- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday the 5th of
- 0:15November. Great that you have tapped on
- 0:18play and invited me to join you as we are going to read the
- 0:23Pentecost reading. Yes, this is the story about
- 0:26really what many people would describe as the birth of the
- 0:29church, the time when the Holy Spirit gets sent into the world
- 0:34in this tangible way, into the followers of Jesus.
- 0:38That's right, friends, that's you and me.
- 0:41This is where it all started. And the Holy Spirit takes
- 0:44residence in our heart in this way.
- 0:47How fantastic. You're ready to read it?
- 0:50Yep, me too. Let us read together Acts
- 0:53chapter 2. On the day of Pentecost, all the
- 1:07believers were meeting together in one place.
- 1:10Suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a
- 1:14mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were
- 1:17sitting. Then what looked like flames or
- 1:20tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them, and
- 1:25everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began
- 1:29speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this
- 1:32ability. At that time there were devout
- 1:36Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
- 1:39When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they
- 1:42were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by
- 1:46the believers. They were completely amazed.
- 1:49How can this be? They exclaimed.
- 1:51These people are all from Galilee, yet we hear them
- 1:54speaking in our own native languages.
- 1:58Here we are Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from
- 2:02Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontius, the province of Asia,
- 2:08Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and the areas of Libya and Cyrene,
- 2:13visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans
- 2:18and Arabs. And we all hear these people
- 2:22speaking our own languages about the wonderful things God has
- 2:25done. They stood there amazed and
- 2:29perplexed. What can this mean?
- 2:32They asked each other. But others in the crowd
- 2:34ridiculed, saying they're just drunk, that's all.
- 2:38Then Peter stepped forward with the 11 other apostles and
- 2:42shouted to the crowd. Listen carefully, all of you,
- 2:45fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem, make no mistake about
- 2:50this. These people are not drunk as
- 2:53some of you are assuming. 9:00 in the morning is much too early
- 2:56for that note. What you see was predicted long
- 3:00ago by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God says, I
- 3:05will pour out my spirit upon all people.
- 3:08Your sons and daughters will prophecy, Your young men will
- 3:12see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
- 3:15In those days I will pour out my spirit even on my servants, men
- 3:21and women alike, and they will prophecy, and I will cause
- 3:25wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood
- 3:30and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark and the
- 3:35moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of
- 3:40the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the
- 3:43name of the Lord will be saved. People of Israel, listen.
- 3:49God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful
- 3:54miracles, wonders and signs through Him, as you well know.
- 3:58But God knew what would happen, and His prearranged plan was
- 4:02carried out. When Jesus was betrayed, with
- 4:06the help of the lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a
- 4:09cross and killed him. But God released him from the
- 4:13horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could
- 4:17not keep him in its grip. King David said this about him.
- 4:21I see that the Lord is always with me.
- 4:24I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.
- 4:29No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts His praises.
- 4:33My body rests in hope, for You will not leave my soul among the
- 4:38dead or allow your Holy 1 to rot in the grave.
- 4:42You have shown me the way of life, and You will fill me with
- 4:46the joy of Your presence. Dear brothers, think about this.
- 4:52You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn't referring
- 4:55to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still
- 4:59here among us. But he was a prophet, and he
- 5:03knew God had promised with an oath that one of David's own
- 5:07descendants would sit on his throne.
- 5:10David was looking into the future and Speaking of the
- 5:13Messiah's resurrection. He was saying that God would not
- 5:17leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the
- 5:20grave. God raised Jesus from the dead
- 5:25and we are all witnesses of this now.
- 5:28He is exalted to the place of highest honour in heaven at
- 5:32God's right hand. And the Father, as he had
- 5:36promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just
- 5:41as you see and hear to day. For David himself never ascended
- 5:46into heaven. Yet he said, the Lord said to my
- 5:50Lord, sit at the place of honour at my right hand, until I humble
- 5:55your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.
- 5:59So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made
- 6:04this Jesus whom you crucified to be both Lord and Messiah.
- 6:13Peter's words pierced their hearts and they said to him and
- 6:17to the other apostles, Brothers, what should we do?
- 6:21Peter replied. Each of you must repent of your
- 6:25sins and turn to God and be baptised in the name of Jesus
- 6:29Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
- 6:32Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:35This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away,
- 6:41all who have been called by the Lord our God.
- 6:44Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging
- 6:48all his listeners. Save yourselves from this
- 6:50crooked generation. Those who believed what Peter
- 6:54said were baptised and added to the church that day, about 3000.
- 6:59In all all the believers devoted themselves to the apostle
- 7:04teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing meals, including the
- 7:08Lord's Supper, and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over
- 7:13them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs
- 7:18and wonders. And all the believers met
- 7:20together in one place and shared everything they had.
- 7:23They sold their property and possessions and shared the money
- 7:27with those in need. They worshipped together at the
- 7:30temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and
- 7:34shared their meals with great joy and generosity, all the
- 7:38while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.
- 7:43And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were
- 7:47being saved. Oh our God, you are incredible.
- 8:02Not only are you the Father, the Creator of all, but you are also
- 8:09the Son. You are Jesus who came to save
- 8:13us, to show us what your nature, God's nature, is really like.
- 8:19And finally, Lord, you are Spirit, You come and you dwell
- 8:24in US so that we would know intimately who you are and what
- 8:30your plans are. Thank You that as Your Spirit
- 8:34dwells in US, You convict us of Your truth so that we can know
- 8:38You better, we can know Jesus better, and we can better be
- 8:44empowered to live as Your disciples.
- 8:48Holy Spirit, grow in US, take control of us.
- 8:52May we be effective agents for Your Kingdom in this world
- 8:56around us. We are just blown away that You
- 9:01would choose to include us in this way.
- 9:04Come and be so close and so intimate with us and in US.
- 9:11So fill us today as we just revel in your presence, a
- 9:16wonderful saving God. It's in your name that we pray,
- 9:20Jesus, Amen.
