- 2:30came late last week at an event held Thursday night in Putnham County and that
- 2:35area continues to just explode and they have got some exciting business news and we'll
- 2:39share that with you coming up a little bit later on in the show.
- 2:43But it is Monday, which means we bring a different mayor in to the
- 2:46show. Which week want to welcome in our good friend from the Land of
- 2:47the Black Eagles, talking about South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullins Junior. Good morning,
- 2:52sir, how are you good morning? Days going fine? Thank you
- 2:55thanks for being here. How are things in South Charleston? I do want
- 3:00to ask this though. Now we're just I guess a couple of weeks away
- 3:02from when you did Summerfest, how a Summerfest. Summerfest was great, well
- 3:07attended. May have been our biggest weekend ever. I think this estimated crowd
- 3:10on Friday was like seven thousand, So it was. It was a great
- 3:14event as usual, good time to meet everybody, talk to folks you haven't
- 3:16seen for a while. Just just a big success. It's just one of
- 3:20those big events the you know, of what you look forward to every year,
- 3:22and all the you know, most of the towns in the area and
- 3:23the cities have events like to have. A Summerfest is certainly one that everybody
- 3:27looks forward to, and it draws in as we always talk about Mayor,
- 3:30it draws in people from all over the region. It does it does dinner
- 3:32over a little over twenty years now and so it's it's one of people's favorite,
- 3:36I think, from around the valley. So again, good time,
- 3:38good time. What else have we got going on? Do we have anything
- 3:42exciting like that going on over the next couple of months in South Charleston.
- 3:45Well, you know what, we just kind of wounded down our wided down.
- 3:47Our busy time was Summerfest and then we had our Moundfest Arts and Crafts.
- 3:51So now we're kind of in that in that in between now and the
- 3:53next thing we really have is is the Christmas Parade. So what us through
- 3:57some normal city business developments, all the good things we got going on?
- 4:00Try to get those across the finish line? What kind of city developments do
- 4:02we have going on? What can you tell us? Well, same thing.
- 4:04I think it's pretty much the same thing we talked about before day with
- 4:06the Jefferson Road and the flash pawn, our fiber build and our subdivision up
- 4:12a little creek golf course, all those things going. And we did complete
- 4:14our new fire station down Quarter g so that's done up and operating serving those
- 4:17folks out that way. So things are going well? How are things looking
- 4:20at them all? Let's break that down specifically, good going real well?
- 4:25Of course you saw obviously Chick fil A's there and doing well. Starbucks is
- 4:28getting ready to start construction this month and any day now they'll get started,
- 4:31and hopefully Minars will two as well a late fall, so we've got their
- 4:35site pad ready as well. So to see some good things have plus we're
- 4:39about six months ahead of time on the field, so that clock's ticking down
- 4:42there for the settlement process, which is a six to twelve months I think
- 4:45the clocks started July one, so that was nice news to get from up
- 4:48though. We about six months ahead of time on that. Now, for
- 4:50somebody that doesn't know anything about this, which I don't, may or why
- 4:53are you ahead of schedule? How did what goes into being ahead of schedule?
- 4:58Well, it's just the PHIL. The phil proces us went a little
- 5:00bit faster than one was anticipated. That that's all. It's pretty simple.
- 5:02But once that was done, then the site that is on field, the
- 5:08other side of where Chick fil As at the other side where the pond actually
- 5:11was, that's where the settlement process has to take place, which it's about
- 5:13a sixty to twelve months waiting period. And once that's over with then you'll
- 5:16see all these all these stores and restaurants we have lined up, you'll see
- 5:20a bunch of them being built all at the same time. And there's a
- 5:23lot of development going on within the city as South Charles, not just as
- 5:27it relates to the mall. You've always got something new going on and do
- 5:29business coming in talk about that, yeah, we do. And I think
- 5:32WU Medicine coming to spring Hill has been a big help to us down there
- 5:35as they're doing some doing some great things. They had their helopathic obviously is
- 5:40up and running. They moved their their physical therapy over the river Walk,
- 5:43and they've added I think close to forty or fifty new new physicians or anticipating
- 5:47that. So that's going well. We do have a couple of business and
- 5:50not quite ready to announce the names yet, but we have sold some property
- 5:54in spring Hill near the hospital as well for two new businesses to go in
- 5:57there, and hopefully it'll start building some time to fall as well. Let's
- 6:00let's talk about the subdivision a little bit. I hadn't hadn't heard a lot
- 6:03about that, uh, And you know, I have people on the show
- 6:06all the time, different governmental officials, and they all talk about the lack
- 6:11of housing here in the Kanaal Valley. It's a problem. I mean,
- 6:14it really is. Talk about the subdivision, Yeah, it is. It
- 6:16is the problems. It's been a need for for decades around here as well.
- 6:20We talked about this back and when I was a public works director.
- 6:23But we do have a new subdivision. It's a small subdivision. It's up
- 6:26a little Creek golf course, and uh, there's gonna be twenty one new
- 6:29homes built there. There's already I believe three families that are living in that
- 6:31area is right now, and the other properties you see under roof are all
- 6:35sold. So it's a very popular small subdivision. But it's needed. Like
- 6:40you say, Dave, housing is an issue, and particularly new housing.
- 6:44Yeah, and you have a lot of people And I was talking to a
- 6:46realtor friend of mine the other day. What is happening is too is that
- 6:50you know, we have we have people that are moving into the area.
- 6:55I mean, and you know, with with the with the plants that you
- 6:57know, the different projects that are coming, and we have people moving in
- 7:00the area. And sometimes I mean, my wife and I were just having
- 7:02this discussion last night. You know, we're perfectly happy in our house.
- 7:06We could probably sell our house and make a make decent money on it right
- 7:10now, but then where would we go. That's the problem is because because
- 7:13there is a lack of a housing. I'm want to talk about Little Creek
- 7:15for a moment, Little Creek golf Course, that whole area up there because
- 7:17I think that's kind of a hidden gym. Uh in this here, A
- 7:21lot of people may not know about it. It's a beautiful course, great
- 7:24restaurant up there. Uh talk about how that benefits South Charleston. It is.
- 7:30It is probably one of the best kept seekers, particularly the restaurant,
- 7:31the Eagles Nest restaurant. They do a great job up there, have a
- 7:34great lunch buffet, have a good breakfast, bunk brunts on Sunday. The
- 7:39golf course is doing well. We surpassed twenty thousand rounds of golf last year.
- 7:42We'll see what we're wrap this year. That was kind of our goal
- 7:44back in the day, get the twenty thousand rounds, and that's where we
- 7:46got to. And it's again it's you're right, it's a it's a really
- 7:49it's it's a hidden gym. And so we've we've tried to market it really
- 7:53well. But at the end of the day, the restaurant, I think,
- 7:56I think can do a little bit better. But it's it's going good.
- 7:58And we sunk a lot of money in into it over the years,
- 8:01invested a lot into it to bring it up the bar and so it's Uh,
- 8:05I enjoy it and we have a happy hour up there on Fridays from
- 8:07peak four thirty to seventh thirty. That's been pretty popular. We can do
- 8:11free appetizers. People come up and have some cocktails after a long days,
- 8:13long week's work. So things are going well up there. And Dean again,
- 8:18we're talking with Frank Maudel Junior, the Mayor South Charleston here on five
- 8:20eighty Live on our Mayor Monday's segment. So let's talk about now coming up
- 8:24on our next segment, I'm gonna have Conacunda Chmistry Ben s Lango on the
- 8:28show, and he made it. He and the Mayor Barbersville A Chris Tatum,
- 8:31came together for an announcement last week about this big soccer event that's that's
- 8:35going to be going on. We'll let to Commissier s Lango get into that
- 8:37a little bit more. But when we see these things mayor that are coming
- 8:43here, whether it's you know, Shawnee or whether any of these places South
- 8:48Charleston and he's Saint Alban's and Nitro, everybody benefits from these Everybody benefits.
- 8:52I've said that for years, and we did our investment at Little Creek Park
- 8:56with our turper field. Now we have about eight tournaments a year, softball,
- 9:00baseball tournaments and every you know, they'll bring sixty two, one hundred
- 9:01teams on our team. And you're right. Everybody benefits. Hotels from all
- 9:05over the area, from from Barbersville to Charleston and all in between. Everybody
- 9:09benefits, and it's a great economic impact and it's a great quality of life
- 9:13thing for people that live in our communities. We had a text to the
- 9:16show here Mayor, about the golf course of golf course, and we'll let
- 9:18you go. Someone ask if the golf course offers memberships. No, we
- 9:22do not. It's a public course, we don't. We do have a
- 9:24summer pass it to our swimming pool oper but the golf course we do not.
- 9:28It's just a daily, daily fee. Well, Mayor, I'll tell
- 9:31you it's an exciting time to be here in the Canal Valley, exciting time
- 9:33for South Charleston. And with the mall and with all the other business you
- 9:37got going on, it sounds like exciting things going on in South Charleston.
- 9:39Is always it's pleasure to have you on the show. We'll talk again soon,
- 9:41Mayor. Thanks a lot. They appreciate, appreciate. It is always
- 9:43partner. Take care now, have a good day. Hey you as well.

- 13:01way station. They cleared all the trees and shrubs from about an acre of
- 13:03slope. It's hundreds of feet from the roadway and has no burying on the
- 13:07highway. Costs a lot to clear and will cost a lot to mow.
- 13:11According to We've I've spent more time or more text about moween here as of
- 13:15late than I probably have in the three years I've done the show. Everybody's
- 13:18concerned, Commiser Ben Selango is here. Are you concerned about Moeen, Sir,
- 13:22I'm always concerned about mowing. Yeah, I'm never concerned about well,
- 13:26but I mean obviously people I don't mean to make a lot of it.
- 13:28I mean people have some some issues with it there and they're saying that and
- 13:31this is nothing that you can you can handle. But I mean as far
- 13:35as a lot of the a lot of the news out of the Department of
- 13:39Highways has been about moeen projects because they've kind of gone by the wayside.
- 13:41I guess, yeah, well, you know what, I Departament Highways has
- 13:46always helped us. I mean anytime we've had an issue. We had some
- 13:48problems out at Shawnee. We need a turn light. Jimmy Riston made that
- 13:52happen. We've had issues in the Upper Canall Valley after the floods, the
- 13:56Governor Jimmy Riston stepped up and helped. Even had you know, roads falling
- 14:01in and they they repaired them this same weekend. I mean it was so
- 14:05yeah. I mean it's a big operation, a big statewide operation, and
- 14:09there's you know, they're always going to have some issues. But I think
- 14:13they've done a remarkable job. I really do. And I don't think sometimes
- 14:16and I talk about you know, West Virginia is a relatively small state,
- 14:20and I've used the term one time. I said that it was a diverse
- 14:24state, and somebody let me up over how could they be a different Now,
- 14:26what I'm saying is what goes on in Martinsburg could not be any more
- 14:30different than what goes on in Pineville. It isn't, honestly, and everything
- 14:35is so different. Eastern Panhandle was completely different than five different states. No
- 14:39othern Panhandle was different. I mean, so wherever you travel and each each
- 14:43area, the state has a very unique issue with regard to roads. You
- 14:46know, you got a sudden wash in. They're literally bridges falling in.
- 14:50You can walk out onto a bridge and in McDow County and see the river
- 14:54or the creek below. Yeah, I mean so that you know they've got
- 14:56some serious, serious issue. Well, and some of the flooding that we
- 15:00had, you know, up in the Upper Kanalla Valley here recently some a
- 15:03great deal that some of the problems were being called because of infrastructure. Infrastructure
- 15:07problems, that's right, but you know, and like I said, you
- 15:09know, even the recent flooding, but every time we have an issue,
- 15:11Jimmy Riston and the governor stepped up to help. When we have those issues
- 15:16in the Upper Knalla Valley. Otherwise, I mean you get roads collapsing,
- 15:20and also some of the private companies up there have stepped up and helped out
- 15:24as well. See that a lot in West Virginia. I don't know that
- 15:26it goes on in other areas, but anytime there is a disaster, you
- 15:30know, usually you will have some private entities, you know, if somebody's
- 15:31got a bulldozer or somebody's got this, and they're right there on the scene.
- 15:35And that's just part of being in West Virginia. It's right one of
- 15:37the energy companies and this was the not the most recent flood, but the
- 15:41one before, came in and helped out with one of the private roads and
- 15:46even one of the public roads. They were up there putting gravel down and
- 15:48leveling things out and removing debris. And so yeah, we've got we've got
- 15:52a good a good group up there. Can I kind of comistier Ben s
- 15:56langoes here it's nine to twenty three, huge announcement commissioner. Last week as
- 15:58it pertains to a big regional soccer event. I saw my good buddy at
- 16:03Chris Tatum the Mere Barber's Ville out there. What's going on. Yeah,
- 16:06So you know, we've been we've been kicking and clawn to try to get
- 16:08this tournament, and we thought it was going to go to Virginia again or
- 16:11maybe even Pennsylvania. Back in May, we announced the USU Soccer Eastern President's
- 16:18Cup was going to be hosted by the Shawnee Sports Complex and also Barbersville.
- 16:21You know, Barbersville has really stepped up their games out there and put some
- 16:25new turf fields in and the facility looks incredible. So we did not think
- 16:30we were and that's a ten million dollar economic impact. You've got about one
- 16:33hundred and twenty five teams from oh nearly a dozen states, So we were
- 16:37trying to get the big one. You know, the big one is the
- 16:40Eastern Regional, the Championship Series, the National Championship Series, which we've hosted
- 16:45several times. That's a two hundred and fifty team tournament. Two hundred and
- 16:49fifty teams, right, how many people per team? Fifteen players per team,
- 16:55and statistically about three point five people travel with every are you talking about
- 17:00either siblings or parents or grandparents, So you calculate that out, that's thirteen
- 17:04thousand people coming into the area. Four or five days. Yeah, and
- 17:08the hotels love that, the restaurants love that. Hotels love it, restaurants
- 17:11love it. Everybody loves it. I mean, it's it's packed. So
- 17:15I tell people, if you have to wait in line to get your blooming
- 17:17on and at out back, I apologize, but that's exactly what we're trying
- 17:19to talk about, right, Hey, it's in beads, as Tim Brady
- 17:22would say, Yeah, that's that's exactly right. So we've got the we
- 17:26were you know, very fortunate, very proud to announce that we are getting
- 17:30the Eastern Regional National Championship Series next year as well. So that's two hundred
- 17:33fifty teams from nearly a dozen states, about thirteen thousand visitors are going to
- 17:37be here for a week. And so if you look at what we have
- 17:41lined up for next year, June fourteenth through the eighteenth, you have the
- 17:45President's Cup USU Soccer President's Cup. That's that's going to bring in about seven
- 17:48thousand people. And then you have we get ten days off. Then you
- 17:53have June twenty eight through July fourth, which is the big one, you
- 17:56know, the National Championship Series that ends third. That's you know about thirteen
- 18:00thousand people, twenty eight million dollar economic impact. And then we turn around
- 18:04and go straight in the regatta. Yeah, July third through the seventh,
- 18:08and that's going to be at least another thirty eight million dollars. So you
- 18:11look at those three weeks alone, when you combine the USU Soccer events with
- 18:15the regatta, that's seventy six million dollars of economic impact less than a month.
- 18:19That's amazing. And when we talk about this Commissioner, we talk about
- 18:23people that come in and the grandmas and everybody that comes. I want to
- 18:26see that point five person by the way, that that comes in with us.
- 18:30But it takes people on this end to put these events on and that's
- 18:37that's where the economic impact for us. You know that that's also going to
- 18:40be factored in. Yeah, and you know, we work with all the
- 18:41local businesses to make sure that they know what's coming in because if you all
- 18:45of a sudden, have you know, one hundred or two hundred extra people
- 18:48showing up at your restaurant and you haven't prepped for it either with make sure
- 18:53you've ordered additional food or make sure you have enough staff, it can be
- 18:56a disaster. You know, the first year we did this when Shawnee was
- 19:00when Shawnee had just opened in twenty and eighteen, restaurants were running out of
- 19:04food. And so after that we learned a lesson that we need to start
- 19:08working with our local businesses to make sure that they know exactly what's going on.
- 19:12So we're doing that. We put out we have an email list that
- 19:15goes out to them and so they know exactly what to order and you know,
- 19:18how much to order and how many staff to bring in. And staffing
- 19:22has been an issue all over you know, all over the country, not
- 19:23just unique to Charleston, but we have we have, you know, some
- 19:27staffing issues that they have to work on between now and then because it's just
- 19:32going to be slammed for three consecutive weeks. And talk about the hotels,
- 19:34where do we put all these people when they come in, Well, we
- 19:37don't have enough hotels unfortunately in the you know, between Charleston and Huntington,
- 19:41we don't have enough. So people for this one with they'll stay two two
- 19:45and a half hours away. Yeah, you know, we will fill up
- 19:48every hotel in Canau County, every hotel in Cabell County. People will stay
- 19:52down in Logan. People will you know, at the UH at the resort
- 19:55down there lodge and people will stay all the way up, you know,
- 19:57towards flight. I ran, I've told this story when you've been on the
- 20:00when you are on with me. Once before, I was having a dinner
- 20:03a year or so ago in Gallipolice, Ohio. I was at a Buffalo
- 20:07wild Wings and Gallipolice, Ohio, and struck up a conversation with these people
- 20:11and they were in for an event at Shawnee and that was the nearest hotel
- 20:15that they had was in Gallipolice. Yeah, yeah, it's you know.
- 20:18So I think that we've we've got some things going on. I think additional
- 20:21hotels are coming in one in particular, it's going to be downtown. I
- 20:23think maybe two. But the key is that that West Virginia Soccer Association,
- 20:29you know, Lynn Rodgers and Dave Lraba have done such a wonderful job dating
- 20:33back to like two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine time frame and
- 20:37letting people know, letting USU Soccer know that we can do these tournaments.
- 20:41I mean, it takes hundreds and hundreds of volunteers and a lot of other
- 20:45states can't pull that off. I mean in Virginia, you know, they've
- 20:48struggled, Pennsylvania struggled. But when we're talking about the number of states that
- 20:52try to get these tourns because they want that economic impact too. But they
- 20:55keep coming back. They keep coming back to Shawnee, they keep coming back
- 20:57to Barba. What is it? Why do they keep coming? They really
- 21:00like the way that we put on a tournament. I mean we make sure
- 21:03that every detail is covered, every single detail. Uh, you know when
- 21:07USU Soccer, because we use more than just the turf. You know,
- 21:11we've got six turf fields. Barbersville has three turf but we also have to
- 21:15play in the grass. They got to measure our grass. I mean they
- 21:17will take a ruler out onto the field and measure to make sure that our
- 21:19grass is cut to the appropriate length. And we always we get it right.
- 21:23You know, we've run that facility very well. We've got to make
- 21:26sure that everything, everything detail is covered and so they know that we can
- 21:30do this, and they were doing it before I got here. You know,
- 21:33the USU Soccer was bringing those tournaments to Barbersville. They were smaller,
- 21:37but they were bringing them here and so they did such a good job,
- 21:40they always want to come back. And even though you know, we're competing
- 21:42with New York, we're competing with Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New
- 21:48Jersey. Everybody's trying to get these tournaments. We keep winning them. We've
- 21:51won five out of the last six. Right, And what do people when
- 21:55they come in and what are some of the comets maybe that you've heard from
- 21:57people about, not necessarily the feel olds commissioner or the grounds, but what
- 22:02do they talk? What do they say about the people of us? They
- 22:04love the people. They love going to the restaurants. The servers are nice,
- 22:07the owners of the restaurants are nice. You know, they go downtown
- 22:11to Ellen's, they get an ice cream. They love being able to go
- 22:14to Live on the Levee on Friday night. So they love the people everybody,
- 22:18you know. That's it's what Virginia is. A hospitality state. I
- 22:22mean, we're so if you're pulled over on the side of the road with
- 22:23a flat tire, you won't be there more than five minutes before somebody stops.
- 22:26Yeah, and they enjoy that. They like being catered to, They
- 22:30like the friendliness of the folks in town, and you know that's one thing
- 22:34that we have that maybe other states. Yeah, you're exactly right about that.
- 22:37Five AY Live is brought to two part about Hustin's Pizza. This mouth
- 22:40gets yourself a large eighteenage Pepperoni pizza and Stromboli for only twenty two ninety nine.
- 22:44Visit Hussins Pizza dot com for details. Mister Ben Slanga, what can
- 22:48you tell us about the indoor sports complex? How are we how are we
- 22:51doing all of that? It's moving along. So we have obviously we have
- 22:53named the board that's overseeing the complex. They are interviewing architects and they're interviewing
- 23:00a basically a liaison that will go that will serve between the board and the
- 23:04construction team. It's called an owner's rep. And so they're interviewing people for
- 23:10that position as well. And so I think those interviews are scheduled this month.
- 23:14I think in October you'll see some significant movement. Had a texture to
- 23:18the show about Coonskin. Texture said, please ask the commissioner how much counting
- 23:22state moneys were involved in the new Coonskin golf course. You know what,
- 23:26I have to pull it to see exactly how much counting money. I actually
- 23:30went to the golf course for the first time. I wasn't there on opening
- 23:33day. I went out there with Jeff Hutchinson and General Island Hackett the other
- 23:36day and was to say I was blown away would be an understatement. I
- 23:41mean, so they took that as a par three nine hole course where they
- 23:45basically modeled it after famous holes in in England, in Ireland. It's incredible.
- 23:51I mean it is those guys on the air talking about and I got
- 23:52an education for sure that day. So I went out for the first time
- 23:56it was probably two weeks ago, and could not believe what an amazing job
- 24:02they did. So yeah, I think the I think overall is around a
- 24:06million men and a half and how much exactly was county versus state Parks also
- 24:11has a separate budget too, so yeah, I can pull those numbers,
- 24:14but I don't have them on me today. Where are we on the flood
- 24:17recovery? We've what a month or so out now or nearly that. Where
- 24:22are we on that clean I had Commissier Carper on the show I think it
- 24:23was last week talking about it and where are we now on foot clean up?
- 24:27So I mean we've picked up tons and tons of debris. I think
- 24:30our debris cleanup has finished, and now we're just doing that, you know,
- 24:34trying to get some feme of money and state assistance, you know,
- 24:38some money and try to rebuild as you know best we can. But it's
- 24:44a shame. I mean, hell, as soon as we finish up with
- 24:45one, we get another one. Right. It's just been and so much
- 24:48and so much of this, sir, is not and you know this a
- 24:52lot better than I do. So much of it is not just your traditional
- 24:55flooding. I mean, you know, you get that much rain, you
- 24:57know, in that short of amount of time, but a lot of it
- 25:00is not what you would constitute is flooding as much as it is. You
- 25:03know, rock slides are a problem, and roads caving in and thing that
- 25:07all goes back to infrastructure. It is an infrastructure issue. But we have
- 25:11a lot of the flooding. You know, some of the creeks get get
- 25:14clogged up. Yeah, you get backed up. You get some some of
- 25:18those private bridges that are are used across creeks, those things get backed up.
- 25:22And we have a lot of those ways for a lot of those a
- 25:25lot of them get wiped out and people you're gonna go ten miles down the
- 25:27road, you know, yeah, And I mean it's a it's a big
- 25:30it's a big problem. But we've we're working with VOAD to try to get
- 25:33them, you know, to help with some of the private bridges. We
- 25:36just gave them some money. So you know, we've got a lot going
- 25:40on up there. The infrastructure problem is the biggest problem up there. Just
- 25:44the you know, everything is just antiquated and it's unfortunate. But we're trying
- 25:48to keep those creeks clean the best we can, you know, so that
- 25:52when we do have another rain event, you know, it won't flood as
- 25:56badly as it did in the past. But it's it's a big task,
- 26:00really is well. And again, you know they talk about things like five
- 26:03hundred year floods, a thousand year floods. You had them two years in
- 26:06a row. You had a thousand year flood basically, right, And those
- 26:08people really, you know, they've borne the brunt up. It's been.
- 26:11It's been terrible for them. It really has come. I kend of Commissier
- 26:15Ben Slango is here. Five eighty Live is brought to you a part by
- 26:17your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Season is over, but
- 26:21there's still exciting things going on over Gomar Ballpark, including the Down and Dirty
- 26:25Music Festival to ballpark October the fourteenth and fifteenth. Particulars. In from more
- 26:29information, visit Down and Dirty Music Festival dot com. I'm gonna get down
- 26:33and dirty here with you just for a moment, all right before we let
- 26:36you go. And that is there's been all kinds of political announcements. I
- 26:38would be remiss if I didn't ask you what's the future look like for a
- 26:42Ben Selango. Your friend Steve Williams just announced that over the Labor Day holiday,
- 26:47as was expected, he's going to be running for governor. So far,
- 26:49as far as I know, the only Democrat that is announced to run.
- 26:53What are you? What are you looking at next year? Sir?
- 26:56You know what I'm always watching. I mean, I'm I'm on the count
- 26:57of commission to til twenty and twenty eight. This year wasn't the right This
- 27:02was not the right time for me to run for governor. I mean for
- 27:03just a host of reasons that I've been on the show and talked before.
- 27:07But I'm going to sit back and watch this one. You know, we'll
- 27:10see what happens. You know, Steve Williams is a great guy. He's
- 27:12he's a very hard worker. The Republican side has some very good candidates as
- 27:17well. You know, we'll see how this one shakes out. But I
- 27:21think that Republican primary is going to be a gonna be a nice fight to
- 27:23watch. Well, I think it is. I think it is, and
- 27:26and so far it's been, you know, pretty civil, but it probably
- 27:30won't say that way, not because the Republicans, but if it were Democrats
- 27:33probably would be the same thing. And they're you know, taken a couple
- 27:37of shots. I'll tell you one race that I think is going to be
- 27:40really interesting and already has started to be, and that's that attorney general race.
- 27:44That is going to be an interesting race. And you know, jab
- 27:47mccuski has won several statewide elections. Mike Stewart is feisty and did an excellent
- 27:52job as US attorney. So we'll see, we'll see how that s And
- 27:56then Ryan will You've got him up in the you know, northern Panhandle,
- 27:57so we'll see how that one shakes out. But yeah, there's some very
- 28:00interesting Secretary of State races state. Yep, on the on the GOP side.
- 28:04So I'm gonna step back and eat some popcorn and watch those watch the
- 28:07whole thing happened. Uh texts here before we let you guess is can you
- 28:11imagine if Slango were governor of the state, how we would be booming right
- 28:15now? He gets business here. Well, I appreciate that. I you
- 28:18know, I signed Ben's mom But but anyway, No, I think the
- 28:22governor's doing a great job. I do. I think he has. They've
- 28:25brought in some new business. I think our legislature has done a very good
- 28:27job on several key things. So I appreciate that comment. But you know,
- 28:33honestly, there's probably not a lot of things that I would have done
- 28:37differently differently during COVID or we're after, than what the governor's done. To
- 28:41be completely candid, I mean, I think he's I think he's doing a
- 28:44good job. No, you can't speak for your wife. But somebody ask
- 28:47ask why your wife switched parties? You can you can answer much about your
- 28:52wife is probably I can answer about mine. Right, I get in trouble
- 28:55when I go home. But you know, I think that you know,
- 28:57there were a lot of reasons, a lot of things that factored into that.
- 29:00But you know, she's running again for circuit judge. People had speculated
- 29:03she was running for the Weshington Spring Court appeal. She's not. She's running
- 29:06for circuit judge. She's filed. She's you know, running to keep her
- 29:08seat. So we'll see. All right, You're always welcome on the show,
- 29:12sir. Appreciate you coming on giving us good news from and we got
- 29:17a lot of it here in West right now we do things are going well
- 29:18all right. County Commissioner Ben Silango, I appreciate twenty four minutes away from

- 32:40good morning, how are you? Thank Good morning, Dave. I'm great.
- 32:44How are you today? Thank you for being here. The good news
- 32:47keeps rolling out of Puttnham County. Now, I was had an opportunity last
- 32:52Thursday night to attend the annual Putnham County Development at forty dinner and you dropped
- 32:55some big news on the folks and attendance of Valley Park talk about him.
- 33:00Yeah, absolutely, So we wanted to celebrate everything that has happened with the
- 33:05Putnam County Development Authority and in Putnam County this last year. We were so
- 33:09thankful everyone that came out. You know, that was a fundraiser for our
- 33:14organization, and you know, we wanted to show everyone that was participating,
- 33:17what is happening, what is you know, what's moving forward? How are
- 33:22we driving development in Putnham County. So we had two major announcements at our
- 33:27denner last Thursday evening Putnam County Development Authority. If you don't know, David,
- 33:32we're actually a sixty plus year old organization and historically we have started many
- 33:38industrial parks and one of the ones we currently owned. It's the Putnam Business
- 33:43Park located on Route thirty five and Prager's Bottom. And we announced two different
- 33:49companies that are both Putnam County companies that are growing. They're expanding in our
- 33:54park. One is Diesel Drilling Corporation, who's currently not in the park.
- 34:00They are building a six thousand square foot garage and shop facility there in our
- 34:07park and they're doubling their staff. And then we also announced that Multi Code
- 34:13Corporation, who is already in the park, is expanding. They actually have
- 34:17two expansions, two phases DAVE where they are immediately going to build a sixty
- 34:24thousand square foot facility and add about twenty jobs, and in the second phase
- 34:30will actually replicate that. So very exciting stuff. We are seeing growth in
- 34:35Putnam County and I was just so thankful to those companies to let us celebrate
- 34:38that at our general last week. And again we're talking with more contending from
- 34:42the Putnam County Development Authority. And we always welcome job announcements and we love
- 34:45when companies expand, but there's something special about having a West Virginia company announce
- 34:52an expansion project like this. Morgan add to have it in Putnam County,
- 34:57that's makes it even more exciting. Absolutely, so they've you know, we
- 35:02we do try to attract new businesses into Putnham County, but research shows that
- 35:08well over eighty percent of job creation is actually from your companies that are already
- 35:14here. And my team we really try to work with staying in touch with
- 35:19businesses in the area and retain them and help them grow because we know that
- 35:23that's where growth front it comes from. And you know, you can bring
- 35:27in new businesses, but if you're not retaining the ones you have, then
- 35:30it's kind of for nothing. So we're so thrilled that we have two companies
- 35:35that have chosen to stay here and grow here. And I think that that
- 35:38is a big test of money to how great it is to do business in
- 35:44only Putnam County, but it's West Virginia as a whole. Well, and
- 35:46I know a little bit about the multi coat multi coate folks they do.
- 35:51This is a I mean, even though this company is based in Puttnham County,
- 35:54Morgan, this is a company that has operations and they do business literally
- 36:00around the world from little old Putnam County. Talk about them, Yeah,
- 36:04it's awesome. So that was actually the theme of our annual dinner last week,
- 36:07is that Putnam County is globally competitive, and you know, we wanted
- 36:10to show that there are international companies in Putnam County. Obviously, most people
- 36:15know about Toyota, but what I wanted to highlight at that dinner is how
- 36:19many of our companies and even small companies have products and services in countries all
- 36:25around the world, and Multi Code is one of those. They export a
- 36:29lot of their products overseas, so they do sealings and coatings for pools,
- 36:36patios and decks, things like that. If you can imagine how big their
- 36:39market is down in the Caribbean as well as places that are a little bit
- 36:45warmer than West Virginia, Dave. But they export and they have been very
- 36:51successful. I believe they're in sixteen countries now. But we have a lot
- 36:54of companies in Putnham County that do that, and I think that that's wonderful.
- 36:59And we're selling grating, Yeah, I would agree. What don't we
- 37:01see in the future for Putnham County. Of course, we're seeing all these
- 37:06job announcements that are coming, you know, all over the state of West
- 37:08Virginia and this outfit and that out that anything in particular that you can let
- 37:13us in on about what we may expect from the future in Putnam County.
- 37:15Yeah, absolutely. So we are focused on multi facets of how can we
- 37:22develop Putnam County. Obviously, we want to continue developing our business community and
- 37:28growing jobs, but we're also focusing on workforce development, and we're focusing on
- 37:34housing development, so how can we get more people to live in Putnam County,
- 37:38but also how can we retain our talent, our young talent to stay
- 37:44here in West Virginia and in the region. So we're doing a lot of
- 37:47work on housing. We know that we have a great school system in Putnam
- 37:52County and people want to live in Putnam County. So we've just announced last
- 37:59week as well that we have a housing tax credit that the state passed.
- 38:05Puttnam County is now the only county in this region that has that tax credit
- 38:08for housing developers. So you're going to see more houses, Dave, we
- 38:13need it, and with that, you know will come more retail. And
- 38:17then we're also working on how do we keep our students here. So we
- 38:22have also started an apprenticeship program with tweet a, New Core and several other
- 38:28companies at Bridge Valley. So we're not only focused on business retention and expansion,
- 38:34but also our people. You know, we love our community. How
- 38:37can we get more people to live here, and then how can we keep
- 38:40them here as well? And as far as New Core goes. I mean,
- 38:45these folks, you know, aren't even up in I mean they're doing
- 38:49things. If you've been through Apple Grove here lately, of our in Mason
- 38:52County, they're doing things. They're already but they're already making a huge investment
- 38:58in the state of West Virginia. I mean they show up on day one
- 39:00and give what was it, a million dollars to the Mason County Board of
- 39:02Education. Hello, welcome to town. You know, here's a million dollars.
- 39:07But they're also doing things in Putnham County because they realize that once we
- 39:10have these jobs in here and again they're already coming in for the construction of
- 39:15whatever, that a lot of these people, a lot of a lot,
- 39:19are going to choose to live in there. Not everybody's going to live in
- 39:22Mason County. There's gonna be some in Cable County, Kanalla County, because
- 39:24if you're paying enough money, people are morgan are gonna be willing to drive.
- 39:29But there's gonna be a heck of a lot of them that are going
- 39:30to live in Putnham County. And i live in the heart of Tays Valley
- 39:34and I'm already seeing them. I'm already seen them coming in coming in.
- 39:37Absolutely, you know there's there's going to be so many people coming in,
- 39:43and then you know they're also going to be hiring folks that live here as
- 39:45well. But I've had the pleasure of actually entertaining a lot of the managers
- 39:50that they were recruiting from other states and plants, And you know, what
- 39:55a privilege to have someone come and you be the first West Virginian that they
- 40:00meet and meet their kids. I mean, it's just incredible. And then
- 40:06a few months later to see them at your church, see them in the
- 40:08grocery store, like that makes my heart happy. That is why I love
- 40:14what I do. It's been incredible to welcome new Core into our community.
- 40:19They have been a huge partner to pc DA, both financially and in other
- 40:24just partnerships. We did buy a building earlier this year. It's a manufacturing
- 40:30building and New Core as our first tenant, which is also allowing us another
- 40:34source of income. So they are making a huge impact both as a business
- 40:38and just as a community. They have been so great to work with.
- 40:45They've been so sweet and frankly, some of them I can already call my
- 40:50friends just from welcoming them into our community. And I'm sure if you have
- 40:54kids in school in Punnham County, they more than likely have a kid in
- 40:59their school. Cool that just moved here from from another New Core plant.
- 41:04Yeah, exactly right, Morgan, Before we let you go, when when
- 41:07you are trying to sell Putnham County to people, and I'm talking about you
- 41:12know, whether it's a New Core or whether it's you know whoever that you're
- 41:15trying to get to come into Putnam County, what do you have in the
- 41:19toolbox that you can give them to say, Hey, here's why you should
- 41:23locate here in in this area. Here's what we have to offer. What
- 41:28is it that Putnam County, in your opinion, has to offer that maybe
- 41:30other areas of the state don't have. Absolutely, so our kind of commissioners
- 41:36would agree with me on this one. We say we have three things,
- 41:39and I know You're Putnam County in two days, so I'm sure you'll agree.
- 41:44We are a safe community, we have a great school system, and
- 41:49we are in a wonderful location. We are very blessed to have I sixty
- 41:52four driving right through Putnham County. We I know plenty of people that once
- 41:57spouse works in Huntington and one spouse works in Austin. It's just a great
- 42:01community. We have wonderful parks and just the people. But I think you
- 42:07know a lot of West Virginia is about the people. But those three things
- 42:12specifically make Putnam County different than some of the surrounding areas. We'regan Tenny,
- 42:17doing great work there with the Putnam County Development Authority, great announcement, great
- 42:22economic news for the area. I appreciate you being there. We'll talk again
- 42:23soon. Thanks a lot. Thanks Dave, have a great day as well.

- 46:12Now. It's being presented by the John L. Dickinson Family and Embassy
- 46:14Suites on Saturday, November the eleventh, starting at seven o'clock. The idea
- 46:20of this group, First T West Virginia is to give young people from all
- 46:23backgrounds an opportunity to gain life lessons through the game of golf. It's kind
- 46:29of a neat thing. I was doing some reading about early webs some people
- 46:31on to talk about that. But the event itself is a black tie affair.

- 46:45org. Just a couple of things making news. The City of Charleston is
- 46:52going to be kicking off a series of community meetings that are designed to get
- 46:57input from the public on a variety of issues and complaints and concerns. And
- 47:05this is something that the administration of Mayor Goodwin actually implemented when her administration first
- 47:12took office. So it's your chance to in a public setting, and they're
- 47:16going to be several of them. We're run down the schedule for you to
- 47:20go out and to vent or to give ideas or whatever. Now, you
- 47:25know, sometimes these things turn into complaint sessions and that's okay, that's that's
- 47:30that's actually what they want. But you can give praise as well or ideas
- 47:34things that you think should be done within the city. Now, the first
- 47:37one is going to be happening tomorrow night at the Kanawa City Community Center,
- 47:40and then on Thursday, September twenty eight at mary See Snow Elementary, Wednesday
- 47:49October eleventh at Elizabeth Memorial United Methodist Church that's on Oakland Road, and then
- 47:55Tuesday, October twenty fourth at the Kanawa County Public Library downtown and the final
- 48:01one is going to be on Wednesday, November first, at the Roosevelt Neighborhood
- 48:06Center. Now, if you didn't catch all those again, the first one
- 48:09is tomorrow night, kanas City Community said. All these will start about six
- 48:13o'clock. By the way, first one is tomorrow night at the Kanasa City
- 48:15Community Center, Thursday the twenty eighth at mary See Snow, Wednesday the eleventh
- 48:20of October at elizab Memorial Night at Methodist Church, Tuesday October twenty fourth at
- 48:24the Kanaan County Public Library, and the final one Wednesday, November the first,
- 48:28at the Roosevelt Neighborhood Center. If you need more information, you can
- 48:30call three oh four three four eight eight one seven four And that's three oh
- 48:36four three four eight eight one seven four. Now. I have a complete
- 48:38list of all the meetings posted on my Facebook page it's Dave Allen Radio and
- 48:45also at Dave a seventy on x the artist formerly known as Twitter. There's
- 48:49also a story posted about it at WCHS network dot com. But again I've
- 48:52got the entire schedule. If you want to drop those down, just go
- 48:54over to my Facebook page Dave Allen Radio and Facebook or at Dave A seventy
- 48:59on Twitter. There's also a story posted about it at WCHS network dot com.
- 49:02So it's an opportunity for you to get out and you got some issues,
- 49:07concerns or questions, comments, whatever going on with the city and you
- 49:09maybe you can't make it to a city council. I mean, this is
- 49:12a lot smaller setting too for you to be able to go out, And
- 49:15of course we'll be covering those o our award winning news team will be covering
- 49:20those as well. The whole state still basking in the glory of the Mountaineer
- 49:24win over Pitt Saturday United Morgantown. Uh, the final of the game was
- 49:31a WVU seventy pit six and it really it really wasn't even that close.
- 49:37If you were in Morgantown or you watched the game on television, it really
- 49:40wasn't even that that close. Uh. Pitt is, with all due respect
- 49:45to the guys from from the Steel City, Pitt is a really really,
- 49:51really bad team. I mean they're they're they're bad, and I'm not trying
- 49:53to take away from anything WVU did, but they're a bad team. That
- 49:58may be the worst performance by cour back up everything I felt sorry for the
- 50:00guy. I mean, I really did. The pit quarterback Neil Brown needed
- 50:06this win badly and he got it. Now is it enough to save his
- 50:08job? It helped for now, but he still got a bunch of games
- 50:13to go, including getting into the meet and the heart of conference play this
- 50:17weekend. Great wind though always great to beat the Pitt Panthers. Now my
- 50:22thundering Herd of Marshall off this week. They have a little team from Virginia
- 50:28known as Virginia Tech coming into the jone this weekend, sold out Jonesy Edwards
- 50:34Stadium, Go Hurd and I want to mention this a great event in Charleston
- 50:40this pass it actually ran the Thursday through Sunday. And talking about rib Fest
- 50:45and my man Rob Reel from her sister station Superstar Country ninety six one kwus
- 50:51in his words, I had him on the show Friday and his words,
- 50:53the only person who can go to rib Fest and lose weight because he got
- 50:59his head shaped. And Rob had this and he explained the story as to
- 51:02why he grew his hair long had to do it when his mother got sick
- 51:06and his mother sadly passed away, and he said he wasn't going to cut
- 51:09it, but he did cut it. Now I've got the video posted on
- 51:14my Facebook page Dave Allen Radio and the reason he did it. He had
- 51:19set a goal for the radiothon that we did a couple of weeks ago with
- 51:22WV Medicine Children's and because of our listeners, not only on his station,
- 51:27but all of the stations here in the building, we were able to achieve
- 51:30the goal. And he's a man of his word. So Rob got his
- 51:34head shaved completely, I mean even the beard. Better him than me.
- 51:38The videos posted again on my Facebook page. Ribfest was a huge success to
- 51:43it, so everybody that came out, all our stations where thank you so
- 51:45much. Our guys did not do so well in the wing eating competition that
- 51:49we had. We had Rob Reel out there and we also had Woody Woods.
- 51:52Neither one of them were able to win. The defending champion, Brian
- 51:57Ockley down thirty three wings. I'm not really sure what the timeframe was,
- 52:00but he down thirty three wings. That's pretty much all you need to know,
- 52:02all right. Coming up on tomorrow show, Rusty Webb is gonna be
- 52:05here to talk about thunder in the Mountains. Add Our old friend, former
- 52:08State Senator Rich Lindsay is on the show tomorrow and he says he's got a
- 52:14big announcement to make m roll tape on that one. We'll see what Rich
