- 0:01So a story out of the WNBA just minutes ago from ESPNWNBA
- 0:08reporter Alexa Filipov. Kathy Engelbert, who many
- 0:16thought was going to retire after this season, is officially
- 0:22calling it a career as commissioner after this WNBA
- 0:27season. Well really, the playoffs are
- 0:31over. All I have to say in regards to
- 0:34that. Thank fucking God she is retired
- 0:42now. I want to be, you know, point
- 0:46this out on one man. She's actually, believe it or
- 0:50not, the first legitimate commissioner in WNBA history.
- 0:57Now I know what you're thinking. Well, the week has been around
- 0:59for over 3 decades. How is that possible?
- 1:03Here's the answer. The previous ones, they were
- 1:08century presidents of the league.
- 1:12They never really had transitioned to commissioners.
- 1:17There wasn't one at the time, but in May of 2019, Engelbert
- 1:22was the first legitimate commissioner in week history.
- 1:29And today, according to Alexa Filipov, she is officially
- 1:34retiring following seven years. And we're just like with
- 1:43anybody, you know, for a lot of the successors, there was also
- 1:50the criticism that falls in. Engelbert is no exception and
- 2:01well, let's just highlight some of her successes in her seven
- 2:06years as the full time commissioner.
- 2:13Look, was she key as far as transferring the league, along
- 2:20with several other prominent players, into a more prominent
- 2:24league and even rising as far as his entertainment purposes?
- 2:30Absolutely. I mean, let's not really forget
- 2:35about that. She's also foreseen a
- 2:40transformation of the business aspect of it.
- 2:44Not this offseat past offseason worth standing, but the media
- 2:50spec rights as far as you know the different networks, it's
- 2:54going up 3.1 close to 3.2 billion and after the season's
- 2:59over the season will go up to 50 games and by a couple years
- 3:08later 18 markets will officially be by 20-30 after 12 franchises
- 3:19over the past few decades. And of course she first
- 3:27introduced the comprehensive revenue sharing model in all of
- 3:31women's professional sports. Now, that's just a few of the
- 3:41good that she has done over her seven years at the helm as
- 3:48commissioner, but now it's time for the criticisms.
- 3:56Look, it's no secret that within the past year and two, Engelbert
- 4:01has come under fire for her in a lot of cases, lack of leadership
- 4:08and how she has really handled how things have gone as far as
- 4:12the league is concerned. Once this prominent name is
- 4:16current Minnesota star in the Pisa Collier that last year
- 4:21after Minnesota season was over, she said that Engelbert had been
- 4:26neglected and not so long about her role as commissioner of the
- 4:33WNBA. And she even said, quote, UN
- 4:36quote, that the league had the worst leadership in the world.
- 4:42Yes and look like most people in life, you know when you kind of
- 4:50get that, unfortunately Monica said about you, you do what you
- 4:59gotta do to kind of clean up your image, right?
- 5:02I think we all would, but unfortunately that was just the
- 5:05first of many dominoes to come. But after those explosive
- 5:15remarks from Collier, there were many Board of Governors even
- 5:20around the WNBA that just were not a fan of Engelbert
- 5:25personally. Many sources, according to ESPN,
- 5:30told them that she just never was able to develop sustained
- 5:36relationships with either the owners of teams, the general
- 5:40managers of basketball OPS or presidents, whatever.
- 5:46And certainly when it came to the players, that was more
- 5:50evident and were, notwithstanding the myriad of
- 5:57nonsensical bullshit as far as you know, pushing for trans
- 6:02rights, kids trans rights. I'm sorry, Caitlin Clark and
- 6:09Sophie Cunningham being never any targets of scrutiny by many
- 6:17opposition, including different fan bases.
- 6:22The league. For me, that case, fighting for
- 6:26recognition, respect and really equal alignment as far as, you
- 6:33know, the WNWNBA is concerned and, you know, trying to be on
- 6:41par with the NBA and other professional sports.
- 6:47And not to mention the fact that within league circles at that
- 6:50time, many behavior from fans to players, even officials
- 7:03essentially giving the players to proverbial middle finger.
- 7:07A lot of people say it's been problematic the last really two
- 7:10years and that, you know, at a certain point you have to close
- 7:19ranks and something's gonna give.
- 7:21Cause eventually, if you don't ultimately find a way that kind
- 7:26of bridge the problem, it's only going to get worse until it
- 7:31actually spills out. Now, when speculation came
- 7:37around that Engelbert had considered stepping down even
- 7:41before the story became official from Alexa Philipov today,
- 7:46Engelbert told The Associated Press that, look, this was my
- 7:51decision. I just feel like it's time to
- 7:54step down and let somebody else take the helm as commissioner.
- 8:00But she vehemently denied that as far as, you know,
- 8:04shareholders of WNBA clubs and even some NBA ones, that despite
- 8:12whatever may have been said about her leadership style or
- 8:17what's been said about her, none of those outside forces
- 8:23propelled her to walk away after this year.
- 8:27Playoffs are finally over. Now I'm just going to say this.
- 8:40Do I actually believe that Engelbert, when she said that,
- 8:45look, I didn't feel any pressure from the outside as far as, you
- 8:49know, within the league or the NBA, or for many people that
- 8:54questioned her leadership style. To be quite honest with you, I
- 9:03actually don't because let's put it this way, if you were someone
- 9:10that was feeling the heat for many people from around the
- 9:15league, 'cause remember, the NBA is essentially been really the
- 9:20forefront to support the dollar NBA.
- 9:22So it's kind of like both leagues essentially.
- 9:25So it's like if you've been feeling the heat from both
- 9:29leagues for many players, shareholders and even general
- 9:36managers and personnel around week circles and certainly from
- 9:42the media that have questioned you know the type of job you're
- 9:47doing, the real you are or aren't pushing nonsensical BS
- 9:55which isn't needed and even the media is essentially questioning
- 10:01your jobs situation. Calling me crazy but I really
- 10:08have a hard time believing that other outside factors did not
- 10:13factor in Engelbert finally stepping down into the seas.
- 10:18But that's just me in the end, look to much of her credit for
- 10:26in the way making the WNBA where it is now.
- 10:31There has been a lot more criticism the past couple years
- 10:34than successors. And look, I'm not here to say
- 10:41that, you know, it was about time, but you kind of heard me
- 10:47say that, you know, Thank God she's stepping down at the end
- 10:51of the season with Tyler because look, I just got this sense from
- 10:57a distance that I felt she had overstayed her position for far
- 11:04too long. And it's not really because of,
- 11:07again, the more so critical factors, which has put the rake
- 11:11on fire, you know, as a whole. But it's like, remember this
- 11:20past offseason when I said that, you know, when the CBA
- 11:25negotiations were ongoing, that there have been, you know,
- 11:30speculation that there might not even have been the season this
- 11:34year until they finally got something done?
- 11:38I remember sitting back and thinking, you know, the league
- 11:44has essentially been around for almost 30 years all around that,
- 11:52and there have been many prominent players, coaches that
- 11:59at once made the league actually a little better than I think
- 12:03people gave a credit for back then.
- 12:06Regardless, whoever was, you know, the president at the time,
- 12:10'cause remember, it wasn't until 2019 that Engelbert was actually
- 12:14named the full time commissioner by name.
- 12:19But it just seemed like, at least for me, the last couple
- 12:23years, despite, you know, expansion of different
- 12:27franchises, upping up to 18 teams within a few years, the
- 12:34entertainment value of it, how the league is almost around 3.2
- 12:40billion. Despite all that, I felt that
- 12:45Engelbert has essentially turned what was a good enough league
- 12:51into in some ways a a sideshow. And quite frankly, this entire
- 12:58season, which I'm not going to break down because you can
- 13:02pretty much see why that is the case.
- 13:06See, a century has turned it into a sideshow of crunch worthy
- 13:13nonsense. Did you just have to sit back
- 13:16and say how did it get to this point?
- 13:22Unfortunately, this is again, by and large the result of the
- 13:29masses trying to stick their nose into something that quite
- 13:34frankly, they have no business doing.
- 13:36But in a society like ruin, everyone feels like they have to
- 13:40essentially stick their nose into something that's none of
- 13:44their business. And yes, I mean liberals and
- 13:49miserable lunatics and ruin everything, but that's besides
- 13:54the point. So look, as far as the WNBA
- 13:58future going forward, I really have no idea who will be the
- 14:02next commissioner. One thing I do know for sure,
- 14:07and this is actually me being kind, they will have their work
- 14:13cut out for them because whoever it will be hope that they can
- 14:21actually make the WNBA into what it's supposed to be.
- 14:27Was supposed to be just a sports league.
- 14:31I can, you know, maybe accept a little entertainment just for
- 14:35the sake of fun, but nothing else.
- 14:39None of that, you know, trans ideology bullshit, you know,
- 14:44officials going after players or even coaches and just be
- 14:51regularly. I don't think that's really too
- 14:54much to ask.
