- 0:05A man named Samuel, of modest appearance and tired gaze, spent his days
- 0:10within the city, where the days took on a grey look. He bore
- 0:15with him the scars of a life marked by loneliness. Samuel’ s face
- 0:20reflected the suffering that had marked him. A few years ago he would have
- 0:24lost his wife in a car accident, even though he had not been the
- 0:29culprit, all the people close to her daily blamed him for that misfortune.
- 0:35He never managed to overcome that grief, in addition to the trauma of having
- 0:40to carry and collect his body with forensics. Despite all the loneliness and sadness,
- 0:44he was still standing up to all this on his own. During the
- 0:50years lived, Samuel developed in different trades to be able to bring a bread
- 0:55into his mouth. He never strayed from the road. The job I'
- 0:59ve been doing lately was to be a janitor without any shame. He carried
- 1:03out his work with pride. Accompanied by his mop. Samuel went through several
- 1:08places, schools, offices, restaurants, and lately he was working inside Dr
- 1:15Martínez' s hospital, where he became accustomed to seeing heartbreaking scenes, not
- 1:21only because of the severe patients, but also because of families who came to
- 1:26suffer losses that sometimes reminded him of his deceased wife. His working life led
- 1:33a path with complete normality until one day, when he arrived at the hospital,
- 1:38he was called by Dr Martínez. Samuel imagined that he would probably be
- 1:42fired and would see himself in the need to seek another job. Upon entering
- 1:48his office he was kindly received by the doctor. He told her he was
- 1:53doing a great job. He knew his story and knew that the salary he
- 1:57earned was somewhat poor, or so r offered him a vacancy with a higher
- 2:00salary than he earned in the hospital. Without hesitation, Amuela accepted the offer.
- 2:07He couldn' t hide his emotion until the doctor gave him a little
- 2:12detail about the vacancy. I wouldn' t be a janitor anymore from a
- 2:15hospital, a school, or any other place I' d stepped on.
- 2:19From the next day on, I' d work as a morgue janitor.
- 2:23He' s got a knot in his throat. Overwhelmed by the information,
- 2:28he questioned the decision to take the job the doctor noticed the mood change in
- 2:32Samuel and asked what was the final decision. With some doubt he accepted the
- 2:38proposal. They shook hands, the deal was already closed, and the next
- 2:44day he would show up at his new workplace at the Morgue inside his little
- 2:50house. Samuel had dinner thinking about what it would be like to work in
- 2:53that place. Just thinking that he would work in a place where death was
- 2:58present, he began to despair and even to reject the position. At the
- 3:02end of his dinner, he set out to go to sleep. He walked
- 3:06to his bed. Next to her was a small bureau, which had a
- 3:09picture of his late wife. When he took it, he could not help
- 3:15but remember that tragic night when his beloved' s body was delivered to him,
- 3:21a tear fell on the photo, but when he saw the portrait,
- 3:24he conveyed to him a feeling of courage, as if his wife were encouraging
- 3:30him to accept that work and go for that determined salary. Samuel would go
- 3:35the next day in search of a new chapter within his office. As a
- 3:38janitor. The day' s here. Samuel was preparing to begin a new
- 3:44phase. He went out with all the attitude on his way to that dark
- 3:47place. Crossing the door of the morgue, he seemed to have crossed into
- 3:53another world, a world of complete darkness and total silence. The receptionist saw
- 3:58Samuel come in and asked who that guy was quoting. He said he'
- 4:01d be the new janitor. The woman. He immediately got up from his
- 4:05desk. He welcomed him and began to show him the place, as well
- 4:11as everything related to his work. While it was explained to him, the
- 4:16entire ambulance was present. Emergency bodies lowered a stretcher covered with a white sheet.
- 4:23The woman took the opportunity to let Samuel know that she would have to
- 4:29clean up any traces of dirt left by the paramedics in her course in the
- 4:33room, where the bodies would be examined and when the forensics left, she
- 4:39would also have to clean inside the room. He started his work at the
- 4:42morgue. He cleaned the halls, shook the furniture, moped the floor.
- 4:46The morgue looked cleaner than ever. The main part of the place was glowing.
- 4:53Now it would have to pass to that dark room where the lifeless bodies
- 4:57rested l l l l l l l n n NS their working material.
- 5:00With him he knocked on the door of the room to verify that no doctor
- 5:05was there and did not interrupt his work. No one answered. Then he
- 5:10entered and watched the whole place carefully, several steel tables, lamps everywhere and
- 5:15work equipment that with the brightness of the lights emitted dim glows. He began
- 5:23by throwing the dust from the tables to the ground and then being swept away
- 5:27by his broom and finally passing the mop. The floor had a few stains
- 5:31representing all the bodies that had arrived at that place. When cleaning, I
- 5:36couldn' t help feeling the heavy atmosphere. You could not imagine how many
- 5:42corpses had passed through the morgue how many souls had failed to find their way
- 5:46and decided to stay there. He left the room and went to the cellar,
- 5:51where he could rest when he would not have to clean up. Despite
- 5:58being a small space, he had a chair to rest on, as well
- 6:02as an old TV where he could be distracted and a small microwave oven to
- 6:08heat food in case he was going to starve sitting. He took a moment
- 6:14to reflect on how his first day was going. Everything was going on normally.
- 6:21The days passed. Every morning. Samuel woke up early to clean up
- 6:27and prepare his lunch. He was early for his job. Kindly, I
- 6:31greeted all the workers. I had some pleasant talks with the receptionist and the
- 6:36paramedics. Similarly, forensic doctors told stories about the place. Samuel quickly became
- 6:44dear to all, not only for his good attitude, but also for his
- 6:48excellent work. One afternoon, when the sun was hiding and the night was
- 6:55beginning to make a presence, the sound of the sirens was heard in the
- 7:00distance to approach. Emergency teams quickly came down from the back of the ambulance.
- 7:06The body of a man who had been murdered. The stretcher was completely
- 7:11bloody. Samuel looked with shock and horror The scene was amazed because, even
- 7:16though the body was lifeless, the body was still shedding blood. Paramedics were
- 7:23desperate not to be able to control the situation, who could not believe that
- 7:29the body was still pouring so much red fluid. The stretcher entered the room
- 7:33with forensics, but left a great trail of blood. Samuel, seeing tremendous
- 7:39filth, ran for his mop, prepared to clean up all that mess.
- 7:46With the mop in hand. He approached the pool of blood ready to clear
- 7:50the trail of violence he had invaded. The morgue began to pass the object
- 7:56through the floor, but it was holding fast to stay there. It was
- 8:00hard for him to remove that stain. Samuel was going through a stressful moment.
- 8:05On the one hand, forensic doctors were desperately heard arguing with the paramedics
- 8:11about themselves. In fact, this person no longer had life and, on
- 8:16the other hand, the blood trail impossible to remove from the floor was increasingly
- 8:20carved with force, but every effort was useless. Blood only took strange forms.
- 8:28Samuel tired, made one last attempt and with hope passed over the blood
- 8:33stain. Surrealistically. The blood began to be molded into a creepy figure a
- 8:41deformed hand that twisted and was dragged down the ground. He did the autopsy
- 8:45room, where all the personnel involved were amazed by the scene, and looked
- 8:52at it with disbelief and horror. A curious thing was that at that moment
- 8:56the silence took hold of the love that in the halls no voices were heard,
- 9:01no sound inside or outside was heard. Everything was absolute Silence was hypnotized
- 9:07by that blood stain until it suddenly felt a blow of the air that would
- 9:15bring it back to reality. He passed the mop again and finally managed to
- 9:20remove the stain from the floor. While Samuel was putting up the wet floor
- 9:24signs, the coroners came out of the room upset with the paramedics disguising.
- 9:30He managed to hear part of the discussion. The body, which supposedly no
- 9:33longer had life, still had vital signs and had been taken by the ambulance
- 9:39to the wrong place, where it finally found its way to death. The
- 9:46doubt was born in Samuel, who could not believe what he was hearing,
- 9:50as it was possible that the paramedics did not realize that the body was still
- 9:54alive. It was impossible for him to believe what happened. I waited patiently
- 10:00for the atmosphere to calm down to put an end to the intrigue. Finally,
- 10:05he had a chance to approach forensics. He went into the autopsy room
- 10:09on the excuse that he' d clean up the space. Upon entering,
- 10:13he noticed forensics talking right in front of the body about what happened. While
- 10:18asking permission to enter the room, he took the courage to ask the question
- 10:22that would solve all his doubt. He asked what exactly had happened. The
- 10:28coroners, having a good relationship with Samuel, approached kindly to explain calmly what
- 10:33happened. Apparently, the victim had gone through a case of catalepsy, which
- 10:39consists of a person lying motionless as if he were dead and without vital signs,
- 10:45but still in a conscious state and suddenly reacting. They commented that these
- 10:52cases rarely occurred. The body, when it arrived, had no vital signs,
- 10:58only uncontrolled bleeding. S As he began to analyze it, his heartbeat
- 11:03returned rapidly. It was urgent to admit him to a hospital, but time
- 11:07moved fast and he lost his life definitively. Samuel listened attentively with amazement.
- 11:13The doctors looked at him head- on. As they tried to explain everything
- 11:18in detail with simple words, they turned their backs on the body, so
- 11:22they did not notice the traumatic moment Samuel was about to observe the body lay
- 11:28motionless like a mannequin of flesh and bone. However, in an instant of
- 11:33paralyzing horror, Samuel saw the dead man' s eyes looking at him as
- 11:39if he were watching from the abyss of death. With a trembling voice he
- 11:45pointed the phenomenon to forensics, but his response was simple. It was impossible.
- 11:50The body no longer contained a single trace of life that allowed such movements.
- 11:56The forensics, stressed by the sight, left the room during that night,
- 12:01leaving Samuel alone with the body. Before they crossed the door, he
- 12:05asked if the body would remain there assisting with its head. They answered their
- 12:11question, promising that they would deal with the matter later. Likewise, they
- 12:16asked him in favor to cover the body with a sheet with fear he complied
- 12:22with the order. He took a sheet out of a locker. He approached
- 12:26the corpse with his heart in his throat and spread the cloth over the cold
- 12:31body, facing the challenge of cleaning up the disaster that the events had left
- 12:37behind, began to do his work. The mop' s sound, scraping
- 12:43with the ground, resonated in the silence surrounding it. As he progressed in
- 12:48his labors, the feeling that the body observed him could not be removed.
- 12:52He felt the heavy presence of the body as a shadow on his back,
- 12:58as if the breath of his soul caressed his neck. In each movement,
- 13:03for the moment he was forced to turn his gaze and face the look of
- 13:07the body that, despite being covered by the sheet, felt that it was
- 13:11passing through the cloth. He was trying to get to the idea that that
- 13:16look of the corpse towards him had been the product of his imagination and the
- 13:20stress of the moment. Samuel finally finished cleaning the room, there was no
- 13:26more blood or dirt in the place, as if nothing had happened, with
- 13:31cautious steps, he picked up his equipment and headed to the exit, leaving
- 13:35behind that room with traces of death and desolation. However, he barely closed
- 13:41the door and advanced a few steps. Strikes from the room resounded in the
- 13:46ears of Samuel, who stopped dry with fear on his legs. He went
- 13:50back to the room looking for the origin of those blows. When he opened
- 13:56the door, he only found the steel tables motionless and the body lay lifeless,
- 14:00resting in his state of death, confused and terrified, he returned to
- 14:05the cellar. The cold sweat scurried on his forehead, as his mind tried
- 14:09to find logical explanations for what he had just experienced within his space. With
- 14:16trembling hands, he kept his team, took a seat in the chair that
- 14:20the morgue gave him, lit the small TV and crossed his arms, watched
- 14:26a football match exhausted by all emotions and lack of sleep, his eyes began
- 14:31to close. He was carried away by the tranquility that enveloped the cellar,
- 14:37falling into a deep sleep. His breathing became slow and heavy, completely unconscious,
- 14:43as if he were now one more of the corpses. The dream,
- 14:50which seemed to be a brief break, became a nap of several hours that
- 14:54would have been interrupted by a broom falling from the warehouse of s RNS.
- 15:00He immediately looked at his watch and the morning had come quickly. He left
- 15:05the cellar to realize that he was alone in the morgue, surrounded by darkness
- 15:09and complete solitude, which caused a chill to run through his spine. He
- 15:16wasn' t convinced he was alone in the morgue. He hoped that at
- 15:20least one guard or a doctor should be there, so he began to walk
- 15:24the deserted corridors looking for someone who might be his companion. However, I
- 15:31couldn' t find anyone. Instead, he only found the echo of his
- 15:35own steps and noises that in the light of day seemed insignificant at that time
- 15:41were amplified throughout the morgue filling in air with a very heavy vibration. As
- 15:48he walked, he found himself in front of the living room. Out of
- 15:50curiosity, he popped his head. The interior was in complete darkness, except
- 15:54for a single light that illuminated the interior. This light gave the dead street
- 16:00that went through the Catalepsia case. The body was still there. Seeing him,
- 16:06he felt a chill going through his entire body. I felt that the
- 16:10body would rise at any moment from the steel table. With his hasty step,
- 16:15he returned to his only refuge, to the cellar, where he would
- 16:18wait for a living soul to arrive and go home. He tried to find
- 16:25the dream again. Fortunately, he was able to make it. The TV
- 16:30was still on. The sounds of the commercials were their only company. The
- 16:34quiet dream would not last long, as the noises were present, blows on
- 16:40the steel table, steps in the corridors, hands scratching the walls and a
- 16:45deep voice complaining throughout the morgue, Samuel tried to stay in his sleep closing
- 16:51his eyes tightly. Suddenly, the presence lurking through the halls ceased to manifest
- 16:56a little calmer. He settled in his chair, opened his eyes for a
- 17:03moment, and before closing them again, he looked around and found that body
- 17:07standing right next to him, causing him to faint immediately. During his unconscious
- 17:15state, his mind began to project disturbing images, some from the past and
- 17:21others from the present. Those images showed Samuel on the day of the accident
- 17:26with his wife accompanied the stretcher where he lay dead. Only on this occasion
- 17:32she twisted imploring to be taken to the hospital, but he did not take
- 17:37it into account. She arrived at the mooring with her wife' s body
- 17:41alive and was admitted to the autopsy room, where she screamed in great pain.
- 17:45As forensic doctors began to examine every part of it. Samuel only stood
- 17:52in front of the door. Suddenly the past mixed with the present. The
- 17:57recent memory of hunger, arriving with a body full of blood. The man
- 18:03struggled to escape from that stretcher and so much was his effort that he fell
- 18:08to the floor staining everything with blood. The paramedics began to drag him into
- 18:15the room and the man refused to surrender. It was taken from the feet
- 18:18of Samuel, who was still. Witnessing everything that happened, the paramedics pulled
- 18:25the man harder, who cried out for help. Little by little, he
- 18:30let go of his feet and began to cling to the ground, leaving the
- 18:34trail of his bloody fingernails on the floor. It seemed that the message that
- 18:38all the shed blood was giving the janitor was to avoid letting his bearer die,
- 18:44but that unfortunately, he never understood and could not do anything about it.
- 18:49Those images caused Samuel to react to fainting, but he found no peace
- 18:55of mind. Hits on the steel table in the autopsy room resounded with great
- 18:59attention. Desperate. He decided to leave the love that forever took his things
- 19:04and left the cellar. He made his way out and before reaching the front
- 19:10door, he noticed that the door in the room was open with a knot
- 19:15in his throat and heart. Beating at a thousand an hour, he came
- 19:18to the door. As he looked out, he was frozen and felt his
- 19:22stomach fall off. The lifeless body was no longer on the steel table suddenly
- 19:26appeared in front of him. Samuel fell to the ground and began to be
- 19:33dragged. He held on just like the man and the blood left the mark
- 19:37on his fingernails. The wing door closed along with Samuel' s fate The
- 19:41next day. In the morning, forensic doctors found a heartbreaking scene that had
- 19:48no explanation. Exaggerated blood stains that came from Samuel' s lifeless body.
- 19:56Funny thing was that the man' s body lay on the steel bed like
- 20:00he never left that autopsy room inside the morgue. I was always an observer
- 20:12of everything related to shadows. He was a collector of dark moments that other
- 20:18people preferred to ignore. The deepest and darkest things I captured with my camera
- 20:23From a young age I was intrigued by the mysteries that surround people after death.
- 20:32My passion for photography was born out of that strange curiosity for the unknown.
- 20:38I first held a camera when I was barely ten. My father taught
- 20:44me the essentials for a young child. He took me to a garden where
- 20:48he thought I was capturing nature, the sunset birds. But it wasn'
- 20:53t like that. I was taking pictures of a bird on the floor in
- 20:57his last moments of life. At that time I knew that my destiny was
- 21:03to capture the essence of the darkness in the images, but I did not
- 21:07do it out of morbidness or some disorder, but I always saw the same
- 21:12photographs of families animal portraits. The same as always no one dared to cross
- 21:18that line between the known and the unknown. I wanted to combine the two
- 21:25things that caught my attention the most photography and shadows. After death, my
- 21:29path was taking shape over time. One night when I was already more aware
- 21:36of my future and what I wanted to do during my life, I was
- 21:40surfing the Internet in search of inspiration and suddenly I found shocking photographs of unsolved
- 21:45crime scenes, car accidents and human tragedies. Instead of feeling repulsive, I
- 21:55experienced a strange fascination for the rawness of those images, for the truth they
- 22:00showed, truths that doctors only showed through words and medical reports. The idea
- 22:07of photographing these kinds of scenes came into my mind with force like a seed
- 22:11that had been planted a long time ago and at that time began to germinate
- 22:18in the darkest space of my head. I knew I couldn' t settle
- 22:22for being a mere spectator of death. I needed to get into it,
- 22:27see it more closely, so I could understand it from within. It was
- 22:33at that moment that I decided to take a step of courage and volunteer to
- 22:37work with the emergency bodies, again, remembering that I did not do it
- 22:41for the morbid or to attract attention. It was something that really fascinated me
- 22:47and I had the burning desire to capture the raw truth, without any sort
- 22:52of filter, human existence. At their final moment, the emergency corps urgently
- 22:56needed volunteers, so they soon accepted me as part of their team. I
- 23:04began my journey into a dark world, where death and pain were the bread
- 23:08of every day. The thin line between life and death was manifested in every
- 23:14scene we were going to. My House and I have become witnesses of those
- 23:18tragedies. Paramedics who were supposed to be prepared to see such images sometimes refused
- 23:25to approach the most heartbreaking scenes they could have seen. For me, there
- 23:33was no choice. It was part of my volunteer work. These scenes were
- 23:37necessary both for research and for the precise definition of the reasons for death.
- 23:45All team members were surprised to see how, with professionalism and fear, he
- 23:49captured all those scenes. I met David, an old doctor who was the
- 23:56leader of the emergency team an n On one occasion we agreed on the route
- 24:02and we found ourselves in one of the worst scenes ever seen so far,
- 24:06a five- car car accident that left a path of destruction and pain.
- 24:12While I was looking for angles and details, he noticed how he seemed to
- 24:17be an expert in my work, so he congratulated me. He recognized me
- 24:21as one of the bravest members I' d ever met in time. David
- 24:26and I became good friends. We shared the same fascination with life and death.
- 24:33I admired my dedication to photography and I admired his courage to safeguard people
- 24:38' s lives. One time we went back to the office. After a
- 24:44long night. He approached me and told me that in the city morgue they
- 24:48needed a photographer who would take graphic evidence of the bodies entering the place.
- 24:56At first, the idea of working in the morgue stood out to me,
- 25:00causing a chill all over my body. I thought about whether I could bear
- 25:04the intensity of that environment being alone in the coldness of death. Many doubts
- 25:10began to pass through my head, but later, reflecting, I understood that
- 25:15it was a unique opportunity to explore new boundaries in the art I dominated.
- 25:21I told David that I would accept the position and the next day, first
- 25:25thing in the morning, I would be there with a firm stance. I
- 25:30headed for the Morgue, on the shores of the city. He was ready
- 25:34to start a new path, face the darkest secrets and the cruelest truths about
- 25:41those people' s death passed the first few days. It was a completely
- 25:48new experience for me. There was a big difference between what I volunteered and
- 25:52what I now do as a morgue worker. In this place I no longer
- 25:57saw newly deceased people. Now I saw only pale naked bodies. Some of
- 26:03them had calm faces as if they were sleeping in peace, but others showed
- 26:10suffering and violence. Each body was unique, each had a story to tell
- 26:15and a reason to be there. Forensics required my services as a photographer for
- 26:21the body file and as evidence that they were doing their job. He witnessed
- 26:27how the bodies opened precisely, as if it were surgery. They were looking
- 26:33for answers that could reveal the truth behind his death. The white light on
- 26:38the corpse, the sound of the instruments used, the echo that occurred when
- 26:44touching the steel table, the lifeless body, all contributed to creating a surrealist
- 26:48environment. During my time as a photographer, I looked at all kinds of
- 26:56deaths, accidents, murders, natural deaths and each face was unique. The
- 27:02months passed like water over time I got used to it and somehow everything became
- 27:07routine. Despite that, I was still doing my best as a photographer.
- 27:11I never did a bad job. One night after a long day in the
- 27:18morgue, I sat in front of my computer because I had to erase old
- 27:23photos that no longer served me. The time had come to free up space
- 27:27in the memory of the Chamber. That meant going back to the past and
- 27:33reviewing every image. Every picture passed one more shocking than another. So many
- 27:38people who died on my camera gave me a strange feeling that would take over
- 27:44me. The images of the bodies, the grotesque wounds, the faces at
- 27:48rest, those pictures seemed to take life before my eyes. Again, with
- 27:53every picture I saw was a reminder of how fragile life was, that death
- 27:59was inevitable. Even though I was used to seeing those scenarios. This time,
- 28:07seeing all those pictures caused something to change. The feeling of discomfort,
- 28:11both physically and mentally, seized me and increased each passing to the next image.
- 28:18It was as if he were on a journey in which there were only
- 28:23misfortunes and dead bodies. The pressure on each photo caused it to enter a
- 28:29state of despair. Turning off the computer, I was in the dark in
- 28:34my room. At that moment of loneliness, I knew with certainty that I
- 28:38no longer wanted to witness death. That way a desire to end that stage
- 28:44of my life was born. To relax, I decided to go to sleep
- 28:49in the morning. I' d think about getting out of that place and
- 28:52ending that chapter of my life in the dark of the night. I fell
- 28:59completely into a dream that at first was a space of peace, but soon
- 29:03it became a nightmare from which I could not escape. Me. I found
- 29:08in the morgue, in a large room where I saw every moment I had
- 29:14photographed, every death in which I had been present and, worse still,
- 29:18every body I captured with my camera. The bodies came to life. These
- 29:22bodies twisted, suffering with a lot of pain, their open wounds. They
- 29:27bled uncontrollably as they looked at me with empty, lifeless eyes. When I
- 29:33finally woke up, I was soaked in sweat and trembling with fear. That
- 29:37nightmare was the final blow to confirm that he needed to get out of that
- 29:42way. I left home determined to end this chapter of my life. When
- 29:48I came to love that I met David, who had come exclusively to talk
- 29:52to me, I needed a great favor. He said they didn' t
- 29:57have any volunteers or n o n o need someone to do the work I
- 30:02did. Before I could tell him I was about to resign, he asked
- 30:07me to help them take the photographs he had taken. Like when I was
- 30:12a volunteer. I hesitated to accept, but I thought of my friend how
- 30:18he had always supported me and opened the doors to something I was supposed to
- 30:22be passionate about. I agreed to help for this week only. David thanked
- 30:27me and said he would come back for me later. Forensic doctors also started
- 30:33talking to me had a body to analyze and needed the photographer. I went
- 30:40into the autopsy room. The doctors met a child' s body, which
- 30:44had been hit for the first time. I couldn' t resist seeing a
- 30:48corpse, let alone a minor. The doctors asked me if I was feeling
- 30:55well, because they noticed me very scared and with all the fear of the
- 30:59world, I decided to face the situation. I swallowed the fear and continued
- 31:03to do what I had always done, photographing corpses. So I continued with
- 31:08the bodies that arrived during the day. In the afternoon, David came to
- 31:12pick me up just as we had met. I got in the ambulance between
- 31:18talks. The point came up that I was already tired of that job.
- 31:22I didn' t want to witness bodies or anything related to that anymore.
- 31:26My friend made me one of the comments that would leave me very upset.
- 31:30He told me that, unfortunately, even though we stopped doing this, we
- 31:34could never regain the peace we had before. It' s something that would
- 31:40mark us for life. When he agreed to be a doctor, he was
- 31:45aware of all the images he would look at for the rest of his life
- 31:49and still stood firm in his position. He said it was normal to feel
- 31:53that kind of thing, to want to give up and leave everything behind,
- 31:59but we couldn' t change anything anymore what I did was those words.
- 32:01They made me reflect for a moment and let me know that, unfortunately those
- 32:08images would accompany me for the rest of my life and so I accepted my
- 32:13path that I had built myself since I was a child. With that talk
- 32:17I had with David, I continued to photograph bodies of corpses. I didn
- 32:22' t quit the job I had at the morgue. On the contrary,
- 32:25I took it as inspiration to improve and be braver. I spent the next
- 32:31few days of the week helping David volunteer. When they finally found a volunteer,
- 32:37I returned to my usual schedule inside the morgue. When the doctors arrived,
- 32:42they were examining a body. I immediately began to do my job.
- 32:46They opened the body and began to search for traces that would tell them what
- 32:52was the cause of the loss. With great courage, I captured every moment,
- 32:57the body of the immobile man had a look that gave that it penetrated
- 33:00the doctors and me. Unlike the last time I was there, now I
- 33:05no longer felt any fear. Again I became the same brave boy without fear
- 33:08of seeing heartbreaking scenes. Apparently, everything was back to the way it used
- 33:15to be, the routine that used to begin to overwhelm me. Now I
- 33:20had become as normal to get up every day wondering what kind of body I
- 33:24would see during the day. Everything was going on in a normal way.
- 33:30The night was falling my friend David would arrive with a body of a man
- 33:35who would have died for strange reasons. He asked me, as soon as
- 33:37forensics knew what the cause of death was, to warn him immediately he went
- 33:43down with the stretcher and the body was transferred to the autopsy room, where
- 33:46the doctors waited. When the body was uncovered, it had a serious face,
- 33:52but with suffering, as if the person was aware that his final hour
- 33:58had arrived and was accepted with fear. Forensics started opening the body, made
- 34:04their notes to draw their conclusions. I, for one, started taking the
- 34:08evidence. The first pictures came out correctly, but when they were taken,
- 34:15the man' s gaze was fixed on the camera lens. That look started
- 34:17to make me a little nervous. I began to feel that fear again,
- 34:23that fear that caused the photos not to have a good result. I failed
- 34:29several times until again space was full. I told the doctors I needed to
- 34:34free up memory space or I couldn' t keep taking the evidence. They
- 34:38told me to do it quickly. I ran to the computer at the reception,
- 34:45just like last time I started taking a photo. I remembered the past
- 34:50again and the trauma came back to me. I got to the pictures of
- 34:53the body. Newly arrived, these looked blurry, but the body' s
- 34:58look was in good quality. It was easy to tell. His eyes stuck
- 35:02inside me. I kept going until I got to a photo where I found
- 35:08something strange. A black stain had crossed between the chamber and the body.
- 35:13It was strange to me, since something like that had never happened before.
- 35:17That black spot caused me too much curiosity. The following pictures of the body
- 35:22also showed up the stain, so I deleted all those photos as there were
- 35:29no more recent photos. Automatically, the computer returned me to the oldest,
- 35:34where I took the surprise that the stain had been transported. To those photos
- 35:38I kept moving forward and in all the photos the stain appeared and grew bigger
- 35:44and bigger. Forensic doctors rushed out of the room saying they urgently needed them
- 35:50on the road. A strong car crash had happened and they were the only
- 35:57doctors nearby. I asked what it was like with the body, to which
- 36:01they answered to take the necessary photos and then save it in the freezer.
- 36:07Upon returning from their work, they will continue to review. I was completely
- 36:13alone in the morgue. I looked back at the computer. There was no
- 36:16stain on the photos anymore. At the time I knew something was wrong inside
- 36:21the place. To make sure the stain was no longer found, I began
- 36:25to re- check the photos inside the Chamber. These did not present the
- 36:30anomaly, but they had something even worse. As each image passed, it
- 36:36seemed to come to life, as the suffering of each victim of death was
- 36:40felt intensely. I went through each one and made the journey back to the
- 36:45past. The nightmare I once had was presenting itself in reality suddenly noises.
- 36:52Very strong blows were heard in the autopsy room to the objects complained. I
- 37:00was sure someone was there, so I decided to get out of there immediately,
- 37:06trying to turn off my camera a photo that would leave me icy,
- 37:10appear on the screen. It was me without trace of life, lying on
- 37:15one of the steel stretchers with scars that had opened my whole body. I
- 37:21ran to the autopsy room, where was the body that had unleashed all chaos.
- 37:27As I entered just like the nightmare, all the pictures I took came
- 37:31to life. I found on the stretchers all the bodies I photographed, from
- 37:36adults to minors. Those pale bodies without life for some very strange reason,
- 37:43again had life in their heart. They let me see their anger, their
- 37:46thirst for revenge for desecrating their rest. When they were captured by my camera,
- 37:52they all judged me with hatred. They threw themselves at me scratching my
- 37:57entire face and body, some even perforating me looking at my skin with the
- 38:01utensils forensics used. At the time of your work. I was being attacked
- 38:07by all the dead I captured inside my camera. I started screaming for help
- 38:14through fate. My friend David got scared into the living room. I held
- 38:17him tight as I told him everything that was going on. For some strange
- 38:22reason, the dead did not attack him and only stood by. My friend
- 38:28David grabbed me tightly by the arm and pulled me out of the morgue.
- 38:31Some time later I found out something. There were never such living dead.
- 38:37My friend David asked the high command of the morgue to check the security cameras
- 38:40to see what had happened. Really. On the cameras it looked like I
- 38:47started losing my head in front of the computer screen at the reception. Then
- 38:53I went to the autopsy room, where I found the body that the forensics
- 38:58were swimming pretty. For a few minutes, I stood still staring at him
- 39:05and then started having strange behaviors. I hurt myself with my hands and materials
- 39:10to open the bodies. Finally, David came to my rescue. There was
- 39:16never any attack on me. The result of seeing so many deaths, so
- 39:22many traumatizing things caused me to be insanity. That nightmare was the first sign,
- 39:28a sign I completely ignored and was now suffering the consequences. After several
- 39:34months, I finally stopped going to places where misfortunes happened and there were death
- 39:38trails. Finally, it was all over, although the dead are still attacking
- 39:45me in my nightmares. Now I find myself quieter here locked in a room
- 39:50of four dead- end walls, where I' ll wait for my final
- 39:55demise and be taken to the morgue, where they' ll take a final
- 39:59piece of evidence. La la la la, what will be the last photo
- 40:00of my entire existence. My name is Ana and I was studying the career
- 40:13of forensic doctor, a career that has guided me through the labyrinths of science
- 40:16and darkness. She was a committed student, eager to get into the secrets
- 40:23that lie hidden under her body. After death, I was about to finish
- 40:29the race. After several years of study, I would finally receive officially.
- 40:36I just needed one last thing to do. Before I finished my studies,
- 40:40I had to do my professional internships. I was very excited about the idea
- 40:45of that, as it would be my first step to the world of work.
- 40:50I wanted very much to find a good place to do them and would
- 40:55give my best effort so that, at the end of them, I would
- 40:59be hired in the place and not have much need to look for work.
- 41:02I started looking for hospitals where I could practice. I sent thousands of requests
- 41:08and waited for one of them to answer me. The days passed, no
- 41:14one answered and began to discourage me. Still, I had faith that I
- 41:17would come to an answer. One afternoon, while I was reading my cell
- 41:22phone, a notification arrived. I quickly took my cell phone, as it
- 41:29was an e- mail from one of the hospitals to which I had applied.
- 41:34My face was filled with joy when I saw that I had been accepted
- 41:37into one of them. In the mail they asked me to introduce myself the
- 41:40next week to begin with my activities. I was filled with excitement. I
- 41:46' d be working in a hospital. At first I was surprised to see
- 41:51that I would do my internship in a hospital. I wasn' t a
- 41:54nurse or a doctor. My career was totally different from safeguarding my life.
- 42:00It was to treat what happened after death, maybe in the hospital I would
- 42:04be assigned such tasks. What was important to me was that I had finally
- 42:09found a place. The days went by every time the day was closer,
- 42:15the day I would finally start applying everything I learned during my years of studying
- 42:21in the Forensics career I warned my whole family that I would be working in
- 42:27a city hospital. Several congratulated me and, at the same time, asked
- 42:31me to be careful about the environment in which I was going to be working.
- 42:37My most believing relatives told me that it would be a good option for
- 42:40me to carry a rosary with me to protect myself from any bad energy in
- 42:45the place, but I did not believe in that. The night before,
- 42:50the day before, I saved all my necessary things to arrive very early.
- 42:54On my first day, my nerves wouldn' t let me fall asleep.
- 42:59This was in uar experiencing an emotion that I had never felt before. After
- 43:05hours of sleep, the sun came out and the alarm is it' s
- 43:08time to show my forensic skills. When I arrived at the hospital, I
- 43:15was received by the manager, who first gave me a small interview. He
- 43:19wanted to find out if I had enough capabilities for the activities that I would
- 43:23be assigned. I told him I was aware of everything that led to being
- 43:29a forensic doctor, so I knew it was what needed to be done.
- 43:32The doctor, pleased with the commitment he was showing, told me that he
- 43:37would not be working in the hospital, but that he would be taken to
- 43:42the morgue which was right next to the cemetery of the city. He explained
- 43:46to me and was sincere in telling me that in the morgue there were not
- 43:52many doctors working there, only three and two guards guarding the pantheon and the
- 43:57morgue, which were connected, so it was easy to overwhelm each place.
- 44:01When I found out that I would be next to the cemetery, where all
- 44:07souls were buried, I hesitated a bit to move on. The doctor noticed
- 44:10my nervousness and told me that if I wasn' t sure, I could
- 44:15not take the position and later, when I was ready, I would be
- 44:19welcome. For a moment, I thought about it, but I also thought
- 44:23about all the way that I had already walked to finish the race, all
- 44:29the obstacles that I overcome I couldn' t back down. Now I accepted
- 44:32the position and the doctor accepted the answer and welcomed me to the team.
- 44:37In the same way, he gave me a kid, who had what it
- 44:42took to occupy that place. Inside him there were in goggles mouth covering gloves,
- 44:47but one thing that really surprised me was that there was a religious image
- 44:52which, behind her contained a prayer. I asked the doctor the reason for
- 44:57that image at n s s s s. NS. I noticed that question
- 45:00a little nervous, but immediately answered that, despite being experts in the world
- 45:06of medicine, during and after life, extra help was never badly received.
- 45:13Something reasonable was done to me, but I wasn' t quite sure.
- 45:17The doctor asked me if I was ready. He answered by stating the answer
- 45:22and told me that as soon as I got to the ambulance, it would
- 45:27transport me to the morgue, where they explained me more in detail what I
- 45:30would have to do. I sat in the main room waiting for him to
- 45:35come to the ambulance to pick me up. The hospital staff passed by me
- 45:39while they were doing their jobs. Some were coming up to talk a little
- 45:45bit, asking if I needed anything. I was responding to what I was
- 45:50doing there. I was the new practitioner in the Forensics area and I was
- 45:54waiting for the vehicle that would take me to the morgue to start my work.
- 46:00Most were surprised to hear that. Some wished me good luck and others
- 46:05asked if I had already received my religious image. After answering the question I
- 46:10questioned why, and casually everyone said the same thing. You always have to
- 46:16have extra help It started to seem strange to me the insistence of the people
- 46:22of the hospital when they wanted me to carry a religious image. Perhaps it
- 46:25was strange because I was not a believer, so I forgot that subject.
- 46:32The day was past and the ambulance was not here. I was about to
- 46:37go to the doctor' s office when, suddenly, a voice from the
- 46:40hospital entrance began to utter my name aloud. When I turned around, I
- 46:46found a man wearing a doctor' s uniform and as I approached him he
- 46:52said he was coming for me to take me to the morgue to break the
- 46:55ice. He made a little joke and told me he wouldn' t take
- 46:59me. For what everyone goes to that place, but for me to start
- 47:02my work as a forensic doctor, we both exchanged. A little laugh went
- 47:08up to the ambulance and we started the way to the morgue outside the city.
- 47:15The car went on. He went into more and more lonely streets,
- 47:20where traffic was minimal. While we were on the move, I wondered about
- 47:24my life, how I had chosen to study that career, what caught my
- 47:29attention the most, and what my plans were. When I finished my internships,
- 47:35I answered each of them with luxury of detail. The man made the
- 47:38road very pleasant. We finally got the man parked the ambulance. Kindly,
- 47:45he opened the door and helped me down. I got the kid that had
- 47:50been delivered to the hospital. He said I was very brave when I entered
- 47:53that place. Besides, she also told me never to let go of my
- 47:59religious image, something confused. I said everything would be fine. We enter
- 48:04the cemetery, a place where there is absolutely nothing to live or at least
- 48:08cannot be perceived by the naked eye. Although I did not like the idea
- 48:13of entering that place, it was necessary to do so, since both places
- 48:17were connected. The door gnashed at being opened. The morgue appeared before me
- 48:22as a space of darkness and solitude. The air felt pretty cold. Heavy.
- 48:30Immediately the pentrant odors reached my nose, which meant it was time to
- 48:35use the Cubrebocas. The grey walls showed how the years had passed over the
- 48:40Morgue. The paramedic started showing me the whole place. As we moved forward,
- 48:46I realized that there was not much staff in the place, just a
- 48:51few doctors who showed themselves to be very sharp. The man said it was
- 48:54because of the stress of work. We enter a huge room where the bodies
- 49:00rest in the metal beds waiting to be analyzed by the doctors. The cold
- 49:07felt more intense inside that room. I watched in detail everything there, every
- 49:14material they used and at that time I felt that I was prepared, as
- 49:20it didn' t cost me much to recognize every surgical tool in the place.
- 49:24As I entered the bottom of the room, I understood the reason for
- 49:29the intense cold. There were the cooling compartments where the bodies were kept waiting
- 49:34in the cold darkness to be claimed. The tour was about to end.
- 49:40Not without first showing me one of the rooms that can cause the most fear.
- 49:45That room was the place where the dead applied that famous passage of the
- 49:50Bible dust you are and into dust you will become, it was the cremation
- 49:53room, a giant furnace lay there waiting to be fed by one of the
- 50:00many bodies that would seal his life in the ashes. Finally he took me
- 50:05to where I could take short breaks, to a small room where there was
- 50:09only a comfortable armchair, as well as several books that I could read during
- 50:16the free time while we talked. One of the few doctors arrived I was
- 50:21introduced to him. The doctor left me with him to explain to me what
- 50:24he would do. I thanked him for all the attentions. The doctor,
- 50:30with a serious look, explained to me what my duties would be. Fill
- 50:34in the body file, assist him while analyzing the body and finally take the
- 50:39bodies to the compartments. Strange as it seemed, I was excited. A
- 50:46body came to the amorgue quickly. I went to get him covered in a
- 50:52sheet, took him to the autopsy room. The doctor was preparing to start
- 50:55doing his job. I put together the tools that were used and just like
- 51:00in surgery, I passed every utensil to the doctor while watching how he did
- 51:07his work in my mind took note of everything he did. We' re
- 51:13done analyzing. I filled out the file and wrote down the cause of death
- 51:16that the doctor had completed. Finally, I took the body to his refrigeration
- 51:22waiting for his family to claim it. The doctor congratulated me on my great
- 51:27performance. I' m happy for the recognition. I kept doing my best.
- 51:32That' s how my days spent inside the morgue analyzing and guarding bodies.
- 51:37Every day he brought me something new. He understood more the process of
- 51:42death and even saw how even after death the soul of the people was still
- 51:46in there, as on one occasion a man' s body arrived at the
- 51:52place. The widow of the deceased asked for her engagement ring, which had
- 51:57not been removed for twenty years and five years, to be returned immediately.
- 52:00She wanted him so that he would always remember him feeling his presence. However,
- 52:07the ring, being so long on his finger and with his hand tightly
- 52:08closed in the form of a fist, would be very difficult to remove.
- 52:14The only alternative for me was to cut off my finger. However, the
- 52:17doctor said it would not be necessary. He started talking to the corpse in
- 52:22a very nice and quiet way, as if he were still alive. He
- 52:28said his wife needed that ring so that his death wouldn' t separate him
- 52:32and so she could feel his company until they were on the same side.
- 52:37Surprisingly, the man' s fist gradually began to loosen until he could pull
- 52:43out the ring in an easy way. Surprised I asked how that was possible.
- 52:49He replied that, after all, these corpses had a soul feelings.
- 52:53They had been human beings, so talking to them sensitively was very helpful.
- 53:00Another experience I had during those days was to see how, during the autopsy
- 53:05process, a body lifted its leg. At first I was scared, but
- 53:10then I remembered that those movements were normal. Sometimes the corpses had involuntary movements
- 53:15and even produced gases with a powerful smell. The doctor told me everything was
- 53:22normal. He also said it was normal for the containers to hear blows.
- 53:29I found that strange, but he said that sometimes, when the bodies were
- 53:32already inside the compartments, they still had involuntary movements. Something confusing. I
- 53:39was continuing my work. After several bodies we analyzed, one arrived that would
- 53:45have a particular destiny. The body would enter the cremation oven. For the
- 53:51first time I' d take a body to cremate. We put the body
- 53:53on the big steel board. This body had arrived arranged the family. Apparently
- 53:59he opened it, he would have dressed in his favorite clothes. The makeup
- 54:04helped her look like she was just taking a little nap, like it was
- 54:08a bread that was about to be baked. We put the body inside the
- 54:14big oven. The doctor lit the oven and began to feel a great heat
- 54:19in the room. Similarly to the creaks of the body, being burned,
- 54:22they were heard with intensity. Suddenly it was heard how they beat the sheets
- 54:28inside the oven. I got too scared. The doctor persevered and pulled out
- 54:31his religious image. He asked me to do the same. I asked why.
- 54:37He revealed a somewhat terrifying truth to me. He said strange noises sometimes
- 54:43came from the darkest places. The bodies were complaining and most of the time,
- 54:49when a body was cremated, they seemed to complain and tried to deny
- 54:53their fate by hitting the barriers of the furnace. In addition, being close
- 54:59to the cemetery increased the heavy energies within the morgue. For all these facts.
- 55:06Everyone carried with him a religious image that, despite being a believer or
- 55:10not, in these situations was of great help. I continued with my skepticism
- 55:16and tried to calm down. Finally, the body was finally cremated. When
- 55:21we took him out, we found only ashes, which were deposited in a
- 55:27small box that would be handed over to the deceased' s family. The
- 55:30months passed. The day I would finally finish my internship I was close one
- 55:37afternoon while I was alone in the morgue. The doctor arrived in haste along
- 55:40with the hospital doctor and the paramedic. The three people arrived urgently at the
- 55:45morgue. They said there was a big problem. Supposedly a man had been
- 55:52buried alive. The paramedic said that when he raised the body, it had
- 55:57no vital signs. Similarly, the forensic medium mentioned that, when he was
- 56:00analyzing it, it showed no sign that he was still alive. And finally,
- 56:07the doctor said that after the tests carried out, which had taken time
- 56:13to arrive, they showed that the man often suffered heart attacks, which left
- 56:19him unconscious for a long time, but always managed to react. Unfortunately,
- 56:24the last heart attack he would have in the street, while he was alone,
- 56:30so the people around him thought he had died. Upon learning of the
- 56:36case, the family was told, which was quite angry with the hospital and
- 56:39the morgue. Now they demanded that the body be taken out of the cemetery
- 56:45and cremated. All desperate for the situation, we quickly headed to the cemetery,
- 56:53to the place where the body had been buried. The vibe was starting
- 56:57to feel too heavy. The us curity was beginning to cover the place.
- 57:01We got to the grave. The body was exhumed from the ground and the
- 57:06box was taken to the morgue. When we open the box, we all
- 57:10get a big surprise. The top was completely scratched. The hands of the
- 57:16body showed damage from the despair of trying to open the box. The face
- 57:21in the same way, it had an aspect of suffering. The facial expression
- 57:24of the body was disturbing. We were all amazed by what we were seeing.
- 57:31We had seen scenes of accidents, bloody bodies and even maimed, but
- 57:37nothing compared to what was in front of us. A man who was buried,
- 57:40alive and fought in vain trying to escape death. The doctor asked the
- 57:46doctor to accompany him to the hospital to clear things up with the family.
- 57:51Before he left, he told me that I would do all the work,
- 57:54from doing one last test to taking the body to the oven for cremation.
- 58:00My skin became icy when I heard these instructions, but one thing that motivated
- 58:04me was that he also said that it was up to me to keep the
- 58:09plant work very determined and courageously. I started my work as a forensic doctor
- 58:16Everyone left the morgue and I was alone in the autopsy room. I pulled
- 58:21the body out of the box to pass it to the steel table that would
- 58:24enter the big oven. When he was loaded, it was still heavy.
- 58:28It seemed like he was carrying a man who was simply deep asleep. The
- 58:32air on the spot felt heavy and my heart began to beat hard. I
- 58:40gently placed the body on the table. I tried to give the body a
- 58:45quieter posture to his hands willing to scratch I gave them a quieter way while
- 58:51he was taking it in fear. The dead body, silent groans seemed to
- 58:54come out of the mouth of the frightened corpse. I brought a stethos copio
- 59:00to check that he had no vital signs at the time of passing it.
- 59:04From his chest, he definitely had no heartbeat and, in the midst of
- 59:08complete silence, I concentrated on finding a sound that came from the heart.
- 59:15Suddenly, the body had an involuntary movement. This one got up like he
- 59:21was sitting down. I went back scared to see this and the suffering face
- 59:24of the corpse impressed my mind with great courage, I returned the body to
- 59:30its posture. He was clinging to lying down and it seemed that he was
- 59:37still fighting death. I finally managed to put him to bed completely desperate.
- 59:42I hastened to take him once and for all into the big oven to be
- 59:45cremated. I was just finishing to give her a calm posture to her arms.
- 59:52When out of nowhere the Cadaver made more involuntary movements. His Cold hand
- 59:58held fast to my arm and his eyes opened in their entirety. I couldn
- 1:00:01' t help but let go of a scream that sounded loudly throughout the morgue.
- 1:00:06I was desperate as I could get the body to release me. I
- 1:00:10took the steel table and rushed it into the room, where the big oven
- 1:00:15was. Quickly enter the room and run to light the oven. At that
- 1:00:21point everything started to get tense. The complaints from the body were ringing more
- 1:00:27and more, so I took the table and put it on the way to
- 1:00:30the oven. This road was pretty short, but right then it became eternal
- 1:00:35to me as fast as I was going. It almost came into the oven
- 1:00:38and the heat from it felt stronger and stronger. As I approached, the
- 1:00:44body began to have several involuntary movements, which, despite being small, filled
- 1:00:49with fear all my being I began to put the body into the oven,
- 1:00:54which inside was on fire. The feet began to enter and barely felt the
- 1:00:59warmth of the flower. The body complained more intensely as if it had returned
- 1:01:02to life. I no longer knew if it was the product of my imagination
- 1:01:07or what was happening, but to put an end to it, I continued
- 1:01:13to enter the body into the oven. Half the body had entered, but
- 1:01:16it was still complaining. However, there was no turning back and at that
- 1:01:22moment of despair, for the first time I became a believer. I took
- 1:01:25out the religious image that had been given to me since the beginning, but
- 1:01:31it was too late when I felt it least. The corpse took my body
- 1:01:36with force and angryly took me with him to the Oven, where I would
- 1:01:38find my destiny in the midst of the flames of the Great Oven, inside
- 1:01:43the morgue, in a dark city. Paul, an ordinary man of calm
- 1:01:54but tired appearance, lived a life without any meaning. It had been a
- 1:02:00maze for him, a maze of promises, broken and dreams vanished through time,
- 1:02:06dreams and goals that had frozen to fulfill, but which, unfortunately,
- 1:02:09never reached. All this bad streak would be mixed with his professional life for
- 1:02:16months that he couldn' t find a job. It seemed that everything was
- 1:02:21against him every day that passed carried the weight of those disappointments on his bent
- 1:02:27shoulders. As he walked with each step he desperately sought a way out,
- 1:02:32something that would take him out of that hole in which he was trapped without
- 1:02:37being able to escape. One afternoon, as he walked through those desolate streets,
- 1:02:43he found in an old post a torn ad about to be carried by
- 1:02:46the wind. This announcement seemed to be the hope I had been looking for
- 1:02:52so long. However, the announcement was not very encouraging. You' re
- 1:02:58looking for an assistant for the love you local. Those discolored words filled Paul
- 1:03:01with chills, who questioned his need to find work. But remembering all the
- 1:03:07bad streak that had passed, he could not let that opportunity pass without another
- 1:03:14option within his reach, He made the decision to go to the place in
- 1:03:17search of the position offered in the middle of the night that had just fallen.
- 1:03:22He arrived at the dark place where the dead bodies were received and preserved
- 1:03:27for autopsy, burial or cremation. Upon arriving at the place and entering the
- 1:03:31waiting room, he immediately managed to feel a heavy air accompanied by a penetrating
- 1:03:37aroma. He took a seat on an armchair that, as the little sound
- 1:03:43was sitting, was rumbling all over the room. The place paid tribute to
- 1:03:45its purpose, a dead space without any sound, only the air that bore
- 1:03:51the smell of those bodies that had lost signs of life. He started thinking
- 1:03:55about what his life would be like in case he worked there. To his
- 1:04:00head it came that if the atmosphere in the room was already heavy, then
- 1:04:03inside the room, where he would perform his tasks, it would be even
- 1:04:08stronger. He tried to forget about that idea, as he would first have
- 1:04:12to be accepted from an office. The squealing of the door echoed throughout the
- 1:04:17room and the director of the morgue, a man with a cold face,
- 1:04:20with a penetrating look and a grave voice, welcomed Paul. He asked the
- 1:04:27reason for his visit, believing he was there because of something related to the
- 1:04:31bodies, but he did not. The boy commented that he had seen the
- 1:04:35job announcement. The man, a little surprised, confessed that he had forgotten
- 1:04:41that vacancy, since he was several months old, but no one had been
- 1:04:45interested in such work. To his luck, he was still available and the
- 1:04:49man immediately hired him and began to explain the tasks he would have to perform.
- 1:04:56He would be in charge of preparing the bodies for autopsy, commenting on
- 1:05:00forensic findings and keeping the place in order. When he had finished explaining,
- 1:05:05he asked how everything explained seemed to Paul. He didn' t see much
- 1:05:10science at work. He only asked when he would start working. The man
- 1:05:15replied that tomorrow he would show up for his first day back home. He
- 1:05:20thought his life would improve thanks to the income he had just found. Despite
- 1:05:27being a different job than everyone he had ever had, he was willing to
- 1:05:30give the maximum the next day. He woke up early and enlisted to start
- 1:05:38a new routine with a positive attitude. He went to the place where life
- 1:05:42and positivism were not so common. Even though the sun was in its utmost
- 1:05:45splendor, the shadows surrounded the place causing it to enter into a gloomy darkness.
- 1:05:51Pablo was received by the manager, gave him gloves, a robe,
- 1:05:58and a mouth cover. L took him to the ventuary brine, where he
- 1:06:00showed him the space where he could keep his things. Sitting on a bench,
- 1:06:04he was preparing for the working day, which would be a long one.
- 1:06:09He approached a mirror to look at himself, to mentalize that he was
- 1:06:14about to receive lifeless people. He gave a deep breath and rubbed his face
- 1:06:18intensely and left the locker room to go to the space where all the bodies
- 1:06:25remained prepared. Upon entering he met another person who was doing his work,
- 1:06:31a man focused on his work, ignoring anything around him, but who immediately
- 1:06:36noticed Paul' s arrival. He said that he had notified him about his
- 1:06:43arrival, and likewise, he told him that he was happy to have a
- 1:06:46companion. It had been a while since the last worker had resigned. The
- 1:06:54companion explained in detail the tasks he would have to perform, which would be
- 1:06:59to receive the body, to collect the data that the emergency bodies had received,
- 1:07:03as well as the details of the cause of death. Only that would
- 1:07:08do, as the companion would be in charge of reviewing further, as he
- 1:07:12had more advanced knowledge. Finally, he took him to another room, where
- 1:07:17there were several large compartments. Paul, analyzing each of them, asked for
- 1:07:24what these compartments were used for. The man replied that there they kept bodies
- 1:07:30that were not recognized. It was common for some to fail to be claimed
- 1:07:34by family members or someone else. Then they were stored there for a few
- 1:07:40days. If no one ever recognized him. Unfortunately, they were taken to
- 1:07:45the mass grave of the city cemetery to rest with the other deceased who were
- 1:07:49never claimed by their family They both returned to the room while teaching him all
- 1:07:57the material that would be used. An ambulance was heard to open its doors.
- 1:08:01Apparently, the first body of the day had arrived. Pablo got very
- 1:08:05nervous. He had thought of what he was going to see, but he
- 1:08:10likewise did not feel fully prepared. The man noticed his nerves and asked him
- 1:08:15to calm down. The body came covered with a white sheet. Paul,
- 1:08:21with his hands shaky slowly discovered it. The paramedics realized it was their first
- 1:08:27time in this field. As he uncovered it, he saw a body with
- 1:08:30a face of suffering, open eyes and a body full of wounds. He
- 1:08:36was totally shocked by what he had just seen. The paramedics said in the
- 1:08:41form of a joke and we already cleaned all the blood laughing, began to
- 1:08:45give the necessary information Pablo despite being shocked, did not want to look weak
- 1:08:51and seriously documented all the details provided as people involved family. What had happened.
- 1:09:00Apparently, the man had been violently murdered, as the marks on his
- 1:09:03body appeared to be of a sharp sharp object. Upon completion of collection,
- 1:09:11he proceeded to strip all the accessories and clothing that the person was wearing.
- 1:09:15Every toucher of the body felt completely cold and could not help but imagine that
- 1:09:20person standing behaving like a normal person alive. His companion asked him if the
- 1:09:28body was ready, as time progressed, it began its decomposition process. Paul
- 1:09:35took the stretcher to the man, who, normally, opened the parts where
- 1:09:40he had been stabbed. He was surprised that he treated the body as if
- 1:09:45it were a piece of meat that was about to be cooked. Noting Paul
- 1:09:48’ s surprise, he said that after doing this for years one gets used
- 1:09:54to it and loses sensitivity. He gave his conclusions and asked Paul to get
- 1:10:00in touch with the rust family. That had been his first body analyzed on
- 1:10:04his first day of work. Despite having witnessed very strong images, he managed
- 1:10:10to cope with it so he was ready to receive more bodies and continue his
- 1:10:15work with the following bodies arriving. Although it was hard for him to believe
- 1:10:21that they were lifeless people, he adapted little by little and during free times
- 1:10:27when there was no body to receive. Both workers held conversations about their lives
- 1:10:33and, as they had arrived there, a good working relationship was being built.
- 1:10:41The night was falling Paul' s shift was about to end. His
- 1:10:45companion told him that he had been very lucky to be assigned to the morning
- 1:10:49shift and not the morning shift. The other employees commented that during those hours
- 1:10:56the atmosphere felt even heavier. Less than an hour later when the ambulance arrived,
- 1:11:01the paramedics got out of the vehicle, but this time there was not
- 1:11:08a voice alone breaking in tears, resounding all over the place. It was
- 1:11:11a woman who suffered from that body. Paul, in haste, received the
- 1:11:15body and when he discovered it, understood why. That woman was crying in
- 1:11:19an inconsolable way. The body was of a small one who, according to
- 1:11:26witness statements for doctors and the mother, had been run over by a speeding
- 1:11:30car. The pain led her into the room, where Paul was. She
- 1:11:36threw herself over her son' s body to hold him tightly. Denying her
- 1:11:41loss, the workers tried to calm the woman, took her away from the
- 1:11:46body to get her out of the room. Paul was left with a heartbreaking
- 1:11:49image, a mother with her clothes stained with blood, completely weeping eyes and
- 1:11:56beside her, her son shattered by that Ur accident that took his life.
- 1:12:01A silence invaded the whole place for a moment, but a doorbell broke it.
- 1:12:06Paul’ s turn would have come to an end without words for what
- 1:12:10he had just witnessed. He left work on his way home. Days passed
- 1:12:15with time. The heartbreaking wounds and disfigured faces ceased to disturb Paul. Little
- 1:12:21by little. He became insensitive to the brutality of death, but within him
- 1:12:26there was still a feeling of empathy for the victims and the misfortunes lived.
- 1:12:31One night, the place was covered by darkness and silence. Not many bodies
- 1:12:36had arrived during the day. It had been a quiet day. Both partners
- 1:12:43were talking quietly. When a body finally arrived at the morgue. As John
- 1:12:47entered, his companion felt a strange feeling, a feeling he had not felt
- 1:12:55since the first day he had come to work. The paramedics put the body
- 1:13:00on the table. Paul approached more slowly than usual, a little shaky because
- 1:13:03of the sensation that came to him. Seeing that body come in. He
- 1:13:08discovered it delicately and every person who raised the sheet could feel a frosty skin
- 1:13:14through the cloth of the clothes the body wore. It was then that he
- 1:13:18discovered the body completely and found himself with the look of the corpse, which
- 1:13:23was very traumatic, since his eyes were open and staring forward, Paul had
- 1:13:28never seen a body that way. Normally all those who arrived had their eyes
- 1:13:35closed or abated with fear within him continues to do his job. I strip
- 1:13:42the body of his clothes. Another surprise came when he noticed that he had
- 1:13:45no signs of violence, no visible wound that could explain the cause of his
- 1:13:50death. A strange vibration enveloped the body that was transmitted to all people inside
- 1:13:58the room. Paul in ten the nr understand what was happening. He called
- 1:14:01his partner who had more knowledge so that he could draw some conclusions. He
- 1:14:08started to check his body, but he couldn' t understand either. They
- 1:14:13both turned to the paramedics for answers, but only received shrugs. They found
- 1:14:19him in the middle of the street, in front of a vacant lot the
- 1:14:25employees murmured. Some say that after he got off the ground, he fell
- 1:14:29unconscious, but we' re not sure what happened. The body was just
- 1:14:32there cold and without a soul claiming his name. The paramedics proceeded to leave
- 1:14:40leaving doubt about that man. The specialist, with the little information provided,
- 1:14:45decided that the body did not need to be opened. There are no signs
- 1:14:50of trauma or signs of violence. It' s like it just went off.
- 1:14:56He proceeded to cover him with the sheet and asked Paul to take him
- 1:14:59away to shelter him in one of the containers. He asked what would happen
- 1:15:03to him and they replied that they would wait a few days for someone to
- 1:15:09come to reclaim the body in another way, this would be sent to the
- 1:15:14mass grave of the cemetery. While writing the details of the body, he
- 1:15:17felt a strange feeling. He felt the presence of the corpse at his side,
- 1:15:23a cold and silent presence observing the filling of the leaf. At the
- 1:15:27same time, the body' s gaze came to his mind with its eyes
- 1:15:31wide open. He began to feel intimidated by that situation. He took the
- 1:15:36steel stretcher, where he rested his body to keep it. Upon entering the
- 1:15:41room, where the unrecognised corpses remained, he felt a great chill. That
- 1:15:46room was in complete darkness, only a very dim light that allowed at least
- 1:15:51to walk in the darkness. Silence took hold of the atmosphere and Paul,
- 1:15:58nervously at the a la a la a la, opened a compartment and did
- 1:16:00what he never thought he would carry a lifeless body so he could lock it
- 1:16:04up. Those moments were eternal for Paul. He closed the door of the
- 1:16:11compartment and rushed out of that room. Upon leaving he looked at his watch
- 1:16:15and realized that his turn was about to end, so he began to store
- 1:16:19all the material that had been used during the day. As the time of
- 1:16:25his departure arrived, the manager rushed in saying that that night he would have
- 1:16:30to cover the morning shift, since the other two employees would have left emergency
- 1:16:34and, likewise, his partner would have to accompany him to check a body
- 1:16:40outside the city, so he would be completely left alone in the morgue.
- 1:16:45When he heard those words, he felt a great hole in his stomach.
- 1:16:49He could not refuse such an order, for he needed that work. He
- 1:16:56took out all the necessary material again. His companion approached him and told him
- 1:17:00that, in case more bodies arrived, he would do his normal work,
- 1:17:03but then he would have to guard them in the compartments and the next day
- 1:17:09he would check them in detail. Both left the morgue, the doors were
- 1:17:15closed, and Paul was in complete solitude. Everything was going without any problems.
- 1:17:20While I was reading a newspaper. The ambulance tires were heard and the
- 1:17:25doors opened and the paramedics came down with a woman' s body. As
- 1:17:30they counted the details of the deceased, they realized that she was alone.
- 1:17:35They intended to stay with him longer so that he would not be alone in
- 1:17:41that place. However, his radios soon sounded, notifying that an emergency had
- 1:17:45to be taken care of, so they quickly left the place. He began
- 1:17:51to do his usual job of stripping the body of his objects and filling in
- 1:17:57the file. As he did so, he began to feel a strange section
- 1:18:00presence. It came from the room where they were guarding the bodies. It
- 1:18:04felt like someone was watching from the darkest part of the room, but decided
- 1:18:10to ignore that feeling. He continued to fill out the file. At the
- 1:18:15end, he knew the next thing he had to do, which filled him
- 1:18:18with a little fear to take that woman’ s body into the compartments.
- 1:18:24He started walking slowly, opened a compartment and put the woman' s body
- 1:18:29in. He left the room and as he was outside, he heard murmurs
- 1:18:33coming from the darkness, refused to look back and went on his way.
- 1:18:38He left the stretcher and went to the main room. The dream began to
- 1:18:43enter Paul' s body. Inside the waiting room he leaned on an armchair
- 1:18:46with the radio on to crash. His eyes closed slowly. After a few
- 1:18:54minutes he fell asleep. In that the radio began to have interference and even
- 1:18:59with its eyes closed. He looked at where the radio was and could see
- 1:19:03the figure of a man standing right in front of the radio, as if
- 1:19:09he was the one who was changing the station from the chair jump and opened
- 1:19:15his eyes completely, but there was no one and curiously, the radio returned
- 1:19:19to reproduce normally. He attributed that to his brain, which was still inactive
- 1:19:24due to sleep, he got up and started walking down the corridors to forget.
- 1:19:30As he walked through the lonely corridors, a strange vibrating took hold of
- 1:19:34him with every step he took, every time he walked further away from his
- 1:19:39work area. The murmurs were heard more and more loudly, as if someone
- 1:19:43were speaking in the distance the fear began to go into Paul. Silence and
- 1:19:48murmuring were terrifying. The chill ran through his body. He walked back to
- 1:19:56the living room, but the noises didn' t stop. He was about
- 1:19:59to enter the room, from where they came with fear and trembling hands.
- 1:20:03He took the cold door handle and when he was about to turn it open,
- 1:20:08the paramedics entered with one more body. He calmed down a bit,
- 1:20:14he wouldn' t have to go into the room alone anymore, but the
- 1:20:17paramedics left anyway. Paul was again in the same situation, only in the
- 1:20:23fourth, accompanied by a lifeless body. He did not let fear intimidate him
- 1:20:28and began to strip him of his belongings. As the murmurs did, they
- 1:20:32began to hear in the room, where the bodies were guarded. Paul looked
- 1:20:38quickly toward that direction, but he was only in complete darkness. He continued
- 1:20:44to do his job and again came the feeling that someone was close. From
- 1:20:48there. He tried to keep calm, but could not accommodate the body to
- 1:20:54be covered and taken to the container room. While touching the cold skin of
- 1:20:59the body, it was heard as someone opened a container. He immediately reacted
- 1:21:04and stared, trying to figure out what was going on. He found something
- 1:21:09terrifying. The shadow of a man standing in the middle of the darkness was
- 1:21:14startled and what made him react was that he felt the body' s hand
- 1:21:17sliding over his frightened arm turned and looked at the corpse, which had its
- 1:21:24eyes wide open. But in a second he went from looking out into nowhere
- 1:21:28to staring at Paul. He covered the body with the sheet and in fear
- 1:21:32inside him, rushed to take it to the container. Upon entering, the
- 1:21:35rims of the stretcher gnashed even more intensely, rumbling throughout the room. When
- 1:21:42he turned on the lights, he realized that one of the containers was open.
- 1:21:46It was the mystery man' s container full of fear. He looked
- 1:21:50around. When he turned around, he found face to face with that corpse,
- 1:21:55just as he had seen it last time. Paul vanished. When he
- 1:22:00reacted, he was in a completely dark and cold place. He was motionless
- 1:22:04and felt something squeezed him and he wouldn' t let him move. With
- 1:22:09much effort he managed to jidar his head and saw the face of the corpse
- 1:22:13with open eyes and a long smile. Paul tried to move to ask for
- 1:22:17help, but it was useless. His fate was sealed. It was to
- 1:22:23die there because of the lack of air and end up next to that corpse
- 1:22:27inside the mass grave. Stories written and adapted by Andrea Lezama
