Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Battle for Senate in North Carolina heats up
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Some voting groups are hard to quantify. Polls can be off,
- 0:03Speaker 1: sometimes wildly so. Some polling actually seems designed to suppress turnout,
- 0:09Speaker 1: to discourage you from showing up. North Carolina currently has
- 0:14Speaker 1: two Republican senators, but Tom Tillis is not seeking reelection.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Control of the U.S. Senate could literally come down to
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Tar Heel state. Michael Wiley is the Republican candidate
- 0:26Speaker 1: and joins us now. Welcome, Mr.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Wiley.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us. Roy Cooper has been a
- 0:30Speaker 1: tough out in the past. How do you plan to
- 0:33Speaker 1: change that? Well, what we're going to do is talk
- 0:37Speaker 1: to the voters in North Carolina and make sure that
- 0:39Speaker 1: they understand Roy Cooper was the worst governor in the
- 0:42Speaker 1: history of North Carolina. He made things cost more. He
- 0:45Speaker 1: drove up electricity prices, housing prices, health care costs, and
- 0:49Speaker 1: has always fought for higher taxes. And he released thousands
- 0:52Speaker 1: upon thousands of criminals back into our communities and put
- 0:56Speaker 1: our kids and our communities at risk. All right. I
- 1:00Speaker 1: want us to listen to Roy Cooper. Somehow or another,
- 1:03Speaker 1: he thinks he knows how why you are running. And
- 1:06Speaker 1: then I'll ask you about it when he's done.
- 1:10Speaker 2: When he was asked about why he ran for the Senate,
- 1:14Speaker 2: his answer was because the president asked me to. Not
- 1:19Speaker 2: because I want to help people, not because I want
- 1:22Speaker 2: to serve my state or country, because one person asked
- 1:26Speaker 2: him to do it. This you can take to the bank.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Michael Whatley is going to do and say whatever this
- 1:34Speaker 2: president tells him to do and say, regardless of whether
- 1:38Speaker 2: it's good for the people of North Carolina.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Hey, Michael, here's what I don't understand. If you win,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you get a six-year term. Donald Trump has two more years.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I don't understand Roy Cooper's math. If you win, you
- 1:51Speaker 1: will be in D.C. longer than President Trump. You'll have
- 1:54Speaker 1: four years where he's not there. So how in the
- 1:57Speaker 1: world are you going to listen to somebody who's not there? Yeah, look,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm honored to be endorsed by President Trump. But the
- 2:03Speaker 1: reason that I'm running for Senate is because I want
- 2:06Speaker 1: every kid and every grandkid in North Carolina to be
- 2:10Speaker 1: able to live the American dream, just like I have
- 2:13Speaker 1: here in North Carolina. I want to make sure that
- 2:15Speaker 1: we have a strong economy where people can make more
- 2:18Speaker 1: and keep more of their own money. And I want
- 2:20Speaker 1: to have safe communities. And I want to make sure
- 2:23Speaker 1: that America is going to be the strongest, most respected
- 2:26Speaker 1: nation again around the world. All right, from what I
- 2:29Speaker 1: remember about North Carolina, you've got to do well in
- 2:32Speaker 1: western North Carolina. You've kind of got to offset the
- 2:35Speaker 1: research triangle. Do you have the resources, and what is
- 2:38Speaker 1: your get-out-the-vote plan in the Tar Heel State? Yeah, we'll
- 2:43Speaker 1: absolutely have the resources to get our message out to
- 2:45Speaker 1: everybody in North Carolina. You know, it's very important to
- 2:48Speaker 1: note that if money were the only factor in these
- 2:52Speaker 1: types of races, President Trump would not be in the
- 2:54Speaker 1: White House and neither Ted Budd nor Tom Tillis would
- 2:57Speaker 1: be in the United States Senate today. We have been
- 3:00Speaker 1: to all 100 counties. I have talked to people in
- 3:02Speaker 1: the coast and the mountains. I've talked to people in
- 3:05Speaker 1: the cities. And I've talked to people on the farms.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And everybody here wants a fighter. They know that Roy
- 3:10Speaker 1: Cooper is going to fight for criminals. He's going to
- 3:12Speaker 1: fight for illegal aliens. He's going to fight for a
- 3:15Speaker 1: radical trans agenda that wants to see boys and girls
- 3:18Speaker 1: sports and men and women's locker rooms. And they know
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm going to fight for our kids. I'm going to
- 3:23Speaker 1: fight for our families, our communities. And I'm going to
- 3:25Speaker 1: fight to make sure that we are going to be
- 3:28Speaker 1: a strong, safe, secure state here in North Carolina and country. Well, Michael,
- 3:34Speaker 1: before I let you go, our cousins to the north,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I suspect, have the same view of public safety that
- 3:40Speaker 1: we do in South Carolina. I'm really interested in who
- 3:44Speaker 1: and why he let people or commute sentences, let folks
- 3:47Speaker 1: out of jail. When you said that, it got my attention.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Who in particular should we be paying attention to on
- 3:54Speaker 1: this commutation or pardons? Well, Roy Cooper let 4,200 hardened
- 4:00Speaker 1: criminals out of North Carolina prisons, the worst of the worst,
- 4:03Speaker 1: rapists and pedophiles and murderers, because he did not want
- 4:07Speaker 1: them to get COVID. He felt sorry that they might
- 4:09Speaker 1: get sick while they were in prison and put them
- 4:11Speaker 1: back into our communities. The most famous guy on that list,
- 4:14Speaker 1: DeCarlos Brown Jr., who was rearrested and re-released 13 additional times,
- 4:19Speaker 1: 14 total, before he got on a light rail car
- 4:22Speaker 1: last summer and brutally murdered a beautiful Ukrainian refugee named
- 4:26Speaker 1: Irena Zorotskaya. in cold blood. That monster should have never
- 4:29Speaker 1: been on the streets of North Carolina. He should have
- 4:31Speaker 1: never been on that light rail car. Irena Zarotska should
- 4:34Speaker 1: be alive today. And her blood is on Roy Cooper's hands,
- 4:38Speaker 1: along with thousands of other victims from across the state
- 4:42Speaker 1: from the crimes that he put back on the street,
- 4:47Speaker 1: 25 additional murders that were committed because Roy Cooper couldn't
- 4:51Speaker 1: stand the thought of people getting COVID in prisons. Boy,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I bet that young woman on the rail car would
- 4:58Speaker 1: give anything in the world to have COVID instead of
- 5:00Speaker 1: what she got on that rail car. Michael Whatley, thank
- 5:04Speaker 1: you so much for joining us on a Sunday night.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We'll see you soon. Thank you, Trey.
