- 1:10Speaker 4: A group of counselors arrive at Camp Crystal Lake, hired
- 1:59Speaker 4: to bring it back to life. The cabin sits still,
- 2:02Speaker 4: The lake doesn't move for a moment. It almost feels untouched,
- 2:05Speaker 4: like whatever happened here is finally over. It isn't. This
- 2:09Speaker 4: is beyond the blood and tonight we step into Friday
- 2:11Speaker 4: the thirteenth, where a quiet summer job slips almost unnoticed,
- 2:16Speaker 4: into something darker. Your voice in the distance, a shape
- 2:19Speaker 4: between the trees. One counts are gone, then another, and
- 2:24Speaker 4: the camp, piece by piece starts to empty. No alarms,
- 2:28Speaker 4: no escape, just a slow sinking realization that something has
- 2:31Speaker 4: been here longer than they have and it's not letting
- 2:34Speaker 4: anyone leave.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Steve should never have opened this place again.
- 2:59Speaker 1: There's been too much trouble here.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Did you know that a young boy drowned the year.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Before those two others were killed.
- 3:08Speaker 5: The counselors weren't paying any attention.
- 3:10Speaker 1: They were making love while that young boy drowned.
- 3:16Speaker 6: His name was Jason.
- 3:19Speaker 5: So, dear listeners, I want I want you guys to
- 3:21Speaker 5: know right off the bat that I'm currently on a
- 3:23Speaker 5: bit of a forgiveness path with our guests here today,
- 3:28Speaker 5: and I'm really hoping that if everyone can rally on
- 3:30Speaker 5: my side and I can put on a good performance tonight,
- 3:33Speaker 5: that that me and PiZZ will end up on good
- 3:36Speaker 5: terms by the end of this episode.
- 3:40Speaker 2: There's a lot riding on this episode. There, there's a lot,
- 3:44Speaker 2: and I don't know that the deck is We've gotten
- 3:49Speaker 2: off to a rocky start, that's for sure, So I
- 3:51Speaker 2: mean the deck is already stacked against you, But yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 2: who knows by the end of this Uh, we'll see,
- 3:58Speaker 2: We'll just see, we'll see, Okay.
- 3:59Speaker 4: I feel like I'm here to play mediator between you two.
- 4:03Speaker 2: The road to redemption is long and winding, and you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: I wish you luck.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Thank you, sir, Thank you, sir. I appreciate it. Well,
- 4:12Speaker 5: I'll have you know, as well as the audience that
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm a long term admirer and supporter of your work,
- 4:18Speaker 5: So this is an honor to have you on as
- 4:20Speaker 5: a guest on our show.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Well, thank you. I appreciate the invite, And really the
- 4:29Speaker 2: only reason I'm here is because of Steve. Steve. Steve
- 4:34Speaker 2: begged and pleaded, and I appreciate that.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Man.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I was like, is Chris going to be a part
- 4:38Speaker 2: of this thing? And he was like unfortunately yes, And
- 4:42Speaker 2: I said, well god, and he was like, but please, man, please,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, and I was like, all right.
- 4:46Speaker 4: All right, PiZZ did it out of respect to me?
- 4:49Speaker 5: Yes, I thought the ass kissing was going to work.
- 4:52Speaker 5: I put on lipstick and everything.
- 4:54Speaker 4: No, man, you're digging yourself out of a hole. That's
- 4:57Speaker 4: not easy. That's a whole episode, pretty deep hole.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But yeah, like I said, you know, I'm going to
- 5:03Speaker 2: remain open minded and we'll see what happens.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Oh my god. Well, I'm optimistic. I'm hoping on this
- 5:11Speaker 5: year's staff Picks episode where we're finally going to be
- 5:14Speaker 5: covering I know people have been asking. We've got a
- 5:16Speaker 5: couple of people reach out and ask why we haven't
- 5:17Speaker 5: really covered many you know, franchises on our main episodes
- 5:22Speaker 5: with the commentaries, and honestly, it's because I think Steve
- 5:27Speaker 5: you can agree, we've kind of been kind of been
- 5:29Speaker 5: enjoying doing a little bit of some deeper cut stuff
- 5:32Speaker 5: for the main episodes totally. I know I wouldn't call
- 5:35Speaker 5: Reanimator a deep cut, but that was so much fun
- 5:38Speaker 5: because that was one of the best commentary tracks we've
- 5:41Speaker 5: ever we've ever discussed. I would encourage everyone to go
- 5:44Speaker 5: back and give that a listen.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Very informative and we had a lot of fun with
- 5:47Speaker 4: up Yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 5: But that's why we have staff picks now, where we
- 5:50Speaker 5: can talk about movies that you know, maybe we don't
- 5:52Speaker 5: feel have exactly the commentaries at a level that we
- 5:57Speaker 5: can break down and dissect in the way that we
- 5:58Speaker 5: like to on the main feed. And obviously with these
- 6:01Speaker 5: staff pick episodes, we try to get incredible guests alongside.
- 6:04Speaker 5: So his is here joining us, give us a little
- 6:06Speaker 5: bit of background man on your love for for the
- 6:09Speaker 5: first Friday of the thirteenth film.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh goodness, I would love to know what the order
- 6:19Speaker 2: was that I watched them all in. I know part
- 6:21Speaker 2: seven was the first one, so I got thrown right
- 6:24Speaker 2: into the middle of Zombie Jason. But I would love
- 6:29Speaker 2: to know where I went from there, because at that point,
- 6:32Speaker 2: all the movies, all the movies had been off limits
- 6:35Speaker 2: to me up until that point, so now I was free.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And so I don't remember when I watched the first one,
- 6:43Speaker 2: though I do have like some vague memories of watching it,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and of course, you know, being like, who's this old lady?
- 6:51Speaker 2: You know, where's Jason? Of course, you know, I mean,
- 6:53Speaker 2: I was, I was, I was, I was a kid,
- 6:56Speaker 2: but I mean I'd seen all these movies with Jason
- 6:58Speaker 2: in them, and like, were or where's Jason? Who's this
- 7:02Speaker 2: old lady? And what is she doing here? And so
- 7:05Speaker 2: I think it, you know, The Friday the Thirteenth series
- 7:10Speaker 2: is unique in that it's one of the it's really,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I think, the only long running franchise where unanimously everyone
- 7:21Speaker 2: agrees that the first entry is the best and or
- 7:26Speaker 2: it's the only It's the only long running franchise where
- 7:30Speaker 2: it's unanimously sort of the first one is not the
- 7:35Speaker 2: best in the series, and that's because of the lack
- 7:38Speaker 2: of Jason. But so it took me maybe a few
- 7:43Speaker 2: years to really appreciate what a good slasher movie. It
- 7:51Speaker 2: is to really appreciate the atmosphere and the characters. Now,
- 7:55Speaker 2: I always liked the kills. I can vividly remember watching
- 8:01Speaker 2: you know that first well, not the first kill, but
- 8:03Speaker 2: the kill of Annie, that throat slashing, and like, it
- 8:12Speaker 2: just looked so real to me that like, it kind
- 8:15Speaker 2: of shocked me the first time I saw it. Now,
- 8:18Speaker 2: of course you watch it now in four K, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: you can see that the appliance on her throat is
- 8:23Speaker 2: a different color than her skin tone. But it still
- 8:26Speaker 2: looks great. It still looks great. But as a kid,
- 8:30Speaker 2: like watching that little slit open up and blood come out,
- 8:34Speaker 2: it was just WHOA. I'd never seen anything like that.
- 8:37Speaker 2: It was really well done. But now I mean Friday,
- 8:41Speaker 2: the original Friday the thirteenth is way up there. For me.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's still it's not my I wouldn't say it's necessarily
- 8:50Speaker 2: my favorite of the series, but I think people overlook
- 8:55Speaker 2: how good it is, how well made it is, just
- 9:00Speaker 2: because you know, a guy in a hockey mask isn't
- 9:02Speaker 2: the one doing all the killing. Yeah, so yeah, I
- 9:08Speaker 2: love it. I think it's really well made. The cast
- 9:10Speaker 2: is great, the characters are great. I think it's i
- 9:12Speaker 2: think it's well written and that atmosphere is just so
- 9:16Speaker 2: bleak and just evil has that great evil kind of atmosphere.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So yeah, and look, I've visited that camp on at
- 9:31Speaker 2: least two different occasions, and it's like being on holy ground.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Oh man.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been there, and I've also been to so
- 9:45Speaker 5: I'm in New Jersey. So we did a podcast that
- 9:49Speaker 5: I was originally a part of years ago. We did
- 9:51Speaker 5: an event at the Blairstown Diner, which is famous for
- 9:54Speaker 5: being the diner from the movie. It's only a few
- 9:56Speaker 5: miles away from the camp and they do occasionally. I
- 10:00Speaker 5: believe they do it every year in the summer. They
- 10:02Speaker 5: do screenings of the movie there as well as I
- 10:05Speaker 5: think they have a couple a couple of the original cabins.
- 10:08Speaker 5: They're not exactly in great condition, they're kind of falling apart,
- 10:11Speaker 5: but they have a little bit of a like a
- 10:13Speaker 5: walk through and you can kind of get like water
- 10:15Speaker 5: from Camp Crystal Lake and they do those little gimmick things.
- 10:18Speaker 6: But it's it's really surreal to be there.
- 10:22Speaker 5: And you know, one of the things about Friday the
- 10:24Speaker 5: Thirteenth is growing up, this was a movie, like I
- 10:29Speaker 5: I knew of Jason Vorhees long before I had seen
- 10:33Speaker 5: Friday the Thirteenth, right like, and I remember being blown
- 10:37Speaker 5: away watching Scream and during the opening scene with Drew Barrymore,
- 10:41Speaker 5: he gets her with that question, you know who is
- 10:43Speaker 5: a killer in the first Friday the thirteenth. She says
- 10:46Speaker 5: Jason Vorhees and he says wrong. Remember being like, what
- 10:49Speaker 5: the hell are they talking about? Jason Vorhes is the
- 10:51Speaker 5: killer the whole time? And then I remember being at
- 10:56Speaker 5: my mom's best friend's house and she had a stack
- 10:59Speaker 5: of DVD and I was obsessed. So I'm looking through
- 11:03Speaker 5: them and it was that that DVD that had that
- 11:05Speaker 5: really terrible artwork. It had had a figure on it
- 11:09Speaker 5: with a knife and it said unrated in like a
- 11:11Speaker 5: slashed section of the DVD cover. It looked like the
- 11:15Speaker 5: DVD cover was like split open and said unrated Friday
- 11:18Speaker 5: the Thirteenth, And I had the silhouette on it, and
- 11:22Speaker 5: my mom was like, yeah, maybe it's time, Maybe it's
- 11:24Speaker 5: time we show you that. And we finally watched it
- 11:27Speaker 5: and I was terrified.
- 11:33Speaker 2: What's sad is that there's a lot of really bad
- 11:36Speaker 2: artwork associated with that movie, when when the poster art
- 11:40Speaker 2: is just beautiful. Oh yeah, and that poster art is
- 11:45Speaker 2: something like I remember seeing it on the VHS long
- 11:48Speaker 2: before I ever rented it and just looking at that
- 11:51Speaker 2: that artwork on the box was scary, Like it just
- 11:56Speaker 2: creates this really ominous tone. Remember looking at it and
- 12:00Speaker 2: thinking like, man, like these people are stuck out in
- 12:03Speaker 2: the woods and clearly somebody's out to get them, like
- 12:07Speaker 2: they're they're goners, They're in trouble. I still think that's
- 12:11Speaker 2: just when it comes to horror poster art, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 2: Friday the thirteenth is still way up there for me.
- 12:18Speaker 2: But which is which is so shocking because you see
- 12:21Speaker 2: some of the the artwork that were that was on
- 12:23Speaker 2: the the mini VHS releases and DVDs and stuff, and
- 12:26Speaker 2: it's like they just picked the worst looking just some horrible,
- 12:30Speaker 2: horrible stuff.
- 12:32Speaker 5: We were funny enough.
- 12:33Speaker 6: We were talking about that today with Eraser in our
- 12:36Speaker 6: group chat.
- 12:36Speaker 5: We were like, is this.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Four K art work just low effort?
- 12:41Speaker 6: Welcome to the Eraser episode of Beyond the Blood.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Oh no, yeah, this was Fride thirteenth, was I mean,
- 12:52Speaker 5: like we always look back and you talk about The
- 12:55Speaker 5: Exorcist and how obviously that was what started for me
- 12:57Speaker 5: with The Exorcist, as well as many other people. But
- 13:00Speaker 5: Friday the thirteenth was on another, a whole other level,
- 13:04Speaker 5: because I remember, and I talk about it here all
- 13:06Speaker 5: the time. I used to go on arrow indthhead dot com,
- 13:09Speaker 5: you know, the joke boop site, and they used to
- 13:12Speaker 5: have the kill of the Day section, and it was
- 13:14Speaker 5: these little like dot wave files that you could watch
- 13:18Speaker 5: different kills every day. And over the years that I
- 13:22Speaker 5: snuck on that site, you know, when my mom wasn't
- 13:24Speaker 5: on the phone or something like that because of dial up,
- 13:27Speaker 5: I remember, yep, yep, I remember watching those, and at
- 13:31Speaker 5: some point through all of those I had seen all
- 13:34Speaker 5: of the kills, and I remember it was like it
- 13:38Speaker 5: was like Marci with the head of the axe, I
- 13:40Speaker 5: remember seeing, and I remember seeing Andy with the throat slit,
- 13:44Speaker 5: and I even remember I remember, I believe it was
- 13:50Speaker 5: Steve Christie, and I do. The only reason I remember
- 13:53Speaker 5: seeing Steve Christie's is because I could never turn up
- 13:57Speaker 5: the volume. And the scene started on the job on
- 14:01Speaker 5: the Joe Blow site when he puts his hands up
- 14:03Speaker 5: and does that, Oh Hi, what are you doing now
- 14:06Speaker 5: in this mess? And I could never hear that, so
- 14:08Speaker 5: I just knew that he spoke before getting stabbed, and
- 14:12Speaker 5: then finally seeing the movie and realizing that it was
- 14:17Speaker 5: not Jason Vorhees for myself. And now, what's funny about it,
- 14:23Speaker 5: I think, is how much I find Missus Vorhees to
- 14:29Speaker 5: be absolutely terrifying. I just rewatched this today and that
- 14:35Speaker 5: monologue that she gives in the final act of the
- 14:37Speaker 5: movie is way scarier to me than Jason Vorhees will
- 14:41Speaker 5: ever be, if I'm being honest.
- 14:44Speaker 2: She was very believable, and like, what's funny is like,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you know, she could have just phoned that performance in,
- 14:53Speaker 2: and because she was doing that just for the money
- 14:56Speaker 2: to buy a new car, and this was a movie
- 14:59Speaker 2: she' she didn't think anybody would ever see, so she
- 15:03Speaker 2: could have just phoned that in, But you know, she
- 15:06Speaker 2: she was a professional and she I mean, yeah, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 2: you there's a reason why Betsy Palmer is still so
- 15:15Speaker 2: loved by horror fandom, you know. And I could have
- 15:25Speaker 2: met her one year and I forget what happened, and
- 15:29Speaker 2: I didn't go to the convention where she was at,
- 15:32Speaker 2: and I've kicked myself ever since. I would have loved
- 15:34Speaker 2: to have met her, because she really embraced it. You know,
- 15:38Speaker 2: after many years of not embracing it, she finally did
- 15:43Speaker 2: embrace it. And like she just seemed to be so
- 15:46Speaker 2: kind and sweet and loving when it came to the fans.
- 15:50Speaker 2: And still I just kicked myself that I didn't. I
- 15:54Speaker 2: didn't go yeah.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Man, that's that's a shame. Did She is so every
- 15:59Speaker 5: interview with her, even in Chrystal Lake Memories, like she's fantastic.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Way.
- 16:04Speaker 5: I did listen to the commentary track for this, which
- 16:07Speaker 5: she has some parts, and I love her talking about
- 16:10Speaker 5: all the inappropriate jokes that she would make on set
- 16:14Speaker 5: and all the fun that she would have. And you know,
- 16:17Speaker 5: she talked about how she was, you know, doing theater work,
- 16:22Speaker 5: and you know, nobody ever thought that she would stoop
- 16:25Speaker 5: down to this level to do a horror film like this,
- 16:28Speaker 5: and it she just sounded lovely. And she could have
- 16:34Speaker 5: washed her hands of this forever and said, hey, I'm
- 16:36Speaker 5: never going to talk about this again.
- 16:38Speaker 6: I'm never going to be involved in this stuff. But
- 16:40Speaker 6: she seemed to.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Have stuck around pretty much until her passing in twenty
- 16:44Speaker 5: fifteen being involved in it. Because of her long career.
- 16:49Speaker 5: This is probably the fan base that embraced her the
- 16:52Speaker 5: most I would. I would probably easily assume, right.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Like I can't remember. I was watching the movie one
- 16:58Speaker 2: time and Mom walked into the room right when Betsy
- 17:05Speaker 2: Palmer appeared or somewhere Betsy Palmer had just appeared, and
- 17:09Speaker 2: my mom goes, what is she doing in that? Because
- 17:15Speaker 2: to her, like to my mother's generation, she was like,
- 17:17Speaker 2: you know, she was like the girl next door. She
- 17:19Speaker 2: was on she was everywhere. She had dated like I forgot,
- 17:24Speaker 2: was it James Dean or like James Cagney or something
- 17:26Speaker 2: like she was she was. I don't think she was
- 17:29Speaker 2: a huge star back in the day, but she was
- 17:31Speaker 2: in a lot of stuff, and later on in her
- 17:35Speaker 2: career she was in a lot. She was on television
- 17:37Speaker 2: all the time. So like my mother's generation knew her
- 17:40Speaker 2: as you know Betsy Palmer, who's on TV all the time,
- 17:44Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And now she saw her
- 17:46Speaker 2: in Friday the thirteenth, I was like, what happened? You know,
- 17:50Speaker 2: she must have fallen on really hard times or something.
- 17:53Speaker 2: But like she said, it was such just like just
- 17:57Speaker 2: like disdain in her voice. What is she doing in that? Yeah?
- 18:03Speaker 5: I did, Uh, she did date James Dean for approximately
- 18:07Speaker 5: eight months before meeting her husband.
- 18:10Speaker 6: Interesting, man, what a yeah this, Steve?
- 18:15Speaker 5: What about?
- 18:15Speaker 2: Uh?
- 18:15Speaker 5: What about for you?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Man?
- 18:16Speaker 5: I know that you're a massive.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Can I tell one more Betsy Palmer story? Please? Please
- 18:22Speaker 2: do so? I was so Peter Bracky, who wrote Crystal
- 18:26Speaker 2: Lake Memories. Of course, he was telling me one time
- 18:30Speaker 2: that after he'd interviewed Betsy for the book, that he
- 18:37Speaker 2: got a package in the mail and it was cookies
- 18:41Speaker 2: that Betsy Palm. Betsy Palmer baked him cookies and sent
- 18:44Speaker 2: him cookies. That's incredible. And I was like, tell me
- 18:48Speaker 2: you've you've kept those in like the freezer preserved. He
- 18:51Speaker 2: was like, no, I eat them. So but that was
- 18:54Speaker 2: who Betsy Palmer. That was who Betsy Palmer was like.
- 18:57Speaker 2: She she liked, she liked him, and was like, I'm
- 18:59Speaker 2: gonna make this guy some cookies and send him to him.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I'd be so that.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Yeah, dude, that's the legacy that that you and I
- 19:06Speaker 5: Steve are going to have with Buddy Cooper because of
- 19:08Speaker 5: the posters. I know, and we're always gonna remember Buddy
- 19:11Speaker 5: Cooper for sending us moldy smelling original one sheets of
- 19:15Speaker 5: the Mutilator.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I'm not gonna lie. It was pretty it was pretty cool.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I got him too, I got I got the Mute,
- 19:23Speaker 2: I got the Mutilator, and I got spring Break or
- 19:26Speaker 2: fall Break Yeah, fall Break. I'm sorry, yeah yeah yeah
- 19:29Speaker 2: yeah yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 6: He sent us each a fall Break and a Mutilator poster.
- 19:32Speaker 4: It was so kind. I was not expecting that at all,
- 19:35Speaker 4: and it just showed up one day and like unroll
- 19:38Speaker 4: it and everything. I was like, holy hell, that's a real.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Deal he sent me. I don't know if you guys
- 19:46Speaker 2: remember if you've seen Mutilator two, but there's a scene
- 19:51Speaker 2: where a where a guy gets like a spear or
- 19:54Speaker 2: something through his mouth. It goes like up his button
- 19:58Speaker 2: out of his mouth. Buddy emailed me one day and
- 20:01Speaker 2: he was like, hey, I've got something for you. Uh
- 20:04Speaker 2: confirm your at your address for me. And I'm thinking, oh,
- 20:06Speaker 2: he's going to send me a poster or something or
- 20:08Speaker 2: I don't know. You know, he sent me that guy's head.
- 20:14Speaker 2: He yeah, he sent me the the the prop of
- 20:18Speaker 2: that guy's head. So I get I get this huge
- 20:22Speaker 2: box and I'm like, what the it's it's heavy, and
- 20:25Speaker 2: I'm like, what the hell could he have put in here?
- 20:29Speaker 2: And I get it home and I open it up
- 20:31Speaker 2: and that guy's staring at me. It's got like it's
- 20:34Speaker 2: got like teeth in it, it's got hair punched in it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I was like, what in the hell, you know, like,
- 20:44Speaker 2: what am I gonna? What am I supposed to do it? Like,
- 20:46Speaker 2: I like, I appreciate it, but like what am I
- 20:48Speaker 2: going to do with this thing? And it feels really
- 20:51Speaker 2: weird too, Like I just touching it. It's like, oh,
- 20:55Speaker 2: but yeah, that was I thought that was. I was like, Okay, cool,
- 21:00Speaker 2: thanks buddy.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Oh my god, that's incredible, dude.
- 21:04Speaker 5: I would have I don't know what I would have
- 21:06Speaker 5: done getting something like that from somebody. It's amazing when
- 21:09Speaker 5: you you know, like we're just who are we really? Like,
- 21:12Speaker 5: We're just We're just a couple of podcast movie guys.
- 21:15Speaker 5: So to even have somebody reach out and say, hey,
- 21:18Speaker 5: I'm gonna shoot you over some posters means the world.
- 21:21Speaker 5: It's actually hanging the mutilator ones hanging right in front
- 21:25Speaker 5: of me. But that was that was kind of a
- 21:27Speaker 5: moment where I had. I remember hanging.
- 21:31Speaker 6: Up this poster. It was like two days after.
- 21:33Speaker 5: It came in and I was talking to my wife
- 21:36Speaker 5: and I was like, Man, I was like, what a
- 21:37Speaker 5: cool what a cool opportunity. You know, I know a
- 21:40Speaker 5: lot of people do interviews, and you know, everyone's all
- 21:42Speaker 5: over YouTube doing interviews, and it's just really cool when
- 21:45Speaker 5: you have somebody that's that that awesome about it, you
- 21:49Speaker 5: know what I mean, to take time out and to
- 21:52Speaker 5: ship you something and it means the world.
- 21:55Speaker 4: It was so nice. He didn't have to do that.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Buddy, Buddy loves the fans because I
- 22:01Speaker 2: mean we're we're the people who kept the Mutilator alive
- 22:04Speaker 2: for all of these years and you know, begged and
- 22:09Speaker 2: pleaded for a new release, and so I mean he
- 22:13Speaker 2: definitely appreciates that. I've got I've got my Mutilator one
- 22:17Speaker 2: sheet framed on the wall too, with my little check
- 22:21Speaker 2: from Mutilator two tucked in the corner of it. So
- 22:27Speaker 2: but yeah, you know, he loves he loves the fans. Yeah,
- 22:32Speaker 2: he gets it that, Like the the movie wouldn't be
- 22:36Speaker 2: the movie without the fans. You know, we've kept it
- 22:39Speaker 2: alive for all these years and continue to keep it alive. Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 5: That I remember kind of when we were talking about,
- 22:48Speaker 5: you know, hey, we're gonna start interviewing people for the show.
- 22:51Speaker 5: He was very early on. I think he was like
- 22:53Speaker 5: in the first list of people we wanted to reach
- 22:56Speaker 5: out to. And my my favorite part of doing things
- 23:00Speaker 5: like that is, you know, we put out an episode
- 23:04Speaker 5: and there's kind of like, especially in our little community,
- 23:07Speaker 5: there's almost like this little, this tiny little resurgence of
- 23:10Speaker 5: like attention around it. And I remember putting out the
- 23:14Speaker 5: interview with Buddy Cooper and over the course of like
- 23:17Speaker 5: three four days, I got tagged in like five six
- 23:20Speaker 5: photos that were people rewatching the Mutilator and I was like, man,
- 23:24Speaker 5: how cool is this that, like even a couple of
- 23:26Speaker 5: people who picked it up for the first time, I'm like, man,
- 23:28Speaker 5: how cool is this that people are discovering or just
- 23:30Speaker 5: kind of like you have this brief moment where you're like,
- 23:32Speaker 5: I'm going to go back and check this out, and
- 23:35Speaker 5: then I'm gonna take it even further and I'm going
- 23:36Speaker 5: to post it on social media and tell more people
- 23:38Speaker 5: to check it out, which hopefully more people do, and
- 23:40Speaker 5: it just kind of you hope it spreads, and you know,
- 23:44Speaker 5: you always hope that like somebody went on Amazon and
- 23:46Speaker 5: paid the you know, fifteen bucks for the for the
- 23:49Speaker 5: for the Arrow, Blu Ray or whatever they did, and
- 23:52Speaker 5: just continue to spread that. You know for sure, Steve,
- 23:58Speaker 5: you're I know you're a big Frid thirteenth fan. I
- 24:01Speaker 5: know you probably an original VHS there behind you somewhere,
- 24:05Speaker 5: or you got it already lined up.
- 24:07Speaker 4: It came, dude, that came tonight prepared.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That you got Adrian King on there? And who else
- 24:16Speaker 2: have you got on there?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Uh?
- 24:18Speaker 4: I got Claudette the extress play Claudette, Okay, cool? And
- 24:22Speaker 4: then on the back Tom Savini nice. I don't know
- 24:28Speaker 4: why he didn't sign the front, but it's all good.
- 24:31Speaker 2: He was like when I when I had him sign
- 24:34Speaker 2: my poster, he goes, oh, man, he likes to sign
- 24:37Speaker 2: on the knife, but Sean Cunningham had beat him to
- 24:41Speaker 2: it and he'd sign the knife. So he was like,
- 24:44Speaker 2: ah something. He's like, ah, somebody Sean signed the knife
- 24:47Speaker 2: like I. He kind of acted like he didn't want
- 24:50Speaker 2: to sign it.
- 24:51Speaker 4: At that point, like where do we go from here?
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah? Like if I can't get the knife that I
- 24:57Speaker 2: don't I don't even want to sign the thing. So uh,
- 24:59Speaker 2: he's kind it down at the bottom. But as soon
- 25:01Speaker 2: as he saw it, like he went straight for the knife.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I was like, ah, somebody beat me to.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Then, just utter disappointment, complete disappointment.
- 25:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I love. I just want to say I love
- 25:12Speaker 5: the paramount, the white sides.
- 25:16Speaker 6: Oh, the spine, the spine, the white spines.
- 25:18Speaker 5: I love that.
- 25:20Speaker 4: This is I mean, you look at it whether it's
- 25:23Speaker 4: on the post or the VHS, but like the cover art,
- 25:26Speaker 4: it's just so iconic. There's something about it that just
- 25:30Speaker 4: it still gives me chills to this day looking at
- 25:32Speaker 4: it all these years later. But I remember my first
- 25:35Speaker 4: exposure was picking them up just kind of like out
- 25:38Speaker 4: of order at the video store. I got in on VHS,
- 25:41Speaker 4: and it wasn't till I believe when I started like
- 25:44Speaker 4: actually collecting like that, the the set of like the
- 25:48Speaker 4: lenticular covers for the DVDs. So I went through and
- 25:51Speaker 4: I bought every single one of them, and then I
- 25:54Speaker 4: was able to go back and like actually watch them
- 25:56Speaker 4: in order and appreciate him. But it is such a
- 26:00Speaker 4: fun experience. I mean that was like really back when
- 26:03Speaker 4: I was first getting into horror like that, especially with Slashers,
- 26:07Speaker 4: and it was just so different than a lot of
- 26:09Speaker 4: the other Slashers I had seen, you know, especially just
- 26:12Speaker 4: given you know the first movie, I guess in hindsights,
- 26:17Speaker 4: just it's so different than what you're expecting, and it's
- 26:19Speaker 4: just so heavy on the atmosphere. That's why I absolutely
- 26:22Speaker 4: love about it so much.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Yeah, well this first movie is much more of a
- 26:27Speaker 5: obviously it's a slasher, but it's a really good kind
- 26:30Speaker 5: of like mystery, like a whodunler, you know. And at
- 26:34Speaker 5: this time around watching it today, I love the moment.
- 26:39Speaker 5: And obviously I've seen this movie a million times, but
- 26:42Speaker 5: every time I rewatch it, you pick up on something new,
- 26:45Speaker 5: depending on how much you're paying attention. I love the
- 26:48Speaker 5: moment that the storm begins rolling in and you have
- 26:52Speaker 5: a moment with you have that that very brief moment
- 26:55Speaker 5: with Marcy and Kevin Bacon and or Jack and you
- 27:01Speaker 5: know they have the lightning flash on them. And then
- 27:03Speaker 5: it cuts to a couple of these beautiful shots of
- 27:07Speaker 5: like a storm rolling in, and it starts with like
- 27:09Speaker 5: stunning It's like the shot of a tree blowing in
- 27:11Speaker 5: the wind. And then it cuts to a wide shot
- 27:13Speaker 5: where you kind of see the water getting rough and
- 27:16Speaker 5: the boats are rocking at the dock, and that feels
- 27:20Speaker 5: like such an artistic shift for the movie because this
- 27:23Speaker 5: is really when things are going to start. You know,
- 27:27Speaker 5: you're heading to Jack's death and this is things are
- 27:30Speaker 5: really gonna start rolling. I love the rainy atmosphere. There's
- 27:34Speaker 5: so much about this movie from a from a atmosphere
- 27:38Speaker 5: point that I've I've come to love much more than
- 27:41Speaker 5: the sequels, like the when when you think about Friday
- 27:44Speaker 5: the Thirteenth, it this this wasn't like a lot of
- 27:52Speaker 5: this stuff wasn't established. A lot of these rules. Right.
- 27:55Speaker 5: You have Halloween, which comes along two years earlier and injured,
- 28:00Speaker 5: uses a lot of these kind of newer elements, brings
- 28:03Speaker 5: them more into the mainstream. The PUV, the slasher element. Okay,
- 28:07Speaker 5: we're gonna have you know, people killed off in a
- 28:10Speaker 5: certain order, one by one by one. Friday the Thirteenth
- 28:14Speaker 5: exploits that and takes it to the next extreme and
- 28:18Speaker 5: is more focused on delivering you know, euey guey kills
- 28:23Speaker 5: and really capitalizing on those simpler aspects. So artistically, though,
- 28:30Speaker 5: I feel like there was true talent and true intent
- 28:33Speaker 5: on trying to make a movie that was going to
- 28:37Speaker 5: stay with you and really built a mood m M,
- 28:43Speaker 5: something I've I've only picked up on the last couple
- 28:45Speaker 5: of watches. To be honest with you, I don't know why.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree, I think, And like part of
- 28:52Speaker 2: the marketing of that movie was like, come and watch
- 28:55Speaker 2: all these brutal deaths. That was like part of the
- 28:59Speaker 2: marketing of the too, So I think, and you know,
- 29:02Speaker 2: Savini's effects are so good in that one that I
- 29:10Speaker 2: think there's a lot of factors that that that force
- 29:14Speaker 2: that make people kind of overlook how well made it is,
- 29:18Speaker 2: how good it is. But yeah, like the the marketing
- 29:27Speaker 2: for that one was, I mean, it was brilliant, but
- 29:30Speaker 2: it kind of undercut how how good the movie is. Really.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Yeah, well years removed. I do feel like in the
- 29:46Speaker 5: cycle that we're constantly in where people are going back
- 29:48Speaker 5: and revisiting movies and they're kind of having the reappraisal,
- 29:52Speaker 5: I feel like most of the sequels have gone through
- 29:56Speaker 5: that phase now, but for some reason, the first one
- 29:59Speaker 5: still has a it still feels like, I don't know,
- 30:04Speaker 5: it's odd, it's odd that the first movie just hasn't
- 30:06Speaker 5: had that kind of resurfacing or that that hey, let's
- 30:11Speaker 5: let's revisit this, let's let's let's look at this in
- 30:13Speaker 5: a new light. Yet people are doing that to Part
- 30:16Speaker 5: six and Part five and Part eight, and it feels
- 30:19Speaker 5: like they're all getting it except the first one.
- 30:22Speaker 2: That's true. Yeah, that's that's an interesting point. I think,
- 30:24Speaker 2: you know, for a long time, like Part five was
- 30:27Speaker 2: the Black Sheep, and then slowly but surely people started
- 30:30Speaker 2: to come around on that one, and now people love
- 30:32Speaker 2: Part five. Same thing with you know, Jason goes to Hell,
- 30:35Speaker 2: Like for a long time, Yeah, I just hated Jason
- 30:38Speaker 2: goes to Hell. And then you know, here over the
- 30:41Speaker 2: past few years, there's been such a turnaround on that one.
- 30:45Speaker 2: But yeah, that's a great point. I I And maybe
- 30:51Speaker 2: it's because it's the first that that that people haven't
- 30:56Speaker 2: given it that that kind of you know, reassessment or whatever,
- 31:04Speaker 2: or maybe it's because I don't know, it's it's it's
- 31:07Speaker 2: I don't know. That's that's interesting.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Do you guys think of it as like maybe it's
- 31:11Speaker 4: like partly in due to the pacing, because it definitely
- 31:14Speaker 4: feels like, you know, it's a little bit more more
- 31:18Speaker 4: of a slow burn compared to some of the other
- 31:20Speaker 4: Friday the Thirteenth movies. I feel like that maybe, you know,
- 31:24Speaker 4: if you're just straight up expecting, you know, Jason to
- 31:26Speaker 4: make an appearance or things to move a little bit quicker.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Like I feel like the sequels are like, I don't know,
- 31:33Speaker 4: might might end up being disappointed.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Then in that case, it definitely has a very deliberate pace,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and like Chris was saying, like once the storm rolls in,
- 31:44Speaker 2: that's when you know, lack of crap, you know things
- 31:47Speaker 2: are gonna, things are gonna, things are about to get dicey.
- 31:52Speaker 2: But maybe it's because, like nobody the original one is
- 31:56Speaker 2: kind of it gets lost in the shuffle. I never
- 32:00Speaker 2: hear anybody say they hate it, but I very seldom
- 32:03Speaker 2: hear anybody say they love it. It's just kind of in
- 32:06Speaker 2: the middle of that pack. So I think it just
- 32:10Speaker 2: kind of gets lost in the shuffle.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Maybe well, I think too thinking about it now.
- 32:16Speaker 5: So I when I was watching it earlier, I made
- 32:19Speaker 5: note that the Annie death happens at twenty two minutes in.
- 32:23Speaker 5: I was curious, I was curious how how much this
- 32:26Speaker 5: movie sticks to like a standard three act structure, which
- 32:30Speaker 5: is like your first inciting incident would typically have it
- 32:32Speaker 5: about thirty minutes in. So that Annie kill happens at
- 32:35Speaker 5: twenty two minutes in and you know, you have the
- 32:38Speaker 5: opening kill, which is your first you know, let's say
- 32:41Speaker 5: three four minutes of the movie. And then then you
- 32:44Speaker 5: have the what I think is actually like wonderful build up,
- 32:47Speaker 5: which is Annie coming into town, getting the looks, looking
- 32:50Speaker 5: for the camp. You know, her moment with the truck driver,
- 32:53Speaker 5: which I think is such a great moment because she
- 32:56Speaker 5: is a badass standing up to him, she takes none
- 32:59Speaker 5: of his shit.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I think you almost I think you almost expect her
- 33:03Speaker 2: to be kind of the final girl. Yeah, so I
- 33:06Speaker 2: think that, Yeah, that's I think it. I think it's
- 33:08Speaker 2: a great build up because you get to see the town,
- 33:12Speaker 2: you get to see some of the townies, you get
- 33:15Speaker 2: to spend some time with her, and you see, oh,
- 33:17Speaker 2: well she's an animal lover, and oh she wants to
- 33:19Speaker 2: work with kids, and she's just this sweet She's just
- 33:23Speaker 2: this sweet girl. This this must be our final girl
- 33:25Speaker 2: here on her way to camp. And then, oh, I
- 33:28Speaker 2: guess not. So I think I think all that is.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I think all that is brilliant really because you've you've
- 33:35Speaker 2: established the place where the movie takes for the setting,
- 33:39Speaker 2: the location, You've established the towns, You've established that something
- 33:43Speaker 2: happened at the camp years ago through Crazy Rauth, and
- 33:49Speaker 2: that all the townfolk kind of know about it because
- 33:51Speaker 2: when she says, you know, I'm going out to Crystal Lake,
- 33:53Speaker 2: everybody in the diners like, oh, so you've established all
- 33:58Speaker 2: that really effortlessly, and you've established her and then you
- 34:04Speaker 2: kill her really brutally. It's like, oh wow, you know. Yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 2: So I think all that is really really exceptionally well
- 34:13Speaker 2: done for a slasher movie.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I love that it creates like some misdirection. I guess
- 34:18Speaker 4: if you're only basing it solely on the first film,
- 34:21Speaker 4: I mean, you really don't know really up until towards
- 34:23Speaker 4: the end, who the killer is gonna end up being.
- 34:27Speaker 4: But yeah, I agree with what you guys are saying,
- 34:30Speaker 4: but definitely that way.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Also, I mean, I want to make note Crazy Ralph
- 34:36Speaker 5: is an incredible character, such a great minor character that
- 34:43Speaker 5: really influenced so many characters that are sort of like
- 34:48Speaker 5: I don't want to call them red herrings, but sort
- 34:50Speaker 5: of setups for the potential for the incidents that are
- 34:54Speaker 5: coming in. But also Alice, who ends up being our
- 34:58Speaker 5: final Girl, doesn't play into really any of the final
- 35:03Speaker 5: Girl tropes that we know now.
- 35:06Speaker 6: She is seen smoking weed at the party.
- 35:09Speaker 5: She clearly there's many references to her sleeping with Steve Christy,
- 35:15Speaker 5: so we know she's not a virgin. You know, she
- 35:18Speaker 5: plays against all of those types, and I do feel
- 35:20Speaker 5: like people kind of forget that because Friday that thirteen
- 35:23Speaker 5: still gets listed as one of those prominent examples of like, oh,
- 35:28Speaker 5: here is why we have this template for the final girl.
- 35:31Speaker 5: But she doesn't play into any of that really, and
- 35:36Speaker 5: there's nothing about her, you know, when the rest of
- 35:39Speaker 5: the kids show up at the camp and we're introduced
- 35:41Speaker 5: to Steve and we're introduced to Alice, there's really nothing
- 35:44Speaker 5: about her that that gives us any sort of notion
- 35:47Speaker 5: that she could be our final girl. Right, it could
- 35:51Speaker 5: be anybody at that point, and I mean all of
- 35:54Speaker 5: the characters are have something that that like I could think, like, y,
- 36:01Speaker 5: if this could become the final girl. This could become
- 36:03Speaker 5: the final girl, you know, whether or not we see
- 36:05Speaker 5: them commit these acts or not.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Well, and you have to keep in mind like in
- 36:10Speaker 2: nineteen eighty they really like the all of these rules
- 36:16Speaker 2: and stuff really hadn't been established, you know, like Halloween
- 36:20Speaker 2: was definitely the template for Friday the thirteenth, but like
- 36:24Speaker 2: it was really Friday the thirteenth, that series that established
- 36:28Speaker 2: a lot of these rules, like sex equals death, and
- 36:31Speaker 2: you know, drugs equal death, and you know what I mean,
- 36:34Speaker 2: the final girl has to be virginal and this and
- 36:36Speaker 2: that and like you know, never say I'll be right
- 36:40Speaker 2: back or you know that sort of stuff like Friday
- 36:44Speaker 2: the thirteenth really established a lot of those rules. So yeah,
- 36:52Speaker 2: and that's keep in mind too, Like there's a good
- 36:56Speaker 2: chunk of the movie where Alice is asleep, Like the
- 36:58Speaker 2: only reason she didn't die is because she was sleeping
- 37:01Speaker 2: in the cabin while everybody else was dying. You know,
- 37:04Speaker 2: missus Voori's like might have peeked in on her through
- 37:06Speaker 2: the window and went, ah, she's asleep, I'll get her later.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Let me go get this one guy at the the
- 37:11Speaker 2: you know, let me let me take care of them first,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and I'll come back and get her.
- 37:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So yeah, the rules didn't really I don't think the
- 37:20Speaker 2: rules necessarily applied to Friday the thirteenth. I think that
- 37:25Speaker 2: they were still kind of creating the rules. But that's
- 37:28Speaker 2: what's interesting about watching it now is that you can
- 37:30Speaker 2: pick out, like, oh, well, you think Annie's going to
- 37:33Speaker 2: be the final girl. No, and then you know, you
- 37:36Speaker 2: see Alice and like you said, the first time you
- 37:37Speaker 2: see her, you see that like, oh, well, she's she's
- 37:39Speaker 2: sleeping with Steve Christie and you know there's some there's
- 37:43Speaker 2: something there. She's she's she's a little more complex than
- 37:46Speaker 2: you'd think because she's got some kind of issues. She's
- 37:48Speaker 2: going to have to leave and she's not really she's
- 37:50Speaker 2: sleeping with the guy, but she doesn't really like him
- 37:52Speaker 2: that much, you can tell. So yeah, I think people
- 37:58Speaker 2: watching it today for the first time, not knowing anything
- 38:02Speaker 2: would would kind of be off. Yeah, it would put
- 38:08Speaker 2: them off a little bit.
- 38:09Speaker 4: I think, yeah, for sure.
- 38:11Speaker 5: And I think a lot of times too, especially the
- 38:14Speaker 5: first sequel, like you look at Friday thirteenth. Friday thirteenth
- 38:18Speaker 5: Part two took the foundation of Friday thirteenth lad and
- 38:22Speaker 5: expanded on it, and probably Friday the thirteenth Part two
- 38:25Speaker 5: was probably more responsible for the formula to come because
- 38:29Speaker 5: it really fell into like, Okay, we need to make
- 38:33Speaker 5: this bigger, or we need to make the you know,
- 38:35Speaker 5: the kills need to be bigger. We're going to have
- 38:37Speaker 5: a well established final girl, like we're going to build
- 38:40Speaker 5: on top of these and same thing with like talk
- 38:44Speaker 5: about a modern franchise. For an example, people look at
- 38:47Speaker 5: Saw and it's like, there's not a lot about Saw
- 38:51Speaker 5: that that became a franchise staple. It was more what
- 38:53Speaker 5: Darren Lin Buzman did with Saul two that established where
- 38:57Speaker 5: the franchise would go. Right. Friday Thirteenth Part two plays
- 39:01Speaker 5: more role in the kind of what we've come to
- 39:05Speaker 5: know that formula. But this first movie I think is
- 39:11Speaker 5: really really ripe for kind of a little bit of
- 39:15Speaker 5: a I mean, I hate to be the one to
- 39:16Speaker 5: say it, but like.
- 39:16Speaker 4: A re resurgence.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Yeah, because it's pretty genius. I mean, Sean sewn S
- 39:24Speaker 5: Cunningham comes from you know, he produced and and did
- 39:28Speaker 5: Last Alis on the Left with with Wes Craven, which
- 39:31Speaker 5: I have a poster of sitting in front of me
- 39:34Speaker 5: right now. It's one of like.
- 39:36Speaker 6: A movie that I that I love very very much.
- 39:39Speaker 5: And you know, he did a couple of a couple
- 39:42Speaker 5: of porn films and you know, a couple of children's movies,
- 39:46Speaker 5: and a lot of people don't know that Friday the
- 39:48Speaker 5: thirteen started as a poster essentially created a poster and
- 39:54Speaker 5: they're like, Okay, well, we can if we can sell
- 39:57Speaker 5: this and we can make money, and we can basically
- 40:00Speaker 5: rip off Halloween and just through that timing and right time,
- 40:07Speaker 5: right place, right decade, right area, you have Tom Savini
- 40:11Speaker 5: coming in and doing phenomenal work. I mean all throughout
- 40:17Speaker 5: this movie, just incredible work that he would only build
- 40:20Speaker 5: upon because I always joke that Friday thirteenth, you know,
- 40:24Speaker 5: he did frid thirteenth, and then the Burning was like, oh,
- 40:26Speaker 5: here's me taking what I did there, and I'm stepping
- 40:29Speaker 5: it up to the next level. And while the Burning
- 40:33Speaker 5: I think is excellent and his effects are excellent, the
- 40:36Speaker 5: kills and Friday thirteen stick with me more than most
- 40:39Speaker 5: kills from the burning, aside from the raft scene from
- 40:42Speaker 5: the burning that is still my favorite and most disturbing
- 40:45Speaker 5: kill scene of all time.
- 40:47Speaker 4: But you have to add, so, do you guys consider
- 40:50Speaker 4: this one of his best films that he worked on
- 40:53Speaker 4: per effects?
- 40:57Speaker 2: I think when it comes to like realistic looking effects
- 41:03Speaker 2: or like especially for that time, like shocking effects, Yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 2: I would say so. I would say it's definitely up there.
- 41:12Speaker 6: I think Day of the Dead is like his masterpiece.
- 41:15Speaker 2: The Day of the Dead is his masterpiece for sure.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I mean, he's done so much incredible work, but I
- 41:21Speaker 2: think Day would definitely be his masterpiece of Friday would
- 41:25Speaker 2: be I think it would probably be somewhere in the
- 41:28Speaker 2: top five. Maybe, Yeah, I think I think That's one
- 41:34Speaker 2: thing that definitely gets lost on people too, is like
- 41:39Speaker 2: you mentioned, you know, Sean Cunningham wanted to He didn't
- 41:45Speaker 2: want to make horror movies. He had greater you know, aspirations,
- 41:50Speaker 2: and Friday the thirteenth was just something. You know, Halloween
- 41:54Speaker 2: was a big hit, so let's do this and maybe
- 41:56Speaker 2: we can sell it, make a few bucks and keep
- 41:58Speaker 2: the lights on. And like that's another he could have
- 42:03Speaker 2: He could have shot that completely flat. He could have
- 42:07Speaker 2: been like, I don't care about the atmosphere. Let's just
- 42:09Speaker 2: get some kills in here, let's get some boobies in here,
- 42:13Speaker 2: and let's just get it done so that we can
- 42:16Speaker 2: sell it and make a buck and I can try
- 42:18Speaker 2: and make my you know, my kids movies and those
- 42:22Speaker 2: that that's what's gonna put me on the map, or
- 42:25Speaker 2: my dramatic stuff will put me on the map. So,
- 42:28Speaker 2: I mean, he could have just phoned it into and
- 42:30Speaker 2: he didn't. You know, he still made a really well
- 42:34Speaker 2: done film that, of course, you know, will be etched
- 42:40Speaker 2: on his tombstone. That's forever what he'll be known for.
- 42:44Speaker 2: But there was no intention of it being like a
- 42:47Speaker 2: big hit, There was no intention of it taken off.
- 42:50Speaker 2: It was just hopefully we can sell this and keep
- 42:55Speaker 2: the lights on.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Yeah, And sometimes I think it's just even even when
- 43:03Speaker 5: you don't try, if you if you are creative and
- 43:06Speaker 5: you're an artistic person, you know you you just end
- 43:10Speaker 5: up it comes out in a way that that that
- 43:14Speaker 5: perfectly expresses, you know, your intent. I think there are
- 43:18Speaker 5: movies that try too hard to really be cinematic, you know.
- 43:24Speaker 5: I think we do see that a lot of times,
- 43:26Speaker 5: where it's like, you know, they're trying too hard to
- 43:29Speaker 5: be this thing that they're not. And Friday thirteenth doesn't
- 43:32Speaker 5: feel like it's a It doesn't feel like it's simply
- 43:35Speaker 5: trying to like write on the coattails of Halloween. And
- 43:41Speaker 5: it doesn't feel pieced together or thrown together. This feels
- 43:46Speaker 5: fully fleshed out and fully thought out in a way
- 43:51Speaker 5: that's actually pretty stunning when you hear what you mentioned,
- 43:54Speaker 5: which is how like that the real intent of cobbling
- 43:58Speaker 5: this thing together like they did it's it's it's pretty
- 44:01Speaker 5: amazing because the movie is super well shot, it looks great,
- 44:04Speaker 5: it does not look like a low budget movie whatsoever,
- 44:09Speaker 5: which it was at the time, and the influence is
- 44:14Speaker 5: is out of control. I mean, even the writing, like
- 44:16Speaker 5: Victor Miller's writing of Missus Voorhees is phenomenal. There's there's
- 44:23Speaker 5: not a single character here that that I hate outside
- 44:26Speaker 5: of the cop that's it, you know, there there's a
- 44:33Speaker 5: there's there's so much about this movie that feels so intentional.
- 44:37Speaker 5: And they listen to interviews and they're like, it's amazing.
- 44:40Speaker 5: We even got fully finished images to imprint on film.
- 44:44Speaker 6: Like they're like, we didn't even know what we were doing.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well, they a funny story about
- 44:52Speaker 2: the camp. They they weren't even looking for that camp.
- 44:56Speaker 2: They were looking for a different camp in that area,
- 44:59Speaker 2: and they just pulled into that one. Yeah, And because
- 45:03Speaker 2: it was like in the off season, they were like, like,
- 45:05Speaker 2: you want to shoot here? Sure, I guess you know,
- 45:07Speaker 2: you you pay us, okay, So like they they literally
- 45:12Speaker 2: just showed up at a camp thinking it was you know,
- 45:16Speaker 2: they showed up at the wrong camp. So they yeah,
- 45:18Speaker 2: that's I think that's kind of a that's kind of funny.
- 45:21Speaker 4: It's it's wild though, because I couldn't picture it film
- 45:26Speaker 4: or being filmed in any other location now, because I
- 45:28Speaker 4: feel like that that like setting, that specific camp just
- 45:31Speaker 4: feels so iconic for this film.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Oh it is, Yeah, for sure, dude, were you guys
- 45:36Speaker 5: summer camp people? Because I've never I've never done the.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Whole I never went to a summer long summer camp.
- 45:44Speaker 2: I went to like weekend things functions at like the
- 45:49Speaker 2: four h Camp in my hometown, but never like the
- 45:52Speaker 2: full summer kind of vibe.
- 45:54Speaker 5: Yeah, it's funny looking back or like watching now, because
- 45:57Speaker 5: I'm like, I wonder if I was a twenty one
- 45:59Speaker 5: year old adult, if I would become a camp counselor.
- 46:01Speaker 5: But I can't stand kids, man, I wonder.
- 46:04Speaker 4: Chris, it's not too late, man.
- 46:08Speaker 5: I was thinking about it too when I when I
- 46:10Speaker 5: was watching Uh with my wife the Black Phone too recently,
- 46:13Speaker 5: I was like, oh, man, I don't know how it
- 46:16Speaker 5: feel going to camp to make some extra money. I
- 46:19Speaker 5: don't know, man, maybe maybe if I lived in a
- 46:21Speaker 5: world where I didn't love horror movies and I didn't
- 46:23Speaker 5: have like these uh, these moments where I fear like
- 46:27Speaker 5: the door's always open, somebody can just walk right in
- 46:30Speaker 5: off the street.
- 46:30Speaker 4: And the isolation.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah out here, and.
- 46:35Speaker 2: I heard it. I heard a noise off in the woods.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I better go, I better go check it out.
- 46:43Speaker 5: That's the untrained, you know, the the untrained person. And
- 46:47Speaker 5: me as a horror fan, there's times in my life
- 46:50Speaker 5: now where you hear a little noise and you're like, yeah,
- 46:52Speaker 5: there's no fucking way, I know there's something over there
- 46:54Speaker 5: and better.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Off of hard pass.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Yeah there's something happening outside, but I ain't checking out
- 47:00Speaker 2: out screw that.
- 47:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 3: No.
- 47:03Speaker 4: So for Friday the thirteenth for both of you guys,
- 47:06Speaker 4: was this early on when you guys were getting into
- 47:08Speaker 4: horror that you initially had phoned this film or watched it,
- 47:13Speaker 4: or was it a little bit further into your horror journey.
- 47:18Speaker 2: I mean my horror journey is like in the beginning,
- 47:23Speaker 2: I was very what I could rent was limited, Like
- 47:29Speaker 2: if I went to the video store with mom, if
- 47:32Speaker 2: I wanted to rent something, I had to take the
- 47:34Speaker 2: box to her so she could peruse it and improve
- 47:37Speaker 2: it or deny it. So all of the big franchises
- 47:41Speaker 2: were off limits, including Friday the thirteenth. So a lot
- 47:48Speaker 2: of the stuff that I watched was like the Lost Boys.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Lost Boys was okay. I'm pretty sure, like the first
- 47:58Speaker 2: Halloween was okay because like for my mother's generation, Halloween
- 48:06Speaker 2: was like, you know, scream for you know, Pristige or
- 48:11Speaker 2: whatever exactly. Yeah, So that one was okay. Halloween two
- 48:17Speaker 2: was okay. So it wasn't until Part seven came out
- 48:22Speaker 2: on VHS that I was able. That was the first
- 48:26Speaker 2: one I saw because my stepdad came home with it
- 48:29Speaker 2: and he was like, let the kid watch it. He
- 48:31Speaker 2: wants to watch it. Let him watch It's just a movie,
- 48:33Speaker 2: a good guy.
- 48:34Speaker 6: Yeah, He's like, it's just it's basically Carrie.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Carrie versus Jason. But I just remember him
- 48:42Speaker 2: saying like, let the kid watch it. He wants to
- 48:44Speaker 2: watch it, let him watch it. And she kind of,
- 48:47Speaker 2: you know, wildly objected and said okay, whatever, and that
- 48:52Speaker 2: opened the floodgates from there. From that point, pretty much
- 48:56Speaker 2: everything aside from Texas Chainsaw Massacre was fair game.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Pro Texas Chainsaw. Was it the name that.
- 49:06Speaker 2: They think it was? Kept it? I think I think
- 49:08Speaker 2: it was the name. I can't remember her telling me,
- 49:10Speaker 2: I'm not gonna let you watch a movie about people
- 49:12Speaker 2: being cut up with a chainsaw. So it wasn't until
- 49:17Speaker 2: I was probably early teens before I finally rented Chainsaw.
- 49:24Speaker 5: It feels so scattered to me because so I was
- 49:28Speaker 5: born in ninety one I watched I remember the Exorcist
- 49:34Speaker 5: was the one that really pushed it over my mom.
- 49:37Speaker 5: I feel like my mom was kind of into like
- 49:41Speaker 5: just destroying our lives at that time, because she was like, yeah,
- 49:44Speaker 5: I think you'll love this movie. And it was like
- 49:47Speaker 5: I was like eight when I when I watched that,
- 49:49Speaker 5: and of course it was the version you've never seen before,
- 49:52Speaker 5: So I had the famous spider walk down the stairs okay,
- 49:56Speaker 5: and couldn't even look at I couldn't even look at
- 49:59Speaker 5: her face for the longest time because it scared me.
- 50:02Speaker 5: But coming up at that time was really interesting because
- 50:06Speaker 5: I remember being like nine and at a friend's house
- 50:10Speaker 5: and we had watched the Blair Witch Projects and at
- 50:14Speaker 5: that time it was like whoa this? And I remember
- 50:17Speaker 5: he had the VHS but it didn't have the you know,
- 50:23Speaker 5: the slip the sleeve over it, and I was like, man,
- 50:26Speaker 5: did you like find this in the woods? Like where
- 50:28Speaker 5: the hell did this thing come from? And kind of
- 50:31Speaker 5: the start of the computer era, So there was so
- 50:33Speaker 5: much stuff that I that I saw just from whatever,
- 50:37Speaker 5: perusing inappropriate areas of the Internet that like, sometimes still
- 50:42Speaker 5: I come across clips I'm like, we have seen this before.
- 50:44Speaker 5: I probably watched this on some website. They gave my
- 50:47Speaker 5: mom's computer a virus when I was eleven years old,
- 50:53Speaker 5: and Friday the thirteenth was sort of I guess, I
- 50:55Speaker 5: want to say I was probably like thirteen, and it
- 51:01Speaker 5: actually started with Jason X was the first one that
- 51:06Speaker 5: I had. I remember watching, and there was something about
- 51:12Speaker 5: that movie. That movie is so sanitized in ways that
- 51:16Speaker 5: I feel like my mom was kind of didn't really care, just.
- 51:19Speaker 6: Like, oh, that movie's just pull that movie's just full.
- 51:21Speaker 5: Of bad cgi blood. You can watch that. And uh
- 51:26Speaker 5: so we watched that. And then at some point I
- 51:29Speaker 5: actually saw Jason Goes to Hell before the first one
- 51:32Speaker 5: as well, and at some point I'm trying to remember, Man, it.
- 51:35Speaker 4: All feels so I feel like they'd be so jarring
- 51:38Speaker 4: to go back and then watch the original. Yeah.
- 51:41Speaker 5: Well, but to be honest, though, I always I've probably
- 51:47Speaker 5: seen most of the sequels more times total than I've
- 51:51Speaker 5: seen the original Friday the thirteenth, and you know, my
- 51:55Speaker 5: wife and I watched it. I usually watch it kind
- 51:59Speaker 5: of like in the spring, because even though you can
- 52:03Speaker 5: clearly tell it was fall when they were shooting it,
- 52:06Speaker 5: especially if you're in New Jersey and you know what
- 52:08Speaker 5: the changing of the seasons looks like, you can see
- 52:11Speaker 5: that they were not shooting this in the spring. But
- 52:15Speaker 5: this was such a spring movie for me, and I
- 52:18Speaker 5: remember watching it all the time and just I don't know,
- 52:20Speaker 5: it always felt like I could put it on and
- 52:22Speaker 5: not really pay attention. Remember the last probably five or
- 52:26Speaker 5: six years that I've been paying a lot more attention
- 52:29Speaker 5: to movies, it's sort of taken up a little bit
- 52:33Speaker 5: of a different a different place for me. And I
- 52:37Speaker 5: think the same goes for a lot of movies around
- 52:39Speaker 5: that time that I watched. I remember being just fucking
- 52:42Speaker 5: terrified of The Ring, you know, the the what's his
- 52:47Speaker 5: name remade it? What's that director's name? Yeah, Gorverbinski, Yep, Yeah,
- 52:56Speaker 5: The Ring scared the hell out of me. I actually remember.
- 53:02Speaker 2: So.
- 53:02Speaker 5: Final Destination was always like one of my mom's favorites,
- 53:05Speaker 5: and we were allowed to watch that, and I think
- 53:08Speaker 5: i've talked about it on the show before or on
- 53:09Speaker 5: another podcast that that was a guest on I talked
- 53:12Speaker 5: about it. But Final Destination two had a bonus feature.
- 53:17Speaker 5: It was like a mini documentary about forty minutes long.
- 53:20Speaker 5: It was called Bringing Death to Life, and it was
- 53:22Speaker 5: behind the scenes of all of the kill scenes in
- 53:25Speaker 5: the movie, and the first half of it was sort
- 53:29Speaker 5: of like a history of Gore documentary where that's how
- 53:34Speaker 5: it was introduced to Hershel Gordon Lewis and I remember
- 53:38Speaker 5: finding a lot of movies because of that a little
- 53:42Speaker 5: twenty minute intro to at documentary, and one of them
- 53:46Speaker 5: is Jack Shoulders Alone in the Dark, because there was
- 53:49Speaker 5: always a brief clip that they showed of somebody in
- 53:52Speaker 5: what looked like a Jason mask using a three pronged
- 53:57Speaker 5: you know, like gardening tool to rip out someone's throat,
- 54:00Speaker 5: and I was like, I remember at one point in
- 54:03Speaker 5: my life thinking that that was from that movie Bloody
- 54:07Speaker 5: Murder because it's the same it's the same mask. And
- 54:11Speaker 5: then I watched those and I was like, well, this
- 54:12Speaker 5: is not that that movie, and then blindly buying Alone
- 54:17Speaker 5: in the Dark one time, probably like ten fifteen years ago,
- 54:20Speaker 5: and I was like there's that there's that scene. It's
- 54:23Speaker 5: a scene in the parking lot when he comes out
- 54:25Speaker 5: and you know, kills the guy. I think it's like
- 54:27Speaker 5: a three pronged, you know thing for gardening. It's just
- 54:31Speaker 5: funny how how we remember that stuff and how it
- 54:34Speaker 5: comes back. Oh yeah, it's weird. And now I'm like
- 54:40Speaker 5: thinking about it, I'm like, man, what else have I
- 54:43Speaker 5: come across that I don't remember watching or that I
- 54:46Speaker 5: remember watching. It's funny, dude, Friday the thirteenth, I remember
- 54:52Speaker 5: I remember the the opening, watching the opening scene. If
- 54:58Speaker 5: there must have been a couple of times it started
- 55:00Speaker 5: watching this, like maybe me and my brothers who I
- 55:03Speaker 5: was the oldest, so I was I was a bad influence.
- 55:06Speaker 5: I remember watching this opening scene a couple of times,
- 55:09Speaker 5: and maybe we didn't finish it, like maybe we turned
- 55:12Speaker 5: it off or like we got caught or something, or
- 55:15Speaker 5: maybe like we got bored because there was like twenty
- 55:17Speaker 5: more minutes of nothing happening and we were like watching this.
- 55:20Speaker 5: You know, maybe, but who knows.
- 55:24Speaker 4: It definitely takes us time building it up. I mean,
- 55:26Speaker 4: do you guys for this movie? Do you guys feel
- 55:29Speaker 4: when you go back and rewatch it does it feel
- 55:31Speaker 4: like more of like a comfort watch when you go
- 55:33Speaker 4: and watch it again.
- 55:35Speaker 2: M M. All of the all of them feel like
- 55:40Speaker 2: that comfort watches to me, especially especially the first the
- 55:45Speaker 2: first eight are definitely and Jason goes to Hell to
- 55:49Speaker 2: a certain extent too, but definitely those first dight those
- 55:53Speaker 2: are the ones I grew up with. Those are the
- 55:54Speaker 2: ones that I know by heart. I mean, those are
- 55:58Speaker 2: the ones I love today. So anytime I put one
- 56:01Speaker 2: of those on, it's just it's a complete comfort watch.
- 56:05Speaker 4: I was gonna mention and Chris, I know you had
- 56:08Speaker 4: brought this up earlier, but before the storm rolls in,
- 56:12Speaker 4: obviously at Camp Crystal Lake, it feels very peaceful, more
- 56:17Speaker 4: of the ambient feel before everything kind of goes off
- 56:20Speaker 4: the rails. Do you feel like that initial time that
- 56:25Speaker 4: we get before the storm is pretty important for kind
- 56:29Speaker 4: of laying everything out, I guess for the direction of
- 56:32Speaker 4: where the rest of the movie ends up going.
- 56:35Speaker 5: I think it's the It's the contrast because YEA, so
- 56:44Speaker 5: growing up in New Jersey, growing up in a place
- 56:47Speaker 5: where it was very like heavily wooded, and we had lakes,
- 56:50Speaker 5: and you know, we had summer camps around us, and
- 56:52Speaker 5: this is more north. This was this is about two
- 56:56Speaker 5: and a half hours north from where I'm at, kind
- 56:59Speaker 5: of like north northeast from where I'm at. And growing
- 57:05Speaker 5: up playing in the woods and stuff. We always did
- 57:08Speaker 5: it during the day, right Like we would go out
- 57:11Speaker 5: and even my backyard dumped out into these woods and
- 57:13Speaker 5: if you went further, if you went back enough, there
- 57:16Speaker 5: was a creek back there. And we would go back
- 57:18Speaker 5: there during the day. And it's something that I still love,
- 57:21Speaker 5: you know. I used to pay attention to, like how
- 57:23Speaker 5: the sun would shine through the trees and you could
- 57:25Speaker 5: hear the birds, and I used to love it so much. Man,
- 57:28Speaker 5: But anytime we were out there and there was rain
- 57:32Speaker 5: coming we didn't have cell phones, or even when it
- 57:35Speaker 5: started getting dark, the woods almost took on a different
- 57:39Speaker 5: persona like things would change very quickly, and no matter
- 57:44Speaker 5: how familiar were you were with them, they just looked
- 57:48Speaker 5: and felt different. It was almost like, you know, all
- 57:51Speaker 5: of a sudden, a mask was put on over and
- 57:53Speaker 5: suddenly for some reason you were afraid or you felt
- 57:56Speaker 5: fear for whatever reason. And I think five thirteen feels
- 58:03Speaker 5: really good, even like when you see Andie's death in
- 58:05Speaker 5: the woods, it's still like the environment around her is beautiful, right,
- 58:09Speaker 5: you have the great glow of the trees and the
- 58:11Speaker 5: colors are really good, and it almost feels like something
- 58:13Speaker 5: like that shouldn't be happening at that time because it's
- 58:16Speaker 5: so colorful around her and it just looks like a
- 58:18Speaker 5: beautiful day. But when when when that storm rolls in,
- 58:23Speaker 5: you almost get the feeling like something's wrong even before
- 58:26Speaker 5: you before the kill start. It's like this contrast that
- 58:30Speaker 5: that kicks in and gives it that immediate like Okay,
- 58:35Speaker 5: we're in and now this is when it's gonna get bad.
- 58:37Speaker 4: Well, it's like what Pis was saying earlier. It definitely
- 58:40Speaker 4: has like this very evil feel to the camp after
- 58:42Speaker 4: that point, or it just kind of creates a very
- 58:44Speaker 4: claustrophobic feel from that point forward, because you know, obviously
- 58:48Speaker 4: nothing good is going to happen past that. And I
- 58:52Speaker 4: feel like that this film just does such an exceptional
- 58:54Speaker 4: job at utilizing isolation. I mean, do you guys feel
- 58:58Speaker 4: like that this does this better than other Slashers that
- 59:03Speaker 4: were coming out around that time with how they utilized isolation.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Well, I think that anytime you have and there's there's
- 59:12Speaker 2: a ton of backwoods slasher movies the whole. A big
- 59:17Speaker 2: part of their appeal is that isolation, being cut off
- 59:23Speaker 2: from the outside world, and you know, some people are
- 59:27Speaker 2: just afraid of the woods. So I think that's just
- 59:31Speaker 2: a common fear with a lot of people too, you know,
- 59:35Speaker 2: And like Chris was saying, like, you know, the woods,
- 59:38Speaker 2: they're they're beautiful, but there is something I don't know,
- 59:46Speaker 2: there's something almost kind of ominous about them, because even
- 59:50Speaker 2: during the day, if it's if it's an especially wooded area,
- 59:55Speaker 2: it's like you're walking, you're walking into shade the whole time,
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: and like the woods are alive around you. There's constantly
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: there's constant sounds coming from all directions, and especially at
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: night when it's just pitch black, because even you know,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: even if it's a clear night, like you know, the
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: it's it's pitch black below the you know, the tree line.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: So now you hear hearing all this stuff and you
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: have no idea where it's coming from, how close it
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: is to you, you know. So yeah, the Backwood Slashers
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: definitely play on that, and I think Friday the thirteenth
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: was was really the first one that that established that
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: fear of the woods and of being isolated and you know,
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: completely cut off from anybody else. And it for me,
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: it all started with that poster. Again, the poster was
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: the first thing I saw, and it was just the
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: people inside of that silhouette holding the knife. You know,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: they're in the middle of the woods. Is even the
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: artwork is like this is thick woods. They're not in
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: the backyard. They're deep in the woods somewhere, so you
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: know they're isolated. You know, they're all alone and there's
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: somebody out there with a knife, Like that's that's scary.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: I just I love especially in this film just you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: the kills like we were talking about earlier, they're so
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: spaced out and methodical. Did you guys feel like that
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: was an effective way at building the tension as the
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: movie went on compared to some of those.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Sequels, Well for sure.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, because Victor Miller talks about how the most
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: difficult part of the writing process was trying to figure out,
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: like how do you split up everybody in ways that
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: makes sense to open up for their death, you know,
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: without having like a massacre moment where everybody gets it
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: kind of at one time, which I never really thought
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: about until he said that because I'm like, yeah, what
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: an interesting challenge to now figure out, Like it's raining,
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: I mean, it's not just raining, it is like dreadfully
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: storming outside. And all of your characters are together, and
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: now we have to separate them. And you have kind
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: of the first you know, Steve leaves and he goes
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: to the diners. So now you're your head character. You're
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: run in charge. The most is now gone, the only
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: adult is gone, right, yeah, he's gone.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: He's at the least vulnerable.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Then you have Jack and Marcy, who the storm starts,
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: they go into their cabin. Now we need to separate them, right, Okay,
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: so how do we say? Okay, so Marcie, they're gonna
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: finish up their business. Marcy's gonna go to to the showers. Okay,
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: so now they're set. Right now, you can kill Jack,
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: you can kill Marcy. But then all your other characters
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: are in one room essentially, and now we need to
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: split them up and figure out how do you do that?
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: And because like if it was me and we're at camp,
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: like if I'm not leaving your side, dude, I'm already
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: scared enough as is where I'm not leaving, But you
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: have to figure out a way to step it. And
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: like you said, because Alice goes off and goes to sleep,
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: she's just off sleeping. So now all the other characters
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: have to separate and you have to figure out how
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: to kill them off. And it's really kind of a
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: genius or like an underassessed part of the Slasher, which
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: is how to kind of figure out the geography and
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: get everyone away for a long enough time that you
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: can get them dispatched one by one and never kind
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: of question how they did that.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well, and you left out I think one of
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: the most effective deaths in the movie. And it happens
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: completely off screen, and that's Ned and you you you
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: just see that figure in front of you in the
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: on the porch of that cabin, and it goes inside
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: and Ned's like, oh, who are you? And he goes
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: inside and then it just cuts away and like.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: You know, it almost like lingers with you.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it definitely lingers with you. And you know,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: you see what happened to him later in the movie,
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: of course, but I think it's it would be scarier
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: if like you just never knew what happened to him,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Like he just walked in that cabin and the world
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: just swallowed him up. You know.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: It's like less is more. Basically it kind of leaves
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: up to the imagination of the viewer.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Well's and like everybody gets like a pretty graphic death
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: in the movie, but Neds is completely off screen. And
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: that's kind of the one that really kind of gives
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: me the chills whenever I watch it.
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: That's that's what a letter box reviewers would call a
- 1:05:01Speaker 6: plot hole.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: That's what they if you just completely they didn't see
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: they didn't I thought you were going to say that
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: they didn't see him on top of the on the
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: top of.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:14Speaker 6: But that is scary though, because that's how you do.
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: I think about Halloween twenty eighteen and David Gordon Green,
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: who I think is a phenomenal director, but even he
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: he's very very good at the off the off screen
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: kill because the reveal of what happened is incredibly effective,
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: and he did it well in Halloween twenty eighteen with
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: the guy who worked at the mechanic shop, with the
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: guy who like had it looks like he had like
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: his jaw ripped off. With the ned death, it's super
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: smart because you have Jack and Marcy who enter the cabin.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: You know, they lay down in bed together, and then
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: we have that slow reveal that Ned's by is in
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: there and they have no idea, and it's an excellent
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: way to kind of pay off the man.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: What happened so creepy there.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: And to knowing that he or to know that he's
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: just there with them and they have no idea. It
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: adds another layer to it.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Poor Netty, Poor Netty.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: The other one that I always think of, like speaking
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: of kind of what you don't see that's going on,
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: I always think about in the final chapter with Rob
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: when he's like yelling he's killing me. I'm like the
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: idea of that, Like if you watch it on first watch,
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: you probably wouldn't think anything of it, but I repeat
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: viewing as you go back, and like it just kind
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: of stays with you. I'm like, that's fucking terrifying. Like
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: I don't I don't even know what's going on. You
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: don't really see it, but he's crying out and then
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: basically at some point like you just don't hear anything.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's narrating his own death. He's like letting
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: her know, like, hey, time's running out, you need to
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: run he's let me right now, so you know I've
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: got a minute left.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: I'm buying you some time. Please fucking run.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Yeah, only he knew she was standing there the whole time,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: and she didn't run, he'd be black. Thanks, dumb bitch.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: You know I died for nothing.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: But I want to take a moment to highlight kind
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: of some of the craft, Like what what makes Tom
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: Zavini stand out? I don't think it's just the quality
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: of his effects and the quality the effects his team
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: would pump out. I mean he has I think we
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: all know. You know, he was a war photographer in Vietnam,
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: so we spent a lot of time basically photographing bodies.
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: He's seen a lot of the carnage that he's kind
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: of re enacting in an even extremer sense in real life,
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: you know, And that that helps. But it was the
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: the use and the application of the effects that I
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: think works so well. And then Alice, you talked about
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: it earlier, because it's the instruction that he gave her
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: to open the neck up, so you have the slash happen,
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: and then she pulls her head back and the wound
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: opens and it it looks so greater, even the appliance
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: that Kevin Bacon is in the bed, which they they
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: hide the seam, such a such a smart little idea
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: with his necklace. You know, they placed the necklace in
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: such a way that it kind of covers up that seam.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: And it's funny because I was watching it today and
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: every single time I watch it, I try to find
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: the exact moment they cut to it and the genius
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: part of effects or how that how they're directed, and
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: you know that that collaboration between the effects artists understanding
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: how it's going to look the best in the director
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: being able to collaborate, and they do a phenomenal job
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: with There's a there's a pretty long take above the
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: bed where we see Kevin Bacon reach out, so he
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: bends over full body, grabs the joint lights, it puts
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: the lighter back down, and then when you cut to
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: the hand coming up and grabbing his head to hold
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: him down, that first shot where you saw him moving
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: almost sells the gag so well because we just saw
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: him moving, Where could the effect be even though clearly
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: that's where the cut was to the fake lower half
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: of his body, But those little tricks. I feel like,
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: do such a good job at convincing you that there
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: was no illusion at all and that you're actually seeing
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: something happen.
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: Do you guys feel like the kills have help up
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: pretty well?
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: I think so for sure. Yeah. And you know Savini,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Savini always does something really smart, Like all of his
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: gags are just they're basically like slide of hand, Like
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: he shows you like that whole like like you just mentioned,
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: you know, Kevin Bacon reaches over see his full body
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: gets the joint, lays back down and then so it's like,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: oh man, there's no way, there's how did they do that?
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Like he will do that with certain things, like like
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: with a blade, Like he'll show like the blade hitting
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: something like the first swing at the victim will will
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: miss and hit like a wall or something and take
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: a big chunk out of the wall, and then the
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: next swing will connect and then they'll cut to you know,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: the blade has the little cutout part in it that
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: fits into the victim's arm or neck or whatever. So
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: it just it looks so real he showed you. It's
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: like a magician, but the magician shows you your card,
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: puts it back in the deck. Shuffles it and then
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: pulls it back out. But he just did that so
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: masterfully in all of everything you mentioned the burning earlier.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: There's a great scene where I think it's it's just
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: before the guy gets it in the neck and like
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: the shears the crops, he misses somebody and the shears
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: go into the raft and he pulls them out and
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: then sticks him in that dude's throat. So just he
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: was so brilliant at doing that, and I'm sure a
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: lot of that was his idea. It was like that
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: that might not have even been in the script of like,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: you know, getting the joint. Savini might have said, well,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: look if we show him reaching over his full body,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: like that's going to establish like you know, that establishes that,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: and then we cut to the grabbing and of course
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: now his body's underneath it's a fake body and blah
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: blah blah. But you know, people will will think how
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: did they do that? Yeah, So he was He was
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: really brilliant in that kind of special effects slide of hand.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: I always think about the shotgun scene in a Maniac
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: where he's in the car, and I'm like, that's that's
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: just he's so effective it just. I mean, he can
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: either do gore effects that are very subtle and very seamless,
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: or something like that where it's super over the top
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: and dial up. I think that that's just I mean,
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: his work just holds up so well as time has
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: gone on.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:12:18Speaker 6: The Maniac shotgun scene is just brilliant.
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: Dude. Every single time I watched that movie, I dropped
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: my wife notts. I'll be like, oh, here it comes here,
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: it comes in the moment that's a little motion kicks
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: in and it's just letting the camera linger on. It's
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: almost like, you know, it's like the scanner's head explosion.
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: Sometimes you just got to let the camera sit there
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: and capture what it gets. And that's what's.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Another great one from him is in the Prowler where
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: the Prowler sticks the bayonet through the top of that
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: guy's head and it comes out at the bottom of
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: his jaw. They you know, they they show the thing
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: going into the dummy head and then they cut to
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: you know, it's the guy with well however, they rigged
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: that appliance, but it's it's really him and he's reacting
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: to having a bayonet shove to his head. And it's
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: really effective, and that one lingers too, so you know,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: I mean, Sabini, he's just done so much incredible work.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: It's it's it's crazy.
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: Yeah yeah he I mean even the acts, oh.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: God, so good. But I think Friday the thirteenth is
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: what put him on the map. That was what really
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: because you know, he'd done Down of the Dead, he'd
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: done Maniac, he'd done other stuff, but like Friday the
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: thirteenth is what really put him on the map. And
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: then from there it was all the other Slashers of
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: the eighties, and then of course that all led up
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: to Today of the Dead.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, well don Don the Dead's another excellent example
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: of just the ingenuity that he had, which you know,
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: the famous machete to the head being in reverse. You know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: he always talks about that fordn the Dead, and you know,
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: as much as I loved On the Dead, I think
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: the real standout there is the aftermath of the motorcycle
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: gang invasion. You know, when people are getting you know,
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: guts ripped out and all of that stuff. He that
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: that Maniac head explosion. I mean, even just the the
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: scalping scenes and maybe are so brutal, so so vicious,
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: Yeah for sure. But to watch his trajectory go to
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: Day of the Dead, that's the magnum opus, you know
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: what I mean. That is like just decades of beautiful,
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: of incredible work leading up to working with somebody like
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Romero and having the freedom to really do these incredible gags,
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: and you look at Day of the Dead you're like, man, dude,
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: this still just hold.
- 1:15:01Speaker 6: Like even today you watch the Day of the Day
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: of to day and.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: It's yeah, it's still there's still some of those those
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: like my favorite one is the guy who gets his
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: head pulled off and you hear his vocal cords stretch.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I agree.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: That is so even now like that one, Like I
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: it makes me cringe, but at the same time, I'm.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: Just like, wow, so so effective, so effective.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: Yeah for me, it's the guy and I forget what
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: character it is, but the guy who.
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: Shoots himself Oh yeah yeah.
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: And Savini talks about how in real life when people die,
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: their jaw drops because everything just loosens, all the muscles loosen,
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: and it's you know, in a in a movie full
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: of you know, like you always remember, like you can
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: watch you know, the worst horror movie in the world,
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: and like, the one thing that I'll get you is
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: the paper cut. You know, you watch somebody get their
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: head cut off, but then a paper cut kind of
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: gets you because we kind of understand that, you know,
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: to in a movie where people are being eaten and
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: then their faces are being torn off to sell such
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: a simple or I don't want to say simple, but
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: such a gag. We've seen so many times, such as
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: just somebody shooting themselves in the head that it's really effective.
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: And that's the one effect from that movie that I
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: always every single time it comes up, I'm like, oh,
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: I don't know why that bothers me so much, but
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: it does.
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: It's like maybe it's the years of me watching Faces
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: of Death.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: I'm just like, oh God, damn it.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: Chris and I are just waiting for that four K
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: from Vinegar Syndrome.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got that one on pre order, too, very
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: excited for it.
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: Talk about well, talk about youth and uh influence Jesus
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: Christ that movie.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: Well, outside of the kills, I mean, I think another
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: standout would be, you know, the sound design for Friday
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: the thirteenth of the score. I mean, how effective do
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: you guys think that is in creating the dread that
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: comes with this film as it goes on.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: You know, I think, you know, I never really appreciated
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: Harry Manfordini's work until I heard it isolated. Now, of course,
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: when you think Friday the thirteenth, you think of the
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: you know, kid kid, kid, Mama Mom. I mean, that's
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: that's one of those things that I mean, I would
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: rank that right up there alongside the Halloween theme Jaws,
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: like you hear that, you know, you just know, right.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: But it really wasn't until I started listening to those
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: isolated that I was like, Wow, there's actually some there's
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: like some good music here, Like the compositions are really
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: good and they swing very nicely from dramatic to atmosphere
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: and creepiness. And so I really gained a lot more
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: kind of respect for Manfordini as a composer after listening
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: to them isolated, because I think in watching the movie
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: it's kind of I think in the first one that
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: it's definitely more prominent to build the atmosphere than it
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: is in some of the sequels. Like I was really
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: impressed with his score for Part five, and like watching
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: that movie, the only music I really remember is like
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: you know the pseudo echo song, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: But like listening to it isolated, I was like, well,
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: there's a lot of different kind of textures here, and
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: I I really really getting a new found respect for
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: him after listening to those scores isolated. Yeah.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: Lala Land Records has been and did an incredible job
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: so far with most of the franchise remastering and kind
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: of expanding, working with Manfordini to get the expanded tracks.
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: And it's funny because the score with the expanded tracks
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: is almost longer than the movie itself. There's a lot
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: left on the table, I feel like, but you know,
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: you're still in that era of the kind of the
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: Bernard Hermon like spikes. You know, that's where you get
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: that like the judge it. But yeah, yeah, Manfrediti does
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: a really good job at building into those and then
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: coming out of.
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: That very nicely, so you'll have like those ju ju Judgit.
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: But then it does that and it kind of builds
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: it like falls off of it very nice that I
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: really really like. It's a shame because before you listen
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: to the score isolated, like you said, his you only
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: really remember a couple things, you know what I mean,
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: there's only even watching the movie today, you don't hear
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: most of of the score or do you ever really
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: pick up on it? And they the ending song with
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: her that whether whether you want to say it was
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: real or wasn't, but the sequence of Alice on the boat,
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: that music is stunningly beautiful in that scene, but even
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: more so when you remove it.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Extremely beautiful, Yes, extremely beautiful. And you know, I don't
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: think I was actually listening to the the score for
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: part one, like just a few days ago, honestly, And
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: I freaking love fly Away, Tiny Sparrow. I just listened
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: to the I'm sorry it's it's called sail Away, Tiny Sparrow.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: I apologize, but sail Away, Tiny Sparrow. Yeah, I love
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: that one. But yeah, there's there's so much great music
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: on there that I think just kind of you're not
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: I think it's having an effect on you, but you're
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: not really picking up on it other than like the Big,
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: the Big Stingers, the Big you know the back like
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: Chris said, the Psycho you know stuff, or the k
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: mam Ma. But there's a lot going on there that
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: I think is definitely laying the groundwork of that, of
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: that atmosphere.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: But that's that's what you want from a score. You
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: want it to not stand out as much, and you
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: want to be able to pull it out separately. It's
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: kind of like, I mean, I don't even know if
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: you could really call it a score or how you
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: want to label it. But when Waxworks did the when
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: they worked with I think his name was a Wayne
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: Bell for the SEXTI Chanceaw Massacre score that they released.
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: You know, it's just noise, but I put that on
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: one night. I was editing the podcast one night when
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: that came out and I put that on. And I'm
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: a CD guy over over vinyl. I have both, but
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: my CD set up is better quality. And as I'm
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: listening to that, I'm like, holy shit, this is so
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: like this is as unnerving as a Texas chainsaw Maskers,
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: especially when you pull it away and you remaster and
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: able to pull out a lot of those.
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: Sounds, very industrial sounding.
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: It's so good man, and you don't pick up on
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: it when watching the movie almost at all, And that's
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: fantastic in that, But then when you pull it away
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: and it's just as effective, just as enjoyable. That's the
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: true power I think of it.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, well, I was gonna say, I mean, you know,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: you guys were bringing up Pamela Vorhees earlier, and obviously,
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: once she shows up kind of reframes the entire movie.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: Do you guys feel like knowing her motive changed how
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: you view everything leading up to it? Then?
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: I mean, I think everybody can kind of meet missus
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: Vorhees halfway right, because I mean, you know, her son
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: drowned because the camp counselors weren't paying attention. I'd be
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: a little pissed off about that too. I wouldn't go
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: on a murder spree. I'd probably you know, go a
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: more you know, litigious route. But you know, hey, everybody
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: deals with trauma differently, so I mean she and keep
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: in mind, all she wanted was for the camp not
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: to open, so she was sabotaging the camp for all
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: those years, and then they just had to reopen it,
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: and she couldn't allow that.
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: I mean, I always think back to obviously when she
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: shows up and then she's basically having an inner conversation
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: with herself, between her and Jason, and that's one of
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: those moments that just really elevates her performance, just because
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: I think if somebody's gone through such like, you know,
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: such trauma and you're grieving in such an extreme way,
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: I figured that that's most likely what someone's gonna end
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: up doing, you know, if you're that unhinged. But she
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: does a phenomenal job selling her character and just with
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: her portrayal. I don't know, It's just one of the
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: highlights of the film for sure.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: And when she first shows up, I mean she's just like, Hi,
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: I missus Vories, a friend of the Christie. She just
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: seems like so kind and like warm, and hey, you
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: know what's going on? And you could trust her, right absolutely,
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: you could trust her. Yeah, Like, like she shows up,
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: like if all you knew of Betsy Palmer and you
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: were watching that for the first Like if my mother
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: watched it for the first time in nineteen eighty, she'd
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: probably think, well, here's Betsy Palmer to save the freaking day. Yeah,
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And then no, she's crazy. Yeah.
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: I'm curious as to how they're going to expand on
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: it in the upcoming The Crystal Lake Show. I don't know.
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: I feel like there's definitely room there to build upon,
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: and I'm just curious of how they're gonna go about it,
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: because we all know that kind of the last I
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: don't know, fifteen years of horror has pretty much been
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: incredibly trauma focused, so much so that today the first
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: comment on a post announcing the director for the Texas
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: Chainsaw'm Asking a movie was like, Yeah, I can't wait
- 1:25:28Speaker 5: to learn about the trauma of leather Face. So I'm
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: curious how they're going to, you know, with this being
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: a prequel and with the focus being on Missus war
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: He's how they're going to do that, And I sort
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: of in a way feel like knowing too much can
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: can kind of ruin it. But at the same time,
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: there's no denying, like I think everybody can say, like, yeah,
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: I'd be pretty upset, you know.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: Uh, I mean, I I don't know. I have a
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: lot of concerns with that show because I think, like,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: like I've always said one of Friday the thirteenth, one
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: of the things I really love about it. You know,
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: they're they're comfort movies. They're basically pretty simple movies, and
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: I feel like if you try and make it too complicated,
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: it's no longer Friday the thirteenth, And you know, they're
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: gonna do eight episodes eight I'm at least one hour episodes, right,
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: that's eight hours. How can you How can you do
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: Missus Vorhe's backstory in eight hours and keep it interesting?
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: Is there enough there? And if they create too much
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: on top of it.
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: Like it's like over explaining basically, it's.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: Over explaining, it's finding Like all these all these like
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Disney Star Wars shows they did to not mess with
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: the continuity of the movies. They set them in the past,
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: but at the same time they still messed with the
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: continuity and they still messed they Yeah, I mean those
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: shows were disasters, but I don't know. To me, it
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: feels like, you know, knowing too much just kind of
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: ruins things. And what do we need to know Crazy
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: Rauf's backstory? Do we need to know the you know.
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: About it became an alcoholic?
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: Yeah, like the lady who worked at the diner, do
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: we need to know about, you know, what her day
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: to day life was like, because you know how it's
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: gonna end. So from my understanding, it's it's gonna be
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: you know, Missus Varhees had dreams of being a singer,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: those dreams, but those dreams were crushed when you know,
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: she got pregnant and the father, you know, kind of
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: just doesn't want anything to do with her or the kid.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: So now she's got to take this job at the
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: camp to make ends meet, and we know how that's
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: gonna go. So is there enough in that for eight
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: hours of television? Like, I just don't know, Like I
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: want to be optimistic about it, but I just I
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: just don't know. I like, like I really do hope
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: it's good, but I just I just have a lot
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: of doubts.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: Well, even doesn't Texas Chainsaw? Don't they Isn't that what
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: their intention is with that? They're also doing a TV
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: series for that.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they're going to explore leather faces, background or whatever.
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: Yeah. Do you think there's any chance that the show
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: maybe sort of remakes the first movie? Like maybe it
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: maybe it starts with like before and because you know,
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: we know for a fact that there was only she
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: only killed two She only killed the two counselors that
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: we see in the beginning, and then the camp shut
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: down and you know, now she begins killing again when
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: it opens. So I wonder if in those eight episodes
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: we do sort of get like a pseudo remake of
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: the first movie, whereas you're sort of seeing the events
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: of the first movie play out from her point of
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: view leading up to her death.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: Can we have just got another film?
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: I don't know, Sorry, guys, I just I don't know.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: I would really prefer that it doesn't try to rewrite anything.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Or like over explain over.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I don't want it stomping on the first
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: movie's toes or really any of the movie's toes.
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: What I want if they're going to cover any backstory,
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: I want to know where she got the brass balls
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: to do, like eighty miles an hour down that road
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: when she's driving with Annie, because she is moving down
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: that road.
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: Wasn't she a wrangler?
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: She was in a jeep?
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I do not believe for a second that
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: that thing would not be off the road. I've been
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: in them before. They don't hold up well over eighty
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: miles an hour.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: She knows those roads well, She's traveled those roads many times,
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: like the back of her hand.
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: Back to your original question, though, I mean I think
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: that she really when she shows up, it's it's powerful
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: and you can it's night and day like this the
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: acting ability, you know what I mean, the pure talent.
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: She shows up and it is like it's like the
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: maestro just entered the room and she commands every bit
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: of that sure, that monologue sequence, and what I love
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: most too, is the fight scene that that that ensues.
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: She holds her own, dude, she whoops Alice's ass, and.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: According to Adrian King, she did not pull punches and
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: like she was really especially that part on the in
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: front of the lake where she's like smashing her head
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: into the ground, like she really had a handful of
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: her hair and was really going to town like she
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: wasn't she was. I guess she would. I guess she
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: had a little method actor in her. I don't know,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: or she was just like let's get this over with,
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: Or drinking. Yeah, I think it blows to the head.
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: Yeah, she's She's fantastic, man, And my wife and I
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: talk about it all the time. Just how again, it's
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: it's almost like the thunderstorm moment that there's a very
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: clear shift in the movie when she shows up and
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: you have that brief monologue sequence in it, it stands out. Man,
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: it's a powerful moment.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I feel like when she shows up, I mean,
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: she initially comes off as like, Okay, well, thank god
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: we have somebody else here that can intervene and stop
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: all this. Like she almost as the audience disarms all
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: of us, and then you realize, oh, she's like the
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: worst case scenario of what could be happening right now.
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: She's actually the killer. It's actually terrifying.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and because she gets a little, she gets more
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: and more unhinged leading up to you know, the reveal.
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: Yeah, and this is before audiences were trained on, you know,
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: the signs that you know nowadays in a movie, if
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: somebody shows up and there's been an unknown killer, you know,
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: automatically people are ready for that to be and now
- 1:32:56Speaker 5: and nowadays are trying to subvert that even further. Then,
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: like we talked about earlier, those rules weren't in place,
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: So she probably genuinely and knows movie theaters genuinely disarmed
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: the audience in a way that was like, oh, great,
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: help is here. And then as she goes on, you're like, fuck,
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: we're not out of us yet, man, not at all.
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: Do you guys feel like the last fight is satisfying
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: with how everything wraps up?
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: Oh? For sure, dude.
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: That decapitation is so good.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: It's pretty impressive.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that decapitation is really really good. And that and
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: that jump scare at the end. Like I remember watching
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: the movie for the first time with my girlfriend and
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: I was side eyeing her, you know, because we talked
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: about that beautiful music. And you know, Alice leans over
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: the boat. It's that it's beautiful morning and she just
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: kind of touches the water, runs her hands through the water.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: It's like, oh, it's over. And then you know, Jason
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: bursts out of the water. My girlfriend jumped out of
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: her seat and it was so fun it was so funny.
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: It's such a beautiful shot too. Again, another moment in
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: the film that disarms us. We think we're finally safe,
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: and here we are back at it again.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: And and and that and that ending too, I think
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: is really haunting because you know, she's she's in the hospital.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: She's talking to the sheriff and what about the boy,
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: what boy, the little boy in the lake, the one
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: that the one that grabbed me. Well he didn't find
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: any boy. Oh well he's still there. And it fades
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: to the water again, and that beautiful music swells again.
- 1:34:41Speaker 8: It's just like, Oh, well, I was gonna say, because
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: that last sequence on the lake, you know, whether you
- 1:34:47Speaker 8: interpret it as like some sort of a dream, I mean,
- 1:34:50Speaker 8: that definitely shifts the tone of the rest of the
- 1:34:53Speaker 8: film all the way up until the end.
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: I mean, how do you guys interpret that?
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Well, from what I heard, I don't remember who told
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: me this. Maybe this is in like the novelization. I
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: don't recall, but like there's an even larger dream sequence
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: where like Alan maybe this was the I don't I
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: wish I could remember it completely, but like there was
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: a scene where Alice sees all of the dead people
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: and like they're hanging in trees and they start to
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: talk to her. Oh God, and like that was maybe
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: the dream sequence that ended it. I don't recall. Somebody
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: told me this. It might have been. It might be
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: in the novelization, or maybe I heard it. Maybe it
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: was in a Victor Miller interview. I don't recall. But
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: there was supposed to be it was supposed to be
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: a little a little more dreamier, I think toward the end.
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: I mean, do you guys consider you know, obviously, when
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: Jason pops out of the water and you know, grabs
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: a hold of Alice. You guys consider that one of
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: the most effective last scare moments they get in a
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: horror film.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: I think so.
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: I think the only one that I think opposite for
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: me is the end of Diploma's Carrie, Oh Yeah.
- 1:36:16Speaker 6: Which is I mean this essentially just does that.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, And and and they've admitted that they like Victor
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: Miller and Sean cunning have both were like, that was
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: our Carrie ending. Mm hmm, so like they were, yeah,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: they saw how effective that ending was for Carrie, and
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: they're like, Okay.
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: Chris, I thought you were going to bring up the
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: ending of the first Nightmare in Elm Street where the
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: mom gets sud ragged through the door.
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: That's a favorite of mine, man, Let's tell you, yeah,
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: I do. I've always kind of thought about it and
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: wondered kind of how I feel about it. And sometimes
- 1:36:56Speaker 5: I think it's just because clearly the beginning of Fright
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: thirty part two, you know, when some people jokingly go like, oh,
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: all of a sudden, Jason's you know, fully grown and
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: he's out, you know, and he kills Alison. It's only
- 1:37:10Speaker 5: been so many years or whatever. And I think in
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: movies you can just create scenes like this with no
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: explanation why. I think it's an incredibly smart way to
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: end your movie. How else could you imagine if it
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: was just like the cops showed up and you know,
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: she was asleep on the beach waiting for them like that,
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: that wouldn't be remarkable, you know, to come up with,
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: to come up with the idea of you know, okay,
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: she got in the boat, she pushes out and you know, hey,
- 1:37:41Speaker 5: let's let's let's have the sun pop out. And the
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: sun just happens to be horribly disfigured. And that's sometimes
- 1:37:48Speaker 5: it's just a matter of like, hey, that's pretty scary,
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: let's just do that, you know. And it's as simple
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: as that sometimes, and I think it's effective for the movie.
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: I think people give that scene a little too much
- 1:38:03Speaker 5: levity as far as like when they're trying to explain
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: the timeline, you know, because I've I've actually watched YouTube
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: videos of people that are like.
- 1:38:12Speaker 6: It doesn't make any sense that all of a sudden,
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: he's you.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: Know, and it's like, well, I uh, not to cut
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: you off, but like, I I hate that when people
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: talk about the timelines like who cares? Who cares?
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: Like that.
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: Like even the masks. People get so up their own
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: butt about the masks, like, well, did Tommy make the
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: Part six mask? Where did he get the Part six mask?
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: And how would how would who made the Part eight mask?
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: And how did they know there was an axe cut
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: in it? It's like who cares? Like you're you're thinking
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: way too deep into it. Jason wears a hockey mask.
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: He needs a hockey mask, you know, like who who?
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: Who cares? We know that three and four? That's that's
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: the same mask Roy made his mask. M hm, you
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: can look at the Part six Sure Tommy made it.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: Tommy likes to make masks. Tommy was having hallucinations of
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: Jason and he was wearing a mask similar to that.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: So there you go. The Part seven mask is the
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: Part six masks just deformed. And the guy on the
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: boat made the Part eight mask because he knows about
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: the legacy of Crystal Lake, so he made it. Like
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: who cares? Like you're putting way too much thought into
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: these stupid little you know, Oh well, how can they
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: all take place on Friday the thirteenth, when two, three
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: and four back to back to back? Who cares? Who cares?
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Man you're thinking way too deep into it.
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: I was just more impressed with the fact that in
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: part two Jason he's polite enough to take the kettle
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: off the high stove.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: He didn't like that sound. That sound was he did?
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: He did it for the cat. Should they should have
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: showed him pooring. They should have showed him pouring out
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: some food for the cat before he left, like the
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: thanks to sev.
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's okay, That's that's how I was trying
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: to think of us, like, I know I've seen that recently.
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, oh yeah, well we did our thankshooving
- 1:40:06Speaker 5: episode yea.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: Or they should have showed him like picking the cat
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: up and you know, putting it in the oven or something,
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: and like sitting there waiting for it. He wants a
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: hot meal tonight.
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:22Speaker 5: I mean I think the ending is I think it's
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: it's phenomenal, whether it's ripping off or not. I mean,
- 1:40:29Speaker 5: you could say paying homage to Carry. I mean it
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: was just as effective and Carry. This is clearly a
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: whole nother level with him coming out of the water
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: grabbing her.
- 1:40:38Speaker 6: I think it's shot super well with this slow motion.
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: It gives you, like that really great shot of young
- 1:40:44Speaker 5: Jason Vorhees, so it would become and it does. Like
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: whether or not there was more sequels that followed, people
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: would still be kind of questioning who that was in
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: the lake and you know, if it was real, if
- 1:40:58Speaker 5: it wasn't, then yeah, it's sometimes man, things are just
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: what they are. And obviously, like Steve, you and I
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: we've watched We've listened to so many commentaries and watched
- 1:41:07Speaker 5: so many interviews, and one of my favorite parts of
- 1:41:10Speaker 5: it are when directors go, yeah, you know, there's this
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: long People come up to me at Ed Exposed and
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: they say, oh, did you intend to do this because
- 1:41:18Speaker 5: it's this deep thing and he's like, nah, man, that
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: was just an idea that we had, so we did
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: it with no deeper thought.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's I mean, like nobody was thinking
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: about Friday the Thirteenth Part two while making Friday the thirteen,
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Like, it's kind of the
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: same question I hear. You know, people will say, so,
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: when you were making this tiny little slasher movie in
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: nineteen eighty one, did you ever think that it was
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: going to become a huge, mega hit. It's like, no, no,
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: of course, I did you know, did you ever think
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: that this would happen? No, No, I didn't. I was
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: just thinking about finishing the movie, That's.
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: What I was going to say. I feel like most
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: of the time they were, you know, focusing all their
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: attention strictly on that film, not so much with the
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: intention that it was ever gonna spawn sequels like that.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: Yeah for sure, I.
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: Mean yeah, yeah, I mean Sean Cunningham actually said in
- 1:42:14Speaker 5: the in the well in the interview they used for
- 1:42:17Speaker 5: the commentary, He's like, dude, we were just trying to
- 1:42:20Speaker 5: like get it on screen and make sure that like
- 1:42:22Speaker 5: the audio works. Yeah, that's all we're worried about. Yeahs
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: of filmmaking, that's all they were concerned about.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: I swear, well, I was gonna say, I mean, where
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: do you guys place this alongside Halloween in terms of
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: shaping the slasher group, Oh, my gosh, blueprint.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: I think it was. I think it was even more
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: fundamental to that, especially in the eighties. Like I mean,
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: you know, Halloween did its thing Friday the thirteenth kind
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: of ripped it off, but they took it to it
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: entirely different less. They added some sleeves into it, they
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: added the graphic violence into it. And and that was
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: the blueprint that they followed throughout the eighties was we
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: got to give them good kills, little sleeves, little TNA
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: works too, and you know that's when you got I mean,
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: there's nine thousand Backwood slasher movies in the eighties. Every
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: one of those can be linked back to Friday the thirteenth.
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think what's what's funny to think about
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: is Halloween inspires Friday the thirteenth, and then Friday the
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: thirteenth inspires Halloween two. Because nad Halloween too. John Carpenter
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: was like, oh, we got to go back and add
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: more gore and we need we need some tits to
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: get to that level now because that's what audiences expect.
- 1:43:53Speaker 5: So there's this kind of constant, you know, back and
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: forth with them. I think Halloween is, by and far,
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: in my opinion, the better made horror movie like Halloween
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: to me, is a perfect movie front the back. Carpenter
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: was absolutely cooking with gas on that movie, and I
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: think that I think that movie has had so much influence,
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: more than most horror movies ever have. And I think
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: Friday the thirteenth, Friday Thirteenth, while still a very well
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: made movie, has more influence on just kind of like
- 1:44:38Speaker 5: what became the rules in the establishment of the slasher genre.
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: I feel like people are still trying to.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: Mimic what Halloween did in the way that it did it,
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: you know what I mean? Does that make sense?
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: And I think Friday the Thirteenth too, also informed what
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: a sequel is supposed to do. Like you said, Halloween
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: two was inspired by Friday the thirteenth, So like people
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: knew if they were making sequels, there had to be
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: more more deaths, more elaborate deaths, more gore, more nudity,
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: We have to up the ante and that was something
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: that Friday the Thirteenth did as well. So I think
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: I think they the movie didn't just inform, you know,
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: the backwood slasher craze of the eighties, but here's how
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: you do a sequel too.
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: Yeah, no, you guys are absolutely right. And then I
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: was going to ask, like, what stands out more now
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: than it did the first time you guys saw Fright
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: the thirteenth.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: I mean, for sure, just how well made it is,
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: how atmospheric it is, how well written it is, how
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: great the characters are, how great the score is, you know, yeah,
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: and and how and how underrated I think it.
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: Is do you? And I don't know how it is
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: for you guys. But sometimes I fall into a place
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: where I will admire something differently just because I miss
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: the simplicity of it, you know. And it's almost like
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: I felt like when I saw my favorite movie so
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: far this year was is Primate, and Primate is this
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: very simple like slasher movie with a with an ape.
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: It doesn't try to be anything else. And I almost
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: think like that's what I admire most about it is
- 1:46:43Speaker 5: because there isn't this very deep contextual meaning to it all.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: It's not trying to provoke, you know, some sort of
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: like lost feelings and its audience or relate on that level.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: Sometimes it's just most of effective that it's this simple.
- 1:47:02Speaker 5: There's you're there in the woods and there's somebody taking
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: them out one by one, and the reason they're being
- 1:47:08Speaker 5: taken out is, you know, because of a mother grieving
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: the death of her son. From the counselors. It's that simple.
- 1:47:16Speaker 5: And sometimes you go back and you know, we talk
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: about it all the time, man, the power of rewatch.
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: I feel like movies from this era will forever.
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: Be we They will constantly change in our head the
- 1:47:32Speaker 5: more we go back and the more we watch them,
- 1:47:34Speaker 5: and looking at them through the lens of what horror
- 1:47:38Speaker 5: currently is versus what it was then, I think is
- 1:47:45Speaker 5: a very powerful thing. And the couple last couple of
- 1:47:50Speaker 5: rewatches preparing for this I picked up on the same
- 1:47:53Speaker 5: things that Piz talked about. It was just there. There
- 1:47:56Speaker 5: is an artistry to this movie. There is a technical
- 1:48:00Speaker 5: wizardry there. You can tell that there was effort applied,
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: even though you might think that there wasn't great atmosphere,
- 1:48:10Speaker 5: very good characters, phenomenal death sequences. But I think, I think,
- 1:48:19Speaker 5: what really, what what this this time around really sold
- 1:48:27Speaker 5: for me, is that this franchise is built on extremely
- 1:48:35Speaker 5: solid grounds, like We go back and even you know,
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: people now turning around on new beginning, or people finding
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: the love for Jason goes to Hell. You know, every
- 1:48:48Speaker 5: single one of these movies is getting this resurgence and
- 1:48:51Speaker 5: this people were analyzing them again and finding out that,
- 1:48:55Speaker 5: like Man Friday the Thirteenth, has roots that are stronger
- 1:48:57Speaker 5: than most franchises did. I mean, it's really tough to
- 1:49:00Speaker 5: justify Hell Razor past Hell Razor three, you know what
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: I mean, Like, if you even get that far. Uh,
- 1:49:09Speaker 5: it's really it's really tough to look at a lot
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: of these franchises that were the very few that went
- 1:49:13Speaker 5: this long and are as strong as the original. And
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: I actually think Ride thirteenth is one of those ones
- 1:49:22Speaker 5: where there are sequels that are stronger than this original.
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: But it's a very consistent franchise for the most part.
- 1:49:29Speaker 5: Well it delivers on exactly you know what you want
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: it to. But now, like, come on, man, I remember
- 1:49:37Speaker 5: I remember first time watching Jason Goes to Hell and
- 1:49:39Speaker 5: everybody fucking hated that movie. Dude. Now we have the
- 1:49:43Speaker 5: Hearts of Darkness documentary and you know, we had a
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: chance to talk to Adam Marcus and share our love
- 1:49:49Speaker 5: for it.
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: It's got this wonderful Arrow four K release.
- 1:49:52Speaker 5: And you go back, you go back and you watch
- 1:49:55Speaker 5: that movie and you look at all the swings that
- 1:49:56Speaker 5: are taken and you're like, look, dude, this is so good.
- 1:49:59Speaker 5: Like the risk to ditch Jason vod He's to blow
- 1:50:04Speaker 5: him up very turn it into this body you know,
- 1:50:10Speaker 5: hopping horror movie that that now gets crossed with an
- 1:50:13Speaker 5: eceranomicon and it's really cool to see man. And I
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: don't know, maybe it's just me hearkening back for better times,
- 1:50:21Speaker 5: but I really just love a nice, simple, well made,
- 1:50:29Speaker 5: you know, slasher movie like this.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the like you said, I think the
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: Friday the Thirteenth movies, even some of the lesser ones,
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: they make a very simple promise and for the most part,
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: they all deliver. Really so that's something I love about
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: this franchise. And yeah, you know, you make it too complicated,
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: then it's it's like.
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: It's just not kind of weighs it down.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: Then it weighs it down. Yeah, it doesn't. It's like
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: it's like I said earlier, you make it too complicated.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: It's no longer Friday the thirteenth.
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: So I have a question for you guys, And I
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: figured this is a great way to wrap it up.
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: But if this were a one off film with no sequels,
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: how would we talk about Friday the thirteenth today?
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: I think we would talk about it more than it
- 1:51:29Speaker 5: is now, to be honest with you, I think.
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: Like a deeper appreciation for just the first one.
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you look at rankings for Friday the thirteenth,
- 1:51:42Speaker 5: then you know, I feel like the first movie is
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: always it's either first or it's like middle of the back.
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: I think this movie is incredibly interesting if it never
- 1:51:54Speaker 5: spun off. It's kind of like The Burning. You look
- 1:51:56Speaker 5: at the Burning, and it's like, man, there was franchise,
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: you know. You look at the Burning, you look at
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: my bloody Valentine, you think, maybe just franchise written all
- 1:52:04Speaker 5: over this thing. And it never turned into that. So
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: it actually makes those movies a little bit more interesting
- 1:52:09Speaker 5: that they are one offs. But I think those movies
- 1:52:15Speaker 5: exist because of Friday the thirteenth, you know, and if
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: they had never spun off into a thing, I actually wonder.
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: I think I think a broader question would be, like,
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: would the decade of the eighties would horror be talked
- 1:52:32Speaker 5: about like it was if Friday the thirteenth wasn't leading
- 1:52:36Speaker 5: the back and dominating that, you know what I mean?
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: That's interesting because I feel like it's trajectory probably would
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: have changed quite a bit.
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, there's there's so much inspiration to come
- 1:52:53Speaker 5: from Friday the thirteenth. Friday Thirteenth Part two created I
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: feel like more inspiration Friday Thirteenth Part three. Jason gets
- 1:53:00Speaker 5: his mask that becomes synonymous with eighties horror horror forever.
- 1:53:07Speaker 5: You know, that's there's these landmark moments that almost feel
- 1:53:11Speaker 5: like what wouldn't exist if we didn't get these things
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: that we just look at as a brief moment and
- 1:53:18Speaker 5: in this one movie somewhere. So, I don't know, I
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: think it's interesting.
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really interesting question, because if it had
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: just been the one movie, like I still feel like,
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: you know, I still feel like, you know, the Burning
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: and sleep Away Camp and My Bloody Valentine and all
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: those other either backward slashers or like you know, Hall
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: you know, date themed slashers probably still would have happened.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: But you know, I wonder if you know, keep in
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: mind too, like those movies weren't like huge hits at
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: the box office, and outside of Sleeping with Camp, none
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: of them had sequels. So would the eighties slasher craze
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: have extended as far into the decade as it had
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: if there were no Friday the Thirteenth sequels? And Yeah,
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: I also kind of think, like, I don't know, I
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: don't know if it would be talked about as much
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: these days. I think it would be in that obscure
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: one off category maybe even I don't know. I think
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: it would be one of those movies that we talk about, like,
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: you know what if it did get sequels, you know,
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: like The Burning or My Boody Valentine. But I feel
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: like we talk about The Burning and My Bloody Valentine
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: more often than Friday the Thirteenth. Maybe if it had just.
- 1:54:52Speaker 6: Been a one off, you raise a good bu But.
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: I think at the same time, if it had just
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: been a one off, it would have been reassessed years
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: ago maybe and it would be in higher standing, so
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: you can. I don't know that that's a really interesting question.
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: It's it's kind of difficult to wrap my mind around
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: it because we've got so many sequels, and you know,
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: I love those movies so much.
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: Like to think I think you guys might be onto something,
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: because I feel like if this was just one off
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: on its own, I think it would still be really appreciated.
- 1:55:27Speaker 4: As far as a slasher. I think it would just
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: fall more in the line of like The Burning, The Prowler,
- 1:55:33Speaker 4: My Bloody Valentine, you know, films that never really got
- 1:55:38Speaker 4: true sequels after that, but we still hold in high regards.
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: I just don't think I would have this you know,
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: long lasting legacy, the way that the Friday the Thirteenth
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: franchise ended up having.
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: Yeah, but we're we're in it like an interesting place
- 1:55:55Speaker 5: because we all three of us collect physical media. We
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: love physical media. And how many times do we, no
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: matter how educated or into the genre, you know, we
- 1:56:07Speaker 5: feel that we are How many times does a movie
- 1:56:11Speaker 5: get its first major release in I don't know, let's
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: say twenty or so more years, and then all of
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: a sudden, we're talking about it as this new classic
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: even though we've known it all along. Sometimes like there's
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: releases that come out and you know, it's like kind
- 1:56:30Speaker 5: of like re Animator, right, re Animator has been a
- 1:56:32Speaker 5: favorite movie of mine since I was a teenager. And
- 1:56:37Speaker 5: then Ignite Films announces the four K and all of
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: a sudden, re Animator feels like the movie that nobody
- 1:56:43Speaker 5: talks about, and now everyone's like, oh, this is a
- 1:56:46Speaker 5: bona fide classic. But then just the conversation gets picked
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: back up because it's current.
- 1:56:52Speaker 4: So if I see that, yeah, I've seen that with
- 1:56:56Speaker 4: quite a few horror movies. I feel like in recent years,
- 1:56:58Speaker 4: you know, you get some high end you know, four
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: K box set for said release and then you know
- 1:57:04Speaker 4: there's almost like a resurgence of popularity or interest in
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: the film.
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: Well, like we talk about Folci, you know, you and
- 1:57:10Speaker 5: I love Folci, but oh yeah, the big Folgie moment
- 1:57:14Speaker 5: has sort of like coming gone again. It's almost like,
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: you know, we got you got City of Living, you
- 1:57:19Speaker 5: got you got City Living Dead on four K, you
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: got House by the Cemetery, you got Zombie and it
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: felt like the last big thing was like when grind
- 1:57:27Speaker 5: House releasing just last year did the Beyond, and then
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: then all of a sudden, it felt like all the
- 1:57:33Speaker 5: conversation around fol Gi kind of stopped again, you know
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: what I mean, And now you have Vindergar Syndrome doing
- 1:57:40Speaker 5: produced by Lucio Folgi moments, which was kind of like
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: what hattened with Ourgento when Argento went through his big
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: kind of resurgence, probably like ten or so years ago.
- 1:57:50Speaker 5: It's kind of like then the whole catalog gets hit
- 1:57:52Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden, you're doing like all
- 1:57:54Speaker 5: these produced by Dario or Argento releases because the name
- 1:57:58Speaker 5: there's synonymous with the name, so I guess it would
- 1:58:01Speaker 5: depend on kind of how long was it out of
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: the Spotlight. How long would Friday thirteenth have been out
- 1:58:07Speaker 5: of the spotlight and at what point what would bring
- 1:58:11Speaker 5: it back in Whether it would be a newly announced sequel,
- 1:58:14Speaker 5: or it would be a physical media released or something.
- 1:58:16Speaker 5: I think that it's interesting to think about it in
- 1:58:19Speaker 5: that way. It's total opposite of what it is now.
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: Well just imagine if it had been that one off
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: and they did, what would the two thousand and nine
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: remake have look like? But Yeah, that question really kind
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: of throws me into an existential crisis because I don't
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: want to live in a world without the Friday the
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: thirteenth six.
- 1:58:39Speaker 4: No, I'm telling you, PiZZ you hit the nail on
- 1:58:42Speaker 4: the head earlier when you were talking about those first eight.
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: Those and not that it takes away anything from the
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: other ones. It's just those I feel you sit down
- 1:58:52Speaker 4: and you watch the first one, then it's like I
- 1:58:55Speaker 4: automatically feel compelled to get through at least the set
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: in that follow because there's just this charm to them,
- 1:59:03Speaker 4: and it's something that I don't think we see with
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: a lot of like more recent horror movies. I don't
- 1:59:09Speaker 4: find myself longing to go back and revisit them the
- 1:59:12Speaker 4: same way that I can watch these films time and
- 1:59:16Speaker 4: time again and never get tired of them.
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely yeah.
- 1:59:20Speaker 5: It's kind of like, uh, last week I sat down
- 1:59:24Speaker 5: and I was like, I want to watch Psycho, and
- 1:59:26Speaker 5: I got halfway through Psycho and it just maybe want
- 1:59:28Speaker 5: to watch Psycho two. Like there's just something like to those.
- 1:59:32Speaker 5: But like when I sit down, I watched Friday the thirteenth,
- 1:59:34Speaker 5: like I watched Bribe thirteenth today, I'm already like, all right, tomorrow,
- 1:59:36Speaker 5: I'm probably gonna watch Part two and then I'm gonna
- 1:59:38Speaker 5: watch three D. Whereas like night We're in Upstreet. As
- 1:59:42Speaker 5: much as I love that franchise, when I got that
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: four K box that, I'm still not all the way
- 1:59:45Speaker 5: through what I've been kind of jumping around and picking
- 1:59:48Speaker 5: it took my time with Up. Yeah. When when Screen
- 1:59:51Speaker 5: Factory put out that Friday the thirteenth box set, I
- 1:59:53Speaker 5: went one by one by one and in a very
- 1:59:55Speaker 5: quick succession, like I think I went through all eight
- 1:59:59Speaker 5: of them, or well, Freddy Verschason was in there, so
- 2:00:02Speaker 5: all nine of those movies within a week of them
- 2:00:05Speaker 5: coming out. It's rare that I'm like, oh, I'm in
- 2:00:08Speaker 5: the mood to watch, you know, Final Chapter. Usually if
- 2:00:12Speaker 5: I watch Final Chapter, I'm gonna watch New Beginning and
- 2:00:14Speaker 5: then I'm gonna watch Jason Lyz. Course, you know, it's
- 2:00:17Speaker 5: like addicting.
- 2:00:25Speaker 4: Well, I feel like we covered just about everything for
- 2:00:28Speaker 4: Friday the thirteenth on this one.
- 2:00:32Speaker 5: I to be honest with you, guys, I was wondering before.
- 2:00:37Speaker 5: I was like, I wonder how much time we can
- 2:00:39Speaker 5: fill in a Friday the thirteenth episode, And I for
- 2:00:42Speaker 5: sure would have took you taken the other on two hours.
- 2:00:45Speaker 5: But but hell yeah, I'm glad we got this man
- 2:00:52Speaker 5: two hours on the original Friday the thirteenth, when I
- 2:00:55Speaker 5: feel like there's a million podcast episodes out there. On
- 2:00:59Speaker 5: this movie, I'm really proud of of this.
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: I'm still trying to wrap my mind around a world
- 2:01:07Speaker 2: with no sequels, and I just don't like it. I
- 2:01:10Speaker 2: just don't like it. You've kind of you've kind of
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: put me in a depression here.
- 2:01:14Speaker 4: Well, listen, PiZZ, it's a world that you don't have
- 2:01:17Speaker 4: to worry about, at least in in our our universe.
- 2:01:21Speaker 4: I don't know about the multiverse.
- 2:01:22Speaker 7: But thank god, well, PiZZ, thank you so much for
- 2:01:29Speaker 7: Jordan on this episode going through this.
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, thank you, guys. I appreciate it. It was uh,
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: it was fun. I always, you know, always have fun
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: talking Friday the thirteenth, So thank you for the invite.
- 2:01:43Speaker 5: Of course. Man. Always, do you want to let anybody
- 2:01:46Speaker 5: know where they can find you? Kind of anything you
- 2:01:49Speaker 5: want to plug before we go?
- 2:01:51Speaker 2: Uh, nothing necessarily to plug, but YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, take Talk, Twitter,
- 2:02:02Speaker 2: at pizzol on all of them.
- 2:02:07Speaker 5: Perfect. I'm pretty sure most people are already following you anyway. Man.
- 2:02:11Speaker 4: You're You're a legend in our space, a mainstay.

- 2:02:18Speaker 2: of me.

- 2:02:24Speaker 5: to find you at?

- 2:02:58Speaker 5: I'm trying. Man, dude, somebody somebody message me the other day.
- 2:03:01Speaker 5: I'll use this as like a cap. Somebody message me
- 2:03:03Speaker 5: the other day and they're like, they were like, I
- 2:03:07Speaker 5: read your I read your post about John Woo's Hard Boiled,
- 2:03:11Speaker 5: and they're like, I was so excited to watch the
- 2:03:13Speaker 5: bonus features until I realized at the second disc the
- 2:03:16Speaker 5: Blu Ray was region locked, and now I can't even
- 2:03:18Speaker 5: watch that. And I was like, well, that's your own
- 2:03:22Speaker 5: damn problem for not being region free. So I don't
- 2:03:25Speaker 5: know how to I don't like that.
- 2:03:27Speaker 4: Be there, got it?
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: You know you're gotta get that reagion free player.
