- 0:06Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth Bizarre and Lazar, Hello, everybody nailed it.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Joined us always by our bar gap.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bark.
- 0:23Speaker 1: One of my favorite parts about Boston sports and Boston
- 0:26Speaker 1: sports culture and doing this job and being a fan
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the Boston sports teams is that we are championship
- 0:32Speaker 1: driven people. We are championship driven. Like we do not
- 0:36Speaker 1: celebrate wild card wins with parades or banners or anything
- 0:40Speaker 1: like that. All right, we don't do that here. We
- 0:43Speaker 1: are super Bowl or bust. We are title or bust.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We shouldn't lose that. Like, That's a great part about
- 0:49Speaker 1: this city and uh, these sports fans. Well, Bart, I
- 0:58Speaker 1: gave the house money take last week. I gave the
- 1:01Speaker 1: house money takes changed. I stand by it in the
- 1:05Speaker 1: moment of course, Oh yeah, I stand by in the
- 1:09Speaker 1: moment of the context of what we knew at this
- 1:11Speaker 1: time last week on Saturday, and I'm sitting on my
- 1:15Speaker 1: couch my lovely wife, and we're watching h probably the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Bruins game at this point, because you know her, you
- 1:23Speaker 1: got to put the Bruins game on. But I'm sitting
- 1:24Speaker 1: there waiting for, you know, the second game to start,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and I looked down at my phone and I got
- 1:32Speaker 1: a push notification that says stunner Colon bo Nick's fractures
- 1:39Speaker 1: ankle out for the rest of the season, and I just,
- 1:44Speaker 1: all of a sudden, my energy completely shifted from I
- 1:48Speaker 1: don't really care what happens on Sunday, house money, gravy
- 1:52Speaker 1: if they keep winning, to holy crap, they got to
- 1:55Speaker 1: win this game. Like now, there's a little bit of
- 1:57Speaker 1: pressure that went on the Patriots, and I give them
- 2:00Speaker 1: a lot of credit for going out there and winning
- 2:03Speaker 1: the game. It happened so suddenly before the game on
- 2:07Speaker 1: Sunday that I imagine that maybe the players didn't necessarily
- 2:10Speaker 1: feel the same way that we all did because there
- 2:12Speaker 1: wasn't a whole lot of time to think about it. Really,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you know, it happened Saturday night, they played Sunday, whatever
- 2:17Speaker 1: the case may be.
- 2:18Speaker 2: But they absolutely.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Have changed the stakes now, you know, this has changed everything,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and the fact that they you know, we're playing with
- 2:30Speaker 1: house money before I frankly, I don't feel that way
- 2:33Speaker 1: so much anymore. I think that this is a team
- 2:37Speaker 1: and a season and in a game on Sunday where
- 2:42Speaker 1: you have had a lot of things go your way,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and these are the times where you have to take
- 2:47Speaker 1: advantage of these golden opportunities. And they did on Sunday,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and we're gonna recap that one. We're going to do
- 2:55Speaker 1: the good, the bad, the stuff that gets you beat
- 2:57Speaker 1: and we're going to give them their flowers for beating
- 2:59Speaker 1: the Houston Texans. But now you definitely have to go
- 3:04Speaker 1: out there and win this game on Sunday in Denver.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That's exactly how I feel about it. No more house money,
- 3:08Speaker 1: no more gravy, go out and do it.
- 3:12Speaker 3: They're in the final four.
- 3:13Speaker 2: They are in the final four.
- 3:14Speaker 4: They're in the final four. And when you get to
- 3:16Speaker 4: this point, I mean, it's not fluky to get to
- 3:20Speaker 4: this point. It just isn't And they can obviously go further.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And it's just a testament to the job that that
- 3:29Speaker 4: Mike Rabel and the staff have done and the culture
- 3:31Speaker 4: they've built right away, and the way they've maximized the
- 3:35Speaker 4: roster they inherited, the way they changed it all that,
- 3:37Speaker 4: it's just it's stunning. It really, Like even the most
- 3:41Speaker 4: optimistic of us, I think if you said, yeah, they're
- 3:42Speaker 4: going to be a win over Jared's did them away
- 3:45Speaker 4: from the Super Bowl back in September, would have called
- 3:48Speaker 4: that better than a best case scenario.
- 3:50Speaker 3: But here we are.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's unbelievable. It's truly unbelievable. I have not you know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: we're gonna show our age air a little bit.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Two thousand and one. I was nine. Yeah, okay, so
- 4:01Speaker 2: I was there. I experienced it.
- 4:03Speaker 3: But you were nine.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I was nine.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Are you a year older than me?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Two? I was nine. I was in the third grade. Okay.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I don't know why you do this.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I tell you how old I was, and then you
- 4:14Speaker 1: go and you question it like I thought I was six. Well,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you can worry about your your math on your own time.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Seven.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's not the same thing. When you're nine year old
- 4:27Speaker 1: kid in the third grade. You don't really understand what's
- 4:30Speaker 1: going on. You don't understand the levity, you know, the
- 4:34Speaker 1: gravity of it at that point in time. Now that
- 4:37Speaker 1: you do, I think it's it's the most remarkable turnaround
- 4:42Speaker 1: I've ever seen in Boston sports. You know, absolutely, to
- 4:46Speaker 1: go from back to back four win seasons. How low
- 4:50Speaker 1: they were at the end of both those seasons too,
- 4:53Speaker 1: Not just the fact that they only won four games,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but it really just seemed extremely bleak.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Ending the Bill Belichick era.
- 5:02Speaker 1: His immediate replacement did not work out, firing him the
- 5:05Speaker 1: day of the.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Last game of the year within an hour hour and
- 5:09Speaker 3: a half.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Right, it was. It was a bad time.
- 5:12Speaker 4: You know, it's kind of crazy, full circlement. I didn't
- 5:14Speaker 4: realize this until I started digging into the Broncos. Bill
- 5:17Speaker 4: Belichick's last win as the head coach of the Patriots
- 5:19Speaker 4: was that Broncos was against the Broncos, Right.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yep U Chad Ryland, ye Chad huh. Chris Christian Barmore
- 5:28Speaker 1: had a huge game in that game. Bailey Zappy, Russell Wilson.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Duking it out.
- 5:33Speaker 3: They both played well in that game.
- 5:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, So we can reminisce them more as the next
- 5:38Speaker 1: two hours go. But let's talk about this game on
- 5:40Speaker 1: Sunday against the Texans, and I just continue to just be.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Extremely impressed.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Uh, talk about unbelievable turnarounds. I don't know if this
- 5:52Speaker 1: is quite as unbelievable as going from four winsday AFC
- 5:55Speaker 1: Championship game, but the way the defense has completely flipped
- 5:59Speaker 1: the switch, which from the regular season to the postseason
- 6:04Speaker 1: I knew that getting their guys back was going to help,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you know, Millan Williams, certainly, Robert Splaine, Tyris Tonga. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: obviously they haven't gotten a ton out of Harold Landry,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but Harold Landry as well in that group. I figured
- 6:17Speaker 1: that we would go back to seeing the defense that
- 6:19Speaker 1: we saw with the healthy Milton Williams for the first
- 6:22Speaker 1: nine to ten weeks of the season, which was good.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You know, I think some of the advanced metrics would
- 6:29Speaker 1: say it was below average or subpar, but the regular
- 6:33Speaker 1: metrics were always good all year long, you know, scoring,
- 6:36Speaker 1: defense and yards and even EPA which is not opponent
- 6:40Speaker 1: adjusted all the time like that. That's all those types
- 6:43Speaker 1: of things would say they were a pretty good defense.
- 6:45Speaker 1: But we knew about the straight to schedule, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We had no idea that I really sided, and I
- 6:51Speaker 1: want to talk for you. I had no idea that
- 6:54Speaker 1: they were going to come out and give up one
- 6:56Speaker 1: touchdown on twenty four opponent possessions, and that one touchdow
- 7:00Speaker 1: On drive being a twenty seven yard touchdown drive off
- 7:03Speaker 1: of Patriots turnover.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I never would have guessed that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You know, they've held the Texans and the Chargers one
- 7:11Speaker 1: for six in the red zone through two games. They
- 7:13Speaker 1: were the thirtieth ranked red zone defense in the NFL.
- 7:16Speaker 1: During the regular season, they're giving up i think it
- 7:18Speaker 1: was almost seventy percent of their red zone drives or
- 7:21Speaker 1: ending in touchdowns. Now they're giving up sixteen percent of
- 7:24Speaker 1: their red zone drives adding in touchdowns. They're making their
- 7:29Speaker 1: you know, causing turnovers. They are absolutely dominating the line
- 7:33Speaker 1: of scrimmage through two games, and we'll get to that.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You know, some of that is his opponent driven as well.
- 7:39Speaker 1: They have Phase two of the worst, if not the
- 7:41Speaker 1: worst offensive lines in football. So but they have absolutely
- 7:45Speaker 1: taken advantage of that opportunity and they've dominated the trenches
- 7:49Speaker 1: and they have also you know, another thing we can
- 7:52Speaker 1: get to is how they've sort of flipped their play
- 7:55Speaker 1: calling strategy on its head and now they kind of
- 7:58Speaker 1: flipped it and now they're getting more aggressive on early
- 8:01Speaker 1: downs and relying on that to get them into third
- 8:04Speaker 1: and long. And then when they get into third and long,
- 8:06Speaker 1: that's when they're kind of winning. With some of the
- 8:08Speaker 1: zone structures that we saw that they were really calling
- 8:12Speaker 1: on first down most of the time in the regular season.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So whether it's getting.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Your guys all back, whether it's up in the play
- 8:21Speaker 1: in the postseason, all the things that the players deserve
- 8:23Speaker 1: credit for, or all the things that Mike Rabel and
- 8:26Speaker 1: Zach Corer deserve credit for, this defense is carrying them.
- 8:30Speaker 1: They are in the AC Championship game because of their defense,
- 8:34Speaker 1: which I did not expect to be saying.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Yeah. And I think it comes down really to two things.
- 8:39Speaker 4: One, you talked about how we had mentioned, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 4: we were getting a lot of questions about the defense.
- 8:43Speaker 3: What's wrong, what's wrong?
- 8:44Speaker 4: What's wrong when they did kind of limp in down
- 8:48Speaker 4: the stretch there, but they were down multiple key players
- 8:51Speaker 4: playing Milton Williams right, those guys Kiris Tonga. The question
- 8:56Speaker 4: was when those guys come back, you know, are they
- 8:59Speaker 4: coming back on hundred whatever? And like, just because you
- 9:02Speaker 4: were getting the back doesn't mean they were gonna be
- 9:04Speaker 4: the same players they were before they got hurt, And
- 9:06Speaker 4: usually they're not. Usually guys come back and there's some right,
- 9:09Speaker 4: there's been no rust. Usually guys come back and there's
- 9:12Speaker 4: russ there's been no rust. Those guys have stepped right in,
- 9:14Speaker 4: picked up where they left off. So that's allowed things
- 9:16Speaker 4: to jump and then the other side of it, and
- 9:18Speaker 4: people were wondering at the time, like, why are they
- 9:20Speaker 4: calling the defense this way? Why are they calling the
- 9:22Speaker 4: defense that way? I think Zach Korr was getting a
- 9:23Speaker 4: lot of heat. Zach Korr has called two excellent games
- 9:26Speaker 4: in the playoffs. Yes, to your point about the play calling,
- 9:28Speaker 4: he's been outstanding. I'm sure Mike Vrabel has played a
- 9:31Speaker 4: hand in that. I'm sure Tree Williams has played a
- 9:32Speaker 4: hand in that, and other coaches. But Zach Korr has
- 9:35Speaker 4: been on a heater here these last two games and
- 9:40Speaker 4: deserves a ton of credit for what this defense has done.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so let's start there. It was Zach Korran and
- 9:45Speaker 1: the play calling. Like I said, they they've really flipped
- 9:50Speaker 1: the script from their early down play calling sequencing in
- 9:54Speaker 1: the regular season to what it has been in the postseason.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So in the regular season, and I know it drove a.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Lot of people crazy, They're playing a lot of soft
- 10:01Speaker 1: zone coverage, a lot of four man rush on first down,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and they were giving up a lot of arts on
- 10:07Speaker 1: first down. And one of the things that I wrote
- 10:09Speaker 1: about an after further review is something that you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: the defensive community of coaches and things like that is
- 10:15Speaker 1: talking a lot more about now is how can we
- 10:18Speaker 1: win first down? Because what happens is, especially with all
- 10:21Speaker 1: the influence from the Shanahan Tree and all this kind
- 10:23Speaker 1: of stuff, these offenses are getting so good at building
- 10:29Speaker 1: the play action pass game off the run game. So
- 10:32Speaker 1: if you get into that loop of run, play action pass,
- 10:36Speaker 1: play action pass, run, it's extremely difficult to stop that.
- 10:40Speaker 1: The rhythm that it creates offensively, the easy throws it creates,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and the layups that it creates for quarterbacks in the
- 10:48Speaker 1: play action passing game, the explosive plays that it creates
- 10:51Speaker 1: in the play action passing game can be can be lethal,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and it can be really hard to break that sort
- 10:58Speaker 1: of trend. If it's first and ten becomes second and five,
- 11:02Speaker 1: second and five becomes a play action pass, and we're
- 11:05Speaker 1: back to first down, and we kind of never get
- 11:07Speaker 1: into third and pass where you can start to drop
- 11:11Speaker 1: your blitzes and your exotic coverages and there were you know,
- 11:14Speaker 1: all the heavy rotations and all that kind of stuff
- 11:17Speaker 1: you can.
- 11:17Speaker 2: If you can never get.
- 11:18Speaker 1: To that sort of thing, then it's really hard to
- 11:22Speaker 1: get off the field defensively. So everybody's focus has been
- 11:28Speaker 1: turned to how can we win first down? And in
- 11:32Speaker 1: the regular season, the Patriots were twenty fifth in success
- 11:35Speaker 1: rate on first down. They're one of the worst first
- 11:37Speaker 1: down defenses in football. They have been third out of
- 11:41Speaker 1: the playoff teams, and first down they've improved by almost
- 11:45Speaker 1: ten percent with their success rate on first down defense.
- 11:49Speaker 1: They've basically been the best first down defense in football
- 11:52Speaker 1: in the playoffs. And that's including having Seattle's defense in
- 11:56Speaker 1: the playoffs, having Houston's defense in the playoffs, having the
- 11:59Speaker 1: Rams defense, the Broncos defense, so they they've done it
- 12:04Speaker 1: by winning first down.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So you know, you get aggressive on first down.
- 12:07Speaker 1: There's been a lot of five man pressure on first down,
- 12:10Speaker 1: a lot of man coverage on first down.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And now first down.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Becomes second and eight, second and nine, second and ten,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and that's when you can really start to get creative
- 12:21Speaker 1: because now you're getting these teams into drop back pass
- 12:24Speaker 1: where you know a pass is coming, and so you
- 12:26Speaker 1: can sort of feast on that predictability from the offense
- 12:31Speaker 1: so that once they get it at a first down
- 12:34Speaker 1: into second and long into third and long, now here
- 12:36Speaker 1: come the cover.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Zeros, Here come the blitzes.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Here comes all the different stuff that we've been seeing
- 12:41Speaker 1: from this Patriots defense. So I think we all sort
- 12:46Speaker 1: of thought that this could happen, that with Christian Gonzalez
- 12:50Speaker 1: and Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones, they might just go
- 12:53Speaker 1: from a twenty seven percent man coverage rate to a
- 12:56Speaker 1: forty percent man coverage rate in the playoffs and just
- 12:58Speaker 1: start playing a lot of man. And that has mostly
- 13:01Speaker 1: been what's happened, and so now you're seeing a lot
- 13:04Speaker 1: of that come to fruition. Now the question is is, like,
- 13:08Speaker 1: why didn't they play like this all year?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Right?
- 13:11Speaker 1: And I think my reasoning for that was you were
- 13:16Speaker 1: playing a lot of offenses that had bad quarterbacks.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Frankly, that had bad quarterbacks.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And when you're going up against the Dylan Gabriels and
- 13:26Speaker 1: the Spencer Rattlers and a young cam Ward and whoever
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Jets are trotting out there, Quinn viewers like, I
- 13:34Speaker 1: think the biggest thing defensively that you want to do
- 13:37Speaker 1: is just make those teams go on ten, twelve, thirteen
- 13:41Speaker 1: play drives, Like you want to make those teams march
- 13:44Speaker 1: and consistently execute. So they played a little bit more
- 13:47Speaker 1: of a ben don't break branded defense. Now they're getting
- 13:51Speaker 1: into the playoffs and they're getting into at least what
- 13:53Speaker 1: should be better competition hasn't necessarily been that way. They
- 13:57Speaker 1: they've turned it up a notch and they've been more aggressive.
- 14:02Speaker 1: They've played to their strengths more with man coverage and
- 14:05Speaker 1: it's working. So I fully expect and we're going to
- 14:08Speaker 1: get into the Broncos plenty here, especially in the second
- 14:11Speaker 1: hour of the show.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I fully expect that to continue.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I know Jared Stidham kind of probably fits for most
- 14:16Speaker 1: people in that first category, but this is the AMC
- 14:19Speaker 1: Championship thing, and.
- 14:20Speaker 4: It's working, and you stick with the hot hand and
- 14:23Speaker 4: you stick it with you stick with what's working, what's
- 14:25Speaker 4: gotten here.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Absolutely, So you know that that's really been the most
- 14:30Speaker 1: impressive part to me is you know the way that
- 14:35Speaker 1: they have completely changed up their play calling so far
- 14:38Speaker 1: in the playoffs, And you know, I'll just put this
- 14:41Speaker 1: caveat out there too and then we can move on.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It's a two game sample size, so I think that
- 14:49Speaker 1: they've changed their philosophy. The numbers back up that they've
- 14:52Speaker 1: changed their philosophy. But it is only two games. So
- 14:56Speaker 1: when I look at forty percent, blitz rate eleven sent
- 15:00Speaker 1: cover zero rate thirty five to forty percent, depending on
- 15:03Speaker 1: where you look man coverage rate. It's different than looking
- 15:06Speaker 1: at it in a seventeen to eighteen game sample, you
- 15:09Speaker 1: know where there's a lot of.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Different It is two games, it's two playoff games. We
- 15:12Speaker 3: know they can do it.
- 15:13Speaker 4: We know they can do it at a high level.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Like yep, no, there's a reason to stick with it.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no, there's no debt that they should be
- 15:18Speaker 1: sticking with it, and it's definitely worked. The other thing
- 15:22Speaker 1: that has just really worked and stood out from everybody
- 15:27Speaker 1: it's perspective, i'm sure, is how much the defensive line
- 15:30Speaker 1: has just dominated a line of scrimmage two weeks in
- 15:32Speaker 1: a row. And I mentioned that it's, you know, not
- 15:35Speaker 1: a good Texans offensive line. They were also missing Trent Brown,
- 15:37Speaker 1: They're starting right tackle, so they were on their backup
- 15:41Speaker 1: right tackle, backup guard. We can talk about that in
- 15:44Speaker 1: a second as well. Some things that Texans did in
- 15:47Speaker 1: this game really were perplexing. But across the board, they
- 15:52Speaker 1: got contributions again from their defensive line, led by Chase
- 15:57Speaker 1: On who's just been fantastic through two games. His fourteen
- 16:01Speaker 1: total pressures through two games seven. In this game, Milton
- 16:04Speaker 1: Williams had four, Dirden had four, bar Moore had three.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Tonga was getting guys for you with picks and stuff
- 16:11Speaker 1: like that, splitting double teams.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Uh.
- 16:13Speaker 1: They are getting contributions really up and down the defensive line.
- 16:18Speaker 1: They're even getting contracts, Like they put like Leonard Taylor
- 16:21Speaker 1: in there for a couple of snaps and he's getting pressure.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Like you know, they they've really ponder Anthony Jennings, like
- 16:27Speaker 1: all these guys are are contributing. All these guys are
- 16:31Speaker 1: completely just dominated up front, run and pass game. It's
- 16:36Speaker 1: been impressive to watch their defensive line. I mean it's
- 16:38Speaker 1: fun to watch like they're they're just flying off the
- 16:40Speaker 1: ball into blocks, into the line of scrimmage, flat out domination.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 4: It's and they'll have a tougher test this week, like
- 16:48Speaker 4: you said, against the Broncos. But this is this is
- 16:50Speaker 4: the group I think they envisioned when they when they
- 16:52Speaker 4: brought these guys in this offseason.
- 16:53Speaker 1: What do you make out of Chase on You know,
- 16:55Speaker 1: this this little breakout that he's having. We see this
- 16:58Speaker 1: happen a lot where you know of guys use the
- 17:01Speaker 1: playoffs to kind of help their stock and help their
- 17:04Speaker 1: free agency. And I'm not saying that he's only doing
- 17:06Speaker 1: it for that, but you know, this is a guy
- 17:09Speaker 1: that was a first round pick. You know, in my
- 17:14Speaker 1: mind kind of was drafted into a dicey situation with
- 17:17Speaker 1: the Jacksonville Jaguars certainly, and he was already a guy
- 17:22Speaker 1: at LSU that was kind of raw and wasn't exactly
- 17:28Speaker 1: you know, going off a large sample, like there was
- 17:29Speaker 1: one I don't mean to go back to the twenty
- 17:31Speaker 1: twenty draft, but there was one bowl game or SEC
- 17:35Speaker 1: championship game at LSU where he had like one of
- 17:38Speaker 1: these kinds of games that he had on Sunday, he
- 17:40Speaker 1: had an absolutely monster game and that basically made him
- 17:43Speaker 1: a first round pick. But we were they were always
- 17:46Speaker 1: kind of as a prospect. They were always hoping to
- 17:49Speaker 1: capture that game. Like there was a lot of streakiness
- 17:52Speaker 1: to his game at LSU.
- 17:54Speaker 2: So is this the guy that he is or is
- 17:57Speaker 2: he just kind of feasting in the moment.
- 18:00Speaker 1: You know, bad tackle play for both teams as well
- 18:03Speaker 1: backups things like that. You know, where where are you
- 18:05Speaker 1: out with Chase On in his future here? Because he's
- 18:08Speaker 1: going to make some money this off.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Time, So I think you're thinking of the playoff game
- 18:11Speaker 3: against Oklahoma maybe.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yeah, he's always been a streaky player. This is kind
- 18:15Speaker 4: of who he is, and some guys are like this,
- 18:17Speaker 4: and he's getting hot at the right time. And maybe
- 18:18Speaker 4: the fact that's the playoffs, that contract is on the
- 18:20Speaker 4: line is a part of it, but it's this is
- 18:24Speaker 4: what he's done. He kind of gets hot for three
- 18:26Speaker 4: or four games at a time. I wouldn't hate them
- 18:29Speaker 4: bringing them back, you know, Like you said, he's gonna
- 18:33Speaker 4: make a good deal of money. They don't have a
- 18:35Speaker 4: ton of internal free agents, so that helps. But you
- 18:37Speaker 4: also have the Drake may contract looming and the Christian
- 18:40Speaker 4: Zoalz contract, which, by the way, he I know we'd
- 18:42Speaker 4: kind of talked about will they pay him? Will they
- 18:44Speaker 4: pay him after these last couple of games. Is this
- 18:45Speaker 4: is how they're gonna play? Yeah, you gotta pay him.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He's been outstanding. It is a good year to need
- 18:51Speaker 4: an edge rusher. And this is a coaching staff that
- 18:54Speaker 4: has a history of developing players at that position. So
- 18:56Speaker 4: whether it be finding a young guy in free agency
- 18:58Speaker 4: maybe hasn't worked out wherever he is, whether it be
- 19:01Speaker 4: going to the draft basically, do you trust them to
- 19:03Speaker 4: find the next k Levon Chase On sort of thing.
- 19:06Speaker 4: So I would not be opposed in bringing him back,
- 19:08Speaker 4: but it'll be interesting to see how they approach it
- 19:10Speaker 4: with some of the other contracts they have.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Lumit.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I think, you know, I would prioritize bringing him back
- 19:17Speaker 1: because I think you're gonna then create a situation where
- 19:20Speaker 1: you're gonna need to start in.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Caliber, and that's part of it. They need even if
- 19:24Speaker 3: they bring him back, they need an edge guy, right.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So it's kind of like in it was A twenty
- 19:30Speaker 1: one when they traded Jack Mason and then led Joe
- 19:32Speaker 1: touny Way and they kind of create and Ted Carris
- 19:35Speaker 1: and they sort of created this problem for themselves on
- 19:38Speaker 1: the interior offensive line they didn't need to create.
- 19:40Speaker 4: The reality is the guys in their range, not at
- 19:42Speaker 4: the top of the draft, but where this edge class
- 19:44Speaker 4: is strong, where they'll be picking, are more of those
- 19:46Speaker 4: strong side guys anyway?
- 19:47Speaker 1: Yeah, so usually too, And you know, I'm sure that
- 19:51Speaker 1: there's guys that come out that overperform their draft stocks. Yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 1: if you're picking, let's just let's just humor me. You're
- 19:58Speaker 1: picking thirty second in the draft. You're usually picking a
- 20:02Speaker 1: player at the edge position that's good at one thing.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You know, he's either good at stopping the run, he's
- 20:06Speaker 1: good at rushing the pass, or but the guys that
- 20:08Speaker 1: are good at both are going in the.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Top ten times.
- 20:11Speaker 3: It's a good draft.
- 20:11Speaker 1: But yeah, you're right, Yeah, it's usually specialist, more specialists
- 20:15Speaker 1: at that point of the draft.
- 20:17Speaker 2: So the defensive line has been great.
- 20:19Speaker 1: The other position group that I thought was mostly great,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, not perfect, but mostly in the goods was
- 20:25Speaker 1: of you know, the big the big three at corner,
- 20:28Speaker 1: the three corners, Gonzalez, Davis Jones.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Gonzales was targeted fifteen.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Times in this game, which was a career high for
- 20:36Speaker 1: him and I think the highest any corner has been
- 20:38Speaker 1: targeted in a game this season in the NFL, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: he only gave up one play over twenty yards. On
- 20:45Speaker 1: fifteen targets, it was like eight catches for sixty five
- 20:49Speaker 1: fifty five yards or something like that.
- 20:51Speaker 2: It's like eight yards of catch. Despite the fact that
- 20:53Speaker 2: he was targeted as much as he was, it was weird.
- 20:56Speaker 4: It felt like the Texans game plan was throwing underneath
- 20:59Speaker 4: and forced Chris to tackle, which, okay, if he was
- 21:02Speaker 4: a rookie that I remember that was kind of the
- 21:04Speaker 4: knock on him as a rookie was he wasn't the
- 21:06Speaker 4: most willing or physical tackler. He's unlocked another level at
- 21:10Speaker 4: this year, not just a good tackler, but he and
- 21:12Speaker 4: he had another one in this game.
- 21:13Speaker 3: He hits, he'll he'll lay the lumber.
- 21:15Speaker 4: And so I didn't understand why that, Like did Houston
- 21:18Speaker 4: not have any tape on him from the last two years?
- 21:20Speaker 3: That was a little weird time.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I mean, you're not gonna beat him deep like, so
- 21:24Speaker 1: you know, he's basically impossible to complete a deep pass against.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So I just I don't know if you're going to
- 21:29Speaker 1: have to target him, which is sort of where the
- 21:31Speaker 1: coverage was taking Strat a lot of the time, because
- 21:35Speaker 1: that's where you know they were leaving him one on
- 21:36Speaker 1: one on the back side a lot.
- 21:38Speaker 2: So like, what else are you going to kind of do?
- 21:40Speaker 1: Like you're not going to beat him, especially not without
- 21:42Speaker 1: Nico Collins, Like you're not going to have like Jaden
- 21:44Speaker 1: Higgins or Xavier Hutchinson's not running by Christian Zalaz, although
- 21:47Speaker 1: Higgins almost did, So that was the one rep where
- 21:50Speaker 1: I thought he got kind of lucky that there was
- 21:53Speaker 1: no PI on that play. But he also kind of
- 21:55Speaker 1: got pushed off on the back shoulder, you know, slot
- 21:58Speaker 1: fade there, I thought as well. So I kind of
- 22:01Speaker 1: chocked those two things up to a wash because I
- 22:03Speaker 1: thought they might have kept a flag in the pocket
- 22:06Speaker 1: on that one deep target to Higgins because they didn't
- 22:09Speaker 1: call the first push off. That was his only big
- 22:12Speaker 1: play that he allowed. Marcus Jones obviously had to pick six.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I thought there was some stuff early that from a
- 22:19Speaker 1: zone standpoint that we'll get to in the bads that
- 22:21Speaker 1: Marcus Jones was in the middle of. But pick six
- 22:24Speaker 1: is a pick six, you know, Yeah, you have a
- 22:25Speaker 1: great return there. And then Carlton Davis two interceptions, another
- 22:29Speaker 1: pass breakup. I actually thought he could have had three.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I thought the pass breakup he could have caught two.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So yeah, he had two, you know three you know,
- 22:37Speaker 1: plays on the ball in this game, and he was
- 22:40Speaker 1: really good in this game as well. But when they
- 22:42Speaker 1: put this cornerback trio together in the off season, a
- 22:45Speaker 1: game like this, you know, interceptions, ball production, you know,
- 22:50Speaker 1: getting getting your hands on the football, shutting guys down
- 22:53Speaker 1: in man coverage like this was this was the vision,
- 22:56Speaker 1: This is what they wanted.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Is exactly what you were a building tours yep under Perc.
- 23:01Speaker 1: The other thing here that I wrote down just some
- 23:03Speaker 1: like I thought, unsung heroes on the defense from this
- 23:06Speaker 1: game that didn't necessarily register on the stat sheet like
- 23:09Speaker 1: the guys but we brought up first.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I still continue to just be.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Really impressed with the with Craig Woodson and the play
- 23:19Speaker 1: that he's bringing to the table. I don't think he
- 23:21Speaker 1: gets talked about enough that this is a rookie that
- 23:25Speaker 1: has played the most defensive snaps out of any Patriot
- 23:28Speaker 1: player on defense this season and is playing well.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I love how fast he plays.
- 23:35Speaker 1: He is a extremely his play speat is off the charts.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He plays extremely fast, extremely hard. Broke up a couple
- 23:45Speaker 1: of passes in this game. I had the interception on
- 23:47Speaker 1: the tip ball, had a quarterback hit on a blitz
- 23:50Speaker 1: as well.
- 23:51Speaker 2: In this game.
- 23:52Speaker 1: He flies, you know, he flies around it, plays all
- 23:55Speaker 1: over the field. It's kind of crazy that he a
- 23:58Speaker 1: fourth round pick, played in all these snaps on defense.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Now he's getting the production to back it up as well.
- 24:04Speaker 1: This was a fine, good This was a good scouting
- 24:06Speaker 1: fine by the Patriots and they were right about this pick.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's we talk a lot during the draft
- 24:11Speaker 4: about you're not just necessarily drafting guy to draft him.
- 24:15Speaker 4: You don't and ironically on day three is more when
- 24:18Speaker 4: you don't have to follow this rule. It's more about
- 24:20Speaker 4: the top one hundred. But they its applies to Wilson here.
- 24:23Speaker 4: You don't draft a guy because like, oh, we like him,
- 24:25Speaker 4: he's good. We're not sure what role he'll play, but
- 24:27Speaker 4: we'll figure it out, right, We just we just want him.
- 24:30Speaker 4: You really want to pick players with an idea of
- 24:32Speaker 4: this is what this guy is going to do for
- 24:34Speaker 4: us in the short term and the long term, on
- 24:35Speaker 4: and on, and Craig Woodson, I think is an example
- 24:37Speaker 4: of a guy who they had a role for that
- 24:40Speaker 4: fits well, always fit well in the role they were
- 24:43Speaker 4: putting him in. I think that's why, you know, and
- 24:45Speaker 4: I was in this group, some people weren't super high
- 24:47Speaker 4: on the pick.
- 24:47Speaker 1: It was the one non consensus pick that I feel
- 24:50Speaker 1: like everybody was again right.
- 24:51Speaker 4: And because the role that that he's in, I don't
- 24:54Speaker 4: know that we like pictured existing, but they had a
- 24:58Speaker 4: role to be filled and I think they filled perfectly
- 25:00Speaker 4: and and it's it's worked out and that's how that's
- 25:03Speaker 4: how you hit on on day four. You talk about
- 25:05Speaker 4: hitting singles in the draft, Yeah, you know, that's how
- 25:07Speaker 4: you hit a lot more in a single on day three.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a starting caliber player. And you know, in
- 25:13Speaker 1: the fourth round, which is you know, huge for this team,
- 25:16Speaker 1: and they needed that. They need not only do they
- 25:19Speaker 1: need to hit at the top of the draft, they
- 25:21Speaker 1: needed to start hitting on some of these gems as well.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And I know that they you know, they hit on
- 25:25Speaker 1: like the Booties and the Pop Douglases, you know, during
- 25:28Speaker 1: the end of the Belichick years too. But hitting on
- 25:31Speaker 1: a Craig Woodson in the fourth round is is crucial
- 25:33Speaker 1: for their team building because you're not gonna it's not
- 25:35Speaker 1: all going to be you know, top five picks, like
- 25:37Speaker 1: it's not all going to be Drake Mason, Will Campbell's,
- 25:39Speaker 1: so they had to hit on some of these guys.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Anthony Jennings another one that I just wrote down. I
- 25:45Speaker 1: thought he was really disruptive in this game. He had
- 25:47Speaker 1: the sack, he had a couple of hurries in this
- 25:49Speaker 1: game as well. Harold Landry is not right he's not healthy. No,
- 25:53Speaker 1: he's gutting it out with a little bit of opportunity
- 25:56Speaker 1: that they're giving him. And Anthony Jennings has taken that
- 26:01Speaker 1: role opposite of Klevon Chase On and has played it
- 26:04Speaker 1: at a really really high level. And I don't know
- 26:07Speaker 1: that could have been a really big sort of Jenga
- 26:10Speaker 1: piece if they had pulled that out with Harold Landry
- 26:14Speaker 1: and they didn't really have anybody that was capable of
- 26:17Speaker 1: replacing him, then that would have been a huge issue,
- 26:21Speaker 1: you know, whether it had been in the run game
- 26:23Speaker 1: or the pass game. So being able to have Anthony
- 26:27Speaker 1: Jennings just kind of step up and step into this role,
- 26:30Speaker 1: you know, they kind of I don't want to say
- 26:32Speaker 1: they got lucky, but they evaluated the safety position correctly.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They moved on from Jabrill Peppers, and they moved on
- 26:38Speaker 1: from Kyle Duggar, and they put Craig Woodson and Jalen
- 26:42Speaker 1: Hawkins in and they were right.
- 26:43Speaker 2: They knew it. They were correct.
- 26:45Speaker 1: They held on to Anthony Jennings, and I don't know
- 26:49Speaker 1: if that was because he didn't have.
- 26:50Speaker 2: A market like who knows what the real.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Reasons were for holding on from Anthony jen to Anthony Jennings.
- 26:56Speaker 2: But they did, and it's paid huge.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Dividends that Landry is compromising, is not himself. It's paid
- 27:04Speaker 1: huge dividends. He's been a starting caliber player for them
- 27:07Speaker 1: in the playoff and.
- 27:07Speaker 4: It's credit tam Free Jennings. Like we talked about this
- 27:09Speaker 4: in camp. He looked like he was going to get cut. Yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 4: just based on how they were using him. And was
- 27:14Speaker 4: it the second or I think it was the second
- 27:16Speaker 4: preseason game.
- 27:17Speaker 3: He was just awesome.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and he forced their hand, and you can do
- 27:21Speaker 4: that at times, especially on a roster that needed turnover,
- 27:24Speaker 4: was a lesser roster at the time. It was a
- 27:27Speaker 4: coaching staff that was at the front office that was
- 27:29Speaker 4: clearly going to overturn things.
- 27:31Speaker 3: He forced their hand to keep them.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 4: He was just that good and so he deserves a
- 27:35Speaker 4: lot of credit in that too. But yeah, he's he's
- 27:37Speaker 4: kind of stepped into a key role for them here.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Okay, So that was the defense. I mean, there's a
- 27:41Speaker 1: lot of other things. I could probably gush about it
- 27:43Speaker 1: with the defense, but I think that does the trick.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Moving over to the offense, there were some things that
- 27:48Speaker 1: I thought were good, even though it was a pretty
- 27:50Speaker 1: sloppy game. I just want to isolate, you know, some
- 27:53Speaker 1: of the things we're going to talk about with Drake
- 27:54Speaker 1: May that weren't on the goods. With the three touchdown
- 27:57Speaker 1: passes that were all spectacular throws.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I would say that one of Douglas.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Is more a spectacular play, you know, in terms of
- 28:04Speaker 1: dealing with the pressure and with the cover zero there
- 28:07Speaker 1: and sort of having an answer for that look. But
- 28:10Speaker 1: the throat of digs and the throat of booty. The
- 28:13Speaker 1: booty catch is one of the best catches I've seen
- 28:15Speaker 1: in person. I mean, that was just an unbelievable catch.
- 28:18Speaker 1: But these are the types of plays that even in
- 28:21Speaker 1: a game where I don't think he played particularly well.
- 28:23Speaker 2: On the whole of the game.
- 28:26Speaker 1: This is why the Patriots are also advancing is because
- 28:29Speaker 1: their quarterback keeps on making three or four plays a
- 28:32Speaker 1: game that are elite level plays that Justin Herbert and C. J.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Stroud have not been able to make for their teams.
- 28:39Speaker 1: And again, even on days where he hasn't been at
- 28:42Speaker 1: his best, Drake May has still made a handful of
- 28:46Speaker 1: plays that have elevated the Patriots and put the Patriots
- 28:49Speaker 1: in a position to win the football game. So whether
- 28:52Speaker 1: it was you know, in the second half against the
- 28:55Speaker 1: Chargers or the Booty.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Touchdown here, those are plays that the opponent is not getting.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And I look at all these advanced metrics that I love,
- 29:04Speaker 1: and C. J. Stroud and Drake May both did not
- 29:07Speaker 1: grade out well in this game. I actually think Stroud
- 29:10Speaker 1: actually had a higher QBR, which is crazy.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I know what I saw.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But Drake May made the better plays in the game. Yeah, right,
- 29:17Speaker 1: like he made the higher level plays. He made the
- 29:19Speaker 1: elite level plays. Even though the down to down success
- 29:23Speaker 1: rate was terrible. Those three individual plays and why the
- 29:27Speaker 1: Patriots advanced.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Yeah, and this is what it means being a high
- 29:31Speaker 4: level quarterback. Sometimes you're not gonna go out and throw
- 29:32Speaker 4: four hundred yards and three touchdowns every day. That's just
- 29:35Speaker 4: it's the National Football League, especially in the playoffs, not
- 29:37Speaker 4: going to happen. When you're having a down day. Can
- 29:39Speaker 4: you still make a player too to get your team
- 29:41Speaker 4: over the top, especially when the other guy can't. And
- 29:42Speaker 4: that's what Drake May did. Now, you don't want to
- 29:45Speaker 4: do that every game either. That's not good, that's not sustainable.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Somebody in Buffalo just got his coach fired by doing that,
- 29:51Speaker 4: but you we can talk about that well, so he
- 29:55Speaker 4: maynies do a better job holding onto the football first
- 29:57Speaker 4: and foremost, and that's combination things that him that's the
- 30:00Speaker 4: offensive line will get in all of that. But he
- 30:04Speaker 4: made the plays that Justin Herbert couldn't make. He made
- 30:06Speaker 4: the plays that CJ. Just Draft couldn't make. And that's
- 30:08Speaker 4: the difference right now, and that there is a level
- 30:11Speaker 4: of high level quarterbacking to that in the macro and
- 30:14Speaker 4: the micro. You don't want to be in that situation
- 30:17Speaker 4: where it's just three plays deciding the game.
- 30:19Speaker 3: You want to play a little.
- 30:20Speaker 4: More level and a little more comfortable football than what
- 30:22Speaker 4: Drake may is doing right now.
- 30:23Speaker 3: But credit to him.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Him and the receivers are making the plays that the
- 30:27Speaker 4: few plays they need to make to get over the
- 30:28Speaker 4: top with the defense playing spectacularly.
- 30:31Speaker 2: One hundred per Yeah, it's been the difference.
- 30:33Speaker 1: And I know that the defense I set at the
- 30:36Speaker 1: top of the show of the defense is driven the
- 30:38Speaker 1: bus and they're why they're in the AFC Championship game.
- 30:40Speaker 2: And that's one hundred percent true.
- 30:42Speaker 1: But without these three or four plays a game against
- 30:45Speaker 1: the Chargers and against the Texans, the Patriots would not
- 30:48Speaker 1: be advancing either, so you have to kind of, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: say the good and the bad. There the other couple
- 30:53Speaker 1: of things I had on the offense. On the goods,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I actually thought on the whole Will Campbell removed from
- 31:01Speaker 1: this conversation. I thought the rest of the offensive line
- 31:04Speaker 1: held up pretty well in this game.
- 31:05Speaker 3: I thought Jared Wilson struggled too. The right side was great.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Morgan Moses was unbelievable.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Jared Wilson I only had for two pressures in the game.
- 31:13Speaker 1: He was the other one that had a couple pressures allowed.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Morgan Moses and Garrett Bradbury both were clean and on
- 31:20Speaker 1: when it allowed. One got beat by Rankins on one play.
- 31:24Speaker 1: I actually didn't think the pressure right was all that
- 31:26Speaker 1: bad in this game. PFF had it at twenty five percent.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Next Gen had a twenty five. I would say, you know,
- 31:32Speaker 1: somewhere in that twenty five to thirty ranges about right,
- 31:36Speaker 1: Will Campbell, we'll get to.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Like, well, you know, I think there was some of
- 31:39Speaker 3: it too, is like may holding the ball too long?
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and we'll get to all of that.
- 31:42Speaker 1: But I actually watching it back, I felt like they
- 31:47Speaker 1: had a lot more clean pockets and it felt like
- 31:49Speaker 1: watching it live. And I think that this tends to
- 31:52Speaker 1: happen with the offensive line and with pass protection in general.
- 31:55Speaker 1: When you have three catastrophic plays like the strip sacks were,
- 32:00Speaker 1: it just kind of throws out everything else, you know,
- 32:03Speaker 1: And I get that, and I'm not trying to, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 1: absolve or or detract from that or not mention it.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But when I went back and watched.
- 32:13Speaker 1: It, I thought that there were like probably thirty to
- 32:17Speaker 1: twenty five to thirty decent pockets and then three horrible
- 32:21Speaker 1: pockets like that can get your beat.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent, And that's why it's on the list.
- 32:25Speaker 1: But I think it worthy of mentioning, especially Morgan Moses'
- 32:29Speaker 1: performance in this game. Morgan Moses pitching a shutout against
- 32:32Speaker 1: Daniel Hunter is extremely impressive. Yeah, And the one sack
- 32:36Speaker 1: that was happened, you know, on his side, Drake May
- 32:39Speaker 1: drifted into and I put that one more on May
- 32:42Speaker 1: than I did on Moses. The fumble that was backed
- 32:44Speaker 1: up near the Patriots own goal line, I felt like
- 32:47Speaker 1: was more on Drake May. So in general, I just
- 32:50Speaker 1: thought that the line was much better than I thought
- 32:52Speaker 1: it was watching live. The last one here, I'm just
- 32:56Speaker 1: gonna gush a little bit about this. The six minute
- 33:00Speaker 1: drive in the fourth quarter was poetry like that is
- 33:03Speaker 1: cinema like that was We're just gonna run it right
- 33:06Speaker 1: down your throats. You know we're running it. We know
- 33:09Speaker 1: we're running it. Uh just you know, four minute offense,
- 33:13Speaker 1: situational football. Let's close this thing out to run it
- 33:17Speaker 1: against that defense off your own four yard line like that.
- 33:20Speaker 1: That was some big boy football like that is championship
- 33:24Speaker 1: caliber stuff. It was really freaking good.
- 33:27Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I was saying to my buddy like kind of joking,
- 33:30Speaker 4: kind of not is that the bet one of the
- 33:33Speaker 4: best drives in Patriots history that didn't result in points. Yeah, like,
- 33:39Speaker 4: obviously you want to end with points, but if you're
- 33:41Speaker 4: not gonna get points at for the for the moment
- 33:43Speaker 4: that they were in right there, hell of a drive,
- 33:48Speaker 4: hell of a drive to put that essentially put the
- 33:49Speaker 4: game away.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was fantastic.
- 33:52Speaker 1: And Mike on Wanhu on that drive that was we're
- 33:55Speaker 1: running behind seventy one and seventy six to the Promised Land,
- 33:59Speaker 1: and those two eyes just more more's Moses and on Wenne,
- 34:03Speaker 1: but especially on Wenne with some of the reach blocks
- 34:05Speaker 1: that he made in their zone schemes to get them
- 34:07Speaker 1: off the goal line was fantastic.
- 34:09Speaker 7: You know.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Efkein Chisholm through some good blocks in that drive too,
- 34:13Speaker 1: had a couple of good ones. Jack Westover, I thought
- 34:16Speaker 1: was actually pretty good on that drive as well. You know,
- 34:18Speaker 1: they got the sixth offensive lineman in there, which we'll
- 34:21Speaker 1: get to in a second, and they just ran the
- 34:23Speaker 1: ball right down their throats and and also just mentioning
- 34:27Speaker 1: this real quick, the Texans were ripping at the football
- 34:32Speaker 1: as they should be in that situation. And we all
- 34:35Speaker 1: know the fumbling issues knock on wood that remind me
- 34:37Speaker 1: Stevenson had earlier on in the season. Every single time
- 34:41Speaker 1: I you know, it's whether this show or I'm listening
- 34:43Speaker 1: to your station or whatever, I still hear people will
- 34:45Speaker 1: be like, I'm still worried every single time he carries
- 34:48Speaker 1: the ball that he's gonna fumble. They were coming after
- 34:51Speaker 1: the ball on that drive and he was grinding out
- 34:55Speaker 1: some dirty yards like that wasn't like he was he
- 34:57Speaker 1: had these giant holes to run through, you know, like
- 35:01Speaker 1: you see sometimes that was big boy football.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And he held onto the ball and he rammed.
- 35:06Speaker 4: It then went down and they went right at to
- 35:08Speaker 4: Neil Hunter, right at Will Anderson to really good run stoppers.
- 35:11Speaker 4: Like those guys don't get enough credit for being the
- 35:13Speaker 4: run stoppers they are because they were going off tackle
- 35:15Speaker 4: good amount on that drive.
- 35:16Speaker 3: They really weren't testing the middle.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 35:19Speaker 3: That was awesome.
- 35:20Speaker 4: That's that was my saying right there about established the run,
- 35:24Speaker 4: established line of scrimmage, where him now that that that's
- 35:26Speaker 4: what I watched the game for. That was even though
- 35:28Speaker 4: it's in points, that was that was awesome. And they
- 35:31Speaker 4: have I think it's the first run of that drive
- 35:33Speaker 4: right where they try to hemmerm Entre into the sideline
- 35:36Speaker 4: and he cuts back in and he willingly takes the
- 35:38Speaker 4: hit to stay in bounds and.
- 35:39Speaker 3: He was running.
- 35:40Speaker 2: That was actually the next drive.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Okay, either way, that was a great one. That wasn't
- 35:43Speaker 3: mentioned that that was.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Another run that was you know, just situational football. Knowing
- 35:46Speaker 1: not to go out of bounds. Also Al Scheier like
- 35:49Speaker 1: try to take his head off, which of course he did,
- 35:52Speaker 1: and so you know, it was it was just great
- 35:56Speaker 1: to watch. You know that that is when the run
- 35:59Speaker 1: game really in the playoffs. And I also just thought,
- 36:03Speaker 1: you know, not to completely be pants off about this,
- 36:06Speaker 1: but this was this was awesome.
- 36:07Speaker 8: This was not do it.
- 36:08Speaker 2: This was football at its finest.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Uh. Like, that's you always get on my guys for
- 36:13Speaker 1: not doing that kind of thing, right like the like
- 36:16Speaker 1: you know, you always get on the Kyle Shanahans of
- 36:17Speaker 1: the world for throwing and like in that situation, that
- 36:21Speaker 1: game was it was twenty eight to sixteen, there was
- 36:24Speaker 1: ten minutes left. You were not playing to score points
- 36:27Speaker 1: at that point. You were playing the clock. You were
- 36:29Speaker 1: trying to chew clock. And they ran six minutes off
- 36:32Speaker 1: the clock.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Away.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Not only did they run six minutes, they ran ten plays.
- 36:38Speaker 1: They got it out to the fifties so that they
- 36:40Speaker 1: could punt and flip the field.
- 36:43Speaker 7: It was.
- 36:43Speaker 1: It was just so you admit, under perfect matters in
- 36:47Speaker 1: this stuff is relevant and it it can differentiate.
- 36:49Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 36:50Speaker 4: I'm just making just keep that, keep that although there's
- 36:53Speaker 4: not many of your guys left in the playoffs, and
- 36:55Speaker 4: are there any Sean McVay, Oh yeah, Well I've always
- 36:58Speaker 4: said mcveigh's a McVeigh I think has figured that out.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Mcveag's the one that has is better about that because
- 37:04Speaker 4: I think he had Wade Phillips for years, and Wade
- 37:06Speaker 4: Phillips drilled it into his head that that stuff is important.
- 37:09Speaker 4: So it was great, But that was that was That's
- 37:11Speaker 4: how you manage the clock. That's how you close out
- 37:13Speaker 4: a game. You don't have you don't go bombs away.
- 37:16Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the bads.
- 37:18Speaker 1: So handful of things on the bads and then a
- 37:20Speaker 1: couple of things on the stuff that gets to beat UH.
- 37:23Speaker 1: In terms of the play calling offensively, I don't really
- 37:27Speaker 1: have any like super major gripes with Josh McDaniel's in
- 37:31Speaker 1: this game. It seemed to me like it was a
- 37:34Speaker 1: pretty simple UH plan in terms of the passing game.
- 37:38Speaker 2: And I think the reason for it.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Was all of these like crazy schemed open plays are
- 37:44Speaker 1: usually longer developing plays. Yeah, you need more time back there.
- 37:48Speaker 1: You need to either execute a fake or execute.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Some sort of you know, double cut route.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Yeah, like multiple routes, combinations and levels and guys crossing
- 37:59Speaker 1: and all this different stuff. And this definitely just seemed
- 38:02Speaker 1: like we're gonna run nine to eight nine, you know,
- 38:04Speaker 1: go post go and wherever that one on one is
- 38:07Speaker 1: when Drake is thrown up and hopefully kishon Boody catches
- 38:11Speaker 1: a one handed catch against Derek Stingley at some point.
- 38:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was sort of what I.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Think they their downfield passing game looked like because they
- 38:20Speaker 1: just knew they weren't going to have enough time in
- 38:22Speaker 1: the pocket to sit there and wait for this like
- 38:25Speaker 1: you know, well orchestrated pretty drawn up play to come
- 38:29Speaker 1: to fruition.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Which probably is gonna be the same thing this week.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But so I think that that was part of the reason,
- 38:34Speaker 1: because I know that a lot of people were asking, like,
- 38:36Speaker 1: why weren't there guys open, you know, and stuff like that,
- 38:39Speaker 1: and a lot of that has to do with the
- 38:41Speaker 1: Texans coverage, Like the Texans are great in the back end.
- 38:44Speaker 2: We talked about that all last week.
- 38:46Speaker 1: But I think some of it had to do with
- 38:47Speaker 1: the fact that, you really it's a tougher time to
- 38:50Speaker 1: start the scheme guys open when you know the ball
- 38:53Speaker 1: needs to come out as quickly as it does.
- 38:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:55Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 38:56Speaker 4: My bigger thing with the play calling was could they
- 38:58Speaker 4: have done more six oz with Munford because they've done
- 39:01Speaker 4: more to help Campbell on the left side that I
- 39:03Speaker 4: didn't think this. I didn't think McDaniels was terrible in
- 39:06Speaker 4: this game. I didn't think it was his best game either.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was what I had written down.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I was really surprised at how little they went, like,
- 39:16Speaker 1: you know, let's send two guys in the route max
- 39:19Speaker 1: protect play action. We're gonna put seven eight guys on
- 39:22Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage and try to block it. We're
- 39:24Speaker 1: gonna put you know, we're gonna get Monford out there
- 39:26Speaker 1: with the six offensive line. They only threw one pass
- 39:29Speaker 1: out of six offensive line the entire game. It was
- 39:31Speaker 1: that Austin Hooper play on the last drive of the game.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So they didn't do it. It wasn't part of their
- 39:36Speaker 1: game plan. It wasn't part of what they did. I
- 39:40Speaker 1: was shocked by that. I thought that would be a
- 39:42Speaker 1: major part of the game plan, just like it was
- 39:44Speaker 1: against the Chargers. You know, let's get Munford out there.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Can we get seven.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Guys maybe eight with the back and the protection.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Let's send Kyle Williams and Digs out on deep routes
- 39:55Speaker 1: down the field and let's try to block it and
- 39:57Speaker 1: get you know, three v two down the field and
- 40:00Speaker 1: somebody's going to be one on one and hopefully we
- 40:02Speaker 1: win a few routes that way, and they really didn't.
- 40:04Speaker 1: That wasn't the strategy was much more spread the field
- 40:08Speaker 1: type of passing game instead, and I was pretty surprised
- 40:12Speaker 1: by that. And I do think that some of that
- 40:14Speaker 1: did lend itself to Will Campbell being isolated maybe a
- 40:17Speaker 1: little bit too much. I'm not trying to absolve Will Campbell.
- 40:20Speaker 1: He's got to be better, but I thought that, you know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: other than some chips here and there, it wasn't like
- 40:26Speaker 1: they were doing anything super crazy to try to help
- 40:29Speaker 1: him out. And I thought that that was one thing
- 40:32Speaker 1: that you could kind of second guess from McDaniels in
- 40:34Speaker 1: this game. I heard Greg on with You Know Your
- 40:37Speaker 1: Station yesterday saying that maybe he outsmarted himself, thinking the
- 40:41Speaker 1: Texans are going to prepare for the six to zero
- 40:43Speaker 1: line all weeks, I'm not going to use it, which
- 40:46Speaker 1: might have been the case. But then maybe you know
- 40:47Speaker 1: a little bit too much in your head, you know,
- 40:49Speaker 1: by doing that right like, that was clearly something that
- 40:52Speaker 1: they probably had an advantage in. And it's not lost
- 40:55Speaker 1: on me that they put Munford on the field for
- 40:58Speaker 1: that drive that we just gushed about out and went right.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Right down the throat, So hopefully they kind of figured
- 41:04Speaker 4: that out and the hus for next week. But yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 4: I thought, I everybody knows I've raved about Josh this year.
- 41:10Speaker 4: You've raved about Josh here. I think he's had a
- 41:11Speaker 4: great season. That wasn't one of his better games of
- 41:14Speaker 4: the year.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so i'd be interesting to see, you know, a
- 41:17Speaker 1: very different test with Denver. Denver is they're more of
- 41:21Speaker 1: a chaotic defense. You know, the detections are more of
- 41:24Speaker 1: like do what you do simple defense, structure defense. This
- 41:28Speaker 1: is going to be more of a chaos game on
- 41:30Speaker 1: Sunday against Denver. So it's very different. So I don't
- 41:34Speaker 1: know exactly how that's going to change things, but just
- 41:36Speaker 1: something that I I agreed, you know, I think we're
- 41:39Speaker 1: both on the same page with that.
- 41:41Speaker 2: The other couple of bads here, I did not think that.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Travon Henderson played well in this game, and this was
- 41:49Speaker 1: one of those games where I just didn't think he
- 41:51Speaker 1: was seeing it very well in terms of the rush
- 41:53Speaker 1: lanes and you know his run reads, especially on the
- 41:56Speaker 1: interior runs. I thought that there was one player perticular
- 42:00Speaker 1: I actually sent it to you on Monday, where if
- 42:04Speaker 1: he had just continued on his path right up the middle.
- 42:07Speaker 1: I think he might have scored, you know, it was
- 42:09Speaker 1: it could have been like a forty fifty yard touchdown,
- 42:12Speaker 1: that's how much open space he had with his speed.
- 42:16Speaker 1: It just felt like he was breaking, you know, cutting
- 42:19Speaker 1: into contact, like just not seeing it right. I also
- 42:22Speaker 1: just am really surprised that him on verticals out of
- 42:27Speaker 1: the backfield has not been a big part of their
- 42:30Speaker 1: offense all year, Like they haven't done that with him
- 42:32Speaker 1: at all. You know, wheel routes, you get him in
- 42:35Speaker 1: the seams, you know, whatever the case may be. I
- 42:38Speaker 1: just I'm really shocked that that's not been a bigger
- 42:41Speaker 1: part of what they have done with him, because we
- 42:42Speaker 1: saw it in camp in the preseason, and then it
- 42:45Speaker 1: just hasn't been.
- 42:46Speaker 4: I've been waiting for it, and I thought this was
- 42:47Speaker 4: the week, like we I think we talked about talking
- 42:49Speaker 4: about shows get him out. Why get him out, you know,
- 42:52Speaker 4: put him out on the line of scrimmage and have
- 42:54Speaker 4: him run. Look, it's there was kind of a trend
- 42:57Speaker 4: here outside of Craig Woodson, who he talked about earlier,
- 42:59Speaker 4: like a lot of the young guys struggled. Campbell did
- 43:01Speaker 4: not have a great game Wilson, who were just talking
- 43:04Speaker 4: about Henderson. Yeah, you know, Drake Bay second year guy
- 43:07Speaker 4: had his issues, so I yeah, I thought there was
- 43:11Speaker 4: more there for Travon Henderson against a tougher defense, against
- 43:14Speaker 4: a quicker defense. I wonder if it's sped up on
- 43:16Speaker 4: him again a little bit. But another guy that they
- 43:19Speaker 4: need to be better for next week.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought that. You know, that's a good point,
- 43:23Speaker 2: you know, a couple of these guys.
- 43:24Speaker 1: And this is sort of what I wrote as well,
- 43:27Speaker 1: like this is a baptism by fire for all the
- 43:30Speaker 1: young Patriots on offense, May Campbell, Henderson, Wilson. This is
- 43:35Speaker 1: two of the best defenses in the NFL that they
- 43:38Speaker 1: played in back to back weeks. And I think the
- 43:39Speaker 1: Texans have a case to be the best defense in
- 43:41Speaker 1: the entire league. And this is what you've gotten thrown
- 43:43Speaker 1: into in your first taste of the playoffs, Like this
- 43:46Speaker 1: is not they have not had, at least on that
- 43:48Speaker 1: side of the ball. They have not had the luxury
- 43:51Speaker 1: of like a tomato can game where they get, you know,
- 43:53Speaker 1: a watered down defense that really probably shouldn't be in
- 43:56Speaker 1: the playoffs and they're able to get their feet wet
- 43:58Speaker 1: at this stage at this level. This has been right
- 44:01Speaker 1: into the fire and they've struggled. The rookies have struggled,
- 44:05Speaker 1: and May has struggled a little bit, and I think
- 44:07Speaker 1: Henderson's in that category as well. And we'll get to
- 44:10Speaker 1: May here in a second. The other thing just going
- 44:13Speaker 1: back to the defense, and then I want to just
- 44:15Speaker 1: kind of focus in on May and Campbell for the
- 44:17Speaker 1: last part of this. There were a couple of coverage
- 44:20Speaker 1: busts in this game that I didn't love, especially in
- 44:23Speaker 1: their quarters structures when they had the four deep guys
- 44:25Speaker 1: across the field. When you go quarters, you usually you
- 44:28Speaker 1: have four deep and then you might have only two
- 44:30Speaker 1: or three guys underneath, so there is going to be
- 44:33Speaker 1: open space underneath the defense in those shells. But the
- 44:36Speaker 1: forty two yard pass the Dalton Schultz was just a
- 44:38Speaker 1: straight up coverage bust.
- 44:40Speaker 2: There was nobody out there on him. Marcus Jones, I
- 44:43Speaker 2: think was supposed.
- 44:43Speaker 4: To be in that flat area that one, So is
- 44:47Speaker 4: that one you almost put on the pass rush because
- 44:50Speaker 4: Stroud was back there for a long time.
- 44:51Speaker 2: And so Stroud.
- 44:52Speaker 1: I think what happened was is Stroud he climbed the
- 44:55Speaker 1: pocket and it was looking like he was about to run. Yes,
- 44:59Speaker 1: so he came in yeah, and Schultz was blocking and
- 45:02Speaker 1: then released late into the pattern has like a check down, right,
- 45:05Speaker 1: And so Marcus Jones came to play the scramble, came
- 45:07Speaker 1: to play the quarterback and and Schultz kind of leaked out.
- 45:11Speaker 4: So again that's when I look at and I'm like,
- 45:12Speaker 4: do you put that almost as much on the pass
- 45:14Speaker 4: rush as you do the secondary?
- 45:15Speaker 3: Like you got to get home sooner?
- 45:16Speaker 1: Maybe a little bit, but I you know this in
- 45:18Speaker 1: terms of you know, in that situation, not to pick
- 45:22Speaker 1: on Marcus Jones, but like you would rather play like
- 45:25Speaker 1: let the quarterback run. Like if the quarterback runs, you
- 45:28Speaker 1: just come up and make a tackle and it's you know,
- 45:30Speaker 1: maybe it is a first down still, but it's probably
- 45:32Speaker 1: like a ten yard game, especially with a guy like Stroud.
- 45:35Speaker 1: This is not Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, right, so
- 45:37Speaker 1: you know you get eight nine ten yards out of
- 45:40Speaker 1: it instead of forty two. So that's always one where
- 45:42Speaker 1: I kind of err on the side of, you know,
- 45:45Speaker 1: play play the receiver first, and then if he does,
- 45:48Speaker 1: you know, break and tan and and get on the
- 45:51Speaker 1: other side of the line of scrimmage. Just rally to
- 45:53Speaker 1: the ball and get him down right, and I think
- 45:55Speaker 1: you live with that damage. The other one, Stroud just
- 45:58Speaker 1: missed the guy in the flat. But there was another
- 46:00Speaker 1: one later on in the game. It wasn't Schultz because
- 46:02Speaker 1: he was out of the game at this point. It
- 46:04Speaker 1: was there other tight end Stover I think it was
- 46:06Speaker 1: was also wide open in the flat.
- 46:08Speaker 2: So just some little things there.
- 46:10Speaker 1: I thought, you know, the red zone sequence to where
- 46:13Speaker 1: they got the touchdown wiped out by that penalty or
- 46:16Speaker 1: the illegal shift penalty. Stroud just didn't see two open
- 46:20Speaker 1: receivers on the fall the following next two plays, So
- 46:23Speaker 1: like there's a little bit of that going on, you know.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I think it's the same thing as the Charger game.
- 46:27Speaker 4: In fact, always said at the beginning, one quarterback made
- 46:29Speaker 4: the plays that are there to be made, the other
- 46:30Speaker 4: the moment was too big or he got too flustered
- 46:32Speaker 4: or whatever you want.
- 46:33Speaker 9: To call it.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Okay, So not like again the bad Like it's not
- 46:37Speaker 1: like something that I'm like panicked about or anything like that.
- 46:41Speaker 1: But on every film, you're going to watch it back
- 46:43Speaker 1: and see opportunities for the opposing quarterback. And I thought,
- 46:46Speaker 1: watching this game back if Stroud didn't play as bad
- 46:49Speaker 1: as he did, there was probably a lot not probably,
- 46:52Speaker 1: there was a lot of yards he left on the
- 46:55Speaker 1: field in this game. And so you know, I don't
- 46:57Speaker 1: know if Stidham's going to be able to take advantage
- 46:58Speaker 1: of it, but Matthew Stafford or Sam Darnold will. So
- 47:03Speaker 1: you know, that's the difference between maybe winning the Super
- 47:06Speaker 1: Bowl and not winning the Super Bowls getting some of
- 47:08Speaker 1: these things tightened up. All right, let's talk about May
- 47:11Speaker 1: and the turnovers and Will Campbell and the turnovers. With May,
- 47:15Speaker 1: I separated the turnovers with some of the other things
- 47:18Speaker 1: that I saw between.
- 47:20Speaker 2: The good and the stuff that gets you or the
- 47:21Speaker 2: bad and the stuff that gets you beat.
- 47:22Speaker 1: So in the bad category, I kind of chucked some
- 47:26Speaker 1: of the sprays or some of the misthrows up to
- 47:28Speaker 1: the weather.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It was a tough weather game.
- 47:31Speaker 1: This is two weeks in a row now that both
- 47:33Speaker 1: quarterbacks and we're talking about I know some people probably
- 47:37Speaker 1: don't think much of Straut at this point, but justin
- 47:39Speaker 1: Herbert and Drake May both throwing the ball under their
- 47:43Speaker 1: normal sort of level of accuracy, tells me that that
- 47:46Speaker 1: was probably a pretty tough condition to throw the ball.
- 47:49Speaker 1: In this game, there was four or five throws like
- 47:52Speaker 1: that again with Drake May, where he either flat out.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Missed or he just kind of missed in a small win.
- 48:00Speaker 1: You know. Like one of them was a deep ball
- 48:04Speaker 1: to Kyle Williams where Kyle Williams has Lassiter beat. He's
- 48:07Speaker 1: behind Lassiter for a big play and Drake May just
- 48:11Speaker 1: kind of threw it to his outside shoulder just a
- 48:13Speaker 1: little bit too much and made it a difficult catch.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Normally you see that ball out in front of Kyle Williams.
- 48:18Speaker 1: If Drake May throws that ball in front of Kyle
- 48:20Speaker 1: Williams and stride, it might be a touchdown. You know,
- 48:22Speaker 1: he's behind him. And so there was just little things
- 48:25Speaker 1: like that as he sort of gets used to playing
- 48:28Speaker 1: in the bad weather that I noticed with him on film.
- 48:31Speaker 1: The other thing that I was a little bit more
- 48:33Speaker 1: alarmed about that might you know, kind of fall into
- 48:35Speaker 1: both categories. The drifting in the pocket seems to be
- 48:38Speaker 1: back and the issues that he was having. You know,
- 48:42Speaker 1: some of these dropback story he's getting strip sacked feel
- 48:45Speaker 1: a little bit too much like rookie Drake May, you know,
- 48:48Speaker 1: where he's just kind of drifting into pressure, drifting into
- 48:52Speaker 1: problems and causing problems in the pocket, especially the strip
- 48:56Speaker 1: sack when he was backed up on his goal line
- 48:58Speaker 1: where he just went right did right into Daniel Hunter.
- 49:01Speaker 2: You know, you just right into him. So those ones,
- 49:04Speaker 2: you know, those type of things I think are.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Just more to me and the bads like that's not
- 49:09Speaker 1: you're going to lose games because of that necessarily, I
- 49:12Speaker 1: don't think. But these are little things that are starting
- 49:14Speaker 1: to pop up on film with him that you'd like
- 49:17Speaker 1: to see him start to get corrected.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Yeah, And the big thing for me is it's really
- 49:23Speaker 4: the first time this year he hasn't corrected an issue
- 49:26Speaker 4: after a game. A lot of the issues he had
- 49:29Speaker 4: against the Texans were similar issues he had against the Chargers.
- 49:32Speaker 4: So like when he's made those mistakes here, he comes
- 49:35Speaker 4: out the next week and he's better about it, and
- 49:37Speaker 4: he didn't do that this time. So whether it's because
- 49:40Speaker 4: it's the playoffs or higher level of defense, it's in
- 49:43Speaker 4: his head whatever, like these things need to be fixed.
- 49:47Speaker 3: And you gotta hope he can turn around quickly.
- 49:49Speaker 1: So those were sort of the little things that I
- 49:51Speaker 1: kind of put more in the bad category, the stuff
- 49:54Speaker 1: that gets to be I want to kind of talk
- 49:55Speaker 1: about all four fumbles and sort of divvy up the
- 49:58Speaker 1: blame here, blame pie. I thought there were two clear
- 50:01Speaker 1: turnover worthy plays on May, so he had four fumbles.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I thought two, and I'm of course taking the hail
- 50:07Speaker 1: Mary interception out of it. That doesn't count in any
- 50:10Speaker 1: of this. There were two clear turnover worthy plays. One
- 50:13Speaker 1: is the one I mentioned about him drifting into pressure
- 50:16Speaker 1: on the first strip.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Sack backed up on his own goal line. The other
- 50:19Speaker 2: one was, of.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Course, when he tried to scramble on the botched hand
- 50:23Speaker 1: off with Ramind Gray Stevenson and got the ball punched out.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I actually don't hate that he tried to run with
- 50:29Speaker 1: that one because the blocking was still blocking a run
- 50:32Speaker 1: play and it actually worked like they were actually getting
- 50:35Speaker 1: a push. So you know, two hands on the football.
- 50:38Speaker 1: You just got to protect the ball. You know, It's
- 50:39Speaker 1: that simple. And then the one backed up on the
- 50:42Speaker 1: goal line. You know, obviously when we also talk about situationally,
- 50:47Speaker 1: you know, getting backed up on your own goal line
- 50:49Speaker 1: and also getting stripsacked right before halftime, like those are
- 50:52Speaker 1: two situations where you just can't have it, like you know,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and you really really really lucky on the one on
- 50:59Speaker 1: the goal line that wasn't a fumble six like that
- 51:01Speaker 1: that easily could have been scooped and scored by the
- 51:04Speaker 1: Texans for a walk in touchdown, or even if they
- 51:07Speaker 1: just recover it. You know they're gonna be scrimmaging from
- 51:10Speaker 1: their own two yard line, right, So they are the
- 51:12Speaker 1: Patriots two yard line, I should say, so they're probably
- 51:14Speaker 1: gonna score touchdown on that play. He was very fortunate
- 51:17Speaker 1: with the fumble luck, so those two ones too, I
- 51:20Speaker 1: clearly put on him. There was then one stripsack, blindside
- 51:25Speaker 1: stripsack on Will Campbell that was flat out on Will Campbell,
- 51:29Speaker 1: like there's no there's no way you can survive a
- 51:32Speaker 1: sack that happens in two point four seconds like that is.
- 51:35Speaker 3: I think some of them were holding the ball too long.
- 51:37Speaker 3: That was not one of them, no, uh.
- 51:39Speaker 1: And then the third one, I kind of split the
- 51:43Speaker 1: baby here a little bit because I thought on the
- 51:46Speaker 1: one that he was backed up and on this one
- 51:48Speaker 1: he's loading up to throw downfield, right, And I have
- 51:51Speaker 1: no idea who he's trying to throw the ball.
- 51:53Speaker 4: Not just that, I think, isn't there an element of like,
- 51:58Speaker 4: because I know Brady used to do that, not just Brady,
- 52:01Speaker 4: like other quarterbacks have done this. I don't want to
- 52:02Speaker 4: hold them to the Brady standard, but like you, if
- 52:04Speaker 4: you sense that pressure is coming behind you, right, yeah,
- 52:07Speaker 4: you can't do the full wind up because you don't
- 52:10Speaker 4: have time or frankly the room.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:12Speaker 4: And it's like in basketball, if there's zero point five
- 52:16Speaker 4: seconds on the clock, you're not going to do your
- 52:18Speaker 4: full jump shot.
- 52:19Speaker 3: You don't have time.
- 52:20Speaker 4: You got to kind of quickly, so you know, I
- 52:22Speaker 4: in those moments, and he did this earlier this year.
- 52:25Speaker 4: And this is the whole when you talk about like
- 52:26Speaker 4: the Josh Allen thing, right, the little flip or this
- 52:29Speaker 4: or whatever, can you get out to somebody even if
- 52:31Speaker 4: you're just getting it to your running backs feet and
- 52:33Speaker 4: it's incomplete Like he'd been good about that, and I
- 52:36Speaker 4: thought in this game there were a couple of times
- 52:38Speaker 4: where he fully loaded up when like he very regardless
- 52:42Speaker 4: of who he's throwing to.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Yep, he didn't have time to fully load up. You
- 52:46Speaker 3: got to just kick that ball out of your eye.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I think we're saying the same thing, which is good
- 52:50Speaker 1: because your point's good too. Yeah, he's trying to hit
- 52:53Speaker 1: a guy that's like, you know, running a vertical route
- 52:56Speaker 1: down the field when he knows that he's probably one
- 52:59Speaker 1: on onto his blind side with Will Campbell against Will Anderson, Like,
- 53:04Speaker 1: you probably don't have the luxury now you want to
- 53:06Speaker 1: pick on McDaniel's there a little bit too for calling
- 53:09Speaker 1: vertical routes against that pass right totally valid, But I
- 53:13Speaker 1: also just think that to your point, like there's a
- 53:16Speaker 1: different sort of arm angle, different sort of like slot.
- 53:19Speaker 3: That you kind of come out of quickly.
- 53:21Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 53:21Speaker 1: And secondly, you know, you just the other stripsack that
- 53:26Speaker 1: we're kind of talking about here.
- 53:28Speaker 2: I'm just watching the film.
- 53:30Speaker 1: I think he's trying to throw the ball deep to Diggs, Yeah,
- 53:33Speaker 1: and then the other one, I think he's trying to
- 53:34Speaker 1: throw the ball deep to Pop And in both instances,
- 53:37Speaker 1: I feel like the guys are covered, so like I
- 53:39Speaker 1: feel like he's throwing he's fully winding up when he
- 53:43Speaker 1: knows that he's going up against an elite pass rusher.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he's fully winding up. And I don't exactly know
- 53:48Speaker 2: where he was trying to go.
- 53:49Speaker 4: I didn't even get to the point of looking for
- 53:51Speaker 4: he's trying to go, Like I I part of me
- 53:53Speaker 4: was like remember last year he had that problem where
- 53:57Speaker 4: he kept throwing the ball away like barely, Yeah, and
- 54:00Speaker 4: it got picked off a couple of times.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I know when he throws the ball away, now
- 54:03Speaker 3: he hums it.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 3: I kind of figured he was just winding up to
- 54:06Speaker 3: throw it away, but he was again when he throws
- 54:09Speaker 3: the ball away.
- 54:11Speaker 2: That would certainly be a better explanation, but it's.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Still you need to that's the one that throw it
- 54:16Speaker 3: at the running backs feet.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the and only he can answer that question right
- 54:20Speaker 1: of where he was trying to go with the football,
- 54:21Speaker 1: the one.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Uh, maybe he was going I don't know, Well, that's.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Just where his eyes and where he was pointing and everything.
- 54:27Speaker 1: It looked like where he was going the one to pop.
- 54:30Speaker 1: You know, maybe he was just going to try to
- 54:31Speaker 1: like him or nobody loft it.
- 54:33Speaker 2: See that's what I mean sort of thing.
- 54:36Speaker 1: You know, he did have, like Henry in the flat
- 54:38Speaker 1: that maybe he could have just taken the check down
- 54:40Speaker 1: and punted and that finished the drive with a kick, right,
- 54:43Speaker 1: Like that would have been better. Uh, the the one
- 54:45Speaker 1: that digs I just didn't think it was a great read.
- 54:48Speaker 1: You know, like they have the single high safety in
- 54:50Speaker 1: the middle of the field. Now the safety is reading
- 54:52Speaker 1: his eyes, so you know, you have to put that
- 54:54Speaker 1: out there. And I think this kind of comes back to,
- 54:57Speaker 1: you know, when you face a pass rush like that too,
- 54:59Speaker 1: Like he's looking at Diggs and Booty's one on one
- 55:02Speaker 1: on the back side with nobody over the top because
- 55:04Speaker 1: the safety is in the middle of the field and
- 55:05Speaker 1: he's getting moved. So like, ideally, if you have more time,
- 55:09Speaker 1: like you move the safety and then you come back
- 55:11Speaker 1: to Booty and you hit the one on one with Booty.
- 55:13Speaker 2: But this just wasn't that kind of game.
- 55:16Speaker 1: And I think that that's sort of the next iteration
- 55:19Speaker 1: for Drake May is the time in the pocket, like
- 55:21Speaker 1: understanding managing the game, understanding what you're going up against,
- 55:26Speaker 1: who you're facing, you know, is are my tackles one
- 55:29Speaker 1: on one? Do they have chip help? Do they not
- 55:32Speaker 1: have chip help? You know, one of those two strip
- 55:34Speaker 1: sacks they did. Campbell did have help one of them
- 55:37Speaker 1: he didn't, you know, like knowing these kinds of things
- 55:39Speaker 1: I think are the next iteration of him. The last
- 55:42Speaker 1: thing that we have to mention, you know, some of
- 55:44Speaker 1: this is on Will Campbell, and Will Campbell has to
- 55:46Speaker 1: play a lot better. I'm not ready and I think
- 55:49Speaker 1: that it's partially and I know people probably think that
- 55:52Speaker 1: I'm dodging it because we're Will Campbell guys.
- 55:54Speaker 4: You know, all the people want to just take their
- 55:55Speaker 4: victory lap on social media about him moving to guard.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Here, I'm just ready to have that conversation real quick.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Sorry, Yeah, I'm just not ready to have that conversation
- 56:03Speaker 1: because we're in the middle of a playoff run.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Like, like, that's an off season conversation to me. So
- 56:07Speaker 2: we'll get to that.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Well, I'll just say this, where are you getting a
- 56:11Speaker 4: better left tackle? Yeah, they're not gonna being free agency.
- 56:14Speaker 4: We've been through this and like at thirty two in
- 56:16Speaker 4: the draft, you can't just move him to pat yourself
- 56:19Speaker 4: on the back.
- 56:19Speaker 3: I told you he was a gord. If you get
- 56:21Speaker 3: worse at left tackle, it doesn't help you.
- 56:23Speaker 4: So and plus and I talked with David Andres about
- 56:26Speaker 4: some Monday. Do you think he's fully healthy?
- 56:30Speaker 1: I don't see any evidence that he's not, but there's
- 56:33Speaker 1: absolutely the case that that could be the case.
- 56:36Speaker 4: Well, I mean, he might not be showing it because
- 56:38Speaker 4: he's compensating, but like it's that it's his drive leg
- 56:40Speaker 4: it's the right leg, it's the right knee.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:43Speaker 4: So yeah, I just and also Will Anderson's a top
- 56:46Speaker 4: three pass run yeah, so not to not to I
- 56:49Speaker 4: know I'm making excuse here, not some excuse, but like
- 56:52Speaker 4: you don't want to make don't don't do the entire
- 56:56Speaker 4: season evaluation off one game.
- 56:58Speaker 1: I al would say that, you know, this is a conversation,
- 57:02Speaker 1: you know, in terms of his longevity there at the
- 57:03Speaker 1: position that i''ll you know, we can have real quick.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:07Speaker 1: I remember, you know, back in the day with Matt Light,
- 57:12Speaker 1: who was a Patriot Hall of Famer, a really solid
- 57:16Speaker 1: NFL left tackle for like a decade. Matt Light was
- 57:19Speaker 1: good fifteen out of twenty weeks out of the year,
- 57:24Speaker 1: seventeen out of twenty weeks out of the year. There
- 57:27Speaker 1: was two games and maybe three if you want to
- 57:30Speaker 1: count the playoff games that they faced against the guy
- 57:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna mention that he struggled Jason Taylor, Yeah, who
- 57:37Speaker 1: just flat out eight his lunch. Jason Taylor was a problem.
- 57:40Speaker 1: And Jason Taylor is it wearing a gold jacket. He
- 57:43Speaker 1: was an NFL Hall of Famer. And I think Will
- 57:45Speaker 1: Anderson and Miles Garrett are going to also be wearing
- 57:47Speaker 1: gold jackets someday. Yeah, Miles Garrett one hundred percent will
- 57:52Speaker 1: be Will Anderson if he continues on this track. The
- 57:54Speaker 1: other guy that he had trouble with Matt Light was
- 57:56Speaker 1: Dwight Freeny. Yeah, so those were two of the best
- 58:00Speaker 1: pass rushers of his era that were both in the
- 58:02Speaker 1: Pro Football Dray Freeney's in the Profleball Hall of Fame. Right,
- 58:05Speaker 1: they're they're both They're both in the Hall of Fame,
- 58:07Speaker 1: I think, And so do you do you make the
- 58:11Speaker 1: switch of Cambell going from left tackle to left guard,
- 58:16Speaker 1: because in two games against Miles Garrett and Will Anderson
- 58:20Speaker 1: he's given up four sacks, right, or do you look
- 58:23Speaker 1: at it and say, Okay, so we might need to
- 58:26Speaker 1: manage him schematically a little bit when we go up
- 58:29Speaker 1: a level to those elite, elite guys, But against ninety
- 58:33Speaker 1: percent of the league, he's gonna be perfectly fine at
- 58:36Speaker 1: left tackle. And I think that's the conversation that you
- 58:39Speaker 1: need to have. I would also mention I think that
- 58:43Speaker 1: he would be an outstanding run blocking guard. Yeah, I'm
- 58:46Speaker 1: not one hundred percent sure that moving him inside is
- 58:49Speaker 1: going to make him a better pass.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Player's just technical stuff that he needs to get better at.
- 58:53Speaker 4: And he's a rookie, right he's going to have the
- 58:56Speaker 4: You hope he's gonna have the year two jump. You
- 58:58Speaker 4: hope he's gonna come back next year. He'll be healthy,
- 59:00Speaker 4: he'll be improved.
- 59:01Speaker 3: All of that.
- 59:01Speaker 4: Now, that doesn't help I mean, it's Denver, and it
- 59:04Speaker 4: doesn't help them if they make the super Bowl and
- 59:05Speaker 4: they're gonna have to continue to manage that. His knee
- 59:07Speaker 4: is probably not gonna get if it's if he's not
- 59:09Speaker 4: one hundred percent now, he's probably not gonna be a
- 59:10Speaker 4: hundred percent by Sunday.
- 59:12Speaker 3: But there is a long term picture here too.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing with him technically that I
- 59:17Speaker 1: would like to see him improve on is his anchor,
- 59:20Speaker 1: if he can.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Sit back a little bit more.
- 59:22Speaker 1: I know a lot of people want him to bring
- 59:24Speaker 1: the fight to them because of the arm length and
- 59:26Speaker 1: maybe be a little bit more aggressive. But I think
- 59:28Speaker 1: what happens when you know what Dad is is that
- 59:32Speaker 1: when he gets so aggressive, like he's gonna overseet when
- 59:35Speaker 1: he gets aggressive like that, and then he's gonna end
- 59:37Speaker 1: up having more blowbys. I think i'd rather him die
- 59:40Speaker 1: slowly then then go if you try to go out
- 59:43Speaker 1: and get guys, especially well schooled rushers like Anderson, like
- 59:46Speaker 1: they're just gonna swim here, They're just gonna spin inside
- 59:49Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 59:49Speaker 4: And you're gonna go and that, And that's where you know,
- 59:52Speaker 4: the big concern is with me for him now, I
- 59:54Speaker 4: know talking to David and I just keep citing him
- 59:56Speaker 4: because obviously knows much more.
- 59:58Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 59:59Speaker 4: Yeah, he mentioned that he thought he saw some instances
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: where Campbell was maybe trying to do too much and
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: you know, trying to do like like fake jab.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: In his hands and this and that and like independent
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: hands stuf.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: You just don't want it to get in his head.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: And there was that moment he was on the tunne
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: where Rabel gives him like the chin up. I think
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: that's important, right, just you know you don't want it.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: You don't want the issue compounding, like, hey, you had
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: a rough week, two rough weeks. That's life in the NFL.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: Like you got to get back out there and be
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: better and not let it get to you. Like that's
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: my big concern with him right now.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Last thing, and we have to take a break on this.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: I'm sure we can talk about this some more.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Yeah, after the break, Sure we have calls about it.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I think the number one thing that I just look at,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: like I was saying, if he can improve his anchor
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: to the point where he can really rely on it,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: then he can kind of like win the second phase a.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Little bit more, which is what he's done. He didn't
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: can't we still do that?
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: So like he might not ever be able to get
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: his hands on the guy first.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Like that might just be especially against some of these
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: longer guys, you know, away with the Chargers gave him
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: some problems because of his length, Anderson I thought gave
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: him some problems because of his length. These longer guys
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: that are just gonna have the you can't grow his arms, right,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: So the longer guy might he's only twenty one, maybe
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: the guys that have that reach advantage that he has.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: If I, if I was, you know, I would hope
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: that maybe with some more you know, technique work, with
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: some more NFL weight room work, like all that good stuff,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: if you can win the second phase where Okay, I'm
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: gonna kind of concede that you're gonna get your hands
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: on me, but then I'm gonna be able to have
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: you know, like, can we develop like a snatch move
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: where the guy gets his hands on him and then
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: he just punches his hands off of him and kind
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of just ends the rep. Can you develop a more
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: sturdy anchor so that you can just kind of sit
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: back and just absorb the contact instead of having to
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: be so aggressive with the set. I think those are
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: the types of things that he will sort of start
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: to work on and learn as we move forward here.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: And I think he can still be a really good
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: NFL left tackle.
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: I really do.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Maybe it won't be He's not going to be Joe Thomas.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: He's not going to be Jonathan Ogden, he's not going
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: to be Orlando Pace, Like, he's not going to be
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer. But can he be a Mallie
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Mattlite Nate Solder?
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Yeah? I think so.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: All right, let's take a quick break and we'll come

- 1:04:31Speaker 1: something we got. It does sound like yeah on Sunday.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: It sounds like this weekend we might get some more snow.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: So the next big snowstorm is not just around the corner.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: It's maybe in like three days. So if you need

- 1:05:03Speaker 1: you need a snowblower. Today it's freezing. It's like twenty
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: degrees out. Maybe it's on Saturday, it's gonna be in
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: the single digit's getting snow in.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: The area as well.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: But it's not supposed to be that bad in Denver.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I think we're gonna be in like that, just be
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: like high forties and sunny. No, it's it's it's gonna
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: be in like the mid to high thirties. It was
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: that at one point, though I think that moved to
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: like Saturday or Monday or whatever. But yeah, it's it's
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: not gonna be too bad. All right, Let's get to
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: the emails, Let's get to some of the calls, and
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: then we're going to talk about the Denver Broncos.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Patty is an aguam. What's up, Patty?
- 1:05:37Speaker 13: Yeah, we'll wait a little bit.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: Hey, what's up? Hey? How were doing?
- 1:05:42Speaker 13: Not too dead? It's just a few things, Alex. I
- 1:05:46Speaker 13: don't know if you remember me. Call them the Sunday
- 1:05:47Speaker 13: morning kickoff show. But I predicted the score at twenty
- 1:05:50Speaker 13: seven to sixteen, So nailed it. There you go. You guys,
- 1:05:56Speaker 13: do you see this being more of an the ball
- 1:06:00Speaker 13: Remondre Stevenston type of game with that big jumbo personnel
- 1:06:04Speaker 13: and kind of pick and choose where you want to
- 1:06:05Speaker 13: take your deep shots or do you envision Drake coming
- 1:06:10Speaker 13: out throwing because I think it's going to be tough
- 1:06:13Speaker 13: with the crowd is getting the snap counts, and I
- 1:06:16Speaker 13: just and and you know, with the whole offensive line
- 1:06:20Speaker 13: having a pass block with that crazy ass crowd. So personally,
- 1:06:24Speaker 13: I think this should be a big Remondre Stevenson game.
- 1:06:27Speaker 13: Where do you guys stand, I'll take it off there.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Guys, Thanks Patty.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: So I'm very interested, and I'm not doing the whole
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Denver thing, so don't don't get crazy. I'm very interested
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in the crowd in Denver because history would obviously tell
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: you that it's going to be loud. Yeah, they've played
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: an AFC Championship game there. I mean, everybody goes back
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: to twenty fifteen when you know they were couldn't block
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: the edges and it was fallse starts and it was
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: bad silent count and it was a mess. But you
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: just lost your starting quarterback.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Like so how like you know, like that. I feel
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: like that could be a very nervous kind of crowd.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Like I think there's an element of like, we need
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: to help. They're playing with house money.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: I don't think that let's go nuts, let's go wild, like,
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: because I don't.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Think they feel that way if they if they even
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: have it, I don't know a little bit of I
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: would if it was me in that crowd, right, there's
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: a little bit of nervousness, But it's like, you know,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: I think I think once the game kicks off, it's
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: like why not us?
- 1:07:26Speaker 9: Right? Why?
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: And if they get a little bit of momentum early on,
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: it's like, oh, this could actually happen. This would be unbelievable.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I guess my cult thing is like I feel like
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: if you're a broncos Man, I feel like we would
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: feel the same way if Drake May got hurt in
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: the same fashion, it's over, season's over, that you're not
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: gonna win a game.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Yeah, but if we went out there on Sunday and
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: let's say Josh Dobbs starts the game with like twenty
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: yard in cut over the mind, it would.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: Be like, oh yeah, Okay, here we go. I guess
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: maybe that's what I'm saying, Like.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: Maybe I could feel that all right. In terms of
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Patty's question, I absolutely think this is a run game.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I absolutely think that this is a heavy run game.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: I don't wanted like, what's the word temp fate, I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: don't want to like going it fly too close to
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the sun. Is a very good Denver Broncos pass defense,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: very very good, and the metrics are extremely gaudy. I
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: know that some people have brought up the fact that
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: they haven't been quite as good down in the stretch.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: They haven't been quite as good against like good offenses
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: versus bat that's all every defense, Like every defense cleans
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: up on the bad teams that they play.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and isn't as good against.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: The good quarterbacks shocker, Like I know, like they weren't
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: as good against Josh Allen as they were against the
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Chiefs third string quarterback on that game and a couple
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: of weeks ago, right, Like, that's that's for the every
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: single team. But I watched them on film and I
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: said it earlier. They're past defense in particular, they are
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: a chaotic unit. This is not a team like the
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Texans that kind of just sit in their coverages and
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: don't draw blitzes and don't know they're sending guys from
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: all over the place. Their coverages are extremely exotic. Some
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: of them are manned, some of them are match zones.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: They don't really spot drop zone very often. They bring
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: pressure from all different places. You know, they're blitzing guys,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: they're dropping guys like this is one of those kinds
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: of defense. Is it's a lot more in that respect,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I'd say like the Chargers scheme than it is like
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: the Texans defense. So for that reason, you know, just
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: looking at some of their film and looking at some
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: of their recent games, the Bills especially were able to
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: just kind of line up and run it down their throats. Now,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: the Bills have a great run game, they have a
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: great offensive line, but the Patriots have found a run
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: game recently and have been able to move some people
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: in the run game. The one thing that I look
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: at with is Broncos defense. They're a little undersized up front.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: They're a little undersized. Their biggest defensive tackles DJ Jones.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: He's three to zero five.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: He doesn't play a lot right.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: He's more of like their rotational run stuffer.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: Yeah on first down.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Now they get off the ball and they fly up
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the field and they can make plays on the other
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: side of the line of scrimmage, which is why I
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: think a lot of their run metrics are really good,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: because they make a lot of stuffs in TFLs and
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: things like that.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: But I do think that you can run the ball
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: on them.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: And then the Bills were able to run it on
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: them a little bit, and their play action passing game
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: was extremely effective.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Off the run game. They moved the pocket a couple
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: of times with Josh Allen effectively in that game.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: So I look at this game as one of those
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: games where I absolutely would expect the Patriots to go heavy.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised if they open up in like
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: twenty two with the sixth offensive linemen out there and they.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Try to rail it right down there.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: Three that if they're small up front, Bullium, yeah, Bully Morgan, Moses,
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: and yeah damn to stop it.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Very different schematically, very different, but just from a holistic standpoint,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: it kind of reminds me of like how you want
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: to play the Bills, where like this is an elite
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: pass defense, but they're a little bit smaller, they're a
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: little bit more finesse, like guys on the edge, like
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Bonito is really built to rush the pass or he's
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: like five Like, So, would you rather try to dance
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: with those guys or would you rather try to run
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: those guys on it down their throats?
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: That's how I feel about it. We can get to
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: more of that in a second. Two h Brad is
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: in Ohio. What's up, Brad?
- 1:11:15Speaker 10: Good morning guys?
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: How you doing morning?
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:11:19Speaker 10: Just wanted to a couple of observations and questions there. Uh,
- 1:11:24Speaker 10: first of all, on on defense, do you think that
- 1:11:29Speaker 10: the tight end for Denver will be the most appropriate
- 1:11:33Speaker 10: response to their wide receiver problem they're having on their
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: on their side and they're gonna and take away the
- 1:11:41Speaker 10: run game and the tied end. I hope it would
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: be our defensive philosophy. And then the cornerback who would
- 1:11:49Speaker 10: replace David would what's his best trait?
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Do you know that?
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:11:55Speaker 10: Is it done?
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: Is it?
- 1:11:57Speaker 10: Man? And if if he has to be the one
- 1:12:00Speaker 10: to take the tours there, what could Zack Corr do
- 1:12:06Speaker 10: to counteract that, like roll coverage or safety that way?
- 1:12:10Speaker 10: What do you guys think? And in regards to any
- 1:12:13Speaker 10: you know, inadequate sieves he might have given. Carl Davis
- 1:12:17Speaker 10: might not play.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Brad, thanks to the call.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: So I don't want to jump the gun on Carlton
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Davis because we'll find out, you know, late this afternoon,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: maybe even when Rabel talks.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: Also, I don't know what to be Charles Woods or
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: to be Alex Austin.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Charles Woods.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Charles Woods, I think is elevated to that spot
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: as the fourth corner. But I saw Carlon Davis after
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: the game. He seemed like he was in pretty good spirits.
- 1:12:40Speaker 11: You know.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: I think they've really gotten pretty strict with these concussions.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: You know, Trevion Henderson was put in the protocol in
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Baltimore and cleared in a week. Christian Gonzales was put
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: in the protocol against the Chargers and cleared in a week.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: So I'm not ready to say that Carlton Davis isn't
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: going to be available on Sunday. I don't know that
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: for a fact. To his first question, you know, I
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: think that's you know, Wilking at the Broncos defense or offense.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: Excuse me, this is one of the you know, the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: bigger kind of questions that I have about this Stidham
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: thing with bow Knicks. They throw the ball a lot.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: You know, they are a past centric offense, and I
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: kind of think that John Payton always has been. Now
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: he had Drew Brees, so like that obviously influences that
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: a lot. But for the most part, I don't when
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I think of Sean Payton, I don't think of like
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: a guy that wants to play smash math football and
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: run the football.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Now they might be getting JK.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Dobbins back, which could change that a little bit, but
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: they're sixteenth in EPA per rush, their top ten in
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: pretty much every sort of like pass metric in terms
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: of past rate, you know, overall pass rate dropbacks per game.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure bo Knicks was tied for second in
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: past attempts. I think it was like him and Caleb Williams,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: and I forget who was number one, but it might
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: you know, he was up there in terms of past attempts.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: So this is they were fourth in total in past
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: attempts this yere. Yeah, this has not been a run
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: game offense. And my whole thing is is like when
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: you have a backup quarterback playing in the AFC Championship
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: game with no prep time. Basically, I don't think dropping
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: him back fifty times like you did with Bo Nicks
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: on Sunday again or Saturday against Buffalo is the answer. Like,
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: that's not I don't think you're gonna win that way.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: So can Denver find a running game?
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: Does JK. Dobbins come back and sort of fix that?
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I think is a huge key to this game because
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the Patriots have been fantastic and stopping the run.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Dobbin's gonna be an interesting one. He was having
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: a really good year. He was he was having a
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: really good year before he got hurt. He was kind
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: of the driving force in that offense. And Liz Frank,
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Liz Franks havery pronounce it right, Liz Frank that that
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: injury is no joke. No, that that's a nasty injury.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: And so it was supposed to be season ending. Now
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: he's back, but like, where's he gonna be? How well
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: is he gonna cut?
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be interested to see how he looks, because
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: if he looks good, it does really open the door
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: for them to kind of the offense through him.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, if he's not. R. J.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: Harvey is not bad, but I don't know that he's
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: a guy you want to give the ball to twenty
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: five times in championship game.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: So he's also and yeah, and he's more of like
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: a scat back pass game right anyways.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Well but he's been their their lead back, hurt m choice.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: So what I'm saying if you're if you're.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: Trying to take the ball out of Stidham's hands and
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: Dobbins isn't a hundred percent it's it's Archie Harvey unless
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: you feel really good about your Louiam McLoughlin.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean this is my point, Like, right, what
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: I'm trying to what I'm trying to do with this game,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: and we just let's just do it the kind of
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: tea up the Broncos here.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: What I'm trying to do with this game is find
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: a path for Denver to win the game.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Wistedham, you know that's what and in that, but that's
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: like low hanging fruit, like if they if they turn
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the Patriots turned the ball over four times, then yeah, Denver.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Could win the game.
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: But that that's the path.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: But there has to be Like my.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Point is is like is there any other pass right?
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: And the easiest thing to say, and I think here's.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: The thing Storry to cut you off.
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: But even if it was Bonix, I say this with
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: no disrespect to bon Knicks, and I says no disrespect
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: to Jared's Didham. But the reality of the situation is
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: the Broncos have been and we're always going to be
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: a team carried by their defense.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: That's just the way it's built. That's the way they've
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: won all year.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: I know Bonnicks has made some plays late in games
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: that have elevated them, and it's not saying he's done nothing,
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: but these are late in close, low scoring games because
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: the defense is dominated.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: The jareds Didham thing obviously makes it.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: It's a factor. It's an impact, especially those gotta have it.
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: I think the individual plays. The overall big picture of it, though,
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: is the Broncos defense. The Patriots not letting the Broncos
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: defense dominate the game. I would be saying that if
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: Bonix was starting.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think it's I hear what you're saying.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: The obvious thing for the Broncos here is can they
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: get to a point where Jared's Didam can manage this game?
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: Hit the layups that Sean Payton's schemes open, don't turn
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: the over, and let your defense.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Win the game, right like that? That's yeah, that's the
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: blueprint for Denver. We all can see that.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: I said this to you last week. Could Houston? My
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: take going into that game was, could Houston get to
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: twenty one without turnovers?
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: And they couldn't even get to twenty one with a
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: ton turnovers?
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: Right?
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Can Denver get to seventeen without turnovers?
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: No?
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: And I think that the thing that I'm trying to
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: get at, I guess is like I would feel more
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: confident in trying to hype up Denver a little bit
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: here in this game if they had a run game.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: But that's OK, that's really not who they are, Like
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: they could try to be that well who they were
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: at one point. I don't think they ever really were
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: that Early in.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: The they Dobbins, they were really good run team and
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: they had pretty high volumes in the first ten weeks
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: of the year.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I don't know, I mean, that's just not the way
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: I feel like they're structured. It just hasn't been.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Like Dobbins is a fine player, but like it's not
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: like they in order to win the game that with
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: the backup quarterback like that, like you need to have
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: you need to really be able to run the ball
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: like thirty five times in this game on Saturday Sunday.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: And I don't think they're going to be able to
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: do that because they're going to be in second and
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: long too often because the Patriots are going to stop it.
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: So so I agree with you that I don't think
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: they can. My question to you is do you think
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: they'll try it anyway?
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I don't know what other choice they have really, but
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: I guess, like I'm just saying that, I that's just
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: not how I vision.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Like, look at this offense.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: So over the first ten weeks, this is I think
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: Dobbins played through week ten, right, I correct me if
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: I'm wrong.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he did. He played through week ten.
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: Over the first ten weeks of the season, the Broncos
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: ran for four point eight yards per carry. It was
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: eighth in the NFL. They had the eighth most carries
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: in the NFL two seventy.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but they have been possessed the ball a ton.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I'll just all right, like this is this is not
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: who they are, Like they did in this last game
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: against Buffalo, and I like if we all think that
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: they're just gonna all of a sudden become like the
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Bills of the.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Ravens or something like that because of JK. Dobbins. I
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: just think that you're you're selling yourself a bridge, Like
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: this isn't who they are when you have.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: Your backup quarterback starting AFC Championship game.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: They ran the ball twelve times last week with bis No,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: they ran it twelve times as traditionally as a team.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: He dropped back fifty Like this just isn't Like I
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: don't think that they're just not built this way. Like
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: and if like you think like JK. Dobbins not Derrick Henry,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: like he's not going to come back and all of
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: a sudden make them a prolific rushing off.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Sorry, I know he's not.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: Isn't that what they kind of have to count on
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: to happen to win the game?
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: Though, Yeah, I guess. But like I'm just trying to
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: like this is what I'm trying to tell you, Like
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: I just don't really know. I know, I just don't
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: see it, Like I just you're talking.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: About what you think is going to happen. This is
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: where we have. You're talking about what you thinks.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Like I think that looking deep into JK.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: Dobbins coming back and then all of a sudden morphing
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: into this like beast of a run team is just unreal.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: But as you said, the other not a beast of
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: a run team, but just in terms of what they're
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: going to do, what they're actually going to do.
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: Would you rather give the ball to JK.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: Dobbins twenty five times coming off the list Frank injury
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: twenty five thirty times, or put the ball in Jared
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: Stidham's hands. What do you think Sean Payton is going
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: to do? Whether or not it will work. They don't
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: have a good option, all right? Now, this is the
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: point I understand.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: But like all this stuff is a domino effect, right
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: because like if you try to come out and run
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the ball, you know, sixteen seventeen times on first down,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: you can.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: Only keep doing it if you're if it's working right
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Because like event.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: So, you think that this is going to end up
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: a game where Jared Citty maybe throws a ball thirty
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: five to forty times, Yes, I.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: Think because it just it inevitably is going to get there,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: all right, I mean weair enough. I don't This is
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: like not the bigger point that I was trying to make,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: but I think the point that I really am trying
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: to make about this Nixon Stidham thing.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: I'm not the biggest Nicks guy, you know that.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: But one thing that Nicks is really really good at
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: is a he's a pretty good athlete, and he's pretty
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: good at throwing the ball on the move, whether that's
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: off design or that's him just jitterbugging around.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: And throw the ball off play.
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: And that is a huge, huge part of their offense.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: They are number two in the league and rollout rate,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: designed rollout rate, you know, bootlegs, things like that, And
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: it's not just bootlegs, like they also move the pocket
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: in different ways off motions and spinners, and they just
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: move the pocket a lot. Okay, then they also have
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: like his play extension and his like I swear to god,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: that guy never sits still. He's like a quarterback with
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: ADHD Like he's just always moving around. And now you're
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: going to go into a game with Stidham where it's
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: going to be a completely different look.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: Like Stidham is not a statue, but he's not.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: That's not His playing style is to be bouncing around
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: and stuff like that back there like bon Nicks so
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: second in the league, and bootlegs are design rollouts. He's
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: also first in the league and throws on the run
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: like him on the run throwing the football. He throws
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: the ball on the run more than any other quarterback
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: in the NFL. So, like that whole thing is I
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: feel like it's just going to be completely gone from
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: this game. So this is now going to become a
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: much more traditional drop back, hand the ball off kind
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: of game where everything is going to be kind of
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: happening in the middle of the field. And I think
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: for the Broncos is I'm trying to like come up
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: with ways other than the Patriots turning the ball over
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: five times, which is true for any game any week
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: in any season. I look at this and I'm just like,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I don't know how you beat the Patriots defense away
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: they're playing right now in like a traditional kind of way.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: I feel like that is probably not going to go
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: with you.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: And so I'm really curious to see how they call
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: the game for Jared'stidham. I think that interests me more
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: than anything else about this whole thing. It's actually kind
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: of stressing me out a little bit because there's nothing
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: to go off of, which I think is a little
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: bit stressful, Like there's no tape, there's no.
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: Tub, But you just said they're gonna have to be
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: pretty vanilla about it.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: So I went back and watched some of the preseason
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: just did him, And I know everybody's gonna laugh and
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: be like, that's preseason, that's crazy. But it's base plays, right,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Like what is like their fundamental core base plays that
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: they run all the time. That's the stuff that you run.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: In training camp in the preseason.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: That's the only thing that that Jared Sendham knows like
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: he's not getting first team reps in practice with an
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: install and a game plan during the regular season or
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: the or the divisional round because he's not the starting quarterback.
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: So the only is a young guy.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: So even more than an average I would say him
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: not because you sometimes the backups will.
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: Get very with the young guy. It's usually not the case.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Sean Sean Payton said that he got next to none.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Okay, So.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: There's just like that. That was the first place I started.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: I also went back in twenty twenty three, started two
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: games for Denver Wish Sean Payton. Now it's a completely
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: different Denver roster. They were not good yet like it
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: was it was came. So there's a couple guys that
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: are still here.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: But you know, Bowles is still here obviously, I think
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: you know a couple guys like that. But it's it's
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: not a lot.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: And you know, I expect the Patriots to be preparing
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: for sort of their base system, you know, what is
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: their regular base system. But the problem is is at
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: their recent tape with Bo Nicks, he kind of like
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: throws out the conventional stuff a lot and ran it
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: just starts to run around back there, and so it's
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: just very difficult.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: In my opinion, I.
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: Almost feel like, and I know this isn't exactly how
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: it works, but you almost have to look at tendencies
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: more than you look at I don't know the film.
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out the right way to phrase this.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: Like when he thrown to his left, first throw to
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: his right. Okay, when you get this route concept, which
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: route does he hit the most? Does he like to
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: test this window or this window if he's getting pressured
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: from his left, if he's getting pressured from his right,
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: Like I think you just have to look at his
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: tendencies more than the offense as a whole, and obviously
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: that leaves you bare. And again, I know that's not
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: exactly how works, because you have to look at it
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: in the context of the offense. But for me, it's
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: like tendency, Like that's just how he's wired. You have
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: to look at how he's wired and how he sees
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: the field. And maybe you go back to Vegas and
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: look at some of that, because he started a couple
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: of games in Vegas too, and I know that's in
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: a different offense, but you know, okay, there's a.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: Little bit of a him.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Sean Payton's a Bill Parcell's guy. Like there's a tiny
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: little bit of overlap there with Peyton and with McDaniels.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: It's really as somebody that you know does these game
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: previews every week and I put it, you know, a
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: game plan together, all this film cut ups and all
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: that kind of stuff to have like nothing to go
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: off of. I can only imagine how that kind of
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: feels for the coaching staff right now, because like, who
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: gives a shit about.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: Me in the defensive meetings this week?
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Like the coaching staff like is I'm sure just kind
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: of like all you got to look at.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: I think all you can really do is what are
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: like the core philosophies of a Sean Payton offense? Yeah,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: because that's they're gonna They're not gonna try to reinvent
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: the wheel.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: They can't.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: They don't have another time.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: So they're gonna look at.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: It and say, what are the what are the core
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: sort of tenants, staple concepts, route combinations like all that
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: kind of stuff that Sean Payton is known for and
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: runs a yearly basis, regardless of quarterback.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: And that's kind of all you have to go off of, right,
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: and you kind of hope that works, you know.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: The other couple of things I wanted to mention on
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: on the offense for Denver, this is the best offensive
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: line the Patriots have faced in the playoffs.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: Is the best offensive line in the league.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: It's one of the best.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: It's definitely the best that they've faced in the playoffs
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: by a country mile. Yeah, I guess it depends on
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: what happens at center.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: You know, they if their starting centers back.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: They have two first team All Pros on the offensive
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: line with Bulls and their right guard Miners.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Is really good too.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I think that this is I'm really interested to see
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: if all this domination the Patriots have had on the
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: defense of line, like, is this for real?
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: I think we're going to find out.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: Was this a product of two of the worst offensive
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: lines in football with the Texans and the Chargers. I
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: think that might be thirty one and thirty two if
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I had to rate the offensive lines in the NFL
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: that they played in the first two rounds. Now they're
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: going to play an offensive line that's easily top three
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: to five. You know, I think the only lines that
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: give it a run for its money in terms of
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: the teams of Patriots that played are Buffalo and Pittsburgh,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: both really good offensive lines too. So either way, you know,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: can they still get pressure against a good offensive line?
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: Can they still stop the run against a good offensive line?
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: That's going to be a big question mark. And if
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: they can and they dominate a game again up front,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: then it does for me at least change you know,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: obviously I assume they win that game. If they're dominating
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: like that upfront, it does change a little bit or
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: get me a little bit more confidence going into the
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: Super Bowl against the Rams or the Seahawks, because that
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: tells you that that's real, that's say, that's a real
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: tangible thing now that this team can do is you know,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: dominate the line of scrimmage defensively.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: So you know, that's the way.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: You know, we talked about, you know, the run game
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: a lot for Denver, Like that's their path, right is
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Stidham's has a picnic back there all game. Like even
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: though I don't think very much of Jared's Didham, I
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: do think he's got arm talent and I do think that,
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: like any NFL quarterback for the most part, if you
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: keep a guy, you know, you keep the jersey clean.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: And he's got no you know, he's got no pressure
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: on him, Like I'm sure he can make sit back
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: there and play seven on seven.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: All day long, right Like that's all these guys.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: And then of course the run game, you know, can
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: this offensive line you know, kind of spearhead with JK.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: Dobbins maybe coming back a productive run game out of
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: it like that? That to me, if I'm Denver has
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: to be it like that. It has to be our
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: best attribute right now because also, let's not forget Troy
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: Franklin and Pat Bryant might not playing this game either.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: Their best attribute has to be their offensive line and
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: just kind of helping that unit can dominate the Patriots.
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and to your point before about okay, it was
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: their dominance the last couple of weeks. The Patriots dominance
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: more a product of a you know, facing week banged
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: up offensive lines or what they were doing. I mean,
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: I think it's probably some of both. They they had
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: what thirty something pressures against the Chargers.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: I think they have seventy two total in the last
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: two games. Are they going to do that?
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: No, I doubt it.
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: But can they be effective and make their presence felt? Yeah,
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: and it was against weaker teams before, But we've seen this.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: We see this all the time, Like sometimes that's just
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: what it takes to get the ball rolling. And when
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: you face a tougher team, it's going to get tougher.
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: But you have this momentum now, you have things going
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: the right way, that you're going to play better than
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: you would otherwise. I guess the point I'm trying to
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: make is if they had had to play the Broncos first,
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: I don't know that I'd be as optimistic in their
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: rush as I am now because they've had these two
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: games to kind of work things out and figure out
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: what they want to be. I would also blitz a
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: lot and really pressure that offensive line and send more
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: bodies than they can handle and force tight ends and
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: running backs to block.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was, you know, the.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: Last thing I kind of had written down here on
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: the offensive side of the ball for the Broncos defense
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: for the Patriots was just, you know, don't don't change
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: the mac and cheese right like this, this is clearly
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: working what you're doing in terms of some of the
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: stuff that they've been mixing up on defense. Don't get
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: into this game and be like, oh, it's it's only
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: Jared Sidham, right like, don't do that whole thing. Treat
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: it like it like it's the starting quarterback. Come after him.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: Do the same mix of blitzing forty percent blitz rate.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I'm all for in this game. The other thing that
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: I would just mention, and I know this is kind
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: of a little bit contradictory to what I just said,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: but just.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Like rule of thumb.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: Like Wise, normally, when you face a quarterback who hasn't
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: seen a live defense in two years, like you usually
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: want to play zone against those kinds of guys.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Because man to to man coverage.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: Is actually pretty simple to read for a quarterback, Like
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: you just find the one on one matchup right, and
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: then it becomes receiver separation, contested catch ability, ball placement,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: like it becomes that kind of game. It's it's you know,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: to go back to the other and it's seven on
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: seven at that point right right, Like it's just we're
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: gonna find the open man. We're gonna go one, two, three,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: find the open man, We're gonna put it on them
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: and hope a guy can make the catch in traffic
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: Like that, that's what man coverage becomes. Zone coverage is
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: much more of a thinking man's game. Now you need
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: to read out this coverage shell. You need to find
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: the soft spots. The receiver needs to be on the
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: same page as the quarterback. And then I also think
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: the biggest thing about zone there's eyes on the quarterback.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: So if he's gonna throw you a couple, you're gonna
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: see him come in your way and you're gonna be
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: able to pick him off. So all this stuff that
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: we've seen them do throughout the course of the season,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: but especially in the playoffs, like all this like spin
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: the dial, the sky zone stuff that they've done.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: Like that to me is the game plan, Like.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: We are just going to absolutely put this guy in
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: a blender, Like we're gonna spin it. We're gonna spin
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: pressure up front, We're gonna spin the dial in the
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: back end. We're gonna be in different zone structures all long.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: He's not going to know what zone we're sitting in.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: We're going to change it up pre snap, post snap.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: And not only again, like does he not have a
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: ton of experience reading that out in an NFL game?
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: He hasn't worked with any of these receivers really.
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: Well exact You mentioned that that Troy Franklin and Pat
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: Bryant might be out, so he might actually be with
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: some of the second and third team receivers.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: That's true that that that that could be a factor,
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, like how many
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: passes has he thrown to Courtland's side? Right again, No,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: you're right, So like if you're trying to get them
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: to be on the same page and understand the voids
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: and understand the soft spots, that to me is a
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: lot harder to do.
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: Force him into, like timing routes yeah, in that kind right.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: Like finding just under being on the same page. You know,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna sit here, I'm going to break there, you know,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: whatever the case may be. Moving over to the defense
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: a little bit more for the Broncos Patriots offense, a
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: couple of matchup things. I think we you know, I
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: don't want to bog down too much with like all
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: the schematics of the Broncos defense, although Vans Joseph's doing
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: a really good job with that.
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: Having the time of his life.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Obviously, we know that Nick Bond, you know, excuse me,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: it's gonna come off Will Campbell's edge. So I think
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: that the one advantage about this game. Bonito's not a
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: long limbed.
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: Drink drink something.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Just relax. He's not a long limbed He's not a
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: long limbed dude. Right. He is a two d and
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: forty pounds speed rusher. Yeah.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a little undersized. You know, Campbell had some
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: problems with her big early on in the season. Is
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: kind of a similar build. But I would much rather
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: Will Campbell in that kind of matchup than in like
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: a a matchup with like a cyborg like Will Anderson. Right,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: So you know he really has like two moves. He's
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: gonna win with speed around the edge, and he's gonna
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: win with like speed to power. He's gonna convert it
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: into power. I at least feel cautiously optimistic that if
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: I had to pick like the type of edge rusher
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: that I'd want Will Campbell to go against in that
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: category of like elite guys like this is probably more
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: of the skill set that I'd rather him face than
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: what he would faced with like Away or with Willie Anderson.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and again it's just it's it's a guy that.
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: Will Campbell should be able to handle if he's not
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: two in his own head about it. And that's where
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: I'm kind of at with him, is just I think
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: this is a matchup he can win, but he can't
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: try to do too much. Because the thing is, if
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: you the big thing about a guy like Benito, like
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: blocking him, you can't have wasted movements.
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: He's too fast.
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: If you're trying to fake him or this or that,
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: or he's just gonna get by you, just got to
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: you gotta just get to your spot, get to your
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: spot and make him go through you.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, because he's not gonna like I watched you know,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: a bunch of his rushes, and I talked to Brandon Thorne,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: who's like an expert. Yeah, way smarter on this stuff
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: than I am. It's two moves. It's he's got an
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: elite elite speed rush, you know. He uses a ghost move,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: you know, to kind of fake the power and then
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: dip underneath the edge. Elite at that maybe the best
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: the league. And then he has a little bit of
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: a bull rush just because of how explosive he is
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: off the ball. But I looked, you know, through like
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: fifty of his pass rushes recently and like to for
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: any sort of like inside counter because that's what gives
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: Will Campbell some issues. Is guys that can swim or
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: jab or you know, give him a little crossover or
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: something like that. I didn't see any really from Benitos,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: so it's kind of like a little bit of like
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: a I want to call him a one trick pony
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: is probably disrespectful, but like he has like two tricks,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: you know, and I kind of like Campbell in that
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: kind of matchup. The other guy that I just circled
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: that I think is important in this game is Zach Allen.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: He was a beast in the middle. I assume that
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: they're gonna line Zach Allen up over Jared Wilson a
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: lot in this game, maybe even a little big air
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Bradberry as well.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: He is a monster.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: He's a big dude more like, not like big in
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: terms of weight, but just like sheer size and length,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: very powerful, a very very good arm over swim rush
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: as well, which can give like smaller guys like Bradbury
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: and Wilson some problems just because they kind of come
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: with power and then he just swims over you. So
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: that's another guy on their front that you know, along
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: with the scheming and stuff like that. You know, those
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: two guys are kind of the centerpieces of their past
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: rucks they have to worry about. So I'm very interested
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: to see how they they handle that, because, yeah, I
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: do think that you can kind of key on Bonito
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, if you chip them things
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: like that, like if he's only gonna win with speed
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: around the outside, like if you start chipping him and
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: stuff like that, then he's got really kind of nothing
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: else to go to, right, you know, So that might
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: help that out.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: But how they handle Zach Allen in the middle is
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: going to be a big part of this game.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you need Garret Bradbury, Mike go and want to
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: step up again.
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: In the secondary, you know a couple of cornerback matchups
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: here to highlight. Obviously we know about Patrick Sartan. That
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: guy's unbelievable hell of a player.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: I looked this up. He on deep targets this year, He's.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Allowed one catch on a throw over twenty yards out
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: of thirteen attempts. He's one for thirteen on deep. So
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: I wouldn't really suggest testing him too much. Uh. Their
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: slot corner McMillan has played really, really well. You had
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: the big pick in the game, controversial pick, I should
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: say it picked it. Uh, he's been really good uh
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: this year as well. So those two guys good. You know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: the McMillan matchups kind of like a strength on strength
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: like digs. You know, probably versus McMillan certain is probably
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: gonna be on the boundary. So if it's Keseh on booty,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: if it's Kyle Williams, no offense. But you're kind of
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: just sacrificing yourself in this game, I.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: Think on that side of the field.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: Uh, Waldo's Riley Moss right like like, where's Riley Moss
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: And you know, let's let's get over the top of
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Riley Moss.
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: Is the matchup Riley Moss. So the Broncos. You want
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: a weak spot in the Broncos defense, Yes, no team
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: has been. No team had more defensive penalties or defensive
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: penalty yards against this year in the Denver Broncos.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: The most penalized defense in football.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: Big part that Riley Moss eight pass interference penalties this
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: year that led the league and by the way, Nick
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: Benito second in off sides. They were the most penalized team,
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: most penalized defensive team overall, but specifically they were called
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: for the most defensive pass interference and the most defensive
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: off sides or neutral zone infractions in the NFL.
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: Now, they were better last week. They only had one,
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: but it was a potentially costing one.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: It was on that drive where the Bills were going
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: to get the game tying field goal at the end
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: of regulation third and one.
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: Benito jumps off sides. I think was that was technically neutral.
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: Zone, but Riley Moss very handsy corner and there's a
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: referee crew that calls it pretty straight down the middle.
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: They're not flag heavy. They're not gonna let him play crew.
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: They're they're about average. But the Patriots have some receivers
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: that are good at drawing PI yep, and Riley Moss
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: is susceptible to it.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: Ley Moss I heard this a long time ago.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: I'm sure it's nothing revolutionary, but you know, somebody said
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: to me, like they one of the receivers on the
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Patriots was like, you know, he's Waldo and I was like,
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: what's happening?
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: And he's like, you.
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: Find specifically, just in general, you.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Find the corner that's Baldough and that's the matchup that
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: we're hunted. You know, that's the guy we're hunting.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: In this match.
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: Antonio Smith, Anthony Smith, Yeah, yeah, this match of Riley
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: Moss's Waldough. Yeah, Like they could target Riley Moss like
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: fifteen times in this game and it wouldn't surprise me.
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: You think they line up digs more outside to try
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: to get him on Moss?
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: They could, Yeah, he's usually you know, uh certain usually
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: plays the boundary and Moss plays the field corner spot, so.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: You know you could do that.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: They they he's given up you know, not a ton
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: like the percentage isn't terrible. I think it's like nine
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: for twenty eight, so it's like thirty five percent on
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: deep targets, but it's better than one.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: For thirteen, right, exactly. You got to go with somebody.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and you mentioned the penalties, which is a good point.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: You know, I think it's twelve overall. Eight dpi's you know,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: he's he's susceptible more than playing football. Yeah, he's subseptible
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: to that. He's cleaned that up a little bit in
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: the back half of the season. It was probably a
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: really big problem early and he's cleaned that up a
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: little bit. Now, you know, a couple more things and
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: then we'll take the last calls and emails. Uh Hufunga
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: just a playmaking safety kind of.
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but he'll come down near the line of scrimmage sometimes.
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: Really is a good tackling defense. I've always been a
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: fan of his plays with an edge. Is not afraid
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: to get dirty. Kind of reminds me a little bit, honestly.
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: He's not dirty of a player, but like all Shire, yeah,
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: like kind of similar, Like you just got to know
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: where he is because he's gonna be flying around.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I mean they've played some really good hybrid safeties, you know,
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: Petrie Derwin James. I think Kufunga is right in that
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: category of guys that play a lot in the box,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: play a lot over the slot, and like some of
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: their more nickel like standard nickel packages. Uh, he's just
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: around the ball a lot and it's kind of like
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: a heat seeking missile out there.
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and then uh, good play.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: There are other safety there. Free safety is is it
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: lock or loki? It's spelled with an E at PJ lock. Yeah,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: I think it's locked.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: So he's a backup, right.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: Well, he's played well. If he's a backup, I don't
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: I don't know, but.
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: I thought they started the season with somebody else he
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: might be.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: He's he's a pretty good safety, pretty rangy in the
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: deep part of the field. He plays free safety for them.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: You know, it's pretty clear like Hufunga is the box guy,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: he's the free guy. You know, he's the guy over
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: the top of the defense. He made some really good plays,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: you know, I saw in film of him, like coming
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: from one side of the field to the other to
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: make plays on the ball.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: He's a ballhawk.
- 1:41:24Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: He can definitely cover a lot of ground back there.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: So if you are going to throw deep and at
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: least move the safety first move for you, try to
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: do it because that guy can come out of nowhere
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: and make plays.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: On the football.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: Brandon Jones, this guy's better.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: I know Brandon Jones a little bit. I think this
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: guy's got a lot of range. He's impressive.
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he only started three games, so he started fifteen
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: last year. He got replaced by.
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: Hufunga.
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: Yeah, and then it was it was him and Jones
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: and now he's back at no. He's he played really
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: good against the Bills.
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, so you know a lot going on
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: with this defense.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: This was watching their defense on film, Alex was like
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: anxiety driven, not because of how good they are, but
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: because it's an absolutely chaotic film to watch, like they're
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: the game against the Jaguars especially. I watched a bulk
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: of that just to kind of get a feel of
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: what Jacksonville did. First of all, Jacksonville PJ. Washington broke
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: two tackles on the outside. It turned like ten yard
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: games into like seventy yard games. And that was a
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: big part of the reason why Jacksonville started to score
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: in that game. Was they they missed a couple of
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: tackles they don't normally miss. But it's just like that's
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: a chaotic offense because Trevor Lawrence is a chaotic guy,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: and then it's a chaotic defense.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: And I was like, I don't even know what some
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: of this is, like, you know, like I'm sitting there.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Watching this back football.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: Yeah, like some of the coverages that Denver's running, and
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't I don't really even know what
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: to call this.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: Like this is you felt like the Chargers players against Yes, again, Yes,
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: it was.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: Just like sometimes they they play combination coverages were one
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: side zoned off and one side's manned. Sometimes they're matching
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: routes where they'd pass off crossers but carry verticals.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: Sometimes they're just in straight man to man like it was.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: It was a lot.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: It was a lot to digest, you know, over my
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: head in some cases, and so it was it was
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: cool though. I was like, man, you know vance Joseph like, yeah,
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: like really kind of cooking it up.
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: Is he getting interviews? I think he kind of should,
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: Like I thought I saw he was interviewing for one
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: or two jobs.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: All right, let's take these last couple of calls and
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: we have a few emails here if you want to
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: get to those as well.
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: John is in Pittsburgh.
- 1:43:37Speaker 10: Was up, John, John, Hey, guys, Hey, great great show.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: By the way. It's it's fun living in Pittsburgh when
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: people still come up to me and ask me if
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: that was a catch by Jesse James go figure. Uh, well,
- 1:43:57Speaker 5: one of the things that you brought up as far
- 1:43:59Speaker 5: as Denver game, and I didn't see it, and I'm
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: wondering if they're going to do this against Denver is
- 1:44:04Speaker 5: a little bit more of a role out. I didn't
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: see that against Houston, and I was kind of surprised
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: by that, and going into Denver, I think you're gonna
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: see with Stinham being pretty much statue asque, I guess
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: probably some jet sweeps to Mims, contested downfield to Sutton
- 1:44:28Speaker 5: and probably using Harvey out of the backfield. And if
- 1:44:32Speaker 5: Dobbins comes back and he plays, well, you're gonna sit
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: your hats on. Appreciate it, guys.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: Thanks Thanks John. Yeah, I think that's a lot of
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: good points.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: I can to see him getting creative in the run game.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: If Mims has to play a lot like he's not
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: really a traditional wide receiver. He's more of like a
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: gadget player on offense. And I would say, he's this
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: guy with this like diverse route tree that's going to
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: go out there and be able to do that. So
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: he's going to run vertical routes and he's going to
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: run what he said and there at Jets, you know
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: that sort of thing screens, that's going to be a
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: big part of what they do if Mims has to
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: play a lot. What was the other thing that he said,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: a statue. Yeah, he's definitely not a statue. I wouldn't
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: call him a statue.
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: No, he's not a mobile as Nicks. But he's not
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: you know, no, you can roll him out. I wouldn't
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: like he's not gonna design runs, by the way, that
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: was what it was.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: He said about the Patriots not running design I'd like mad.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: So they tried it a couple of times against Houston.
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: One of them was a Will Anderson sack. They tried
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: to move the pocket and hit the route, you know,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: the throwback route, you know, back on a bootleg, and
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: it wasn't open. The Texans covered it well, and so
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: he took a sack. Uh, he got the Hooper playoff barely.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: He had to throw it over to guys that were coming,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: you know, dead to rights. And then they tried it again,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: I want to say, going in the other direction, and
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: he took a zero.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: Yard That was the zero yard sack.
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: So I think they tried it like three or four
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: times against the Texans and it didn't work.
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: The tests were over, a lot of people were saying,
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: why aren't they rolling out more? They've been good at
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: this this year, like roll Drake Maham where they have
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: been good at it this year. I think teams are
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: kind of planning for it and sitting on it ready
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: for it. So yeah, that doesn't mean you don't do it,
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: but it's something I think other teams are game planning against.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: I want to say they ran four or five rollouts
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: in the game against the Texans.
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: Only one of them worked. Yeah, and it was the
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: Hooper play that he gained fourteen.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: It was a nice little play, but like if you
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: watch it back, you're like, Okay, well that's not going
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: to work again. But it was kind of He's snuck
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: out behind the pass rusher that went after May and
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: they got he just lofted it over the guy and
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: got it Cooper. It was not a clean play by
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: any means. Mark is in Connecticut. What's up Mark?
- 1:46:43Speaker 9: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Let's go past
- 1:46:46Speaker 9: absolutely Will Campbell. Will Campbell has turned into ay if
- 1:46:50Speaker 9: you want to call it, a turnstile on the left side.
- 1:46:54Speaker 9: And now I know he's going up against the league guys.
- 1:46:56Speaker 9: My comparison of him, which I believe he's going to
- 1:47:00Speaker 9: be his logan Mankins. I think he's going to be
- 1:47:02Speaker 9: a great guard in a tackle when you need him
- 1:47:05Speaker 9: in emergency situation. So I just wanted to get your
- 1:47:07Speaker 9: guy's take on that. And the last thing is Mac Collins.
- 1:47:11Speaker 9: I am super psyched and hope that he's going to
- 1:47:14Speaker 9: play this weekend because this guy is to elite in
- 1:47:18Speaker 9: the blocking, in his just his catch ability. He has
- 1:47:22Speaker 9: like sure hands. And is there anybody in the draft
- 1:47:26Speaker 9: coming up just to get ahead of ourselves that we
- 1:47:29Speaker 9: can replace him with, because I know Mac Collins is
- 1:47:31Speaker 9: getting older and he's on another one more year I
- 1:47:34Speaker 9: think with us.
- 1:47:35Speaker 13: So just wanted to get you guys take on that.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: Let's go Cap, Yeah, thanks for the call.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: Mark is always on the Campbell thing. I think we
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: can just kind of leave it at this. Yeah, I
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: feel like we do this with everybody that like they're
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: automatically going to be a better guard because they are.
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: That's just the way it works. But I just I'm
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: not sold that he would be like that.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: It would solve a ton of issues because the biggest
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: thing that Campbell has an issue with is that he's narrow,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: Like He's literally just narrow like.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: He's narrow, and he's short arms.
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: He's kind of like, you know, offensive line guys call
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: it sowd off, right, He's got a sowd off frame,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: and so when you have this that frame, like he
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: doesn't take up a whole lot of space, so when
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: you're trying to like build a surface, like I just
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: when I watch if the way that he sets, I
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: just would worry at guard that guys would just get
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: underneath him and just push him back into the pocket.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: And so I feel like developing him at tackle, he
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: just looks like the way he moves, I guess is
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: what I'm trying to get at, the way he moves.
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: Looks more like a tackle than the guard.
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: Yeah, he looks like his natural movements of his body,
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: he just looks more natural playing a little bit higher
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: up and playing a little bit more in space.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: I said it earlier.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: I think he'd be a great run blocking guard, that's
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: no doubt, but I think that in terms of past protection,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: I just don't know if that solves all the problems
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: like a lot of people think it will.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: You would also then a new left tackle, which we've
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: been through this is not easy to find.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: It would be great if he plays well on Sunday,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: because this conversation is gonna be all off season long,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: So Sunday in Denver it should be a good one.
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: It should be exciting. I'm not writing off the Broncos.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to do that.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: I'm not going to take that bait. I do think
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: the Patriots come out and win this game, but I'm
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: not going to write them off completely.
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: So it should be an exciting game. We'll be back
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: next week, win or loose.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: We'll be back next week, hopefully win, and we'll talk
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: about the Broncos game.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: Hopefully we'll talk a little bit about the super Bowl.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: You know, we will have two weeks obviously if they
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: do win on Sunday, so I have plenty of time
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: to talk about the super Bowl at that Hopefully if
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: the Patriots pull it off in Denver, so p you
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: will be up in ten minutes or so.
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: We'll see you guys next week, right.
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: Hey, this is Alex.
