- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, there's a lot more to get to, but
- 0:02Speaker 1: I want to jump right into this. Texas Women play
- 0:06Speaker 1: Southern University tonight at Moody Center at seven o'clock. Again,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you can hear the broads hope to see out there
- 0:12Speaker 1: Moody and if not, you can certainly hear it on
- 0:15Speaker 1: one of three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. You
- 0:19Speaker 1: can listen through the app that would be the connect
- 0:23Speaker 1: through the iHeartRadio app, also the Texas Longhorns app and
- 0:27Speaker 1: the LHN app on our network app as well, so
- 0:31Speaker 1: there's different ways to access it also. But leading into
- 0:36Speaker 1: the game, the thoughts from Vic Schaeffer again, this was
- 0:39Speaker 1: a media availability yesterday and he was talking about the
- 0:42Speaker 1: road they'd have with five out of six games on
- 0:43Speaker 1: the River, actually five in a rowing road in six
- 0:45Speaker 1: out of seven in total. So here is the Q
- 0:49Speaker 1: and A with Vic Schaeffer yesterday talking about this impending
- 0:53Speaker 1: matchup with Southern and what's to come with the trip
- 0:55Speaker 1: to Richmond this Sunday.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for being here everybody. I'm glad to be
- 1:01Speaker 2: back home for a few days. Proud of my team,
- 1:07Speaker 2: proud of the effort they gave on Sunday rebounding from
- 1:12Speaker 2: obviously a tough loss on Thursday night where we probably
- 1:16Speaker 2: didn't play very well. That's not taking anything from Notre Dame,
- 1:21Speaker 2: but twenty three turnovers against two three zone is.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Hard.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's hard to beat anybody, especially a top ten team
- 1:29Speaker 2: on the road, when you turn the ball over twenty
- 1:32Speaker 2: three times, and so many of our turnovers were unforced,
- 1:36Speaker 2: just trying to do way too much. And so, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 2: in a game like that, much like in the football
- 1:44Speaker 2: game the other night, it's it's one possession, it's one play,
- 1:47Speaker 2: it's one rebounds, it's one defensive stop. You know, it's
- 1:52Speaker 2: one execution versus a you know, poor execution. And when
- 1:58Speaker 2: you're playing in those types of games, in that scenario,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you really you know, for us being on the road,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you've got to be on point. And had so many
- 2:07Speaker 2: good things happening down the stretch. Rory showed tremendous toughness,
- 2:11Speaker 2: making a tough shot and making two free throws to
- 2:15Speaker 2: get it to overtime. And so, you know, got in
- 2:20Speaker 2: at three in the morning on Friday morning, had to
- 2:24Speaker 2: go to class, tried to practice Friday afternoon a little bit.
- 2:29Speaker 3: It wasn't very good as I'm sure you can imagine.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Saturday was much better, but playing problems, playing delays. We
- 2:38Speaker 2: got in there late Saturday night, had early shoot around
- 2:41Speaker 2: Sunday morning, and then the way we showed up and played,
- 2:47Speaker 2: especially Rory and Madison. I thought Taylor was really good
- 2:53Speaker 2: after taking a tough, tough fall on Thursday night, really
- 2:58Speaker 2: was limited practicing on Friday, didn't practice at all. It
- 3:04Speaker 2: would be correct, and then Saturday was a little bit better.
- 3:08Speaker 2: But man, I thought she was right on point on
- 3:11Speaker 2: Sunday defensively altered shots, block shots or hedging on ball
- 3:15Speaker 2: screens was on point. She only went one for one,
- 3:20Speaker 2: but she impacted the game so much. And then Jordan
- 3:23Speaker 2: Lee obviously making shots. She actually went six for seven.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They didn't get the one that she missed, but she
- 3:31Speaker 2: went six for seven from three.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So anytime you can add that to.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Your arsenal Rory went two for two, it really helps
- 3:41Speaker 2: your case. And obviously we made shots early. Our defense
- 3:45Speaker 2: was on point, held them to nine points in the
- 3:47Speaker 2: second quarter. You're up fifty seven I think to twenty
- 3:51Speaker 2: nine and half or twenty eight, or maybe it was
- 3:53Speaker 2: maybe it's fifty seven to twenty eight.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But it was a lot and played really good. It's
- 4:00Speaker 2: a team that has got some really good players. I mean,
- 4:02Speaker 2: they're probably gonna win their league like they did a
- 4:04Speaker 2: year ago. They've got pre season player of the Year
- 4:07Speaker 2: on their team, and so, you know, I thought we
- 4:12Speaker 2: played really well and again four kids really showed up
- 4:18Speaker 2: and made a really positive impact and.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It kind of carried our team.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So gave them the yesterday off and much needed and
- 4:31Speaker 2: we'll get ready today finally going to get to play
- 4:33Speaker 2: it in Austin.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I don't know if it's a home game.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We hadn't been in the Moody in a while either,
- 4:38Speaker 2: so I don't know how well we'll shoot it in there.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But we're going to get to play in Austin on
- 4:42Speaker 2: our campus anyway, and so that'll be good tomorrow, and
- 4:46Speaker 2: then back on the road this weekend against a you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: a really good Richmond team that was twenty nine and
- 4:53Speaker 2: six last year in the NCAA tournament. They've got five
- 4:56Speaker 2: starters back and two kids out of the portal from
- 4:59Speaker 2: Power our Fives that were pretty good players at their
- 5:01Speaker 2: previous school.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So we'll have another, you know, challenge.
- 5:05Speaker 2: This weekend going back on the road, but excited for
- 5:09Speaker 2: our kids to be able to play at home tomorrow night,
- 5:11Speaker 2: Excited for our fans to be able to see our
- 5:13Speaker 2: kids play, hoping we'll have a great environment.
- 5:19Speaker 3: NKS coach.
- 5:19Speaker 4: We'll start with Mark, Hey, what prompted this sudden I
- 5:25Speaker 4: guess it's two game barrage of three point baskets?
- 5:28Speaker 3: And is this something we could expect to see more of? Yeah?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Mark, I think we're more than capable of shooting, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 2: making shots from out there. Rory's already been in this morning,
- 5:42Speaker 2: like she is every day. Shay comes in just about
- 5:46Speaker 2: every day, Jordan Lee's in every day, Madison Booker's in
- 5:50Speaker 2: every day. When I talk about my kids and being
- 5:54Speaker 2: a pro, that's what I'm talking about. They're invested in
- 5:59Speaker 2: their game. Y'all have heard me say this a bunch.
- 6:02Speaker 2: The game is real fair. You're going to get out
- 6:04Speaker 2: of it what you put into it. Those kids invest
- 6:08Speaker 2: in their game. I wish I could say I have
- 6:10Speaker 2: fourteen kids again in the gym and do that every day,
- 6:13Speaker 2: but I just can't.
- 6:14Speaker 3: But those kids do. They work at it, and when.
- 6:19Speaker 2: We go to the arena right now, you know, I've
- 6:23Speaker 2: got four kids that they want to be out there
- 6:27Speaker 2: on their own early. I'm talking about two hours prior
- 6:30Speaker 2: to tip, working up a sweat, getting up game like shots.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And so I just think, to answer your question, we're
- 6:42Speaker 2: more than capable of that. I had told Jordan Lee
- 6:46Speaker 2: last week after the Notre Dame game, I said, you're
- 6:48Speaker 2: probably you know, if you're not our best three point shooter,
- 6:51Speaker 2: you're right up there with them. I go make shots,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you get a chance, and they leave you open, make shots,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and she did, and.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I just.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You know, I think we have a team that's got
- 7:03Speaker 2: kids that can make shots. So but you know, life
- 7:07Speaker 2: on the road is like that, y'all. Some nights you're
- 7:09Speaker 2: gonna make more than others. Some nights you're not. And
- 7:12Speaker 2: that's when you've got to find another way to help
- 7:14Speaker 2: us win. When your SHOT's not falling, you got to
- 7:18Speaker 2: help me win another way. It's not well, take me out,
- 7:22Speaker 2: it's let me help you win another way. Let me guard,
- 7:25Speaker 2: let me defend, let me rebound, let me be a
- 7:28Speaker 2: great help side defender. You know, there's all kinds of
- 7:31Speaker 2: ways that you can can help us win. I think
- 7:34Speaker 2: that's the struggle with any young person. Their ego thinks
- 7:38Speaker 2: they got to go in and score. That's you know,
- 7:43Speaker 2: we have people on this team that can do that.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You know, our five players are shooting sixty and seventy
- 7:49Speaker 2: percent from the floor, like Taylor and Kyla are shooting
- 7:54Speaker 2: a phenomenal number. Well, we need to play inside out.
- 7:58Speaker 3: You know, our.
- 8:01Speaker 2: My video guy Connor, did some research and like our
- 8:05Speaker 2: shooting percentage is in the fifties when when we play
- 8:10Speaker 2: you know, inside out, when we don't, when we don't
- 8:13Speaker 2: get a paint touch, it's like nineteen percent. So you've
- 8:18Speaker 2: got to realize, hey, we probably need to get a
- 8:21Speaker 2: paint touch. That's not necessarily the five player. That's the
- 8:25Speaker 2: guard getting into the paint. It's a kickout for three,
- 8:29Speaker 2: it's it's a jump stop in a mid range.
- 8:32Speaker 3: All those things are are part of that.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So that I do believe we have kids that can
- 8:37Speaker 2: make shots, and that includes a three point shot.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I know that's been a.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Topic of conversation for this group, and that's fine. But
- 8:47Speaker 2: some nights you're going to get that. Some nights you're not.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And you know, I think we proved the other night
- 8:52Speaker 2: that we made them get out of his own you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: he was down there, coach was down there shaking his
- 8:57Speaker 2: head and I had to tell him afterwards, I go,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you know, you caught us on the wrong night. You know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: we were pretty smart and after Thursday night, and we
- 9:04Speaker 2: played really good. Our defense was really good. Offensively, we
- 9:08Speaker 2: made shots. Look, when Booker goes ten for thirteen and
- 9:12Speaker 2: Rory's eight for eleven, we're gonna have a chance to
- 9:15Speaker 2: win every night. Then you throw in a six for
- 9:18Speaker 2: seven from three with Jordan Lee, it's gonna be hard
- 9:21Speaker 2: to guard us.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Thanks Mark, let's got to know it.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Hey, Vic, you talked about your conversation with Jordan after
- 9:31Speaker 4: the Notre Dame game. When a freshman is you know,
- 9:33Speaker 4: has a couple of games where they're not shooting or
- 9:35Speaker 4: maybe playing like they want, what are the conversations like
- 9:39Speaker 4: for you with them? And is Jordan somebody that even
- 9:41Speaker 4: needs a conversation like that? I mean she kind of
- 9:44Speaker 4: turned it around in a pretty major way this past weekend.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Well, I think my conversation with Jordan, it was actually
- 9:51Speaker 2: with jordanan Brie Preston was Look, you know you didn't
- 9:57Speaker 2: play a lot Thursday night. I don't think that'll ever
- 10:00Speaker 2: happen again, So be ready. Keep working those kids. Both
- 10:05Speaker 2: those kids, you know, they're part of the four that
- 10:08Speaker 2: get out early.
- 10:09Speaker 3: And they're just great kids.
- 10:12Speaker 2: They invest in their game, they want to be great,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and I just wanted them to know. Look, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 2: sometimes you get in those games like the Notre Dame game,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and as a coach, you rely on those veterans because
- 10:25Speaker 2: you have confidence and trusting them, and you're still trying to,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you know, maybe figure out some of your newer, newer
- 10:32Speaker 2: players and don't know how they're going to respond in
- 10:34Speaker 2: those moments.
- 10:35Speaker 3: And so I just wanted them to know.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Hey, you guys, continue to do what you do, get
- 10:42Speaker 2: ready and be prepared. And both those kids have been
- 10:45Speaker 2: great all year, and uh, you know they're going to
- 10:49Speaker 2: have some ups and downs, and you know they had
- 10:52Speaker 2: them in the Notre Dame game. They had them. You
- 10:54Speaker 2: know they've had them in other games. But I'm we're
- 10:57Speaker 2: going to play through it. You know, we're gonna we're
- 10:59Speaker 2: gonna learn from it. Those two really work hard every day.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I mean, they're they're sponges. And uh, you know Jordan
- 11:06Speaker 2: Lee is she's she's not only in here working, but
- 11:10Speaker 2: you know she's, oh she's really smart, Like that's going
- 11:14Speaker 2: to be a doctor one day. We may all be
- 11:15Speaker 2: going to her at some point in our life. She's
- 11:19Speaker 2: she's really really sharp in school and doing a great
- 11:22Speaker 2: job there as well. And you know that's that's one
- 11:25Speaker 2: of the reasons she's here. She she's she wants that
- 11:28Speaker 2: that medical degree, and she'll get it, there's no doubt
- 11:32Speaker 2: about it. So anyway, I think those kids, I just
- 11:36Speaker 2: wanted them to know, a I've got confidence in them
- 11:39Speaker 2: and you know, be ready, And of course they both were.
- 11:42Speaker 3: The other night. Good Brian Vic.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Going back to uh Thursday night, did it? Did it
- 11:52Speaker 5: bother you more about who was turning the ball over?
- 11:56Speaker 5: I mean it was your veterans as opposed to you know,
- 11:59Speaker 5: your freshman out there being freshmen?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Is that what he touch a little bit more than
- 12:03Speaker 3: anything else.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing, Brian, was how we did it,
- 12:07Speaker 2: I mean unforced. You know, Coach Blair used to call
- 12:14Speaker 2: them eye passes. We had a lot of eye passes,
- 12:18Speaker 2: you know, where you look good if they catch it
- 12:20Speaker 2: and if they don't, you know, in their fifty fifties,
- 12:23Speaker 2: I call them fifty fifties.
- 12:26Speaker 3: And you know it just we made some really poor decisions.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I don't know, if you looked at the box if
- 12:32Speaker 2: you had a turnover in that game, you either had
- 12:36Speaker 2: three or five. Nobody had one or two. You either
- 12:40Speaker 2: had three or five. And so I just think it's
- 12:45Speaker 2: decision making. It's kids trying to make things happen. You know,
- 12:50Speaker 2: they're trying to try and there, you know, to make
- 12:52Speaker 2: it happen. But sometimes just playing old vanilla, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 2: it's pretty good. I don't need all the relish and
- 13:00Speaker 2: onions on my hot dog. I just need a plain
- 13:02Speaker 2: old hot dog sometimes. And so I think, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 2: that's the thing, you know, when you're playing the game
- 13:12Speaker 2: is just blue collar plane, old vanilla, grind it out.
- 13:18Speaker 2: You're on the road. We've got to take care of
- 13:20Speaker 2: the ball, you know. Sunday Rory had zero turnovers. Madison
- 13:25Speaker 2: Bookers zero turnovers. We're gonna have a chance to win
- 13:28Speaker 2: a lot of games when those two are taking care
- 13:30Speaker 2: of the ball like that. So we had I think
- 13:33Speaker 2: five turnovers at halftime Sunday and then we had eight
- 13:35Speaker 2: in the second half. Some of that some of those
- 13:38Speaker 2: kids coming off the bench. You know, you've heard me
- 13:42Speaker 2: talk about continuity through substitution, and so we've got to
- 13:49Speaker 2: get better there. But yeah, I just think a lot
- 13:53Speaker 2: of it was just trying too hard. It's a two
- 13:57Speaker 2: three zone, y'all. That's it. I mean, we just we
- 14:02Speaker 2: got to be better. We worked really hard on it,
- 14:05Speaker 2: to be honest with you. The next day we had
- 14:07Speaker 2: twenty eight turnovers on Friday and practice, so it wasn't
- 14:11Speaker 2: any better and we were working on it. But then
- 14:14Speaker 2: Sunday was much better. So these kids will get it again.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Rory Harmon is getting better and better, y'all every day.
- 14:24Speaker 2: So she looked to me like her old self Sunday,
- 14:29Speaker 2: pull up and transition, get into her spot. I don't
- 14:33Speaker 2: think she took a bad shot. If she did, she
- 14:36Speaker 2: might have taken one. And she went eight for eleven,
- 14:41Speaker 2: no turnovers. I don't know how many assists she had,
- 14:44Speaker 2: but I'm sure she had several, and so that's always
- 14:49Speaker 2: good to see.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Real quick coaches.
- 14:51Speaker 5: One quick follow up, a little bigger picture the game itself,
- 14:56Speaker 5: the Notre Dame game, obviously, in this game against a
- 15:01Speaker 5: high level team, and.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Then I don't know how much you saw, but.
- 15:07Speaker 5: That game in the highlights got an incredible run on
- 15:09Speaker 5: Sports Center after that, Just what did what did? What
- 15:13Speaker 5: do you think of the whole SEC A SEC challenge
- 15:16Speaker 5: concept in terms of the type of matchups you're gonna
- 15:20Speaker 5: get to play in it.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Well, my initial response is I hope they send Notre
- 15:27Speaker 2: Dame back to us next year.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I think it's only fair.
- 15:31Speaker 2: You know, we went up there, we played them in
- 15:33Speaker 2: front of a pretty good crowd. It was a good environment. Again,
- 15:42Speaker 2: not taking anything from them. Wasn't our best night obviously
- 15:44Speaker 2: with twenty three turnovers. Hadalgo played really good and in look,
- 15:50Speaker 2: I think people acknowledge that because she went against somebody
- 15:55Speaker 2: really good in in in in Rory.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I mean, those two went at it, and.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So I think, you know, from the matchup standpoint, I
- 16:06Speaker 2: hope they send them back to us next year.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I just think it's only fair.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Don't send me somebody different wouldn't be fair to them,
- 16:14Speaker 2: whoever that different person is.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You know, we're going to do this to me. The
- 16:18Speaker 3: right thing to.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Do is is send them back to us next year
- 16:23Speaker 2: in a return. But you know, I don't mind the
- 16:28Speaker 2: sec ACC challenge, which we could have held up our
- 16:31Speaker 2: end of the bargain and won the game.
- 16:32Speaker 3: But we went into a top ten opponent.
- 16:36Speaker 2: They moved up from I think ten to six, or
- 16:39Speaker 2: maybe we dropped to six. They moved up to eight,
- 16:43Speaker 2: so obviously you know it wasn't viewed. It's too bad
- 16:47Speaker 2: of a loss that we only dropped two spots and
- 16:50Speaker 2: they didn't jump us.
- 16:51Speaker 3: So you know, I like it.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's fine with me if we didn't play that game,
- 16:57Speaker 2: we'd try to schedule.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Somebody like that anyway.
- 17:01Speaker 2: But I think it's only fair that, you know, in
- 17:04Speaker 2: my mind, they returned to us next year.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Sometimes that works out. I know with the SEC Big
- 17:12Speaker 1: Twelve Challenge games, you didn't always play the same team
- 17:18Speaker 1: in back to back years. You might play one team
- 17:21Speaker 1: when they kind of you ever do really well. I'm
- 17:26Speaker 1: trying to think if they did it one time they
- 17:28Speaker 1: did it with Tennessee, the men did it with Tennessee.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Had that remember when when Texas won by one point,
- 17:35Speaker 1: when Rick Barnes came into the Irwin Center and fifteen
- 17:38Speaker 1: two run by Tennessee at the very end of the
- 17:39Speaker 1: game or something ridiculous. Yeah, and Jaxson's won like fifty
- 17:42Speaker 1: fifty or fifty two. And then remember they played the
- 17:46Speaker 1: return game in Knoxville and Tennessee won. Now, but it's
- 17:51Speaker 1: more the exception than the rule, and some of that
- 17:55Speaker 1: is because of size of the conferences, and some of
- 17:57Speaker 1: it is also because of they're trying to get the
- 18:01Speaker 1: best matchups, and one team that's really good one year
- 18:03Speaker 1: might not be that good going into the next year,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and vice versa, and they project what ahead. I think
- 18:08Speaker 1: Texas and Notre Dame will both be good next year.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I don't think there's any doubt about that. So Vix's
- 18:12Speaker 1: point is well taken for sure. All Right, we have
- 18:16Speaker 1: more coming up. Stay with us here on sports Medio
- 18:17Speaker 1: AM thirteen under his own
