- 0:32Speaker 1: first light dot com. F I R S T L
- 0:35Speaker 1: I T E dot com. I'm gonna start out by
- 0:42Speaker 1: clearing the air around you falling out of a boat,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and I want to like, here's the thing. We're at
- 0:49Speaker 1: our Mediater Experiences event in uh Cypress Cove Marina in Venice, Louisiana,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and we're on a day when we got a new
- 0:57Speaker 1: group coming in today and an old group going so
- 1:00Speaker 1: it's a day off. Yesterday, I was fishing with my group,
- 1:04Speaker 1: my assignees. One is in waste management, one is a butcher,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and one was a lawyer, and I accidentally fell out
- 1:17Speaker 1: of the boat, which which I haven't done in my
- 1:20Speaker 1: adult life fallen out of a boat, and nobody else
- 1:23Speaker 1: on this trip has either no one's fallen out of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the boat. I have never like I've fallen out of
- 1:30Speaker 1: boats that capsized, but you can't really help that. I've
- 1:34Speaker 1: never fallen out of a fine boat I have as
- 1:38Speaker 1: an adult. I'm gonna tell what happened, and I'm gonna
- 1:41Speaker 1: tell how I've how I dealt with it in the moment,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and I'm gonna tell how I'm dealing with it now.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So I caught a red fish that was outside of
- 1:49Speaker 1: the slot limit, red drum, I'll point out. And everybody
- 1:53Speaker 1: else that tells the story and laughs about it that
- 1:55Speaker 1: was on the boat never mentions that it was the
- 1:57Speaker 1: biggest fish of the day, never mentioned.
- 2:00Speaker 2: That it's not important the biggest fish.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Of the day.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And I was in the bow of the boat and
- 2:06Speaker 1: it was kind of high up, and I took a
- 2:09Speaker 1: photo of the fish and wanted to resuscitate it. I
- 2:12Speaker 1: wanted to demonstrate responsible angling techniques, so I didn't want
- 2:17Speaker 1: to go to.
- 2:17Speaker 3: The back of the boat.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Because you know the whole like keeping your fish wet.
- 2:21Speaker 1: This fish is getting dried off at this point, Okay,
- 2:24Speaker 1: So I'm like, I want to take took a photo
- 2:27Speaker 1: of it, and I'm like, I know, it's like all naughty.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You're not supposed to take photos.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It's fine to impale them on the hook, but you're
- 2:33Speaker 1: not supposed to detain them.
- 2:34Speaker 4: So no, I think that's only from trout. Oh really,
- 2:38Speaker 4: I think these fish are hardy. These fish can like
- 2:41Speaker 4: live in the bottom of the boat for a couple
- 2:42Speaker 4: of minutes and then you put them back in and
- 2:44Speaker 4: they're like thanks.
- 2:45Speaker 1: He sure thought so this fish. But my thing was
- 2:49Speaker 1: I was going to do the resuscitation move. But I'm
- 2:52Speaker 1: high up. The bow is at a little higher than
- 2:54Speaker 1: other parts of the boat, and there's no rail. You
- 2:57Speaker 1: follow me, it's a flat deck as I'm lean, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: I have carpal tunnel syndrome, which this battle with this
- 3:05Speaker 1: fish of exceptional size qualifiers. Were you in a wavy spot? No, okay,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's not waving, but it was windy. It was windy,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but I had I had a not a tailwind. That
- 3:16Speaker 1: should have helped. The wind should have helped. So I'm
- 3:21Speaker 1: sort of thinking about my my how I need to
- 3:24Speaker 1: have the surgery on my wrist. The fish as well
- 3:27Speaker 1: being the the height I was above the water.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Wait, you were thinking about your surgery.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It's bugging the hell out of me right now. It's
- 3:37Speaker 1: related to composing on a computer. But the fish fight
- 3:43Speaker 1: really bothered it because everything bothers it when it's inflamed.
- 3:47Speaker 1: This is all on my mind, and I'm reaching, and
- 3:50Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself, my god, that water is far
- 3:52Speaker 1: down as.
- 3:54Speaker 6: I'm are you are you crouded?
- 3:57Speaker 1: As it started to get really close.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Are you want a squat? Are you on your knees?
- 4:03Speaker 3: I can't recall I was not on my knees. I don't.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I just remember the last thought I had was how
- 4:09Speaker 1: far the water was away. It was the last thought
- 4:14Speaker 1: I had.
- 4:15Speaker 6: You thought you could die?
- 4:16Speaker 2: And then suddenly it was very close.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I was thinking like, wow, this is quite a reach
- 4:22Speaker 1: to get this fish down where I need to get them.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And then I was just in the water head first.
- 4:27Speaker 1: How deep was But I kind of did like like
- 4:30Speaker 1: a TJ. Hooker roll, like a before you guys time.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I just kind of did. It was like a barrel roll.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So you went like show as over teakettle? You call
- 4:40Speaker 1: it ass over tea kettle?
- 4:42Speaker 6: How deep was the water?
- 4:43Speaker 3: We didn't hit the bottom.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I was out so fast my hat and sunglasses are
- 4:46Speaker 1: still on. The first thing I said was I fell
- 4:49Speaker 1: in the water.
- 4:52Speaker 7: In case there was any question, huh.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So the problem is I'm with all strangers. I'm with
- 4:59Speaker 1: a fishing guy and three strangers. So how do you do?
- 5:03Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Like save faith? Yeah, I just got right back to fishing,
- 5:09Speaker 1: because what are you gonna do? Like, did anyone tell
- 5:11Speaker 1: me out?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Everybody talked about it. It was commented on.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I commented on it, but I wasn't like I didn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna I just got right back up and fished.
- 5:21Speaker 3: As gonna go sit down.
- 5:23Speaker 6: No, nothing was wrong.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Yeah, you would almost die they like stop and think
- 5:28Speaker 5: about it.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I know, And I was trying to be like I
- 5:30Speaker 1: didn't want to play it like something, so I was
- 5:35Speaker 1: trying so hard. You know, like if you're going through
- 5:38Speaker 1: customs and you haven't done anything wrong, and then you
- 5:40Speaker 1: start tripping yourself up and you're starting to be like
- 5:42Speaker 1: how would you act? You're like, I haven't done anything wrong,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but I'm nervous. How would I act if I hadn't
- 5:47Speaker 1: done anything wrong but I haven't done anything wrong?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Like what would you act like?
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know, like trying to come in and out of
- 5:54Speaker 1: Mexico with guns? You're sort of like, I'm gonna act
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know normal, Steve, after you did that, so back
- 6:04Speaker 1: on boat, I'm trying to be like I don't want
- 6:06Speaker 1: to act like I'm not.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I don't want to act like I'm.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Like this happens all the time, or.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I don't want to act like like I don't think
- 6:15Speaker 1: it's on you. Yeah, I had a hard time. I tried.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I was trying to get in the mind frame of
- 6:19Speaker 1: what would I do if I always fell in off
- 6:22Speaker 1: the boat. He's like a third time this week. But
- 6:28Speaker 1: then I wouldn't want people to think I always fell
- 6:30Speaker 1: It was just it was like, it's a very hard.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Moment to play.
- 6:34Speaker 1: How'd you feel the boat handled it? They did great,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and they're all so old none of them thought to
- 6:38Speaker 1: record it. That's not true, I tell you, buddy.
- 6:42Speaker 8: I was told, I don't think you understand the gravity
- 6:46Speaker 8: of this situation.
- 6:47Speaker 7: I don't think there hasn't hit yet. No, no, no, there has.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Imagine like the most salacious like rumor, like the most
- 6:54Speaker 8: juicy rumor out there, when Steve Ranella falls into the
- 6:57Speaker 8: water off of a redfish boat trying to release that
- 7:01Speaker 8: spreads in a way you can't imagine. It was like
- 7:04Speaker 8: a wave of washing across the bayou of people who
- 7:07Speaker 8: are like did you hear M Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 5: No, I no, yeah, I saw this radio chatter and
- 7:11Speaker 5: then it's probably on the Reddit channel, right.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I told my wife, and my wife immediately attributed it
- 7:18Speaker 1: to aging, which is like, come on, come on, that's
- 7:22Speaker 1: the worst thing to hear. Yeah, she's like, I'm gonna
- 7:26Speaker 1: be mental pause and you're falling out of boats.
- 7:31Speaker 9: Yeah, there was a secret photo shown around. And I
- 7:35Speaker 9: also had heard people debating whether or not the real
- 7:38Speaker 9: issue here was your technique. I heard multip people say
- 7:42Speaker 9: he shouldn't have tried to put in the water and
- 7:44Speaker 9: resuscitate it. You're just supposed to torpedo the redfish.
- 7:48Speaker 5: That's the guys that I didn't even need to debate
- 7:50Speaker 5: about that thrown in headfirst.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It was a technique problem, supposedly, Yeah, you're being too nice.
- 7:57Speaker 1: How do you guys know I didn't fall in on.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Purpose is to give people something to chat about. Achieve
- 8:02Speaker 1: that Bonnie Rate song. Let's give him something to talk about. Yeah,
- 8:05Speaker 1: talk about love. Half a finger wrote in to say this, Oh,
- 8:12Speaker 1: introduce yourselves. That's in the notes.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Go ahead, we're here, Seth Morris Williams and me on
- 8:25Speaker 4: our on our day off at Meat Eater experiences. Not
- 8:27Speaker 4: though we just said goodbye to a group, we got
- 8:30Speaker 4: another group coming in in like three hours and we're podcasting.
- 8:36Speaker 3: In the hospitality industry, they called the turnover day.
- 8:38Speaker 6: That's right.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Uh okay, Before you guys see the answer, I want
- 8:44Speaker 1: to go around the room. Pry on or pre on mark.
- 8:50Speaker 7: M hm, Prian seth on on.
- 8:55Speaker 6: Prion, just to make it even both.
- 8:59Speaker 3: It comes from it's hot. Everybody uses something different.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I was asking someone what you're supposed to say, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: I'll point out one of my favorite stories. As I
- 9:05Speaker 1: was getting my hearing check. This is another old thing,
- 9:08Speaker 1: like the older you get, the more you get tonitis.
- 9:10Speaker 1: My doctor said tenadus and I said, is that how
- 9:14Speaker 1: you say it? And he goes, I don't know how
- 9:15Speaker 1: you say it. Uh. Heffelfinger said, here we have a
- 9:21Speaker 1: very definite answer. Stanley Preussinger discovered the agent that causes
- 9:28Speaker 1: CWD scrapie c JD, which is kreutz felt Yak disease
- 9:34Speaker 1: koru okay, and he published about it in nineteen eighty two.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He suggested the word prion to describe this newly discovered
- 9:46Speaker 1: cause of neurological disease. They gave him a Nobel Prize
- 9:52Speaker 1: for his paper. In it, he the guy that invented
- 9:57Speaker 1: the word clarified that he pronounces it prion. I hard
- 10:05Speaker 1: argue with that. Puts that to bed. Speaking of Preon's
- 10:08Speaker 1: where's this thing? Durkin?
- 10:10Speaker 3: Dirkin just got scolded by Uncle Ted Nugent. Oh boy, wow.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Durkin wrote an article, Uh, Pat Dirkin the last of
- 10:19Speaker 1: the Uh. He's many things, but one of the hats
- 10:22Speaker 1: he wears He's He's a part of a dying breed
- 10:26Speaker 1: of regional outdoor columness. Someone I was lamenting the America's
- 10:33Speaker 1: loss of regional outdoor columnists, and someone reminded me of
- 10:38Speaker 1: who mine was as a kid that I always read
- 10:43Speaker 1: and he would every you know, he'd ice fishing reports,
- 10:46Speaker 1: Miskegan Chronicle, the Outdoor section. He'd be like, Hey, the
- 10:51Speaker 1: walleye bite is hot. You know, the deer numbers are up,
- 10:54Speaker 1: deer numbers are down.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Whatever. Bob Butts I.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Think was his name, tough one, tough one, not as
- 11:03Speaker 1: tough as the one I saw the other day.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Is that fellow by the last.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Name of Schmuck?
- 11:10Speaker 7: Yikes?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Great guy?
- 11:12Speaker 3: Though Uh, I didn't bring that up.
- 11:19Speaker 6: What did Pat get scolded?
- 11:20Speaker 1: For Oh yeah, Pat wrote an article he pulled up.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Pat wrote an article it's not for all to talk
- 11:38Speaker 1: about this Leon Musk character. This Uh oh no, it's
- 11:41Speaker 1: working now Leon. I'll only say that because I just
- 11:45Speaker 1: read that the art. I couldn't find any example. I
- 11:47Speaker 1: just read. There was an article like now that Biden
- 11:51Speaker 1: dropped out. There's a lot of focus on Trump's age,
- 11:54Speaker 1: like Trump sort of inherited the like like when Biden
- 11:58Speaker 1: was like really old and cognitively failing, all of the
- 12:02Speaker 1: attention of age was there, and now people are like, oh.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Wow, that guy is elderly too.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So someone I was just reading article the other day
- 12:10Speaker 1: and it's and someone was commenting that he recently referred
- 12:14Speaker 1: to Eon Musk as Leon Musk. I thought I was hilarious,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but then I couldn't but I couldn't find it. It's Elondon,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you know what I'm talking about aging. I thought it
- 12:33Speaker 1: was funny, so I was like, that's really funny, Leon Musk,
- 12:36Speaker 1: And so then I typed in Trump saying Leon Musk
- 12:39Speaker 1: and could find no reference for it. I didn't spend
- 12:41Speaker 1: a ton of time on it, but I don't know
- 12:42Speaker 1: if it's like a fake news thing, but I thought
- 12:44Speaker 1: that was funny, Leon Musk, and I told myself from
- 12:46Speaker 1: now on, that's what I'm going to say. But it worked.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Starlink loaded the page fast, not as fast as won
- 12:54Speaker 1: My life, but it loaded the page. So Durkins article
- 13:00Speaker 1: with the headline Wisconsin DNR still ignores cwd's elephant in
- 13:08Speaker 1: the room, and Durkin is lamenting the fact that a
- 13:13Speaker 1: DNR press release on September twelfth came out from Wisconsin's
- 13:17Speaker 1: DNR kind of like kicking off the season and kind
- 13:25Speaker 1: of kicking off the season, and he's saying, why are
- 13:29Speaker 1: they not mentioning the fact the DNR release failed to
- 13:34Speaker 1: mention CWD, despite the fact that it's now in forty
- 13:37Speaker 1: six of the state's seventy two counties. Durkin said, four
- 13:45Speaker 1: of the past five dear my daughter and I have
- 13:48Speaker 1: shot have all tested positive, including all three bucks I've
- 13:55Speaker 1: shot aged three point five, three point five and one
- 13:58Speaker 1: point five. He finally got a dole that was clean,
- 14:03Speaker 1: but his daughter's two point five year old dough tested positive.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Last fault Nugent says, we can't believe anyone is still
- 14:18Speaker 1: falling for the CWD scam that has never hurt a
- 14:21Speaker 1: deer herd anywhere at any time, Pat Dirk, and what
- 14:25Speaker 1: happened to you? Did he tweet that? No, I don't
- 14:31Speaker 1: really put it in his comments, it's respectfully put it
- 14:34Speaker 1: in the comments section. What we're looking at here is
- 14:36Speaker 1: two different views of it. There's a view of it
- 14:39Speaker 1: of man. Cwd's super scary. I hope no one catches
- 14:43Speaker 1: it and I hope it doesn't kill off deer herds,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and a view being cwd's been around now since the seventies.
- 14:52Speaker 1: No one's caught CWD and there's no demons. There's like
- 14:56Speaker 1: hints of but so far no demonstrative evidence. Hints of evidence,
- 15:02Speaker 1: but no like real demonstrative proof that it that it
- 15:05Speaker 1: has impacted deer heard, I mean, wouldn't Doug say otherwise?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Doug would say otherwise? But a thing that you and
- 15:15Speaker 1: this piss is Doug off. But you find that there
- 15:18Speaker 1: are are areas that have CWD. There's a bunch of deer.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Doug was recently telling me about his spot of property.
- 15:29Speaker 4: He just went to tour pretty big property. I forget
- 15:34Speaker 4: eighty eighty acres down there somewhere not too far from him,
- 15:37Speaker 4: and amazing oak regeneration that had actually called him to
- 15:42Speaker 4: talk about that, and he had the story to start
- 15:45Speaker 4: off with, and the two weren't related. And a lot
- 15:48Speaker 4: of young seedlings and no brows the heart and center
- 15:53Speaker 4: of like the CWD heat map, so very very low
- 16:01Speaker 4: deer herd, and the oaks are just like so there
- 16:06Speaker 4: is a plus for cw D. It's gonna be oak regeneral.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Low deer herd from c low deer heard from because
- 16:12Speaker 1: there is some yeah, there is scattered evidence suggesting lower
- 16:22Speaker 1: deer numbers. Well, I think that what I think that
- 16:24Speaker 1: people that track and monitor chronic waste and disease, what
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think would be very interesting to do is make
- 16:32Speaker 1: a timeline and put two lines on it boone and
- 16:36Speaker 1: Crockett entries and c w D prevalence.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Per county.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And see because that is a thing that would speak
- 16:48Speaker 1: to like if if you're not afraid to eat in
- 16:51Speaker 1: CWD infected deer meat, and many people have never got sick,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and you think that CWD die offs pale in comparison
- 17:02Speaker 1: to EHD and blue tongue, which is true.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Like a friend of mine in Michigan they.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Just lost fifty there's piles of twenty and thirty dead
- 17:12Speaker 1: deer fifty percent of their deer herd by blue tongue
- 17:17Speaker 1: and EHD. So there are wildlife diseases. No one likes
- 17:21Speaker 1: to see them, But there are wildlife diseases that are
- 17:23Speaker 1: that are like cataclysmic for deer populations. This is a
- 17:29Speaker 1: new one. This is mysterious. And and and I'll, as
- 17:32Speaker 1: I always do, to have the conversation. I primarily I
- 17:34Speaker 1: primarily point out that I have a fear about human transmission.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And then people would say, like, oh, yeah, but how
- 17:40Speaker 1: can you say you care about wildlife if you if
- 17:42Speaker 1: you don't, if you're not troubled by animals dying of disease.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I am, But I mostly the thing that really scares
- 17:48Speaker 1: the hell out of me is human transmission. I had
- 17:51Speaker 1: such a complicated sentence, go, I can't rememb where else
- 17:53Speaker 1: had it with it.
- 17:54Speaker 3: That's a age thing.
- 17:59Speaker 6: I think you just made a good point.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I could just wrap it up. People might forget what
- 18:02Speaker 1: I was going to get at. Oh No, what I'm
- 18:05Speaker 1: gonna get at is this there are You might not
- 18:09Speaker 1: be bothered by eating CWD infected meat, right, and you
- 18:13Speaker 1: might not be bothered by just the act the fact
- 18:16Speaker 1: that some deer will die of this disease, because you
- 18:18Speaker 1: might look and be like, deer die of all kinds
- 18:19Speaker 1: of stuff, including arrows, bullets, cars, EHD, blue tongue, whatever,
- 18:24Speaker 1: they get chopped up by combines, they just die. So
- 18:27Speaker 1: that doesn't bother me. But if you saw that, if
- 18:32Speaker 1: you saw a timeline with prevalence rates and boone and
- 18:37Speaker 1: crocket submissions, and you saw that as the prevalence line
- 18:43Speaker 1: goes up in many states, in many counties across the country,
- 18:48Speaker 1: that the prevalence line goes up and the boone and
- 18:51Speaker 1: crocket submission line goes down, then you might find a
- 18:56Speaker 1: new class of individual who is concerned about CWD.
- 19:00Speaker 3: H I don't know. I'm surprised no.
- 19:02Speaker 1: One's done this.
- 19:03Speaker 5: What about those areas where there's high CWD don't they
- 19:06Speaker 5: oftentimes allocate way more tags?
- 19:09Speaker 7: Yeah, you would have to tease that.
- 19:10Speaker 5: So your deer numbers could be down because people are
- 19:12Speaker 5: just shooting a lot more deer, Yeah, it'd be, But.
- 19:15Speaker 4: They aren't though that at least from what I hear anecdotally,
- 19:20Speaker 4: is that like people we've covered this where they're begging
- 19:23Speaker 4: people to shoot dos and no one's shooting deer.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Correct.
- 19:27Speaker 6: So I don't know if that, if that's actually happened.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Yeah, last year Michigan's Apartment of Natural Resources sent out
- 19:33Speaker 1: a letter saying, we like basically throwing it kind of
- 19:37Speaker 1: had this tone of the director throwing his hands up
- 19:41Speaker 1: in the air, saying, we have done everything we can
- 19:45Speaker 1: think of to incentivize dough harvest. And it's not even
- 19:47Speaker 1: a CWD issues, just like habitat quality other issues. We've
- 19:50Speaker 1: done everything we can think of to incentivize dough harvest.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It continues to go down.
- 19:55Speaker 9: Interesting, Yeah, we had a god, I'm gonna get the
- 19:57Speaker 9: wrong number. It was either a eleven or twenty percent
- 20:01Speaker 9: reduced take in our last so last year, our last season,
- 20:06Speaker 9: so deer harvest. Harvest continues to go down, but population
- 20:10Speaker 9: continues to go up. And then yeah, it's a problem.
- 20:13Speaker 9: They came out again this year and all sorts of
- 20:15Speaker 9: news clips and stuff saying please please take take more, Dear.
- 20:18Speaker 9: They've started to tweak regulations. They're trying to find ways
- 20:21Speaker 9: to incentivize does even more and more, like our youth season.
- 20:25Speaker 9: Starting next year, the youth season no longer will be
- 20:28Speaker 9: buck or dough only does as well as there's there's
- 20:33Speaker 9: always been an early antlers season. There's going to be
- 20:35Speaker 9: a new.
- 20:36Speaker 6: Oh gosh, really works, but nobody likes it.
- 20:40Speaker 9: It was debated, there was that was one of the
- 20:42Speaker 9: options that was discussed with the Commission this year, which
- 20:45Speaker 9: I wouldn't be surprised if it comes up again. There's
- 20:49Speaker 9: been options of extending seasons and this will be the
- 20:52Speaker 9: case next year, extending seasons into January. More and more counties,
- 20:56Speaker 9: so they're doing what they can, but it's really hard
- 20:58Speaker 9: to get people to do it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And then people continue to report harder time finding hunting spots,
- 21:04Speaker 1: so you have like fewer people hunting, killing fewer deer.
- 21:09Speaker 1: It's just like the amount of space that each hunter
- 21:12Speaker 1: takes up has grown so much. And if I look
- 21:15Speaker 1: at like when I grew up, we hunted two family farms.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Each family's last name started with a Z oddly not related,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and it was like it was kind of like everybody
- 21:31Speaker 1: from church hunted these farms. Not really, but it was
- 21:34Speaker 1: there was. It was just a lot of people had permission.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And then it was funny because you watch and then
- 21:43Speaker 1: another generation comes up that wasn't in the strict farming business,
- 21:49Speaker 1: you know, because these the patriarchs at the time when
- 21:51Speaker 1: I was a kid did dairy, raised corn, did alfalfa,
- 21:57Speaker 1: had zero interest in hunting. But it's like a smaller
- 22:01Speaker 1: farm that isn't going to support many families working on it,
- 22:04Speaker 1: so they would have, you know, four or five kids,
- 22:09Speaker 1: those four or five kids, there's not room to be
- 22:12Speaker 1: a farmer like on the farm, the dassel farming. So
- 22:14Speaker 1: they go and they go into other industries outside of
- 22:18Speaker 1: agg and they like to hunt deer, and over time
- 22:21Speaker 1: it becomes that it's you know, you watch this this
- 22:24Speaker 1: thing happen. I watch it happened in multiple places at
- 22:26Speaker 1: times becomes like a deer property and a big ladder
- 22:29Speaker 1: stands right pop up here and there, and all of
- 22:33Speaker 1: a sudden, it's kind of like us. It just it
- 22:35Speaker 1: doesn't have that feel anymore. Like that permission, that property,
- 22:39Speaker 1: that access became very coveted, and it was happening, you know,
- 22:44Speaker 1: in the nineties. It just became like coveted, and it's
- 22:47Speaker 1: like fewer people are on per patch of ground from
- 22:53Speaker 1: back when it's like people don't really care, right.
- 22:57Speaker 8: We attribute that partially to urban sprawl and things like that,
- 23:00Speaker 8: just less land out there, less huntable land. But really
- 23:05Speaker 8: what we've done, we're in a big time trophy hunting face.
- 23:09Speaker 8: You know, it's cyclical and right now the method is
- 23:13Speaker 8: get your hands on something exclusive, raise deer, name them,
- 23:18Speaker 8: protect them. And those people generally, and I'm kind of
- 23:22Speaker 8: stereotyping here, but they're not going to be like I'm
- 23:25Speaker 8: killing a shitload of doughs.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Off my property.
- 23:28Speaker 8: The priority is bucks first, and so you don't have
- 23:32Speaker 8: you just don't have that take anymore. So the people
- 23:34Speaker 8: who would be more inclined to shoot does little bucks
- 23:37Speaker 8: just go out on a weekend or whatever. Those people,
- 23:40Speaker 8: their experience is declining because they're pushed on to public.
- 23:43Speaker 8: You know, there's the guys we saw in Oklahoma and
- 23:46Speaker 8: they don't have They're not the ones out there in
- 23:48Speaker 8: October killing some does. And that's a big problem we
- 23:52Speaker 8: have right now because there's still a lot of land
- 23:55Speaker 8: out there, but it's a lot of it is tied
- 23:58Speaker 8: up because of the sort of the dial that we're
- 24:01Speaker 8: really adopting as white till hunt.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, let's be clear, we are all part of that.
- 24:06Speaker 9: You've got private land, you own, you do the same
- 24:08Speaker 9: thing giannis as private land, he hunts, I have stuff.
- 24:11Speaker 2: So we're not all part of it.
- 24:13Speaker 7: I don't do that.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I have a I have a fish shack, but a
- 24:17Speaker 1: lot of people fish out of that shit.
- 24:18Speaker 9: Yeah, So I mean I think it's not it's a
- 24:21Speaker 9: basic supplying demand thing. It is what it is. But
- 24:24Speaker 9: it's rather than demonizing someone who hunts private land, who's
- 24:28Speaker 9: demonizing anybody. I don't think we're demonizing.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm saying it's like a it's a are you Are
- 24:32Speaker 1: you contesting that what we're saying is accurate. No, I'm not.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I'm saying the less like serious, very serious deer hunters
- 24:38Speaker 1: who are very focused use more space. It's like more
- 24:44Speaker 1: acreage per hunter is used now than it was in
- 24:48Speaker 1: the late eighties.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Early nineties for sure.
- 24:50Speaker 1: For sure, when it used to have a can I
- 24:52Speaker 1: hunt your place only on one condition you kill them all?
- 24:56Speaker 1: Would be like what a farmer would say to you
- 24:57Speaker 1: in the nineties, So the early nine My point is like, yes,
- 25:01Speaker 1: this is like a basic fact of reality now. And
- 25:04Speaker 1: so I just see a lot of people that love
- 25:06Speaker 1: to complain about it. Yes, that's my I'm gonna have it.
- 25:08Speaker 1: So I have a big diet tribe. I'm going to
- 25:10Speaker 1: go on.
- 25:12Speaker 9: Before the complaining, I would just say it's more useful
- 25:17Speaker 9: rather than bitch about the white tail industrial complex, to
- 25:20Speaker 9: say instead like, Okay, this is where things are headed.
- 25:23Speaker 9: How can we take advantage of rather than bemoaning it,
- 25:27Speaker 9: Let's look at how we can flip it and make.
- 25:30Speaker 1: It a positive.
- 25:31Speaker 9: And so the positive could be the example of what
- 25:33Speaker 9: we're doing in southern Michigan with the Back forty and
- 25:35Speaker 9: with volunteers in the National Deer Association, where there's a
- 25:38Speaker 9: bunch of people who own private land or have leases
- 25:41Speaker 9: but recognize as a thing and also are realizing there
- 25:44Speaker 9: are people who do want to kill these doughs, but
- 25:46Speaker 9: they don't have the access. And we've found creative ways
- 25:49Speaker 9: to connect those people, and there's a lot more private
- 25:52Speaker 9: land landowners or leaseholders who are willing to invite these
- 25:57Speaker 9: people out to come and be a part of it
- 25:59Speaker 9: and to help us with these dough harvest goals. So
- 26:01Speaker 9: I think rather than bemoaning and saying like these people
- 26:05Speaker 9: who have private land are the enemy, like it's a
- 26:08Speaker 9: problem caused by them, it's hey, you've got great access,
- 26:11Speaker 9: and let's let's just invite more people out there to
- 26:15Speaker 9: kill these dos.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And so that's what we're doing. We've got great, big
- 26:17Speaker 1: dough deer camps, and that's what Bubby Dog does exactly does.
- 26:23Speaker 3: It's just like a kill floor over there, man.
- 26:25Speaker 9: But I think it can be a good thing because
- 26:27Speaker 9: you have situation. Not I'm not saying that. If we could, sure,
- 26:30Speaker 9: i'd reverse it back to thirty years ago. But we
- 26:32Speaker 9: are where we are.
- 26:33Speaker 1: We can't turn back time. So rather than.
- 26:38Speaker 9: Yeah, so let's let's say what's spicy he got here? Well,
- 26:44Speaker 9: you're you're dogging on I'm kidding, Mark.
- 26:49Speaker 3: He's not dog on it. He's just saying it's a fact.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And I'm kidding about the dogging thing he is. I
- 26:55Speaker 1: agree it's a.
- 26:55Speaker 7: Fact, Mark.
- 26:56Speaker 8: I agree with you, But I also think that it's
- 26:59Speaker 8: not that scalable to be like just have a bunch
- 27:02Speaker 8: of private landowners jump in on this. I think there's
- 27:05Speaker 8: programs you could do that. But part of the reason
- 27:08Speaker 8: we are where we're at is because of this message
- 27:10Speaker 8: of like, the best way to kill a big one
- 27:13Speaker 8: is to lock it up.
- 27:14Speaker 7: Like a lot of guys aren't going to.
- 27:15Speaker 1: It one day a month right when the winds blow
- 27:18Speaker 1: out south southeast with a little bit of more south right.
- 27:21Speaker 8: And I think the bitterness doesn't come from So if
- 27:26Speaker 8: we look at this and we go, well, we'll have
- 27:29Speaker 8: a weekend and we invite a bunch of people out
- 27:30Speaker 8: to killdose, that's great, Like I think people should do that.
- 27:33Speaker 8: But that's also like my wife looks at hunting. If
- 27:38Speaker 8: I go bow hunting in the suburbs by my house
- 27:41Speaker 8: and I'm listening to traffic the whole time and it's
- 27:43Speaker 8: not I'm on twenty acres and I'm scared to shoot
- 27:46Speaker 8: one unless it's perfect because it might run into somebody's backyard.
- 27:49Speaker 8: That experience is not the same thing as the farms
- 27:52Speaker 8: I grew up in southeastern Minnesota, where I can walk
- 27:54Speaker 8: in with a stand on my back and I'm I
- 27:56Speaker 8: have land to work with. They're not the same activity,
- 27:58Speaker 8: even though they are the same activity. Yeah, And I
- 28:00Speaker 8: look at that and I go, it's nice to hand
- 28:03Speaker 8: some people some charity does and be like, go sit
- 28:06Speaker 8: this alfalfa field or whatever. But I think where the
- 28:09Speaker 8: kind of the where the jaded nature of you know,
- 28:12Speaker 8: the people who are bitching about this comes from, is
- 28:14Speaker 8: because they want to go hunting. They just don't have
- 28:17Speaker 8: the standards that you know, the private land guy who
- 28:22Speaker 8: wants to grow the big bucks does and he's like,
- 28:24Speaker 8: I'm getting kicked out of this experience of me going
- 28:26Speaker 8: and hunting for myself. I don't want somebody to just
- 28:29Speaker 8: be like, come out for two days and we'll put
- 28:32Speaker 8: you in the box blind and you can shoot a bunch,
- 28:33Speaker 8: because it's like, not the same hunt. And I think
- 28:36Speaker 8: that's where some of it comes from.
- 28:38Speaker 1: You know where I think the jadedness comes from. To
- 28:40Speaker 1: a large degree, I think it's a it's a reflection
- 28:43Speaker 1: of and I'm not just saying this. I fell out
- 28:44Speaker 1: of a boat. It's a reflection of age. And I'll
- 28:48Speaker 1: tell you a little bit why why I think that.
- 28:51Speaker 1: We one time had an entomologist on named Justin Schmidt,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and he is the inventor of the Schmidt pain index,
- 28:58Speaker 1: which is an index scale insect bites. He observed. He
- 29:06Speaker 1: said this about scientists. He said, the reason young scientists
- 29:14Speaker 1: make all the groundbreaking discoveries is that old scientists spend
- 29:19Speaker 1: all their time defending their now wrong ideas. So as
- 29:24Speaker 1: you're coming in and you're developing your outlook, you're like, oh, wow,
- 29:29Speaker 1: look at this and look at this how novel, And
- 29:32Speaker 1: then later you'll watch it'll start to your ideal become
- 29:37Speaker 1: aged people, the new generation of people will start chipping
- 29:43Speaker 1: away at it, and you're the human response is to
- 29:45Speaker 1: then go defend your set of idea, and now you're
- 29:48Speaker 1: not at the cutting edge anymore. Right. My fourteen year
- 29:54Speaker 1: old works at the meat Eater flagship store in Bozeman
- 29:58Speaker 1: day or two a week. He was working a lot
- 30:01Speaker 1: more in the summer, but now he's got school and
- 30:02Speaker 1: all that. Him and his other kid. So he's fourteen.
- 30:05Speaker 1: There's another kid that works down at the store who
- 30:07Speaker 1: has a driver's license. Okay, I'm out of town, and
- 30:12Speaker 1: he's like, can I go? Can we go hunting? On
- 30:16Speaker 1: the open day of duck season? Him and the other
- 30:17Speaker 1: kid he's going to drive. I give him like ten
- 30:22Speaker 1: talkings to about gun handling and all that kind of
- 30:25Speaker 1: stuff and send them on their way. And he said,
- 30:28Speaker 1: I said, where are you going? And he sends me
- 30:30Speaker 1: a pond, a public land pond, And I'm thinking to myself,
- 30:36Speaker 1: good luck with that, because it's like they saw a
- 30:38Speaker 1: bunch of ducks on a pond. So sure enough, he
- 30:43Speaker 1: sends me a text later someone's already in the spot,
- 30:46Speaker 1: which I knew what happened.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Well.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Later I talked to him. He had the best time
- 30:54Speaker 1: of his life. Went to a spot someone was there,
- 30:59Speaker 1: went down to the drove up and down the river.
- 31:01Speaker 1: They found like a little slew that had a beaver
- 31:03Speaker 1: damn on it, got out, put their decoys up and
- 31:05Speaker 1: killed a hen gadwall. Ecstatic, ecstatic.
- 31:12Speaker 6: Yeah, they did it on their own.
- 31:14Speaker 1: And I've taken him out to my buddies, managed duck
- 31:16Speaker 1: property for duck hunting a fair bit. He has a
- 31:21Speaker 1: good time, but not as good of a time as
- 31:23Speaker 1: one like me and him will go sit under a
- 31:24Speaker 1: bridge when the Goldenezer migrating through the last day or
- 31:28Speaker 1: two of the season, right, and he went out and
- 31:30Speaker 1: had like the he's still on cloud nine about like
- 31:33Speaker 1: the proudest accomplishment you ever had. Now, you take a
- 31:37Speaker 1: forty year old or a fifty year old who goes
- 31:40Speaker 1: to the pond and someone else's there, what is their
- 31:43Speaker 1: demeanor about it? It's like that you'll always get beat
- 31:49Speaker 1: by young dudes who everything's still fun, it's still exciting.
- 31:53Speaker 1: They welcome the challenge, and you'll turn into an old generally,
- 31:57Speaker 1: like I'm trying to be aware of this. Generally, what
- 32:00Speaker 1: happened is you'll turn into an old bitchy man, and
- 32:05Speaker 1: you'll forget that. You'll forget what it was like when
- 32:08Speaker 1: you were in your twenties and you scrounged and scrounged
- 32:12Speaker 1: and scrounged. We sufficient spot on the sue Edison Damn,
- 32:17Speaker 1: and old men would always get to the spot before
- 32:21Speaker 1: us because they could just get up earlier, and we did.
- 32:23Speaker 1: We would leave the bar and go to the spot
- 32:26Speaker 1: and sleep at the spot because you couldn't beat him fair, right, Like,
- 32:33Speaker 1: that was the level we were willing to go to
- 32:35Speaker 1: to steal people's spots. And then you get old and
- 32:39Speaker 1: you just bitch. We had this great we got this
- 32:42Speaker 1: great email from this guy in Michigan. He signed it
- 32:45Speaker 1: a piste off Michigan Hunter, and he was saying that
- 32:49Speaker 1: he was saying stuff this is like categorically untrue. He's like,
- 32:52Speaker 1: by the time the Big Hunt, yeah he called it
- 32:56Speaker 1: the Big Hunt. By the time the Big Hunt happens,
- 33:00Speaker 1: all of the bucks are dead because of the youth
- 33:04Speaker 1: hunt in the bowl hunt, and they ruined the Big Hunt.
- 33:08Speaker 1: It's like, is there any statistic to back that up?
- 33:12Speaker 1: That all, there's quite a bit of bucks are dead.
- 33:15Speaker 1: There's quite a bit of data to prove that's wrong.
- 33:17Speaker 1: How many fourteen year olds do you know are gonna
- 33:20Speaker 1: not go out because all the big bucks are dead.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It's just like you get old and you get bitchy
- 33:28Speaker 1: and you fall out of boats, and like you get
- 33:32Speaker 1: it's just how its go.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Your stories don't track.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Your stories don't track. You forget what you were talking about.
- 33:38Speaker 1: You bitch about the spots you had, and you forget
- 33:41Speaker 1: that when you found that spot, someone else's hunting and
- 33:43Speaker 1: you got there earlier than they did, right, And they
- 33:46Speaker 1: drove off bitching and you stole the spot, and then
- 33:50Speaker 1: it became your spot.
- 33:51Speaker 3: And then later some kids shows up and you just like.
- 33:56Speaker 1: You know everything. Shit duck dynasty, you know what I mean?
- 34:01Speaker 1: Like Tommy Edison wrote in The Blue Collar Scholar, you
- 34:08Speaker 1: guys good.
- 34:09Speaker 6: On moving on.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Tommy wants to know why do you criticize folks who
- 34:14Speaker 1: wear cowboy hats? I wear one, and often I could
- 34:18Speaker 1: make the argument that I'm more entitled to do so
- 34:20Speaker 1: than a random driver in a Bozeman airport. I grew
- 34:24Speaker 1: up with horses, own a steak and some cows, and
- 34:27Speaker 1: even still ride most Tuesday evenings. And he does, and
- 34:30Speaker 1: he does rodeo competition.
- 34:33Speaker 6: He criticized.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I think he's it's like he's laying out.
- 34:37Speaker 3: He's like he has I'll be right, No, I listen.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Yeah. If I let's say I all of a sudden
- 34:43Speaker 1: started dressing up like a cop, what's that going.
- 34:46Speaker 3: To do to society? Chaos?
- 34:49Speaker 1: Yeah, so when people dress up like cowboys, why is
- 34:52Speaker 1: it okay?
- 34:52Speaker 3: If I dressed up.
- 34:53Speaker 6: Like a cop.
- 34:54Speaker 2: It's just a general anti costume principle.
- 34:57Speaker 3: If I all of a sudden was like.
- 35:00Speaker 1: A badge and a police hat, and I started running
- 35:02Speaker 1: around and I got like a belt with some hand cuffings,
- 35:04Speaker 1: it'd be like.
- 35:05Speaker 4: A little But I don't think it's going to disrupt society.
- 35:10Speaker 3: If I dressed like a cop, yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 6: We would like sort of and then we would go
- 35:18Speaker 6: fishing with the cop.
- 35:20Speaker 10: I mean the real problem is you'd begin to think
- 35:22Speaker 10: you wear that badge long enough, then you think you
- 35:25Speaker 10: have the power in two which I think there's a
- 35:27Speaker 10: similar thing happening with the cowboy hat.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I've just been noticing that this guy, I feel like
- 35:32Speaker 1: it's getting a little loose. Who has a cowboy hair? Yes,
- 35:38Speaker 1: it's gotten a little. This been going on for maybe
- 35:43Speaker 1: it's probably it's a it's a gradient, no doubt, right,
- 35:48Speaker 1: But I feel like lately it's just gotten a little.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Loose, right like it used to.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Like for a while, it might not be that it
- 35:57Speaker 1: was you had proximity to livestock, or you had proximity
- 36:01Speaker 1: to live stock, you had friends in that world, you
- 36:05Speaker 1: held a certain worldview, perhaps you had certain political leanings.
- 36:11Speaker 1: It's now there's not even you could have a cowboy
- 36:14Speaker 1: hat and have zero proximity to live stock, be like
- 36:19Speaker 1: mega left wing. Do you know what I mean?
- 36:21Speaker 6: It's just like never ridden a horse.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Yeah, and and and I.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Feel like it's getting a little it'skinna. It's like if
- 36:27Speaker 1: I had a police uniform. Do you think some of
- 36:30Speaker 1: it is the law enforce the Yellowstone effect.
- 36:32Speaker 9: I was just gonna say, like in Bozeman, you're just
- 36:34Speaker 9: seeing it so much because it's become the costume of
- 36:36Speaker 9: choice for out of towners coming to visit Yellowstone the show.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Sure, yes, And I told.
- 36:42Speaker 4: You how comfortable to COVID boots are. I've been breaking
- 36:46Speaker 4: in getting ready for the tailgate tour.
- 36:48Speaker 3: That's good.
- 36:52Speaker 6: I haven't been winning a hat to match.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I I did find a man. Tommy agrees with me
- 36:58Speaker 1: on one thing. I recently saw him in the airport
- 37:02Speaker 1: through security with spurs. I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding
- 37:08Speaker 1: through security with spurs and his work gloves tucked into
- 37:12Speaker 1: his belt and he was legit.
- 37:16Speaker 3: No, oh it was a costume.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And you know that a judgment.
- 37:21Speaker 7: I just like you can just smell it on him.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You's like, uh, it's kind of I hesitate to say,
- 37:28Speaker 1: because people you're gonna scoff. I have a phil broke
- 37:35Speaker 1: the fourth wall. I don't want you to think I'm bragging.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I don't want you to think I'm bragging. I won't
- 37:43Speaker 1: because it doesn't ever do anything that benefits me. I
- 37:46Speaker 1: have a like a a future seeing clairvoyance, but only
- 37:53Speaker 1: on things that have nothing to do with me. Example like,
- 37:58Speaker 1: for instance, I could beat someone in a are and
- 38:01Speaker 1: they would say I just moved into the new roommate,
- 38:03Speaker 1: and I also know that in a week that roommate
- 38:06Speaker 1: won't be in that house anymore?
- 38:10Speaker 3: Are these.
- 38:13Speaker 8: Another example, the dude in the airport who's LARPing being
- 38:17Speaker 8: a cowboy.
- 38:19Speaker 7: What was it? Is there like something that trips your
- 38:21Speaker 7: intuition where you're like.
- 38:22Speaker 1: There's sixth cent it's probably because all this ship looks
- 38:24Speaker 1: new new. Yeah, where's like, because you know, is a
- 38:31Speaker 1: company that sells that buys gloves from actual farmers and ranchers.
- 38:38Speaker 1: There's companies that would sell Yeah, they buy gloves from
- 38:42Speaker 1: farmers and ranchers used, and they're called ranch worn gloves.
- 38:46Speaker 1: So you can get gloves that seems like you work. Wow,
- 38:50Speaker 1: did he have those? It's again engage with him. That's
- 38:55Speaker 1: the vibe I was getting. Is part of this because
- 38:57Speaker 1: what's that company called ranch worn gloves? I think is
- 39:00Speaker 1: what's called someone looking up?
- 39:01Speaker 8: It's part of this because you look at that person
- 39:03Speaker 8: and you're like, there's no way a real ranch hand
- 39:05Speaker 8: would be advertising that in the airport.
- 39:07Speaker 3: I just don't know why he'd have spurs on.
- 39:10Speaker 1: I feel like he'd have slipped out of his spurs
- 39:12Speaker 1: right over the time. Yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 5: I don't think a real ranch hand or guy working
- 39:17Speaker 5: cattle is going to actually wear that shit to the airport.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Let's do a survey. Let's call everyone you know. We'll
- 39:23Speaker 1: all call everyone we know that works in livestock and
- 39:25Speaker 1: will say, do you wear spurs to the airport? Dude?
- 39:28Speaker 1: I think you'll get an overwhelming no.
- 39:30Speaker 7: I feel like Garrett Long might wear spurs to an airport.
- 39:33Speaker 1: The way I just never he grew up in a
- 39:36Speaker 1: ranch family and rides and still doesn't wear spurs.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Anyways, Tommy agrees that you shouldn't wear spurs the airport.
- 39:42Speaker 10: I don't understand the impulse to go somewhere and then
- 39:44Speaker 10: dress up in a regional costume. Yeah, Like if I
- 39:48Speaker 10: go to a city, I don't put on like a
- 39:51Speaker 10: business suit and carry a briefcase around. That's a good point,
- 39:55Speaker 10: you know, Like I was trying to think of other
- 39:57Speaker 10: examples where.
- 39:58Speaker 1: You'd get where you'd go to the town and dress
- 40:00Speaker 1: like you're from the like you're from that time, right,
- 40:03Speaker 1: Like this is fun.
- 40:05Speaker 4: I don't know, like if you were in like a
- 40:07Speaker 4: real fishy location and then you had like a sun
- 40:10Speaker 4: shirt and shorts.
- 40:11Speaker 9: But there's like a practical you know, the merse with
- 40:16Speaker 9: your flag ear in it. Yeah, the slave pack, man,
- 40:20Speaker 9: you're still stuck on a sling the slave pa.
- 40:28Speaker 6: I know what it is.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I gotta move on.
- 40:30Speaker 6: You should call it the sleave pack though. That's way cooler.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Guy wrote in I was saying, how some names this
- 40:36Speaker 1: is another that's just this just strikes me as funny.
- 40:38Speaker 1: I can't prove this scientifically. Some names you can just
- 40:41Speaker 1: tell the family has a lot of money. Who we
- 40:44Speaker 1: were talking about, Oh, the guy that died in the
- 40:46Speaker 1: the guy that died in the Titan, and the Stocked
- 40:50Speaker 1: and Rush like Carnegie like money. Just call like if
- 40:54Speaker 1: your name is Stocked and Rush, it's like, no kidding, right. Well,
- 40:59Speaker 1: a guy rode in and he said his name's Wolf
- 41:04Speaker 1: von Mueller the Third and he says he.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Is not rich.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I was gonna say any name that starts with the
- 41:10Speaker 1: band category. Yeah, so I was gonna start going by
- 41:13Speaker 1: Stephen von Rinella. But just see if money rolled my way.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Position.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Wolf von Mueller the Thirds pointed out that he's broke.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And we had a guy named Rich who wrote in
- 41:24Speaker 1: and said I'm not rich. And this guy wrote in
- 41:28Speaker 1: a different guy, his wife's pregnant with the third child. Uh,
- 41:32Speaker 1: part of the agreement he made with his wife around
- 41:35Speaker 1: having a third child. This strikes home with me because
- 41:39Speaker 1: I'm really regretting not having a fourth child. But uh,
- 41:42Speaker 1: it's really hitting me lately. His wife wanted a third child.
- 41:46Speaker 1: He said, sure, that's fine, but I get to name
- 41:49Speaker 1: it and you can't veto my names.
- 41:54Speaker 6: And she was cool with that. They they struck a deal.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Guess what. Guess what this guy's name.
- 41:58Speaker 6: Is that rode in the guy or the name he
- 42:01Speaker 6: gave it.
- 42:02Speaker 1: He's not named it yet. He's looking for advice. His
- 42:05Speaker 1: name is Jonathan mcgiver Buck. Whoa Jonathan mcguiver buck mhm, winding.
- 42:18Speaker 1: And he's kicking around for.
- 42:20Speaker 3: A boy Bridger Boon or buck, which would be.
- 42:31Speaker 6: A girl.
- 42:32Speaker 1: He's kicking around fawn oh man.
- 42:37Speaker 10: Or buck or he's really taking the you can't veto
- 42:42Speaker 10: this name and running with it.
- 42:43Speaker 9: Yeah, leaning into that, right, I'll see what I could
- 42:48Speaker 9: get away with.
- 42:49Speaker 6: Ill.
- 42:51Speaker 8: I hope he doesn't name his daughter buck. Great name
- 42:54Speaker 8: is daughter buck.
- 42:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you the two names I'm sitting on right now.
- 43:00Speaker 8: To name this girl fond.
- 43:05Speaker 6: Boy.
- 43:07Speaker 3: That makes a lot more sense than buck.
- 43:08Speaker 6: Buck.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Oh, so it would be his name. I thought he's
- 43:13Speaker 1: got options. Oh he's thinking about Bridger boone. Okay, Now
- 43:19Speaker 1: I still I like the letter. I like it even
- 43:21Speaker 1: more now. Bridger boone Buck is a bit much fon
- 43:25Speaker 1: dough buck is a bit much.
- 43:29Speaker 7: Yeah, agreed.
- 43:31Speaker 2: I think it's restrained. I think it's tasteful, very subtle.
- 43:34Speaker 7: He's not going far enough.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had so I've had a vast aectomy, and
- 43:41Speaker 1: and me and the missus been to got a long time.
- 43:47Speaker 1: We're not going to have any more kids. But the
- 43:48Speaker 1: two names I'm sitting on are.
- 43:52Speaker 3: If I did.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I was telling her this the other day. I said,
- 43:54Speaker 1: if you know, I wish we did have another baby,
- 43:56Speaker 1: and if we did, I would want to name it.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I would like to name If I had a girl,
- 44:01Speaker 1: I would name it. I'm just telling you these names
- 44:03Speaker 1: are for grabs anybody having kids. My dad was named frank,
- 44:07Speaker 1: so if I had a girl, I would name her Frankie.
- 44:09Speaker 1: And if I had a boy, I'd name him Earl.
- 44:13Speaker 1: So you can use those names. Why Earl because someone
- 44:17Speaker 1: mentioned the last name.
- 44:18Speaker 6: He likes to fry a lot of fish and Earl.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Guy.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I grew up around.
- 44:30Speaker 6: Earl. Is that Earl hot yet?
- 44:37Speaker 3: All right, that's the end of my notes.
- 44:44Speaker 9: Hey, we never talked about our trail camera We go, Yeah,
- 44:49Speaker 9: there's something I want to talk about.
- 44:50Speaker 6: Start with that.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, tell me about your trail cameras. I
- 44:53Speaker 3: forgot about that.
- 44:54Speaker 9: Well, we were all just kind of lamenting the fact
- 44:58Speaker 9: that just happened to be that when we've got this
- 45:01Speaker 9: super fun trip. Is also the time when all of
- 45:03Speaker 9: us are kicking off many of our white tail seasons,
- 45:06Speaker 9: and these days we've all got pictures popping in on
- 45:08Speaker 9: our phones letting us.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Know what's going on. Yep.
- 45:11Speaker 9: Uh, So I, for example, there's a deer that I'm
- 45:15Speaker 9: hunting on a four acre piece that yeah has uh
- 45:20Speaker 9: has shown up three times in daylight since I've been
- 45:22Speaker 9: here on four acres. Yeah, I should, I should clarify
- 45:27Speaker 9: it's not four acres. The whole property is sixty, but
- 45:30Speaker 9: all of it butt four acres is the standing cornfield.
- 45:33Speaker 1: So all to hunt is a little four acre sliver
- 45:35Speaker 1: on as long as he runs out of the cornfield.
- 45:37Speaker 9: Yeah, but he's running around feeling safe now that I'm
- 45:40Speaker 9: in Louisiana the third and open season.
- 45:44Speaker 8: Yeah, so marked by that ration Michigan, if you if
- 45:47Speaker 8: you were in a tree stand, a little tree stand,
- 45:49Speaker 8: you'd be like, I'm hunting this buck on two square feet.
- 45:55Speaker 1: You're right, that would not be the right way to
- 45:56Speaker 1: describe it.
- 45:57Speaker 7: He hasn't daylighted yet on this two square feet.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:02Speaker 9: So sixty four acre parcel, fifty six acres, fifty six
- 46:05Speaker 9: acre parcel, And then how has Does he have a name? No,
- 46:10Speaker 9: he's a tall he's got really really tall brows. How
- 46:13Speaker 9: about if I would refer to him, we practice that
- 46:15Speaker 9: tall brow buck. My kids call him tall brow.
- 46:18Speaker 1: I guess that's good.
- 46:20Speaker 3: And that's the deer you're gonna try to get.
- 46:22Speaker 9: That's one of the deer i'd be after. He's the
- 46:23Speaker 9: one that I'm most excited about. Yeah, he is a
- 46:28Speaker 9: cool buck, and it's a it's fun to have a
- 46:33Speaker 9: deer like that on a little place where you wouldn't
- 46:35Speaker 9: normally think, you know, it'd be Uhland.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Just a local farmer. I got permission. Frohm, it's gonna
- 46:43Speaker 1: take me a hot second here to find it. Sorry, Okay, Yannie,
- 46:48Speaker 1: what's your what's your trail cameraport for over there in Scannie?
- 46:51Speaker 4: I haven't had a mature buck show up on any
- 46:53Speaker 4: of my two dozen cameras in like three weeks now.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Uh really, they all went into a whole.
- 47:00Speaker 6: I don't know. They're probably just hanging out in the
- 47:02Speaker 6: court and in the standing corn. I'm guessing. I don't know.
- 47:05Speaker 4: We're just not traveling much. But h so I'm not
- 47:09Speaker 4: missing I thought this it was pretty good timing. Honestly,
- 47:12Speaker 4: because September is for the elk and then November is
- 47:16Speaker 4: for the deer in my opinion, so I'd love to
- 47:18Speaker 4: do some fishing.
- 47:20Speaker 3: For the red fish.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool one, isn't it?
- 47:25Speaker 7: Yanni? Were you getting pictures around.
- 47:27Speaker 3: This brow times as tall as the rest of his time?
- 47:29Speaker 4: I know, crazy, But again I told you that I
- 47:32Speaker 4: have bad service down by the fields, so I don't
- 47:35Speaker 4: really have any cameras set up on.
- 47:37Speaker 6: The food I got.
- 47:38Speaker 3: So Yanny's gotten off here.
- 47:40Speaker 6: That's a dandy mark.
- 47:43Speaker 3: And then, uh, Tony, what do you got going on?
- 47:45Speaker 3: Notice I skip Randall?
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yeah I did notice that.
- 47:48Speaker 10: Actually, yeah, I thought maybe we were doing first row
- 47:51Speaker 10: and then second row at the end.
- 47:54Speaker 7: I have.
- 47:55Speaker 8: I've had some deer show up this week that made
- 47:57Speaker 8: me a little bit thinking that should be home with
- 47:59Speaker 8: my daughters. I had a couple over in Wisconsin, but
- 48:02Speaker 8: I the last week of September in the first week
- 48:05Speaker 8: of October. I often have that happen, and I think
- 48:08Speaker 8: it's because even though where we're where those cameras are
- 48:12Speaker 8: that I'm talking about. Baiting got banned last year there
- 48:15Speaker 8: over a cwdpop on one of the game farms in
- 48:18Speaker 8: a neighboring county, so baiting was legal, it's not now.
- 48:23Speaker 8: I know that some of my neighbors are for sure.
- 48:26Speaker 8: So I think what happens there is we get a
- 48:29Speaker 8: prevalence of baiting right around the opener, and people get
- 48:31Speaker 8: bored with it into the season a little bit. So
- 48:33Speaker 8: it's it's my deer disappear right away, and then they
- 48:38Speaker 8: start trickling back in. And then once people are getting
- 48:41Speaker 8: excited about gun season, my dear will start to disappear
- 48:45Speaker 8: again because they're back out on the bait right right.
- 48:48Speaker 8: And so the entire time I've been hunting over there,
- 48:50Speaker 8: which is quite a while now, it's a very consistent
- 48:53Speaker 8: pattern where I'll have deer all summer long, not a
- 48:57Speaker 8: lot of deer because it's low deer density place, but
- 49:00Speaker 8: they will vanish around the opener, and then they'll start
- 49:04Speaker 8: trickling back in. So I actually do way better hunting
- 49:08Speaker 8: over there, even you know, on the public land over there,
- 49:11Speaker 8: by hitting that kind of window when a lot of
- 49:15Speaker 8: people are sort of the excitement over the opener's gone,
- 49:19Speaker 8: the anticipation of the rot hunt or the rifle hunt
- 49:22Speaker 8: isn't there yet, and everybody's just kind of backing off,
- 49:25Speaker 8: and I think it's correlated to just the bait piles
- 49:27Speaker 8: in the woods.
- 49:30Speaker 3: So and so that's what's boning Yanni two.
- 49:33Speaker 8: I well that when That's why I asked him if
- 49:35Speaker 8: he had deer around the opener, because if you, I mean,
- 49:37Speaker 8: you talk to a CEO and they'll say a lot
- 49:40Speaker 8: of times the complaints they get that lead debating citations
- 49:43Speaker 8: are because people are like I had these deer every day,
- 49:46Speaker 8: and all of a sudden, they all started disappearing, and
- 49:49Speaker 8: I know my neighbor's kind of sketchy or whatever, and
- 49:51Speaker 8: they'll go in there. It's so I wondered if yours
- 49:56Speaker 8: disappeared before the season or right around the opener and
- 50:00Speaker 8: they haven't come back yet.
- 50:04Speaker 6: Could be one of our customers. The guests that was
- 50:08Speaker 6: with us this week lives not far from our place,
- 50:11Speaker 6: and he said he were chatting about it, and he
- 50:15Speaker 6: said that we're probably one of the few places that
- 50:17Speaker 6: doesn't bait, even though it's illegal to bait in our county.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Yeah, he was describing a situation that surprised me. Where
- 50:23Speaker 1: it's illegal debate, but baiting is done openly.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 50:27Speaker 8: Where where I'm at, it's crazy. I mean, I do
- 50:31Speaker 8: a lot of grouse and woodcock hunting up there too.
- 50:33Speaker 8: It's big woods kind of stuff. The amount of bait
- 50:37Speaker 8: piles I find out on public land just roaman, you know,
- 50:41Speaker 8: and it's it'll be ladderstand bait piles, el camera, you know, lather, rinse, repeat,
- 50:48Speaker 8: and they're not supposed to be there.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Yeah. So the so the agency just doesn't have but
- 50:51Speaker 1: they're just it's just not on there. They don't really
- 50:53Speaker 1: care about it.
- 50:54Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 50:54Speaker 8: I mean, I know in Minnesota for a while, I
- 50:57Speaker 8: did a I did a seminar one time, and there
- 51:00Speaker 8: was a conservation officer there who did it. He spoke
- 51:03Speaker 8: as well, and I was talking to him and he
- 51:06Speaker 8: said this was quite a few years back, but he
- 51:08Speaker 8: said that they had busted during the gun season. The
- 51:12Speaker 8: previous season. They had busted six different people who had
- 51:16Speaker 8: two guns with him, and one was like an old
- 51:18Speaker 8: shitty lever action that they didn't care to lose, and
- 51:20Speaker 8: one was their nice deer rifle. So if they saw
- 51:23Speaker 8: a conservation officer walking in, they knew that gun was
- 51:26Speaker 8: going to get confiscated, so they'd leave the good rifle
- 51:29Speaker 8: up in the box blind or wherever. Try to stash it,
- 51:31Speaker 8: and they had an older rifle they didn't want to lose.
- 51:36Speaker 6: Six different times they encountered.
- 51:38Speaker 8: That, right, So if you think if that, if it's true,
- 51:42Speaker 8: I have no reason to believe he was lying to us.
- 51:45Speaker 7: That's crazy.
- 51:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 51:48Speaker 7: Crazy.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Now.
- 51:49Speaker 8: I will also say this, if they're walking in on
- 51:52Speaker 8: like gun opener on somebody, they've probably been paying attention
- 51:56Speaker 8: to that person for a while. That person might be
- 51:58Speaker 8: the kind who has some citations in their past.
- 52:01Speaker 1: You know.
- 52:01Speaker 8: It's not like a random encounter with somebody who might
- 52:05Speaker 8: be baiting somewhere and they're like, oh, they have two rifles.
- 52:07Speaker 8: It's like we're going, we're working these people, you know.
- 52:10Speaker 9: So something Tony and I were talking about in the
- 52:12Speaker 9: drive here the other day, and I don't know if
- 52:14Speaker 9: you guys have debated this on some previous episode, but
- 52:16Speaker 9: has there ever been a discussion around the cost I
- 52:20Speaker 9: don't know if it's a cost benefit analysis or an
- 52:22Speaker 9: obligation thought process here, but the idea of basically ratting
- 52:28Speaker 9: out a neighbor who you know bates, do you turn
- 52:31Speaker 9: that into the CEO because it's the right thing to do,
- 52:34Speaker 9: knowing though there could be significant blowback to you in
- 52:37Speaker 9: the neighborhood if it gets back on you as being
- 52:39Speaker 9: the person that did that, and.
- 52:41Speaker 1: I'm going to give you a totally honest answer. Okay,
- 52:45Speaker 1: it would depend a lot on the neighbor, my relationship
- 52:48Speaker 1: with the neighbor, and my understanding of what the neighbors
- 52:50Speaker 1: sort of I would there would be so many things
- 52:54Speaker 1: it being a neighbor, h what their kind of experiences
- 52:59Speaker 1: have been, you know, like I know that when my
- 53:03Speaker 1: old man was near dying, he would scatter corn for
- 53:07Speaker 1: turkeys and then sit there and call. Yep. Did I
- 53:11Speaker 1: call and turn my dad in? Though?
- 53:15Speaker 3: That's my dad?
- 53:17Speaker 1: All right?
- 53:18Speaker 3: So now if we just kind of be like, oh.
- 53:20Speaker 1: My god, all right, what was our attitude toward us?
- 53:24Speaker 1: I feel like ourtitude was like really dad, but.
- 53:27Speaker 8: That that stuff can go south if you call. If
- 53:30Speaker 8: you I have a really good buddy of mine who
- 53:34Speaker 8: has forty acres and somebody bought the ten acres next
- 53:37Speaker 8: to him, and that guy was baiting deerhart illegally in Minnesota,
- 53:43Speaker 8: and my buddy called him in. He was very guy
- 53:47Speaker 8: was very gratuitous about it. So the conservation officer staked
- 53:51Speaker 8: him out of my buddy's land, built the case busted
- 53:54Speaker 8: the guy. Guy had several citations previously, and the guy
- 53:59Speaker 8: fought it in court. And when the state turned over
- 54:02Speaker 8: whatever evidence they had and reports, and they they left
- 54:06Speaker 8: my buddy's name on there instead of having it was
- 54:09Speaker 8: supposed to be anonymous. So then his neighbor found out
- 54:12Speaker 8: he was the one who turned him in. And now
- 54:15Speaker 8: when my buddy walks out back to go hunt with
- 54:17Speaker 8: his kids, that guy, if he sees him, which because
- 54:21Speaker 8: they're pretty visible, he'll go down there with his ar
- 54:23Speaker 8: fifteen on the fence line, shoot all night long, shot
- 54:27Speaker 8: their cat, shot his daughter's cat in their yard.
- 54:31Speaker 7: It's a bad deal.
- 54:32Speaker 3: So that's what I'm talking about.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Man.
- 54:34Speaker 3: It's like it would just depend on something.
- 54:35Speaker 1: It could be a situation where it's just I'm just
- 54:38Speaker 1: trying to be honest. There's certain violations where I categorically
- 54:42Speaker 1: absolutely would, but like some i'd just be I'd have
- 54:45Speaker 1: to kind of weigh out. I'd have to kind of
- 54:48Speaker 1: weigh out, like, is it sort of an old habit
- 54:53Speaker 1: of an old man and they're not gonna be doing
- 54:58Speaker 1: this for decades because they're kind of in the autumn
- 55:00Speaker 1: of their life and they don't know any different. They
- 55:02Speaker 1: don't kill anything anyway, I don't know. I just i'd
- 55:05Speaker 1: had to look at it, you know.
- 55:06Speaker 8: So the thing that I wrestle with, but this year specifically,
- 55:10Speaker 8: is I know, I know some of my neighbors are
- 55:15Speaker 8: doing it, and I go, okay, well, I'm an auto stater.
- 55:19Speaker 8: I don't live there, so there that, you know, like
- 55:23Speaker 8: that's part of the calculus, like should I should I
- 55:25Speaker 8: call them in or not? And but on the opposite side,
- 55:29Speaker 8: I look at this and I go, I only get
- 55:30Speaker 8: a couple of weekends help with my daughters, and those
- 55:34Speaker 8: guys are pulling all the deer away, and of course
- 55:36Speaker 8: they don't care about the four ki's and the six
- 55:39Speaker 8: pointers that my daughters want to shoot all day long.
- 55:42Speaker 8: And so I look at it and go, am I
- 55:44Speaker 8: being smart by just being like whatever, let it go,
- 55:48Speaker 8: it'll it'll work itself out, like I don't want to
- 55:51Speaker 8: get into that, or am I being kind of a
- 55:53Speaker 8: coward because in a way, these people are stealing deer
- 55:58Speaker 8: from my kids or opportunities, And so I like, I
- 56:02Speaker 8: wrestle with that dilemma because I know my daughters would
- 56:06Speaker 8: have more productive hunts if that wasn't happening.
- 56:08Speaker 9: But you could also go down the line and say, well,
- 56:10Speaker 9: what if they find out it was.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Me who turned them in? Turn them in, and then
- 56:13Speaker 1: they come back and make our lives miserable.
- 56:15Speaker 3: Like your buddy, right.
- 56:17Speaker 8: Well that's that's a big part of the calculus for
- 56:19Speaker 8: me because I don't live there, and I think I
- 56:23Speaker 8: think if they got called in anonymously, they'd be like,
- 56:26Speaker 8: I know.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Who, Yeah, you know what to be the move. And
- 56:30Speaker 1: this is something I learned. I learned this the hard
- 56:31Speaker 1: way when I was in high school. I just like
- 56:35Speaker 1: reflecting on this now. I lived close to a unit
- 56:41Speaker 1: boundary for water trapping or for like the state was
- 56:45Speaker 1: divided into three those zone zones one, two three. I
- 56:51Speaker 1: lived near a zone boundary, so there was a November
- 56:53Speaker 1: one water trapping opener, and then there was a I
- 56:58Speaker 1: can't remember to tell that stagger, you know, like a
- 57:00Speaker 1: week later or something. One time I'm scouting and I
- 57:07Speaker 1: pull over. You know what's crazy is uh their dad
- 57:10Speaker 1: went to check. I went to I was visiting my
- 57:13Speaker 1: mom not too long ago and actually went over and
- 57:15Speaker 1: checked under that bridge for tracks, just because I was
- 57:18Speaker 1: feeling nostalgic. But I said I was scouting and checked
- 57:20Speaker 1: under a bridge for coon and mink tracks and there's
- 57:23Speaker 1: a trap set there but it wasn't open yet.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Okay, they were on.
- 57:30Speaker 1: The they this was on This was south of that border,
- 57:35Speaker 1: so it was a later opener. But if you'd gone
- 57:38Speaker 1: a few miles of the our direction, it was open. Anyways,
- 57:41Speaker 1: I'm pissed because I always set that bridge and someone's
- 57:45Speaker 1: already trapping the bridge and it's not the season.
- 57:47Speaker 3: I call and report the person. Okay.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Then I get a call from the fur buyer who
- 57:59Speaker 1: just lays into me about why in the world one
- 58:07Speaker 1: it was another young trapper, he made a mistake, and
- 58:12Speaker 1: why in the world would you not have left a
- 58:15Speaker 1: note or pulled his trap tag and called him? Why
- 58:18Speaker 1: in the world would that have been your solution? M right,
- 58:25Speaker 1: and ripped into me for like selling out another trapper.
- 58:31Speaker 1: So as I'm thinking about this, you could go and say, man,
- 58:36Speaker 1: can can we sit and talk for a minute. I want,
- 58:39Speaker 1: I need to talked about something, right, you know another But.
- 58:45Speaker 9: I mean, I think it's a good idea. But that
- 58:48Speaker 9: does then eliminate your option to ever turn him in, because.
- 58:51Speaker 10: If someone else, if someone else turns him in, and
- 58:58Speaker 10: I don't know these people it's another it's.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Not I didn't know that. I didn't know. I should
- 59:04Speaker 1: have probably said that. I didn't even check their trap tag.
- 59:07Speaker 1: I just called the game warden. Someone's trapping leag onto
- 59:10Speaker 1: the bridge, right, I don't know man, that one and
- 59:15Speaker 1: I would have gotten the same result if I had
- 59:18Speaker 1: done what what the fur buyer said I should have done,
- 59:20Speaker 1: the same result would happened, right well, Tricky, thanks for
- 59:29Speaker 1: joining folks, Tricky, Tricky.
- 59:34Speaker 5: I got elk on my trail cameras and one.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Black tail in Alaska. Oh yeah, that's got giant elkin trail.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Real quick, let's do this before we wrap up. Impressions
- 59:50Speaker 1: of of our first uh, our first round.
- 59:56Speaker 6: Karen's over there doing this. That means you have to
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: I go out fishing.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I'm doing that right now. Impressions of the first round.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Yas, Oh yeah, I've been having a great time. Yeah.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: By the time i'll leave here, I'll probably be able
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: to get hired on as a deckhand. I think on
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: one of these offshore boats, I'm getting a little crusty,
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: you know. H it's been drinking like they come in
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: styrofoam cups when they make a cocktail around here.
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: About yeah, BIG's about three of them in there, so
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: you only need one per evening. But you know one
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: of those every day about five. You're to sleep by
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: eight and you get up at four and just would
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: you say, lather, rinse, repeat, keep fishing. Yeah, fish again. No,
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: it's been great.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: Unfortunately, the weather, this hurricane is about to hit Florida
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: is making for crazy seas.
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: So we didn't get offshore this week.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Oh it's hard to complain about it when you know
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: what's about to happen in a couple of days. But yeah,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: it's we haven't fished offshore.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: But we fished in But everybody's been having a great time.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: I've caught more red fish this week than I have
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: in my whole life.
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: So yeah, if that when.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: We're out yesterday when I fell off the boat, our
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: problem was everything was over the slot. We had six
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: we had six uh reds that were over the slot over.
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: Which they call bull from here.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: And this is like in a couple of feet of water. Man,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: they're impressive fish. When that tail comes out of the
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: water and you see that your line's going into the
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: water in one area and then way away the tail
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: comes out of the water. You know, that's a big fish.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: So fun.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and we've caught a few of those black drum
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: have been in that, maybe even bigger than the biggest
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: bull red drum that we've.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: Caught, right, yeah, yeah, we've caught bull those bull black
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: drum or whatever they call yeah yeah, right, yeah.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: So how we been doing it? We meet, we have
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: breakfast at six, head out at seven because we're fishing
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: inshore fish till I don't know noon or so, clean fish,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: vaccial fish. We got a freezer truck part down here,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: so everybody, all of our guests, they get all their
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: fish cleaned up. We vaccialed all their fish with them,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: their fish going to their little storage bin. And then
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: they left today and they take all their fish boxes.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: Yeah, did you guys see any of the fish boxes
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: going out? Did anybody have a full on fifty pound box?
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: I carried several of them this morning.
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: There were fifty pound boxes. That's awesome.
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: Well, I don't know if they were fifty pounds, but
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: they were pretty heavy. I mean the boxes that I
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: carried this morning.
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: Were not light. There was a lot of fish.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: In there, and that's inshore fish, right.
- 1:02:53Speaker 8: Well, I would I would just say this about this experience.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: The second day that we fish. I've spent a lot
- 1:03:01Speaker 8: of time fishing in my life. I don't know if
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: I've ever seen so many fish come into the boat
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: in one like half day. We were fishing this trout
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: hole and it was like a double dropper, so it
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: was two swim baits, you know, two feet apart whatever.
- 1:03:19Speaker 8: You dropped them to the bottom. And there were four
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: of us fishing in that boat. And there were like
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: multiple times where we all we had eight fish, all
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: doubles in the boat at the same time. And you
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: think about how quickly you can you can rack up
- 1:03:35Speaker 8: some numbers, catch eight fish at a time.
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: It was crazy.
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: Yeah, you guys were over one hundred trout that day, right.
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: We went over Yeah, because there were specs in there
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: was the silvers or white.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: There's no limit on white trous No.
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: No, we went over that with the graph and it
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: was a wall of fish in like a like a
- 1:03:56Speaker 8: nineteen foot hole, and each the guide showed it to
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: me on the graph and I was like, holy cow.
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: And then we started dropping down and the competition down there.
- 1:04:05Speaker 8: There was a guy on this trip named Andy who
- 1:04:07Speaker 8: was He made me feel inferior as a fisherman. That
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: guy could catch fish like he didn't even try. And
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: I looked at him at one point and he was
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: I could tell he had a fish biting, and he's like,
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: I can tell that's a little one, so I'm gonna
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: let it swimm around ntil it spits it in. A
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: big one usually hits it after. And I was like,
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: this guy's sorting fish on the bottom of the bayou
- 1:04:29Speaker 8: before he brings him in.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: I was fishing with Andy yesterday and he was.
- 1:04:34Speaker 7: Did he make you feel like less of a man?
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: And then I was spending a few hours talking with
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: him here at dinner in the evening and realized that
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: the man fishes a lot.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: He's the guy we gave the Hot Stick Award to.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: So it's not because he's got a lucky horseshoe of
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: his butt. He actually has skills.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: Yeah, he's good. He's good at trivia to yeah. Yeah,
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: smart fella.
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: No.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Yeah. We had a great crew down here. Everybody laughed
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: a lot. I thought it was fun. Yeah, it was
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: a great time, good time. And in a little bit
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: we got some got another crew coming. Yeah, for a
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: couple of hours.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Yeah, within twelve hours, I'll be catching another redfish. Really yeah,
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: probably all right, yeah eighteen yeah, late night.
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: It's got the early shift tomorrow eighteen hours.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: Everybody, thanks for joining, see you soon.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: It will never go right.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: No, that's a visit.
- 1:06:27Speaker 11: If you got to see it, that would write SI kids.
- 1:06:33Speaker 11: Gay people fight on the liver several ways falls.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: They'll put them together.
- 1:06:41Speaker 9: Because now no go.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: It never know.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: No h my gout
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: Listen is it show
