- 0:00That's the gift again. You keep giving me the
- 0:02same gift. You let me decide clean, and then
- 0:05you tell me the truth after. My Playful Wife.
- 0:11Episode 46. The Slightly Bigger Room. Written
- 0:15by Mia. The idea arrived a few weeks after the
- 0:22no. The way her best ideas always arrive, not
- 0:26as a thunderclap, but as a thing she had apparently
- 0:28been quietly building in the back of herself
- 0:31while the front of her got on with the gray -green
- 0:33collection. She told me over chai, on an ordinary
- 0:38morning, in the plain voice she uses for things
- 0:41she has already decided and is now simply informing
- 0:45me of as a courtesy, which is one of my favorite
- 0:48of her voices. There is a particular pleasure
- 0:51in being married long enough to have cataloged
- 0:53the voices of the person you love, the work voice
- 0:56and the worry voice and the voice she uses for
- 0:59her mother, and the rare flat one that means
- 1:02a thing is already settled and beyond debate.
- 1:05I have spent 20 years learning hers, and I am
- 1:09still finding new ones, which is its own quiet
- 1:12argument against the idea that you ever finish
- 1:14knowing a person. The already decided voice is
- 1:18among the best, because it asks nothing of me.
- 1:21It is not seeking permission or counsel, only
- 1:25company, the simple courtesy of being told. I
- 1:29have learned to receive it as the gift it is,
- 1:31and not to mistake it for an invitation to weigh
- 1:34in. I'm going to take on hands, she said. Not
- 1:38a factory. Not the empire. I'm not unmaking the
- 1:41no. But I've been thinking about what growing
- 1:44my way actually looks like, the right shape growing,
- 1:47and I think it's this a slightly bigger room,
- 1:49a few more tables, and two or three young makers
- 1:52whose hands I teach. Not to make my work for
- 1:55me. To learn to make their own. I multiply by
- 1:59making more makers, not more product. That's
- 2:03the reach that doesn't cost me my hands. And
- 2:07I set down my cup, because I understood at once
- 2:10that she had just solved the thing, had found,
- 2:13in her own quiet way, the door that the whole
- 2:16fortnight of the offer had insisted did not exist.
- 2:20That is the quiet tyranny of a well -framed choice.
- 2:23It hides the third option by the very confidence
- 2:27with which it presents the first two. The man
- 2:30across the desk had not been lying when he laid
- 2:32out Reach or Truth as the only roads. He genuinely
- 2:36could not see the third, because the third does
- 2:38not exist in the world he lives in, the world
- 2:41of units and scale and quarterly growth. You
- 2:45cannot find a door someone else's frame has painted
- 2:48over. You can only get quiet enough and stubborn
- 2:51enough and free enough of the frame to feel along
- 2:55the wall for the seam of it yourself, which is
- 2:57exactly what Celonie had done in the back of
- 3:00herself while the front of her cut cloth. Because
- 3:06here was the false choice the Empire had presented.
- 3:09The binary the man across the wide desk had genuinely
- 3:13believed was the only one. Either you stay small
- 3:16and reach almost no one, or you scale and lose
- 3:20your hands. Reach or truth. Pick one. And the
- 3:25whole agonizing fortnight had been spent inside
- 3:28that binary, trying to decide which loss she
- 3:31could live with. Devika had widened it a little,
- 3:34into a question of which kind of maker you are.
- 3:37But it was Saloni weeks later, over an ordinary
- 3:40chai, who broke the binary altogether by finding
- 3:44the third thing hiding behind it, the reach that
- 3:47is not breadth but depth passed on, not more
- 3:50product but more makers, not the work multiplied
- 3:53by machines but the craft multiplied through
- 3:55human hands. Teaching The oldest answer there
- 4:00is, and the one the empire builders forget exists,
- 4:03because their imagination of reach is purely
- 4:06a matter of units shipped. But there is another
- 4:09reach, slower and smaller in its numbers, and
- 4:13incalculably larger in its half -life. The reach
- 4:16of the master who pours the true thing into an
- 4:19apprentice, who teaches a young pair of hands
- 4:22to find the bias by touch, and thereby sends
- 4:26the craft forward into a future. She will not
- 4:29live to see. The empire reaches 10 ,000 bodies
- 4:32this season and is forgotten in 20 years when
- 4:36the brand is sold and the name becomes a logo
- 4:39on a perfume. The teacher reaches three apprentices
- 4:42who reach three more apiece who reach three more.
- 4:45And the true thing, the actual living knowledge
- 4:48of how to make a thing well with your own hands,
- 4:51travels down the generations like a flame past
- 4:54candle to candle, never mass produced. never
- 4:58deluded, always handed person to person, warm,
- 5:02alive, intact. I have come to think this is why
- 5:05the world keeps nearly losing its crafts and
- 5:08then, against the odds, not quite losing them.
- 5:11Every true skill lives one death away from extinction
- 5:15in every generation. It survives only if someone
- 5:19who has it troubles to pour it into someone who
- 5:21does not, hand to hand, in real time, at the
- 5:25cost of their own hours. No book fully carries
- 5:29it, no video, no archive. The bias cut cannot
- 5:32be learned from a diagram, only from a master's
- 5:36hands correcting yours until your fingers learn
- 5:38the truth the words could never quite say. Celoni
- 5:42was about to become one of the small stubborn
- 5:44links in that chain, the people who keep a true
- 5:47thing alive simply by refusing to let it die
- 5:50with them. That is a reach the Empire cannot
- 5:53buy, because it cannot be scaled. It can only
- 5:56be given, one pair of hands at a time, by someone
- 6:00who still has the thing in her own hands to give.
- 6:03And there is, I have come to see, a second gift
- 6:06hidden inside the teacher's gift, one that flows
- 6:09the other way. To be chosen as an apprentice.
- 6:13To be the young pair of hands a master decides
- 6:16to pour herself into is to be told, by someone
- 6:20whose judgment you revere, that you are worth
- 6:22the irreplaceable hours of her one life, that
- 6:25she has looked at you and seen something fit
- 6:28to carry the thing forward. I do not think we
- 6:31talk enough about what that does to a young person
- 6:33to be selected as the vessel for a true craft.
- 6:37It is a form of love with no romance in it and
- 6:40enormous consequence. the love of a lineage choosing
- 6:44who will carry it next. Saloni was about to give
- 6:47that to someone, and the someone did not yet
- 6:50know their life was about to change. Devika built
- 6:56a house, Saloni said, working the idea aloud
- 6:59now, the way she works cloth, turning it to see
- 7:02how it falls. A whole institution that makes
- 7:06the thing. And it's a real achievement, I don't
- 7:09say it isn't. But a house makes product. I don't
- 7:13want to make product at scale. I want to make
- 7:15makers. So I'm not building a house. I'm building
- 7:19a slightly bigger room, big enough for a few
- 7:22more tables, a few more hands, but still small
- 7:25enough that I can stand in the middle of it and
- 7:27reach everything, still small enough to stay
- 7:30warm, still mine. A workshop, not a factory.
- 7:34The difference is everything. A factory exists
- 7:37to remove the hands from the work. A workshop
- 7:41exists to teach the hands the work. They look
- 7:44similar from outside, both bigger than what I
- 7:47have now, but they're opposite in their souls.
- 7:52I thought about that distinction for a long time
- 7:55after, because it seemed to me to reach far past
- 7:58cloth. So much of what goes wrong in a life comes
- 8:01from mistaking the factory kind of bigger for
- 8:03the workshop kind, from assuming that all growth
- 8:06is the same growth. that to get larger is to
- 8:09get larger in only one direction, the direction
- 8:12of scale and distance and the removal of the
- 8:14hands. Saloni had seen that there are two ways
- 8:17to become more and that they go in opposite directions.
- 8:20You can become more by multiplying the product
- 8:23and removing yourself from it, or you can become
- 8:26more by deepening the craft and pouring yourself
- 8:29further into it. The first makes you bigger and
- 8:32emptier. The second makes you bigger and fuller.
- 8:36I have spent a good part of my own life chasing
- 8:38the first kind without knowing there was a second,
- 8:41accumulating the markers of a larger life, the
- 8:44title, the standing, the rest of it, and wondering
- 8:47in the quieter hours why the accumulating left
- 8:49me feeling not fuller, but oddly more hollow,
- 8:52as though each increase had come with a small
- 8:55subtraction I could not name. I understand the
- 8:58subtraction now. It was the first kind of bigger,
- 9:01the emptying kind. The growth that adds to your
- 9:05circumstances while quietly removing you from
- 9:08your own days. Watching Celonie choose the other
- 9:11kind, I felt something in me lean toward it too.
- 9:14And almost no one distinguishes them because
- 9:17from a distance both just look like success.
- 9:23There was, for me, a private gladness in it that
- 9:27I did not say out loud at first because it was
- 9:29a little selfish and I wanted to examine it before
- 9:32I trusted it. The Empire, had she taken it, would
- 9:37have pulled her away, into travel, into scale,
- 9:40into a life of boardrooms and other cities and
- 9:44a calendar that belonged to the brand. I had
- 9:46refused, all fortnight, to let that fear weigh
- 9:50on her scale, and I am proud that I kept it off.
- 9:54But the fear had been real, privately, that the
- 9:58largeness would take her out of the life we shared.
- 10:01That I would become the man who was married to
- 10:03the institution. That the long, quiet middle
- 10:06we had only just learned to treasure would be
- 10:08eaten by the bigness. And the slightly bigger
- 10:11room had none of that in it. The workshop was
- 10:14here, in our city, blocks from our flat. The
- 10:18apprentices would come to her, not she to them.
- 10:21The growth would deepen her days, not relocate
- 10:25them. She was going to get larger without going
- 10:28anywhere, fuller without leaving, more without
- 10:31being pulled out of the marriage's long, warm
- 10:34middle. I had not let that hope tip her decision.
- 10:37But now that the decision was hers and made,
- 10:40I was allowed to feel it, and what I felt was
- 10:43the clean relief of a man whose wife had found
- 10:46a way to become everything she could become without
- 10:49it costing him the life they had built. That
- 10:52is a rare alignment and I did not take it for
- 10:55granted. Most marriages, I have come to think,
- 10:59are not destroyed by the dramatic betrayals the
- 11:02films warn us about. They are worn down, slowly,
- 11:06by exactly the misalignment I had been bracing
- 11:09for, by one person's necessary growth pulling,
- 11:12inch by inch, against the shape of the shared
- 11:16life. until the two of them look up one day to
- 11:19find they have grown in different directions
- 11:20and the house between them has gone quiet. I
- 11:24had been frightened of that quiet. The slightly
- 11:27bigger room dissolved the fear, not by asking
- 11:29Celonie to grow less, but by being a growth that
- 11:33happened to point the same way the marriage already
- 11:35did. You're pleased, she said, watching me work
- 11:39it out across the table, reading me the way she
- 11:42reads cloth and everything else. I am, I said.
- 11:48And I'll be honest about why, now that it can't
- 11:51sway you. The Empire scared me. Not for you,
- 11:56for us, for this, for the ordinary middle we
- 12:00just learned to love. I kept that off your scale,
- 12:03I promise I did. But the slightly bigger room
- 12:06doesn't scare me at all. You get to grow, and
- 12:10I get to keep you. I didn't think I was allowed
- 12:13to want both. Turns out with your way of growing,
- 12:16I get both. You were always allowed to want both,
- 12:21she said. You just weren't allowed to put on
- 12:24the scale, which you didn't, which is the whole
- 12:27reason I can't hear you say it now and just be
- 12:30glad, instead of wondering whether it's why I
- 12:33chose. She reached across and took my hand. That's
- 12:38the gift again. You keep giving me the same gift.
- 12:41You let me decide clean, and then you tell me
- 12:44the truth after. Do you know how safe that makes
- 12:47a person feel? To know that the man across the
- 12:50table will never, ever lie to you with his silence
- 12:54to get the outcome he wants? I did not have an
- 12:57answer for her, or not one I could say without
- 12:59my voice going, so I just held her hand across
- 13:02the table and let the question stand. because
- 13:06it was not really a question. It was a thing
- 13:08she had needed to say out loud, the naming of
- 13:11a safety she had not had for most of her life
- 13:14and had now. I thought of the careful, guarded
- 13:19woman she had been in the surface years, the
- 13:21one I first failed to truly see, and how that
- 13:25woman could never have said such a sentence,
- 13:27because she had never been given the safety it
- 13:30describes. We had built that safety, plank by
- 13:34plank, Across two years and a fortnight and a
- 13:37thousand silences kept at the right moments.
- 13:43She found a room itself within the month. A modest
- 13:47second floor space a few streets over. Bigger
- 13:50than the homework room, but not by much. Good
- 13:53light. Room for four tables where there had been
- 13:56one. She walked me through it before she signed
- 13:59the lease. And I watched her stand in the middle
- 14:01of the empty space and do the thing she does.
- 14:04The inward measuring, the feeling out of whether
- 14:07a room would let her stay herself in it. And
- 14:10it would. I could see her deciding it would.
- 14:13It was big enough to teach in and small enough
- 14:16to stay warm, and when she stood in the center
- 14:19of it she could, as she'd said she needed to,
- 14:22reach everything. It was the bigger room that
- 14:25did not cost her the small one. The third thing.
- 14:28The door the Empire swore did not exist. I'll
- 14:34keep the homework room too, she said, standing
- 14:37in the empty light. For the truest things, the
- 14:41collection pieces, the ones that have to be only
- 14:44my hands. This room is for teaching for the slightly
- 14:48more, for the makers. But the small room stays.
- 14:51A person should always keep the smallest room,
- 14:55the one that's only hers. You taught me that
- 14:59actually without meaning to the way you kept
- 15:02your notebooks even when nothing was forcing
- 15:04you to. Everyone needs the one room that doesn't
- 15:07scale. I'm not giving mine up. I'm just adding
- 15:11a slightly bigger one next to it. I wrote it
- 15:17in the fifth notebook that night. The lease about
- 15:19to be signed, the workshop about to begin, the
- 15:23gray -green collection still growing under her
- 15:26hands in the small room that would stay. The
- 15:29slightly bigger room. A few weeks after the no,
- 15:33Saloni found the third thing, broke the Empire's
- 15:37false binary, reach or truth, scale or hands,
- 15:41by finding the reach hiding behind it, teaching.
- 15:45I take on hands, not to make my work for me.
- 15:49to learn to make their own. I multiply by making
- 15:52more makers, not more product, the reach that
- 15:55doesn't cost me my hands. Reach by lineage, not
- 15:59scale. The empire reaches 10 ,000 bodies this
- 16:03season and is forgotten in 20 years when the
- 16:06brand becomes a logo on a perfume. The teacher
- 16:09reaches three apprentices who reach three more
- 16:12apiece. The true thing handed candle to candle
- 16:15down the generations, never mass produced. Never
- 16:19diluted. A reach the Empire can't buy because
- 16:22it can't be scaled. Only given one pair of hands
- 16:25at a time. Devika built a house. An institution
- 16:30that makes the thing -slash -product. Celoni
- 16:33builds a slightly bigger room. A workshop that
- 16:36makes makers. A factory removes the hands from
- 16:39the work. A workshop teaches the hands the work.
- 16:42They look similar from outside, opposite in their
- 16:46souls. The two ways to become more reaching past
- 16:50cloth, multiply the product and remove yourself
- 16:53bigger and emptier versus deepen the craft and
- 16:58pour yourself further in bigger and fuller. Almost
- 17:01no one distinguishes them because from a distance,
- 17:04both just look like success. My private gladness,
- 17:08said out loud only after it couldn't sway her
- 17:11the empire would have pulled her away. Travel
- 17:14slash boardroom slash a calendar belonging to
- 17:17the brand. My real private fear was losing her
- 17:21to the bigness, the ordinary middle eaten. The
- 17:24slightly bigger room has none of that. She gets
- 17:27larger without going anywhere, fuller without
- 17:30leaving. You get to grow and I get to keep you.
- 17:34I didn't think I was allowed to want both. Her.
- 17:38You were always allowed to want both. You just
- 17:41weren't allowed to put it on the scale, which
- 17:43you didn't, which is why I can hear you say it
- 17:46now and just be glad instead of wondering whether
- 17:49it's why I chose. Do you know how safe it makes
- 17:52a person to know the man across the table will
- 17:55never lie to you with his silence to get the
- 17:57outcome he wants? She found the room, a modest
- 18:01second floor space, good light, for tables where
- 18:04there'd been one. Big enough to teach in, small
- 18:08enough to stay warm, I can reach everything.
- 18:12Keeps the homework room, too, for the truest
- 18:14things, the only my hands pieces. Everyone needs
- 18:17the one room that doesn't scale. You taught me
- 18:21that keeping your notebooks when nothing forced
- 18:23you to. And below it, the working line. There
- 18:29are two ways to grow, and they go in opposite
- 18:31directions, and from a distance they look the
- 18:34same. One multiplies the product and removes
- 18:37you from it, bigger and emptier. The other deepens
- 18:41the craft and pours you further into it, bigger
- 18:44and fuller. The empire is the first. Teaching
- 18:48is the second. The first reaches more bodies
- 18:52this year. The second reaches fewer hands, but
- 18:55sends the true thing down the generations, candle
- 18:59to candle, where no scale can follow. And always,
- 19:03whatever you build beside it, keep the smallest
- 19:06room, the one that is only yours, that does not
- 19:09scale, that exists for the truest things and
- 19:13no one else's eyes. Add the bigger room if your
- 19:16shape calls for it. But never give up the small
- 19:19one. The small one is where you live. To be continued
