- 0:01The book of Philemon. Let us pray.
- 0:07Our Father who is in heaven, holy is your name, Your Kingdom
- 0:15come and your will be done here on this earth, just as it is
- 0:19there in heaven. Give us Our Daily Bread.
- 0:23Forgive us for our many shortcomings.
- 0:26Help us, Lord, to forgive those who sin against us.
- 0:31Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
- 0:36For yours is the Kingdom and the glory and the honor and the
- 0:41power, forever and ever. In Jesus Christ, holy and
- 0:45precious name, I pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 0:52Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy, our brother
- 0:56unto Philemon, our dearly beloved and fellow laborer.
- 1:01So here is Paul's personal greeting to a man who had a
- 1:06runaway slave and he's wanting to restore him back.
- 1:11And you have to understand that God is a God of reconciliation.
- 1:14He loves for us to put people back together and for us to
- 1:21forgive those who have sinned against us.
- 1:24How can you be forgiven if you refuse to forgive?
- 1:29And that is the premise of this book here in God's Word, to and
- 1:37to our beloved Afia and Arcupus, our fellow soldier, and to the
- 1:42church in your house. Perhaps this Afia is Philemon's
- 1:47wife, who would have had charge over Onissimus.
- 1:52And perhaps this Arcopus is the son of Philemon, and he's
- 1:58writing to them as a little family.
- 2:01And he's saying, listen, I have your runaway slave here and you
- 2:08are now brothers and you are no longer master and servant.
- 2:14And so here Paul is going to eradicate slavery in the most
- 2:20subtle way. And we have to have the context
- 2:24of the bond servants and what all of it was about.
- 2:27It's not in the same disgusting, deplorable manner that we are
- 2:34accustomed to is this is something that was quite common
- 2:39and Christianity actually eradicated it, did not promote
- 2:44it, and it definitely did not command it.
- 2:49And there are so many people who are all turned around.
- 2:53But you need to understand that Paul never condoned it.
- 2:58He actually was very instrumental in the erosion of
- 3:04such a deplorable, disgusting system against humanity. 3 Grace
- 3:12to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 3:16Christ. What an amazing greeting unto
- 3:20old Philemon and his wife and son.
- 3:24And he's saying grace in this grace, friends, is the free gift
- 3:32that God has given to us that we can know that we know that all
- 3:36of our sins are forgiven and they were all paid in full at
- 3:41Calvary. What an amazing thought.
- 3:44And this is nothing that we have done and it's everything that he
- 3:47did. Peace can only come from God
- 3:51Almighty. It can only come from knowing
- 3:54that you are in right standing with God because of what Jesus
- 3:58Christ did when He made us at one with Father God.
- 4:05For I thank my God making mention of you always in my
- 4:08prayers. So this is praying without
- 4:11ceasing. This is praying always about
- 4:15everything. This is not just your
- 4:18supplications. This is not just your prayer
- 4:21closet. This is not just your face to
- 4:24the ground. This is not just your head
- 4:27bowed, friends. This is praying without ceasing,
- 4:31without stopping, with earnest and honest openness to God
- 4:37Almighty all the day long. Just making mention to God about
- 4:45Philemon is Paul's practice here, and it should be ours as
- 4:50well. This is a life that is
- 4:52completely sold out to God Almighty is one who does not
- 4:57press the pause button on your prayer life.
- 5:00It is constant, it's in the boardroom, friends, it is in
- 5:06every arena, and every single moment of your day is prayer and
- 5:12it is worship, and it is a pleasing aroma unto God
- 5:16Almighty, 5 hearing of your love and faith, which you have toward
- 5:23the Lord Jesus and toward All Saints.
- 5:26So we can see that old Philemon had a church that had started in
- 5:31his house. And Paul here is hearing about
- 5:35the beautiful Koinonia, this one another in communion that's
- 5:40happening within the walls of Philemon's house and how the
- 5:45Holy Spirit is there. And there's a an immense amount
- 5:48of freedom inside of Philemon's house.
- 5:51And Paul here is wanting to tell Philemon just how incredibly
- 6:01happy he is to hear of all the wonderful things that are
- 6:04happening inside of this little house church.
- 6:11Six, that the communication of your faith may become effectual
- 6:16by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you, in
- 6:21Christ Jesus. That's how we become effectual
- 6:24in the ministry is by living a life completely sold out to the
- 6:29King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 6:31It's not by compartmentalizing our life and having a different
- 6:35us on Saturday night, on Friday night, a different us on Sunday
- 6:40morning, friends, and Wednesday night.
- 6:43We need to be congruent. We need to make sure that we
- 6:47practice what we preach. We need to be those who tap into
- 6:52the fullness that God has for us in this little lifetime that we
- 6:56have. Your life is but a vapor, and
- 6:58it's here today and gone tomorrow.
- 7:00Don't waste your life. Don't be ashamed at the end of
- 7:05your life because you were not a soul winner for Christ Jesus. 7
- 7:12For we have great joy and consolation in your love,
- 7:15because the bowels of the Saints are refreshed by you, brother.
- 7:20So you can see that Philemon was a warrior for Christ.
- 7:25He was very much concerned with the edification of the Saints
- 7:31and winning people over to Jesus Christ by living a life that
- 7:38actually mirrored and modeled and added up to Jesus.
- 7:43And people did not see duplicity and hypocrisy in Philemon's
- 7:48life. A Wherefore though I might be
- 7:52much bold in Christ to enjoin you that which is convenient.
- 7:57So Paul wants to come to Philemon. 9 Yet for love sake, I
- 8:04rather beg you, being such at 1:00 as Paul the aged and now
- 8:11also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. So Paul here is going to start
- 8:15tugging on Philemon's heartstrings, and he's saying,
- 8:19Remember Me, not only am I old, but I'm also in prison for the
- 8:24gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ sake. 10 I beg you for my son
- 8:36Onissimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds.
- 8:40So this Onissimus was a runaway slave from Philemon's house, and
- 8:44Philemon's wife would have had charge over the servants.
- 8:49And Philemon has run away to Rome, where Paul is in prison.
- 8:54He's somehow become a disciple of Paul while he's been in Rome.
- 9:03And Paul was the very one who led Philemon to the Lord and
- 9:08started the house church there. And you can see here this
- 9:12beautiful spider web, this beautiful story of how God is
- 9:18the God of reconciliation, and he wants Onissimus to be
- 9:25reconciled back into a wonderful relationship with Philemon, not
- 9:32as a servant, but as a brother in Christ Jesus.
- 9:36What an amazing thought, how God loves us and He wants us to be a
- 9:43family who serve him as the bride of Christ. 11 which in
- 9:51times past was to you unprofitable, but now profitable
- 9:57to you and to me. So this is a play on words.
- 10:00This onissimus means profitable. And Paul saying I know that he
- 10:05was unprofitable to you, but he has lived up to his name with
- 10:10me. And because he's been that to
- 10:11me, he by way is being that to you. 12 whom I have sent again.
- 10:23You therefore receive him. That is my own bowels.
- 10:27So Paul here is saying I'm sending them back to you.
- 10:31Do not treat him as a slave, treat him as a brother. 13 whom
- 10:39I would have retained with me, that in your stead he might have
- 10:44ministered to me in the bonds of the gospel.
- 10:47So this Onissimus, he was very profitable for Paul while Paul
- 10:53was in prison. And he's saying because Paul
- 10:56understands the situation, that Onissimus has run away from
- 11:02Paul's first disciple, Philemon. He's saying it is right for you
- 11:07to be restored back to Him and for you to lay down all of the
- 11:13worldly entanglements and to actually raise up to a higher
- 11:18spiritual plane in Christ Jesus, and not to be debased and not to
- 11:24be so carnal, and not to be so selfish, and not to be so
- 11:29immature to look at others as lesser.
- 11:35That is not the heart of God. God's heart is a Mago day that
- 11:40humankind is His masterpiece, and we do not need to think of
- 11:47others as lesser friends. 14 But without your mind would I do
- 11:59nothing that your benefit should not be as it were of necessity,
- 12:05but willingly, Paul saying, I did not want to demand that
- 12:09Onissimus would stay here with me.
- 12:12If you decide to send him back to me, then I will take him
- 12:17because he has been very profitable unto me. 15-4 Perhaps
- 12:25he therefore departed for a season that you should receive
- 12:29him forever. So Paul saying, it is to your
- 12:33benefit that he escaped from you, because now he has come to
- 12:38me and he has been evangelized and taught about the Lord Jesus
- 12:42Christ. He's received him as his Lord
- 12:46and Savior and now he is no longer unprofitable to you, but
- 12:51he is a brother and he is a coequal inheritor of eternal
- 12:57life with us. What an amazing story of how God
- 13:03can take those who are kicked down and and who are forgotten
- 13:10about, those who have no earthly inheritance and he can give them
- 13:17the adoption where they cry out ABBA and they become sons and
- 13:21daughters of the Most High God and they have a eternal
- 13:26inheritance forevermore. What an amazing God we serve. 16
- 13:35not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother, beloved,
- 13:41especially to me, but how much more to you both in the flesh
- 13:45and in the Lord. So he's saying he's no longer
- 13:49your servant, but he is a brother and you should treat him
- 13:52that way. And this was the abolition of
- 13:56all of the slavery is when we start to see that there is no
- 14:04servant other than the servant of Jesus Christ and that we as
- 14:11Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ and we do not
- 14:15need to try to treat others as lesser.
- 14:19That is not the heart of God. 17 If you count me, therefore a
- 14:27partner receive him as myself. So Paul was the conduit of how
- 14:35Philemon came to Christ Jesus and now he's saying if I have
- 14:41done anything good for you then you will receive Onissimus as a
- 14:49brother and not as a servant and definitely not as a criminal 18.
- 15:03If he has wronged you or owes, you ought put that on my
- 15:09account. So Paul here saying you can just
- 15:12add whatever he owes you to my account.
- 15:17But see the thing about it is Philemon owed Paul his very life
- 15:23because Paul had helped him to come to the faith in the Lord
- 15:28Jesus Christ. And so Paul's laying on that and
- 15:33saying, listen, there is a, an account of the massive amount of
- 15:43due for my evangelism in your life.
- 15:48So if you count me worthy of anything, then just forgive him
- 15:53as you have been forgiven and freely you've received and so
- 15:58freely you shall give. And that is the principle.
- 16:02We don't hold back on anybody, regardless of class, regardless
- 16:07of intellect, regardless of creed, regardless of background,
- 16:12regardless of language, regardless friends of how they
- 16:18look. We spread the seed out to every
- 16:21single man and woman that we meet today, knowing that most of
- 16:27it is going to fall on unprofitable soil, but only a
- 16:31few will find that narrow, straight gate to eternal life.
- 16:3919 I, Paul, have written it with my own hand.
- 16:43I will repay it. I'll be it.
- 16:45I do not say to you how you owe unto me, even your own self
- 16:51besides. So that is what Paul is pulling
- 16:54upon. He's saying, Listen, Philemon,
- 16:58forgive Anissimus. Do not be immature and do not be
- 17:05so debased that you act within the flesh and act carnally and
- 17:15earthy. This transcends all of that.
- 17:19This is transrational. Philemon 20 Yeah, brother, let
- 17:27me have joy of you and the Lord. Refresh my bowels.
- 17:33And the Lord, he's saying, do the right thing.
- 17:39Don't slip back into how the world works, don't slip back
- 17:48into pride, don't slip back into anger and malice, don't slip
- 17:54back into forgetting your first love.
- 17:59But do the right thing and I will rejoice with you. 21 Having
- 18:05confidence in your obedience, I wrote unto you, knowing that you
- 18:10will also do more than I say. So just like the prodigal son's
- 18:15father, when he saw the son returning, he ran to him and put
- 18:22the robe on him and the ring on him, and he slaughtered the
- 18:26fattened calf and threw a party. Here Paul saying, I know that
- 18:31you're going to do more than just receive him as a brother.
- 18:3622 But with all, prepare me also a lodging, for I trust that
- 18:42through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
- 18:45What an amazing thought that the prayers of the Saints actually
- 18:51are effectual within the world. For moving mountains and
- 18:56splitting seas, For healing diseases, friends, and having
- 19:01the blindfolds removed. For setting the prisoners free.
- 19:06Friends, we need to be men and women of prayer.
- 19:09We do not need to let our prayer life wane, friends.
- 19:13Let it wax strong and bold in Christ Jesus. 23 There, salute
- 19:20you, Apaphrus, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus. 24
- 19:25Marcus Aristarchus Dimas Lucas, my fellow laborers will end on.
- 19:3225 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
- 19:38Amen. You know most of Paul's letters
- 19:42were written to the churches to be read aloud and to be
- 19:50distributed. And here you can see this
- 19:53personal note of how Paul just wrote this to restore all
- 20:02Anissimus the profitable back to Philemon.
- 20:07And it is a beautiful story of how God's heart is for his
- 20:12people who are called by his name.
- 20:15And we'll see greater things. Friends, I hope you've been
- 20:19blessed by this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 20:22I know, I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 20:27of you. I love you.
- 20:30We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 20:31God bless you.
