Ep. 224. Who is Elektra from Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:12
My name is Megan and today I'm here to talk about another
• 0:15
  character for a character breakdown.
• 0:18
And it is actually not a mutant today, which is surprising.
• 0:22
But she is an iconic character that's been around for so long
• 0:27
and I am happy to see her still thriving.
• 0:30
So today I want to talk about Elektra.
• 0:32
So who is Elektra? She was created by Frank Miller
• 0:35
and she first appeared in daredevil #168 in October of
• 0:38
1964 as Elektra and then Daredevil Volume 6 #25 and 2020
• 0:45
  as Daredevil. Elektra.
• 0:48
Nachios was born on a small Greek island to Hugo Costas
• 0:52
Nachios and his wife Christina. When Elektra was still young,
• 0:57
her mother was shot and killed while they were vacationing on a
• 1:00
yacht. So as you can tell, she has
• 1:04
always been about that rich lifestyle.
• 1:07
After that, Elektra grew extremely close to her father,
• 1:10
but she also started having strange visions and hearing
• 1:13
voices no one else could hear. She coped in very unhealthy
• 1:17
ways, even hurting herself, and was eventually sent away for
• 1:20
psychotherapy. On top of that, her father
• 1:23
insisted she trained in martial arts, which turned out to work
• 1:26
out well for her. She started training at just 10
• 1:31
years old. Her sensei mocked her at first,
• 1:33
calling her a spoiled rich girl wasting her father's money, but
• 1:36
within two years, she'd surpassed everything he could
• 1:40
teach her. That's when he told her about
• 1:42
the Chest, a secretive warrior group led by the mysterious
• 1:45
Stick Electra track Stick down and became a student, but he
• 1:50
decided she had too much anger inside her and abandoned her.
• 1:54
She kept training anyways, and eventually caught the attention
• 1:58
of the Hand. A young woman named AKA took a
• 2:01
special interest in her, pretending to care and earning
• 2:04
Electra's loyalty in a way Stick never did.
• 2:07
Later, Electra's father was appointed Greek ambassador to
• 2:10
the United States, and she moved with him to New York, enrolling
• 2:13
at Columbia University, the same school as Matt Murdoch.
• 2:18
AKA asked Elektra to try to manipulate Matt into joining the
• 2:21
Hand. One night, she deliberately let
• 2:24
Matt spot her while she was leaping across a rooftops.
• 2:30
She teased him by dropping pieces of clothing as he
• 2:33
followed her, and she never let him catch her.
• 2:37
He ended up being briefly detained by police until they
• 2:41
realized he was blind and let him go, which was a funny scene
• 2:44
to read for something in the 60s because the police were just
• 2:47
like, this guy's blind. I don't think he even knows
• 2:50
where he is. And it was just funny.
• 2:52
I don't know. The next day, Electra took Matt
• 2:55
on a reckless joyride that ended at a Cliff.
• 2:58
She told him they were alike, both drawn to danger and always
• 3:01
living on the edge. Then she jumped off said Cliff
• 3:04
into icy water. Matt dove in to save her, only
• 3:08
to surface and seeing her laughing and driving away, They
• 3:11
started training together and fell deeply in love.
• 3:14
Stick warned Matt to stay away from her, calling her dangerous,
• 3:16
but Matt ignored him. Electra showed her toxicity from
• 3:20
the beginning but it's always worked for her.
• 3:24
Like when she first met Matt, he got arrested and she found that
• 3:28
hilarious. She dove in off a Cliff into icy
• 3:32
water, he jumped in and then she just drove off without him.
• 3:35
She found that hilarious. And even Stick who is not a good
• 3:40
person, came to Matt and said man you just need to not mess
• 3:44
with this girl. And he was like I'm just going
• 3:47
to ignore you. I don't care.
• 3:48
The it's their relationship has always been like this and I
• 3:52
really dig it. Tragedy struck when Elektra and
• 3:56
her father were taken hostage. A masked Mat stormed in to save
• 4:00
them. He rescued Elektra, but during
• 4:02
the chaos, a terrorist was kicked through a window and
• 4:05
police outside opened fire, thinking hostages were being
• 4:08
  killed. The bullets struck Elektra's
• 4:11
father instead. Devastated, Elektra left Mat in
• 4:14
the US. Before Foley disappearing, she
• 4:17
tracked down the man responsible for the attack.
• 4:19
She cornered him in a church. He claimed he'd only hired the
• 4:23
terrorist on someone else's orders, but she did not care.
• 4:28
A brutal fight broke out with his bodyguard.
• 4:30
Electra gouged the man's eyes and killed her target.
• 4:34
When the bodyguard retaliated, a sigh flew through the shadows
• 4:39
and saved her. She saw Stick and assumed Matt
• 4:42
had sent him. Impressed with the weapon, she
• 4:45
kept it, unaware it was originally belonged to a Hand
• 4:49
agent. Electra tried to rejoin the
• 4:52
chest, but Stick rejected her again.
• 4:54
Frustrated beyond belief, she returned to the Hand instead,
• 4:58
growing colder and more ruthless under their influence.
• 5:02
For years, she worked as a bounty hunter and an assassin.
• 5:06
Eventually, she crossed paths with Daredevil again, and
• 5:09
realizing he was Matt, they teamed up against Bullseye, who
• 5:13
was losing his mind from a brain tumor.
• 5:16
Matt disapproved of her killing, but their feelings were still
• 5:19
there. They fought the Hand together,
• 5:21
including its assassin Karige. Things shifted when the Kingpin,
• 5:26
Wilson Fisk, hired A lecturer as his chief assassin.
• 5:29
She was sent to kill journalist Ben Urich and later ordered to
• 5:33
kill not Foggy Nelson, but when Foggy recognized her, she could
• 5:37
not go through with it. Bullseye, desperate to reclaim
• 5:40
his spot as Fisk's top assassin, targeted Elektra.
• 5:44
He stabbed her with his her own sigh, and she died in Matt's
• 5:48
arms. But does it stop there?
• 5:51
Absolutely not. The Hand resurrected her through
• 5:54
a dark ritual, hoping to control her, but Stone of the Chest and
• 6:00
Daredevil managed to purify her soul during the process.
• 6:03
Alive again and cleansed, Elektra joined the chest in the
• 6:07
mountains. Later, a hand offshoot called
• 6:10
the Snake Root stole her essence and placed it in a corpse called
• 6:14
  Arinis. After a violent confrontation,
• 6:17
Elektra reabsorbed the corrupted essence into herself.
• 6:22
Trying to find purpose, she formed her own mercenary group
• 6:25
called the Ryu or the Ryu. I think it's Ryu.
• 6:28
I don't know to fight Snake Root, but she wasn't a great
• 6:33
leader and the entire team was killed, so she ultimately
• 6:37
destroyed Snake Root alone. She later helped Wolverine
• 6:40
regain his humanity when he descended into feral madness at
• 6:45
one point. Short on money, she even joined
• 6:48
a modern dance company while trying to open a Dojo.
• 6:52
Elektra continued freelance work with SHIELD.
• 6:55
When Hydra in the Hand resurrected heroes, including
• 6:58
Wolverine, to use as assassins, she was hired to stop him.
• 7:02
She was killed by Gorgon and resurrected yet again as a Hand
• 7:07
Warrior before eventually breaking free during the scroll
• 7:11
invasion. She was replaced by a scroll
• 7:13
named Pagan, who took over the Hand to create chaos.
• 7:17
After the invasion ended, Electra was freed from a crashed
• 7:21
scroll ship and taken into custody, only to break out when
• 7:24
a bounty hunter named Paladin came after the $82 million price
• 7:30
on her head. She joined Heroes for Hire,
• 7:33
  infiltrated Shadow Land, prevented Bullseye's
• 7:37
resurrection. She fought alongside teams like
• 7:40
the Thunderbolts under Red Hulk, battled the Puppet Master and
• 7:44
the Purple Man, and survived Pleasant Hill, where the Cosmic
• 7:48
Cube Kobik rewrote her identity into a small town sheriff named
• 7:53
Ava. When Baron Zemo attacked, her
• 7:56
memories returned. Electra briefly rejoined SHIELD,
• 8:00
taking over Phil Coulson's team and uncovering A mole.
• 8:03
She set traps, made hard calls, and eventually resigned.
• 8:08
She helped Deadpool and The Avengers Unity Division stop the
• 8:12
Hand from resurrecting Hulk, fought a reborn Hulk, and
• 8:16
refused to join the team permanently, though she teased
• 8:20
Human Torch on the way out. As she tends to do, she battled
• 8:26
the first, fought in Chicago against a sorcerer's named
• 8:29
Medea, survived Arcade's deadly game in Las Vegas, and adopted
• 8:35
an orphan named Alice during Knowles invasion while operating
• 8:38
as Daredevil in Matt's absence. When Matt was imprisoned,
• 8:43
Electra secretly bought Hell's Kitchen to protect it and later
• 8:47
took up the mantle of Daredevil herself to prove she stood for
• 8:50
more than killing. After Matt was freed, they
• 8:54
protected the city together. They formed the First to oppose
• 8:59
the Hand, but betrayal and a coordinated attack destroyed
• 9:03
their organization. Elektra was even arrested for a
• 9:06
murder she did not commit. After more tragedy, including
• 9:10
Matt dying in her arms and later being revived without memories,
• 9:14
Elektra continued protecting Hell's Kitchen alone, supporting
• 9:18
him from afar. She fought gang wars, battled
• 9:22
Madame Masks assassin Bologna, traveled to Madrepore searching
• 9:27
for Alice, reunited with Matt to take down a crime ring called
• 9:31
The Heat, and confronted Wilson Fisk as he was possessed by
• 9:36
  greed. Frustrated by Matt's mercy
• 9:39
towards Fisk, she took space and went on her own mission.
• 9:44
Most recently, after experiencing A disturbing
• 9:47
vision, a lecture discovered a gruesome sculpture made of body
• 9:50
  parts depicting her as Daredevil.
• 9:54
The work echoed the style of Muse, a supposedly dead serial
• 9:58
killer. Tracking down the culprit, an
• 10:00
art student named Morgan, she discovered that Muse's ghost was
• 10:05
influencing him, leading to another brutal confrontation.
• 10:09
And if you have not checked out that comic, I believe it's by
• 10:12
Erica Schultz. It's a Daredevil unleash hell.
• 10:15
It's a red band, so you are warned.
• 10:18
It is gruesome, but it is fantastic of great miniseries so
• 10:23
I think you'd really dig it. So I have some comics for you to
• 10:28
check out to get to know Elektra even better.
• 10:30
So you should check out Elektra Assassin, Elektra Lives Again,
• 10:37
Dark Rain, Elektra, Elektra 2014, and of course the one I

• 10:47
really good idea of who Elektra is and you'll get to see a lot
• 10:49
