- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for Back to the Basics in Healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balanced Life Chiropractic. We're here with Dr. Harley, and we're
- 0:04Speaker 1: going to continue our tour of the spine. And we're
- 0:07Speaker 1: going to start with the thoracic spine. What is the
- 0:10Speaker 1: thoracic spine?
- 0:12Speaker 2: So the thoracic spine is your kind of upper back.
- 0:14Speaker 2: From like the top of your back to kind of mid-back,
- 0:17Speaker 2: we start getting like that little bit of a curve
- 0:19Speaker 2: going the opposite direction. So there are 12 segments in
- 0:22Speaker 2: our thoracic spine. So we'll be talking about this one for.
- 0:24Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And we just finished up the cervical spine. So if
- 0:27Speaker 1: you're wondering about that, you can listen to one of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the older episodes of the podcast, SiouxFallsPodcast.com. But let's start
- 0:34Speaker 1: with 1T. We'll start on top and work our way down.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Did you say T1 or 1T?
- 0:37Speaker 2: T1.
- 0:38Speaker 3: T1. For whatever reason, my poster has it as 1T.
- 0:41Speaker 4: T1.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I never noticed that until we started talking about it.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm pointing it out, and she's like, what are
- 0:45Speaker 4: you talking about? So T1. So let's talk about that.
- 0:48Speaker 2: So T1 kind of is a little bit with that
- 0:50Speaker 2: brachial plexus we talked about with the cervical spine, the
- 0:54Speaker 2: lower branches.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Of the neck.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So T1 does a lot of the muscles in our
- 0:58Speaker 2: upper back, parts of our arms as well. So we
- 1:01Speaker 2: see more hands and wrists and fingers, even kind of
- 1:05Speaker 2: some throat airways, esophagus, trachea, a lot of it kind
- 1:09Speaker 2: of like right at the top of our neck or
- 1:11Speaker 2: right at the top of our back at the bottom
- 1:13Speaker 2: of our neck, that general area is going to be
- 1:15Speaker 2: that T1, C7, they kind of interchange a little bit.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Very nice.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I see on here it's saying upper extremities from
- 1:21Speaker 1: the elbows down, hands, wrists, fingers, But also the esophagus
- 1:25Speaker 1: and the trachea.
- 1:26Speaker 4: So there's a lot of stuff involved here.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Right. We've got a lot going on because we're getting
- 1:30Speaker 2: to that junction between our head and our neck and
- 1:33Speaker 2: down into the trunk main part of our body.
- 1:35Speaker 3: So there's a lot going on through there.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And is this something that, would you say this is
- 1:39Speaker 1: a pretty common area where people have issues or is
- 1:41Speaker 1: this not necessarily as common?
- 1:44Speaker 3: I think so. A big part of it is posture.
- 1:46Speaker 3: We have a lot of forward head posture. We've talked
- 1:48Speaker 3: a lot about that.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That C6, 7, T1 area get very stressed out through
- 1:53Speaker 2: there as we have a lot more forward head posture.
- 1:56Speaker 1: People like my wife Heidi playing video games on her
- 1:58Speaker 1: phone all the time.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Or John Smalls scrolling on his phone.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I only said it because Heidi's standing right over here.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But no, that is in today's day and age, there's
- 2:09Speaker 1: a lot of people spend a lot of screen time
- 2:11Speaker 1: and then they have their head kind of hunched down,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and this is one of the areas where they'll notice that?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That's a big hinge point for, like, if you extend
- 2:20Speaker 2: your head back and forth, we are hinging around that
- 2:23Speaker 2: general region. So we have a lot of muscle attachments
- 2:26Speaker 2: through there, so we can see a lot more tension
- 2:30Speaker 2: in that area.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So if somebody listening is going, okay, you know what,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I've had some issues with this, and, yes, I do
- 2:36Speaker 1: spend a lot of time on my phone playing Candy Crush.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Or whatever. I'm just using that as an example. Got
- 2:42Speaker 4: a dirty look from Heidi. Oh, you don't have it anymore?
- 2:45Speaker 1: Okay, well, she was up to like $ 11, 000.
- 2:48Speaker 4: To $ 12, 000 or something.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But if there is somebody that's having some issues because
- 2:52Speaker 1: they're spending a little too much time on their phone,
- 2:53Speaker 1: this could be one of the areas. What is the
- 2:55Speaker 1: best way for them to connect with you to come
- 2:56Speaker 1: in and say, hey, doc, fix me?
- 2:58Speaker 3: Well, we have to start with your new patient appointment.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So we don't take just a walk in. We do
- 3:03Speaker 3: need a schedule.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So that way we make sure we have the time
- 3:05Speaker 2: in our schedules to sit down, talk with you, go through.
- 3:08Speaker 3: All of your concerns, your health issues.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And so that way we can put together the best
- 3:12Speaker 2: plan of action on how to help you with what
- 3:14Speaker 2: you're dealing with. So really give us a phone call.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You know, it's the simplest one. Our phone number is 605-215-1785.
- 3:19Speaker 2: We even have a book online option on our website.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Very nice.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And if you want to go to that website, I'll
- 3:26Speaker 1: give you that here in a second. But When you
- 3:27Speaker 1: get there, you'll also find a link to their social media,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and you'll find their phone number. So when you get there,
- 3:31Speaker 1: if you go, hey, I'm going to just call.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Either way, find all of the information. The website is balancedlifesd.com.
