The Cardinals just made a tough call, designating Tink Hence for assignment to make room for rising pitcher Quinn Mathews’ debut. Once a top prospect, Hence’s path has been derailed by injuries — sidelined much of last season and only recently participating in bullpen sessions. Now, if he clears waivers, he’ll hit free agency; if claimed, he joins another team’s 40-man roster. The Cards still hope to bring him back healthy, but for now, they’re moving forward with Mathews as their priority.
