- 0:00Facts fade. Story's a stick.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1174 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Chad Smith, a great storyteller.
- 0:20Here's the upgrade. You think the truth lands
- 0:23hardest when you say it straight.
- 0:24But upgraded thinking knows the truth lands hardest when you let
- 0:26someone find it on their own. Here's the story.
- 0:31Stanley Kubrick, the famous Hollywood filmmaker of Spartacus
- 0:35and Doctor Strangelove, was once asked why he never made his
- 0:38movies more obvious. He was comfortable with
- 0:40audiences sitting in confusion for two hours when he could
- 0:43easily show what the scene meant.
- 0:45He said this quote If you really want to communicate something,
- 0:49even if it's just an emotion or an attitude, let alone an idea,
- 0:52the least effective and least enjoyable way is directly.
- 0:56It only goes in about an inch, but if you can get people to the
- 1:00point where they have to think a moment what it is you're getting
- 1:03AT and then discover it, the thrill of discovery goes right
- 1:06through the heart. In quote, long before Kubrick
- 1:10ever picked up a camera, a prophet named Nathan understood
- 1:14the same thing. King David had taken another
- 1:17man's wife, and then he had that man killed in battle to cover it
- 1:20up. Nathan had every right to walk
- 1:23into the palace and say it straight.
- 1:25David, you're an adulterer and murderer.
- 1:28Those are the facts, true facts, and they would have gone in
- 1:31about an inch. Instead, Nathan told David a
- 1:34story. A rich man with more sheep than
- 1:37he could count. A poor man with one little lamb,
- 1:40the only thing he owned, raised at his table like a daughter.
- 1:44A traveler shows up at the rich man's house and rather than take
- 1:48it from his own overflowing flock, the rich man takes the
- 1:51poor man's one little lamb and serves it to his guest for
- 1:55dinner. David didn't see himself in that
- 1:58story. He saw injustice.
- 2:00He stood up furious and said the rich man who did that deserves
- 2:04to die. That's when Nathan said 4 words.
- 2:08You are that man. The knife of discovery went
- 2:12through David's heart in a way no accusation ever could.
- 2:16Nathan didn't directly confront David with his guilt.
- 2:19Nathan used a story that made David convict himself.
- 2:24A man who would have gotten defensive against a fact instead
- 2:27broke down in front of a story. That's what a story does, that a
- 2:31fact never will. Facts fade.
- 2:34Facts fall short. A fact asks you to accept
- 2:38something from the outside, but there's something about a story
- 2:42that sticks. A story gets you to arrive at
- 2:45the truth from the inside, and once you've discovered it
- 2:48yourself, you own it. You can't.
- 2:50You can argue with a fact. It's a lot harder to argue with
- 2:54your own discovery. This doesn't just work on other
- 2:58people, it works on you. This is why these daily messages
- 3:02tell a story. I start by saying This is why
- 3:05being blunt doesn't work for you.
- 3:08But a comment from a filmmaker and a story from the Bible
- 3:11paints a picture that a principal alone never can.
- 3:14It's a truism that a picture is worth 1000 words.
- 3:18So the next time you're trying to talk yourself into or out of
- 3:22something true, quit reciting facts at yourself.
- 3:26Find the story that lets you discover it.
- 3:29The better story to tell yourself is I don't need to be
- 3:32told the truth, I need to discover it and then it's mine.
- 3:37Tell me a story of discovering a truth on your own that changed
- 3:40you to from chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 3:44what's a story that taught you something a fact never could.
