- 0:16Speaker 2: Is Aria Howes with us Politics. Hey Isarion, Hello, Hello.
- 0:20Speaker 2: A lot of talk around town, lot of speculation about
- 0:23Speaker 2: this new Reserve Bank governor.
- 0:24Speaker 3: What do we know? Yeah, I've got a big update
- 0:27Speaker 3: for you. It's understood that an announcement is being made
- 0:30Speaker 3: tomorrow on this. This is a massive deal and it
- 0:32Speaker 3: comes after Adrian Orr resigned in March and Neil quickly
- 0:36Speaker 3: resigned last month. So this topic has been well traversed,
- 0:39Speaker 3: lots of discussion about why some details were seemingly left
- 0:42Speaker 3: out of information releases. Quite a lot as well of
- 0:45Speaker 3: speculation in the background of this one. Christian Hawksby has
- 0:49Speaker 3: been the acting governor of the Reserve Bank during this time,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and financial business company Bloomberg is reporting that a woman
- 0:56Speaker 3: may be appointed to the Central Bank's top role. Now
- 1:00Speaker 3: that would actually be the first time a woman is
- 1:02Speaker 3: appointed to lead New Zealand's central bank. Bloomberg also reporting
- 1:06Speaker 3: there the new governor is not someone from New Zealand.
- 1:09Speaker 3: The heralds Liam dan as Well reports that Bank of
- 1:12Speaker 3: England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden is being tipped as one
- 1:15Speaker 3: of the top women for the job. So yes, it
- 1:18Speaker 3: has understood. An announcement is taking place tomorrow, will be
- 1:21Speaker 3: across all the big updates. It will be a huge
- 1:24Speaker 3: deal and hopefully the end of a rocky period for
- 1:27Speaker 3: the Reserve Bank. So really looking forward to that announcement.
- 1:30Speaker 2: New Zealand First will talk to Shane Jones after five,
- 1:33Speaker 2: but they're invoking the agree to disagree. This is over
- 1:36Speaker 2: the latest immigration policy from the coalition.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it essentially means New Zealand First has drawn a
- 1:42Speaker 3: line in the sand here. So just going into the policy,
- 1:45Speaker 3: the Finance Minister and Immigration Minister have announced changes to
- 1:48Speaker 3: these skilled migrant visa. They're putting in place two new
- 1:52Speaker 3: residence pathways from mid next year. One of them is
- 1:55Speaker 3: in skilled work and another categorized for trades and technicians.
- 1:59Speaker 3: New Zealand First leader Winston Peters well, he's spoken to
- 2:02Speaker 3: media from New York. He's there for the un and
- 2:04Speaker 3: he's essentially calling for the country to get on top
- 2:07Speaker 3: of its skills and try training as a first point
- 2:09Speaker 3: of call. Zild First has that position and we've always
- 2:12Speaker 3: said that we should skill and train our own people first.
- 2:15Speaker 3: N Ze First has said, quote, while we recognize the
- 2:18Speaker 3: importance of retaining some critical workers, we have serious concerns
- 2:22Speaker 3: about what they call an unfocused immigration proposal. Here's Nikola
- 2:26Speaker 3: Willis on.
- 2:27Speaker 4: The thing, and so we don't think that this presents
- 2:30Speaker 4: the risks or dangers that New Zealand First may perceive.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So the Finance and Economic Growth Minister, they're highlighting the disagreement.
- 2:37Speaker 3: She says they've designed the pathway to be really narrow
- 2:40Speaker 3: and she's not too concerned about that agree to disagree clause.
- 2:43Speaker 4: This just reflects stable coalition management, which is from time
- 2:48Speaker 4: to time parties have slightly different perspectives on issues.
- 2:52Speaker 3: So Nikola Willis and the Immigration Minister are both pointing
- 2:55Speaker 3: to the policy is something that will benefit economic growth
- 2:58Speaker 3: and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford has also confirmed that exclusions
- 3:02Speaker 3: will apply. She says the government has been very targeted
- 3:05Speaker 3: and very selected in this.
- 3:07Speaker 5: We will attract migrants to come to New Zealand knowing
- 3:09Speaker 5: that they've got a pathway, but remembering that they can't
- 3:12Speaker 5: come unless they have a job offer that has been
- 3:14Speaker 5: fully tested in New Zealand to make sure there wasn't
- 3:17Speaker 5: a key we available to do the job.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And looking at the bigger picture. Immigration has been a
- 3:21Speaker 3: huge topic for New Zealand First for quite some time.
- 3:24Speaker 3: It was discussed a whole lot at the party's conference
- 3:27Speaker 3: which I was reporting at. It does seem to be
- 3:29Speaker 3: a bit of a point of difference between the parties
- 3:32Speaker 3: and the coalition, so I'm sure there'll be more to
- 3:34Speaker 3: come from this.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, Hey, what do we know? What's the big takeaway
- 3:37Speaker 2: from this sickly annual leave, big pay debarcle thing that's
- 3:42Speaker 2: happened that Van Velden's trying to fix up.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah, so a huge package of reforms to the Wide
- 3:48Speaker 3: Reaching Holidays Act that will be a thing of the past.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It's being repealed and replaced. So some main points from
- 3:54Speaker 3: this one. There's quite a lot to digest here. Sick
- 3:57Speaker 3: leave will be capped at one hundred and sixty hours
- 3:59Speaker 3: and it can be taken in hours rather than full
- 4:02Speaker 3: days at a time, so it means you can sort
- 4:04Speaker 3: of go to the doctor for an hour or so
- 4:06Speaker 3: and not have to take the entire day off work.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Some other big changes part time workers will no longer
- 4:11Speaker 3: have a minimum sick leave entitlement, family violence leave and
- 4:15Speaker 3: bereavement leaver crewele can also start from day one, and
- 4:19Speaker 3: also with this policy, employees will earn annual leave from
- 4:22Speaker 3: day one that's proportionate to their contracted hours. The Minister
- 4:27Speaker 3: Brook van Velden has said that businesses should focus on
- 4:30Speaker 3: their actual business rather than sort of the complex legislation
- 4:33Speaker 3: the rules that are currently in place.
- 4:35Speaker 6: But I've intentionally tried to strike a balance between the
- 4:37Speaker 6: rights and interests of employers and workers. So you'll see
- 4:42Speaker 6: that in some instances workers will benefit and in some
- 4:45Speaker 6: instances employees will benefit.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And worth pointing out with this one, there's a two
- 4:50Speaker 3: year period from when the bill is passed until when
- 4:53Speaker 3: it comes into force, so there is quite a bit
- 4:54Speaker 3: of breathing room in terms of these changes.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Sari appreciate that, Azaria how with politics.
