- 0:23Speaks of stories so far fall into the new Castle rock out for Wayward Kings
- 0:30riding the crest of a wave at the moment, having just released their new
- 0:34EP, Another Life Another Time. The band has also recently signed with Ex
- 0:38Music, So things are definitely happening. And to fill us in more on
- 0:42that, let's speak to front man Ryan, Thank you man, no worry.
- 0:47So the Wayward Kings releasing u EP Another Life Another Time, I just
- 0:51said with a bird. So how you feel about it, bros? It
- 0:54is it still nerve bracks from this day and age putting some down. Man.
- 0:59Look, I'm actually I'm pretty comfortable with it. Even even some of
- 1:03the releases will done in the past I've been comfortable with and I think there's
- 1:08always going to be a time where you know, people are going to judge
- 1:11you or they're going to hate it all, you know. And actually had
- 1:15a conversation with a good mate of mind the other day. He's just like
- 1:19like a lap and I'm like, that's that's awesome feedback, you know what
- 1:23I mean? Because we're not out there to please everybody. Mattie matt Salmons
- 1:27and I pretty much you know, a brains trust the way we're Kings as
- 1:32such. You know, we've played together and wrote together, and we come
- 1:37up with a lat being you know, a bit of a rock tune that
- 1:41can sort of be consumed on different levels, and you know what I mean.
- 1:45So, but I think it's it's good to have people in your corner
- 1:49that go ship mate or it's fucking awesome because they're the people that you know,
- 1:53you really listen to. The more and more stuff and put out,
- 2:00you know, the more I hope people have negative and positive feelings about,
- 2:04you know what I mean. So you're still smiler when you're talking about negatives
- 2:07made. So that's a good thing. Yeah, you got to you know
- 2:13what I mean. Things might not always go to plan, but you've got
- 2:15to have a good time. Do I agree? That tell us a me
- 2:20more about the EP from a musical point of view and what you're going for.
- 2:25I think for this EVP, originally there was about seven tracks that we
- 2:31were going to put onto the EP, and the whole goal, the sound
- 2:37and what we wanted to sort of release was wayard. Kings are very much
- 2:42a live band, and I think in the past I've always struggled trying to
- 2:46catch that essence of you know, a vocal performance or a breakdown or you
- 2:53know something that hits you when you see a band live. That's sometimes hard
- 2:55to put on an album. And I think goal was just to have listeners
- 3:02be able to hear what we sound like live, you know, and you
- 3:08know where I'm very, very lucky to have the three of the guys in
- 3:13my band that the rhythm section is just tires of Fisher's ass and Nick Bookie
- 3:21on drums, Jamie Hill on bass, the that just you know, if
- 3:24you ever get a chance to see this man, you'll know what I'm talking
- 3:28about. They're both just incredible. So every recordings were done to a click
- 3:37and there's been minimal shift with anything, so we've still created that live sound.
- 3:43And look, I think the vocal performance across turned out The Gods,
- 3:47which is the middle track, and the real You I think they were done
- 3:52in like. I think we took the first take right through both of them
- 3:57and it was yeah, you know, that in itself gave it a real
- 4:02live vibe as well, because there wasn't some stopping and starting and we'll do
- 4:06this first and we'll come back to it. You know. I walked in
- 4:09there and said let's do it. I tracked the first one and I said
- 4:13to Lee, Rolf did our engineering? I said, did you record it?
- 4:15You know? And he's like, mate, I always record. So
- 4:20that was pretty much burned down the gods. It was the first track we
- 4:24did, and I'm pretty certain that's that first whole take, give or take
- 4:28some bitterly bits, but you know that that's a good example of what we
- 4:32are alive, and I think that was what we're trying to go for.
- 4:39Now. She's only a three track EP, like you said, mate,
- 4:41so we've got time to go through each song track by track and you can
- 4:44tell us a bit more about it. So we'll start with a lad YEP.
- 4:49So a lot, like I said, was written as a rough song,
- 4:56a rough tune thing that can be sort of digested across not necessarily you're
- 5:04heavier sort of fans, but it's something that still sits in the in the
- 5:09Wayward King genre as just a you know, just a bang and track.
- 5:15Maddie come up with an intro for it about eighteen months ago, I think,
- 5:21and I remember he showed it to me and I'm like, that's just
- 5:24a really wicked hook, you know. The guitar hook, and we went
- 5:29through a couple of different changes with it. We actually, Maddie and I
- 5:32did a lot of the pre production, and we got to the end of
- 5:34it where like, fuck, man, this song is awesome. You know,
- 5:39it is just awesome, and we were both chaff going, it's a
- 5:42fucking hit. It's a hit you and we sent it through the rye and
- 5:47he goes, it's an absolute coster fuck you know. You know, once
- 5:59you play, can listen to it for fucking hours, you know, looking
- 6:04I think that when we ended up with that track anyway, he goes,
- 6:10you've got two courses in the song. Yeah, but it's just keeps goat.
- 6:14He goes, get rid of that. We moved down to the second
- 6:18song on the album, which is burned Down the Gods. Yeah, burn
- 6:25down the Gods. I am this song, or not not necessarily this song.
- 6:30But like I said, Maddie and I have been writing together for a
- 6:32long time and he come up with this hook, another guitar hook, and
- 6:40at the time we had nothing with it. We had no lyrics, we
- 6:44had no structure. It was literally just a hook and some you know,
- 6:47some pretty fucking boring chords or something. You know, it was a real
- 6:53inception of the of the songs. Anyway, I've always loved that guitar hook,
- 7:00like it's it's probably one of my favorite guitar hooks in you know,
- 7:04a lot of our stuff. Anyway, I come up with some a narrative
- 7:10around, you know, burn down the Gods, which I guess to me
- 7:14is like it's the establishment thing, you know, fuck the establishment, burned
- 7:19down the gods. You know, I'm going to make my own destiny sort
- 7:25of track. And that was one that we did in pre production. That
- 7:29was like four and a half five minutes, you know, and during crew
- 7:32production we worked with a good mate of Burserlon that helped us with a lot
- 7:36of the just the production side of things, and it was a real great
- 7:41help. Anyway, we cut that song into like two minutes forty now and
- 7:45it's literally start finish, you know, and it just doesn't let up.
- 7:51And yeah, that's that's one of my favorite tracks at the moment. Anyway,
- 7:56It's probably because it's the newest that we've been working on. You know.
- 8:01I put it up with The Real You. It sounds like a love
- 8:03song man, the Real You. So did you get a chance to listen
- 8:09to that one yet I got halfway through it before I had the ringer,
- 8:11but I was digging it cool. No, no, no, that's all
- 8:15good man. Yeah, look the real you. It can be taken from
- 8:18many perspectives, man, you know, I see it as looking into somebody,
- 8:28whether or not you're in a relationship with them or you know, but
- 8:33coming up with you never get a chance to see the real person, you
- 8:37know. And like I said, songs can be interpreted in many different ways,
- 8:43you know, but look deep down, Yeah, potentially a love song,
- 8:48but it's also it's got some wicked parts in it, many some wicked
- 8:56parts in it. So I can listen to more of a bit where we
- 9:03play it live. Man, the breakdown of the middle can just it just
- 9:07yeah, it's so airy yet so tight, and some of the rhythms in
- 9:13there as well made it just like I said, it's just a To me,
- 9:16it's just a fucking good old rock track. All of those songs are
- 9:20you know. That's actually the overwhelming feeling I got listening to it. Was
- 9:24just a good old school as you rock. Yeah. Yeah, and mate,
- 9:30we're super excited for it to actually be launched because a lot of our
- 9:33fans unless they've come to some shows, they wouldn't have heard a lot of
- 9:37these tracks. And it is a different sound compared to our debut one that
- 9:43we actually set up. So yeah, yeah, right, all right,
- 9:52yeah, And I noticed there's no song on the EP chord another Life and
- 9:54other Times, So I'm guessing that the title it's got a bit of a
- 9:58deeper meaning. Sorry mate, Another Life Another Time is actually the first track
- 10:07on that album if you just only used the first letters. So a LAT
- 10:13is Another Life, Another Time. And I've always had trouble trying to come
- 10:20up with EP names and you know, song titles and stuff that just don't
- 10:24sound you know, they just sounds ship or they're you know, their corny,
- 10:28you know. And it's really funny that because they're the last lyrics in
- 10:35a LAT as well another Life, Another Time or like just before the ending.
- 10:41And I just felt like, you know, the film clip that we
- 10:45did for a LAT was shot in Rogue Scholar up here in Newcastle. We
- 10:50got in there for a full day and did the film clip for it and
- 10:54the EP cover and the album. Sorry, the EP jacket has got all
- 11:01of the photos from the film clip, you know, and it just seemed
- 11:07like a really fitting piece to name that EP Another Life, Another Time,
- 11:11And to be honest, I'm pretty proud of it that I decided to do
- 11:15that. Yeah, you know, because it's it's you know, I think
- 11:20it it's just it's it's perfect for it. Man. You know, I
- 11:24suppose you can't really call every release self titled? Can you go five albums
- 11:31out all called self titled? Well, mate, I had I had nothing
- 11:35for the last two singles we released as a you know, I dropped two
- 11:41tracks into the one release and I just called it the B sides because I
- 11:46think that's a little bit unimaginative when I looked at it, to be honest,
- 11:48I know, I'm like, Fuck, we've got to We've got to
- 11:50come up with something. Someone say something, you know. I think it
- 11:56was when I was typing it into the you know, the DSP to push
- 12:00Okay, I'm like, what do we need to call this? All right?
- 12:03The B sides? It'll do? Yeah. They And the other thing
- 12:09about importance is happened with the way with Kings this year, bro, as
- 12:13you're signing to X and Music, which is the new music label made like,
- 12:16tell us about that and what the sort of things that opens up to
- 12:18the band. Man, well, it's fucking amazing, to be honest,
- 12:26you know, like it's something that every musician sort of dreams of to get
- 12:31an opportunity like that, and it's sort of only read its head in the
- 12:37last couple of months through some conversations about you know who Way with Kings are,
- 12:41what do we want to do? Where do we want to go?
- 12:43And you know, in the back of my mind, I've always seen Way
- 12:48with Kings is being I'd like to call it a household name, but you
- 12:52know what I mean, it's not. It's not that it's it's it's a
- 12:54band that has an awesome network around them that can actually get them to great
- 13:01stages, to get them to you know, a bunch of new listeners.
- 13:03And you know, in today's market, mate, you can have the best
- 13:07tracks, you could have the best outfit, you know, unless you find
- 13:09those channels that allows you to get to those places. Man, it never
- 13:13fucking happens. And I said to Maddie, you know, I said,
- 13:18man, it's really up to the universe now, man, you know what
- 13:22I mean, We've got an actual label that is going to work with us
- 13:30and get us to where we need to be. And you know, I
- 13:33honestly think it just really it all comes down to if the songs are going
- 13:37to hold the water, you know what I mean, if they've got the
- 13:39weight to carry us to that next level. Because you know, having the
- 13:43meeting with ex Music, you know we've got a really good platform man to
- 13:48take that Australia wide and overseas, you know. And I think the label
- 13:54is a glamorous sort of you know, not sh on our belts or on
- 13:58our hats, you know. But I think in the essence of it,
- 14:01man, it's it's practically we're on a world stage, man, you know
- 14:07what I mean. No matter where that goes or what that is, it's
- 14:09sort of like we've opened the door, you know, turn the key in
- 14:13the lock, and we're standing there in our undies. Like my head was
- 14:20going into a beautiful place like that, and it just oh, well,
- 14:26mate, when we're standing in our undies in some hotel room at four o'clock
- 14:30in the morning, mate, we'll remember this conversation. There'll be gold painted
- 14:33undies by then. Eat some stories so far on a two family of the
- 15:03family that's God no direction of them too full shee's down to the devil.
- 15:09So the devil take jobs you see as easy gas stated at the stars from
- 15:13a god that stool their parts part of bother Ham and feeds too much part
- 15:18of other gods. The Brothers got a good burn down those guys, Burn
- 15:28down those hells, Burn down those guys, and watch shoot come and here
- 15:37at it. It's a little better full shoot the ship because the ship feels
- 15:41different as hell. Bother hand, the seat stupid, be the hell bather
- 15:46hair the seat stupid. Look at you and you're in my house. Look
- 15:52at you and you're in my house. Look at you anything crazy? B
