- 0:26Speaker 1: Brees we'll be enshrining to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We've heard from a lot of people, former players, teammates, coaches,
- 0:33Speaker 1: people who know Drew well. Someone may be quite literally
- 0:37Speaker 1: who better than anyone off the field, k new Drew
- 0:39Speaker 1: Brees during his time in New Orleans. Bow Lowry, who
- 0:41Speaker 1: is the director of sports Medicine for the New Orleans Saints,
- 0:44Speaker 1: had a nine year running there from twenty twelve to
- 0:45Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. He came to LSU and then or
- 0:48Speaker 1: back to LSU, I should say, and then Sean Payton
- 0:50Speaker 1: scooped him up and brought him to Denver. You can
- 0:53Speaker 1: hardly blame him though he's the VP of player health
- 0:55Speaker 1: and performance right now for the Broncos and Bo Lowry's
- 0:57Speaker 1: good enough to join us for a couple minutes. Yo, man,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it's great to hear he are you?
- 1:00Speaker 2: How are you good man? Thank you for having me.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Uh, It's our pleasure, especially considering the occasion. If I
- 1:07Speaker 1: were to ask, like, how many hours over nine years
- 1:12Speaker 1: did you spend with Drew Breesh.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Estimated during the season, we wound up spending more time
- 1:20Speaker 2: together probably than we did with our families, so a lot.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I just want to put some context on it
- 1:26Speaker 1: for people. If I were to ask, after spending that
- 1:31Speaker 1: much time with Drew, what you would say is maybe
- 1:37Speaker 1: the most consistent trait for Drew Brees as an NFL
- 1:40Speaker 1: quarterback or an NFL player, What would you say?
- 1:45Speaker 2: I would say his attention to detail, his work, ethic,
- 1:49Speaker 2: who he was, and probably just just a leader. You know,
- 1:55Speaker 2: you've heard all of the things said about Drew with
- 1:58Speaker 2: the one thing that was sort of you know, unchanging,
- 2:02Speaker 2: was he was the first in the building, he was
- 2:04Speaker 2: the last to leave. And when you talk about a leader,
- 2:08Speaker 2: like I feel like I got a PhD in leadership
- 2:12Speaker 2: training by just being around it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Give me an example, but like, what's a something that
- 2:18Speaker 1: you saw him do with teammates or in the training
- 2:20Speaker 1: room or whatever.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You know, it's just sort of who he was. You know.
- 2:27Speaker 2: He cared so much about the team, and he cares
- 2:30Speaker 2: so much about the organization, and he carried that weight
- 2:35Speaker 2: really really well. When I tell you, there would be
- 2:39Speaker 2: times in the off season that I was usually one
- 2:42Speaker 2: of the first ones then to get there at about
- 2:44Speaker 2: five point thirty. And we're talking in March and April,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and so my track was walking down the hallway and
- 2:52Speaker 2: the quarterback set up in the tight ends room and man,
- 2:57Speaker 2: Drew's in there watching them, and I'm like, what are
- 3:00Speaker 2: you doing. He's like, well, I'm just sort of getting
- 3:02Speaker 2: ready for the off season. Mine Drew the off seasons
- 3:05Speaker 2: in a month. He's like, there's some stuff we need
- 3:09Speaker 2: to get done, got to get better. So that's one example.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Like he made the janitor in the building better, right
- 3:19Speaker 2: when I talked about literally everybody when they talked to Drew,
- 3:24Speaker 2: he made them feel like they were the most important person.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So from a leadership perspective, when you're pulling the best
- 3:32Speaker 2: out of everybody, I don't care if it was those
- 3:35Speaker 2: of us in the training room, the weight room, position coaches,
- 3:39Speaker 2: the defense, and we hadn't even talked about the other players, right, Like,
- 3:46Speaker 2: He's spent a ton of time with his players, and
- 3:50Speaker 2: he just wanted to know that they're going to cross
- 3:53Speaker 2: every key, died every I tom make sure that no
- 3:57Speaker 2: stone was left in turn in preparation for whoever the
- 4:00Speaker 2: opponent was. So yeah, I can you can't really say
- 4:05Speaker 2: enough good stuff. And you know, people who don't know
- 4:08Speaker 2: him go, yeah, he can't be that good, and you go,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm shoot, I'm five or five years of moves, six
- 4:15Speaker 2: years or moved from from that, and then it's just
- 4:20Speaker 2: like what he did is even more unrealistic than even
- 4:25Speaker 2: when we were with him, because it was it was
- 4:28Speaker 2: just sort of awing to be around him. It really was.
- 4:32Speaker 1: What about I would imagine that the component you got
- 4:35Speaker 1: to see the most too, is how he took care
- 4:37Speaker 1: of his body, because you don't ge to play in
- 4:38Speaker 1: your forties at that level if you're not exceptional at
- 4:42Speaker 1: Karen for yourself. Uh, what was that like? Working with
- 4:45Speaker 1: Drew on on on it on his body?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Like with everything Drew did, he was very very focused
- 4:55Speaker 2: and he was very regiment right, So like honestly for
- 5:00Speaker 2: nine years and it evolved. But like what we did
- 5:04Speaker 2: on Monday, from a recovery standpoint, what we did on Tuesdays,
- 5:09Speaker 2: like it was unchanging. Like I'm telling you, at four
- 5:13Speaker 2: o'clock on Monday afternoon, we're in the back doctor's office,
- 5:17Speaker 2: doors shut and it's our dry knealing session. From a
- 5:20Speaker 2: recovery standpoint. On Tuesdays, he's doing his quarterback recovery early
- 5:26Speaker 2: in the morning, watching film. She was off day. He
- 5:30Speaker 2: was spending eight hours at the facility getting ready far
- 5:34Speaker 2: as a week. And on Wednesday, post practice, like when
- 5:39Speaker 2: I tell you, regimented, like we had our art session
- 5:43Speaker 2: that was set up that he was going to do.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Thursday he was going to do his ban routine. Like
- 5:49Speaker 2: Friday was recovery Friday. So yeah, literally Saturday he stayed
- 5:56Speaker 2: at the facility longer than everybody. And I'm sure people
- 5:58Speaker 2: have seen, like Reggie Bush came and one of drew
- 6:03Speaker 2: last year's and the thing that Reggie said Drew would
- 6:06Speaker 2: do on Saturdays was after we would go through all
- 6:09Speaker 2: of our walk through, whether we're traveling or playing his home,
- 6:14Speaker 2: he would take the script he was just to make
- 6:17Speaker 2: sure he's prepared for everything, and he would buy himself
- 6:21Speaker 2: walk through the game plan situations and in his head
- 6:27Speaker 2: and get called the plays out. Like then he would
- 6:31Speaker 2: come back and then he would jump on the Norman
- 6:34Speaker 2: text and do some recovery stuff before he went home
- 6:37Speaker 2: and spent through four hours prior to going to the hotel.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So like he was so regimenes. You know where he was.
- 6:46Speaker 2: You know, just based on what it's Friday at five o'clock,
- 6:50Speaker 2: we know where it. Drew is.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Bo Lowry was the director of sports medicine for the
- 6:55Speaker 1: Saints for nine years, got to know Drew Brees exceptionally. Well.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You know, we've also learned this lore of Drew plane
- 7:00Speaker 1: through injuries, Like we've learned about the knee and the
- 7:02Speaker 1: oblique and different things. Did he ever do anything physically Bo,
- 7:05Speaker 1: that I mean obviously at the time nobody wanted information out. Now,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I mean it's it's what it is. You can tell
- 7:10Speaker 1: these stories, but that that really even surprised you to
- 7:13Speaker 1: know like he was able to play and perform with that.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Well, you know, Drew, Drew's so tough. You know. The
- 7:24Speaker 2: one thing I do remember it was one of his
- 7:27Speaker 2: last years. We were flying to Tennessee and all of
- 7:30Speaker 2: a sudden, his knees really swollen and he all of
- 7:34Speaker 2: a sudden had this acute verse sighted and I look
- 7:38Speaker 2: and I'm like, I'm concerned, and he's like, hey, let's
- 7:42Speaker 2: do some treatment on it. You know. He uh my
- 7:45Speaker 2: nickname for him was Bodacious, and he's like, Bodacious, don't worry,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it's gonna be fine. We show up, like did we
- 7:52Speaker 2: jump off the plane in Tennessee, and we go through
- 7:57Speaker 2: walk through and stuff. He didn't feel great. Spen a
- 8:01Speaker 2: bunch of time that night doing the treatment stuff. And
- 8:04Speaker 2: then during the game, I mean like he literally lit
- 8:08Speaker 2: the Titans up and I'm over here worrying and he's like, man,
- 8:12Speaker 2: don't don't worry about small stuff like this. I'm like
- 8:15Speaker 2: a flowing me like I worried about. But that's just
- 8:19Speaker 2: who he was. He's like he he put everybody else
- 8:23Speaker 2: at ease. And so, yeah, Drew played with a lot people.
- 8:27Speaker 2: People don't realize, you know, he had the boy that
- 8:30Speaker 2: was what hisfteen or sixteen. There was another game like
- 8:35Speaker 2: we had finished and he had a planar fascion issue,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and you know, we we our docs looked at him.
- 8:42Speaker 2: We called doctor Anderson at the time, and doctor Anderson's like, look,
- 8:47Speaker 2: he's most people just won't play with it. It's not
- 8:50Speaker 2: a hurting and he can play with it if he wants,
- 8:52Speaker 2: but you know, I would think pain would be a
- 8:55Speaker 2: limiting factor. And uh, Drew, so this isn't going to
- 9:01Speaker 2: hurt me long term. I can play and he's like, well,
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'll play it like and there again went out and
- 9:07Speaker 2: just completely balled out and things like that. Was I
- 9:14Speaker 2: was amazed at how well he played with with a
- 9:17Speaker 2: lot of these things. And yeah, people never knew, they
- 9:20Speaker 2: never knew.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Twenty nineteen Saints of Titans breeze twenty seven of thirty
- 9:25Speaker 1: eight for two seventy nine, three touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yep, yep, that's true.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Not that, And what's it going to be like for
- 9:34Speaker 1: you Saturday and in camp?
- 9:39Speaker 2: And honestly, I'm just so privileged to be able to
- 9:43Speaker 2: be there, Honestly, like Drew meant so much to so many,
- 9:47Speaker 2: So yeah, just being able to watch this and like
- 9:53Speaker 2: he deserves it, I never will forget. So the no
- 9:57Speaker 2: call happens right in twenty nine team and we go
- 10:01Speaker 2: to the locker room, like all these dudes are crying,
- 10:06Speaker 2: just hurt and and I never will forget. True's speech
- 10:11Speaker 2: was like, look, man, guy's got a plan. Don't know
- 10:14Speaker 2: why this happened. It sucks, it's terrible, but guess what,
- 10:18Speaker 2: we're gonna be better for it. We're going to be
- 10:20Speaker 2: better in the long run for it. So just thinking
- 10:23Speaker 2: of him by specialty fight this due is so special.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Sean Payton will will present Drew Brees on Saturday in Canton, Ohio,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and the greatest player in Saint's history, and maybe I
- 10:36Speaker 1: would argue the most influential athlete in the history of
- 10:39Speaker 1: the state of Louisiana. Drew Brees will take his rightful
- 10:42Speaker 1: place in cand Ohio. Bo Lowry will be there. Hey, man,
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's great to hear your voice. I know in the
- 10:46Speaker 1: middle of training camp. It's not the easiest thing to
- 10:48Speaker 1: do to jump on a phone call and do this interview,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but we sincerely appreciate man. Hope we cross path soon.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, thanks, Matt, appreciate it.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Thanks bos Bo Lowry great dude and is just phenomenal
- 11:01Speaker 1: at what he does. Like Bo, when you talk about
- 11:02Speaker 1: like the best in the industry of what they do
- 11:03Speaker 1: that a lot of people don't know, like the sort
- 11:05Speaker 1: of nameless, faceless job that people will know about behind
- 11:08Speaker 1: the scenes. That's Bo lower I mean, there's a reason
- 11:10Speaker 1: he spent nine years with the Saints. He was commuting
- 11:12Speaker 1: from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. Took a job at
- 11:15Speaker 1: LSU to replace Jack Marucci, and then after what eighteen
- 11:18Speaker 1: months maybe at LSU, Sean Payton took the Denver job.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I was like, BO, come on, and so he moved
- 11:25Speaker 1: to Denver. So uh, BUTO, Bo is phenomenal and how
- 11:30Speaker 1: you could hear it? I mean as regiment as Drew
- 11:32Speaker 1: Brees was every day he was with Bo Lowry getting
- 11:35Speaker 1: his body right. So Bo's got a great perspective. We
- 11:37Speaker 1: appreciate that. We appreciate the time
