- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. OK, so today we are talking
- 0:32about contrast and the power of contrast.
- 0:35And this is, this is very, very much something that's built into
- 0:39our everyday existence and coexistence with each other and
- 0:43the world. So I'm going to use a story from
- 0:46here just because it's the best way to tell you about it.
- 0:50Yesterday, my son, I've, I've spoken about it on here.
- 0:53He was rebuilding a motorcycle and I've been so proud of him
- 0:57for redoing it. Well, something happened and the
- 0:59engine on it seized up somehow and he was so upset.
- 1:04Now this engine was not overly expensive.
- 1:06It was like $100 and he could go get a new one at any point in
- 1:10time. But he was so overwhelmingly
- 1:14upset that his project went sideways and it it it actually
- 1:20didn't go sideways because it was days like he got it running,
- 1:22he was using it, he was having fun with it.
- 1:24And then something happened and it seized up and no one could
- 1:27get clarity on what happened. So yesterday he was overwhelmed
- 1:32with the frustration that comes when you don't know something.
- 1:35It's just there. But the contrast of having the
- 1:38new bike and seeing how great it was compared to not having the
- 1:42bike was he he was just getting more and more angry about it.
- 1:46So I stopped him and I sat him down and I said, listen, did you
- 1:49enjoy the bike while you had it? Yes, I did and that's why I'm so
- 1:52upset. I said I understand, but that
- 1:56that you have to think about this differently.
- 1:57You have to change your approach with this right now.
- 2:00So you were upset that the old bike, the beat up bike that you
- 2:04bought didn't work? Well, yes.
- 2:06OK, so then you decided you were going to rebuild that bike from
- 2:11top to bottom, paint, chain brakes, the whole thing, new
- 2:15engine. Yes.
- 2:16OK. And did you achieve that goal?
- 2:19Yes. So see, what I'm doing in this
- 2:21process with him is I'm building the contrast from what was the
- 2:25crappy bike to what he had. So he's like, OK, yes, but I
- 2:29ruined it. I said, well, one, you don't
- 2:31know that you ruined it. Sometimes things just happen.
- 2:35And what if it had nothing to do with you?
- 2:37What if it was a mechanical malfunction that was deep within
- 2:41the engine that you had nothing to do with?
- 2:44Essentially the only thing you had to do with it was run the
- 2:47bike. And this was it, right?
- 2:49That and it happened. So he stops and he looks at me
- 2:52and he says, what's your point? And I said the point is the
- 2:55contrast of having that brand new bike set up, the way you
- 2:59built it, the way you wanted it has taught you something.
- 3:02And you have to use that contrast and say, I now like
- 3:05that bike and I can rebuild that.
- 3:08Seeing the contrast helps you move to the next place.
- 3:12It's like when you go to a very nice restaurant and you have
- 3:17really fancy food and it contrasts to the food that you
- 3:20eat every day. You're like, wow, I love that.
- 3:23And, and listen, this shows up everywhere.
- 3:25We don't recognize how much contrast shows up everywhere in
- 3:28our life. If I buy flowers from the
- 3:31supplier instead of the grocery store, guess what?
- 3:34Those flowers last a longer time.
- 3:36So I can look at it and I can say, oh, look at that contrast.
- 3:39That's very big. And I can, I can say the
- 3:43difference is immense. And I want that.
- 3:47I want, I want to be able to see the contrast.
- 3:49It's like picking towels. We've all done that.
- 3:51You tuck touch sheets, touch blankets.
- 3:53You're like, oh, I don't like the feel of that.
- 3:55Well, how are you determining this is because of contrast?
- 3:58You're seeing something that doesn't work compared to
- 4:01something that does work. So back to the engine.
- 4:04So I said to him, you know, here's the solution.
- 4:07It's a very simple solution. You just get another engine.
- 4:10And he was like, well, I don't know if I broke it, so I can't
- 4:14even return it. I said no.
- 4:16You go back and tell them you don't know what happened and
- 4:18see, you see what happens. So make a Long story short.
- 4:22We went last night and we returned the engine.
- 4:25He removed it from the bike. He returned it and they deemed
- 4:28it wasn't his fault. And so he's learned.
- 4:31Now he says I have to start all over again.
- 4:33And I said yes. And what did you learn the first
- 4:36time that can help you this time?
- 4:38And so he started to get it and he was like, well, OK, this time
- 4:42I'll do this and this time I'll do this.
- 4:44And I said, and what taught you that?
- 4:46And he said contrast. And I said exactly.
- 4:48So when you see it, you can contrast and pair.
- 4:51You can see where you did something one way and you want
- 4:54to change it and do it another way.
- 4:57I can't stress enough how much contrast shows up in our world
- 5:00every day. We just don't know it.
- 5:02We have our favorite coffee shop.
- 5:04Well, how did we get a favorite coffee shop?
- 5:06Because we went to a crappy coffee shop and we were like,
- 5:08I'm not going back there again. Or we have our favorite barista
- 5:12and when we see the one that we don't like at the counter
- 5:14because their coffee isn't as good, we're like, no, not them.
- 5:19I mean, we do this constantly. So what's important is to
- 5:24remember we live in a world of contrast.
- 5:26It's around us all the time. It's in the news, it's
- 5:29everywhere. You can tap into it in a
- 5:32moment's notice. I'm in the garage this morning
- 5:35very early, and I'm looking at all the tomatoes and I'm looking
- 5:39at how much more they grew this year with these grow lights than
- 5:43with the other grow lights. What is that falling under
- 5:46contrast? Everything.
- 5:48Everything does. So just remember, ask the right
- 5:52questions. This is contrast.
- 5:54First, make a statement. This is contrast.
- 5:56So what was it or what did what happened and where did I want it
- 6:00to go? Base it on those things that you
- 6:03can take into your observation. And then say, oh, OK, the
- 6:06contrast of this, I can see it. I got it.
- 6:11All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:13will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
