Speaker 1: and these two really mean-looking boys who were in the
- 21:33Speaker 1: front row. The two mean looking boys look at each
- 21:35Speaker 1: other because obviously they're the ones that were talking. And
- 21:37Speaker 1: the first boy says, well, the wind is just so strong.
- 21:41Speaker 1: We see the city and this weird white domed building
- 21:45Speaker 1: that looks like it has like a honeycomb pattern structure
- 21:48Speaker 1: over it. The boy continues, we thought the moon drop
- 21:51Speaker 1: might even cry. You shouldn't snap over every little thing.
- 21:54Speaker 1: The girl slams the screen on the podium and it
- 21:57Speaker 1: like pixelates for a second. And she says, you two
- 21:59Speaker 1: should be ashamed. Jeez. That first boy stands and is like,
- 22:03Speaker 1: You trying to start something? The second boy smirks. Don't
- 22:07Speaker 1: get all high and mighty just because you've been accepted
- 22:09Speaker 1: for the special course. He holds his nose and waves
- 22:12Speaker 1: his hand in front of his face. You still wear
- 22:14Speaker 1: clothes from like a century ago. The girl gasps. Oh,
- 22:18Speaker 1: what an insult. All the kids start kind of laughing
- 22:21Speaker 1: and chattering about this, which is mean, but kids are mean.
- 22:25Speaker 1: The girl's like, That's what I call trying to start something.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And she just like runs at that second boy and
- 22:30Speaker 1: starts attacking him, like attacking him. And his chair falls
- 22:34Speaker 1: over and she just starts beating him up. And now
- 22:37Speaker 1: the other boy as well that he was talking to
- 22:39Speaker 1: is trying to help him. So she's just beating the
- 22:41Speaker 1: shit out of both of them. And the main boy
- 22:43Speaker 1: who was daydreaming is like, Safu? And he's just looking
- 22:47Speaker 1: pretty freaked out at all of this. At this point,
- 22:49Speaker 1: the door slides open and two adults, a man and
- 22:52Speaker 1: a woman, are there. And the woman says, just what
- 22:55Speaker 1: is going on in here? We hear a slap and
- 22:58Speaker 1: the main daydreaming boy winces and looks away. We're just
- 23:02Speaker 1: seeing this from his reaction at the moment. And we
- 23:05Speaker 1: hear a voice say, get away from him, Saffusan. Let go.
- 23:08Speaker 1: The boy sighs and opens his eyes and looks pretty
- 23:11Speaker 1: stressed and disappointed. Then we go to the opening theme. Yay.
- 23:16Speaker 1: It is called Spell by Llama. And it's pretty decent,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I think. We see, like, a blue sky. We're panning
- 23:24Speaker 1: down on, like, a city from above. We see a
- 23:27Speaker 1: bunch of, like, images of the kid who was daydreaming, like,
- 23:31Speaker 1: just doing normal life things, like going to school and
- 23:34Speaker 1: shit like that. And then we cut to him, like, walking.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And he's, like, made up of all the little images
- 23:39Speaker 1: that we just saw, like, you know. Then we go
- 23:43Speaker 1: to that first kid from the beginning who was in
- 23:45Speaker 1: the sewer and we get like lots of shots of
- 23:48Speaker 1: him as well, like running and looking like really cold
- 23:53Speaker 1: and being chased and being thrown on the ground and
- 23:56Speaker 1: with a gun to his head and behind bars and
- 23:58Speaker 1: looking like really pissed and holding a knife. And I
- 24:00Speaker 1: love him already. We cut to him walking, also made
- 24:04Speaker 1: up of images. And then we see that like honeycomb
- 24:07Speaker 1: pattern building shape scene. Then we see them like standing
- 24:10Speaker 1: across from each other and all of like the pictures
- 24:14Speaker 1: that were on top of them blow off of them
- 24:16Speaker 1: and they look really surprised because the whole thing is weird.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And they look older, which is stupid that they put
- 24:22Speaker 1: that here because there's obviously going to be a time skip,
- 24:24Speaker 1: but we probably should have waited until then to show
- 24:27Speaker 1: this opening. So it would be, you know, we would
- 24:30Speaker 1: get to see what they look like naturally instead of
- 24:32Speaker 1: spoiling in the opening, but whatever. Anyway, they're older, they're standing,
- 24:35Speaker 1: you know, several feet apart from each other and there's
- 24:37Speaker 1: rainbow between them. Yay. That's the opening. Anyway, back from
- 24:42Speaker 1: the opening, we get a close up of a hand
- 24:45Speaker 1: in like a pants pocket with like this weird like
- 24:48Speaker 1: wrist cuff band on it. And a red laser scans
- 24:53Speaker 1: the wrist band cuff thing and a yellow light comes
- 24:56Speaker 1: on and then it turns blue, which I think is
- 24:58Speaker 1: probably good. We see a bunch of people standing in
- 25:01Speaker 1: a large space that I'm pretty sure is a subway
- 25:03Speaker 1: terminal or at least some sort of public transportation terminal.
- 25:07Speaker 1: We get a shot of a city. with a river
- 25:09Speaker 1: or a canal running through it, and a boat on
- 25:12Speaker 1: the water, and it honks. And then I believe we
- 25:15Speaker 1: don't get an actual title card so much as the
- 25:17Speaker 1: title drifts in, Number 01, Drowned Rat. We see another boat,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and then that girl who was beating up those kids,
- 25:25Speaker 1: looking out the window in the boat and pouting. That boy,
- 25:30Speaker 1: the one that was daydreaming about being outside in the storm,
- 25:34Speaker 1: we hear him say, Jeez, you're so much more suited
- 25:37Speaker 1: for martial arts than neuroscience. The girl looks up and
- 25:40Speaker 1: over him. You weren't listening, were you? The boy's like, huh?
- 25:45Speaker 1: We see that they're seated at like the back row
- 25:48Speaker 1: of this boat. And the girl is actually facing out
- 25:51Speaker 1: like she's kneeling on the seat. So she's looking out
- 25:54Speaker 1: the back window. And she's like maybe two or three
- 25:57Speaker 1: seats from the boy. She says to my presentation. The
- 26:01Speaker 1: boy's like, mankind only recognizes itself as such. by the
- 26:06Speaker 1: conception of self placed upon them by society. In other words,
- 26:10Speaker 1: we are able to draw a conclusion about the process
- 26:12Speaker 1: of self-realization that occurs in the brain in terms of,
- 26:16Speaker 1: the girl smiles and blushes a little, and the boy continues,
- 26:20Speaker 1: whether the individual perceives sovereignty. The girl scooches over and
- 26:25Speaker 1: plops down in the seat next to him and she
- 26:27Speaker 1: smiles and kind of chuckles and like kicks her legs happily.
- 26:31Speaker 1: She is so cute for someone who was just attacking people.
- 26:34Speaker 1: We get a wide shot outside of the boat. It's
- 26:36Speaker 1: approaching a large river now going under like a little
- 26:39Speaker 1: bridgey thing. And we see a shot of the wrist
- 26:42Speaker 1: cuff again. And they are now both standing in a station.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And the girl says, hey, is it today? The boy's like, huh? Yeah.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Isn't that why you invited me? The girl's like, no,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I meant the typhoon. I don't know what the other
- 26:56Speaker 1: thing was. We see a screen like up on the
- 27:00Speaker 1: ceiling screen that has Stuff that's not that important, but
- 27:03Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you about it anyway. It has
- 27:05Speaker 1: departure and arrival times. And we see that it is 1535,
- 27:09Speaker 1: which is 335 p.m. And there are red letters moving
- 27:13Speaker 1: across the bottom that say typhoon approaching. There is a
- 27:16Speaker 1: flight cancellation depending on the typhoon's path. And then that's
- 27:19Speaker 1: all I get. The boy says, oh, they said it
- 27:22Speaker 1: would be passing through number six today. Now they are
- 27:25Speaker 1: walking their bikes up a hill. I didn't even know
- 27:28Speaker 1: they had bikes. Maybe they like leave them at the
- 27:31Speaker 1: station and they pick them up at the end of
- 27:33Speaker 1: the school day. I really don't know how this works.
- 27:35Speaker 1: But anyway, there are storm clouds overhead and the boy
- 27:37Speaker 1: is looking up and he's like, man, I'm really excited.
- 27:40Speaker 1: This is like the best present ever. Jeez. The girl's like,
- 27:44Speaker 1: what are you talking about? They're now at the top
- 27:47Speaker 1: of a hill and the girl jumps on her bike
- 27:49Speaker 1: and she's like, come on, let's hurry. She speeds off.
- 27:53Speaker 1: The boy's like, wait. And he starts to follow. Safu! Yay,
- 27:57Speaker 1: she has a name. The boy is still just boy though.
- 28:01Speaker 1: They ride down the hill towards a suburban-ish or kind
- 28:05Speaker 1: of rural area. And we see the exterior of this
- 28:09Speaker 1: white kind of modern looking house with gardens and like
- 28:13Speaker 1: a little stream or canal or something between like paths.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And it is really windy out. And we hear a
- 28:21Speaker 1: voice say, it's so nice to see you, Shion. Okay,
- 28:24Speaker 1: he has a name now too. This person who is
- 28:27Speaker 1: an older woman says, you've grown so tall. She is
- 28:31Speaker 1: sitting in a living room and Shion bows and says,
- 28:35Speaker 1: it's been a while, grandma. Sappu kind of backs over
- 28:38Speaker 1: and then kneels next to grandma and says, hey, hey, grandma.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Grandma quietly is like, yes, yes, it's finished. Sappu walks
- 28:47Speaker 1: back over to Shion holding a present wrapped in white
- 28:50Speaker 1: paper with a red bow around it behind her back.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And she holds it out to him and says, Shion,
- 28:56Speaker 1: happy birthday. Oh, that's the other thing. Shion's like, huh,
- 29:00Speaker 1: for me? Safu nods. Yeah. He takes the present and
- 29:05Speaker 1: Safu looks back at Ramon, smiles, and we cut to
- 29:09Speaker 1: Shion's hands holding it up. And it is a light
- 29:13Speaker 1: purple Charlie Brown sweater. Yay. Yeah, I don't know, guys.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Safu's like, Hey, do you remember? The first time I
- 29:22Speaker 1: wore mine to school, you were the only one who
- 29:24Speaker 1: complimented me. She smiles. You said you could tell that
- 29:27Speaker 1: I had a really warm personality. Hers is like kind
- 29:30Speaker 1: of black or like really, really dark purple or something,
- 29:33Speaker 1: by the way. And the one that Shion has now
- 29:35Speaker 1: is light purple. Shion's like, hmm. He looks at the sweater.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Is that really what happened? Saffu pouts. I was thinking
- 29:43Speaker 1: of giving you the same color, but since it's you,
- 29:47Speaker 1: the flower you were named after is light purple. So
- 29:50Speaker 1: I'll just pause there and say that Shion is the
- 29:54Speaker 1: name for a type of aster flower. which is that
- 29:58Speaker 1: color purple, and it looks kind of like a daisy
- 30:00Speaker 1: or something. So now you know. Anyway, Shion's like, yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 1: thank you. Thank you very much, Grandma. Grandma says, even
- 30:09Speaker 1: after you move into the special course, please continue to
- 30:11Speaker 1: look after Safu. Shion's like, sure. Safu kind of runs
- 30:16Speaker 1: off and she's like, I'll go bake the cake. Shion turns.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I'll help too. Safu's like, no, it's fine. She's, like,
- 30:23Speaker 1: putting an apron on in the kitchen. I did all
- 30:25Speaker 1: the preparation this morning, so all I have to do
- 30:27Speaker 1: is bake it. We cut to a strawberry shortcake cake
- 30:31Speaker 1: with 12 candles on it and, like, a thing on
- 30:33Speaker 1: it that says, Happy Birthday, 12! Shion blows out the
- 30:37Speaker 1: candles and smiles, and Sappu claps kind of slowly and
- 30:41Speaker 1: rhythmically and looks way, way too happy, and Grandma claps too,
- 30:45Speaker 1: and I just thought this whole thing was weird. Shion blushes,
- 30:49Speaker 1: and then we see them eating at the table and, like, talking.
- 30:52Speaker 1: We fade to white. Everything's good. Yay. We now see
- 30:57Speaker 1: a close-up of Grandma's hands as she knits something that
- 31:01Speaker 1: is kind of pink. And she says, Really, I'm so
- 31:05Speaker 1: glad you like it. Shion is looking out the window
- 31:08Speaker 1: and he closes the curtains. And he's like, Huh? Oh, yeah,
- 31:11Speaker 1: of course. Grandma says, I feel like there's nothing I
- 31:15Speaker 1: can really do for you. Hmm. Saffu's in the kitchen
- 31:19Speaker 1: and she's like taking off her apron and she's like, Shion,
- 31:22Speaker 1: come with me. She starts to run off and then
- 31:24Speaker 1: we cut to a dark closet. We hear the door
- 31:27Speaker 1: open and the light turns on and Safu runs in.
- 31:30Speaker 1: It's a pretty big, long closet with clothes hanging and shit.
- 31:33Speaker 1: And she's like, see, isn't this amazing? It's just a
- 31:37Speaker 1: closet with clothes. I don't think it's amazing. Sorry, Safu.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Shion walks in and looks around and he's like, whoa,
- 31:44Speaker 1: grandma made all these? Safu's like, yeah. She picks up
- 31:48Speaker 1: a really boring looking beige jacket and she's like, There
- 31:51Speaker 1: are even some from when she was a young lady.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Isn't it great? She looks down at the beige thing.
- 31:56Speaker 1: That's why I don't have any desire for clothes that
- 31:58Speaker 1: are made of special fibers. Right, Grandma? Grandma is sitting
- 32:01Speaker 1: right outside the closet. So maybe the closet is in
- 32:03Speaker 1: the living room. I don't know. And she's still knitting
- 32:05Speaker 1: and she laughs. And she's like, but, you know, I
- 32:07Speaker 1: have no idea what to do for you. Shion and
- 32:11Speaker 1: Safu both look maybe a little bit upset about that.
- 32:14Speaker 1: And Grandma continues. In number six and Kronos living so freely,
- 32:18Speaker 1: other than gardening and knitting, Tomorrow, the day after, I
- 32:22Speaker 1: just have no idea what to do. Shion looks worried.
- 32:26Speaker 1: We head to Shion and Safu who are out on
- 32:30Speaker 1: the front porch, I guess. It's raining, which is important
- 32:33Speaker 1: because we're going to have a typhoon. Shion puts up
- 32:36Speaker 1: an umbrella and is like, I'll come back and get
- 32:38Speaker 1: my bike tomorrow. That's smart. Safu's like, okay, my present
- 32:42Speaker 1: for you will end up going to waste. I'm not
- 32:44Speaker 1: sure what that means. Shion's like, it's really a present
- 32:48Speaker 1: from your grandma, though. Safu says. I have one for
- 32:51Speaker 1: you as well. Shion's like, what? Safu kisses him on
- 32:56Speaker 1: the cheek. Gross. That's, I don't know. Shion looks like
- 33:01Speaker 1: super confused and is silent for a second. And he's like,
- 33:04Speaker 1: why are you doing something that my mom does? Safu's like,
- 33:09Speaker 1: it's different. What I'm doing is a display of my
- 33:12Speaker 1: reproductive instinct. Gross. And an action-based expression of it. Yeah.
- 33:17Speaker 1: So I guess assault. Thanks. Gross. We quickly cut to
- 33:22Speaker 1: a shot of the kid from the sewer running and
- 33:24Speaker 1: holding his shoulder, just for a second, and then a
- 33:26Speaker 1: gust of wind blows Shion's umbrella away, like up into
- 33:30Speaker 1: the sky. I loved this cut. I thought it was
- 33:32Speaker 1: really cool, and I'm sure I'm not doing a great
- 33:34Speaker 1: job of expressing it. Shion is super happy about losing
- 33:38Speaker 1: his umbrella. Yay. Safu doesn't feel the same. We hear
- 33:43Speaker 1: a horn-ish sound in the distance or somewhere. And their
- 33:49Speaker 1: expressions flip because Shion looks not happy anymore. And Safu
- 33:54Speaker 1: is like super excited about the sound. And Safu says, wow,
- 33:58Speaker 1: the Moondrop is crying. We see that big honeycomb building
- 34:03Speaker 1: and we hear the sound again. It's like kind of sound.
- 34:06Speaker 1: We cut to people on the street as they stop
- 34:08Speaker 1: when they hear it. And then like people listening to
- 34:12Speaker 1: it in kind of a slummier area of the city.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And then a guy in front of an airplane, like
- 34:17Speaker 1: a baggage handler, takes off his hat and places it
- 34:20Speaker 1: over his heart. That was weird. We cut to two
- 34:23Speaker 1: people in a field of wheat hearing the sound. Everybody
- 34:27Speaker 1: loves this sound, guys. Safu's like, it's been so long
- 34:31Speaker 1: since I've heard the moon drop weeping. It certainly seems
- 34:33Speaker 1: to be more than just a typhoon. Okay. We're just
- 34:36Speaker 1: seeing Shion's mouth now and he says, blister. Safu looks
- 34:40Speaker 1: over at him. Huh? We see the moon drop again
- 34:43Speaker 1: and we hear Shion say, It's like a blister formed
- 34:46Speaker 1: on human skin. What? The building? What? We cut to
- 34:53Speaker 1: that kid leaning against a wall in the rain. He's
- 34:56Speaker 1: holding his shoulder and trying to catch his breath. The
- 34:58Speaker 1: shot isn't of his entire body or even all of
- 35:00Speaker 1: his face. But it appears that he was slumped over
- 35:03Speaker 1: and then he stands up straight. And we see like
- 35:07Speaker 1: a wider shot now. He's walking past some very large
- 35:10Speaker 1: wind turbines like in a field. We get to trees
- 35:13Speaker 1: blowing and it's raining really hard and water is like
- 35:17Speaker 1: rushing through this canal and it's getting really high. And
- 35:22Speaker 1: then we pan up to this like really nice house
- 35:24Speaker 1: on a hill with this multi-terraced water feature coming down
- 35:28Speaker 1: like the front lawn. That's super cool. And actually when
- 35:31Speaker 1: I saw it, I was like, is it always a
- 35:33Speaker 1: water feature or is it just a water feature because
- 35:35Speaker 1: there's a typhoon? No, it's always a water feature. Anyway. Okay.
- 35:38Speaker 1: From there, we cut to a large room with a
- 35:41Speaker 1: desk in the middle. Shion is standing at this window. Actually,
- 35:45Speaker 1: it's a pair of like these really large sliding glass doors.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And he's looking out as the rain beats against them.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Out on the horizon is the city. And he has
- 35:56Speaker 1: like no lights on in the room. So he's just
- 35:58Speaker 1: standing there in the dark. He just kind of abruptly
- 36:01Speaker 1: opens the sliding doors. And wind whips in the room,
- 36:04Speaker 1: blowing all the papers off his desk. And he stares
- 36:07Speaker 1: out as the wind whips his papers and his hair
- 36:09Speaker 1: and stuff and just smiles. He steps out onto the
- 36:13Speaker 1: deck in the rain. He's just wearing socks. He should
- 36:16Speaker 1: probably take those off. And he goes to the rail
- 36:19Speaker 1: and just kind of yells as loud as he can.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Just like, ah, but like really, really loud, like twice. Sure.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I wasn't really sure when I first watched this what's
- 36:30Speaker 1: going on. I think he's really frustrated. And this was
- 36:32Speaker 1: just a good time. Like the only time he could
- 36:34Speaker 1: think of like he can yell and no one's going
- 36:36Speaker 1: to hear him. Anyway, as the force of the storm
- 36:39Speaker 1: hits him, he stops and he just kind of looks
- 36:42Speaker 1: up at the sky for a moment, really kind of
- 36:44Speaker 1: delighting in all of this and calming down and an
- 36:48Speaker 1: alarm starts to go off. We see a screen on
- 36:51Speaker 1: a wall with like a big exclamation point on it.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Shion holds his wrist cuff in front of it and
- 36:58Speaker 1: it disarms. And then there's a chuckle somewhere else in
- 37:03Speaker 1: the room. He turns around slowly and then gasps. Standing
- 37:07Speaker 1: in his room near the open sliding doors is that
- 37:11Speaker 1: kid still holding his arm. The kid just kind of
- 37:14Speaker 1: stands there for a while and Shion is like trying
- 37:18Speaker 1: to gauge him and then he sees the wound and
- 37:22Speaker 1: he kind of calms down. I guess he was clenching
- 37:23Speaker 1: his fists because he unclenches them and he begins to
- 37:26Speaker 1: lift his hand towards the kid. And we just cut
- 37:29Speaker 1: to a shot of a floor lamp just hitting the ground.
- 37:32Speaker 1: And this whole section is a little disjointed, I think
- 37:34Speaker 1: on purpose. Anyway, lamp hits the ground. Shion looks over
- 37:37Speaker 1: and the kid just like rushes at him and squeezes
- 37:39Speaker 1: his neck with his bloody hand. He's holding Shion up
- 37:43Speaker 1: against the wall now. And he looks up at him
- 37:45Speaker 1: and says, don't move. Shion had his eyes closed, but
- 37:49Speaker 1: he looks at the kid and he says, so you're
- 37:52Speaker 1: used to doing things like this? Is that a banana
- 37:55Speaker 1: fish reference? Maybe. The kid looks confused and Shion's like,
- 37:59Speaker 1: I'll help patch you up. The kid just stares at him.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Shion says, you understand what I mean, right? The kid
- 38:06Speaker 1: like half nods and then slowly removes his hand from
- 38:10Speaker 1: Shion's neck. That screen on the wall starts to kind
- 38:13Speaker 1: of ring and the kid grabs Shion by the throat again,
- 38:18Speaker 1: holding him back against the wall. And Shion just kind
- 38:21Speaker 1: of like nods at him and he taps the screen
- 38:25Speaker 1: and says, what is it, mom? We hear his mom say, Shion,
- 38:29Speaker 1: are your windows opened? And Shion's like, window? Oh, yeah.
- 38:35Speaker 1: His mom's like, you should close them. You'll catch a cult.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Shion's like, gotcha. He taps something on the screen, which
- 38:43Speaker 1: I don't know what it is because of the angle
- 38:45Speaker 1: of the screen. I can't read what's on it. But
- 38:47Speaker 1: I think it's probably him closing the window. And then
- 38:50Speaker 1: he says, mom, I have a report to do. So
- 38:53Speaker 1: can you leave me alone for a while? His mom's like,
- 38:57Speaker 1: a report? The special course sure is rough, isn't it?
- 39:00Speaker 1: Shion still has the kid's hands around his throat and
- 39:02Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, I guess. I have a lot to do,
- 39:06Speaker 1: so I'll have my dinner later. His mom's like, I see.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Don't push yourself too hard. Shion taps the screen and
- 39:14Speaker 1: ends the call. The kid slowly releases him. Shion walks
- 39:18Speaker 1: past him and the kid gets in like a defensive
- 39:20Speaker 1: pose and Shion says, I have to stop the bleeding.
- 39:24Speaker 1: We head to what I believe is a medical kit
- 39:26Speaker 1: with some glowing purple area of it that I don't
- 39:29Speaker 1: know what it is. Maybe it's a battery. I don't know.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And bandages. And I don't know if they're pills or something.
- 39:34Speaker 1: And something is connected to a battery. Everything is just
- 39:38Speaker 1: kind of nondescript to me. But maybe that's because I
- 39:41Speaker 1: don't have a medical kit like this. Who knows? So
- 39:44Speaker 1: Shion and the kid are sitting on the floor under
- 39:46Speaker 1: a floor lamp, maybe the one that was knocked over earlier.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Shion holds the kid's arm up and like cuts off
- 39:52Speaker 1: his sleeve. And the kid says, she said you're in
- 39:55Speaker 1: the special course. Shion sprays something on the cut and says,
- 39:58Speaker 1: starting next month. The kid's like, wow, so your IQ
- 40:02Speaker 1: is really high. Shion puts a pad over the cut
- 40:05Speaker 1: and the kid winces. Shion says, are you making fun
- 40:08Speaker 1: of me? The kid's like, of course not. We see
- 40:11Speaker 1: a wall with like lots and lots of shelves of
- 40:14Speaker 1: trophies on it. And the kid continues. You were probably
- 40:17Speaker 1: able to enter the most prestigious educational institution because you
- 40:20Speaker 1: got an A rank on your two-year-old examination. Like you
- 40:24Speaker 1: have when you're two? What? To be able to progress
- 40:27Speaker 1: to the special course at the age of 12? You're
- 40:29Speaker 1: among the highest of the elite. Huh. I guess. Shion
- 40:34Speaker 1: takes out a syringe and kind of laughs and squeezes
- 40:37Speaker 1: it and the kid shrinks back and he's like, hey,
- 40:40Speaker 1: what are you going to do? Shion says, local anesthetic.
- 40:44Speaker 1: The kid like puts up his hand and he's like,
- 40:45Speaker 1: wait a sec. Numb me and then what? Shion says. Stitches!
- 40:50Speaker 1: The kid's like, stitches? You have experience with that? Shion
- 40:54Speaker 1: smiles and is like, of course not. I'm majoring in ecology.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But I do have basic knowledge of suturing blood vessels. Yay, okay.
- 41:02Speaker 1: The kid looks worried. Yeah. And he's like, knowledge, huh?
- 41:06Speaker 1: He sticks out his arm again, but he looks annoyed.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Shion gives him a shot and is like, it'll go
- 41:11Speaker 1: numb quickly. He takes out some gauze. Just hold it
- 41:14Speaker 1: there with the gauze. He puts it over the cut.
- 41:16Speaker 1: The kid puts his hand over the gauze and is like,
- 41:19Speaker 1: you're really strange. Shion's like, why? The kid says, you
- 41:24Speaker 1: didn't even ask me my name. It's true. Shion smiles,
- 41:28Speaker 1: but I haven't given you mine either. The kid's like,
- 41:32Speaker 1: it's Shion, right? Like the name of the flower? Shion says,
- 41:36Speaker 1: when my mom was younger, she used to love wildflowers.
- 41:39Speaker 1: What about you? Kid says, Nezumi. Shion's like, huh? The
- 41:46Speaker 1: kid says, that's my name. Shion looks super confused. And
- 41:51Speaker 1: he says, Nezumi? Nezumi just blinks. And Shion's like, it
- 41:57Speaker 1: seems a little strange. Nezumi's like, strange? What is? Shion
- 42:03Speaker 1: looks away kind of ashamed and is quiet for a second.
- 42:05Speaker 1: And he's like, hey, I'll get to the stitching. He
- 42:08Speaker 1: takes out a needle. Where did you get this wound?
- 42:11Speaker 1: Nezumi pretty matter-of-factly just says, I was shot. Shion's like,
- 42:17Speaker 1: buy a gun? Nezumi's like, yeah. He looks away. Shion says,
- 42:22Speaker 1: I thought only the hunting club was allowed to use guns.
- 42:26Speaker 1: You thought wrong. Nezumi's like, they're pretty much the same,
- 42:29Speaker 1: only they hunt humans. Shion exhales. What do you mean?
- 42:34Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, among humans, there are those who hunt and
- 42:37Speaker 1: those who are hunted. At least here in number six.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Shion sighs and looks down. Okay, I'm just going to
- 42:43Speaker 1: pause here because... There's a little break here and I
- 42:47Speaker 1: wanted to say something because you're going to be confused
- 42:50Speaker 1: if I don't. So Nezumi means rat or mouse. I
- 42:55Speaker 1: am not going to call him rat like the translations
- 42:58Speaker 1: that I've seen do because I think it's weird to
- 42:59Speaker 1: translate people's names like that. Like it's like if we
- 43:03Speaker 1: called Shion Aster. We didn't do that. So why would
- 43:06Speaker 1: we change Nezumi's name? Or it's like if, you know,
- 43:10Speaker 1: from Sailor Moon, if we call Usagi Bunny. No. No.
- 43:15Speaker 1: That's not her name. Her name is Usagi. Just because
- 43:18Speaker 1: something has a translation does not mean you call them
- 43:21Speaker 1: the translation. But I get in this case, it's like
- 43:24Speaker 1: we're trying to show that, like, you probably wouldn't name
- 43:27Speaker 1: someone rat. So it is weird. But I'm still going
- 43:31Speaker 1: to call him Nezumi. I just wanted to explain that. Also,
- 43:34Speaker 1: in Japan, they don't have a separate word for mouse
- 43:37Speaker 1: and rat, which I thought was super weird. So we
- 43:40Speaker 1: don't know if he actually should be called mouse or rat.
- 43:44Speaker 1: If we're going to translate it. Not that that matters
- 43:46Speaker 1: because I'm not translating it. Anyway, let's continue. We get
- 43:50Speaker 1: an exterior shot of the house and it is still
- 43:52Speaker 1: raining really hard. And we cut to Nezumi who's looking
- 43:56Speaker 1: out the window as Shion does something in the background.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And Shion stands up and turns to him and says,
- 44:02Speaker 1: you should rest here until the storm calms down. There's
- 44:05Speaker 1: a sweater on my bed. Go ahead and put it on.
- 44:07Speaker 1: We see Safu's sweater and like hands picking it up.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Nezumi holds it out and he is on this like
- 44:13Speaker 1: weird second floor platform area where Shion's bed is. Shion
- 44:18Speaker 1: is pouring what I think is water into a mug
- 44:20Speaker 1: below and Nezumi says, you don't have great taste, you
- 44:24Speaker 1: know that? Yeah, that's how I feel about that sweater too.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Shion is like, take a look at yourself. He is
- 44:30Speaker 1: now walking up the stairs carrying two mugs and he
- 44:33Speaker 1: looks up and he gasps slightly. Nezumi is putting the
- 44:37Speaker 1: sweater on. He's facing away from Shion, and we see
- 44:41Speaker 1: Nezumi's back as he's putting on the sweater, and there's
- 44:44Speaker 1: a really big scar on it. Nezumi turns and is like,
- 44:48Speaker 1: what is it? Shion looks away and continues to walk
- 44:52Speaker 1: up the stairs, and he hands the mug to Nezumi,
- 44:55Speaker 1: who's sitting on the bed now, and Nezumi takes a sip,
- 44:58Speaker 1: and he's like, it's good. It's hot chocolate, by the way,
- 45:01Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure. At least that's what it is in
- 45:03Speaker 1: the light novels. He drinks some more as Shion stares
- 45:06Speaker 1: down at him. He's still standing, kind of perplexed. Then
- 45:09Speaker 1: he smiles and also drinks some. Nezumi's like, hey, are
- 45:13Speaker 1: you always this way? Shion says, huh? Nezumi's like, are
- 45:18Speaker 1: you always this defenseless around everyone? Or are all you
- 45:22Speaker 1: blue blood elites this kind heart? You can live without
- 45:24Speaker 1: feeling fear or uneasiness. Shion frowns and he's like, that's not.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Nezumi cuts him off. If not, then why? It's a
- 45:33Speaker 1: good question. Shion looks annoyed and then he sighs and
- 45:36Speaker 1: he's like, it's because you're tiny and you look like
- 45:39Speaker 1: a girl. You come in here all injured and you
- 45:42Speaker 1: still look like you collapse at any second. And he's
- 45:46Speaker 1: kind of looking down. Nezumi's like, and? Shion says, I
- 45:51Speaker 1: don't know. Nezumi is kind of surprised by this and
- 45:54Speaker 1: then he smiles and he looks down at the mug.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Thank you. Aww. We cut to a kitchen scene. With
- 46:01Speaker 1: marble tiled floors and a table with, like, lots of
- 46:05Speaker 1: food on it. And the walls are blue. And the
- 46:08Speaker 1: color palette of this kitchen makes, like, no sense. It's, like,
- 46:13Speaker 1: blue and light green and brownish beige and light salmon? Ugh. Sorry. I, I, no. No.
- 46:21Speaker 1: We hear a beep or a ringing or something. And
- 46:24Speaker 1: a hand presses on that, like, wrist cup thing. And
- 46:27Speaker 1: a notification pops out, like expands like a hologram above it.
- 46:32Speaker 1: So the hologram is like this pink rectangle with like
- 46:35Speaker 1: a circle with a crest in it that has like
- 46:37Speaker 1: a moon drop and leaves and the word number six
- 46:41Speaker 1: also in it. So I guess it's the number six crest.
- 46:44Speaker 1: And then it goes to a map of the city,
- 46:46Speaker 1: which is like a circle with a wall around it
- 46:48Speaker 1: that says the wall. And we also see there's west, north,
- 46:53Speaker 1: east and south districts that are outside of the wall.
- 46:56Speaker 1: And a voice says, early this morning near the Lost
- 46:59Speaker 1: Town area, a pink rectangle pops up over the map
- 47:03Speaker 1: in what I assume is Lost Town. The voice continues,
- 47:07Speaker 1: prisoner VC-103-221 escaped while being transferred to the West Block
- 47:12Speaker 1: Correctional Facility. We see a hexagon near the northwest area
- 47:17Speaker 1: outside the wall that says concentration camp. Yay. And a
- 47:22Speaker 1: little moving circle that's inside the wall area. that, like,
- 47:26Speaker 1: says PTV over it, and it, like, gets crossed out,
- 47:31Speaker 1: and then the word lost in English appears on the screen.
- 47:34Speaker 1: This is all in English, by the way. Now, the
- 47:37Speaker 1: hologram is a picture of Nezumi's mugshot. Fuck! But we
- 47:41Speaker 1: all knew that was coming. And some useful information about him,
- 47:45Speaker 1: which I will tell you. His height is 145.3 centimeters,
- 47:48Speaker 1: which is about 4'9. His weight is 37.1 kilograms, which
- 47:50Speaker 1: is about 82 pounds. He's 12. He's a guy. His
- 47:58Speaker 1: eye color is gray. And his degree of risk is
- 48:01Speaker 1: triple A. I don't know if there's more than that,
- 48:04Speaker 1: but that sounds pretty bad. We cut back to the map.
- 48:07Speaker 1: The voice continues. And a designated area has been marked
- 48:10Speaker 1: for restricted entry. We cut to a woman looking bored
- 48:14Speaker 1: and she like presses on the screen. And we hear
- 48:17Speaker 1: a voice say, reply acknowledged. The hologram goes away. The
- 48:21Speaker 1: woman who has brown hair that's in like a low
- 48:24Speaker 1: side ponytail. sighs, and kind of lays back against the
- 48:28Speaker 1: couch and closes her eyes. She is in the living
- 48:31Speaker 1: room area of the open living space, which has, you know,
- 48:35Speaker 1: the kitchen connected. And also there's a teal carpet in
- 48:38Speaker 1: this space, which is even worse. This color palette just
- 48:40Speaker 1: gets weirder. And the door slides open behind her and
- 48:46Speaker 1: Shion walks in. And the person who is probably his mom,
- 48:49Speaker 1: because who else, is like, have you finished your report?
- 48:53Speaker 1: Shion says, no. No, not yet. There is ringing again
- 48:57Speaker 1: and his mom stands and is like, there's a message
- 49:00Speaker 1: from the security bureau. Be sure to read it and
- 49:03Speaker 1: reply to it. She walks towards the kitchen. Shion's like, okay.
- 49:07Speaker 1: He presses his wristband. Screen pops up and Shion looks
- 49:11Speaker 1: real freaked out, obviously because he sees Nezumi on it.
- 49:15Speaker 1: We get a bigger version of the screen now so
- 49:17Speaker 1: I can actually see more information because it was a
- 49:19Speaker 1: little bit blurry when I zoomed in last time. So
- 49:23Speaker 1: we see that they've also listed injuries and like defining
- 49:27Speaker 1: things from Nezumi. So he has a laceration on his
- 49:32Speaker 1: left shoulder that's listed as injury. Then he has a
- 49:35Speaker 1: burn on his back, which is a scar we saw
- 49:38Speaker 1: that's listed as scar. And then it says blow and
- 49:42Speaker 1: it's pointing to his left knee, which is an injury. Ow.
- 49:45Speaker 1: We hear his mom say, I wonder what he did.
- 49:48Speaker 1: She's stirring some sort of white soup thing. But he's
- 49:51Speaker 1: got a VC chip inside him, so the search system
- 49:53Speaker 1: will find him in no time. Fuck. She presses a
- 49:56Speaker 1: button on the stove. I think she's turning it off
- 49:59Speaker 1: and says, let's have dinner. She looks over at Shion,
- 50:02Speaker 1: who is still looking at the hologram and is like,
- 50:05Speaker 1: what's wrong? Shion flinches. Huh? It's nothing. Hey, mom. We
- 50:10Speaker 1: cut to Nezumi laying in Shion's bed and the room
- 50:13Speaker 1: is dark. We hear the door open and he looks
- 50:16Speaker 1: over and he sits up and Shion is coming in
- 50:19Speaker 1: and he says, don't turn on the light. Shion closes
- 50:22Speaker 1: the door. I can't see anything in the dark. Nezumi's like,
- 50:26Speaker 1: you don't have to. Shion is making his way along
- 50:29Speaker 1: the wall and Nezumi chuckles. You don't even know your
- 50:33Speaker 1: way around your own room? We hear Shion say, sad
- 50:36Speaker 1: to tell you, but I'm not nocturnal. You're okay in
- 50:38Speaker 1: the dark? Nezumi's like, I'm a rat after all. Of
- 50:42Speaker 1: course I'm nocturnal. We hear Shion say, VC-103-221. Fuck. Nezumi's
- 50:48Speaker 1: face falls. Shion says, It was on the news. You're
- 50:52Speaker 1: quite famous, aren't you? Nezumi shifts his position on the
- 50:55Speaker 1: bed like he's ready to go into fight or flight,
- 50:57Speaker 1: and he frowns. The real thing's more impressive, isn't it?
- 51:01Speaker 1: His hands tense. And then we see a tray cut
- 51:04Speaker 1: into the frame with cake, soup, and a spoon on it.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Shion's like, I brought you some stew and cherry cake. Oh,
- 51:11Speaker 1: Nezumi just stares slack jawed for a moment. And then
- 51:14Speaker 1: he just kind of relaxes back onto the bed. And
- 51:17Speaker 1: he says, is this OK? Jian's like, of course. I
- 51:22Speaker 1: told mom the report had been giving me trouble, so
- 51:24Speaker 1: I wanted to eat in my room. Nezumi's face relaxes now, too,
- 51:27Speaker 1: and he laughs. He reaches for the tray. It smells great.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Jian's like, yeah, my mom's a really good cook. Nezumi
- 51:36Speaker 1: is eating some cake now. You're supposed to eat The
- 51:38Speaker 1: stew first, before your dessert. And he says, mmm, delicious.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Shion sits down on a bed too now and kind
- 51:46Speaker 1: of slumps over and says, will you be able to escape?
- 51:50Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, of course. Shion says, what about the VC chip?
- 51:55Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, it's still inside me. Shion turns. Then Nezumi's like,
- 52:01Speaker 1: it's okay. That toy of a VC chip's been useless
- 52:03Speaker 1: for a while now. Shion says, toy? Nezumi, still eating
- 52:08Speaker 1: the cake, is like, Actually, you could say that the
- 52:10Speaker 1: entirety of number six is a gigantic toy. Hmm. Shion
- 52:15Speaker 1: kind of gasps and looks really stressed, like he's being
- 52:18Speaker 1: forced to confront something he wasn't thinking he was going
- 52:20Speaker 1: to today. Nezumi continues, Do you know how it was made?
- 52:24Speaker 1: Shion's like, Uh, yeah. We're now seeing some buildings that
- 52:29Speaker 1: look like they're underwater, and we're kind of looking up at,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I guess, the water's surface and light is streaming down.
- 52:34Speaker 1: And we hear Shion say, The Babylon Treaty. In the
- 52:39Speaker 1: previous war, after humanity lost more than one-half of all
- 52:42Speaker 1: its inhabitable land, all armaments were outlawed. Fuck. We see
- 52:47Speaker 1: more buildings that I also think are underwater. He continues.
- 52:51Speaker 1: And city-states were created to govern the remaining six areas.
- 52:54Speaker 1: We see the number six logo crest thing. Number six
- 52:58Speaker 1: was one of those areas. Nuzumi chuckles, and then he
- 53:02Speaker 1: has some stew. Shion's like, what were you arrested for?
- 53:06Speaker 1: They said you escaped en route to the correctional facility.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, that's a lie. I was originally at the
- 53:12Speaker 1: correctional facility. The security bureau brought me here to number six.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Shion's like, you were brought here? Nezumi's like, exactly. Shion says,
- 53:22Speaker 1: where were they? They both kind of look over at
- 53:25Speaker 1: the window and we see a shot of the Moondrop building.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Shion walks over to the railing and looks out at
- 53:32Speaker 1: the window's We can kind of barely see the moon
- 53:35Speaker 1: drop off in the distance. He says, it's a city hall.
- 53:39Speaker 1: He looks back. Why would they take you to the
- 53:42Speaker 1: center of the city? Nezumi's like, it's better you don't know.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Shion's like, but I'm asking you. Nezumi puts the empty
- 53:50Speaker 1: tray down on the bed and says, shut up already.
- 53:53Speaker 1: He lays down and he turns on his side facing
- 53:56Speaker 1: away from Shion. Just let me get some sleep. Shion
- 53:59Speaker 1: kind of huffs. Can you not tell me? Nezumi's like,
- 54:04Speaker 1: Can you forget something you've been told? Can you pretend
- 54:06Speaker 1: you never heard it? Can you put on a clueless
- 54:09Speaker 1: face and pretend you don't know anything? You may be smart,
- 54:12Speaker 1: but I don't think you're mature enough to do that yet.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Shion sits down on the bed. Well, Nezumi sits up. Hey.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Shion looks over. Nezumi continues. You get it, right? You're
- 54:24Speaker 1: in a ton of danger yourself. Sheltering a VC, not
- 54:27Speaker 1: notifying the security bureau. And in the end, you've done
- 54:30Speaker 1: all of that. Shion looks away. I get it, okay?
- 54:34Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, then don't ask. For my part, I won't
- 54:38Speaker 1: ever speak of it. He's quiet for a second, then
- 54:40Speaker 1: he smirks. I'll keep my mouth shut about your screaming
- 54:43Speaker 1: as well. Fuck, Shion gasps and blushes so bright that
- 54:48Speaker 1: it fucks up the compositing of the scene like it
- 54:50Speaker 1: doesn't look right. Nezumi stands on the bed and he's like,
- 54:54Speaker 1: I was blown away. He acts like he's sneaking and
- 54:57Speaker 1: he says, I sneak into your garden and I'm thinking,
- 55:00Speaker 1: what should I do now? Shion crawls on the bed
- 55:03Speaker 1: towards him and he's like, stop it. He kind of
- 55:06Speaker 1: lunges for him and he misses. Nezumi continues. Then all
- 55:09Speaker 1: of a sudden the window flies open and you pop
- 55:12Speaker 1: out and Shion's like, stop it. Cut it out. Nezumi
- 55:17Speaker 1: runs to the railing and yells. And then he laughs
- 55:21Speaker 1: as Shion is bent over on the bed in shame,
- 55:24Speaker 1: blushing some more, but it doesn't look as messed up here.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Nezumi continues. That was the first time I've ever seen
- 55:30Speaker 1: anyone make that face. Shion's like, shut up! He's really,
- 55:35Speaker 1: really blushing. He lunges at Nezumi, but Nezumi evades, grabs
- 55:40Speaker 1: him by the arm, and pushes him against the railing,
- 55:43Speaker 1: and then he, like, trips him, so Shion falls down
- 55:45Speaker 1: onto the bed, like, on his stomach. Nezumi holds him there,
- 55:49Speaker 1: Shion's arm is behind his back, and... Nezumi reaches for
- 55:53Speaker 1: like the tray where the spoon is and he kind
- 55:55Speaker 1: of like fumbles around for a second to find it,
- 55:57Speaker 1: which is really cool. He picks it up. He flips
- 56:00Speaker 1: it around in his hand and he presses it against
- 56:01Speaker 1: Shion's neck. He says, if this were a knife, he
- 56:05Speaker 1: slides it across Shion's throat and then whispers into his ear,
- 56:09Speaker 1: you'd be dead in seconds. Oh, Shion's like, amazing. Nezumi
- 56:18Speaker 1: kind of bristles. Shion continues. There's a trick to it, right? Jeez, dude.
- 56:24Speaker 1: How do you render someone's body motionless like this? There's
- 56:27Speaker 1: gotta be some nerve that you're applying pressure to. Nezumi
- 56:31Speaker 1: looks so confused. He blinks a few times, and then
- 56:35Speaker 1: he just starts to laugh. He rolls off of Shion
- 56:39Speaker 1: and onto his back, but he's still kind of holding
- 56:41Speaker 1: Shion's wrist that, you know, he had behind his back,
- 56:44Speaker 1: and he just laughs. Nezumi says... You're messed up. You're
- 56:49Speaker 1: really messed up. You're complete natural. And continues to laugh.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Shion laughs too for a second and then he stops abruptly.
- 56:58Speaker 1: He pulls his wrist away kind of from Nezumi's hand.
- 57:02Speaker 1: So actually now he's holding Nezumi's hand with his hand.
- 57:05Speaker 1: And he sits up and he's like, you're really warm.
- 57:08Speaker 1: He puts his forehead against Nezumi's forehead and says, you've
- 57:13Speaker 1: got a fever. I'll bring some antibiotics. No, we don't
- 57:16Speaker 1: even know if he has a bacterial infection. Stop that.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Nezumi's eyes are closed now, and he's like, it's fine.
- 57:23Speaker 1: I just want to sleep. Shion says, if you sleep
- 57:27Speaker 1: with a fever like this, your body will exhaust itself. What?
- 57:31Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, you're pretty warm yourself. He smiles, eyes still closed,
- 57:36Speaker 1: and he tightens his grip on Shion's hand. So living
- 57:39Speaker 1: humans are warm. Fuck. Shion stares down at him, a
- 57:46Speaker 1: little shocked, like we all are. We fade to black.
- 57:50Speaker 1: We are now looking up through trees. The sky is
- 57:54Speaker 1: bright and there's birdsong. And we cut to that really
- 57:57Speaker 1: cool tiered water feature outside the house that now I
- 57:59Speaker 1: know is not like a storm issue thing. And then
- 58:03Speaker 1: to Shion's room. We see him standing at the sliding doors.
- 58:07Speaker 1: They're open. We cut to a car tire going places.
- 58:11Speaker 1: I guess it belongs to a police car. It's slowly
- 58:14Speaker 1: driving and then it stops. We see his mom in
- 58:17Speaker 1: the kitchen stirring something on the stove. There's a notification sound.
- 58:21Speaker 1: She picks up a phone and says, Hello? Huh? Shion
- 58:27Speaker 1: is standing on the balcony and we hear his mom say,
- 58:30Speaker 1: The security bureau? Fuck! The breeze picks up and we
- 58:36Speaker 1: hear the moondrop cry and we cut to the two mugs.
- 58:40Speaker 1: And then we go to the ending theme, which is
- 58:43Speaker 1: Rakutose no Yoru by Eimer, I guess? Which is like,
- 58:48Speaker 1: we see like two sets of footsteps in the snow
- 58:51Speaker 1: and we're like panning up on ruins that are like
- 58:53Speaker 1: in a snowscape. And then we see the two main
- 58:55Speaker 1: characters older, like doing kid playground stuff. Like they're on
- 58:59Speaker 1: a swing set and then they're on a jungle gym
- 59:01Speaker 1: and they're doing other things and whatever. And then Nezumi
- 59:03Speaker 1: throws a snowball and it drifts through the air and
- 59:07Speaker 1: Shion catches it, which is a weird thing to do
- 59:09Speaker 1: with a snowball. and then he is surrounded by sakura
- 59:12Speaker 1: trees and he looks down at his hand and the
- 59:15Speaker 1: snowball is gone because it's spring now and then he
- 59:19Speaker 1: runs off and that's it and then we go to
- 59:21Speaker 1: the preview but I'm not going to do the previews
- 59:23Speaker 1: for this or anything ever and that's it yay we
- 59:27Speaker 1: made it through the episode Give yourself a pat on
- 59:31Speaker 1: the back because I can't do it for you. I'm
- 59:35Speaker 1: proud of you because this took me forever to record.
- 59:38Speaker 1: So thanks for sticking it out. Closing thoughts. So that
- 59:44Speaker 1: was a bunch of things. First of all, before I forget,
- 59:47Speaker 1: Nezumi's voice is super weird. It's way too low for
- 59:50Speaker 1: a 12 year old. Like he sounds like an adult man.
- 59:53Speaker 1: I don't know why, because this is just like the
- 59:55Speaker 1: voice that he has the whole time. I don't know
- 59:58Speaker 1: why they didn't get someone else to do the voice
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: here or try to get this dude to make a
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: higher voice, not sound like an adult person. But yeah,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: way too low, way too low. The whole thing about
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: living humans being warm, we've done that one other time,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I think, in all of the shows that we've watched.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I believe that was in, well, I mean, I know
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: it was in Windbreaker. Pretty sure it was in Windbreaker
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: and not just the manga. Something about like Sakura saying
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: something like that because he just like has no contact
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: with humans you know like it's all violence that he
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: has contact with humans through but uh this one is
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: concerning the living part is concerning to me the part
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: that he is 12 and he said living humans like
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: what what maybe he just lives around dogs or something
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I hope but uh I'm sure we'll find out more
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: about that so yeah I thought the dynamic between these
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: two characters, Shion and Nezumi, was pretty good. I like
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that Shion isn't fazed by any of this. He's just
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: excited about everything, including the things that were scary, like
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: being incapacitated onto the bed and then having this dude
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: that you don't really know say if it was a knife,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: he would have killed you. I like that, yeah, that
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: he's like, wow, I'm just learning things and learning things
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: is fun. And I like that it catches Nezumi off
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: guard because obviously Shion is not very normal. So their
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: interactions were fun. I was I didn't say it during
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: the episode, thank God. But the whole thing with Shion
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: treating Nezumi's wounds very much reminded me of episode 11
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: of Banana Fish. In fact, I wonder if Atsuko Asano
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: like read that part of the manga and was like,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I want to do that and I want to do
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: it earlier because this is my favorite part or something
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: like that. But I liked that part. I thought the
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: interaction was just really good overall between them. So I'm
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: interested to see how that shapes up, if we can
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: keep these characters, you know, being kind of cute together.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: But regardless, Nezumi is in a lot of trouble, and
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: so is Shion now. Especially if the police are there,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: because that's really bad. I don't think you're supposed to
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: harbor violent criminals, which is what the VC stands for,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: by the way. So, yeah. Bad shit. Um... I'm trying
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: to think if there's anything else I really wanted to say.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: I kind of don't think so. I kind of feel
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: like I talked for long enough. So, yeah. I think
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: it's a pretty strong first meeting of the two main characters. So, yeah.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Hopefully you're interested to see where this goes. And I'm
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: going to stop now because I am tired and I'm thirsty.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: And it's really humid outside and rainy and cool. All
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the weird things together or something. So... Anyway, I hope
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: you have a really good whatever. And I assume we're
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: all going to be happy and alive by the time
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: you hear this because it's going to be several weeks
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: after I record this before it's published. So, yeah, hope
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you're still having a good whatever. And I will see
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: you soonish, I hope. I mean, in like, you know,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: speaking form or whatever. So, yep. Later, weebs.
