- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. It's a mix of up and down
- 0:08Speaker 2: when it comes to the PUB's latest pricing adjustment. Gas
- 0:12Speaker 2: is up 4.7 cents per liter. Diesel drops by 6.7
- 0:17Speaker 2: cents on the island and nearly 4 cents in Labrador West.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Furnace oil decreases by nearly 6 cents, while stove oil
- 0:25Speaker 2: in Lab West is down by roughly 2.5. Propane used
- 0:29Speaker 2: for home heating is up by about two cents per liter.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Bikers and drivers participated in a drive past Ascension Collegiate
- 0:44Speaker 2: in Bay Roberts yesterday in support of a student who
- 0:47Speaker 2: was assaulted in a video that was shared to social media.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Two students have been charged in connection with the incident,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and RCMP say more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Traffic honked their horns and revved their engines as they
- 1:03Speaker 2: passed by the school yesterday afternoon. For years, the NLTA
- 1:07Speaker 2: has been raising concerns about increased violence in schools, calling
- 1:10Speaker 2: for greater staffing and resources to address the problem. Area
- 1:15Speaker 2: MHA and justice critic Pam Parsons says, government needs to
- 1:19Speaker 2: do more to support schools and school communities.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We do know, we've heard for quite some time, that
- 1:25Speaker 1: classroom sizes are getting too large. So the more that
- 1:27Speaker 1: we can do to have these conversations, because safety is paramount.
- 1:31Speaker 1: everybody deserves to work and grow and play and learn
- 1:34Speaker 1: in an environment where they are safe, where they're respected,
- 1:36Speaker 1: where they're included, and where they can thrive ultimately. And
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean, violence has no place in the classroom, in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the hallway, in a bathroom, in the workplace, in the home,
- 1:45Speaker 1: on the playground, you name it. So the more that
- 1:47Speaker 1: we can do to enhance safety of everybody involved, students, teachers, staff,
- 1:52Speaker 1: school community, residents as a whole, it's something that we
- 1:54Speaker 1: can always be improving at. And I'm calling on Minister
- 1:56Speaker 1: Dean to sit down and to figure out exactly how
- 1:58Speaker 1: we can improve conditions in all schools across Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Meanwhile, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association
- 2:06Speaker 2: says the violent assault shared on social media is just
- 2:10Speaker 2: one of an average of 23 incidents happening every day.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Dale Lamb raised concerns about the overall level of violence
- 2:18Speaker 2: shortly after the RCMP and Bay Roberts arrested two young
- 2:21Speaker 2: people in connection with the video. Lamb says violent incidents
- 2:25Speaker 2: are becoming more prevalent within the school system and teachers
- 2:28Speaker 2: and principals are increasingly having to rely on police intervention.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Overall, the trend would be in our communities to see
- 2:37Speaker 3: an increase in RCMP or RNC involvement because they're the
- 2:43Speaker 3: forces that are equipped. to handle the situations and to
- 2:47Speaker 3: know what the repercussions should be for these situations. This
- 2:50Speaker 3: past year, 2025, there were an average of 23 violent
- 2:54Speaker 3: incidents per day here in our Newfoundland and Labrador schools.
- 2:59Speaker 2: The province says the tender for previously announced highway twinning
- 3:02Speaker 2: projects on the island is expected to be issued within
- 3:06Speaker 2: the coming weeks. Linda Swain has more for VOCM News.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Government was responding to a recent online petition launched by
- 3:13Speaker 4: the sister of a young woman killed in a highway
- 3:15Speaker 4: crash last spring. Faith Power's sister Erica and her boyfriend
- 3:19Speaker 4: Kerry Sargent passed away in a collision in central Newfoundland
- 3:22Speaker 4: in April. The tragedy prompted Faith to launch an online
- 3:25Speaker 4: petition asking government to extend the divided highway right across
- 3:28Speaker 4: the island. The province's highways have taken a terrible toll
- 3:31Speaker 4: this year with numerous serious and fatal crashes. In December
- 3:35Speaker 4: of last year, government announced that it was abandoning the
- 3:37Speaker 4: previous P3 model for a traditional procurement model. The province
- 3:41Speaker 4: says the tender to twin 15 kilometres of the Trans-Canada
- 3:44Speaker 4: Highway at Bishops Falls and an extension to the divided
- 3:47Speaker 4: highway 40 kilometres beyond Whitburn will be issued in the
- 3:51Speaker 4: coming weeks. The first RFP for those projects was originally
- 3:54Speaker 4: issued last summer.
- 3:56Speaker 2: The provincial government is launching a new way to renew
- 3:59Speaker 2: the photo on your driver's license online. Government Services Minister
- 4:04Speaker 2: Lloyd Parrott will be in Clarenville today to launch the
- 4:06Speaker 2: new photo renewal service, which will be done through MyGovNL.
- 4:10Speaker 2: The launch is happening at Bakery 56 at 2. A
- 4:14Speaker 2: new report about the Tumblr Ridge shooting is raising questions
- 4:17Speaker 2: about what information ChatGPT allegedly provided to the teen accused
- 4:22Speaker 2: in the attack. An article in Mother Jones magazine says
- 4:26Speaker 2: 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar received harmful information and found ways
- 4:30Speaker 2: to get around the chatbot's safety restrictions. B.C. Attorney General
- 4:35Speaker 2: Nikki Sharma says the allegations are deeply concerning and strengthen
- 4:39Speaker 2: the case for mandatory safeguards on artificial intelligence. American country
- 4:45Speaker 2: music star Riley Green is set to perform at the
- 4:47Speaker 2: halftime show of this year's Grey Cup. The Canadian Football
- 4:51Speaker 2: League says Sarah McLachlan will sing the national anthem. She'll
- 4:55Speaker 2: perform while the Canadian Forces Snowbirds return for their last
- 4:59Speaker 2: official flypast before the fleet retires. The Grey Cup is
- 5:03Speaker 2: scheduled for November 15th in Calgary. That's your news. I'm
- 5:08Speaker 2: Sarah Strickland.
