- 0:50It's Liam Nelson. Hey, it's me.
- 0:52Shout out to Spider Movie and Storage for sending a box truck
- 0:55to get me here. You're very Here we are in the
- 0:59world's lowest basement. I love this place.
- 1:01I I got to the headline here last a couple of nights ago.
- 1:04Yeah. And then the green room is a
- 1:06good what? Jacob, what do you, what would
- 1:08you say the height of this green room is 5/10/12?
- 1:10Yeah, 10. All right.
- 1:13We're making up numbers now though, 510.
- 1:15Gotcha, gotcha. Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm a good 524.
- 1:19So it's not, but here we are. Thank you for having me.
- 1:22I'm so excited to be. Here and I and you know I.
- 1:24It feels fitting for the movie. I was kind of like, should we
- 1:27make him stand? Yeah.
- 1:28Podcast. And then I thought, no, no, no.
- 1:31Well, in order for me to speak, my airway doesn't can't be at a
- 1:3390° I think, so we gotta. Yeah.
- 1:36So we have to, yeah, it's kind of that's a workplace
- 1:39accommodation. Yeah.
- 1:40Yeah, OSHA. And I am disabled so.
- 1:42Yeah. So watch out, watch out, watch
- 1:45out. We're coming for you.
- 1:46You ever heard ADA? Yeah.
- 1:47Hello. OK, What do you have going on?
- 1:50I am here touring, so I I headlined in Denver a couple
- 1:54days ago, but I will be headlining in Kansas City this
- 1:56weekend. I don't know when this is going
- 1:58up, but this will. Probably go up in a couple of
- 2:00weeks. OK, so a few weeks ago I was in
- 2:02Kansas City. It was a really cool show.
- 2:05I just, I'm just bragging about how fun it was.
- 2:06I'll be in Chicago April 6th. I'll be headlining Zanies
- 2:10Chicago out there. I'll be doing Seattle March
- 2:1415th. The venue has not been
- 2:16determined yet, but there will be a show.
- 2:18I swear to God some venue will take me.
- 2:21And then I have known a few other headlining shows.
- 2:23Liam Nelson, comedy.com, you can see all my dates.
- 2:25And then I have a podcast for those who get it, where I talk
- 2:28with disabled comics and just disabled creatives about living
- 2:32with disability and just kind of all different, like experiences
- 2:34that are adjacent to disability, but like for a disabled
- 2:37audience. So if you're a disabled out
- 2:39there, yeah, I got a bunch of stuff for you.
- 2:41I'm going to say that this, this audience, we got a lot of them.
- 2:44Hey, movie watchers tend to be we We weren't out running
- 2:48around. We were inside monitoring,
- 2:49modifying. Sides safe.
- 2:51Safe and laughing. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:54Laughing the pain away. Exactly.
- 2:56Well, that's awesome. I love, I love having other
- 2:58podcasters on the show, love having comics on the show, you
- 3:01know, and, and you could say that comics are also people who
- 3:04get it, even though I'm not a stand up comic.
- 3:06That's sort of like. Being a comedian is sort of a
- 3:08disability. Yes, it really and I've always
- 3:11said that. At least socially, yes, you
- 3:13can't. You're stunted by the fact that
- 3:15you can't get through one conversation without saying
- 3:17something you wrote 2 days ago. Yeah, and saying, OK, I know
- 3:20this is in a bit that I wrote. OK, but wait.
- 3:22But is this funny? Yeah.
- 3:24Can you guys punch this up a little bit?
- 3:26Yeah. Could you help me?
- 3:27Or giving other people unsolicited punch UPS?
- 3:30Yes. Do you believe that I actually
- 3:31got into stand up to make friends after all my friends
- 3:35went off to college and boy, what was I thinking?
- 3:38Boy, what were you thinking? Here we are, just got carried
- 3:41away. OK, name them.
- 3:43Who are some of your favorite friends in comedy?
- 3:45Ty Colgate who I'm currently sharing a motel room with.
- 3:47I did my first ever show on his bar show.
- 3:50It was just fun. John Marcos Raisi's done a lot
- 3:55of great things for me. He's really fun touring with
- 3:56him. I'm his full time feature.
- 3:59Me and Ty both share that job. So fun.
- 4:01We're kind of three amigos style touring around a lot of time.
- 4:04OK, love that. Yeah.
- 4:05I mean, those are really dusty Slay Samarelle.
- 4:08Both people who like believed to me early on were very helpful.
- 4:10Lucy from Zany's Nashville. She's not a comic, but she's a
- 4:14Booker. She helped me out a lot, but I'd
- 4:16say that's about the list of people who've like really helped
- 4:18me out company. It's not a super long one, but.
- 4:21Yeah, and if you thought that you were supposed to be on that
- 4:23list and you weren't, I think that you should be a better
- 4:25friend. Yeah, file a file a file a
- 4:26report with my office. We'll get it amended if you, if
- 4:30you, you know, show me some documentation of you not being a
- 4:33Dick to me. Yeah, totally.
- 4:34But be be careful of ADA. Yeah, shut up.
- 4:37I'll. Make out there.
- 4:38I got all sorts of forms that I can fill out all.
- 4:41Right, you are not going to believe the amount.
- 4:43Of four, I am litigious as fuck, yeah.
- 4:45But guess what? The font dyslexic friendly.
- 4:47It's. True.
- 4:48It's Braille. It's all Braille.
- 4:50You'll you're going to feel my me sueing your ass, all right?
- 4:53Feel the just terror. Yeah.
- 4:57Love that. Very intimidating.
- 4:58Very intimidating. OK, so you got into comedy when
- 5:02your friends went to college? Yeah, I was working in video
- 5:05full time and then all my friends left for college because
- 5:07they, you know, had dreams and such.
- 5:09And I was like producing a show with this guy, Steve Whitmire,
- 5:12who was Kermit the Frog after Henson passed away.
- 5:14So it's just the two of us producing a show in my studio,
- 5:18like, for three years. Yeah.
- 5:20On page just like. But as in some some of my
- 5:23favorites I've ever worked on. Check it out, cave in on
- 5:26YouTube. It's just me and him.
- 5:27Do an Internet troll character call in show where we do
- 5:30elaborate, like Muppet like sketches in the middle where
- 5:33it's like musical numbers and all sorts of crazy shit.
- 5:36But yeah. So then that's when I got into
- 5:38comedy. And then I slowly but surely
- 5:39kind of got into it full time. So now it's now it's the full
- 5:42time gig, so. Wow, Yeah, that's awesome.
- 5:45From being an unpaid Muppet guy. Yeah, yeah, to being paid and.
- 5:51Wedding videographer slash 2 Chainz music video producer Did
- 5:55a lot of like rap videos for a minute there.
- 5:58Then Lotto's manager threw a beer bottle at my head and I was
- 6:00like, maybe I should quit this. I think they call that a multi
- 6:03high phase. Yeah, that's part of why my hair
- 6:05is gone, because I started losing my hair at 20 because I
- 6:07was so stressed out. That's not a lie.
- 6:10Yeah. Totally.
- 6:11Yeah, but you didn't. I mean, here's the thing, you
- 6:14wear it probably you don't have to wear like a helmet to dodge
- 6:16the. It's true.
- 6:17No, I didn't dodge it. It just didn't hit me.
- 6:19Thank God because I I did not move.
- 6:21I did not even flinch to try to dodge.
- 6:24I said actually, please hit me. Lobotomy, please.
- 6:26Oh, if they hit me, our insurance and I would not be
- 6:30working ever again, I said. But you know, it's all good.
- 6:33But. They wouldn't be here.
- 6:34Exactly and so I like that I'm I have to, you know, participate
- 6:38in life still it's. Absolutely.
- 6:40And, and, and we're more grateful than anyone.
- 6:43Yeah, I appreciate it. Yeah, of course.
- 6:44OK, so I'm guessing that like, I'm just gonna infer that your
- 6:50that your artistic style may have been informed by surrealist
- 6:55weird postmodern Holy Grail. Type not on Holy Grail
- 6:59specifically like not like this is not like oh things tight like
- 7:02like that. This movie specifically I think
- 7:06I saw over 100 times and then haven't seen since I was 12.
- 7:12So like between like 6 and like or maybe like 13.
- 7:15I maybe watch it like one more time on like a public gathering.
- 7:18But like, I don't I don't remember like seeking out to
- 7:21watch it again. Yeah, after that point in my
- 7:22life. But like before that there was I
- 7:26swear to God. I mean, my family would watch it
- 7:28together. My mom would quote it
- 7:30constantly. Like that is still good.
- 7:34Like she's definitely watching this.
- 7:35I definitely sent this to her because hey, mom, hey mom, we're
- 7:37watching your favorite movie. It's she will.
- 7:41It's a good 60% of her jokes still to this day are just
- 7:44reference just her quoting this movie because it's like, I mean
- 7:49it is iconically funny. Like it's I think out of all the
- 7:51things Monty Python put together, like this is like the
- 7:53thing that defines like them at their peak, you know, like them
- 7:56like doing it the best. And then I don't, I, I think
- 7:59just like it's so interesting as a kid for I found it funny for
- 8:05like a totally different set of reasons.
- 8:07And I find it funny now. Like I, I can still probably
- 8:09quote a good half the movie. And like when we brought up like
- 8:13doing this movie, I remember I was like, oh, I was like going
- 8:16through some of the like the scenes in my head and I was like
- 8:18getting new jokes in real time that I did not get before.
- 8:21Like there's a whole intro sequence where they talk about
- 8:23like, oh, the person doing this writing has been sacked.
- 8:26And like, I thought that was like a football player, like
- 8:28they someone ran in and tackled them.
- 8:31And then but that's just being British fired.
- 8:34And I thought it was a much higher stakes scenario.
- 8:37And I remember I would sit there and cackle because I'm like,
- 8:40these guys are just getting tackled left and right.
- 8:42And no, they're just getting fired.
- 8:44Oh my God, did you imagine like the the writers as football
- 8:48players? Or was it like football players
- 8:50came in out of nowhere? No, it was like, I imagine there
- 8:53was a guy doing this job and then another guy who wanted the
- 8:56job came into the studio furiously angry, wrestled that
- 9:01man to the ground, hooked to helm.
- 9:03And then another guy came in and just like 1 after one, just a
- 9:06pile of bodies on the floor as they like clamor over each other
- 9:10trying to like be the one typing this intro dialogue.
- 9:14Incredible So. That's.
- 9:16I I honestly miss when I thought it was that because I was like,
- 9:19man, that was really. That was way funny.
- 9:21I remember thinking that was like a really like, one of my
- 9:23favorite parts of the movie was like reading that.
- 9:25And so I'm like, oh, these guys are just beating each other up
- 9:27and we're just reading about it. Like, yeah, you're like there's
- 9:29a dogpile in. I know that's so.
- 9:31Funny, I think that just shows you how vivid my imagination it
- 9:33was and like how little I read because that I was like, oh wow,
- 9:36reading's actually kind of cool when it's about people beating
- 9:39each other up it. Absolutely is because and you
- 9:41know what reading the like reading the intro credits for
- 9:45anything is reading. Yeah, you know, and if you have
- 9:48and if you have closed captions on movies, that's reading.
- 9:51Yeah, I I've read the back of several books and as an
- 9:56elementary schooler, I was trained to not read because I
- 9:58did like the the advanced reading points system.
- 10:00Oh yeah. And so I would just skim books
- 10:03and then do well enough on the test to get the points.
- 10:06So I read Gone with the Wind in 3rd grade.
- 10:10God read you got 72 points for it.
- 10:13Didn't. I don't remember shit that
- 10:15happens in that. That is wild.
- 10:18And is that, is that real? What, what you just said?
- 10:21Yeah, yeah, Yeah, that actually. Happened.
- 10:22Oh yeah I read it in 3rd grade and I I got for some reason they
- 10:25had that in an elementary school library.
- 10:27Why are even 11 year olds don't need to be?
- 10:29Yeah, they don't need to read that.
- 10:31They don't need to understand like poverty.
- 10:33Yeah, if they if they don't know it.
- 10:36Yeah, it's it's it's very high level.
- 10:38I don't know. It was, it was.
- 10:39Well, that's. So funny.
- 10:41Yeah, so, but I my Python I sat through full way every time so.
- 10:45You know what is is interesting, you know, I'm re watching
- 10:48Sopranos right now and, you know, in in any mob or crime
- 10:53film being sacked is being killed.
- 10:57Yeah, yeah. So, you know, the stakes could
- 10:59have been high, low, anything in between.
- 11:03And I'm glad that as a child, your imagination went to just
- 11:07football. Tacos.
- 11:08Yeah, I had not watched Sopranos yet.
- 11:11Hadn't even skimmed it. That was a no, no, no, yeah, I
- 11:14was, I was too busy watching Monty Python loop, which I think
- 11:19there's definitely some moments in there.
- 11:20I'm like drop on reflection, like maybe those were.
- 11:22I mean, I think they definitely flew over my head, but there was
- 11:24some moments weren't the nuns like super horny?
- 11:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember.
- 11:29I remember that. I mean, my mom was always like,
- 11:31sex is fine, violence is bad, but I'm like, there's a lot of
- 11:34violence in that one too. Yeah.
- 11:35I watch a rabbit chew a man's neck open like and I was like,
- 11:39yeah, what a cute little Bunny. Get that guy, get him on.
- 11:44His lips so stupid. Oh yeah, the black nugget that
- 11:47was. Oh my God.
- 11:48The Black Knight. Amazing.
- 11:50But I feel like the scratch, I feel like the violence in this
- 11:55movie is so stupid. Yeah, that it is almost.
- 12:00I mean, I don't know. I don't have kids, so I have No,
- 12:02I have had no idea. I think my parents were just
- 12:05willing to make like compromises on that if they liked the movie
- 12:07enough. Totally.
- 12:08They're like, well, we're all gonna watch.
- 12:10That I also remember watching episodes of the Chappelle Show
- 12:12with my dad. That sounds like yeah, they
- 12:14should be watching this. Probably not.
- 12:15But you know, it was fine. Because people are parents
- 12:19doesn't mean that they have to give up what they like.
- 12:21Yeah, exactly. I think they should watch
- 12:23whatever they want. It's.
- 12:24Fine. Yeah, they're fine.
- 12:25They're gonna learn eventually. Yeah, yes, no, it was good.
- 12:28I I think my thought was like, it's I, I only attribute.
- 12:33I don't remember ever having like nightmares from it.
- 12:35I remember only like thinking parts of it were really, really
- 12:37fun. Like the whole the bit of them
- 12:39running and never getting closer.
- 12:42One of the best of all time. Just like the he's like running
- 12:46through the distance and he just keeps starting over.
- 12:50And haven't we all? And then all of a sudden, he's
- 12:51there. No explanation.
- 12:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think my favorite part of this
- 12:56movie is that it all, despite the fact that I did just say off
- 13:01air that it's not exactly a plot.
- 13:03It's just like a bunch of scenes that eventually do come
- 13:06together. Hi, Winnie.
- 13:09But there is a full circle moment where in the beginning
- 13:13when they go to the castle and the French guy is like he says I
- 13:20spit at you and he says that they already have a whole like a
- 13:23rail. He's like, why would I want one?
- 13:26I have one or like I can't remember exactly.
- 13:29We only have one, yeah. And that somehow doesn't
- 13:34register. Bit at you a second time.
- 13:38Is so stupid. There'll be a lot of bad accents
- 13:40in this one folks. Just a heads up.
- 13:42Well. It's not like the accents that
- 13:44they had were good, no. That's the point.
- 13:46But that's why they were fun to do, because they were doing them
- 13:48bad so we could do them bad because that's what they were
- 13:51doing. Yeah, exactly.
- 13:52We could all just kind of be stupid.
- 13:54Yeah, because they were being stupid.
- 13:55It was good. But stupid in a when I say
- 13:58stupid, I mean it in like, such a loving way.
- 14:00Yeah, I really mean it in like as a compliment.
- 14:03Yeah, and then that's the scene where they launched the farm
- 14:05animals at them afterwards, right?
- 14:07Right. Yeah, they want the cow just
- 14:09comes in like crushes the what is it called, the guy with
- 14:15coconuts. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the horse.
- 14:19The horse. The man, the man horse.
- 14:21Yeah, I feel like the. That bit too, Oh my God, I
- 14:25remember the first time I saw that.
- 14:26That's a six year old who's like, I thought he was on a
- 14:29horse and he's just a guy. Can you believe?
- 14:33It that was like prime 6 year old like that.
- 14:35I think that's what got me to rewatch it.
- 14:37I was like, is that the one with the guys with the coconuts?
- 14:39I was like, hell yeah. You're like, I could pretend to
- 14:41be a horse. Yeah.
- 14:42My sister this morning sent me a video of my niece on one of
- 14:45those, like, you know, like the stick horses that kids play
- 14:48with. And she was kind of like,
- 14:50galloping around in the front and I and I thought, that's
- 14:53Monty Python. Yeah.
- 14:55Someone someone clank some coconuts.
- 14:57Someone get that girl a coconut boy.
- 14:59Now someone get her Squire or some coconut she.
- 15:02Needs. She needs it yeah.
- 15:04I was like, there are some things that are truly timeless.
- 15:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:08I think that that is what makes this movie so timeless is that
- 15:13it's all bad, surreal practical effects.
- 15:18And it's also, I think they're related to the King Arthur
- 15:20story, like make it ties it into like a cultural touchstone to
- 15:23where like people get what they're making fun of because
- 15:27everyone is vaguely aware of like the King Arthur story and
- 15:31like lore, especially I imagine in the UK more so yeah.
- 15:35But yeah, it's like it's all the different, but like the nature
- 15:39of it being like all these little scenes make it so
- 15:42interesting to watch the whole time.
- 15:43Like even if you don't love the one that they're doing right
- 15:45now, give it 3 minutes and they're you'll be on doing a
- 15:47totally different bit in a totally different place with
- 15:50totally different characters like.
- 15:52Totally. I think like it's interesting.
- 15:54I often have like criticisms of movies that feel like they
- 15:59should be 3 to 5 minute sketches that have been extended into a
- 16:03feature film, but this one doesn't feel like that because
- 16:06each scene actually is its own unique sketch.
- 16:09You know what I'm saying? It's like they've.
- 16:11But they do tie in because the the King Arthur character comes
- 16:15through and it's like experiences the the craziness of
- 16:18all these different scenarios, like either after that happened
- 16:21or while they're happening. Yeah, totally.
- 16:23And I love, I love goofy anachronism.
- 16:26Like I love the I love the British police.
- 16:31Yeah, I love. Oh yeah, I totally forgot about
- 16:33that whole like how the cops arrest them at the end.
- 16:36I forgot about that. Oh my God, yeah.
- 16:38I had honestly forgotten how this movie ended cuz it's cuz it
- 16:42had been several years since I'd seen it.
- 16:44And the fact that it, it ends with the basically it's like a
- 16:48paparazzi shot of them getting arrested.
- 16:50And then and then the cop or whoever is with them like hits
- 16:55the camera and then it's over and the screen goes black back
- 16:58and they play the music for like 5 full minutes.
- 17:02And we were, I was watching it with some friends last night and
- 17:05we were all sitting there and for like a full 20 seconds just
- 17:09kind of waiting for the next thing to happen.
- 17:11And then someone was like, wait, I think that that is the end of
- 17:15the movie. And then I was like, Oh yeah, I
- 17:18forgot that. But it was so funny.
- 17:19I skipped ahead like 20 seconds and it was still playing the
- 17:22same song. And I laughed and laughed and
- 17:24laughed. Yeah, I I think that's
- 17:27definitely early on me watching that movie.
- 17:29That's where it kind of lost me. I think when it like broke the
- 17:324th wall, I was like, all right, all the fun medieval stuff is
- 17:34done. I'm out of here.
- 17:35Like I don't, I don't give a shit about them.
- 17:37Like transcending like the barrier of comedy right now.
- 17:41I don't need that. I just want more guys getting
- 17:44their arm cut off and being fine with it.
- 17:46I wore guys on stilts saying niche a bunch of times.
- 17:50I love those guys one night to say me or icky icky.
- 17:58The nights who formally until recently said me, yeah, yeah.
- 18:02I feel like that part was what what kids around me most often
- 18:08quoted. Yeah.
- 18:09Do you think that this movie was made for like.
- 18:12I mean, obviously it's not like a children's movie.
- 18:13Do you? But do you think it was like
- 18:15made for kids, made for adults or?
- 18:17It's definitely the most kid friendly Monty Python thing they
- 18:20ever made because like I remember loving this movie,
- 18:23watching Life of Brian being like what the fuck is this?
- 18:26I was like, I was like, dude, the vibes here are so much worse
- 18:31than money 5 the Holy Grail. Everything else they make is a
- 18:34lot darker if you like. And this ones the most like
- 18:37whimsical yeah, thing that they do.
- 18:39Like even the sketch were like, I mean, it's like whimsically
- 18:42dark, but the sketch were like the guy asked for one more like
- 18:46he eats everything at the restaurant and then I throw like
- 18:48one more thin men that explodes into organs.
- 18:51Like I remember I watched that. My mom was like, oh, you like
- 18:53Holy Grail, let me show you this sketch.
- 18:54And then she remembered like as he was about to explode.
- 18:58That was then I'm like, I'm like, oh, like 7, see the sketch
- 19:03and then but we still like anytime we get full of
- 19:06restaurants, it's like, oh, just a whiff our thing here.
- 19:10And then and then you explode. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:13Organs. Yeah, totally.
- 19:14It was really more of a cautionary tale, the lot.
- 19:17No. I'm telling you, like my brain.
- 19:19I swear to God, I think I would be a much smarter person if I
- 19:22had never consumed any Monty Python because of the amount of
- 19:25brain space that is just permanently occupied with quotes
- 19:28from this film. Yeah, there's not really room
- 19:31for much else at all. No, no, not at all.
- 19:33I there is something I read on the Wikipedia page for this
- 19:38movie about there was going to be nudity and then they decided
- 19:42not to. You're I feel like maybe that
- 19:45would have been controversial with your mom, but maybe not.
- 19:47You said she was fine. She was she.
- 19:48Was like sexed up is fine by. She she told me and my friend to
- 19:52watch 16 candles. Oh, my sleepover one time and
- 19:57then I and then there's a nude scene and we both were like we
- 20:00ran out of the room because we were doing we were at his house
- 20:03like very strict parrots. So we like we like left the room
- 20:07and like got his mom to turn it off for us.
- 20:11He was a freak out like no, no, no, no please.
- 20:13It wasn't us. Oh my God, that.
- 20:18That is so honestly so sweet. So funny.
- 20:21So sweet. Yeah.
- 20:23It was more like, I didn't care that we were seeing it.
- 20:25I was just like, oh, I really hope no one sees us seeing it
- 20:27right now. Totally.
- 20:28You're like. Also, I don't really want to do
- 20:30this with my friend. I'll look at I'll look at a
- 20:33naked woman by myself on my computer, thank you very much.
- 20:36Yeah, like privacy of my own 9 year old.
- 20:38Yeah, totally. Like any respectful 9 year old
- 20:41OK, I did find, I did find this little anecdote from oh, this
- 20:47was from they they talked about it on the DVD the oh, the quest
- 20:52for the Holy Grail. OK, so castle anthrax was shark
- 20:56in one part of Dune where the costume designer advised against
- 21:00nudity instead dressing the girls in shifts.
- 21:03So I think that. Oh, so the nuns were initially
- 21:06supposed to be, like, naked? Yeah, yeah, that scene
- 21:10definitely felt like it was like supposed to be even hornier.
- 21:12And they like, got it. Toned it down a little bit, and
- 21:15I'm glad they did because if it was rated R, it would have been
- 21:19like, way fewer people would have seen it.
- 21:22Yeah. It would have been less
- 21:23accessible to people. I'm not saying, I'm not saying
- 21:26like, you know, cover those women up.
- 21:28Yeah, you know. Whatever.
- 21:29But like, you know. Like, like you don't.
- 21:32They don't need to be naked. In that scene, it's horny
- 21:34enough. Like we get, we got it.
- 21:36Like they're horned up. Like that's fine.
- 21:38I get it. They're in.
- 21:39They're in like silky robes. It's not like that comes across
- 21:42like, don't worry, you don't have to be more obvious about
- 21:46it. Yeah.
- 21:47Oh, there's one criticism I have a Holy Grail a little too subtle
- 21:50for. Me not horny enough?
- 21:53Really, it really, really makes you think you're.
- 21:56Wondering what's the subtext here?
- 21:58Yeah, what are they not telling? Us when that guy launched that
- 22:01cow with that guy. I wonder what that meant.
- 22:03What was the symbolism of the cow, you know, versus the versus
- 22:07the spit versus the versus the shit later?
- 22:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, Really deep. I read that this was This was
- 22:20financed by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Co producer
- 22:26Mike White, a cricket team called the Heartaches, founded
- 22:30by lyricist Tim Wright. And a Suicide Squad funding team
- 22:35is this. And three record companies,
- 22:37Island Records, Chrysalis Records and Charisma Records,
- 22:40the record that label that had released Python's early comedy
- 22:45albums OK and then. But those investors also
- 22:48received part of the proceeds from the 2005 musical Spam A
- 22:52lot. So they're laughing all the way
- 22:53that they. Yeah, they're getting.
- 22:54It you know. They should still around.
- 22:56Yeah, they just, they knew that no studio would fund the film
- 23:01and the rock stars saw it as a good tax write off because the
- 23:05top rate of UK income tax was as high as 90% at the time.
- 23:09That that does make sense. That film does have the vibe of
- 23:13like the people who were the most in charge are drugged out
- 23:17rock stars. Like the guy who's in charge of
- 23:20anger. Everyone like stays in line is
- 23:22also on like heroin. He said.
- 23:25Wouldn't it be funny if yeah? Say, what if we just, you know,
- 23:29that guy we like a lot? What if we just gave them a
- 23:33castle, let them kind of do whatever?
- 23:37No, that's great. I mean, I'm happy for him.
- 23:39That's how you know something's gonna be good.
- 23:41When a weird group comes together, it's either good or a
- 23:44psyop, yeah. Exactly, exactly.
- 23:47It's like either you're producing Pink Floyd's agenda,
- 23:52yeah, or they're saying make whatever weird shit you.
- 23:54People do love to make a theory about Pink Floyd, about it them
- 23:57having like the devil in their music, so maybe.
- 24:00And honestly, I think that it. Corrupted me this movie.
- 24:03This movie, this movie definitely has something
- 24:05demonic, and I mean that in a good way.
- 24:07Well, the Bunny, the Bunny the Bunny for sure.
- 24:10Yeah, definitely. And there is a lot of, like,
- 24:12lore about rabbits, bunnies being being like, satanic, like,
- 24:17they're kind of like cursed. Yeah, kind of like demon, demon
- 24:21creatures. Same with goats, right?
- 24:24It's like, yeah, yeah, goats. The thing is with the eyes on
- 24:26the side of their face. Yeah, pray.
- 24:28Yeah, so. Like, you know, pray do.
- 24:30You want to be a good person? Kill something.
- 24:32All right. OK, Kill and eat something else.
- 24:34Yeah, come on. If you want us to like you, I
- 24:37mean, I guess sheep are fine. Yeah, sheep are fine.
- 24:40Lambs are allowed, yeah. They're kind of cute.
- 24:44I guess lambs are good, sheep are are like you're too, you're
- 24:47a follower, which I guess is good for some religions.
- 24:50And then goat is always bad because either devil or eats
- 24:55your clothes. It's true.
- 24:57Yeah. Eats everything.
- 24:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:59There is that song by 90s band. Well, still active.
- 25:03Cake Sheep go to having goats go to hell.
- 25:07And I kind of take that in Yemen, you know, let's see what
- 25:11else, what other fun facts can I tell you about the filming of
- 25:15this? I mean, of course it's low
- 25:17budget. Didn't have to tell you that.
- 25:19But wait, what the? CGI was so good though.
- 25:24But I really thought that was a horse.
- 25:28I think I have a theory that studios that don't really want
- 25:34to finance films the way that they should use Monty Python as
- 25:39an example of like, you don't really need money, you can do
- 25:42anything. That's just a theory I have.
- 25:44Yeah, as someone who was requesting and funding from a
- 25:47lot of studios for a while, yeah.
- 25:49Now they're like, oh, but can you just be a genius and with
- 25:52nothing? And I was like, no, actually.
- 25:54No, I'm sorry, I'm not making swingers.
- 25:56I'm not making. I'm not making Monty Python.
- 25:59Like just do something you can shoot in your house.
- 26:01And I'm like, I don't why would I do that?
- 26:02I've. Seen where I live?
- 26:04Yeah, I don't want to. It's not a cast.
- 26:06My life is not film worthy. Yeah, that's that's cool that
- 26:12they were able to like, make some because it does feel very
- 26:16grand. You know, it's like it does,
- 26:18even though a lot of like the transitions are very like old
- 26:21school kind of hams, like ham festive, a lot of like the sets,
- 26:25you know, you're never like, oh, that's, you know, an obvious set
- 26:30or something. Like some of the castle scenes
- 26:31are like big and cool, you know? They really do and like the the
- 26:34big landscapes and the mountains behind them.
- 26:37They do a good job with it. Yeah.
- 26:38I mean, I imagine they probably shot those on location right in
- 26:40the lands. Or something like that.
- 26:41Yeah, I think that they did they Yeah, they they shot the the
- 26:48rabbit scene at the the Tom Nandashian mine OK, a hamlet
- 26:55southwest of a place I can't pronounce in Scotland.
- 27:02Yeah, I think they've got. See, this is one of those like,
- 27:06you know how people do like the Lord of the Rings tours.
- 27:08I would do a Monty Python Montreal location tour in
- 27:12Scotland or. Wherever you look, Oh my God,
- 27:14you absolutely should. I'd be like, oh, that's where
- 27:16the number of the counting was decided.
- 27:19Oh it's and it's 3. I mean, since the Holy Hand
- 27:22Grenade was thrown right there, that's incredible.
- 27:25And that's where the rabbit ate that guy's neck.
- 27:27Yeah, and history was made. Let's see.
- 27:31Oh, I'm so sorry to tell you, but at the start of the tale of
- 27:34Sir Robin, there's a slow I know, I'm so sorry.
- 27:38There's a slow camera zoom on a rocky scenery, the dark forest
- 27:42of Ewing. That's a still photograph of the
- 27:45gorge at Mount Buffalo National Park in Victoria, Australia.
- 27:49I know. Isn't that fucking?
- 27:50Well, the movies ruined. I know.
- 27:53I thought it was all real. I know.
- 27:55And now, now we've really just ruined it on.
- 27:59Illusion broken. You really had to.
- 28:01I know, I know that it was hard to do.
- 28:03You not actually like that? Yeah, Come on.
- 28:07I can't believe that I've asked you to suspend your disbelief.
- 28:10But wait. But wait.
- 28:12But wait. No, it was mostly shot on
- 28:15vacation in Scotland. Okay, all right, that's great.
- 28:17It's. Just that opening.
- 28:18Scene I'll go to. School for us, particularly
- 28:21around Dune, Castle Glencoe and Castle Stalker.
- 28:26I I bet I could convince my fiance to go there and she could
- 28:28do the Weathering Heights tour. I could do the do this one a.
- 28:32Little something for everybody. I do love though, that at any
- 28:35point that it becomes like too much to design the set, they
- 28:39just switch to the animation. Yeah, yeah, I love that.
- 28:42I love a little mixed medium. Like, you know, we, you
- 28:46obviously know that we couldn't afford to to create this Yeah in
- 28:51live action. So we're just gonna pivot?
- 28:54Yeah, it's, it's a good, I love, I love just seeing someone make
- 28:57the most out of what they can do.
- 28:59Like it's those things are fun too.
- 29:01They're they're like changes of pace from the rest of the movie
- 29:04too. I agree, yeah.
- 29:05And it's sort of like you said, if there's something that you're
- 29:07sort of getting bored of, like in 3 minutes, it's going to
- 29:09change. So they kind of like.
- 29:11In 3 minutes a guy's going to show up and stabbed literally
- 29:13everyone and then the scene will be over.
- 29:18Everyone, including including the the woman who was to be wed.
- 29:22But did she get stabbed? No, no, it was her.
- 29:25It was her. Her dad.
- 29:29Her dad, Yeah. Everyone gets stabbed except for
- 29:31her up there and then the guards are supposed to you stay here.
- 29:35Make sure that he doesn't leave. That I love.
- 29:39I love a joke that goes as long. As and they and they do that
- 29:43what four or five times in the movie where like it's like.
- 29:47The counting to three the. Nights you saying me is like
- 29:51they keep doing it like you say I'll do it to that's you again.
- 29:56The strawberry, the. French people are just one
- 29:59recurring bit. Totally.
- 30:01It's just so many like cut the music, they just are arguing for
- 30:05like 10 minutes straight. Yeah, exactly.
- 30:07It's fun. Yeah, it's fun and it I think
- 30:10that it inspires all of us to not let a joke die.
- 30:13Just keep going. Yeah, it does feel a little bit
- 30:16like there's moments that feel kind of curvier enthusiasm
- 30:19almost where it's like it's like a medieval curve where he's just
- 30:22like, well, fuck, like a stumble into a unfortunate situation
- 30:26again. Me again.
- 30:28And it just so happens that he's King Arthur the whole time, you
- 30:30know, like instead of fucking Larry David.
- 30:32Yeah, He's just like, oh, man, Can you believe these guys, man?
- 30:37I'm always getting myself into some sort of trouble.
- 30:43It's like absurdist humor, but like, as if we were all living
- 30:46in this King Arthur world. Like, that's the thing that's
- 30:48fun. Is that it?
- 30:50The suspension of disbelief is so easy to buy into and it's so
- 30:53easy to to feel like invested in this world.
- 30:58Yeah. And yeah.
- 30:59I think the early establishing stuff is good to bring out.
- 31:02The dead scene is fun, Yeah. The guys who hit themselves in
- 31:05the head with the board, yeah. There's just so many little
- 31:08things that you see early on that kind of get you into when
- 31:11he's arguing with the person who's digging in the dirt.
- 31:14Well, like, it's like, who? Who are you?
- 31:17I'm the king. King of what?
- 31:19King of what? The king of the Britons like.
- 31:21He's like, who are the Britons? Well, all of us you are.
- 31:26Do you feel like modern audiences are familiar with King
- 31:30Arthur? Like if this was made today,
- 31:32would people get it? Hey, I would hope so like am I
- 31:35that old to where like my childhood is not mirror like a a
- 31:39modern audience? I don't know.
- 31:40I don't. Know how old are you?
- 31:4126 OK. Well, I don't know, I guess
- 31:44listeners weigh in. Yeah, hey, hey, you 17 year olds
- 31:47out there watching this, Let me know if you know who King Arthur
- 31:51is. If your if your parents really
- 31:52love this podcast and you're. Sucking batch is.
- 31:57Then please let us know. I would think so, especially in
- 32:02in the UK, but it's almost like I don't know.
- 32:06It's not really that necessary to be super familiar with King
- 32:10Arthur. Yeah, you could think they've
- 32:11just like, made those all up and still find them funny, I think.
- 32:14Yeah, I think so. I think it's funnier when you
- 32:17understand the source material and you understand what they're
- 32:20making fun of. But on its own, I think it works
- 32:23for sure. OK, let's see.
- 32:26What else should we talk about? What are some of your favorite
- 32:29scenes we've talked about? I mean the.
- 32:31Rabbit one of course of the house iconic the Knights who say
- 32:34me the black knight where he gets his arms cut off Yeah it I
- 32:38I got beat up harder one time when I was getting bullied
- 32:43because I they hit me and I said tis just a scratch I've been
- 32:49then they were much meaner to me after that it was yeah it was
- 32:53tough but that seems great when he's just like a stump on the
- 32:57ground like I'll bite you I'll. Bite.
- 33:02You I'm trying to think what other ones I I remember.
- 33:04I particularly didn't love the one where the guy comes in and
- 33:07stabs everyone because I felt bad for all the people.
- 33:09Who could? Innocent people.
- 33:10I was a very like an empathetic kid, so I definitely felt bad
- 33:13for like the innocent people who got like murdered in this movie.
- 33:18A lot of the, a lot of the nights, there were very few of
- 33:20them left by the end. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:23I'm trying to think of what other scenes I really liked.
- 33:27What about the bridge scene? How do you feel about the bridge
- 33:29scene? It's where like they have to
- 33:31answer 3 questions and then if they get the question wrong then
- 33:36they get launched into like a like a Canyon.
- 33:40Yeah, the the guy with the horns.
- 33:43Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I like that one.
- 33:44Yeah, he, he's like asking some people easy questions because
- 33:49some of them are questions. He's like, what's your favorite
- 33:51color? And then one guy says blue, but
- 33:54he didn't really mean blue. And he?
- 33:55Didn't want favorite color. What is your quest?
- 34:01Yeah. And then and then he asked the
- 34:02question about velocity with swallow.
- 34:05Yeah. What is the air velocity of an
- 34:08unladen swallow? Yeah.
- 34:10And, and King Arthur says that's this kind of stuff that you need
- 34:13to know when you're a king. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:16There's no piece of knowledge that should go unknown.
- 34:20If you're if you're the king, you gotta know it all, yeah?
- 34:22Yeah doesn't blue no clear. It's like one guy gets lost cuz
- 34:27he doesn't post it for a. Color blue.
- 34:29No. Clear.
- 34:30Yeah. One time.
- 34:34Not one time. Several times when I was playing
- 34:37the game. Mash.
- 34:38Do you, were you familiar with MASH?
- 34:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 34:40So. So we would have.
- 34:43Millennials. I knew MASH.
- 34:44You know them. OK, great.
- 34:46You're familiar with millennials culture. 2IN museums.
- 34:48OK, I know. Yeah.
- 34:49Totally. I've studied your people's
- 34:51ancient culture. Antiques Rd. show So in our
- 34:54culture, we would play MASH and we would have a category of
- 34:58wedding dress color. And if you were the one who was
- 35:03like writing things down for MASH, like your friend is
- 35:05telling you what they want, you also got to be evil and include
- 35:11one of your own. So you would like include if it
- 35:14was like for who you're going to marry, you would put down like
- 35:16the ugliest fuck that you know, or you would put down like, you
- 35:19know, for for like number of kids that you'll have.
- 35:23It was like 25, that kind of thing.
- 35:26And for wedding dress color, I always wrote down clear.
- 35:32Hell yeah, just nude. Yeah, totally.
- 35:34Just a just a clear dress. Hell yeah, your raincoat.
- 35:37Yeah, exactly. So for some people, clear is
- 35:40their favorite color ID. Look, it was your favorite color
- 35:43to hurt your friend's life with. Yeah.
- 35:46It ruined your friend's wedding. Yeah.
- 35:48Totally. Yeah.
- 35:48Is that if you're white and you wear a clear dress, does that
- 35:51count as wearing white to a wedding?
- 35:53I I guess it depends on how tan you are.
- 35:55You've like really go to the beach before.
- 35:56Yeah, yeah. Did you get a stray tan before?
- 35:59Now? If you're if you're really
- 36:01pretty pale, if it's been a while since you've been in the
- 36:04sun and. Someone spills red wine on you
- 36:06and it's just a raincoat, so it does not.
- 36:08And so it's easy, Yeah. Doesn't matter if it rains on
- 36:11your wedding day, you're good. Yeah.
- 36:13So there are advantages. But yeah, if you answer blue
- 36:17when what you really need is clear, yeah, you're gonna get
- 36:19launched into that Canyon. I can't remember what they call
- 36:22it, but it is a funny name. The Canyon something.
- 36:25Despair. Yeah, something of.
- 36:27There's always there's a bunch of despair in the movie, like
- 36:30the blank of despair. Blanky blank of despair.
- 36:33Yeah, the paint of despair. No, that's prison's bride.
- 36:37Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 36:38So we're just that is I feel like those two have like are
- 36:41very much kindred. Absolutely.
- 36:43They're very much kindred spirits.
- 36:45What's? The types of bits that they do
- 36:46and like the characters and stuff.
- 36:48Yeah, I mean, even just the like the roll rolling down the hills
- 36:52in a Princess Bride that like never ends reminds me a lot of
- 36:56that. The whole trial of the three
- 36:58guys, The Princess Bride is very Monty Pythonia.
- 37:01It's like, that's definitely something King Arthur would have
- 37:03to do. Of.
- 37:04Course, and when he like laughs and then keels over dead like
- 37:08that's classic. Like Monty Python?
- 37:10Totally. Totally, and I also often mix
- 37:14this movie up with Robin Hood men and types.
- 37:16Yeah, that's another one. I feel like there was that that
- 37:18this was this movie first or were those first?
- 37:21This one was first this. Yeah, this kicked off the, like,
- 37:24parody medieval era. Yeah, because they're like, oh,
- 37:26Monty Python can do it. We can do it with hotter people.
- 37:29Totally. And more money, hotter people
- 37:32and more budget. I mean, even more actors.
- 37:35Yeah, people. I mean every actor playing one
- 37:37role, yeah. Yeah, instead of just John
- 37:39Cleese doing everything. When you were a kid, did you
- 37:43notice that it was like the same 5 actors playing everyone or
- 37:46were? For the most part, I I think I
- 37:48definitely was like, oh, there's that guy again.
- 37:50But like, I remember I just was like, I think at that point my
- 37:53mom was like an entertainment designer.
- 37:54So like she was like doing shows.
- 37:56So I understood that like when you have not a lot of budget,
- 38:00yeah, you got to do everything. I had seen like a one person
- 38:03show, I think before that point where they played multiple
- 38:06characters. So I was like, all right, this
- 38:08is like that. Kind of weird, but.
- 38:10Yeah, totally, totally. That's awesome.
- 38:12You're 7 years old and you're like, I understand a thing or
- 38:14two. I've been to the theater.
- 38:18You're like, I've seen a few avant-garde.
- 38:19Yeah, oh, oh, this is this is one of one of many pieces though
- 38:23I've I've actually should read my my column that I have in the
- 38:27local elementary. School newspaper, rather.
- 38:29You should skim it. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:31It wasn't much of A reader. Not much of A reader.
- 38:33But I loved, I loved watching adult movies.
- 38:36I was really like, yeah, show me whatever.
- 38:39Yeah, totally. It was good.
- 38:42Let's see, what else should we? What else should we get into the
- 38:47the Sir, Sir Robin not so quite as not so quite.
- 38:53Sorry, Sir Robin the night not quite so brave as Sir Lancelot.
- 38:58Man, that was hard. Let me try it again.
- 39:01Sir Robin not quite so brave as Sir Lancelot.
- 39:05And of course, the aptly name Sir Not appearing in this film.
- 39:09Yeah. Sir Robin Bradley ran away.
- 39:11Yeah, totally that. Was the 1 I loved like play for
- 39:15him as he's. Like the musical element of
- 39:18that. And then when they're all about
- 39:20when they like start singing and then they get interrupted.
- 39:24And also the the guy in his room by himself, God, what's his
- 39:29name? The one who is told that he
- 39:33can't leave the room. You stay here and make sure he
- 39:35doesn't leave and he's like pining and he sends the arrow
- 39:38and it hits so. They at every at every twist and
- 39:42turn he's trying to break into song and they keep like, no.
- 39:46No, no, no, no, no. I just want to no no, no.
- 39:53No, no, no. Yeah, that's one of my.
- 39:55And that's the one where where he shows up to murder everybody.
- 39:57Yeah, he purrs. The lady getting married.
- 39:59He he's there to save the guy in the power.
- 40:02Yeah. Who wants to sing?
- 40:04He just wants to. Think, yeah, I loved him.
- 40:08And I love, I love the recurring.
- 40:10Like, these people want it to be a musical, but it's not.
- 40:16Yeah, but the Broadway production is a musical.
- 40:20The Holy Grail. There's like, there's now like
- 40:25Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical in addition to
- 40:28Spamalot. So it's kind of like, yeah, at
- 40:31least I. At least I what's the
- 40:32difference? You know what?
- 40:34That's a great place. Spamalot was Monty Python Holy
- 40:36Grail the musical. You know what?
- 40:38That is such a good question. It's not everything I know is a
- 40:42lie. My whole world will shatter in
- 40:45front of me right now. I.
- 40:46Can't believe that I'm doing this again.
- 40:49Dare destroy this for me. OK, so the stage show spam a Lot
- 40:56does offer a revised plot while retaining many of the jokes from
- 41:00the film, yeah. Because the movie is like lol.
- 41:02Yeah, movie is. Well, I mean, is it 90 minutes?
- 41:06Is it 90 minutes? Yeah, it may.
- 41:07It felt longer as a kid. Maybe just I was just like into
- 41:10it. I was too quick to agree with
- 41:12you there. It was like when I saw in
- 41:13advance I was like 90 minutes. I said a lot happens in 90
- 41:17minutes. That's true.
- 41:18They pack a lot in. They pack a lot in.
- 41:20It moves quick. In May of 2018, 20th Century Fox
- 41:26green light a film adaptation of the musical Okay, and then they
- 41:32were slated to begin filming in early 2019.
- 41:35They announced a move to Paramount Pictures in 2020.
- 41:39However, in 2021 the they confirmed that it would not be
- 41:45made because two of the former colleagues opposed it.
- 41:49OK, then a Broadway revival began Previews in October of
- 41:532023 had an official opening night in November 2023.
- 42:00So let's see the group arranged. OK, so here we go.
- 42:08In 2013, the Pythons lost a legal case to Mark Forstader,
- 42:12the Pythons Capital P Pythons, the film's producer, owing a
- 42:17combined £800,000 in legal fees and back royalties to him for
- 42:22the derivative work of Spamalot. To help cover the cost of these
- 42:26royalties and fees, the group arranged and performed in a
- 42:29stage show, Monty Python Live, mostly held at the O2 Arena in
- 42:34London 2014. So I'm unsure if the one that's
- 42:39on Broadway right now is Spamala or if it's.
- 42:43It's definitely spamala. OK, great.
- 42:45Yeah, OK, great 'cause I have a friend who Andrew Walter shout
- 42:51out, friend of the pod. His his mom took him to see it
- 42:57when he was in 7th grade. And then this year he surprised
- 43:02his mom and took her to see it when they came back through
- 43:06Seattle. So that's sweet.
- 43:08And that was not very long ago. That was like this past year.
- 43:11So I'm assuming that it's spam a lot.
- 43:13And he said that basically like it was the same as the movie,
- 43:17except it was on stage and they had some music.
- 43:20So yeah, but that makes sense. The thing about Monty Python and
- 43:25the Holy Grail is that the whole time you kind of expect it to be
- 43:28a musical. At least for me, I felt like I
- 43:31was constantly waiting for them to actually break out in song.
- 43:35And I think that that is because I confuse it so much with Robin
- 43:39Hood management where they do. Well, there are other movies,
- 43:44too. They have songs like Life of Is
- 43:46What is it, Life of Brian? Like every sperm is sacred.
- 43:49Yeah. That's a whole song.
- 43:50Yeah, totally. They've done a few right.
- 43:52Like. Yeah.
- 43:53They've done a few, like, musical bits.
- 43:56Yeah. And in this one, I mean, there
- 43:58are some songs about Sir Robin not, not quite so brave as Sir
- 44:02Lancelot. Where they do they?
- 44:06It's like, you know, probably 1/3 of a song.
- 44:09His tongue. Cut out and his eyes gouge out
- 44:10of this something I'm just viscerally describing.
- 44:14And being murdered, yeah. Totally.
- 44:15And then? Great, I remember.
- 44:17Not quite so brave, but yeah, I feel like that is one of the
- 44:22funniest bits is continuing to see it almost become a musical.
- 44:27But then it's not. Yeah, when they cut, when they
- 44:29cut someone off, when someone is about to break out in song like
- 44:32that's a satire on its. I've seen so many like elements
- 44:35of this movie incorporated into like later comedy movies.
- 44:38I feel like to like this very much like influenced I the the
- 44:41him running away from far distance and restarting again.
- 44:44I forget where I saw it, but I remember seeing like that almost
- 44:48like shot for shot in another comedy thing.
- 44:51And I, I think like the person talked about it in an I remember
- 44:53looking it up like, and they talked about it in an interview
- 44:55that they were like making an allusion to that.
- 44:59Yeah. But it's like there's a few
- 45:00where like just the way that a lot of the scenes play out, I
- 45:03feel like it's like the almost the cadence of it is copied a
- 45:06lot totally. Where like the kind of like
- 45:08bullheadedness of so many of the characters.
- 45:10Yeah. I feel like I've seen that kind
- 45:12of replicated because it just feels like this is a very early
- 45:14example of, like, just watching people, like, fight.
- 45:17Yeah, there's over and over again throughout a movie like
- 45:20ever. No2 characters get along at all.
- 45:22No, and they no one listens to each other.
- 45:25They're diametrically opposed constantly and absolutely
- 45:28everyone's like annoyed at them and they hates them and they
- 45:32think they're the best in the world.
- 45:34Of course, yes. Which is why it's so apartment
- 45:36that the whole, like, you know, goal of, of King Arthur is to
- 45:42get together this group of Knights, the, the round table,
- 45:45the Knights of the Round table. And, and that he's trying to
- 45:49like, get to this Holy Grail where in reality, nobody likes
- 45:54each other. They're all diametrically
- 45:56opposed to each other. They're all fighting both each
- 45:59other and everyone that they encounter.
- 46:01And so it is a doomed mission from the start.
- 46:05The whole thing is like, you can't actually, you know, from
- 46:09the beginning, like they can't actually achieve this.
- 46:11Yeah. And that is?
- 46:13Like a feudal like journey almost.
- 46:16Yeah. Totally.
- 46:17And the fact that it ends in like an abstract, like the 4th
- 46:20wall getting broke, this is like a good like, Oh yeah, none of
- 46:23this mattered at all. Yeah, none of this.
- 46:24Matters the real life police like they get arrested for what?
- 46:28Like killing someone. Yeah, yeah, They get arrested
- 46:30for killing that one, that one guy who is like, he was like a
- 46:36modern guy and his wife is there, sees it and be murdered
- 46:41by by these like Knights from the 9th century.
- 46:47Yeah, yeah. And then it's like they're just
- 46:49crazy guys who are in, like costumes.
- 46:51So that was, yeah. Exactly, exactly it it kind of
- 46:58shoot, I lost my train of thought, but that's OK.
- 47:00I'll go on to my next thought, which is that the I think that
- 47:06it's really doing a good job of making fun of these like these
- 47:12heroes journeys where it's it should be so unrealistic that
- 47:17they could achieve what they want to achieve.
- 47:19Like even just like gathering nights of the round table when
- 47:23like working with all these egos and like trying to break into
- 47:27castles and trying to do all the stuff that it's like, it's, it's
- 47:33absurd really, that we can suspend our disbelief for so
- 47:36many of these like high budget hero's journey type movies,
- 47:41especially like medieval times set stories.
- 47:46When in reality, it's like if we looked at it, if we looked at it
- 47:50realistically, we would say, oh, this is doomed to fail.
- 47:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it we can suspend
- 47:57disbelief more because it's in that like fake mini medieval
- 48:00setting. Like it's not like there we have
- 48:01nothing to compare it against. Like a modern world.
- 48:04Yeah, yeah, totally. I think, I think that it's
- 48:12interesting to see a movie like this take on a new life beyond
- 48:18when it was released because like when it was released, it
- 48:20was only like the reception was like lukewarm and it didn't
- 48:26really make much money when it was first released.
- 48:28Like cult classic. It's a total cult classic.
- 48:32And I feel like it's one of those that.
- 48:36Yeah, I don't, I don't really know how popular this movie is
- 48:38because my mom, like, valued it so highly.
- 48:41And I was like, oh, well, like when you told me no one had done
- 48:44this, I was like, how? It's like, isn't that the movie
- 48:47that everyone watched 100 times as a kid?
- 48:49And then I'm thinking back. I'm like, no, that's a weird.
- 48:51Yeah, that like absurd British comedy film that my mom in
- 48:55particular love. Yeah.
- 48:57So I I'm curious to see like, how much like people actually
- 49:01do. I mean, I feel like it is kind
- 49:03of a cultural like, yeah, Touchstone in ways.
- 49:05I've seen it referenced a lot, but like, I don't know there.
- 49:08I think there's definitely more of a blind spot to it than I
- 49:10have aware of. Totally.
- 49:11I feel like if I if I took a poll of my friends, I wonder how
- 49:16many of them have watched it. Yeah, yeah, I'll do you know,
- 49:19I'll do some, I'll do some crowdsourcing.
- 49:22Yeah, I referenced Monk in conversation like a few weeks
- 49:25ago and I was like, oh right, not everyone was a weird little
- 49:289 year old watching like psychic detective shows.
- 49:31So like superpower disabled detective shows any, any
- 49:36detective who had some sort of mental issue and was really good
- 49:41at their job as a result of that, yeah.
- 49:43Give me a minute. Absolutely.
- 49:44Get us in there. Yeah, Psych mentalist Monk.
- 49:47Oh my God, I love Monk. Holy Grail, yeah.
- 49:50Totally, Monk. Such an such an underrated show.
- 49:54Yeah, yeah. Tony Shalu, the voice of our
- 49:57generation. Truly of our generation, Yeah,
- 50:0026. No, I'm not sure.
- 50:02I'm. I'm a Shalu PED.
- 50:03I'm I'm as old as he is. Yeah, I die the day he does.
- 50:06All right, so my age is unimportant.
- 50:09It's I will expire when my Shalhoub Lord does.
- 50:15I love it. I was saying something similar
- 50:17yesterday about Terry Gross. Yeah, well, I I have a joke
- 50:21about Terry Gross, so I get on the stage.
- 50:23Yeah. Oh.
- 50:23My God, that's awesome. Yeah.
- 50:26You want to do it? You want to tell me a joke?
- 50:28It's been a while since I've even done it.
- 50:30That's OK. I don't mean to be like, oh,
- 50:31you're a comic, tell me a joke. Wait, I, I'm mad that I can't
- 50:35think about this right now. Yeah, I, I just reference NPR
- 50:38and like, at one point I'm like, Oh yeah.
- 50:40Like it's I'll. I'll think of it later.
- 50:44I think you're going to think of it.
- 50:45Yeah, it'll, it'll pop into my I'll be thinking about it.
- 50:47You'll this camera is going to watch me dig through my brain
- 50:51archive. You're going to see.
- 50:52You're going to see the wheels turn.
- 50:53Yeah. Deciphering.
- 50:55I was talking about God. I don't even really remember how
- 50:59it came up. I think it was OK, actually, I
- 51:02do. I had the Childish Gambino song
- 51:06Sunrise stuck in my head. And in that song he says
- 51:11something like, call me Terry Gross on the Talk of the Nation
- 51:16or something like that. And I was like, you know, Terry
- 51:20Gross is really the queen of tiny little women with big
- 51:25personalities that are like really short women who kind of
- 51:29pack a big punch. And and she is our queen and our
- 51:33supreme leader and. And I would die for her.
- 51:38So, you know, that's kind of how I feel.
- 51:40Even though Terry Gross is probably 50 years older than me,
- 51:44maybe maybe 40. How old am I, 30?
- 51:47She's probably. She's probably 70.
- 51:48Right. Gross.
- 51:49Yeah. Wow, I got it.
- 51:51I got it. Oh my God, he's got it.
- 51:52It's occurred. All right, So it's, I forget how
- 51:54to get into this joke, but it's basically about how, like, I
- 51:57come from an NPR family, not an NFL family like my dad's like,
- 52:00oh, why watch grown men tax each other when you can listen to
- 52:02Terry Gross tackle the tough issue?
- 52:07You said Terry Gross sacked that guy.
- 52:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, you said. Terry Gross beat the shit out of
- 52:12that guy. Yeah.
- 52:14No, Terry, I remember listening to a lot of Terry Gross.
- 52:16A lot of. Yeah, that's.
- 52:17You're hitting all the points that like made me who I am
- 52:19today. I only fight on Terry Gross.
- 52:21Yeah, Monk. And it shows.
- 52:25And I mean that, and I mean that as a compliment.
- 52:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's my calming voice, even tell
- 52:32how much Terry Gross I listen to, and it's not at all because
- 52:35I'm just losing my voice, right? Now, no, totally.
- 52:37It's because of Terry. It's because of it's because of
- 52:39my queen Terry and my people in my culture of short of short
- 52:43little women with, with big personality.
- 52:45I would never know Punch. I never know.
- 52:47She sounds like a giant I I just imagine her mogging old guests I
- 52:53mentioned, just like you're looming over them like Terry
- 52:56Gross. And spiritually, she does.
- 52:58She sucks. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna look up
- 53:00exactly how tall. How tall is Terry?
- 53:04What? Is Teresa, is that what that
- 53:07show for or is she just a Terry? I think she might just be Terry.
- 53:11She's 4 feet 11 inches. For some reason I was like, is
- 53:15it Terrence? Terrence Gross.
- 53:19Let's look at her Wikipedia page.
- 53:22She it's just Terry. Terry G.
- 53:25Yeah, I really like that when when people who intend to call
- 53:30their kids by a name just call them that name.
- 53:33Like if her parents knew. Yeah, like I'm not.
- 53:36William that's, I don't know, a lot of just Liam's.
- 53:39That is awesome. It does make it worse though,
- 53:41when my name is Liam Nelson and Liam Neeson was already a famous
- 53:44person when I was born. Like my mom was like, she could
- 53:48have had plausible deniability and just back, oh, you're named
- 53:51William, but we just call you Liam.
- 53:52Like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 53:54She knew exactly what she was doing.
- 53:56And it's not like she, she was like, you know, absent from the
- 54:00world of entertainment, Didn't hear of him.
- 54:01No, she was very much involved. Yeah, I asked her like, do you
- 54:04name me after ever? She's like, no, I'm like, well,
- 54:06but you knew he was alive, though.
- 54:09He was already famous. Like, like, we just gotta hang
- 54:13names up in the rafters like basketball jerseys, you know,
- 54:15like you can't be repeating names like numbers.
- 54:17That's we really. Too bad for my SEO.
- 54:23Can't believe that your mom didn't think of your SEO when?
- 54:25I know, love. Come on, marketing.
- 54:27Marketing when you're. Having kids think about the
- 54:31marketing. You always have to think about
- 54:33the marketing. Yeah, you do.
- 54:35Yeah. It reminds me of how right now
- 54:37my license plate is so expired, like my license plate tags, that
- 54:41they're gonna make me get a new license plate with, like a new
- 54:44number and everything. And I know.
- 54:46I know. Good.
- 54:47I'm gonna. Go to the DMV.
- 54:48I'm a part of the problem. But they they said like, yeah,
- 54:52the we like recycle the numbers. Like it goes back into the
- 54:56system. So you're going to have to get a
- 54:58new one. So now I'm walking around
- 54:59thinking someone else has my license plate.
- 55:01They're getting it out. And so I don't love that.
- 55:06I think that we should really just hang it up because what if,
- 55:09what if, what if someone I don't know commits a crime with my
- 55:13license plate number on the back of their car?
- 55:15It's true. It is motivation for you to go
- 55:17to the DMV sooner than later. Yeah, yeah, I think that's
- 55:20probably for the best. Yeah, you might want to sort
- 55:22that out. I'm not gonna talk about the
- 55:24status of my plates on my car because I should do that on a
- 55:28public forum. Oh, so you're so much smarter.
- 55:32Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're, no, I'm just, I think
- 55:35mine is more illegal than yours. So we're just, it's all good.
- 55:39Oh. My God, he's driving a stolen
- 55:41car. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:42No, I stole it from myself. It just the government doesn't
- 55:46know about the car. So, right.
- 55:49Been driving through a lot of bridges with no tags on.
- 55:52You don't get tolls if you don't have tags.
- 55:55And it's been working for a long time, so that's amazing.
- 55:59Nobody tell. All right, We're friends.
- 56:01Now this is between us. This is just in the family.
- 56:05We're keeping this in the family.
- 56:07Yeah, or we will as the French in the castle.
- 56:12Do we ask you will sack you. And.
- 56:14We will throw it on. You're a cow.
- 56:16Yeah, at you. Probably, Probably.
- 56:18Whatever I gotta do to keep my tags from?
- 56:21Absolutely. You know, the great thing about
- 56:24the practical, like the bad practical effects, is that we
- 56:28never think to ourselves, Oh my God, a real cow is getting hurt
- 56:32in the making of this film. It's not realistic at all.
- 56:35It's not as though we're seeing a CGI, very lifelike cow flying
- 56:39through the air. Human beings died by the dozens.
- 56:41The cows were unharmed. The cows unharmed and I really
- 56:45do appreciate that. OK, well gosh, what else do we
- 56:49have to discuss? Is there anything else related
- 56:51to Monty Python or just your whatever is on your mind that we
- 56:58haven't discussed yet? I don't know.
- 57:00I think, I think we hit all the points of the movie.
- 57:02I think we did too. Feel like I'd tell a lot about
- 57:04myself outside of the movie as well.
- 57:08Comedians. It's been really fun to be a
- 57:10Mystery Science Theater guy. I've never had to be that
- 57:13because I was too tall and I would block the film.
- 57:15So that's. And here this is.
- 57:19Here we're not even watching the movie, we're just talking about
- 57:20it. Yeah, literally.
- 57:21I have not. I still not seen the film since
- 57:23I was 12. This is straight recollection I
- 57:27have still as a 26 year old 14 years after seeing the film.
- 57:31Lost, and that's a powerful. So it's baked in there.
- 57:33It's baked in, he doesn't have room for anything else, so don't
- 57:36try to teach him anything or suggest.
- 57:38If anyone knows a bar trivia place that only does Monty
- 57:42Python and the Holy Grail quotes?
- 57:45There is got to be. You might have.
- 57:47To I'm your guy. You might have to go to the UK
- 57:49but I imagine. I know there are so many other
- 57:51people who are somehow better at that than me and.
- 57:54I totally just got to find the subreddit and there will be
- 57:57people who are competitively. Yeah, they'll, they'll just kick
- 58:00my ass. Yeah, totally.
- 58:01But we all need to be humbled. Everywhere.
- 58:03God forbid I try to beat a redditor at some point.
- 58:06God forbid I try, I try to make something of my 2.
- 58:08Tricks in their fedora. Yeah, it's it's tough out here
- 58:15and it's tough out there. I was going to say, I was going
- 58:19to say one more thing about Monty Python.
- 58:21Oh, no, I was going to say for you being here on this podcast
- 58:24is that we are, you know, this is a disability inclusive
- 58:28podcast, which is why why we wouldn't make you stand in front
- 58:32of anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:34We let our guests sit if they want.
- 58:38And what? If I had come in and like, no,
- 58:40I'll stand, what would you have even done?
- 58:44I would have said, OK, well, I'll be down here.
- 58:47Yeah, very gross. And I think I wouldn't even be
- 58:50able to be out of the shock because the ceiling's too low.
- 58:51So they could have made it work. I just would have been like, hey
- 58:55everyone. We would have just tilted the
- 58:57camera up, yeah, a little bit, or it would have just been like
- 59:00a midsection. You just see my like hips down
- 59:03and then like nipples up. Like the middle part is just out
- 59:06of the screen. They just cut it happened.
- 59:09That's movie magic. Hey, listener, viewer, thank you
- 59:13so much for being with us. Liam, thank you so much for
- 59:16being. Me for having me.
- 59:17Oh. My God, it was a pleasure.
- 59:18And go see, go see Liam on tour, let you know, keep that money
- 59:23coming in so he can keep paying his bills.
- 59:26Yeah. You know, the disability tax out
- 59:28here. It's tough.
- 59:29Yeah, it's like the pink tax but disabled.
- 59:32I don't know what that blue, the blue tax, the parking pass tax.
- 59:37Yeah, the you don't have. Your body doesn't value you as a
- 59:40full human being. Tax.
- 59:42The you don't have your license plate tags update and we give
- 59:45you tickets every. I'm selling the car.
- 59:47It's fine. I'm selling it as soon as I get
- 59:50back from this to work because I live in New York and I.
- 59:53Just going to say you. Can only have a car for three
- 59:55years before I gave up on having a car.

- 1:00:02You know, you got to try it for yourself, Having a car in New
- 1:00:05York to find out what it's what, what an inconvenience.
- 1:00:08It's been a dream. It's been a dream getting up at
- 1:00:107:00 AM every other day to move it.
- 1:00:12Or you're getting a $65 ticket if I if my alarm doesn't go off.
- 1:00:16Yeah. Totally.
- 1:00:17Because I was right on time for this podcast, so I'm definitely
- 1:00:20right on time to move my car at 7:00 in the morning.
- 1:00:23So this is yeah, I'm really good at that.
- 1:00:25Yeah, totally. I can see how that goes.
- 1:00:26So buy his car if you see. Yeah.
- 1:00:28Hey. Got a Ford Flex 2019, it's got
- 1:00:30about 130,000 miles on it. So it's, you know, it's not,
- 1:00:34it's not a young vehicle. New.
- 1:00:36But it runs good. Nothing's wrong with it other
- 1:00:40than it's in New York and I don't want it anymore.
- 1:00:43So take my car, all right? That's my last plug.
