- 0:00most to-do lists that I have made are not really plans.
- 0:04They're storage units for every unfinished responsibility in my life,
- 0:10or even every wishful thought that I had about what I could possibly do.
- 0:16There's call the dentist, clean the bathroom, plan next
- 0:20month, whatever that means
- 0:22Answer that email, buy birthday presents, fix the closet, research something I
- 0:28might not even need until November.
- 0:30Now really, these are the things that generally don't even make it onto the
- 0:33list, but they're in my mental list.
- 0:36And then I write down all the things that I should probably be doing, but I'm not.
- 0:43I look at that list and somehow feel both busy and unable to begin.
- 0:50Now, the problem is not that I need a better to-do list.
- 0:54I don't need a better system.
- 0:56The problem isn't really the planner
- 0:59The problem is the vagueness and the mix of options in this list
- 1:08Almost none of the items on those lists are things that could actually
- 1:13be done in five or 10 minutes.
- 1:15Like, plan next month.
- 1:17What does that even mean?
- 1:19Call the dentist is more of the kind of task that might be
- 1:23doable on a list, but that is the minority of what lands on my list.
- 1:29I need to make smaller tasks that can actually happen So when I stopped
- 1:37working from an enormous list of things to do, or honestly dozens of different
- 1:45lists for different projects, and started using a daily card, a daily
- 1:51Post-it with only three priorities for this particular day, that's
- 1:58when I started to see real traction.
- 2:01So in this video, I'm gonna show you why long to-do lists create
- 2:07overwhelm, not action, and how a daily card can turn vague responsibilities
- 2:14into a workable day And also what exactly belongs on your daily card.
- 2:21This is the exact process that helped me stop carrying everything at once
- 2:26and start making steady progress on what actually mattered in my life
- 2:33Welcome to the Christian homemaking podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 2:37I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker, homeschool mom, and author of the book Home is
- 2:42for Hospitality: Why Your Home and Homemaking Matter Convivial means
- 2:47enjoying life together, and that's what we want to use our homes Four, we
- 2:54want to build those moments and family
- 2:58and family connections that build people up.
- 3:03That's being convivial.
- 3:05We want convivial homes, but it often takes skills and thought
- 3:12that we have never practiced or even been told about before.
- 3:16So
- 3:17I am here to break it down and give it to you in bite-size, doable pieces.
- 3:23So grab a basket of laundry to fold and let's dig in.
- 3:28Now, I still keep lists.
- 3:30I need somewhere to capture tasks, projects, errands,
- 3:34reminders, ideas, all the things.
- 3:37Things need to be written down.
- 3:40But I never look at those lists during the day.
- 3:44They are not what run my day, and they often rarely filter onto
- 3:50my actionable list, honestly.
- 3:52I just need to get it out of my head so that I can use my head to
- 3:57n-navigate and negotiate the actual day.
- 4:01I need to declutter my head by writing it all down.
- 4:04Most of what I write down and capture on those lists I rarely look at, but it makes
- 4:10a huge difference to get it out of my head
- 4:13The daily card is where action happens.
- 4:17This is where the daily decisions are made and where I know what I'm
- 4:22supposed to be focusing on today.
- 4:25And today is where I can actually take action.
- 4:29If I looked just directly at the master list or all the master lists
- 4:35that I have written down in various places, everything is yelling for
- 4:41equal attention at the same time.
- 4:44There's no distinction between what's urgent, what's important, what's
- 4:48optional, what was just a random thought I had or a good idea that I had that's
- 4:53really actually totally unrealistic
- 4:56The list has a lot of information, but really no direction.
- 5:01There's no filter there.
- 5:02It's not really helping me make a targeted, informed,
- 5:08intentional decision right now.
- 5:10And let me tell you, after managing a home, homeschooling five kids,
- 5:15writing books, I have learned that I rarely need to see a list
- 5:21of all that I could be doing.
- 5:24That's not helpful.
- 5:25I need to know what I need to do today, and I bet you're the same way.
- 5:31So if practical Christian homemaking without perfectionism and without
- 5:36overwhelm sounds like something that would help you, then please subscribe.
- 5:41I talk about managing home and family life with clarity, attention, and
- 5:45everyday faithfulness, spending less time reorganizing our lists
- 5:51and more time doing the real work
- 5:54If you like this daily card method that I'm going to explain today, you
- 5:58can actually dig deeper into this process and what it really looks like
- 6:03on the day-to-day in my free workshop, Overwhelmed to Organized: The One
- 6:09Practice That Changes Everything.
- 6:11You can sign up for that free on-demand workshop at simplyconvivial.com/organized,
- 6:17and the link is also in the episode notes
- 6:20So why does that long to-do list not really help in the day-to-day?
- 6:27The thing is, a list becomes overwhelming when you have to make
- 6:33decisions every time you look at it.
- 6:36A list is only helpful if it's pre-made decisions that you don't have to filter
- 6:44and renegotiate every time you look at it.
- 6:47But if your list contains more than is feasible in a day or more than is
- 6:52reasonable to do in, you know, the next few minutes, then you're going
- 7:00to be overwhelmed because you're not confronting yourself with what to do,
- 7:05you're confronting yourself with too many options and more decisions to make.
- 7:13What you want is a short list where you've already done the thinking
- 7:19and you know, like, well, it doesn't matter that these things need to
- 7:22be done because I've decided these three things are the most important.
- 7:26I'm gonna write those down Then when I look at my list, I'm not making
- 7:31a decision, I'm just reminding myself of a decision I've already
- 7:35made, and I'm taking action on it.
- 7:38Because in that moment is not the time to renegotiate or make a decision,
- 7:43it's just the time to do something.
- 7:46The list should say, "Here, do this," and it's very clear.
- 7:50This is why I love Post-it Notes for my daily card, because the small size reminds
- 7:57me that my day is actually quite small.
- 7:59I can't do everything.
- 8:01I can't keep track of everything.
- 8:04I need a short, concise, to-the-point list that helps me
- 8:08focus on what really matters today
- 8:11This isn't every item on my grocery list.
- 8:14This isn't big projects like plan the school year or organize the garage.
- 8:19It is something like make the dental appointments
- 8:22record an episode, homeschool.
- 8:26Those are the kind of things that land on my daily card
- 8:29What really works is when you can narrow down that next action to be something
- 8:37that will take only five to 10 minutes.
- 8:40My little rule of thumb is if what's on my daily card will take more than
- 8:4510 minutes, I mean, give or take.
- 8:47Recording this episode is gonna take longer, but it's still a very narrow
- 8:51chunk and a very deliberate, defined task.
- 8:56If it's something that's going to take half an hour or an hour or more,
- 9:01there's probably a project there.
- 9:03And just with homeschooling mom home life, we really don't have the project
- 9:10time that we like to think we do.
- 9:13And what I see over and over in myself and in other women in my community,
- 9:17Convivial Circle, is that we keep planning on doing projects in a day, but our
- 9:24life doesn't actually work that way.
- 9:28We don't have the time and the focus to complete a full project in a day.
- 9:34So we have to be content narrowing down our focus
- 9:38Making small baby step goals rather than big project goals
- 9:44So the card, the daily card works because it contains what the real priorities
- 9:50are today, and not just some random tasks that are mostly wishful thinking
- 9:56extras that I would like to fit in.
- 9:59The daily card really works best when it is what matters most right now.
- 10:04So this is why I use just a Post-it Note, maybe an index card, but this
- 10:10is even smaller, so I like it more.
- 10:12At the beginning of the day, I choose three priorities, write them down.
- 10:17But they're not just vague priorities, although there have been times where
- 10:21smile at the children actually does go on my list, because sometimes that's
- 10:27what I actually need to focus on doing.
- 10:29So this list, especially because it is focused on just today, allows me to be
- 10:37present today and recognize what matters to my family that I do or be today.
- 10:44That's what I need in front of my face.
- 10:46I don't need everything.
- 10:48I need what's in front of my face I need my priorities in front of my face.
- 10:54And that takes practice.
- 10:55It takes a lot of time actually to figure that out.
- 10:58It's not something that most women just wake up in the morning knowing.
- 11:03So if this sounds like it would be difficult to do, or, you know, you don't
- 11:09even know how to get there, to choose your priorities for the day, let me tell you,
- 11:13that long list isn't helping you either.
- 11:15So go do that free training from Overwhelmed to Organized at
- 11:19simplyconvivial.com/organized,
- 11:22because I talk there about how to discover those priorities
- 11:26and what goes on your card.
- 11:27And it really does take time and practice.
- 11:30It's something that doesn't necessarily make sense informationally until you
- 11:36start trying it out and practicing it.
- 11:39It's the doing of it where it really starts to click
- 11:43It really is difficult to choose only three things to go on your list, but
- 11:49recognizing that our time is limited and also recognizing that if we do the things
- 11:56that we really need to do today, like make that appointment, homeschool the kids
- 12:02recover the laundry disaster, then we actually have to
- 12:07count the day as a success.
- 12:09And so the daily card allows us to narrow down our focus and
- 12:13attention and recognize that we have done something important today.
- 12:19Because so often, like my temptation and the temptation I see again and
- 12:23again in Convivial Circle is that We focus on all that we haven't done.
- 12:28That big long list reminds us that there is so much more to do than there is
- 12:34time or energy, and so we end up saying that we've failed or saying we haven't
- 12:40done anything today when the reality is we did what was most important.
- 12:44We just maybe didn't do any extras.
- 12:46Maybe we didn't do what we hoped we would get to, but that's entirely different than
- 12:52actually doing what we need to be doing
- 12:55So pull out an index card, write down three things that matter most
- 13:00today, and do those without looking at all the things you could be doing.
- 13:06You don't need that list.
- 13:08You need a list of three, and I would love to unpack this more and
- 13:12get really dig into it with you.

- 13:22And tell me in the comments, what is your one top priority today?
- 13:27What are you gonna do today that matters most?
- 13:29These are the kinds of decisions that we need to make to really become more
- 13:33productive and cheerful in our homes.
- 13:37And it's one way that we repent, rejoice, repeat
