- 0:03Nate Vainio: You know, in some respects, when you talk about the swearing, there's some respects I've become numb to.
- 0:10Nate Vainio: Yeah, and I don't know if.
- 0:13Nate Vainio: And I'm saying that just, I'm just saying that's the way it is.
- 0:16Nate Vainio: I'm not saying that that's right, I'm just.
- 0:18Nate Vainio: There are some words that I'm just kind of numb to.
- 0:22Nate Vainio: I hear the F-bomb all the time at work, but what has gotten under my skin is when people say the Lord's name in vain and not just JC, but there are times when I hear guys say that with such anger.
- 0:44Daniel Moore: But there are times when I hear guys say that with such anger.
- 0:47Daniel Moore: We welcome back Nate Vainio with Something to Not On podcast this week as we wrap up our discussion on godliness in the workplace.
- 0:53Daniel Moore: This is part two of our two-part episode.
- 0:56Daniel Moore: We'll be back right after this and a word from our sponsor.
- 0:59Daniel Moore: I'm out.
- 1:16Daniel Moore: Bum-ping-ping-ping-pang bang, bum-ping-ping-pang bang, bum-ping-ping-pang bang, bum-ping-ping-ping-pang bang, bum-ping-ping-pang bang.
- 1:31Daniel Moore: They say that it is darkest Right before the dawn.
- 1:40Daniel Moore: So remember, no matter what battle you are facing, what war is raging, the dawn is coming.
- 1:53Daniel Moore: Prepare for battle, prepare for victory.
- 1:59Daniel Moore: Be sure to visit our sponsor's website at wearewarriorsapparelcom.
- 2:03Daniel Moore: Hey everyone, we're backriorsapparelcom.
- 2:06Daniel Moore: Hey everyone, we're back again with Nate Vainio.
- 2:08Daniel Moore: Thank you guys for joining us this week and I hope you enjoyed last week's episode, as we laid out part one of our series on godliness in the workplace.
- 2:18Daniel Moore: A lot of times, the places that we have to go every day aren't necessarily the best places to be when you are a Christian, as it really fights against your faith tremendously as Satan tries to take you down.
- 2:30Daniel Moore: But you know what we can overcome and we can win those battles that Satan throws at us, even in our workplaces, around our fellow employees and our fellow workers, our co-workers that we have to work with each and every day, and Nate and I are sharing some stories and some experiences here on these two episodes.
- 2:49Daniel Moore: That'll maybe enlighten you guys and help you a little bit in this walk that you're walking or these battles that you may be facing.
- 2:55Daniel Moore: And, of course, we always have to have a big dose of prayer whenever we go through these experiences in life, that God will be right there by our side, supporting us and helping us through all of this, as he's promised that he would.
- 3:07Daniel Moore: We know that he's always there, so we're gonna finish up that discussion this week.
- 3:12Daniel Moore: First of all, don't forget to visit my website at connectingthegapnet.
- 3:15Daniel Moore: You'll learn everything about our podcasting platforms, everything about our ministry, and you can buy some merch or go buy some books, whatever you'd like to do.
- 3:23Daniel Moore: If you're not a Christian, there's a page there on how to do that.
- 3:25Daniel Moore: And if you do give your life to Christ and need a Bible, please reach out.
- 3:29Daniel Moore: We'll help you with that as well.
- 3:30Daniel Moore: And if you do reach out to us and at least let us know that this ministry helped touch your life and that you've become a Christian, we'd love to come alongside you in prayer that God would support and sustain you in this walk with Him, in this new journey that you take as you let Him come in and be the Lord of your life.
- 3:47Daniel Moore: Well, as I said, we have part two this week with Nate Vainio, from Something to Not on Podcast, and we're going to get into part two of this two-part episode on this series here on Connecting the Gap.
- 4:01Daniel Moore: So, listening to your story, you were separated at this time and you had all these colorful guys around you that had their own lifestyles and the ways that they live their life every day.
- 4:29Daniel Moore: What really inside of you, do you think kept you from flipping to the other side and not being?
- 4:33Daniel Moore: I know you said you weren't perfect the whole time, and we never are, but how did you hold on to enough to where they respected that part of you, do you feel?
- 4:44Nate Vainio: Yeah, I don't, you know, I hadn't thought about analyzing, analyzing myself like that, but uh, you know, there was.
- 4:53Nate Vainio: For me, there was a, as you were talking, there was a clear memory that came up with this, and then a couple of other jobs that came up with this, and then a couple of other jobs, and that was that somehow they became aware of the fact that I was a Christian and, like, when I talk about Dig Dug, he would become a defender of mine.
- 5:22Nate Vainio: Wow, don't talk about, don't, don't, don't, don't talk about that right now, not, not with Nate around.
- 5:28Nate Vainio: You know it's, you know, or you'd hear him, you know, get guys piping down.
- 5:34Nate Vainio: Just watch your language, watch your language around.
- 5:35Nate Vainio: And again, I come back to that issue of you know it was there's, there's an issue of respect on their part towards, even though they didn't necessarily like me, or there was a respect dynamic in play and I think it was just probably more that I had.
- 5:52Nate Vainio: Just I had drawn a line and I dug a line.
- 5:54Nate Vainio: Yeah, yeah, I let the guy drink a beer in my truck, you know, or several A few six packs, but well no, it was never grossly over the top like that, it was always just that was his way of chilling out and winding down for the day and I hope that doesn't cause anybody to stumble.
- 6:14Nate Vainio: And I'm not saying it's okay, I'm just saying I did it.
- 6:16Nate Vainio: If that was a fail, drawing the boundary with the Christian music playing in my truck was the was the positive boundary.
- 6:37Nate Vainio: Out of that that birthed the idea and the understanding that I'm a Christian.
- 6:43Nate Vainio: I'm not about that.
- 6:44Nate Vainio: I'm not going to do those things.
- 6:46Nate Vainio: We don't you know, you know, I don't camp out at your place, your fire pit, you know if I'm not doing what you guys do.
- 6:55Nate Vainio: And so there was an understanding of and I've had that with other jobs where there's been at least.
- 7:01Nate Vainio: I may not have won everybody or had the opportunity to share the gospel in very clear, concise fashion with everybody I've ever worked with, but I believe there's been a clear enough understanding of who I am as a Christian to not do or not say things or not even bother asking Nate to be involved in these things.
- 7:27Nate Vainio: There's another where I work currently that happens.
- 7:31Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 7:31Nate Vainio: You know it's like, well, we're nevermind it, nate, we're going to, we're doing this thing.
- 7:35Nate Vainio: This is just the guy.
- 7:39Nate Vainio: What I'm trying to say is that the guys at work get together and do stuff and I'm never invited right and I'm totally okay with that.
- 7:47Daniel Moore: Yeah, you know I can relate to that this another job that I had was at a salvage yard and another rough bunch of guys oh come on those those all the grease monkeys out there.
- 8:01Daniel Moore: But you know what, as rough as they look, super nice guys, you know they would do anything for you.
- 8:06Daniel Moore: But again, I was in that type of environment where they're the pornography and then the language and a lot of that type of thing was was more rampant and at least you know, in that job I had learned a lot of lessons from prior and when I started working there my faith was more solid and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to fail and I had the same scenarios there that you're talking about.
- 8:34Daniel Moore: It got to the point where when they showed the pornography they did it around the corner, away from where I was, or if they came around me, their language would clear up pretty good.
- 8:43Daniel Moore: For a while they went on float trips a lot, but the girls that worked there would flash people and all this other stuff.
- 8:51Daniel Moore: So I never was invited to those, not a problem.
- 8:53Daniel Moore: They knew that I wouldn't go.
- 8:54Daniel Moore: But you know, I think, what came home to me there from the fire department side of things, when I quit the fire department and I moved on to another job, it wasn't the salvage yard, it was a different job at that time.
- 9:06Daniel Moore: But not too long after I switched jobs, there was a fireman that started the same time that I did years prior.
- 9:13Daniel Moore: Three of us got hired on the same day.
- 9:15Daniel Moore: Well, he went on a fire here in my hometown in a grain silo and he ended up.
- 9:23Daniel Moore: He was going up to the top of the silo to check uh, the, the fire, the smoke and everything after they'd been putting it out for a little while.
- 9:30Daniel Moore: He was just going up to check the status or whatever, and he was riding one of those primitive elevators that they have in those grain silos, and anybody that's been around farming probably knows what I'm talking about.
- 9:39Daniel Moore: It's basically a platform on ropes and pulleys and whatever but it had a motor to run it up, no safety features of it whatsoever, he shouldn't have been on it.
- 9:49Daniel Moore: But halfway up his air pack got caught on some steel girding and it literally bent him in half and he died that day.
- 9:57Daniel Moore: And he was about a year or two younger than me and you know, uh, when I went to that and me to back up just for a second, he and I, when I got divorced I was divorced for five years and so several years there he and I hung out a lot and we did some bar time and some other stuff.
- 10:17Daniel Moore: You know that I really shouldn't have been taking a part of, but that's what we did Well when I went to that funeral, but that's what we did Well when I went to that funeral.
- 10:24Daniel Moore: I've been to many funerals and I just couldn't explain it.
- 10:29Daniel Moore: That day when I stayed in there it just seemed like there was such a heaviness.
- 10:33Daniel Moore: You know, if you go to a funeral where it's a believer, it's more like a celebration of life.
- 10:38Daniel Moore: You know, it's like everybody knows where that person went.
- 10:41Daniel Moore: They're all excited because they got to meet Jesus and their testimony is going to live on forever and have that legacy.
- 10:48Daniel Moore: That was not the case at this one, all I could think of was nobody in this room.
- 10:52Daniel Moore: He never even went to church, so the pastor that had done his funeral didn't really know what to say about him.
- 10:57Daniel Moore: I mean, it just started from there and escalated.
- 11:00Daniel Moore: The whole time.
- 11:01Daniel Moore: I sit there thinking I was not a good witness.
- 11:04Daniel Moore: There are so many times that I could have done things differently and witnessed to him and maybe he would have listened at some point, maybe his life would have been changed, and I had no idea, even my own self, if he ever really gave his life to Christ or not.
- 11:19Daniel Moore: Nobody knew.
- 11:20Daniel Moore: And you know when you start, you think about things like that and you realize the impact of you know, with the impact that you had on the group of guys you were around, you were able to say that preacher prayer, and you know have the different impacts that you had and the respect out of them for what you believed.
- 11:40Daniel Moore: I came in supposedly believing something, but I didn't stick to it and so, therefore, my impact on any of those guys was I was just one of them.
- 11:49Daniel Moore: However, at the salvage yard when I worked there I was about nine years there I stuck to my testimony, the best I could, and I'd done a really good job of trying to live out what I believed every day until I quit there.
- 12:04Daniel Moore: Job of, you know, trying to live out what I believed every day until I quit there.
- 12:07Daniel Moore: I never really had a moment, though, where I've felt like if I really made an impact on somebody or not, you know.
- 12:12Daniel Moore: Just nothing really stood out, stood out to me, except for the fact, like you were saying, they might wash their language or take the pornography around the corner or whatever, but beyond that I really didn't know.
- 12:20Daniel Moore: Well, a couple of years after I quit there, I got a phone call out of the blue one day from one of the guys that worked there.
- 12:28Daniel Moore: He was in the shipping area and wasn't a churchgoer.
- 12:33Daniel Moore: He was probably one of the worst for the language and the pornography and all that.
- 12:37Daniel Moore: But he was having a lot of family problems with his daughter and stuff.
- 12:41Daniel Moore: And he called me out of the blue and I saw his name pop up on my phone and I'm like what does he want, you know?
- 12:47Daniel Moore: And so I went ahead and answered it and talked to him for a second and they just kind of broke down and he wanted to know if I'd pray for him and his family and everything that was going that he was going through at that time and you know that was like a proud daddy moment whenever, whenever that happened, you know that was like a proud daddy moment whenever that happened.
- 13:04Daniel Moore: You know because I was like you know all of that those nine years that I tried to stick to my guns and do what God wanted me to do, it paid off, even for one person.
- 13:13Nate Vainio: It paid off.
- 13:15Daniel Moore: And I think that any of us, as we're, you know, in the workplace or out in public, wherever we are a lot of times we may not feel like we're really making an impact or making a difference.
- 13:26Daniel Moore: Our light isn't shining.
- 13:27Daniel Moore: We all have those moments where we just kind of get in that rut and but you know what people are watching?
- 13:33Nate Vainio: yeah, they really are yeah, I was gonna say that with regard to what you were talking about with your fire department days there, you know I granted, granted, yeah, maybe it wasn't the best of times in terms of where you were, but you'd be amazed at what people see in that time, too fatalistic about the dynamic, because what will end up happening in the long run, too, is people see you bounce back, yeah, and, and they see what they see the long-term impact of god in your life and what have you.
- 14:15Nate Vainio: But, uh, I was, as you were talking about the, the guys at the uh, um, and I'll forewarn you I may be going off the reservation here a little bit, breaking the mold of evangelistic protocol, you know, with a couple of comments here, but when you're talking about the guys that you deal with at the salvage yard and the use of pornography there, and what have you?
- 14:46Nate Vainio: Anybody who's listened to my podcast?
- 14:49Nate Vainio: I'm pretty open about the fact that that used to be a struggle.
- 14:51Nate Vainio: God miraculously, divinely, set me free.
- 14:56Nate Vainio: Not only set me free, but taught me how to walk in that freedom.
- 15:01Daniel Moore: It's a very it's a two-step, a big difference.
- 15:05Nate Vainio: Yeah, there's a two-step dynamic there that you've got to wrap your head around.
- 15:08Nate Vainio: But uh, that nearly destroyed our marriage.
- 15:14Nate Vainio: It was part of it was part of the separation dynamic.
- 15:18Nate Vainio: It wasn't necessarily the, the center, the focal point of it or the centerpiece, but said a few years after that God has set me free from that, he restores our marriage.
- 15:36Nate Vainio: I end up in a different job, driving truck cross country.
- 15:41Nate Vainio: I hurt my back, I'm on workman's comp for about a year and I have to live in Tulsa, about an hour and a half away from home, throughout the week so I can work light duty and anybody who understands work comp would understand that If you don't don't worry about it, You're blessed to not have to worry about work.
- 16:00Daniel Moore: Try not to get there.
- 16:00Daniel Moore: Try not to get there.
- 16:01Nate Vainio: Try not to get to work up, okay, so, so they put me up in a hotel.
- 16:04Nate Vainio: I had a hotel, uh, five days a week, and I had to ride in the van with these other truck drivers, as we're talking about groups of individuals, we've talked about minors and we've talked about, uh, first responders, and we've talked about salvage yard workers, and now we're dealing with truck drivers, you know and uh, all of which have graceful mouths.
- 16:30Nate Vainio: Oh yeah, Uh you know it's so colorful and um you know, in, in in some respects when you talk about the swearing I there's some respects I, I I've become numb to, yeah, and I don't know if.
- 16:46Nate Vainio: And I'm saying that just, I'm just saying that's the way it is.
- 16:49Nate Vainio: I'm not saying that that's right, I'm just.
- 16:55Nate Vainio: There are some words that I'm just kind of numb to.
- 16:59Nate Vainio: I hear the F-bomb all the time at work, but what has gotten under my skin is when people say the lord's name in vain, yeah, and not, not just oh, jc.
- 17:12Nate Vainio: But there are times when I hear guys say that with such anger and there was a guy at work the other day that, uh, there was a guy at work the other day that this is starting to sound so dark.
- 17:28Nate Vainio: I want to liven this up here a little bit.
- 17:30Nate Vainio: But this guy comes in and he's everything was F, this and F that he was one of those guys that he just doesn't have a vocabulary, he just doesn't have an understanding of you know.
- 17:40Nate Vainio: And at one point in time this guy, you know he's in the F-bomb.
- 17:45Nate Vainio: I said I started counting.
- 17:47Nate Vainio: I said, sir, since such and such a point in time in our conversation, do you realize that you've said the F word 37 times?
- 17:53Nate Vainio: And he was kind of shocked, you know.
- 17:57Daniel Moore: I said the F-bomb.
- 17:58Daniel Moore: What are you talking?
- 17:59Nate Vainio: about?
- 17:59Nate Vainio: What are you talking about?
- 18:00Nate Vainio: You know, there's this derailing moment with some of these things.
- 18:06Nate Vainio: I don't know that I would go out and do this with everybody and every time that I've got to change that.
- 18:10Nate Vainio: But in moments like that I'm kind of like, okay, you know, let's just bring this thing to a head here, you know, yeah, and so then the other one is you know, when people say, use the Lord's name in vain, you know, jc, this JC that I had this guy in the other day and just a difficult, difficult man.
- 18:33Nate Vainio: Everything's always wrong, we're always wrong, we always do things bad.
- 18:37Nate Vainio: He's always on the receiving end, he's the victim of this thing.
- 18:40Nate Vainio: He and I look each other right in the eye.
- 18:43Nate Vainio: I mean, he stands 6'4, four.
- 18:45Nate Vainio: He's probably a good 300 pounds.
- 18:47Nate Vainio: Uh, it'd be a fun, it'd be a fun wrestling match to watch, um, but.
- 18:55Nate Vainio: But we're sitting there one day and he's cussing somebody else out that I had taken over and I'm trying to resolve this thing and he's just hot.
- 19:04Nate Vainio: And finally he says something and he says you know, jesus Christ?
- 19:09Nate Vainio: And I said he is so awesome you wouldn't believe what he's done for me.
- 19:16Nate Vainio: And he looked at me and he just kind of cross-eyed and it brought his train to a complete halt.
- 19:24Nate Vainio: He just had no idea what to do from that point forward.
- 19:28Nate Vainio: And so I don't do that every time when I hear somebody talking like that, but every now and then when something goes on like that, you know, when there's I mean because I think there's a dynamic in which people say things of that nature out of ignorance, yeah, in which people say things of that nature out of ignorance, yeah, and there are others who say it out of just that deep anger and hatred or whatever, and you can kind of sense that, and I was like you know, let's have some fun with this, let's, let's see if we can bring this to a halt, you know, yeah and uh, what was the?
- 19:58Nate Vainio: other one some at what point time somebody says that and I said, oh, he's the greatest.
- 20:04Nate Vainio: You'd be amazed at what he's done for me or something of that nature anyhow, but it brings it to a stop.
- 20:11Nate Vainio: But the other thing that I just and I guess I throw these out here in terms of just little things to start thinking about, if you were going to have these conversations with people at work, that that kind of put up a boundary and say listen, you know you're kind of infringing on my.
- 20:28Nate Vainio: I realize you have a freedom of speech, but I do too, you know, and so I'm going to speak as well, you know.
- 20:37Nate Vainio: And so one of the other things that you'd mentioned too, that is, is a way in which people cross boundaries with us was like when I was in this van with these truck drivers in Tulsa going to work every morning.
- 20:51Nate Vainio: These guys would grab their phones and they'd be oh look at this, look at this.
- 21:10Nate Vainio: I was kind of being jovial about trying to jokingly call out the fact that people are using the F word so much, or you know what, have you or Jesus Christ in vain.
- 21:18Nate Vainio: When those guys did that in that van, something came over me, and I don't know if you'd say that I snapped, but something shifted in me and it was.
- 21:25Nate Vainio: I don't remember what the exact words that I said, but they were something to the effect of don't ever show that stuff to me again.
- 21:31Nate Vainio: That that just about ruined my life and my marriage.
- 21:34Nate Vainio: My wife and I were, and I shared my testimony very quickly.
- 21:39Nate Vainio: My wife and I were separated for nearly two years and God set me free from that and I have no desire to go back to that.
- 21:45Nate Vainio: Don't show that to me again.
- 21:46Nate Vainio: Yeah, and what you who are listening don't realize is that I've been pointing my finger at our beloved host here as if he never did again.
- 21:58Daniel Moore: OK, OK, OK.
- 21:59Nate Vainio: But but what you know so is.
- 22:03Nate Vainio: So you'll have those people who hear that part of this story and they'll be like, oh, that's so aggressive, that's so what would?
- 22:10Nate Vainio: What would a guy who's a recovering alcoholic do at work when they're having a party that week and they're you know, they're going out for a bender.
- 22:19Nate Vainio: You know what's?
- 22:20Nate Vainio: You know, I mean, alcohol may have destroyed that person's life and you're just going to continue to tease that guy with that.
- 22:29Nate Vainio: You know?
- 22:29Nate Vainio: And that's no, I don't think so.
- 22:31Nate Vainio: So what ended up happening was almost immediately, almost immediately, they started talking about their experiences with faith.
- 22:42Nate Vainio: Joe had been in a church and he told me about this, and we spent the rest of that car ride that morning talking about who was in church and who was not in church, and I didn't start it.
- 22:57Daniel Moore: Well, I mean, I kind of did, but they were all trying to.
- 23:01Nate Vainio: I think maybe to some extent they were kind of defending themselves.
- 23:03Nate Vainio: You know a little bit, but never again was that an issue.
- 23:08Daniel Moore: Yeah, A lot of people don't understand that when it comes to life controlling issues, if they've never struggled with that, yeah, they don't understand why the other person has such an issue trying to get rid of it.
- 23:22Daniel Moore: And because I've been in the same boat too with the pornography thing, that's a thing that I've had to kick in the past and I've prayed with several people at church that have had marital issues because of that exact thing and had to pray with them and they've whipped it.
- 23:42Daniel Moore: But it doesn't take much.
- 23:44Daniel Moore: And but it doesn't take much and Satan knows it doesn't take much to get somebody to flip back again.
- 23:50Daniel Moore: If what you said earlier was very key, it's not just being free from something.
- 23:54Daniel Moore: You have to learn how to walk in that freedom and own it.
- 23:57Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 23:57Daniel Moore: You have to claim that over your life and own that and get to a point where I'm at the point in my life right now.
- 24:03Daniel Moore: I have finally gotten to the point where I have no desire.
- 24:08Daniel Moore: God has totally taken that out of my life and I'm so thankful for that but hold on a second here, let me.
- 24:15Nate Vainio: Let me pick at that for a minute here how much tv you watch I try not to watch a whole lot.
- 24:22Daniel Moore: Probably, oh oh, maybe six to 10 hours a week.
- 24:27Nate Vainio: Okay.
- 24:27Daniel Moore: Maybe at the most, if that so.
- 24:30Nate Vainio: I mean, and mentally I'm going down the rabbit hole of you know how.
- 24:34Nate Vainio: What are you feeling in your mind with?
- 24:37Nate Vainio: You know?
- 24:37Nate Vainio: How much time do you spend reading the Bible Like last week we were talking, and I know that you dig in quite a bit and what you find is, when you've got, um, when you've filled your life throughout the week with reading the word and studying the word, there isn't a whole lot of room left for other stuff.
- 24:59Nate Vainio: Right and uh.
- 25:01Nate Vainio: On the flip side, if you're feeling yourself you know I was we recently got a okay, this is how our family handles TV.
- 25:15Nate Vainio: We unplugged our antenna.
- 25:16Nate Vainio: We don't have cable.
- 25:17Nate Vainio: We have a selection of movies from years past that we have kept.
- 25:24Nate Vainio: There's been a bunch that we've thrown away.
- 25:26Nate Vainio: We rewatch when we want to watch something.
- 25:29Nate Vainio: We rewatch something that we've watched probably ten times prior and we laugh about it.
- 25:33Nate Vainio: We still get along.
- 25:34Nate Vainio: We recently added every now and then we'll watch something on YouTube or watch something on.
- 25:39Nate Vainio: You know we have access.
- 25:42Nate Vainio: You know smartphones and what have you.
- 25:43Nate Vainio: The other day I got on this app that, uh, it's like, uh, peacock or whatever, and I was spinning through you know, trying to find a movie for us to watch and I was like there's nothing there it was the cover.
- 26:00Nate Vainio: It's horrible the cover just the covers of some of these things are just nasty and the sexuality, the sexualization of the whole industry ingesting that type of media so much it's not unrealistic to think that that person might be struggling with those types of things.
- 26:30Nate Vainio: And that's where I was years ago.
- 26:32Nate Vainio: And I'm at a place I can tell you categorically that I'm at a place now where, yeah, we don't watch TV, I don't watch movies like that, I don't watch TV, I don't watch movies like that.
- 26:44Nate Vainio: I'm probably in that ballpark of five to eight hours a week.
- 26:51Nate Vainio: Yeah, maybe of something, and most of the time it's something I've already watched.
- 26:54Daniel Moore: We watch the news, yeah, Probably usually the 6 o'clock news every week.
- 26:58Daniel Moore: We'll watch that.
- 27:00Nate Vainio: How's your?
- 27:00Daniel Moore: depression.
- 27:01Daniel Moore: It's there.
- 27:05Nate Vainio: I watch it for the weather.
- 27:08Daniel Moore: Yeah, I watch the news for the weather, exactly, I just got to deal with the first 15 minutes to get there you know, but one thing that we've and I've talked about this before in my podcast, when I think I've talked about it even with you whenever we've had life groups in the past with the more college age group, we've dealt with the pornography thing and some of that.
- 27:31Daniel Moore: But that's one of the first things that I always bring up to them is what exactly are you intaking all the time?
- 27:38Daniel Moore: Because that's one way that I whipped it is my Bible studying and listening to sermons online and just anything like that.
- 27:48Daniel Moore: I flipped over to start doing that for my entertainment and it made a world of difference.
- 27:53Daniel Moore: Because once you start ingesting and we're going to get into some of this here in just a second as we wrap this up Once you start ingesting biblical foundations into your life and principles and letting God saturate every little area of your life that needs to be saturated, you will just as it is when you're in your workplace and you become, like you were saying, numb to the words that are spoken around you or the bad things that are taking place around you.
- 28:27Daniel Moore: After that happens quite some time, you know it's not a shock anymore, it just becomes your norm.
- 28:31Daniel Moore: Well, the flip side of that is getting into the Word, listening to some good sermons and just anything to do with God into your life.
- 28:41Daniel Moore: And after a while it's not that hard anymore.
- 28:43Daniel Moore: At the beginning everybody's like oh, this, that hard anymore.
- 28:46Daniel Moore: You know, at the beginning everybody's like, oh, this is so hard, I just I just can't concentrate and keep myself.
- 28:51Daniel Moore: Well, after a while it becomes a norm.
- 28:51Daniel Moore: Yeah, if you will allow yourself to get to that point.
- 28:53Nate Vainio: Well, that's one of the reasons I um, why I look at you know, like what we've gone through with, as you've looked at the podcast um, why I've looked at it from a story standpoint and I'll tell people a lot of times too, when you read, sometimes people will read the scriptures as a theological proof.
- 29:13Nate Vainio: Yeah, and it's not inaccurate, you know.
- 29:18Nate Vainio: I mean, the question is just the question isn't does the text say what it says?
- 29:23Nate Vainio: When it comes to looking at it as a story, it's how are you perceiving this?
- 29:29Nate Vainio: How are you approaching it?
- 29:31Nate Vainio: And the reality is that it is very much a story with characters and there are events and there's plots, and there are good people and bad people, and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between one and the other.
- 29:48Nate Vainio: And if you really got down to the nitty gritty of it, there's a few situations in the scriptures that wouldn't be allowed on Netflix.
- 29:54Nate Vainio: Yeah, definitely, I mean.
- 29:56Nate Vainio: Well, then again, it's full of a bunch of Jews and that might be a problem nowadays.
- 30:02Daniel Moore: It could be, but aside from that, start a protest.
- 30:05Daniel Moore: It could be, but aside from that, start a protest, oh well.
- 30:08Daniel Moore: Well, it's about that time.
- 30:10Daniel Moore: We're going to stop for a moment here and take a break and give you guys a chance to relax for a minute as we kick off the second section of this week's episode and hope you've been enjoying it so far.

- 31:29Daniel Moore: Let's go.
- 31:29Daniel Moore: Welcome back to the episode this week.
- 31:32Daniel Moore: We are quickly winding down our two-week episode here with Nate Vainio from Something to Not on Podcast.
- 31:38Daniel Moore: We've been talking about godliness in the workplace.
- 31:41Daniel Moore: Hope you guys have been enjoying this episode so far.
- 31:59Daniel Moore: God bless you says, and keep that testimony that other people would know that we truly are different.
- 32:05Daniel Moore: So please check out the rest of this week's episode and hopefully you'll enjoy this.
- 32:10Daniel Moore: We're going to get back into this now with Nate Bainio.
- 32:12Daniel Moore: Well, we've been here with Nate Vainio this week.
- 32:16Daniel Moore: He's the host of Something to Knot on podcast and Nate, as we kind of wrap up this week here on this podcast episode that we've been doing, is there anything else that you'd like to add to these stories that we've been sharing with people?
- 32:31Daniel Moore: Maybe to give it a lighter side.
- 32:44Nate Vainio: You know I was.
- 32:44Nate Vainio: Yeah, there's some that whole story with the mine there was.
- 32:46Nate Vainio: It was so good for me.
- 32:46Nate Vainio: There were some tough times and there's some tough individuals involved in that.
- 32:50Nate Vainio: But you know, as I talk about this guy called Dig Dug, there was a point that we were up there and I just this, really just I laugh about it to some extent, but it really kind of shows how a guy like that thinks, I suppose.
- 33:11Nate Vainio: But Dig Dug ended up riding in a truck with a guy who was at one point in time the board member at my dad's church, and he's talking a blue streak, you know.
- 33:20Nate Vainio: And at some point in time he figures out that, you know, this guy is a church-going guy and all of a sudden he starts dialing things back.
- 33:28Nate Vainio: You know, there's that respect issue.
- 33:30Nate Vainio: Oh, this is a Christian guy, you know.
- 33:31Nate Vainio: He starts dialing things back and he asks him he says so, dave, where do you go to church at?
- 33:39Nate Vainio: And he goes, oh, christian Life Center, he's like, and Dig Dug goes that's my church, oh, boy.
- 33:56Nate Vainio: And the humor of it, you know, is you know, there are those people who go to church Easter and Christmas and then there are those who go to church Easter and Christmas sometime in the last 10 years.
- 34:04Nate Vainio: I think that was his case.
- 34:06Nate Vainio: He had been there once for a Christmas event, but by golly that was his church and if he was going to have to go back somewhere, that was going to be it.
- 34:17Nate Vainio: And I tried twisting his arm a few times but I wasn't able to pull that off.
- 34:23Nate Vainio: But it just humored me that if, if he had a dog tag, you know it would have had that particular church's name on it, or what have you?
- 34:31Nate Vainio: You know so, but anyhow that's awesome.
- 34:35Daniel Moore: Yeah, yeah, we all know those people the holiday churchgoers.
- 34:39Daniel Moore: No doubt about it.
- 34:43Daniel Moore: Well, definitely, we've laid a lot of stuff out here in these episodes, and we're going to have a couple of episodes here.
- 34:49Daniel Moore: This should be, of course, the wrapping of the second half of this.
- 34:53Daniel Moore: We don't want to leave it as a cliffhanger, though.
- 34:56Daniel Moore: I know a lot of people out there that are in job situations like this and they may be struggling.
- 35:02Daniel Moore: How do I get out of this?
- 35:04Daniel Moore: What do I need to do to stay strong?
- 35:07Daniel Moore: How do I handle situations as they come up against me?
- 35:11Daniel Moore: As we wrap up this episode here, I think I want of cover a few things, just some little pointers.
- 35:20Daniel Moore: I think that might help people.
- 35:23Daniel Moore: And the first thing that I think is very important is we need to know Christ.
- 35:30Daniel Moore: We need to know exactly who Christ is.
- 35:33Daniel Moore: You know, apart from Christ and having Him in our life, our life really consists of cutting corners and sneaking by and trying to do the bare minimum a lot of times.
- 35:43Daniel Moore: You know, the faith walk requires a lot and if we don't dedicate ourselves to that and make that a priority in our life and dedicate all of our time and efforts to what Christ wants us to do, to be the example even in the workplace, to be sharing that Word, what Christ wants us to do, to be the example even in the workplace, to be sharing that word like he calls us to do and live that out, it's one thing to share with somebody, and a lot of people can see right through this.
- 36:15Daniel Moore: We've seen people that's come up that shares Christ with you, but you can tell they don't really walk it all the time.
- 36:20Daniel Moore: You know, or you see some things in their past that kind of makes you question what they're telling you at that moment.
- 36:26Daniel Moore: Don't be one of those guys.
- 36:29Daniel Moore: Make sure that if you're going to try to be a witness in your workplace and stand up for the values and the morals that you think you should stand up for as a Christian.
- 36:39Daniel Moore: You need to make sure that that is your life.
- 36:42Nate Vainio: Yeah, I think there's a great place here to add one personal pet peeve.
- 36:48Nate Vainio: I think it was Augustine or one of the early church fathers, and if you're on social media, you'll see people post this and it just, it, just it's like fingers on a chalkboard and for those of you who don't know what a chalkboard is, you're not a Generation X-er or boomer or what have you, but you've missed out Anyhow.
- 37:22Nate Vainio: But the statement made that you'll see on people's Facebook posts and attributed, I think, like I said to a guest, I don't know, I obviously don't care, but the statement is something to the effect of preach the gospel and, on occasion, use words and the sentiment and the idea in it is simply that you need to be living it.
- 37:50Nate Vainio: But the unfortunate side of that taking it to that extreme, taking it to that extreme is that it almost devalues the necessity to speak the word.
- 38:11Nate Vainio: And I would say that, rather than that being a lopsided thing, that should be almost co-equal where, yeah, you're living it and you have that knowledge and understanding to be able to communicate with somebody, even on a very simple level of sharing your testimony.
- 38:30Nate Vainio: I mean, you may not be able to sit down and explain, able to sit down and explain sanctification on a doctoral level, you know, to somebody you don't need to, but to be able to sit down with those guys in that truck or in that van and say, listen, this destroyed my life.
- 38:51Nate Vainio: God set me free from this stuff and I don't want to go back.
- 38:53Nate Vainio: That needed to be said.
- 38:56Nate Vainio: Yes, it did.
- 38:56Nate Vainio: And uh, and there are times where I mean, yeah, you're going to have to draw a line and say some things and be divinely empowered and inspired to do so.
- 39:11Nate Vainio: And the beauty of it is God's in the business of doing that, of not only giving you the words to say, business of doing that, yeah, of of not only giving you the words to say, but giving you that divine prompt to do that.
- 39:27Nate Vainio: And uh, so yeah, anyhow, that's my, that's my uh pet peeve.
- 39:31Daniel Moore: Uh, facebook post, yeah of uh yeah, anyhow, christ will never fail us for sure.
- 39:39Daniel Moore: So that's one first step there that you really need to make sure of.
- 39:44Daniel Moore: Secondly we've kind of touched on this is know God's Word.
- 39:46Daniel Moore: You know, in the hands of a surrendered believer it's the clearest and most testable authority that we can reference in moments of a dilemma.
- 39:55Daniel Moore: So if you know the Word and the Word is in you, then you'll have that discernment.
- 40:02Daniel Moore: That discernment will come with that, and those times that come up in your work environment or wherever you may be, not just at work but just in your life in general, just all the places that you're at you will be able to sift the wheat from the tares, so to say.
- 40:18Daniel Moore: You'll be able to tell those moments and those places where you need to speak some of God's Word into that.
- 40:26Nate Vainio: You know, it's interesting that verse in John 8 where Jesus says and so many people quote this wrong.
- 40:35Nate Vainio: I mean, even in the movie Liar Liar with Jim Carrey, and it's funny, don't get me wrong, I mean, even in the movie Liar Liar with Jim Carrey there's a, there's a, and it's funny, I, I don't get me wrong, I, I, I thought it was quite humorous.
- 40:47Nate Vainio: But he, you know, he's in the courtroom and he, he quotes scripture to the ladies like and the truth will set you free, you know, and, and everybody says that you know, the truth will set you free.
- 40:57Nate Vainio: Well, the truth doesn't set you free if you're a convict or, you know, sitting in the courtroom there.
- 41:06Nate Vainio: That's not the scenario that we're looking at here.
- 41:10Nate Vainio: When Jesus makes that statement, it's prefaced by a powerful statement that says if you abide in me and my word abides in you, yeah, the Bible is full of these if-then statements.
- 41:27Nate Vainio: Right, you know, if you do this, if you dwell, if you spend your time devoted, resting, you know in that, if you spend it resting, eating, what is your home?
- 41:52Nate Vainio: Is that your home, your abode?
- 41:54Nate Vainio: Do you abide in your abode?
- 41:55Nate Vainio: I don't even know if those words jive, really, but they anyhow, they sound good.
- 41:59Nate Vainio: Together they sound good.
- 42:00Nate Vainio: But if you do that, then God's word lives in you and out of that, that truth that lives in you will set you free.
- 42:11Daniel Moore: Yes.
- 42:12Nate Vainio: And that's exactly what you're talking about right there.
- 42:14Nate Vainio: Exactly, in a nutshell, john 8, 32.
- 42:16Daniel Moore: Yeah, those two things are so important yeah, they really are are so important?
- 42:19Daniel Moore: Yeah, they really are.
- 42:20Daniel Moore: The third thing is to question the questionable.
- 42:23Daniel Moore: I mean, we're all going to be put into situations sometimes it's just not going to quite feel, right, yeah, and I always say as a rule of thumb, if something doesn't feel like it's quite jiving within your spirit, you need to really pay attention to that, pay attention to your gut, and just make sure that you aren't drawn into something that you don't want to be drawn into, that you would regret later, and that's definitely something to keep an eye on and draw a line where one needs to be drawn.
- 42:54Daniel Moore: You made several connotations there in your story, just several instances where you drew that line and the difference that that made you know.
- 43:06Daniel Moore: A lot of times, I think we get into situations, especially if we're pretty good friends with the people that are around us we're afraid of what they're going to think.
- 43:12Nate Vainio: Yeah.
- 43:13Daniel Moore: And we're afraid that if we draw that line, is it going to hurt our friendship or you know all these scenarios Satan likes to put in our mind when that comes around and you know, at first it may hurt the friendship, At first it may cause some issues, but in the end, more often than not, those things come full circle.
- 43:32Daniel Moore: And, as in your scenario, I love the way that you know some of the parts of your story ended because the fact that you stood in the faith that you had and you drew those lines, you absolutely, I think, made an impact on those men's lives that were around you.
- 43:49Daniel Moore: Yeah, and that speaks volumes.
- 44:24Nate Vainio: I would throw this out here as food for thought for people to dig into, and not necessarily something for us's necessary.
- 44:27Nate Vainio: Yeah, in the sense that, um, uh, you know, do you draw the line at the front door of the bar, or do you draw a line at the right lane of the road that drives by it?
- 44:38Nate Vainio: Or do you draw, do you even drive that direction, or you know?
- 44:42Nate Vainio: Do you know those are?
- 44:44Nate Vainio: I tell you what?
- 44:47Nate Vainio: It's where we're at time-wise.
- 44:49Nate Vainio: Probably just best to leave it like that, but very, maybe there's somebody out there who's hearing this and you need to rethink where you're drawing the boundaries, because your boundaries are too close.
- 45:01Nate Vainio: Have you ever have you been driving down the road and somebody has got their fence built right up to the road and it's like they don't have that that?
- 45:07Daniel Moore: buffer that mark.
- 45:08Daniel Moore: What do they call that Easement?
- 45:09Daniel Moore: Yeah?
- 45:10Nate Vainio: You need to build a little extra in there, so yeah, definitely.
- 45:17Daniel Moore: It's real easy to let ourselves go too far and then it's really hard to reel yourself back if you're not careful.
- 45:24Daniel Moore: And it's better to be proactive in that situation.
- 45:27Daniel Moore: And we all know as Christians, we know where that line needs to be drawn.
- 45:32Daniel Moore: And a lot of times, if you really think about the scenarios that we get ourselves into more often than not, we had plenty of time to address that way back then before we let ourselves get that far into it.
- 45:44Daniel Moore: But, for whatever reason, we let ourselves go a little bit too far a lot of the times and it becomes an issue.
- 45:50Daniel Moore: We just need to remember that as Christians we should be serving and not just surviving.
- 45:55Daniel Moore: And it seems like a lot of Christians today just as I was talking in the very beginning, with us being in the negative era of the world, at this point in time, where the skeptics have the voice and the people that are skeptics of Christianity and the Word, it kind of puts a lot of Christians in my opinion, a lot of Christians today are just in survival mode.
- 46:19Daniel Moore: They're silent, they don't want to speak out.
- 46:22Daniel Moore: It's like there's a fear that's there and things have really shifted and that's not what God's called us.
- 46:29Daniel Moore: God's called us to be a servant, and he's called us to take back what the enemy's taken from us, to take back that land that he has tried to steal.
- 46:38Daniel Moore: And we can't do that if we're just in survival mode, and so we need to make sure that we're being a servant leader.
- 46:45Daniel Moore: Matthew 5.13 talks about the salt of the earth and how, if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
- 46:53Daniel Moore: It's no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and put in the dumpster.
- 46:58Daniel Moore: When we become the salt and the light, we make a change.
- 47:02Daniel Moore: There's a new flavor that we add to things as Christians, and unfruitfulness in the workplace can be in the form of a negative office culture, backbiting, you know, just plain old struggles that we have.
- 47:16Daniel Moore: But through any of that stuff that we go through, we need to be salt and light and be the difference that would shine God's light in those situations.
- 47:26Daniel Moore: And finally, we're called to persevere.
- 47:29Daniel Moore: The thing that distinguishes the followers of Jesus Christ is that we actually follow through to the end.
- 47:35Daniel Moore: We don't give up, we don't stop, we keep fighting, we keep praying on our knees, we keep reading our word and we keep doing things that we have to do to make sure that we win that battle in the end, and so I just I pray that anybody that's out there listening to this that maybe you're struggling with some of this stuff you know, nate and I have kind of gotten past a lot of those battles at this point that you guys are probably going through right now.
- 48:00Daniel Moore: Some of you may just now be starting to taste some of this at your workplace or wherever it may be, and you may feel like you're on an island all alone, but you're not.
- 48:08Daniel Moore: There's other people out there that's going through this or has already been there and done that, and you know the best thing is is to keep God first and to make sure that, uh, that we do win in the end.
- 48:21Daniel Moore: We can't let Satan win that battle.
- 48:23Daniel Moore: Is there anything final that you'd like to add, nate, as we close this up?
- 48:30Daniel Moore: Just get into the word just get into it and let it get into you, let it get into you, let it get into you?
- 48:37Nate Vainio: yeah, just you know, sometimes we can.
- 48:41Nate Vainio: Sometimes you just got to get on the bike, yeah, you got to get out.
- 48:48Nate Vainio: Get on the horse, use whatever metaphor you know at some point in time Brilliant conversation, brilliant arguments and whatever conversation and brilliant arguments and whatever you know, just you.
- 49:05Nate Vainio: And social media is great for it.
- 49:06Nate Vainio: They're great for memes, they're great for little scriptures here and there, and I post them.
- 49:08Nate Vainio: But, man, I tell you what?
- 49:09Nate Vainio: Grab your Bible and get into it, yeah, and just pray.
- 49:15Nate Vainio: Lord, lead me where you want to speak to me.
- 49:19Nate Vainio: Yeah, that's the best thing to do, and the beautiful thing is, when you pray, that God answers, that he does he does, and you're never alone.
- 49:31Daniel Moore: Got to remember that he's always there, right by our side, through all of it, and so we just need to make sure that we stand strong and stand firm.
- 49:39Daniel Moore: Well, nate, appreciate you being here with me again, and this has been fun.
- 49:45Nate Vainio: Yeah, I really enjoyed it.
- 49:46Nate Vainio: Thanks for the opportunity.
- 49:47Nate Vainio: I sure do appreciate it.
- 49:49Daniel Moore: I've enjoyed having you on these episodes and we'll, of course, later on in the future I'm sure we'll do it again sometime, so, uh, so check out Nate's podcast.
- 50:01Daniel Moore: It's something to gnaw on.
- 50:01Daniel Moore: He's got some awesome Bible study going on right now.
- 50:03Daniel Moore: If you've ever been curious about Isaiah I know a lot of people usually are that's one of those books that a lot of people have a hard time understanding, so he's tearing that one apart right now.
- 50:13Daniel Moore: So go check that out, and, of course, all of his previous episodes as well, and I know that he'd appreciate that.
- 50:20Daniel Moore: And make sure you subscribe and share.
- 50:22Daniel Moore: That's always important.
- 50:23Daniel Moore: So well, I'm going to call this a wrap, then, and Nate appreciate you coming in and we'll catch you next time.
- 50:28Daniel Moore: Sounds good, god bless.
- 50:30Daniel Moore: Well, that's going to wrap up this week's episode of Connecting the Gap and that wraps up the final section of our discussion here with Nate Vainio on godliness in the workplace.
- 50:43Daniel Moore: Hope you guys enjoyed last week and this week and took something from it, and if there's anything that you'd like for us to pray with you about, please reach out danielatconnectingthegapnet, or we have a form on our website that you can fill out and send that as well.
- 50:56Daniel Moore: You can also message us through Facebook, just however.
- 50:58Daniel Moore: You would like to do that, please do so.
- 51:02Daniel Moore: I know that this is a battle that a lot of people have to deal with each and every day.
- 51:05Daniel Moore: I've been in that situation, as we've discussed here in these episodes, and Nate's had to deal with that as well.
- 51:11Daniel Moore: It's just a common thing that we have to face in this world, because Satan, whenever we try to change our life and we try to do God's will and go on that path that he sets before us, that just is like fingernails on a chalkboard, like we talked about at one point here in this episode.
- 51:29Daniel Moore: To Satan's ears, he hates the fact that we follow Christ and that we want to follow God over what Satan wants us to do.
- 51:38Daniel Moore: But you know what Christ and that we want to follow God over what Satan wants us to do.
- 51:42Daniel Moore: But you know what we can't overcome.
- 51:43Daniel Moore: And all we have to do is just keep our eyes focused on heaven, that reward that we're going to get someday for being faithful and being faithful stewards in what God has given us, even in our workplace.
- 51:53Daniel Moore: And it is difficult.
- 51:55Daniel Moore: I'm not saying that it's not.
- 51:56Daniel Moore: It's never an easy road when Satan comes up against us, but it's not.
- 51:59Daniel Moore: It's never an easy road when Satan comes up against us, but it's not impossible.
