- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. I've had Parkinson's for 15
- 0:35years and my doctor has never once told me what stage I'm in.
- 0:38Not once. And you know what?
- 0:41That might actually be a good thing.
- 0:43If you've ever found yourself wondering what stage am I in?
- 0:46Or hearing others talk about being in stage 2 or 4 or the
- 0:50early stage and you're feeling confused or left out.
- 0:53We'll stick around because today we're going to break down the
- 0:55five official Parkinson's stages and why your doctor might never
- 0:59bring them up and why they don't always reflect what you're
- 1:02actually going through. Well, welcome to the channel.
- 1:06I want to thank my loyal viewers for always sticking with me.
- 1:09And if you're new here, my name is Bryce.
- 1:10And this is living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 1:12and the reality. And this is doing life today.
- 1:15And our channel is all about providing strength and hope and
- 1:17support to individuals living with Parkinson's disease and
- 1:21their caregivers. You know, I share motivational
- 1:23stories, tips, and real talk to help you navigate life with
- 1:26Parkinson's. And if that sounds like what you
- 1:28need, then go ahead and subscribe because today's
- 1:30episode is a big one. Why?
- 1:33My doctor never told me what Parkinson's stage I'm in in 15
- 1:38years. And I want to get right into it.
- 1:41So when people talk about Parkinson's stages, they're
- 1:44usually referring to something called the Hohn and Yar scale.
- 1:47And it was developed in 1967. And it breaks Parkinson's down
- 1:51into 5 stages, mostly based on motor symptoms.
- 1:54And let's go through them quickly.
- 1:55OK, stage 1 symptoms on one side of the body might be a tremor,
- 2:00slightly slight stiffness, pretty mild overall.
- 2:03OK, stage 1. Stage 2 symptoms on both sides,
- 2:07but still fully independent. Stage 3, Balance issues begin.
- 2:12You might have some falls, but you're still walking and you're
- 2:15functioning on your own. OK.
- 2:17Stage 4 Things get more limiting though.
- 2:20You may still walk, but daily tasks become harder.
- 2:24OK And stage 5, You likely at this stage need a wheelchair or
- 2:28assistance to stand and move safely.
- 2:30OK, now that's the textbook version.
- 2:33But as you know, and if you've been with me and watched any
- 2:36other broadcast, you know Parkinson's doesn't live in a
- 2:40textbook. Now, let's be honest.
- 2:42Some days I feel like I'm on stage one.
- 2:44I'm moving and I'm filming and I'm grooving, right?
- 2:47Other days I freeze up in the hallway with one sock on, a
- 2:50spoonful of peanut butter in my hand, and a blank stare.
- 2:53It's like I forgot what year it was.
- 2:55Parkinson's isn't linear. It's not like you move from one
- 2:58clean stage to the next like chapters in a book.
- 3:01It's more like, well, if you remember those old CD players
- 3:05that would randomly skip tracks while you're listening to them,
- 3:08that's Parkinson's, right? You're listening to track 3 and
- 3:11suddenly it's like, surprise, you're on track 9.
- 3:13And I was going to hum a few bars, but you'd, you'd probably
- 3:16flip the stage, flip the channel.
- 3:18But one morning, you know, I feel like I'm 40 again.
- 3:21The afternoon I feel like I'm 90 and nothing changes but time and
- 3:26the tension in my neck, right? That's the only thing.
- 3:28The only difference is time. So why don't most doctors talk
- 3:33to you about what stage you're in?
- 3:35Well, there's a simple answer. Because it doesn't.
- 3:37Because it's not actually that helpful.
- 3:41Let me say that again. Why are some doctors not talking
- 3:44about it? And why don't I ask people?
- 3:46Or why don't I talk about it? Because it really is not
- 3:48helpful. You know, I once asked my
- 3:50neurologist, he is he, I once asked my neurologist if he
- 3:54thought I was at stage 3. And this is what he said.
- 3:56He looked at me and he said this Bryce, I treat the person in
- 3:59front of me, not the stage that they're supposed to be in.
- 4:02And that stuck with me. Most neurologist today don't use
- 4:05staging in everyday conversation.
- 4:07And, and here's the reasons why. Because number one, it doesn't
- 4:10account for non motor symptoms like sleep issues and cognitive
- 4:13changes or mood #2 it doesn't guide treatment all that well.
- 4:19And #3 it can be emotionally discouraging for a patient, you
- 4:24know, especially if you're somebody, you know, someone who
- 4:27hear someone who hears this like you're stage 4 right?
- 4:30And think that means that they're beyond hope, which isn't
- 4:32true. Like I'm in stage 4.
- 4:33Oh my God, there's only 5 stages.
- 4:35I've got one year left. What am I going to do, you know?
- 4:37And, and it's, I'm done. So let's talk through that.
- 4:43If doctors don't bring it up, then why do we talk about it so
- 4:46much in the Parkinson's community, right?
- 4:48You know why? Because it gives, it gives us a
- 4:51sense of, of location. It's a reference point, a way to
- 4:54measure where we think we are. It's a form of control in
- 4:58disease, in a disease that totally that feels totally
- 5:01uncontrollable, but it also creates comparison and sometimes
- 5:05even judgement. You know, I once got a comment
- 5:08that said, you say you've been, you say you've had Parkinson's
- 5:10for 15 years. Well, you don't look like you're
- 5:12in stage 5, except like, credibility depended on being
- 5:17visibly worse, right? Listen, no one gets a trophy for
- 5:20advancing faster. Parkinson's progression is not a
- 5:24competition. I hope I didn't step on some
- 5:28toes with that. But let me ask you this.
- 5:30Has your doctor ever told you what stage you're in?
- 5:33Right in the comments. If if you hit first, first
- 5:36question in the comments, did your has your doctor ever told
- 5:39you what stage you're in? Again, 15 years in not one time
- 5:42has my doctor ever told me what stage I'm in.
- 5:44But I want to know has your doctor told you?
- 5:47And then I want you to do this. End the comment.
- 5:49Yes, yes or no? But yes, my doctors told me no,
- 5:51my hat. No, he hasn't.
- 5:52OK, now listen, this is your next comment.
- 5:55Was it helpful or just confusing?
- 5:59Drop it in the comments. I remember I read every single
- 6:02comment. I reply and read to every
- 6:03comment. So let's get a conversation
- 6:05started. I want to know.
- 6:06Maybe I'm all by myself out here.
- 6:07Maybe I'm by myself, but let me know.
- 6:09Drop it in the comments. OK?
- 6:11Now what should we focus on instead?
- 6:15Instead of chasing a stage, I'd rather focus on this.
- 6:18How am I feeling today? Are my meds still working?
- 6:22What's getting harder lately? What can I still do on my own?
- 6:26And what do I need help with? OK, these are the questions that
- 6:31lead to action to better care. Now, if you weren't paying
- 6:34attention and he said what leads to action to better care, go
- 6:36back, just rewind and listen to it again because that's what
- 6:38leads to action. OK, not a number, not a label,
- 6:43but a conversation. If you want to talk to your
- 6:46doctor, ask this. What symptoms should I be
- 6:48watching more closely? What changes if my function
- 6:52matters most right now, right? What changes in function matters
- 6:56motor? Oh my God, I'm getting fired up
- 6:59here. Can you tell that?
- 6:59Give me a like for that one. What changes in motor matter
- 7:04most right now? That's far more useful than what
- 7:08stage am I in? Don't waste your hey, listen,
- 7:11you go once every six months for what, 30 minutes?
- 7:13Don't waste your 30 minutes trying to figure out what stage
- 7:15you're in. OK?
- 7:16You know, actually it was funny because Carmen and I were
- 7:18talking about this this exact episode while we're eating
- 7:21dinner the other night, you know, and well, I guess I was
- 7:23eating. She she was watching me drop my
- 7:25fork all the time for the third time.
- 7:27It was crazy. It was ridiculous.
- 7:28And we were just going to go with like, do you think you're
- 7:30in stage 3? Right?
- 7:31We can. She finally kind of said, and I
- 7:32said I looked at her. I said like, honestly, I think
- 7:34that I'm in the hold the wall while you pee stage.
- 7:39She smiled and said good morning.
- 7:41So morning, Bryce. I said exactly.
- 7:43OK. Like, that's what it What's it
- 7:45matter? With Parkinson's, stages might
- 7:48try to define you, but your spirit doesn't have to follow
- 7:52the script. Think about that.
- 7:55You don't have to. Who cares?
- 7:56I'm in stage 5. I'm doomed.
- 7:58I'm finished. No, you're not.
- 7:59No, you're not. How?
- 8:01Ask the doctor. How long does stage 5 last?
- 8:03Oh yeah. And does it last that long for
- 8:04everybody? We're all different.
- 8:06Remember that? We're snowflakes, right?
- 8:07We're all different. Everybody's a bit different.
- 8:10So there's no comparison here. It really doesn't matter what
- 8:13stage you're at. So if your doctors never
- 8:15mentioned your stage, then don't panic.
- 8:17And that doesn't mean you're being ignored it.
- 8:19It might mean your care is more personalized than you realize.
- 8:23Think of that one. Because you are not your stage.
- 8:27You are not your worst day. You are not a number on a scale
- 8:31from one to five. You're a human being doing your
- 8:33best. And that's more than enough
- 8:37there. Now, if this episode gave you
- 8:38something to think about or even made you laugh or made you fired
