- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Huskies getting set to take on New Haven on Monday,
- 0:06Speaker 1: the third day of November. That'll be a gamble Pavilion
- 0:09Speaker 1: to seven pm start. Our pregame is a half hour
- 0:13Speaker 1: prior to that at six point thirty as we will
- 0:16Speaker 1: talk to Dan Hurley of course that night and somebody
- 0:19Speaker 1: from the media that covers the Huskies and get a
- 0:22Speaker 1: scouting report on the New Haven Chargers, who are now
- 0:26Speaker 1: Division One. We're joined now by a very familiar face
- 0:29Speaker 1: and voice, Tom Moore, a long time assistant coach with
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Huskies and of course head coach at Quinnipiac for
- 0:36Speaker 1: a decade. Now moving into a different world, a different position,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and I think Tom, the best guy for the job
- 0:45Speaker 1: is you. I would have hired you to do it.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I don't know, but this is so different. I know
- 0:50Speaker 1: it's you know, you've been standing there with a whistle
- 0:54Speaker 1: on awful long time. Now you've got to have a
- 0:56Speaker 1: different perspective altogether on what you can on basketball. Is
- 1:00Speaker 1: up to tell me a little bit about that transition.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Well, thank you for your kind words, Mike, I appreciate that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And hello, Bob. Yeah, it's it's certainly different. It's it's
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's drastically different. And I'm trying my best Mike too,
- 1:18Speaker 2: sort of understand the position and learn as much as
- 1:22Speaker 2: I can while I'm doing it, and also trying to
- 1:25Speaker 2: bring some value to Yukon basketball while I'm doing it,
- 1:30Speaker 2: you know, And and I think Coach Hurley and I
- 1:33Speaker 2: are almost trying to figure out the best way for
- 1:37Speaker 2: me to do it as it's going along. I spend
- 1:41Speaker 2: a lot more time on the administrative side of things
- 1:45Speaker 2: obviously now and again just trying to learn that, embrace it,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and and bring value any way that I can.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, we're in this world now, Tom Moore with us
- 1:57Speaker 1: the Yukon general manager, if that's correct. We're in this
- 2:00Speaker 1: world now where roster building in college is, uh, you know,
- 2:05Speaker 1: three sixty from what you did over all those years
- 2:08Speaker 1: recruiting players, getting them up here on visits, signing them,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you know, getting them on on scholarship and all that stuff.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So your first take on that part of it. How
- 2:21Speaker 1: much the words being used a lot around the country transactional.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Is this whole process now of bringing athletes to college
- 2:30Speaker 1: campuses to play on basketball teams.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I mean it is Mike, obviously, because you're bringing a
- 2:37Speaker 2: financial element into it, and it's it's not quite as
- 2:42Speaker 2: maybe as unsophisticated as it was back in the day
- 2:45Speaker 2: where everybody just had a scholarship value assigned to them.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's it's much more complicated now, and we all think
- 2:53Speaker 2: for the better. I mean, this staff is happy that
- 2:58Speaker 2: our guys of being financial rewarded for their commitment to
- 3:03Speaker 2: the University of Connecticut and how much they do for
- 3:05Speaker 2: this university and how they're sort of the forward facing
- 3:09Speaker 2: group for the university, and so, you know, I think
- 3:15Speaker 2: that's good. I say, we see the benefits to the
- 3:17Speaker 2: kids and the kids' families, and we're trying to be
- 3:21Speaker 2: there for them to educate and guide and be aligned
- 3:27Speaker 2: with them as they as they come into this. It's
- 3:29Speaker 2: a it's a drastically different you know, financial opportunity for
- 3:33Speaker 2: them and their families then than had happened in the past.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And you know this is is different though might then
- 3:40Speaker 2: the than the pro model. Obviously, you know, this is
- 3:42Speaker 2: still head coach driven. Obviously, this is a situation where
- 3:46Speaker 2: we are still recruiting pretty much the exact same way
- 3:51Speaker 2: we did in the past. It's just again I'm maybe
- 3:55Speaker 2: like a conduit between a kid's family and an agent
- 3:59Speaker 2: and an agent now because they have nil agents. But
- 4:03Speaker 2: you know this, we have an incredible recruiting staff, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: obviously with Kamani and Luke and Mike and Coach Hurley
- 4:10Speaker 2: is arguably, i think one of the best head coach
- 4:15Speaker 2: recruiters in the country in terms of how he analyzes players,
- 4:21Speaker 2: evaluates players, and then how he fits them to his roster.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I don't think there's anyone better with both high school
- 4:29Speaker 2: players and players in the portal at finding fits for
- 4:34Speaker 2: the way he wants to play. My role is minuscule
- 4:38Speaker 2: when it comes to this. I'm the guy who is
- 4:41Speaker 2: just sort of on the front lines with communication and
- 4:46Speaker 2: trying to get a sense of the market and trying
- 4:48Speaker 2: to figure out maybe what other schools are offering. But
- 4:53Speaker 2: this staff does an incredible job of doing a lot
- 4:57Speaker 2: of that on their own anyway, So a lot of
- 4:59Speaker 2: times it's them providing me with information.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, along those lines, Tom, how much I'm not being
- 5:05Speaker 1: funny about this, how much BS is going on out there,
- 5:09Speaker 1: how many guys are coming in going well ex university,
- 5:14Speaker 1: whoever they may be, wants to give me six figures
- 5:18Speaker 1: and you guys are not talking that way. I really
- 5:21Speaker 1: wonder how much truth is being told in these conversations
- 5:26Speaker 1: and how much that gets in the way really of
- 5:28Speaker 1: recruiting a guy.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Some of that is true, yeah, Mike, I mean that's
- 5:31Speaker 2: happening in some In some cases, what you have to
- 5:35Speaker 2: do is you have to try to find again families
- 5:40Speaker 2: that you value and agencies that you value. And it's funny, Mike,
- 5:44Speaker 2: usually those families find the right agencies, you know, the
- 5:47Speaker 2: families that are about the right stuff usually align with
- 5:50Speaker 2: the right agencies, and we have good relationships with a
- 5:55Speaker 2: lot of the major agencies. It helps too with the
- 5:59Speaker 2: success that we've had recently obviously, where there are a
- 6:02Speaker 2: lot of agencies that understand the benefit of having one
- 6:05Speaker 2: of their clients come to us, you know, like they
- 6:08Speaker 2: know coach early and the staff is going to get
- 6:10Speaker 2: their guys better and ready for the next level. They
- 6:14Speaker 2: know they're going to be coached really hard. So I
- 6:17Speaker 2: think we get a little more transparency when we're when
- 6:20Speaker 2: we're negotiating, let's say, then maybe some other schools might
- 6:24Speaker 2: I think we get sometimes in some cases a little
- 6:27Speaker 2: bit of a of a discount. Then then other schools
- 6:30Speaker 2: might because of the success and and rightfully so, I
- 6:33Speaker 2: think this is again I'm biased, but I think this
- 6:37Speaker 2: is the best head coach in the country, and I
- 6:38Speaker 2: think this is one of the best staffs in the country.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And if you send your son here, he is going
- 6:46Speaker 2: to be coached hard, he's going to improve, and he
- 6:49Speaker 2: is uh, he's going to get a heck of a
- 6:51Speaker 2: lot better, and he's also going to be toughened up
- 6:54Speaker 2: to as well, and he's going to win a lot.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So I think people see the value in that, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: that obviously helps us when we're when we're haggling, I guess,
- 7:05Speaker 2: for lack of a better.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Word, I believe you're using that word haggling. Are you
- 7:10Speaker 1: playing there? One hundred and twenty third basketball season in
- 7:13Speaker 1: their history? Tom Moore with us the former assistant and
- 7:17Speaker 1: head coach and now general manager. We'll be back with
- 7:20Speaker 1: more of the Yukon men's basketball coaches showing a moment
- 7:23Speaker 1: onlear Field.
