- 0:54Speaker 2: to stay.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Let's get raping to the business. What up, y'all? I
- 0:59Speaker 1: am your host?
- 0:59Speaker 2: Big isn't this It's hip Hop Now podcast podcast specifically
- 1:04Speaker 2: designed to keep you caught up on all things hip
- 1:07Speaker 2: hop music and culture that happened throughout the week. Big
- 1:11Speaker 2: shout out to those who have been listening for ten years.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And let me just clarify the whole ten year anniversary thing, right.
- 1:17Speaker 1: This podcast has kind of been.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Around a little bit longer than that, but I think
- 1:23Speaker 2: in the very beginning, when I first started doing this podcast,
- 1:27Speaker 2: it was more so of a test. But in twenty
- 1:32Speaker 2: sixteen was when I started to really get into it.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying and really take it serious.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So shout out to those who subscribed originally on SoundCloud,
- 1:46Speaker 2: because probably around twenty sixteen is when I started to
- 1:51Speaker 2: make sure the podcast was available on other platforms, but
- 1:55Speaker 2: at one point it was only SoundCloud.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So that's what I mean.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Ten year anniversary for you know, people being able to
- 2:03Speaker 2: discover the audio version of this podcast wherever you listen
- 2:07Speaker 2: to your podcast. Big shout out to those who watch
- 2:10Speaker 2: on YouTube. Yes you also hold up, I ain't turn
- 2:13Speaker 2: my light on real quick because the light is kind
- 2:14Speaker 2: of crazy and boone, we got light.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But shout out to YouTube.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You know, people subscribing on YouTube, whether you came here
- 2:22Speaker 2: because of the shorts that you like, the special content,
- 2:26Speaker 2: or the weekly podcast like this one hip Hop Now podcast,
- 2:31Speaker 2: the news, news and perspective. So with that being said,
- 2:35Speaker 2: we're gonna get right into it. Big shout out to
- 2:38Speaker 2: hip Hop dx dot.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Com and the rest is all me.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Let's do it. So I don't have no materials, nothing
- 2:51Speaker 2: like that. I'm not gonna do that. But if you
- 2:54Speaker 2: don't know, if you've been living under a rock or
- 2:57Speaker 2: an iceberg or something like that. Drake has been teasing
- 3:02Speaker 2: his next solo album right not the collaborative joints that
- 3:06Speaker 2: he's released, but his next drake solo Iceman, right, And
- 3:12Speaker 2: he's had a number of rollouts, many of which have
- 3:16Speaker 2: fallen flat for whatever reason, timing or whatever. But now
- 3:25Speaker 2: it's supposed to be official. He put up like this
- 3:29Speaker 2: big ass ice block in Toronto that the Drake stands
- 3:34Speaker 2: was licking and climbing on and the police had to
- 3:37Speaker 2: be like, hey, man, get down from it. Like it's ice.
- 3:40Speaker 2: It's going to get slippery and get sliced open. All
- 3:42Speaker 2: kinds of crazy stuff, just stupid. But also I think
- 3:48Speaker 2: within the ice was the release date. Now what's kind
- 3:52Speaker 2: of whack about that is, you know you had to
- 3:55Speaker 2: wait for the ice to melt, but the release day
- 3:58Speaker 2: leaked before the ice actually melted leak, you know, so
- 4:03Speaker 2: we already knew it was going to be the fifteenth
- 4:05Speaker 2: before the revealed. So the rollouts has just been terrible, right,
- 4:10Speaker 2: And a lot of it has to do.
- 4:13Speaker 1: With him just.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Being married to what happened to him in the battle.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And I really feel like it reminds me of j
- 4:24Speaker 2: Cole talking about the battle, and I know he's doing
- 4:28Speaker 2: interviews and I know people wanted to know in depth
- 4:30Speaker 2: because he never provided an opportunity for them to ask
- 4:33Speaker 2: questions back when things were going down. But with Drake,
- 4:39Speaker 2: he don't want to let it go. So it's not
- 4:43Speaker 2: just about Kendrick. It's about anybody who aligned himself with him,
- 4:49Speaker 2: including him like having words about doctor Dre because he
- 4:53Speaker 2: was like I see that people at the pop out.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And it's.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Is just like J Cole, Like J Cole put out
- 5:03Speaker 2: a good double album. To me, it was a good
- 5:06Speaker 2: double album. He put that joint out to fall off.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Most people were kind of, you know, letting him live.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And then he started doing interviews and trying to like
- 5:16Speaker 2: do do poor shit like I don't know, Ayane James, y'all,
- 5:21Speaker 2: yes you had and you're rich.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Okay, guess what you're rich. You have changed whether you
- 5:27Speaker 1: like it or not.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But it was it was again once he started doing
- 5:31Speaker 2: the interviews, it just reminded you of the l he
- 5:36Speaker 2: took in the battle and his explanations just increased people's
- 5:41Speaker 2: disdain for him, and not even from a just a
- 5:45Speaker 2: completely negative side, just feeling like he's not real okay,
- 5:51Speaker 2: And that's what it feels like with Drake. It's it's like,
- 5:54Speaker 2: come on, dog, just drop the album. I'm hearing all
- 5:58Speaker 2: of his cronies talk about how crazy it is going
- 6:01Speaker 2: to be and how the game needs Drake pun intended
- 6:07Speaker 2: because hip hop ain't the same, just all these things
- 6:10Speaker 2: and apologizing for him while he's actively suing over a
- 6:15Speaker 2: rap battle. What definition of hip hop? Y'all guy?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Right? But we all know what it's about.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Man.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's all about supporting somebody.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Who has a huge fan base, and it is taking
- 6:31Speaker 2: a hit, and I think he feels like he gotta
- 6:35Speaker 2: make this album.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Maybe it's like, all right, let me just air it
- 6:39Speaker 1: all out and that be that.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So to me, when it comes to Drake and all
- 6:47Speaker 2: these antics in the rollout, I don't care. If the
- 6:51Speaker 2: music just happens to be good, that's what should matter.
- 6:56Speaker 2: If it happens to be bad, so be it. But
- 6:59Speaker 2: it's really about what that music sounds like at this stage,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and I would love The only thing that's gonna be
- 7:07Speaker 2: of interest to most, whether they mess with Drake anymore
- 7:12Speaker 2: or not, is why are you suing in hip hop.
- 7:20Speaker 1: For a battle?
- 7:21Speaker 2: For a battle, specifically a battle that you were egging on,
- 7:26Speaker 2: a battle that you took to the next step of
- 7:32Speaker 2: you know, talking the deflammation basically right, and now you're
- 7:36Speaker 2: suing because of it. So it's one of those things
- 7:39Speaker 2: like if you're going to talk about it, okay, then why.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Are you doing this?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Tell us your rationale for why you're suing in this case,
- 7:47Speaker 2: and we'll just go from there. But it's for those
- 7:51Speaker 2: who's like, nah, man, I'm done with Drake, blah blah blah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's gonna be all over the timeline come May fifteen, unavoidable.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It just will be whether he drop a hot album,
- 8:03Speaker 2: whether he say the truth, whether he say something that
- 8:06Speaker 2: nobody believes that day, he will be the trending topic
- 8:11Speaker 2: watch next the same. So a couple of like a
- 8:19Speaker 2: month or so ago, maybe two months ago, a guy
- 8:22Speaker 2: reached out to me from a promotions company asking if
- 8:27Speaker 2: I would like to check out a book commemorating forty
- 8:32Speaker 2: years of run DMC's album Raising Hell. Twenty twenty six
- 8:38Speaker 2: is the fortieth anniversary of the album by run DMC,
- 8:43Speaker 2: Raising Hell, an album that Chuck d called the greatest
- 8:47Speaker 2: hip hop album of all time but also to me personally,
- 8:52Speaker 2: my favorite run dmc album. And you know, I've done
- 8:57Speaker 2: book reviews, but this one was a little bit different.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And I was, I was interested in it. So I'm
- 9:03Speaker 2: just gonna give y'all some brief information from directly from
- 9:06Speaker 2: the press release for those watching and listening, just to
- 9:11Speaker 2: show you how they some of this whole thing up right.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So Run DMC and Raising Hell forty years j Kwon's
- 9:20Speaker 2: definitive deep dive into the album that changed hip hop forever.
- 9:25Speaker 2: By the way, this album, this album, this book is
- 9:29Speaker 2: out right now. Forty years ago, Run DMC detonated the
- 9:33Speaker 2: boundaries between rap, rock and mainstream culture with Raising Hell,
- 9:38Speaker 2: a landmark album that reshaped music history and pushed hip
- 9:42Speaker 2: hop into the global spotlight. Now acclaimed hip hop historian
- 9:47Speaker 2: Jay Kwan delivers the ultimate tribute with Run DMC and
- 9:52Speaker 2: Raising Hell forty Years, a richly illustrated slipcase celebration of
- 9:59Speaker 2: the group's groundbreaking nineteen eighty six release. And they go
- 10:03Speaker 2: on to say a couple of other things. But here
- 10:07Speaker 2: are a few things that are inside the book, and
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'll show you the book for those watching the groups
- 10:12Speaker 2: rise from Queen's to national prominence. Track by track analysis
- 10:16Speaker 2: of both sides of Raising Hell. Both sides aha old school,
- 10:20Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. It's not the hit, the creative
- 10:24Speaker 2: partnership with producer Rick Rubin, the supporting tour, promotional push,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and cultural explosion that followed the group's evolution after the
- 10:34Speaker 2: album's massive success. Now, for those who don't know, they're
- 10:40Speaker 2: probably like, damn, that album did all of that. Yes,
- 10:43Speaker 2: Run DMC was large back in the day, like pick
- 10:46Speaker 2: anybody who you think is like okay, Like we just
- 10:49Speaker 2: discussed like Drake for hip hop, that was Run DMC.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Now here's the book. I did receive it. I did
- 10:57Speaker 2: check it out, and it's it's the perfect for those
- 11:01Speaker 2: who are watching and those that are listening. The link
- 11:04Speaker 2: to the video should be in a description so you
- 11:06Speaker 2: can check it out. But I thought the book just
- 11:11Speaker 2: on that alone, like it's it's nice, it's coffee table material,
- 11:18Speaker 2: content creator, background material.
- 11:22Speaker 1: It's just dope. Forty years Run DMC. I like that part.
- 11:26Speaker 2: But when you open this joint, this is when it
- 11:29Speaker 2: gets kind of dope. Look on the front rest in peace,
- 11:33Speaker 2: jam Master Jay, don't picture like that's hip hop. When
- 11:38Speaker 2: you used to stand like that back in the eighties,
- 11:40Speaker 2: you were saying we hip hop. Don't come overhead. You
- 11:44Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, stay over there and then on
- 11:47Speaker 2: the back it has them performing. You know what I'm
- 11:50Speaker 2: saying that the show which is dope. And you know, if.
- 11:54Speaker 1: You like read, I'll be doing no reading.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Okay, well there are pictures for you. That's what illustrations means.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And these pictures are like epic this is and I'm
- 12:08Speaker 2: gonna just skip around. We ain't going through the whole book,
- 12:11Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Like some photos like I've
- 12:13Speaker 2: never seen this one before, at least I don't think,
- 12:15Speaker 2: so that's a dope photo. And you know it's different
- 12:20Speaker 2: chapters in here from Queens Come Kings Run DMC before
- 12:24Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six, another section Bad meaning good Side one
- 12:31Speaker 2: Lasting and Live one DMC after Raising Him.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And it's just a it's just a very dope book. Man.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Photos, you know, information. It looked like I've just been
- 12:42Speaker 2: showing photos, but look information.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You know you see that.
- 12:47Speaker 2: The god curtains blow the brakes, the DMX, not that
- 12:52Speaker 2: DMX I'm talking about. You see it right there, equipment
- 12:56Speaker 2: to create hip hop. This is a very dope book.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I like when it came in the packaging. First of all,
- 13:04Speaker 2: shout out to j Quorn for putting this together. Who
- 13:08Speaker 2: I guess if y'all wanted to see me do an interview,
- 13:11Speaker 2: we can, because I was lined up to do an interview,
- 13:14Speaker 2: but then a brother got busy, you know, like not
- 13:17Speaker 2: too busy for hip hop, but I just got busy.
- 13:20Speaker 2: But shout out to j Kun for that book and
- 13:24Speaker 2: his publisher for sending it to me. Is very dope book.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I didn't even want to take it out the plastic
- 13:29Speaker 2: because I was like, Yo, this is such a dope
- 13:33Speaker 2: piece that I'd rather just be unopened, Like I, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 2: maybe I'll buy another one that's rapped and then just
- 13:41Speaker 2: had that and get this one away. But do I
- 13:45Speaker 2: recommend it? Yeah, this is who I recommend that book too.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Those who whether you be, if you're if you're from
- 13:55Speaker 2: that time and you remember Raising Hell and Run DMC
- 14:00Speaker 2: and what that album did back in the days for
- 14:02Speaker 2: you as a hip hop fan in the club and
- 14:04Speaker 2: all that stuff. This is for you if you're a
- 14:09Speaker 2: person who loves collecting, you know, memorabilia and you know,
- 14:15Speaker 2: just collecting hip hop things like this is a dope book.
- 14:18Speaker 2: This is almost like a must have if you asked me,
- 14:20Speaker 2: because Raising Hell was a huge album, like Walk This
- 14:23Speaker 2: Way is on it that was huge for run DMC,
- 14:26Speaker 2: a huge crossover record.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But when you listen to the album, run DMC has.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Always been a little hip hop and a little rock
- 14:34Speaker 2: and mixed together, you know, working with Rick, I was
- 14:37Speaker 2: gonna say Rick Ross with Rick Rubin before jay Z Shorty.
- 14:43Speaker 1: This is just a very awesome dope book.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Now how much it costs fifty dollars, I think it's
- 14:57Speaker 2: worth it. I think it's worth it. Like you see
- 15:01Speaker 2: how you see how like you see this book. This
- 15:03Speaker 2: ain't no small paperback book. This is this is premium
- 15:08Speaker 2: it costs, So I definitely recommend it for hip hop
- 15:12Speaker 2: heads who not only like history and reading about these
- 15:16Speaker 2: things and seeing the photos and stuff like that, but
- 15:19Speaker 2: also if you just want to have it as a
- 15:21Speaker 2: part of, you know, decoration in your man cave or
- 15:24Speaker 2: whatever it may be.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And lastly same.
- 15:31Speaker 2: So for March, I didn't really get to say what
- 15:35Speaker 2: were the top albums and projects, so I waited until
- 15:39Speaker 2: April finish so I could give you a few. And
- 15:41Speaker 2: one of the reasons why I didn't do a March
- 15:44Speaker 2: like rundown of the best projects was because there was.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Only one or two.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Really one because the other one after listening a while,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I was like this, this is okay whatever, and that's
- 15:58Speaker 2: Kanye's bully. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna
- 16:02Speaker 2: tell you about the best album releases mixtape releases for
- 16:08Speaker 2: the month of March and April twenty twenty six. Let's
- 16:12Speaker 2: start right off the top with Easy Money in DJ
- 16:16Speaker 2: Manipulator zero one eight three zero, which is the zip
- 16:20Speaker 2: code ways from a very dope album. You know, again,
- 16:25Speaker 2: it sounds generic to say beats and bars, but when
- 16:30Speaker 2: I say beats and bars, I'm really just talking about
- 16:34Speaker 2: good solid hip hop, right, not offensive, not to wordplayed,
- 16:41Speaker 2: not to gangster, just An MC and the DJ Slash
- 16:46Speaker 2: producer coming together to make something meaningful, That's what I mean,
- 16:51Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. And this album is Dad
- 16:53Speaker 2: features on here in Clue, Terminology, sky Zo Spoon, Digga,
- 16:57Speaker 2: Green Monster, and a couple of other people on here.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So uh, definitely check that one out next up.
- 17:06Speaker 2: And then, like I said before, we're skipping over that
- 17:08Speaker 2: Kanye joint because yeah, it was, alright, not best of
- 17:13Speaker 2: the month, Husk Kingpin Waveo Forever. This is an album
- 17:18Speaker 2: that is one thousand percent dedicated to Wu Tang clan
- 17:22Speaker 2: like Wu Tang Forever, but also features Wu Tang clan,
- 17:28Speaker 2: so he does like his own rendition of certain Wu
- 17:33Speaker 2: Tang songs, but not like Cream two or Cream twenty
- 17:37Speaker 2: twenty six. It's like you you recognize the samples, you
- 17:41Speaker 2: recognize things about the songs, but they're still huss Kingpin.
- 17:48Speaker 2: The lead single was Rizza Fang's featuring Rizza give you
- 17:52Speaker 2: that sound, but it's songs of hey like ghost of
- 17:54Speaker 2: Came right, remember came ghost Face Joint Killer priests on here,
- 18:00Speaker 2: shahens on here as well, who else planning Asia is
- 18:03Speaker 2: on here ghost Face Killer. So I found this to
- 18:08Speaker 2: be a very dope concept album, especially for somebody like
- 18:12Speaker 2: myself who's a Wu Tang fan. And the special touch
- 18:17Speaker 2: is the fact Inspector deckx on here. Also the special
- 18:21Speaker 2: touch is the fact that he also got Wu Tang
- 18:25Speaker 2: members on the album, so it really just makes it
- 18:29Speaker 2: extra dope. Next up, we don't have that many because
- 18:33Speaker 2: it was the past two months was kind of crazy.
- 18:36Speaker 2: But he's a surprise. This thing of ours exhibit be
- 18:41Speaker 2: real of Cypress Hill and Demrick.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think that's how you say his name. Uh, they're
- 18:46Speaker 1: going by.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Serial killers and it's called This Thing of Ours and
- 18:51Speaker 2: it starts off with a song called serial Killer Anthem.
- 18:55Speaker 1: And when I heard that, I was like, who this joint? Hard?
- 18:59Speaker 1: I like this?
- 19:00Speaker 2: And those reactions continued as I listened more and more.
- 19:06Speaker 1: A gang.
- 19:07Speaker 2: So this album is really dope, hardcore hip hop. I
- 19:12Speaker 2: could say West Coast, but I feel like it's not
- 19:15Speaker 2: even like a West Coast sounding album. It's just hip hop.
- 19:20Speaker 2: And when I say you are surprised by the number
- 19:25Speaker 2: of bangers on here, like you probably shouldn't be, but
- 19:28Speaker 2: you know, exhibiting Cypress Hill. They're not brand new artists,
- 19:32Speaker 2: but man, this combination. I just didn't anticipate this album
- 19:36Speaker 2: being this dope. I figured it might be dope, That's
- 19:39Speaker 2: why I checked it out, But it's better than I
- 19:42Speaker 2: thought it would be. And the last project is one
- 19:47Speaker 2: that dropped towards the end of April that I really
- 19:51Speaker 2: like a lot. Bluing Exile Time heals everything. I'm gonna
- 19:56Speaker 2: just say this, Blueing Exile do not have a wack
- 20:01Speaker 2: project together. They never miss It's always good. It's like
- 20:05Speaker 2: wholesome hip hop. You know what I'm saying. You know
- 20:07Speaker 2: when you tie the fast food. And even though I
- 20:10Speaker 2: love that right. This is the type of hip hop
- 20:13Speaker 2: that reminds you that rappers can talk about whatever they
- 20:17Speaker 2: want to talk about. That's basically when you listen to
- 20:20Speaker 2: a Blue and Exile albums like you, it's free reigns.
- 20:24Speaker 2: You can talk about whatever, the neighborhood, drugs, the economy, whatever, love,
- 20:30Speaker 2: whatever you want to talk about.
- 20:34Speaker 1: This album is just good. Now is it going to
- 20:36Speaker 1: be like top five for me? I don't know.
- 20:38Speaker 2: It depends on how the year goes. But as far
- 20:41Speaker 2: as like solid hip hop that you know that that's
- 20:46Speaker 2: like comfortable, you know, chill still got the boom back
- 20:51Speaker 2: missing it not too hardcore, not soft, It's like a
- 20:55Speaker 2: perfect combination. I think like Blue and Exile just have
- 20:58Speaker 2: the chemistry to make those kinds of albums. So there
- 21:02Speaker 2: you have it, the best albums of March and April
- 21:06Speaker 2: twenty twenty six. What are some of the albums you've.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Been listening to in those months? Leave your comments in
- 21:13Speaker 1: a comments section below. Also, let us let me.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Know about the book you like, the one DMC book
- 21:17Speaker 2: thinking about buying it?
- 21:18Speaker 1: Let me know. And also Drake Iceman care don't care?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Curious about how he talks about you know, suing for
- 21:30Speaker 2: a battle rap. Leave your comments in a comment section below.
