- 1:55Saint. Today's program is the Case of the Blonde Who Lost Her Head.
- 2:00The original air date November the thirteenth, nineteen forty nine, The Adventures of
- 2:25the Saint starring Vincent Price. The Saint, based on characters created by Leslie
- 2:38Charteriss and known to millions from books, magazines, and motion pictures. The
- 2:43Robinhood of Modern Crime now comes to radio, starring Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor
- 2:47Vincent Price as the Saint. Taxi Taxi one hundred Sutter. Please it's kind
- 3:02of light, an't it? Yes? It is comes this time a night.
- 3:07I figured guys should order forty five hundred Sutter. Please mind you.
- 3:13I don't like to get voice driver. Yeah. Of all the cabs in
- 3:17San Francisco, most of them operated by drivers who mind their own business.
- 3:22Why did I have to get your cab? Well? I like, who
- 3:24are you going to see at forty five hundred. My name is Simon Temper.
- 3:28I am six foot one inches star and I have a birthmark on my
- 3:30right shoulder blade. My income for last year I was all right, the
- 3:34waiting the question, I give up. I'm going to visit a man named
- 3:38Clarence Quiggly. Clarence Quiggly, Clarence Squiggly. You're going to see this alleged
- 3:46Clarence Quiggly. You've got a collection of paintings. I like to look at
- 3:51paintings. Maybe that will seem odd to you. But come come now,
- 3:54no temper now, I with your wife. You'd have to do better than
- 3:58that, you know. Oh so how much do I owe you? And
- 4:02go away? Would you think I was soaking you? If I suggested three
- 4:06bucks, I would as one man in the world or another. Let's make
- 4:14it three bucks anyway, let's just be yokels and make it fifty cents.
- 4:17Here you are well, I hey, hey, is that blonde giving you
- 4:21the eye on me? Blonde? Yeah, the one coming down the street
- 4:25towards us. Oh yeah, best best foot forward. I never saw her
- 4:28before in my life. Elsworth, I beg your pardon, but that's my
- 4:35neck. You've got your arms around this man named Clarence. Quickly, driver,
- 4:41stop heckling, miss whatever your name is. The way you're strengthening me
- 4:45is a pleasant way to be strangled. But dear, it sounds so cool.
- 4:49I'm not Ellsworth, Dear, I think I can honestly say I have
- 4:54never been Elsworth. Dear, you're not. No, I'm sorry I thought
- 4:59you were. Maybe I just hoped you were. Don't you know Ellsworth?
- 5:04Dear when you see him? No, I don't. I guess, But
- 5:09I saw you, and then the name came to me. So I who
- 5:13is Ellsworth? I don't know. Well, I suppose a certain amount of
- 5:16confusion about who or what Ellsworth is is understandable, you see. Not only
- 5:24don't I know who Ellsworth is? Yes, I don't even know who I
- 5:29am. Now what I want to know, in a general sort of way,
- 5:44is I'll miss the Clarence quickly? Is going to field? Driver?
- 5:46Would you mind concentrating on your driving? You know he's liable to be frustrated,
- 5:50like I'm taking you and a lady right back the way you started my
- 5:55apartment. Yes, because mss uh miss X needs help. I'm imposing on
- 6:00your mister Tim. Nonsense. The hour's late. You couldn't very well go
- 6:03wandering about the streets indefinitely, especially in that hat. Is anything wrong with
- 6:08my head? Not a thing? No, it's very charming, and the
- 6:12macket also it resembles a bird's home away from home. Well, mister,
- 6:16we have returned from where we went away. Good you're going to keep on
- 6:21being a yokele here this time only half a yokel. Well goodbye. You
- 6:29know where I'm going? No, I'm gonna like outside of Clarence quiggwis I
- 6:32think the night he's a fellow, needs a friend. I need to come
- 6:39along. Now, there you go, Now take your hat off, make
- 6:50yourself comfortable. I'm so afraid it's quiet. Now, let's take a look
- 6:58at your bag mm hm usual odds and ends and a compact initialed DM DM.
- 7:06Does that suggest anything? DM? No, it doesn't. Nothing means
- 7:13anything. All I remember is being outside an art gallery on Sutchy. You're
- 7:16well dressed, compacts, gold, no latch key, which means you probably
- 7:20don't live alone, which could also mean you've been missed. Yes, the
- 7:26police Missing Person's Bureau, the hello, Oh get me, inspector Murray.
- 7:30H thanks, I'll hold on. I hope maybe they know about Oh,
- 7:35what's the matter. I just touched the back of my head, terribly painful.
- 7:40Come here, Yeah, bruise the size of what I wish my bank
- 7:46account was. And there's the cause of your amnesia. Hello, Inspector Simon
- 7:50Templar, mm inspect that your language is deplorable, Inspector, I'm looking for
- 7:58someone to blind Inspector. No, no, well maybe, but not tonight
- 8:05at any rate. The girl I'm looking for is around twenty two years old,
- 8:07blonde hair, blue eyes, heightd five for three inches and thereabout wearing
- 8:13a street suit, brown white blouse with ruffles at the neck. And what
- 8:18oh oh, you're looking for it too, and names Dorothy Moore. Why
- 8:24do you want it? I see, and I guess you've got priority.
- 8:28Goodbye? They want me, yes, it seems because I've been reported missing
- 8:35partially that what else do they want me for? Murder? Here? Now,
- 8:50try another cup of coffee, Darthy, I guess we'll call you that
- 8:54unless we get evidence to the contrary. Dorothy Moore would fit the initials on
- 9:00your compa. You stay here and wait for me. Where are you going?
- 9:03From the information I've been able to get on the phone, you're guardian.
- 9:07A man named Matthew Shreiber was shot and killed earlier this evening. You
- 9:11disappeared. That's all the information in the public domain at the moment, I'm
- 9:15going to look for more at my house. Yes, or shouldn't you turn
- 9:18me over to the police. Well, actually, I don't really know that
- 9:22you are, Dorothy Moore. I'd like to know a little more about the
- 9:24murder itself before coming to any decisions. You want to help me, yes,
- 9:31I need help so, because you see, what's so terrible about it
- 9:35all is that I don't remember anything at all, so I can't even say
- 9:39I didn't murder anyone. Hello, Hello, Wow, it's been fun making
- 10:05you good bye. Now wait a minute, don't shut the door. Why
- 10:07not, I'm coming in all right. I hate to see him crying?
- 10:15But who are you? Simon Templar? An attractive name, much more distinguished
- 10:20than mine. Well, what's your name? Walter's not the most glamorous name
- 10:22in the world, But I'm a butler, so I bear up. Good.
- 10:26Where is everybody in the library? They're so well bred? Oh?
- 10:30Who is in the library? Missus Atkins, the housekeeper, the Cassandra of
- 10:33our day, gloomy lady prophesying disaster. Yes, and of course there's mister
- 10:37tins l a strange fellow who spends a good deal of his time sitting on
- 10:43small horses and hitting a large ball with a long wooden stick. A polo
- 10:46player. Doesn't matter what you call it, it's no job for a grown
- 10:50man. What's his relationship to miss Moore? Hat's not start prying? Shall
- 10:54we expound? Well? To preach your confidence. He's engaged to marry miss
- 10:58Moore, if and when she's and if she happens to be innocent of our
- 11:01guardian's assassination. Now anyone else in the library. No, no, no,
- 11:05mister Schreiber, dear departed's soul is detained elsewhere at the morgue. He
- 11:09was shot in the library. That's a bad place to be shirt usually fatal.
- 11:15I suppose you take me to the library, can we? Why did
- 11:18the police suspect miss Moore because of me? You see, I told him
- 11:20that I heard shots in the house. I left my quarters on the gallop
- 11:24ran towards the library. Just before I got there, the door opened and
- 11:26miss Dorothy ran out, ran down the hall and out the front door.
- 11:31Is that true, my dear mister Templer. If not what I have told
- 11:33the police, Otherwise I don't know. Besides, it isn't good form to
- 11:39suspect, the butler, the library, surfac missus Atkins, mister Tinsley,
- 11:46mister Temple, what do you want? I'm looking for miss Moore? So
- 11:52young men are the police? Why a guardian was murdered? All his money
- 11:58goes to her and she disappeared. Perhaps she didn't murder mister Shriver. But
- 12:05you wouldn't bet on it, prepserve? Did I hated him? Perhaps,
- 12:11mister Tinsley there did not. Now look here isn't he priceless? Now look
- 12:16here such a typical phrase, So typical. I wonder if he can really
- 12:22be so stupid. I love Dorothy, and no one ask questioned that.
- 12:28But what is it about her that you love? The money she was to
- 12:31get when mister Shriver died, The money you wouldn't have got if you'd married
- 12:37Dorothy against mister Striver's wish. Mister Shriver didn't approve of the marriage. He
- 12:43well, he hesitated about it, but we were working on it and then
- 12:48became impatient. Now look here, you wouldn't again, I resent that?
- 12:52Good is now on record that you resented? How about Walters? W Yes?
- 12:58What motive would he have that makes you think he has one? One
- 13:01the hopeful type. Walters is a man with a criminal past. Whether or
- 13:07not he got tired of his upright life here, I cannot say it wouldn't
- 13:11surprise you. What may surprise both of you, however, is an odd
- 13:16fact. Dorothy Moore is suffering from total amnesia amnesia. What are you made?
- 13:20Do you remember nothing of her past? Herself, neither name nor habitation.
- 13:26Oh horrible, how convenient? Wait a minute, how do you know
- 13:30that I get around? Well, then you must know where she is.
- 13:33You've got to tell me, mister Tinsley is now being the ardent lover.
- 13:37I can't tell you why. Well, whoever shot Schreiber? There's very little
- 13:41doubt that Dorothy saw the killer, but Dorothy doesn't remember. The killer therefore
- 13:46would have an urgent interest in getting hold of Dorothy before she did remember,
- 13:50and making sure that she would never remember anything again. Well, good night
- 13:54you lovely people. Mh dithy Dorothy, Dorothy Dorothy? H Oh you again,
- 14:48it's me again? Did you like to play so much the first time?
- 14:50Where's Dorothy? It's more? Yes? Did she come back here?
- 14:54Stay somewhere? She was at my apartment when I got there, she was
- 14:58gone. She did come back here? She didn't ring, Let's find out.
- 15:03Tinsley and Missus Atkins still around. Missus Atkins has gone up to bed.
- 15:05I think. As for mister Tinsley, I imagine he's something the whiskey.
- 15:09I we'll find out. Tinsley. Oh it's you. Yes' where's Dorothy?
- 15:16You're the one who knows. I'm the one who knew? Did she
- 15:18come back here? I haven't seen her? Well? There is where's missus
- 15:22Atkins's room? Way, sir? I come along, Kinsley and like both
- 15:26of you in sight. If you insist, Missus Atkins will not be pleased
- 15:33at having a sleep interrupted. I'm not pleased either. This is her room,
- 15:37sir. Thanks. Oh, girl must be asleep, and then we
- 15:46must wake her up. She's a very sound sleeper. And then we'll go
- 15:52in and wake her. Wow, how do you like that Missus Atkins strung
- 15:58up to a beam. Anyone got a knife? Yes, yes, here
- 16:03you are. Now we'll cut the rope and get her down there. That's
- 16:11that she did. She's dead. Cool girl. Although you know something.
- 16:18She must have killed the old man Schreiber. I mean then she committed suicide
- 16:22in remorse. I mean Heaven's sakes, Templar, stop playing with that rope.
- 16:26This is a very interesting rope, is it? Why? Because it
- 16:30proves you see that she didn't commit suicide she was murdered. Yes, Inspector
- 16:51Marian, I understand you don't think that Missus Atkins committed suicide. I know
- 16:55she didn't. Well, while the boys are playing her fingerprints and stuff,
- 16:57would you mind explaining to you a poor benighted member of the lower intellectual classes,
- 17:03I mean a cop like now, Murray, now stopped pulling my leg.
- 17:06You're one of the brainiest men I know. And why do you always
- 17:08beat me to a case? Oh? I'm prettier now about this alleged phony
- 17:14sewers, take a look at the rope with which Missus Atkins is supposed to
- 17:17have hanged herself. Oh, I see the rope was thrown over the beam
- 17:21there. I'm afraid you're right, Temper. It wasn't hard to spot.
- 17:26Her weight would have pulled the rope sharply down over the beam. The fibers
- 17:30of the rope therefore should have slanted upward instead of which they slammed down,
- 17:33indicating that somebody put the rope around missus Atkins's neck and then hauled her up.
- 17:38We were supposed to think that missus Atkins committed suicide as a compression of
- 17:41guilt, which leaves us where in the shribe of home. I'm more interested
- 17:45in where the girl is drothy Moore? Uh huh? Why because I have
- 17:49many coming through the door. I'm not sure, Simon, Hello Dorothy,
- 17:56I don't know exactly how I got here. I don't recognize the plice at
- 18:00all yet I should shouldn't. Yes, you should miss more because this is
- 18:04where you live, and I'm afraid you're not going to stay very long.
- 18:08What do you mean I'm placing you under arrest. I'm suspicion of murder.
- 18:27You know I love police headquarters. There's so romantic, Mary. How are
- 18:33you going to prove anything against that girl that she's suffering total amnesia by proving
- 18:37that amnesia is a fake? Oh? How I haven't any coming over here
- 18:41to look at one of our guests. I'll have him seen this more too.
- 18:45He's due any minute. I'll go get the girl now, I wonder
- 18:52to the other door. Come in, Hello, Well you're not Murray.
- 18:56I was supposed to you dollar, of course, what's the matter with you?
- 19:02What are you complaining? But I'm come. We've got to get to
- 19:04the bottom of these things, don't we. I suppose that when you were
- 19:07a little boy, what did you want most of all to be a big
- 19:11boy? Are you afraid of the dog? No, No, you're not
- 19:15afraid because you have little friends who come to you in the dock. Perhaps,
- 19:19eh, No, Now why are you afraid of the dog? Oh
- 19:23it's a long, long story, and you know you don't look at all.
- 19:29Well, well, I don't feel so good either. No, you
- 19:32should see a doctor. Thank you, thank you, I think I will.
- 19:37Hey, goodbye. Oh trembler, Yeah, you're alienist was here,
- 19:45Mary, but he left Alienists when I just phoned him and told him not
- 19:48to come. The district attorney wouldn't hold the girl in sufficient evidence and ballistics
- 19:52and ran a paraffine tests, no proof, but she'd fired a gun.
- 19:56But the man who was just in here, doll, I think his name
- 19:59was, he's not the alienist. He's the guy the alienist was coming to
- 20:03examine. He's nuts. Oh, dear, well, I guess you're happy
- 20:07now that we can't hold the girl. No, no, because while you
- 20:11were holding her, things were safe now, Mary, let's go visit,
- 20:17no visit where the Scriber house a house where two people have died, a
- 20:21house very convenient murder. Yes, eyes, no eyes, Walters, we're
- 20:45coming in, Yes, sir Darthy's home. Yes, sir, she got
- 20:52here when ten minutes ago? Perhaps, well we'll go to the library.
- 20:55Yes, she got here ten minutes ago. And then she sat in this
- 21:00room for a few minutes, made a phone call and went up to bed.
- 21:04I had to found you, mister Temple. I'll wake her up and
- 21:07get her down here. Hold on Tinsley around in the guest room playing solitaire,
- 21:11ofughing, get him down here too. That are we? And Walters?
- 21:15You come back too? Sure having fun temper. I don't care very
- 21:22much for this stage of any case. But what are you doing with that
- 21:25telephone? Hiding it under the couch? Here? Are you being subtle again
- 21:29again? Ah? You flatter me? Hello, Dorothy, Sorry to have
- 21:34had you waked, But I wasn't asleep. I was trying to remember.
- 21:38You will if you get the chance. Tinsley's here in the house, isn't
- 21:41he? Yes? He is? I haven't sake is a man never get
- 21:44any peace, you know, inspector marry mister Tinsley. Oh yes, the
- 21:48policeman, get off your polo pony, and where's Walters? Now on his
- 21:52way to Canada? I imagine Dorothy get on the phone right away? The
- 21:56phone? Yes, oh, there doesn't seem to be one in here,
- 22:00perhaps in the next room. Why do you want me to fall? I
- 22:03don't what you say. Didn't they used to be a phone in this room?
- 22:07I don't know. I don't remember. Oh yes, yes, your
- 22:11amnesia. But you remember everything that happened since the blow on your head,
- 22:14don't you. But then, equally, of course, since you were in
- 22:17this room a very little while ago, and since you you used a phone
- 22:21in here, you should have remembered that. Why didn't you well, I
- 22:25don't know, slip my mind. No, Darth, they didn't slip your
- 22:27mind. You were merely being over careful. What does that mean? It
- 22:33means that you are not now nor ever were suffering from amnesia. Why should
- 22:37I pretend to have amnesia? Because you killed your uncle, you knew you'd
- 22:41need something to help you out in court, so you wandered about until you
- 22:45found someone on whom you could try out your amnesia. That happened to be
- 22:48me. You're just saying those things without proof. Besides, there was a
- 22:52paraphin test. It indicates merely that you wore gloves when you shot your uncle.
- 22:56It indicates I might have worn them if i'd shot him. You can't
- 23:00prove I did. I can prove your amnesia was phony that along with some
- 23:03other things. How can you prove it? Very simple? Your hat.
- 23:07When you arrived at my apartment, you took your hat off, discovered a
- 23:11large bruise on the back of your head. That was to supply applausible reason
- 23:15for your amnesia. But Dorothy, as I remarked to the cab driver at
- 23:18the time, your hat was immaculate, untouched. You're asking us to believe
- 23:25that the killer knocked you out and then carefully put your hat back on your
- 23:27head again, not asking you to believe anything. I'm going what a charming
- 23:30revolver, the one you used on your uncle. It still has bullets in
- 23:34it, So don't try to stop me, Dorothy. You didn't ask me
- 23:37how I could be so sure the killer hadn't done that business with your hat.
- 23:41I don't care. I'm so sure because of Walter's statement. Remember he
- 23:45saw you rush out immediately after the shots. All right, you're smart,
- 23:48but you'll never stop me. Perhaps not, but Walters, who's right behind
- 23:52you, well, or you can't pull me. It wasn't trying to Miss
- 23:55Dorothy. I'd better you know, gentlemen, you knocked Miss Moore out with
- 24:07a bottle, Yes, sir, But but you said you were going to
- 24:10can misunderstood me, Sir. I merely said I was going to get some
- 24:12Canada dry. Now the bottle's ruined. That's too bad. Oh, never
- 24:18mind, wald there's no harm done. Inspect Mary. You'll take this more
- 24:22and I'll take an old fashioned. You have been listening to another adventure of
- 24:37the Saint the robin Hood of modern Crime, and I'll hear us our starved

- 26:14the mutual broadcasting system. Welcome back, a good clue regarding the fake and
- 26:44just some great witty dialogue. I love the let's just be Ycal's part now.
- 26:51Recently I conducted a poll on Facebook asking people which was their favorite program
- 26:57in one hundred and ninety the six that we're doing which they enjoy the most,
- 27:03and one hundred and ninety three people participated and the answers perhaps not too
- 27:10surprising. Johnny Doller came in first with sixty five percent, followed by the
- 27:15Adventures of Philip Marlowe with thirteen percent. The Saint and Dragnet were tied for
- 27:22third place with eight percent, Nick Carter five percent, and Easy Money one
- 27:30percent, which, in one way I guess is good because only one person's
- 27:34losing a favorite as we'll be wrapping that series up. But thanks so much
- 27:38to everyone who participated. I won't read through all the comments on the thread
- 27:45about the vote. There are some good ones. I appreciate everyone who commented,
- 27:51but Kate commented regarding episode thirteen eighty nine, says, yours truly,
- 27:56Johnner is great, but I had to go with the Saint when I took
- 27:59the listening. Now, while I do my chores well, thanks so much
- 28:03again to everyone who voted, and that will actually do it for today.
- 28:11We'll be back tomorrow with Easy Money and coming next Tuesday, Crime in Peter
- 28:18Chambers, and then of course next Monday, join us for the Saint.
- 28:22In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net.
