- 0:00Dolly Parton died. What a freaking bummer. Dolly
- 0:10Parton passed away, and I am not doing okay with
- 0:15this news. And for someone who's never met Dolly
- 0:19Parton, I shouldn't be as weepy as I am about
- 0:23this, but I... have been so inspired by that
- 0:26woman my entire life. And it's just hard to imagine
- 0:30a world without her shiny rainbow -ness in it.
- 0:33This is not the podcast I intended to put out
- 0:36today. I actually have a different podcast coming
- 0:38out tomorrow, regularly scheduled programming.
- 0:40But I just wanted to talk about how Dolly Parton
- 0:45has impacted. how I am as a person on the internet,
- 0:51as a public speaker, as a media business entity
- 0:56personality. Before I was a podcaster, I was
- 1:00a radio DJ on a country station nonetheless.
- 1:03And I always looked up to Dolly Parton as someone
- 1:05who was just this ray of light for people. Like
- 1:08always so positive, always so wonderful, always
- 1:11the shining light looking for the best in everyone
- 1:16and everything. And I think that that is something
- 1:19that the world does not have nearly enough of.
- 1:22And that's something that I've always strived
- 1:23to be whenever I was on air, whenever I'm recording
- 1:28a podcast, whenever I am on stage emceeing something
- 1:32or giving a speech. Like my goal is always to
- 1:36be. a positive force of nature and inspire other
- 1:41people to be happy and positive and shine their
- 1:43light on others. I'm crying a lot for someone,
- 1:46like I said, who's never met this woman, but
- 1:48she's just so impactful. And I think that shows
- 1:51the power of her impact is I'm someone who's
- 1:54never even been in the same vicinity as Dolly
- 1:58Parton, but I am at a loss. for words when it
- 2:02comes to her passing because of how her positivity
- 2:07and love and happiness radiated out of her and
- 2:11into the world through her music, through her
- 2:14speeches, through her imagination library, through
- 2:16the countless charity events she supported, through
- 2:19all of her endeavors. She was a force to be reckoned
- 2:23with and it was a force of positivity. And I
- 2:25think that's a huge lesson we can take into.
- 2:28podcasting and into how we interact in the world,
- 2:31you may never meet someone that you have such
- 2:34a profound impact on. Like you have no idea who
- 2:39your podcast truly is reaching unless they reach
- 2:42out to you and tell you, hey, I'm so impacted
- 2:44by what you're doing. You've helped me so much.
- 2:46You probably will never hear from those people,
- 2:48but you can leave a legacy that you have no idea
- 2:51is going to reach someone in small, rural Minnesota.
- 2:56from the smoky mountains like it's crazy the
- 2:59impact this woman has had and I think there's
- 3:02a lot of lessons to be learned when it comes
- 3:04to being a personality on the internet being
- 3:07a podcaster being a leader in your industry and
- 3:11I think that's just something I kind of want
- 3:13to chit chat about today because This loss of
- 3:17Dolly Parton is hitting me so freaking hard.
- 3:20Oh, if you're watching the video version of today's
- 3:22podcast, you're going to see a lot of tears.
- 3:24You're going to see a lot of runny noses. You're
- 3:26going to see a lot of wiping my eyes because
- 3:29I am just distraught over this loss of Dolly
- 3:33Parton. I am unwell. I saw the video of her nephew
- 3:39announcing her passing on Instagram today. I
- 3:42opened it up and it was posted three minutes.
- 3:45ago when I opened my Instagram account today
- 3:47and I was I saw his face and I saw it was from
- 3:51the Dolly Parton account and I knew this was
- 3:52not going to be good news and I just have been
- 3:57kind of a hot mess but I had some thoughts on
- 4:00the whole thing that I think can apply to being
- 4:02a podcaster. And what we're doing in the world
- 4:05with what we share online and what we share to
- 4:08our audiences. Dolly Parton has been a huge influence
- 4:11on my life growing up. I loved her music. I loved
- 4:16all of the sparkly outfits. I loved the big hair.
- 4:19I loved the big personality. For context, like
- 4:21in middle school, one of my favorite movies was
- 4:23Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. I think that
- 4:26says a lot about my personality. But I just,
- 4:28I... Loved Dolly Parton. I loved that she was
- 4:31so authentically her. Even when she was playing
- 4:34a role in a movie. Even when she was singing
- 4:37a song. Even when she was doing an appearance
- 4:39somewhere. She was just always 100 % her. And
- 4:42I think that's such a huge lesson we can take
- 4:45from her as podcasters. People gravitate to you
- 4:49because you are you. It doesn't matter if you're
- 4:52wearing rhinestones. It doesn't matter if you're
- 4:53wearing camouflage. It doesn't matter if you're
- 4:55just wearing your gym clothes. People love you.
- 4:58And that is a huge lesson that Dolly Parton has
- 5:02taught me in this lifetime. She was just unapologetically
- 5:05herself. And I think that's what makes so many
- 5:08people love her. And I think that is just something
- 5:10that we can carry in the conversations we're
- 5:13having with our audiences is just being so authentically
- 5:16you. People are going to love you for that. People
- 5:19can see through the fake. They can see through
- 5:21the artificial. But if you are you, people are
- 5:23going to love you for that. And I think we have
- 5:26Dolly Parton to thank for that lesson. I think
- 5:28another big lesson we can apply to podcasting
- 5:30from Dolly Parton is to be generous with our
- 5:33time and our talents and our resources. I credit
- 5:37her a lot with the childhood literacy crisis
- 5:40not being as bad as it is because of her imagination
- 5:43library. That woman donated. millions of books
- 5:47to people all across the country to help children
- 5:51find a love of reading at a young age. Like what
- 5:54a beautiful use of her time and resources and
- 5:58fame to give back to help a greater cause. She
- 6:01has been a champion for so many charities. Whenever
- 6:05there was a big crisis, you'd see her popping
- 6:06up on social media, using her platform for good
- 6:10to say, hey, I'm donating to this cause. It'd
- 6:13be great if you could join me too, or just share
- 6:14it, help in any way you can. I think that's something
- 6:17that we as podcasters don't realize. We have
- 6:20a bigger reach and a bigger platform than the
- 6:23average bear. And I think we can all take a note
- 6:25out of Dolly Parton's book here and use that
- 6:28platform for good. Leverage it to help something
- 6:31that you care about, that you believe in, a mission
- 6:33or a cause. Use your voice. Use your time. Use
- 6:37your talents. Interview people. Get the word
- 6:40out about something you care about. I think that
- 6:42is a huge thing that we can learn from Dolly
- 6:44is to give back and be generous and help a cause
- 6:48that you really care about because it goes a
- 6:51long way. It truly goes a long way. Remember
- 6:53during COVID when she was one of the first people
- 6:56to throw money at a vaccine? I'm just saying
- 6:59that like when there was a crisis, she was the
- 7:02first celebrity to step up and say, hey, I'm
- 7:04donating this much money to hopefully find something
- 7:08that's going to do a lot of good and save people
- 7:11and help people. We can all take a note from
- 7:13her and say. I'm going to step up. I'm going
- 7:15to help out. I'm going to do something good with
- 7:17my platform, with my voice, and help out in any
- 7:20way that I can. Another big lesson from Dolly
- 7:23is branding. That woman was a master brander.
- 7:26You think Dolly Parton, you think butterflies,
- 7:28you think big hair, and you think rhinestones.
- 7:31That is a lesson that I've carried into my own
- 7:34personal brand, into my podcast, into my life
- 7:38in general. My signature thing is the color purple,
- 7:41this light shade of purple. I try to have it
- 7:44hidden somewhere in everything I post, even though
- 7:47it's not hidden sometimes. Sometimes it's a bright
- 7:49purple blazer, like in the logo of this show.
- 7:52Have a signature thing that people can identify
- 7:55you for. Like we all know that butterflies and
- 7:58rhinestones and big hair, that is Dolly Parton
- 8:00through and through. And I think that that is
- 8:03just such a valuable lesson in branding because
- 8:05I know like just the other day I saw a butterfly
- 8:08fly past my window. I'm like, oh, Dolly Parton.
- 8:10That looks like a Dolly Parton butterfly. So
- 8:12think about your own branding and what can you
- 8:15have that is so signature you that people automatically
- 8:19associate your name. With that thing. I think
- 8:24that's so important. That woman was just a master
- 8:26brander. That woman was just a mogul. In so many
- 8:30ways. And she's always said in her interviews.
- 8:33She's like I didn't come from anything. I came
- 8:35from a poor family in the smoky mountains. And
- 8:37I became something. Like the drive of that woman.
- 8:40I think that's what I want to end on today. Is
- 8:43you can be one of the biggest stars. In the entire
- 8:46world. And you can come from absolutely nowhere.
- 8:51Just the grit and the work and the drive and
- 8:54the gumption that she had to make a name for
- 8:58herself, to make some really incredible art,
- 9:01to help so many people. That can be you too.
- 9:03That truly can be you too. It can be absolutely
- 9:06anyone. You just got to have the heart behind
- 9:08it, the work ethic behind it. It is so important.
- 9:12And to lose... inspiration like Dolly Parton
- 9:15is so hard but just because she's gone doesn't
- 9:18mean the inspiration is gone I think that's another
- 9:20important thing to remember is she may be gone
- 9:23but she's so far from forgotten and she is leaving
- 9:27a legacy of hard work being a good human helping
- 9:31out and just being a shining light in this world
- 9:34and now that she's gone it's our turn to be the
- 9:37shining lights. So as podcasters, let's all use
- 9:40our platforms for good to shine light on others.
- 9:42And remember a true icon, Dolly Parton. Oh gosh.
- 9:48I haven't been this distraught about someone
- 9:50passing away since Tom Petty. Oh God. I don't
- 9:53even know how to aptly wrap this up. I just wanted
- 9:56to put out this bonus episode today because obviously
- 9:59I'm very much in my feels about it. And I think
- 10:01it's important for you to be vulnerable with
- 10:05your audience. That's another lesson. That's
- 10:07a lesson from Abby. I think it's a lesson from
- 10:08Dolly, too. She was, like I said, unapologetically
- 10:11herself. And this is unapologetically me today.
- 10:15So love you, Dolly. We will always love you.
