Latest / The Daily Writer / Audio Journal: Just Hit Publish
Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I recently did an interview with my friend Steve Sponseller here on the podcast.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe you heard it from a couple weeks ago.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Steve is an intellectual property attorney, and he just released his first book, which is all about patents.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Now that's a very niche kind of a topic, but in the conversation on that podcast, we talked about why many people don't finish their books and why they don't put their writing out there.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And I think one of the hardest things to do for us as writers is to take our work and we put it out there for others to experience.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: In fact, one of the greatest things that Steve said on that episode was that a book that's sitting on your computer hard drive doesn't get to bless anybody.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It doesn't really do anybody any good if it's just sitting there as a digital file and nobody can read it or experience it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And man, that is so, so true.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: How oftentimes do we create something and then we we hesitate in publishing it?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've had that experience before, but I certainly have.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I have this experience on this podcast where I record an episode, or even sometimes on these little short audio journal episodes, I'll make something and then I'll hesitate to hit publish because I'm just a little bit concerned that it's not good enough, that somebody won't like it, or that somehow it's just not what it needs to be.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And I want to encourage you today, as you create content, to just hit publish.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Nothing we ever do is going to be perfect.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It's actually pretty rare for us to create something that doesn't have at least one minor flaw in it somewhere.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So go ahead and hit publish today.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: There's somebody who needs to hear what you have to say.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a blog post, maybe it's a podcast episode, maybe it's a social media post, maybe it's a book that, you know, just like Steve mentioned, maybe it's a book that's sitting there on your hard drive and you haven't published it and you haven't given people the opportunity to be blessed by it.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: If you've written something and you believe in it, if you think it's going to help people, then you have a moral obligation to put it out there into the world.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And so much of the time, we let perfectionism get in the way.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Perfectionism is just another word for ego.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Many times we're more concerned about what other people are going to think of us and our writing.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: We're afraid they're going to judge it or critique it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: We're way more concerned about our own ego than we are about helping other people.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So today, as you think about publishing, as you think about putting your work out there, just remember it's really all about blessing people.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And hey, if somebody doesn't like it, if somebody finds flaws in it, that's okay.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It's not for them.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But your work is for those who are going to be blessed and encouraged and inspired by what you put out into the world.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: See you in the next episode.
