- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:14It's Thursday, it's the 14th of August, and it's great to have
- 0:19your company as you and I are going to continue reading
- 0:22through this remarkable story from the book of Acts, the Acts
- 0:26of the Apostles. That's the way cooler title and
- 0:29just act. And today is the day where we
- 0:31hear one of the most effective sermons ever preached.
- 0:35And if you have preached and you reflect on Peter's sermon that
- 0:38he preaches here in Acts chapter 2, and you think, boy, I wish
- 0:42when I preached 3000 people would just turn their backs on
- 0:47their lives and follow Jesus. Yes, this has to be the greatest
- 0:50example of preaching in the world where they start thinking
- 0:53he's drunk and they end up giving their lives to Jesus.
- 0:56I think that's fantastic. So, friends, let us read
- 0:59together this story of the Holy Spirit coming to His disciples,
- 1:04to His apostles, and beginning this work of growing the church
- 1:07captured here in Acts chapter 2. On the day of Pentecost, all the
- 1:22believers were meeting together in one place.
- 1:24Suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a
- 1:29mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were
- 1:32sitting. Then what looked like flames or
- 1:35tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them, and
- 1:39everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began
- 1:43speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this
- 1:46ability. At that time there were devout
- 1:49Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
- 1:52When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running and they
- 1:56were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by
- 1:59the believers. They were completely amazed.
- 2:02How can this be? They exclaimed.
- 2:05These people are all from Galilee and yet we hear them
- 2:09speaking in our own native languages.
- 2:11Here we are Parthians, Medes, Alamites, people from
- 2:16Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontius, the province of Asia,
- 2:21Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and the areas of Libya around
- 2:26Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism,
- 2:32Cretans and Arabs. And we all hear these people
- 2:36speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God
- 2:39has done. They stood there amazed and
- 2:43perplexed. What can this mean?
- 2:46They asked each other. But others in the crowd
- 2:48ridiculed them, saying they're just drunk, that's all.
- 2:53Then Peter stepped forward with the 11 other apostles and
- 2:56shouted to the crowd. Listen carefully, all of you,
- 3:00fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem.
- 3:03Make no mistake about this. These people are not drunk as
- 3:07some of you are assuming. 9:00 in the morning is much too early
- 3:10for that. No, what you see was predicted
- 3:14long ago by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God says, I
- 3:19will pour out my spirit upon all people.
- 3:22Your sons and daughters will prophecy, Your young men will
- 3:26see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
- 3:30In those days I will pour out my spirit even on my servants, men
- 3:34and women alike, and they will prophecy.
- 3:37And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the
- 3:41earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
- 3:46The sun will become dark and the moon will turn blood red before
- 3:51that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
- 3:54But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 4:00People of Israel, listen. God publicly endorsed Jesus the
- 4:04Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs
- 4:09through him, as you well know. But God knew what would happen,
- 4:14and his prearranged plan was carried out.
- 4:17When Jesus was betrayed with the help of lawless Gentiles, you
- 4:21nailed him to a cross and killed him.
- 4:23But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him
- 4:27back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
- 4:32King David said this about him. I see that the Lord is always
- 4:36with me. I will not be shaken, for He is
- 4:39right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad and
- 4:43my tongue shouts his praises. My body rests in hope, for you
- 4:47will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy 1 to rot
- 4:52in the grave. You have shown me the way of
- 4:55life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.
- 4:59Dear brothers, think about this. You can be sure that the
- 5:02Patriarch David wasn't referring to himself, for he died and was
- 5:06buried, and his tomb is still here among us.
- 5:10But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an
- 5:14oath that one of David's own descendants would sit on his
- 5:17throne. David was looking into the
- 5:20future and Speaking of the Messiah's resurrection.
- 5:23He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or
- 5:27allow his body to rot in the grave.
- 5:29God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this
- 5:35now. He is exalted to the place of
- 5:37highest honour in heaven at God's right hand.
- 5:41And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy
- 5:45Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear to day.
- 5:51For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, the
- 5:55Lord said to my Lord, sit in the place of honour at my right
- 6:00hand, until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool
- 6:03under your feet. So let everyone in Israel know
- 6:08for certain that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified to
- 6:14be both Lord and Messiah. Peter's words pierced their
- 6:19hearts and they said to him and to the other apostles, Brothers,
- 6:25what should we do? Peter replied, Each of you must
- 6:29repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptised in the name
- 6:34of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
- 6:37Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:41This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away,
- 6:46all who have been called by the Lord our God.
- 6:49Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging
- 6:53all his listeners. Save yourself from this crooked
- 6:56generation. All who believed what Peter said
- 7:00were baptised and added to the church that day, about 3000 in
- 7:05all, all the believers devoted themselves to the apostles
- 7:09teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals, including
- 7:13the Lord's Supper, and to prayer.
- 7:16A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles
- 7:21performed many miraculous signs and wonders.
- 7:24And all the believers met together in one place and shared
- 7:27everything they had. They sold their property and
- 7:30possessions and shared the money with those in need.
- 7:34They worshipped together at the temple each day, met in homes
- 7:38for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great
- 7:41joy and generosity, all the while praising God and enjoying
- 7:46the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to
- 7:50their fellowship those who were being saved.
- 8:03Our Holy Spirit, as you used Peter that day so powerfully to
- 8:08share your message, to transform these thousands of people to
- 8:12turn to you and to follow you and invite you into their lives.
- 8:17Ah, Spirit, I pray that you would use us as well, that you
- 8:20would embolden and empower us so that we would step competently
- 8:26into these places that you would have us go, so that your good
- 8:29news could be known, so that your love could be shared and
- 8:33your blessing felt. May we be your companionship to
- 8:39others, your words of comfort to others, and a signpost pointing
- 8:45to you for others. And each day, as you prepare us
- 8:49for your work, continue your transforming work in us so that
- 8:54the fruits of your Spirit can become more and more abundant in
- 8:57each of our lives. And that when people know us and
- 9:02see the way we choose to live, they would be amazed by the way
- 9:06that you are working in us so that we can truly point people
- 9:11to you. We thank you for taking up
- 9:15residence in US so intimately, our majestic God, wonderful
- 9:20Saviour, powerful Spirit. And we pray this in your Triune
- 9:24name, Amen.
